At the 7th Healthy Buildings Conference, which was held in Singapore, 7-11 December 2003, more than 500 articles to improve public health and productivity of workers in buildings and the performance of installations. Special attention is paid to indoor air quality and thermal comfort in relation to energy efficiency. [Dutch] Op de laatste Healthy Buildings conferentie, december 2003 in Singapore, werden meer dan 500 artikelen gepresenteerd over het creeren van gezonde, productiviteit verhogende gebouwen en installaties. Deze keer lag de nadruk op binnenluchtkwaliteit en thermisch binnenklimaat, onder andere op het aspect energiezuinigheid. Opvallend was ook de aandacht die de problemen met binnenluchtkwaliteit in ontwikkelingslanden kreeg.

In the first part of the nineties many office buildings were equipped with indoor climate installations which do not meet present standards. Several options are available to improve such installations for ventilation capacity, cooling capacity, thermal comfort and air quality. One of the options concern the installation of an air conditioner in combination with heat recovery. LP steam turbine retrofits are generally undertaken as a result of mechanical problems, for example due to stress corrosion cracking, torsional vibration or erosion. They present plant operators with an opportunity to introduce advanced aerodynamic technology, and at the same time improve efficiency and availability. Standard components, the majority proven in long-term service, can be used to obtain a permanent solution to the problems. The VerTech Pit Method for wet oxidation of municipal sewage sludge offers an ecologically and economically advantageous alternative for dealing with sewage and special sludges. Europe`s first commercial plant has now been commissioned in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands following industrial-scale trials in the USA. Up to its present stage of operation the plant has achieved a high degree of reduction of solid residues and a favourable resource and environmental profile, thus impressively confirming earlier results. It is amply in keeping with the landfill criteria laid down in the Household Waste Technical Code. Furthermore, the potential sludge throughput has been found to exceed the projected value. Being aware of its responsibility in the field of environmental policy it is looking for an alternative solution of an environmentally friendly vehicle drive system that also takes into account economic efficiency. Extensive investigations have led to a new energy storage based on the zinc-air energy system that has been developed and manufactured by the Israeli Company Electric Fuel Ltd. The first volume of the report covers the state of implementation of primary and secondary measures for SO{sub 2}- and NO{sub x} control applied in the most important industrial sectors in Germany. Integrated pollution abatement techniques, called primary measures in this report, such as process integrated measures and low emission processes, have gained increased importance in recent years. The end-of-pipe processes, described here as secondary measures, are generally highly effective. They represent mature technologies, which are capable of achieving significant reductions in SO{sub 2}- and NO{sub x} emissions, and which have been used in particular for retrofitting existing plants.
