Bochmann, J.; Bochmann, U.; Heinrich, H. J.; Michel, B.
1994-01-01

Concepts for taking out, conditioning and packing of special solid waste and fission products solution are described. The waste arose from the production of radioactive isotops and sources and from the operation of the research reactor in Rossendorf. In consideration of the specific storage-conditions a flexible remote-controlled system for taking out is needed. On the base of a mock-up test with an electric master-slave-manipulator an management-concept is described. For conditioning the liquid waste the application of pelletizing, cementation and drying is investigated. The results of pelletizing bases on tests with a pelletizing equipment. The conditioning methods are compared and in result pelletizing is proposed as preference concept. (orig.)

Investigations related to the management of wastes from the Rossendorf research reactor. Project study. Untersuchungen zur Entsorgung des Forschungsreaktors im Zentralinstitut fuer Kernforschung (ZfK) Rossendorf. Projektstudie

Quaas, H.; Boerner, H. J.; Wolf, D.
1991-01-01

The objective of the study consists in working out a technologically continuous waste management concept for the spent nuclear fuel from the Rossendorf research reactor (RFR) in operation since 1957. After backfitting, including replacement of the reactor pressure vessel, the facility went into operation again in January 1990 and continued until 30 June 1991. The fuel elements spent so far are stored compactly under water in two storage ponds near the RFR which have a total capacity of 3498 storage places. 2100 of them are already occupied by fuel elements which differ in their geometrical dimensions, in the type of fuel, and in number. During normal operation 200 fuel elements arise annually. In this regard, the Central Institute of Nuclear Research at Rossendorf faces the following problems: The USSR does not take back the spent nuclear fuel. About 70% of their storage capacity ...

(HFR-B1 experiment reporting and capsule disassembly)

Myers, B. F.

The traveler visited the Joint Research Centre (JRC), Petten, The Netherlands, the Forschungszentrum GmbH (KFA), Juelich, Germany; and the Zentralinstitut fuer Kernforschung (ZfK), Rossendorf, Germany, during the period January 28 through February 9. At JRC, the analysis of the experiment HFR-B1 was discussed; a new schedule for issuance of the final data report was established. Other discussions at JRC concerned the capabilities of Petten to conduct two reactor experiments being proposed under the US/FRG cooperative program and the initial results of a proof test of Germany fuel spheres. At KFA, the main emphasis was on the disassembly of capsules 2 and 3 of the HFR-B1 experiment and agreement on the examinations and tests to be conducted with the disassembled components. The disassembly of capsule 3 was observed. Extensive discussions were conducted on the work, both experimental and analytical, being conducted in the Institut fuer Sicherheitsforschung und Reaktor Technologie. A major portion of the experimental work is being conducted at ZfK and a visit to this laboratory, sponosored by the KFA, was made on February 6 and 7. Cooperation with the US on the experimental and analytical work in the safety area was strongly emphasized. 1 tab.

During normal operation 200 fuel elements arise annually. In this regard, the Central Institute of Nuclear Research at Rossendorf faces the following problems: The USSR does not take back the spent nuclear fuel; about 70% of their storage capacity is already utilized; the storage ponds have to be backfitted to guarantee leak tightness. That requires a temporary relocation of the fuel elements and waste management start in January 1994. There are no waste management technologies and techniques available for the RFR, and the integrity of several fuel elements is endangered due to already visible corrosion effects. (orig.). Juni 1991 wieder in Betrieb. Im Normalbetrieb fallen jaehrlich 200 BE an. Disassembly and disposal of the nuclear installations of VKTA on the Rossendorf research site; Der Rueckbau der kerntechnischen Anlagen des VKTA am Forschungsstandort Rossendorf

Helwig, U. [VKTA, Dresden (Germany)]; Boessert, W. [VKTA, Dresden (Germany). Fachbereich Rueckbau]
2002-04-01

The Verein fuer Kernverfahrenstechnik und Analytik Rossendorf e.V. (VKTA) has been commissioned to shut down and dismantle the old nuclear installations of the former Central Institute for Nuclear Research of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR on the Rossendorf research site, some of which have existed since 1957, and to properly dispose of the nuclear fuels and radioactive waste. The application of the West German Atomic Law beginning in 1991 resulted in a difficult situation. A great number of new licenses was necessary as also equivalent structures at the licensee and the responsible authorities. All this tasks have been completed in time. New infrastructure was created for this purpose, such as facilities for the interim storage of nuclear material and the treatment for radioactive waste. The special activities are described in this contribution. Three demolition complexes were created at VKTA. Demolition complex 1 combines all reactors and the former experimental uranium facility. Demolition complex 2 includes all plants and buildings connected with the former isotope production. The former waste stores and the special sewer system constitute demolition complex 3. The status of decommissioning activities is presented, and the material to be managed as waste is described. In conclusion, an outlook is presented of the future activities of VKTA on the basis of the 'VKTA 2000 plus Concept' approved by the Saxonian cabinet early this year. (orig.) (orig.)

Science for power and the market. Nuclear research and microelectronics in the Federal Republic of Germany. Wissenschaft fuer Macht und Markt. Kernforschung und Mikroelektronik in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland

Eckert, M.; Osietzki, M.
1989-01-01

Nuclear research and microelectronics rank foremost in importance in recent federal German technology history. So far unpublished documentary materials are made use of by the authors to demonstrate how both these technology sectors have increasingly been governed by economic, military, and political interests. The first approach to nuclear technology is represented by the purchase of the first research reactor, called 'atom egg', from the USA and the planning phase for the Kernforschungsanlage Juelich. The early history of particle accelerators and the beginning of fusion research offer insight into two areas corollary to nuclear research. The chapter on microelectronics is concerned with the beginnings of semi-conductor research at Siemens, the marketing of the first self-fabricated and fully transistorized computer in the Federal Repbulic of Germany, and ...

From nuclear research to nuclear technology.

Mueller, W. D.
1988-01-01

The history of nuclear power is a worldwide history, with many ramifications, of science, technology and economy. At the same time, it is also political history. From the beginning, nuclear fission and its consequences have aroused the interest of the public to a degree no other discovery and development had done before. The scientific sensation was followed by the revolution in warfare brought about by the atom bomb and by nuclear submarine propulsion. The discussions and controversies about finding the right way in which to use nuclear power for peaceful purposes and meet the greatest expectations have always been of particular interest to the public, despite the disenchantment that was bound to arise in the process. This state of affairs did not change in the next phase, when nuclear facilities became mature plants for electricity generation and nuclear power began to be ...

Crossing of Phantom Divide in $F(R)$ Gravity

Bamba, Kazuharu; Geng, Chao-Qiang; Nojiri, Shin'Ichi; Odintsov, Sergei D.
2010-03-04

An explicit model of $F(R)$ gravity with realizing a crossing of the phantom divide is reconstructed. In particular, it is shown that the Big Rip singularity may appear in the reconstructed model of $F(R)$ gravity. Such a Big Rip singularity could be avoided by adding $R^2$ term or non-singular viable $F(R)$ theory to the model because phantom behavior becomes transient.

Spherical Symmetric Solution in f(R) Model Around Charged Black Hole

Aghamohammadi, A.; Saaidi, Kh; Abolhasani, M. R.; Vajdi, A.
2010-01-26

A static, asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric solutions is investigated in f(R) theories of gravity for a charged black hole. We have studied the weak field limit of f(R) gravity for the some f(R) model such as f(R) = R + epsilon h(R). In particular, weconsider the case lim_{R =0} {h(R)/ dh(R)/dR}=0 and find the space time metric for f(R) = R + {mu}^{4} /R and f(R) = R^{1-epsilon} theories of gravity far away a charged mass point.

Experimental and theoretical study of the nuclear structure of 223Fr

Sheline, R. K.; Liang, C. F.; Paris, P.; Kvasil, J.; Nosek, D.
1995-01-01

The experimental level structure of 223Fr has been studied using the 1.4% alpha decay of 21.8 yr 227Ac and subsequent gamma rays to extend the level scheme recently observed following the beta- decay of 223Rn. The level structure of 223Fr was also studied theoretically by using the quasiparticle model of Soloviev with octupole degrees of freedom. Both experimentally and theoretically there is strong evidence that 223Fr is reflection asymmetric. The theoretical study of microscopic structure of several of the positive-parity bands also indicates the presence of important Nilsson configurations arising from the shell below. The comparison of the level structures of 223Fr, 221Fr, and 219Fr tends to elaborate the mechanism by which the ...

In commission of the International Atomic (nuclear) Energy Agency (IAEA), investigations were conducted in the Zentral Institut fuer Kernforschung (Central Institute for Nuclear research) Rossendorf involving knowledge-based text investigations in safety-relevant documents of the operative works of a nuclear facility. This knowledge exists primarily in the form of text. By introducing an explicit representation of the limiting values and conditions of the sure operation, the knowledge embodied in these documents can be used for diagnostics and therapy of the system state. Various methods of the text investigation as well as the option for gaining state-dependent control and maintenance remarks were implemented. The program is currently being tested with a reduced data set of limiting values and conditions of the protected operation for the reactor type WWER-440. The entire system knowledge is archieved separate from the processing mechanism and can be adapted to the current requirements by the user. The exchange of the total knowledge basis is also conceivable for simulating another reactor type. Modules for the acquisition of knowledge and verification simplify the adaption to the alternating environmental conditions. (orig.).

Percutaneous Femoral Closure Following Stent-Graft Placement: Use of the Perclose Device

Quinn, Stephen F.; Kim, Jinho
2004-01-01

Purpose: To describe our early clinical experience using the Prostar Perclose device for arterial closure after placement of a stent-graft.Methods: Sixty-three patients had stent-graft devices placed for iliac (n = 7), abdominal aortic (n = 43) or thoracic applications (n = 13). The devices were introduced through 18 Fr (22 Fr O.D.) (n = 3), 16 Fr (20 Fr O.D.) (n = 15), 14 Fr (18 Fr O.D.) (n = 44) or 12 Fr (14 Fr O.D.) (n = 38) sheaths. After Perclose deployment, the arteriotomies were dilated to the appropriate sizes for the deployment sheaths. All patients were anticoagulated during the procedure. After stent-graft deployment, hemostasis was achieved by the Perclose sutures that were in place. All the femoral sites were followed with physical examination and CT angiography (CTA).Results:The follow-up periods have ranged from 2 to 18 months (mean 7.5 months). All 100 femoral sites ...

Spherical Symmetric Solution in f(R) Model Around Charged Black Hole

Aghmohammadi, A. Saaidi, K. Abolhassani, M. R. Vajdi, A.
2010-01-01

A static, asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric solutions is investigated in f(R) theories of gravity for a charged black hole. We have studied the weak field limit of f(R) gravity for the some f(R) model such as f(R)=R+ h(R). In particular, we consider the case lim R0 h(R)/h(R)0 and find the space time metric for Formula Not Shown and f(R)=R 1+ theories of gravity far away a charged mass point.

Feasibility study on commercialized FR cycle systems in Japan. The results in the first phase and future plans of the study

Hiroshi, Noda [Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute, FBR Cycle System Development Office, Ibaraki (Japan)]; Tatsutoshi, Inagaki [Japan Atomic Power Co., Research and Development Dept. Tokyo (Japan)]
2001-07-01

Feasibility study on commercialized FR cycle systems has been carried out by a joint team established within JNC with the participation of all parties concerned in Japan since July, 1999. This research program aims to clarify various perspectives for commercializing the FR cycle. This also will suggest development strategies that correspond flexibly to diverse future social needs in the century 21. The activities in Phase 1 have progressed as planned, and the highly feasible candidate concepts for FR cycle Systems were screened, and the development challenges for Phase 2 were identified. Continuous purification of 223Fr from its decay products on a nickel hexacyanoferrate(II) composite ion exchanger

Szeglowski, Z.; Constantinescu, O.; Hussonnois, M.; Abdul-Hadi, A.; Ardisson, G. J.
1994-01-01

Continuous isolation and purification of 223Fr from 227Ac and its daughters has been performed. 223Fr was sorbed on a column filled with nickel hexacyanoferrate(II) composite ion exchanger and the decay products were continuously eluted with 0.01 M EDTA solution. For the first time, pure gamma-spectra of 223Fr, without perturbing gamma-lines of its decay-products were recorded. 88 new gamma-transitions were put in evidence. (orig.)

The knight shift of francium in mercury

Haas, H.; Stenzel, C.; Mahnke, H. E.; Spellmeyer, B.; Zeitz, W. D.; Berlin, Freie U.
1990-01-01

For Fr in Hg an extremely small Knight shift has been found as compared to the shift known for an alkali metal host. It indicates an almost complete loss of the outer s-electron of the alkali atom Fr when embedded in liquid mercury. This may be understood as a consequence of the small ionization energy of the Fr atom in comparison with the large work function of mercury. (orig.)

Synthesis of the optically active key intermediate of FR901483

Ieda, S. Kan, T. Fukuyama, T.
2010-01-01

Efficient synthesis of the tricyclic key intermediate 2 for (-)-FR901483 1 was accomplished. The precursor of the intramolecular aldol reaction 4b is constructed by the Ugi 4CC reaction and subsequent intramolecular Dieckmann condensation. This approach allows a fully stereocontrolled total synthesis of (-)-FR901483, which would provide various derivatives.

Gromov, K. Y.; Kudrya, S. A.; Norseev, Yu V.; Samatov, Zh K.; Sergienko, V. A.; Fominykh, V. I.; Chumin, V. G.

The results of investigating the ^{221}Rn beta^{-}-decay and the ^{225}Ac alpha-decay are compared. It is shown that ^{221}Fr levels at 145.9 and 393.2 keV are excited at the ^{221}Rn decay. Intensities and reduced probabilities of the beta^{-}-decay to the ^{221}Fr levels are determined. A conclusion is drawn that the parity of the ^{221}Rn ground state is positive.

Being excited by the detection of the first ever-observed optical flare in FR Cnc, we decided to continue photometrical monitoring of this object. The observations were carried out at Crimean Astrophysical Observatory (Crimea, Ukraine; CrAO - hereafter) and at the Terskol Observatory (Russia, Northern Caucasus). The obtained lightcurves are presented and discussed. No distinguishable flares were detected that could imply that flares on FR Cnc are very rare event.

Holographic Dark Energy Like in $f(R)$ Gravity

Saaidi, Kh; Aghamohammadi, A.
2010-10-13

We investigate the corresponding relation between $f(R)$ gravity and holographic dark energy. We introduce a kind of energy density from $f(R)$ which has role of the same as holographic dark energy. We obtain the differential equation that specify the evolution of the introduced energy density parameter based on varying gravitational constant. We find out a relation for the equation of state parameter to low redshifts which containing varying $G$ correction.

Extension of the EGS theorem to metric and Palatini f(R) gravity

Faraoni, Valerio
2008-11-13

By using the equivalence between metric and Palatini f(R) (or "modified") gravities with omega=0, -3/2 Brans-Dicke theories, it is shown that the Ehlers-Geren-Sachs theorem of general relativity is extended to modified gravity. In the case of metric f(R) gravity previously studied, this agrees with previous literature.
