Case Report has presented health effects of high level of irradiation with gamma rays from {sup 192}Ir on the patient M. L. during 21 years after an incident. The main purpose was to investigate long time consequences of partial high level irradiation on human health. Locally, short-term irradiation with high, deadly dose, caused acute radiation syndrome with reversible disorder of function of the individual, most exposed, organs. Frequency of chromosomal aberrations (dicentric), characteristic for direct irradiation, was increased. However, dicentric analyzes did not give expected result for an acute radioactivity illness. Radio-dermatitis had begun already after the incident, while changes on the heart began gradually, not earlier than six months, up to two years after the incident. Irradiated parts of the patient skin have been changed with auto-transplanted skin and appropriate therapy had been taken. More than two decades after the irradiation, system (leukemia) nor solitary tumor on near organs (liver, heart, lungs, bones) did not happened. Radiation illness did not happened in spite of very large dose, because impacts were local and body was uneven irradiated. Also, an appropriate therapy was organized and potential illness did not happen. (authors)

The authors share 12 practical tips on creating effective titles and abstracts for a journal publication or conference presentation. When crafting a title authors should: (1) start thinking of the title from the start; (2) brainstorm many key words, create permutations, and ask others for input; (3) strive for an informative and indicative title; (4) start the title with the most important words; and (5) wait to finalize the title until the very end. When writing the abstract, authors should: (6) wait until the end to write the abstract; (7) copy and paste from main text as the starting point; (8) start with a detailed structured format; (9) describe what they did; (10) describe what they found; (11) highlight what readers can do with this information; and (12) ensure that the abstract aligns with the full text and conforms to submission guidelines.

--Based on of Marx's Economic Philosophy Manuscripts of 1844 HE Jian-jin (Philosophy Department, Fujian Provincial Committee Party School, Fuzhou, Fujian 350012, China) Abstract: Socialism with Chinese characteristics has a close relationship with the return and growth of capital in China. To implement the scientific concept of development, we must confront the problem of scientifically controlling the capital. In Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844, Marx criticized the three old philosophical thinking of treating capital: Object-oriented thinking, intuitive thinking, purely spiritual abstract thinking, and he established his own unique understanding of the capital that is to understand the capital from the human perceptual activities and practical activities. Contemporary Chinese society exist the problem of underdevelopment and abnormal development, and the three heterogeneity problems of pre-modern, modern, postmodern concurrent. In order to implement the scientific concept of development, we must reject any abstract positive or negative to modern basic principles under the guidance of the capital, against the eternal capital theory and capital theory of evil, and we must oppose the thinking that the capital is eternal or evil. Key words: socialism with Chinese characteristics; capital; national economics; scientific concept of development

Judicature, Public Opinion, and Politics at An Age of Disordered Legal World View :A Study Centered on the Case of Li Changkui The Case of L/Changkui represents a kind of simple "hard case", in which whatever the judge made a de- cision, result of the case failed to gain good social and legal effects, and the causation, however, rested on the internal system of judicature. The Case of Li reflects an age at which legal world view is deficient in coherence and integration. Although it's not an exclusive problem for China that judicature, public opinion and politics in- teract complicatedly, and the society shows distustt upon the criminal justice system, it reveals that, in the case of Li, some judicial personnel and academics hold an uni-dimensional and prejudiced understanding on the credi- bility, legitimacy and stability of judicature.

Spiritual Construction and Its Ideological Sources in Contemporary China The spiritual construction in contemporary China is an important ideological task proposed by the historical practice of China. Modernized development often entails the meaning of entering into " modern civilization. " Nevertheless, an abstract understanding of this civilization has covered up its essential stipulation and historical nature. China has pursued its development on a different historical prerequisite from the west, and therefore, only partially belongs to modern capitalist modernization. The practical prospects of Chinese development imply a transformation and remodeling of the general lifestyle, life attitudes and values, which inevitably calls for a new form of philosophy. The ideological sources for this new philosophy are: Chinese philosophy, Western integration of them may point to philosophy and Marxist philosophy. On Rousseau's Equality and Freedom GONG Qun Abstract:Equality and freedom are the two core concepts of political philosophy and Rousseau~s political philosophy is no exception. Freedom and equality in Rousseau in- cludes two levels: natural state and social state under social contract, and among them, there is one state of un-equality. The relationship between the two concepts here is that equality is a necessary precondition of freedom, and that there is no equality, there is no freedom. The achievement of Rousseau~s equality is by one contractual behavior that all the members transfer their rights, especially property rights, and form of the Community. Freedom in Rousseau's mind is through the people's sovereignty in the Community to achieve freedom.

The Shift of World Center and the Change of the International System Yan Xuetong Abstract: The power transition caused by China' s rise will not only change the international configuration, but could also result in the world cen- ter shifting from Europe to Asia. However, neither a change in the interna- tional configuration nor the shift of the world center implies a change of the type of the international system. The international system is composed of three elements: international actors, international configuration and interna- tional norms. It will be neither possible to distinguish international system from its components nor clarify relations between components and system if changes in one element are treated as change of types of international system.

The Western Characteristics of the Pardims of International Studies in America:With the Huaxla System as a Counterexample Ye Zicheng (4)[ Abstract ] Three flaws are obvious in the three paradigms of International Studies in America. Specifically, their arguments are based on the assumption that the world is anarchic ; they go too far in employing the scientific and rational methodology; they pay little attention to the humans. Hence, the three paradigms of international studies in America aren' t necessarily useful for the explanation of China' s history and culture as well as its relations with the outside world. The Huaxia system, for example, is anarchic but also apparently hierarchical; the approach of pursuing security in understanding the rise of western powers may be meaningless, for the hegemony in the Huaxia System needn't worry about its security; the theory of power-balancing seemingly couldn' t explain why Qin ended up in defeating the alliance of the other six states in the Warring-states period. The Huaxia system is quite open, and has free movement of people, goods, and ideas. Some interstate regimes and institutions were formed through Huimeng (alliance-making) among states. However, this kind of limited and fragile interdependence and cooperation soon came to an end after the hegemonies of Qi, Jin and Wei. There does exit the identity problem among states in the Huaxia System, but this problem doesn't play such a great role as the constructivists expect it would.

Strategic Realism: An Option for China' s Grand Strategy Song Dexing (4) [ Abstract] As a non-Western emerging power, China should positively adapt its grand strategy to the strategic psychological traits in the 21st century, maintain a realist tone consistent with the national conditions of China, and avoid adventurist policies while awaring both strategic strength and weakness. In the 21st century, China' s grand strategy should be based on such core values as security, development, peace and justice, especially focusing on development in particular, which we named "strategic realism". Given the profound changes in China and the world, strategic realism encourages active foreign policy to safe- guard the long-term national interests of China. Following the self-help logic and the fun- damental values of security and prosperity, strategic realism concerns national interests as its top-priority. It advocates smart use of power, and aims to achieve its objectives by optimizing both domestic and international conditions. From the perspective of diplomatic phi- losophy, strategic realism is not a summarization of concrete policies but a description of China' s grand strategy orientations in the new century. [Abstract] The essay analyzed the action logic of hegemon with a power approach. Hegemony can be classified as benign or malignant. A benign hegemon should be pro- ductive, inclusive and maintain procedure justice when it uses its power. The power of hegemon can be categorized into two types: the hard power, which is the use of coer- cion and payment and can be measured by public products, and the soft power, which shows the ability to attract and co-opt and can be measured by the relationship-specific investments. The relationship between the input of public products and the relationship -specific investments is not positively correlative. Confusing with the public products and the soft power might lead to strategic misleading. A country rich in power re- sources should comply with the following principles if it wanted to improve its hard power and soft power: first, analyze the scope of the existing hegemon's soft power and avoid investing public products in the scope; second, maintain honesty in a long term and continue to increase others' benefits following the rule of neutral Pareto im- provement; third, provide both public goods and public bads; fourth, be more patient to obtain soft power. DESIGN OF ANTI-LIGHTENING AND GROUNDING SYSTEM FOR COMPRESSOR SHELTER AND LARGE WAREHOUSE IN REFINERY AND PETROCHEMICAL PLANT[1] Wang Zongjing (SINOPEC Engineering Incorporation, Beijing, 100101) Abstract:With the rapid development of national economy, petrochemical industry plays a more and more important role in national economy. Since most of the process medium in various units in refineries and petrochemical plants are flammable and explosive hazardous substances, high requirements are imposed on the reliability, continuity and stability of each link and facility in the production. Most of the compressor shelters and large warehouses, which are the core buildings in refin- ery and petrochemical plant, are closed or semi-open, so that the atmospheric diffusion of explosive gas mixture is restrained and explosion hazard concentration is kept within a certain period of time. In case of ignition, the enormous explosion pressure will result in damage to equipment and buildings. Therefore, the anti-lightening design of compressor shelter and large warehouse is especially important for the anti-lightening security of refineries and petrochemical plants.

We describe a case of reflex seizures induced by abstract reasoning but not other cognitive processes. The patient, a 46-year-old man, experienced myoclonic seizures whenever he played shogi (Japanese chess). To identify the critical thought processes responsible for inducing his seizures, we monitored his clinical seizures and epileptiform discharges while he performed comprehensive neuropsychological tests, including the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R), spatial working memory, mental rotation, and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) tasks. A myoclonic seizure occurred only during the WCST. Generalized 3- to 5-Hz spike-and-slow-wave bursts occurred repeatedly during the Block Design subtest of the WAIS-R and the WCST, whereas no discharges occurred during other subtests of the WAIS-R including the calculation, spatial working memory, and mental rotation tasks. These results indicate that abstract reasoning, independent of other cognitive processes, could induce the patient's epileptiform discharges, suggesting that his reflex seizures might be a distinct subtype of nonverbal thinking-induced seizures.

Full Text Available Algebra typically represents the students’ first encounter with abstract mathematical reasoning and it therefore causes significant difficulties for students who still reason concretely. The aim of the present study was to investigate the developmental trajectory of the students’ ability to solve simple algebraic equations. 311 participants between the ages of 12 and 17 were given a computerized test of equation rearrangement. Equations consisted of an unknown and two other elements (numbers or letters, and the operations of multiplication/division. The obtained results showed that younger participants are less accurate and slower in solving equations with letters (symbols than those with numbers. This difference disappeared for older participants (16-17 years, suggesting that they had reached an abstract reasoning level, at least for this simple task. A corresponding conclusion arises from the analysis of their strategies which suggests that younger participants mostly used concrete strategies such as inserting numbers, while older participants typically used more abstract, rule-based strategies. These results indicate that the development of algebraic thinking is a process which unfolds over a long period of time. In agreement with previous research, we can conclude that, on average, children at the age of 15-16 transition from using concrete to abstract strategies while solving the algebra problems addressed within the present study. A better understanding of the timing and speed of students’ transition from concrete arithmetic reasoning to abstract algebraic reasoning might help in designing better curricula and teaching materials that would ease that transition.

For this purpose, a qualitative method (descriptive analytical was used. Necessary data and information were collected by using the library and field research methods. The main purpose of this research is explanation of incident in abstract expressionism works, especially the Jackson Pollock's works. The major findings and results that were obtained show that Pollack's works are not accidentally and they are results of several years of works. Painter has been practiced to remove the topic form his works and after the action paintings are popular. He used his inner conscience in his works, and according to his own conclusion whenever he loses this connection with his inner conscience, his work would be destroyed. In the abstract expressionism works, the unconscious movement of hands and uncontrolled transferring of the paint can be seen on the canvas. In addition, his works are full of instinctive and emotional behavior. Actually, the action of painting would be priority in abstract expressionism works. It is a style, which is coming from his artist experience.

  6. The Water Abstraction License Regime in Italy: A Case for Reform?

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    2016-03-01

Full Text Available The current Water Abstraction License (WAL regime in Italy is no longer flexible enough to cope with the challenges posed by human-induced climate and global environmental changes. The cornerstones of the current regime were laid down in the 1930s and have remained essentially unchanged ever since. The sole noteworthy reform of the Italian WAL regime was the decentralization of the regulatory competences from the state to the regional authorities in the late 1990s. In this paper, we review the WAL regimes across the administrative regions comprising the Po River Basin District (PRBD, the largest and economically most important in Italy. PRBD’s WAL regime includes a rigid and scattered WAL normative that hinders the performance of bottom-up conflict resolution mechanisms at a basin scale; a water pricing scheme that does not reflect the cost of water conveyance and use, and does not encourage efficient water allocation; and the lack of a central WAL register, which delays and in some cases impedes an environmental impact assessment for issuing new licenses or renewing existing ones, and does not allow prioritizing applications according to their full economic value. We argue these deficiencies may compromise both the integrity of riverine and water dependent ecosystems and the economic uses of water. This paper offers insights that can inform reform of water allocations in the PRBD and elsewhere in Italy and in Europe.

The Three - Stage Interaction Model of Lexicon - Syntax Interface Liu Yuhong (80) The Three -Stage Interaction Model maintains that the interactions at the lexicon -syntax interface are divisible into three levels, namely, the interaction between lexical meaning and lexical grammar that determines syntactic items, the interaction among lexical items that determines syntactic structure, and the interaction between abstract syntactic structure (i. e. construction) and temporary syntactic combinations that determines and coerces grammaticality of the latter. The Three - Stage Interaction Model is hierarchical, complete and bidirectional in language comprehension. It also testifies to the varying abstractness between grammar (syntax) and semantics, and between the five grammatical cases. According to this model, temporary syntactic combination is sanctioned by abstract syntactic structure, therefore the conventional linguistic significance of P600 is maintained without coining contradictory new terms.

    2016-12-01

Full Text Available The current research aims at studying the epidemic model of the term RFID within the classes of patents. Methodology: The research is descriptive and has been conducted based on the mathematical models of diseases. Research population consists of 35,627 granted patents from the USPTO database those which the terms RFID or Radio Frequency Identification occur in their titles or abstracts. Data analysis was performed through software like Excel, SPSS, and Ravar-Matrix. Findings show that the cumulative growth of sub-classes with the term RFID follows an S-logistic model. This is an evidence of natural growth rate for assigning the term RFID to the USPTO sub-classes over the years.  Other finding reveals that the term RFID has been entered into and exited from the sub-classes of patents like the SIS epidemic model of diseases. As a final conclusion, the most technical fields those that are susceptible for RFID technology, have been met this technology. On the base of SIS model, the epidemic of RFID technology has been reached a balance.

  16. Effects of climate change on water abstraction restrictions for irrigation during droughts - The UK case

    Science.gov (United States)

    Rey Vicario, D.; Holman, I.

    2016-12-01

The use of water for irrigation and on-farm reservoir filling is globally important for agricultural production. In humid climates, like the UK, supplemental irrigation can be critical to buffer the effects of rainfall variability and to achieve high quality crops. Given regulatory efforts to secure sufficient environmental river flows and meet rising water demands due to population growth and climate change, increasing water scarcity is likely to compound the drought challenges faced by irrigated agriculture in this region. Currently, water abstraction from surface waters for agricultural irrigation can be restricted by the Environment Agency during droughts under Section 57 of the Water Resources Act (1991), based on abnormally low river flow levels and rainfall forecast, causing significant economic impacts on irrigated agricultural production. The aim of this study is to assess the impact that climate change may have on agricultural abstraction in the UK within the context of the abstraction restriction triggers currently in place. These triggers have been applied to the `Future Flows hydrology' database to assess the likelihood of increasing restrictions on agricultural abstraction in the future by comparing the probability of voluntary and compulsory restrictions in the baseline (1961-1990) and future period (2071-2098) for 282 catchments throughout the whole of the UK. The results of this study show a general increase in the probability of future agricultural irrigation abstraction restrictions in the UK in the summer, particularly in the South West, although there is significant variability between the 11 ensemble members. The results also indicate that UK winters are likely to become wetter in the future, although in some catchments the probability of abstraction restriction in the reservoir refilling winter months (November-February) could increase slightly. An increasing frequency of drought events due to climate change is therefore likely to lead to

Quantitative models are increasingly used in systems biology. Usually, these quantitative models involve many molecular species and their associated reactions. When simulating a tissue with thousands of cells, using these large models becomes computationally and time limiting. In this paper, we propose to construct abstractions using information theory notions. Entropy is used to discretize the state space and mutual information is used to select a subset of all original variables and their mutual dependencies. We apply our method to an hybrid model of TRAIL-induced apoptosis in HeLa cell. Our abstraction, represented as a Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN), reduces the number of variables from 92 to 10, and accelerates numerical simulation by an order of magnitude, yet preserving essential features of cell death time distributions. This approach is implemented in the tool DBNizer, freely available at http://perso.crans.org/genest/DBNizer . gregory.batt@inria.fr or bgenest@irisa.fr. 2. Embodiment of abstract categories in space… grounding or mere compatibility effects? The case of politics.

    2016-05-01

In two experiments, the role played by stimulus response compatibility in driving the spatial grounding of abstract concepts is examined. In Experiment 1, participants were asked to classify politics-related words appearing to the left or the right side of a computer monitor as socialist or conservative. Responses were given by pressing vertically aligned keys and thus orthogonal to the spatial information that may have been implied by the words. Responses given by left or right index finger were counterbalanced. In Experiment 2, a lexical decision task, participants categorized political words or non-words presented to the left or the right auditory channels, by pressing the top/bottom button of a response box. The response category labels (word or non-word) were also orthogonal to the spatial information that may have been implied by the stimulus words. In both experiments, responses were faster when socialism-related words were presented on the left and conservatism-related words were presented on the right, irrespective of the reference of the response keys or labels. Overall, our findings suggest that the spatial grounding of abstract concepts (or at least politics-related ones) is independent of experimentally driven stimulus-response compatibility effects.

  4. Stable groundwater quality in deep aquifers of Southern Bangladesh: the case against sustainable abstraction.

    Science.gov (United States)

    Ravenscroft, P; McArthur, J M; Hoque, M A

    2013-06-01

In forty six wells >150 m deep, from across the arsenic-polluted area of south-central Bangladesh, groundwater composition remained unchanged between 1998 and 2011. No evidence of deteriorating water quality was found in terms of arsenic, iron, manganese, boron, barium or salinity over this period of 13 years. These deep tubewells have achieved operating lives of more than 20 years with minimal institutional support. These findings confirm that tubewells tapping the deep aquifers in the Bengal Basin provide a safe, popular, and economic, means of arsenic mitigation and are likely to do so for decades to come. Nevertheless, concerns remain about the sustainability of a resource that could serve as a source of As-safe water to mitigate As-pollution in shallower aquifers in an area where tens of millions of people are exposed to dangerous levels of arsenic in well water. The conjunction of the stable composition in deep groundwater and the severe adverse health effects of arsenic in shallow groundwater lead us to challenge the notion that strong sustainability principles should be applied to the management of deep aquifer abstraction in Bangladesh is, the notion that the deep groundwater resource should be preserved for future generations by protecting it from adverse impacts, probably of a minor nature, that could occur after a long time and might not happen at all. Instead, we advocate an ethical approach to development of the deep aquifer, based on adaptive abstraction management, which allows possibly unsustainable exploitation now in order to alleviate crippling disease and death from arsenic today while also benefiting future generations by improving the health, education and economy of living children.

abstract: whether or not any of the pre-chosen terms occurred at least once. Multiple occurrences, whether of the same term or of varying terms, played no role.Their analysis for the entire period of 1930 through 2009 was based on title data only, and did not take doctorate-granting institution into account. The separate analysis (N=2,305 for the period 1980 through 2009 excluded the thirty cases in which one or more of the terms occurred in the title but none of them occurred in the abstract.Main Results – One occurrence of any of the specified terms in the title was, for the overall period of 1930-2009, enough for any given dissertation to be qualified as having an explicit focus on libraries/librarianship. The percentage of such dissertations remained fairly stable from the 1930s through the 1980s, at between 56% and 62%, with the exception of an unexplained dip for the 1950s to 44.1%. Then, for the 1990s, the researchers discovered a fall-off from 57.9% to 36.0%, and in the following decade a further decrease, down to a level of 21.5%.During the separately-analyzed period 1980-2009, the percentage of dissertations with at least one of the specified terms in the title as well as in the abstract diminished steadily from well over half (58.4% for 1980-1984 to less than 1 in 5 (19.8% for 2005-2009. A chi-square test revealed that the relationship between year of dissertation and term occurrence is statistically significant. By far the greatest decrease, of 15 percentage points, was that between the first half and the second half of the 1990s. Interestingly, during the whole thirty-year period, the percentage where a term appeared not in the title but only in the abstract remained fairly constant, at around 20%, give or take about 2.5 percentage points. Yet when one looks at how many of the dissertations displayed none of the terms in the title and none in the abstract, one sees a continuous increase starting at 20.7% for 1980-1984 all the way up to 61.0% for 2005

  6. Towards Analysis-Driven Scientific Software Architecture: The Case for Abstract Data Type Calculus

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    Damian W.I. Rouson

    2008-01-01

Full Text Available This article approaches scientific software architecture from three analytical paths. Each path examines discrete time advancement of multiphysics phenomena governed by coupled differential equations. The new object-oriented Fortran 2003 constructs provide a formal syntax for an abstract data type (ADT calculus. The first analysis uses traditional object-oriented software design metrics to demonstrate the high cohesion and low coupling associated with the calculus. A second analysis from the viewpoint of computational complexity theory demonstrates that a more representative bug search strategy than that considered by Rouson et al. (ACM Trans. Math. Soft. 34(1 (2008 reduces the number of lines searched in a code with λ total lines from O(λ2 to O(λ log2 λ , which in turn becomes nearly independent of the overall code size in the context of ADT calculus. The third analysis derives from information theory an argument that ADT calculus simplifies developer communications in part by minimizing the growth in interface information content as developers add new physics to a multiphysics package.

Full Text Available In this paper a set of reflections and considerations are shown about how setting up the professional identity, understanding it as a synonymous of work identity in the light of characteristics of the world of contemporary work, which requires that individuals, who want to stay or to be included in the different job markets must present certain ways of behaving with others. These ways include an internalization of discourses associated with autonomy, independence, and competition, among other things, leading to a stronger responsibility of the individual about his own life, and thus on their employability. These reflections are supported in a study case that through the narratives of the participant, and using the idea association tree as the analysis technique, allows us to see some aspects that show how the working individuals are created today, which by having hybrid work ethics can move within the demands of the nowadays work world, in addition to being recognized as successful workers.

Ideological Critique of Marx and Philosophical Transformation This paper addresses a tendency today that tries to reinterpret the Marxist transformation in philosophy with a "non-ideological" perspective. It explicates the leap that Marx achieved from abstract human spirit and state reason to the proletariat world view, as well as the overall withdrawal from the abstract universalism. Such a leap and withdrawal is not only the key to the materialistic inversion of the Hegelian dialectics, but also the foundation for sticking to and enriching the Marxist philosophy. Without sticking to this direction, we will not be able to clearly understand Marxism as the successor and promoter of the magnificent cultural achievements of mankind, including the enlightenment thoughts and classical German philosophy, nor will we fully understand the value and strength of Marxist philosophy today.

The purpose of the inventory abstraction as directed by the development plan (CRWMS M&O 1999b) is to: (1) Interpret the results of a series of relative dose calculations (CRWMS M&O 1999c, 1999d). (2) Recommend, including a basis thereof, a set of radionuclides that should be modeled in the Total System Performance Assessment in Support of the Site Recommendation (TSPA-SR) and the Total System Performance Assessment in Support of the Final Environmental Impact Statement (TSPA-FEIS). (3) Provide initial radionuclide inventories for the TSPA-SR and TSPA-FEIS models. The scope of the radionuclide screening analysis encompasses the period from 100 years to 10,000 years after the potential repository at Yucca Mountain is sealed for scenarios involving the breach of a waste package and subsequent degradation of the waste form as required for the TSPA-SR calculations. By extending the time period considered to one million years after repository closure, recommendations are made for the TSPA-FEIS. The waste forms included in the inventory abstraction are Commercial Spent Nuclear Fuel (CSNF), DOE Spent Nuclear Fuel (DSNF), High-Level Waste (HLW), naval Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF), and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) plutonium waste. The intended use of this analysis is in TSPA-SR and TSPA-FEIS. Based on the recommendations made here, models for release, transport, and possibly exposure will be developed for the isotopes that would be the highest contributors to the dose given a release to the accessible environment. The Elasticity of Vague Language Abstract:This paper develops an overarching theoretical framework for dealing with the strategic elastic- ity of vague language. Employing the metaphor of a slingshot, it describes how the vague language (VL) is stretched to meet the needs of communication. Drawing attention to the positive and effective role played by VL, the study further looks into how the VL theory is derived from real - life data of ten- sion -prone encounters. The empirical evidence validates the theory~ main maxim and its four specific maxims, and lends support to the following findings: 1 ) the pragmatic functions which VL performs, their linguistic realizations, and the pragmatic maxims they conform to are interconnected; 2) the dom- inant factor in the functioning of VL is the communicative goal; and 3 ) stretching on a continuum of polarities, between soft and tough, firm and flexible, cooperative and uncooperative, shows the versa- tility and elasticity of VL. An important implication of this study is that while VL~ vagueness is context -governed and culture- denendent it~ nll A ~1.o~;.;~.. ; :

[Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations] Title: On Poseidon's Image in Homeric Epics Author: Zhu Yizhang, Lecturer, School of History and Culture, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, 250100, China. Abstract: Poseidon was an important role in religion, myth and literature of ancient Greece. His religious functions, and status in mythical image in literature were mainly established by Homeric Epics. Poseidon doesn't only appear frequently in the Homeric Epics but also influences the development of the plots directly; therefore, he could be seen as one of the most important gods in the Epics. But Homeric Epics do not introduce his basic image clearly. In Homeric Epics, Poseidon carries the deity and humanity aspect of the figure, and the latter was emphasized, which implied his archetype was a mortal wanax.

    2011-04-01

Full Text Available This paper investigates patterns of rhetorical convergence and divergence in pairs of RA abstracts (English-Spanish and Spanish-English published in the journal Ibérica. To that end, a total of 84 pairs of author-translated RA abstracts were analyzed. Based on the results of a pilot study, the following rhetorical patterns were analyzed in the corpus: text-referring expressions, degree of epistemic commitment, amplified attitude, self-mention, and periphrastic (e.g. multi-word expressions. In addition, selected authorial input was requested to seek further explanations about the variation across these two languages. For text-referring expressions, broad cross-linguistic convergence was found in the expressions used and the degree to which the text is given agency. By contrast, the abstracts in Spanish were found to include greater degree of epistemic commitment, more amplified expressions of attitude, more self-mention, particularly in the plural first person, and periphrastic equivalents. Authorial input indicated that some of these diverging patterns were due to collocational differences but they were also influenced by beliefs about what is more natural in Spanish. Our results suggest that there may be specific lexical bundles performing intensifying functions in Spanish that deserve further investigation. These findings may have implications for ESP pedagogy and translation studies.

  15. Haiku and Flamenco. A Paradigmatic Case of Conceptual Abstraction and Formal Minimalism with Special Focus on Notional and Procedural Meaning

    2013-12-01

Full Text Available The present work deals with the formal and semantic similarities between haiku and flamenco in a first study of this phenomenon, which is new. We study the notional and procedural meaning in haiku, and then in flamenco in order to explore the various minimalist mechanisms that govern the progression ofthought in the two languages. The research is based on the four basic semantic categories proposed by Eugene Nida and Charles R. Taber: Object (None,Event (Verb, Abstract (Adjective and Relation (Preposition. These are universal categories which encompass all the semantic subcategories extant in any language. The Object category corresponds to the Entity in a thought chronology and the Event and Abstract categories correspond to behaviour, and allof them correspond to notional or conceptual meaning. On the other hand, theRelation category is associated with procedural or instrumental meaning, becauseit expresses a connection between terms of other kinds, such as discourse markers, the order of elements in the phrase when it is relevant for the communication of inference, verbs like to be or to have, when they only express relationships. The kireji have a special interest because they are Japanese textstructure markers.

  10. The Word Composite Effect Depends on Abstract Lexical Representations But Not Surface Features Like Case and Font

    Science.gov (United States)

Ventura, Paulo; Fernandes, Tânia; Leite, Isabel; Almeida, Vítor B.; Casqueiro, Inês; Wong, Alan C.-N.

    2017-01-01

Prior studies have shown that words show a composite effect: When readers perform a same-different matching task on a target-part of a word, performance is affected by the irrelevant part, whose influence is severely reduced when the two parts are misaligned. However, the locus of this word composite effect is largely unknown. To enlighten it, in two experiments, Portuguese readers performed the composite task on letter strings: in Experiment 1, in written words varying in surface features (between-participants: courier, notera, alternating-cAsE), and in Experiment 2 in pseudowords. The word composite effect, signaled by a significant interaction between alignment of the two word parts and congruence between parts was found in the three conditions of Experiment 1, being unaffected by NoVeLtY of the configuration or by handwritten form. This effect seems to have a lexical locus, given that in Experiment 2 only the main effect of congruence between parts was significant and was not modulated by alignment. Indeed, the cross-experiment analysis showed that words presented stronger congruence effects than pseudowords only in the aligned condition, because when misaligned the whole lexical item configuration was disrupted. Therefore, the word composite effect strongly depends on abstract lexical representations, as it is unaffected by surface features and is specific to lexical items. PMID:28676783

  11. Is dissonance reduction a special case of fluid compensation? Evidence that dissonant cognitions cause compensatory affirmation and abstraction.

    Science.gov (United States)

Randles, Daniel; Inzlicht, Michael; Proulx, Travis; Tullett, Alexa M; Heine, Steven J

    2015-05-01

Cognitive dissonance theory shares much in common with other perspectives that address anomalies, uncertainty, and general expectancy violations. This has led some theorists to argue that these theories represent overlapping psychological processes. If responding to dissonance and uncertainty occurs through a common psychological process, one should expect that the behavioral outcomes of feeling uncertain would also apply to feelings of dissonance, and vice versa. One specific prediction from the meaning maintenance model would be that cognitive dissonance, like other expectancy violations, should lead to the affirmation of unrelated beliefs, or the abstraction of unrelated schemas when the dissonant event cannot be easily accommodated. This article presents 4 studies (N = 1124) demonstrating that the classic induced-compliance dissonance paradigm can lead not only to a change of attitudes (dissonance reduction), but also to (a) an increased reported belief in God (Study 2), (b) a desire to punish norm-violators (Study 1 and 3), (c) a motivation to detect patterns amid noise (Study 3), and (d) polarizing support of public policies among those already biased toward a particular side (Study 4). These results are congruent with theories that propose content-general fluid compensation following the experience of anomaly, a finding not predicted by dissonance theory. The results suggest that dissonance reduction behaviors may share psychological processes described by other theories addressing violations of expectations. (c) 2015 APA, all rights reserved).

  12. Evaluating association between linguistic characteristics of abstracts and risk of bias: Case of Japanese randomized controlled trials

    2017-01-01

Despite the ongoing growth in the number of published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and increased quality assessment of RCTs, the association between the quality and characteristics in the text has not been sufficiently studied. We are interested in a specific question: what kind of sentences is a good indicator of high quality RCTs? To help researchers to efficiently screen articles worth reading, this study aims 1) to quantify the linguistic features of articles and 2) to build a document assessment model to evaluate quality of RCTs using only the abstract. All RCTs that were conducted in Japan in 2010 as original articles were included in the analysis. Data were independently assessed by two reviewers using a risk-of-bias tool. Three aspects of linguistic style were quantitatively measured, and a document model was constructed to evaluate the RCTs. A total of 302 RCTs were selected for quality assessment. Of these, 255 articles were assessed as high quality and 47 as low quality. High-quality articles tended to use longer words than low-quality articles (p = 0.048), however sentences were generally shorter (p = 0.004). Further, high-quality articles included a larger proportion of noun phrases (p = 0.026) but a smaller proportion of verb phrases (p = 0.041). The optimal number of topics to assess the quality of articles was four, while two topics had a significant association with quality. Despite a number of articles published about RCTs in Japan, significant differences exist in several textual features between high- and low-quality RCTs. Instead of the risk-of-bias tool, these results can be used as the new criteria to rapidly screen valuable articles and it also revealed quality control of RCT articles is urgently needed in Japan.

  14. Using the abstraction network in complement to description logics for quality assurance in biomedical terminologies - a case study in SNOMED CT.

    Science.gov (United States)

    Wei, Duo; Bodenreider, Olivier

    2010-01-01

To investigate errors identified in SNOMED CT by human reviewers with help from the Abstraction Network methodology and examine why they had escaped detection by the Description Logic (DL) classifier. Case study; Two examples of errors are presented in detail (one missing IS-A relation and one duplicate concept). After correction, SNOMED CT is reclassified to ensure that no new inconsistency was introduced. DL-based auditing techniques built in terminology development environments ensure the logical consistency of the terminology. However, complementary approaches are needed for identifying and addressing other types of errors.

  15. Contested Domains of Science and Science Learning in Contemporary Native American Communities: Three Case Studies from a National Science Foundation grant titled, "Archaeology Pathways for Native Learners"

    Science.gov (United States)

    Parent, Nancy Brossard

This dissertation provides a critical analysis of three informal science education partnerships that resulted from a 2003-2006 National Science Foundation grant titled, "Archaeology Pathways for Native Learners" (ESI-0307858), hosted by the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center. This dissertation is designed to contribute to understandings of learning processes that occur within and at the intersection of diverse worldviews and knowledge systems, by drawing upon experiences derived from three disparate contexts: 1) The Navajo Nation Museum in Window Rock, Arizona; 2) The A:shiwi A:wan Museum and Heritage Center on the Zuni Reservation in Zuni, New Mexico; and 3) Science learning camps at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center for Native youth of southern New England. While informal science education is increasingly moving toward decolonizing and cross-cutting institutional boundaries of learning through critical thinking and real-world applications, the construction of "science" (even within diverse contexts) continues to be framed within a homogenous, predominantly Euro-American perspective. This study analyzes the language of Western science employed in these partnerships, with particular attention to the use of Western/Native binaries that shape perceptions of Native peoples and communities, real or imagined. Connections are drawn to broader nation-state interests in education, science, and the global economy. The role of educational evaluation in these case studies is also critically analyzed, by questioning the ways in which it is constructed, conducted, and evaluated for the purposes of informing future projects and subsequent funding. This study unpacks problems of the dominant language of "expert" knowledge embedded in Western science discourse, and highlights the possibilities of indigenous knowledge systems that can inform Western science frameworks of education and evaluation. Ultimately, this study suggests that research

Concurrent object-oriented programming in Beta is based on semaphores and coroutines and the ability to define high-level concurrency abstractions like monitors, and rendezvous-based communication, and their associated schedulers. The coroutine mechanism of SIMULA has been generalized...... into the notions of concurrent and alternating objects. Alternating objects may be used to start a cooperative thread for each possible blocking communication and is thus an alternative to asynchronous messages and guarded commands. Beta like SIMULA, the first OO language, was designed as a language for modeling...... as well as programming, and we describe how this has had an impact on the design of the language. Although Beta supports the definition of high-level concurrency abstractions, the use of these rely on the discipline of the programmer as is the case for Java and other mainstream OO languages. Full Text Available What lineage connects early abstract films and machine-generated YouTube videos? Hans Richter’s famous piece Rhythmus 21 is considered to be the first abstract film in the experimental tradition. The Webdriver Torso YouTube channel is composed of hundreds of thousands of machine-generated test patterns designed to check frequency signals on YouTube. This article discusses geometric abstraction vis-à-vis new vision, conceptual art and algorithmic art. It argues that the Webdriver Torso is an artistic marvel indicative of a form we call mathematical abstraction, which is art performed by computers and, quite possibly, for computers.

The study performed the survey among all 81 people who were working for customer service section of this company and consisted of two parts, in the first part; we gather all private information such as age, gender, education, job experience, etc. through seven important questions. In the second part of the survey, there were 66 questions, which included all the relevant factors impacting employees' stress. Cronbach alpha was calculated as 0.946, which is well above the minimum acceptable level. The implementation of ANOVA and LSD tests have revealed that there are no meaning differences among people with different job titles but people in different age groups maintained various level of stress.

  12. The trend toward more attractive and informative titles: American Psychologist 1946-2010.

    Science.gov (United States)

    Whissell, Cynthia

    2012-04-01

Titles of journal articles serve to attract attention and inform potential readers. All titles from 65 volumes of American Psychologist (1946-2010, N = 12,313 titles) were studied in terms of their emotionality, style, and contents. Several trends noted for titles in different kinds of journals from psychology and other disciplines were present in American Psychologist (increasing title length, increasing use of punctuation marks, increasing employment of words with pleasant and arousing connotations, variations in the frequency of different content words). Longer titles allow authors to specify more information, and emotionally upbeat titles are more likely to attract reader attention. In an unexpected quadratic trend, titles became more abstract and the number of titles increased until about 1985, after which the trend was reversed and titles became more concrete as their numbers decreased. Predictors of this trend include societal variables and the journal's editorial policies.

  13. CBM split title in Alberta

    Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Campbell, L.M. [EnCana Corp., Calgary, AB (Canada); Laurin, W.

    2006-07-01

Coalbed methane (CBM) coal underlies most of central and southern Alberta. This article discussed disputes surrounding CBM ownership and split-titles. Historically, ownership of lands in Alberta implied possession and rights of all under- and overground substances. Surface estates are now typically separated from the subsurface estate, and subsurface estates are further divided either on the basis of substances or stratigraphically to create a split-title. Mineral severances are used to separate respective mineral rights among owners. While there is a relative certainty that under provincial Crown tenure CBM is included in natural gas tenure, there is currently no Canadian jurisprudence in respect of CBM entitlement on split-title private lands. Where compressed natural gas (CNG) and coal are separately held, and CBM ownership is not specifically addressed in the mineral severance, there is no Canadian law respecting CBM ownership. Resolution of ownership issues has proceeded on a case by case basis. Coal owners argue that there is a distinct interrelationship between CBM and its host coal strata. Gas owners argue that the chemical composition of CBM is identical to CNG, and that the recovery method is similar to that of CNG. Courts have historically applied the vernacular test to resolve mineral substance ownership disputes, which considers the meanings of the word coal and coalbed methane as defined by industry. The most recent and relevant application of the vernacular test were the Borys/Anderson, which effectively implemented a gas-oil interface ownership determination, which if applied to a coal grant or reservation, may lead to the conclusion that the coal strata includes CBM. It was concluded that there are 26,000 individual mineral owners in Alberta that may become involved in CBM litigation. and could become parties to litigation. refs., tabs., figs.

  15. The formalization fix? Land titling and land concessions in Cambodia

    OpenAIRE

    Dwyer, Michael B.

    2015-01-01

Issuing land titles to smallholder farmers has long been embraced as a way to promote lending and land markets, but is increasingly being reframed as a way to protect smallholders from irresponsible agricultural investment. This brief examines the case of Cambodia, where over the last decade extensive land titling efforts have occurred alongside a wave of large-scale land concessions. The problem, however, is that titling has failed to live up to the rhetoric of systematic coverage, and has o...

Praise for the Third Edition ". . . an expository masterpiece of the highest didactic value that has gained additional attractivity through the various improvements . . ."-Zentralblatt MATH The Fourth Edition of Introduction to Abstract Algebra continues to provide an accessible approach to the basic structures of abstract algebra: groups, rings, and fields. The book's unique presentation helps readers advance to abstract theory by presenting concrete examples of induction, number theory, integers modulo n, and permutations before the abstract structures are defined. Readers can immediately be

    Monaghan, John; Ozmantar, Mehmet Fatih

    2006-01-01

The framework for this paper is a recently developed theory of abstraction in context. The paper reports on data collected from one student working on tasks concerned with absolute value functions. It examines the relationship between mathematical constructions and abstractions. It argues that an abstraction is a consolidated construction that can…

  18. Graph Subsumption in Abstract State Space Exploration

    NARCIS (Netherlands)

Zambon, Eduardo; Rensink, Arend; Wijs, A.; Bosnacki, D.; Edelkamp, S.

In this paper we present the extension of an existing method for abstract graph-based state space exploration, called neighbourhood abstraction, with a reduction technique based on subsumption. Basically, one abstract state subsumes another when it covers more concrete states; in such a case, the

  19. Abstraction and Problem Reformulation

    Science.gov (United States)

    Giunchiglia, Fausto

    1992-01-01

In work done jointly with Toby Walsh, the author has provided a sound theoretical foundation to the process of reasoning with abstraction (GW90c, GWS9, GW9Ob, GW90a). The notion of abstraction formalized in this work can be informally described as: (property 1), the process of mapping a representation of a problem, called (following historical convention (Sac74)) the 'ground' representation, onto a new representation, called the 'abstract' representation, which, (property 2) helps deal with the problem in the original search space by preserving certain desirable properties and (property 3) is simpler to handle as it is constructed from the ground representation by "throwing away details". One desirable property preserved by an abstraction is provability; often there is a relationship between provability in the ground representation and provability in the abstract representation. Another can be deduction or, possibly inconsistency. By 'throwing away details' we usually mean that the problem is described in a language with a smaller search space (for instance a propositional language or a language without variables) in which formulae of the abstract representation are obtained from the formulae of the ground representation by the use of some terminating rewriting technique. Often we require that the use of abstraction results in more efficient .reasoning. However, it might simply increase the number of facts asserted (eg. by allowing, in practice, the exploration of deeper search spaces or by implementing some form of learning). Among all abstractions, three very important classes have been identified. They relate the set of facts provable in the ground space to those provable in the abstract space. We call: TI abstractions all those abstractions where the abstractions of all the provable facts of the ground space are provable in the abstract space; TD abstractions all those abstractions wllere the 'unabstractions' of all the provable facts of the abstract space are
