Evaluation of the corrosion and corrosion-mechanical damage of the primary piping material of WWER-440/V213c units in operating conditions

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The sensitivity of the primary circuit material was examined at the Mochovce and Dukovany NPPs. No significant sensitivity of the base material or the weld metal to the initiation of corrosion cracking was observed. Thermal aging was found to accelerate significantly the corrosion fatigue kinetics in the material of the heat affected zone. The threshold values of the double amplitudes of the stress intensity factor were below 8 MPa/m"2 for the materials examined, with a cycle asymmetry coefficient of 0.65. The tests revealed no appreciable sensitivity to general corrosion, pitting, or intergranular corrosion. (J.B.). 7 tabs., 26 figs., 11 refs.

Replacement of nickel sealing rings by expanded graphite sealing rings -upgrading of SG primary collector flange connection

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

One of the most loaded parts of a steam generator of VVER 440 MW type are the bolts and thread holes of the primary collector cover sealing set. The strength calculations and tensometric measurings performed during operation proved the high degree of a load on the bolts. The conditions of the stress limitation are not met in some cases according to the pertinent standards. The untightnesses at nickel rings occurred during putting the units of Jaslovske Bohunice and Dukovany nuclear power stations into operation. With regard to improve the reliability, the producer has taken measures to improve the quality of the rings and users have introduced more strict regulations for bolts tightening. Due to these measures the high reliability of the set has been obtained from point of view of the tightness, but substantial reduction of bolts and holes threads loading have not been obtained. Several years operation experience proved relatively low service of bolts, damage of ...

Determination of parameters of the environment for equipment qualification at the Dukovany NPP. Post-accident parameters on the +14.7 m floor. Operating parameters on the +14.7 m floor and in the hermetic zone. Rev. 4

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

A detailed outline of the application of the MELCOR and RELAP5/MOD3.1 codes to the analysis of the thermohydraulic response and determination of other parameters of the medium on the floor is given for several classes of secondary coolant circuit accidents along with the description of the related facilities. An overview is presented of the maximum values and time behavior of the thermohydraulic parameters, pressure, temperature, relative humidity, and water level on the floor. Transverse rupture of the steam generator, main steam header, or main feedwater header piping during normal operation is considered as the initiating event. Pressure is only 10% higher than the atmospheric pressure. Air temperature attains a value as high as 100 degC. Relative humidity is 100%, persisting as long as the steam source is available. The water level is typically about 8 cm and never exceeds 15 cm. (M.D.). 16 tabs., 37 figs., 32 refs.

Weld metal as strong as base metal?; Schweisszusatzwerkstoffe koennen/muessen nicht immer die Anforderungen der Grundwerkstoffe erfuellen

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The development of new steels is always a challenge for the manufacturer of filler metals. In many cases it is obvious that some properties of the base metal cannot be fulfilled with matching filler metals. In some cases, dissimilar filler metals can solve the problem in some cases, there is no chance to meet the requirements of the base metal (for example yield strengths of new ultra high strength steels). This paper deals with different kinds of new steels and the requirements for the weld metal with examples from motor car industry (Mangan Austenite), crane (Ultra high strength steels), earthmoving machinery (Wear-resistant steels) and offshore (Supermartensitic steels). Specific problems will be discussed and best solutions will be highlighted. These examples make clear that the success of new kinds of steels in the market depends on solving the joining problems of these steels. (Abstract Copyright [2007], Wiley Periodicals, Inc.) The utilization of non-destructive method for in-service inspections in nuclear power components

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

To ensure safe and reliable power production nuclear power plants must be operated at high level. Non destructive in-service inspections are inseparable part of the effort. Non destructive in-service inspections are essential on the ground of degradation mechanisms existence in nuclear power components. Degradation processes are constituent of operation of each industrial installation including nuclear power plants. Mission of non-destructive testing is degradation detection, closer characterization of its parameters (dimensions) and to supply as much information as possible to nuclear power plant operator. Eddy current testing method can be assigned to surface - volumetric methods. Method enables inspection of electrically conductive materials. It is particularly suitable for inspection of non-ferromagnetic materials like austenitic stainless steel and brass. The method is used for detection of stress corrosion cracking, pitting corrosion or surface corrosion. The method experienced ...

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Computerized descriptions of isothermal, multi-stage creep fatigue load were established for one melt each of steels of the type 1%CrMoNiV and 12%CrMoV and were implemented in the service life prediction program SARA 2. SARA 2 predicts the time and number of cycles to incipient cracking for a given number of part cycles on the basis of rules for description of cyclic deformation and damage and of a generalized damage accumulation hypothesis. Measurements of the DDT Process in Laser and Exploding Bridgewire Detonators

Science.gov (United States)

The deflagration-to-detonation transition of low density (0.88 g/cc) PETN during initiation by both an exploding bridgewire and laser driven source is being studied using both laser interferometry and streak photography. Cutback experiments using VISAR have confirmed a 1.0 mm run-distance to detonation in low density PETN powder. In a detonation system using a combination of low and high density powders, an apparent center of initiation (COI) analysis of streak data has yielded a surprisingly similar result. This data suggests that a compaction of low density powder to near theoretical maximum density (TMD) occurs before the onset of detonation, which is consistent with work done previously.^1 Additionally, data analysis shows that although function time increases significantly with decreasing firing voltage, the apparent COI changes very little. This indicates that the detonation criteria is not dependant upon the rate of deflagration, but on a volume of material that must be burned ...

Microbial remediation of soil pollution from ore mining. Part 3: Cyanide removal and biosorption of heavy metals in mining and processing water; Untersuchungen zur mikrobiellen Sicherung von Erzbergbaualtlasten. Teilvorhaben 3: Cyanidabbau und Biosorption von Schwermetallen in Abwaessern aus Erzbergbau- und Aufbereitungsbetrieben. Abschlussbericht

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

1. Cyanide degradation: Of the cyanide- and thiocyanate-degrading bacteria, Burkholderia cepacia and Pseudomonas spec. were the most effective. 2. Biosorption: Of the isolates suited for biosorption of heavy metals, 597-A (non-identifiable) and 597-A2 (Aspergillus fumigatis) had the biggest potential. The sorption capacity of the fungi for metals varied with the C source used for their growth: apple juice > molasses > glucose. The fungi are not cyanide-sensitive and can even degrade cyanide. Living biomass had better metal sorption efficiencies than dead mycelium. The biosorption rates in waste water were usually higher than in broth. Depending on the metal composition and concentrations and on the exposure time and volume of the mycelia, up to 85 % of the initial concentration was removed from the liquid phase. The capacity of different biomasses for the sorption of metal mixtures was between 65 and 80 mg/g of dry matter depending on the experimental conditions, with ...

Simulation of char combustion according to shrinking particle and shrinking core model in circulating fluidized bed boilers; Simulation des Koksabbrandes nach dem Shrinking Particle- und Shrinking Core Modell in zirkulierenden Wirbelschichtfeuerungen

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The presented paper describes the formulation of the fractional mass balances which are used to calculate the concentration and size distribution of char in the balance cells of a circulating fluidized bed boiler. In case of using the shrinking core model additionally the distribution of conversion of the char particles is calculated. Basically two reaction models (a shrinking particle and a shrinking core model) are available to describe the combustion process. The model considers all essential physico/chemical phenomena (primary fragmentation, attrition, mass transfer to gas phase) which have to be taken into account for the description of the combustion process. The model is part of an overall simulation program for circulating fluidized bed boilers. This engineering simulator has been developed to return the main performance parameters of such systems like temperature along the furnace height, size distribution of balanced solid components, heat flows at the different heat ...

Biosorption of heavy metals under anaerobic conditions. Final report; Biosorption von Schwermetallen unter anaeroben Bedingungen. Abschlussbericht

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The precipitation of heavy metals as hydroxides is the standard technique for the decontamination of waste water streams polluted by these elements. On the other side, progress in research has been made concerning the biosorption onto dead biomass and bioprecipitation supported by physiologically active bacteria. As the aim of this study, a flexible strategy has been envisaged cleaning a waste water with definite heavy metal load underlying the process mentioned above. Suitable bacteria were enriched and the process was tested in a technical plant. As result, a very high efficiency of heavy metal elimination has been found. The field of application covered by the acquired process is identical with the whole range of the waste water streams polluted by heavy metals. In addition, a second stage may be necessary if there are any further contaminants to be removed. (orig.) Supervision of construction, quality assurance, operating experience in the new heating power station II; Bauueberwachung, Qualitaetssicherung, Betriebserfahrungen mit dem neuen Heizkraftwerk II

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

After 3 years of construction the trial run of the heating power station HKW 2 ended in November 1997 on time. No extraordinary damage occured during construction, assembly or commissioning. The plant has been operating according to schedule since November 1997. A brief inspection carried out in the summer of 1998 in order to assess warranty claims showed no damage to any part except one valve. Experience shows that all aforementioned activities were necessary. The paper reports about success and negative experience. Certification according to DIN EN ISO 9000ff., however, affords to guarantee of high-quality construction. Builders of such plants therefore need to set up their own quality assurance centre and ensure its technical competence. If necessary, additional experts should be called in.Quality assurance costs for HKW 2 came to about 0.5-0.6 percent of total costs. In view of the success and long life of this investment these expenses are more than justified. (orig.) [German] Nach ...

A thermographic method as an alternative for gravimetric determination of the particulate diesel emissions; Ein thermographisches Messverfahren als Alternative zur Gravimetrie bei der Ermittlung von Dieselpartikel-Emissionen

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The basis of assessment for particulate exhaust emissions is the gravimetric analysis of the particle concentration of diluted exhaust gases at temperatures below 52 C. This is very time consuming and takes sufficient sensitivity at low particulate emission rates like downstream of particle filters. For this reason the C/S-method, based on the thermographic analysis of carbon and sulfur, has been developed as an alternative to the gravimetric anallysis. This method yields particle mass as well as the main particle compounds. Comparisons between both methods have been carried out for heavy duty and automobile diesel engines as well as road vehicles and large diesel engines. The tests were conducted with commercial diesel fuel and also with other fuels, such as heavy oils. It could be shown that the C/S-procedure yields the same results as the gravimetric procedure independent of engine, engine mode and kind of fuel. The analysis of all important particulate compounds - elemental carbon ...

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Purpose: An animal model is used to investigate whether MR angiography combined with super-paramagnetic particles of iron oxide (SPIO) is suitable for detecting thromboses. Methods: 42 rats in groups of 7 each were examined on days 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11, respectively, after mechanical/chemical thrombus induction in a 1.5 Tesla magnet with a FISP sequence (TR/TE/FA 50 ms/6 ms/40 ). Imaging was performed before and up to 90 minutes after intravenous injection of 30 {mu}mol FE/kg BW of the experimental SPIO (hydrodynamic diameter, 34{+-}17 nm LLS; R1 and R2 relaxivity at 0.47 T, 31 and 57 L/(mmol*s)). MIP reconstructions of MR angiographies were submitted to consensus assessment by two examiners using histology as the gold standard. Results: The image quality of MIP reconstructions was rated as good in 38 of 42 cases. With regard to thrombotic vessel occlusion, MR angiography coincided with histology in 17 of 42 cases and differed in 25, lumen narrowing being overestimated by MRI in 4 ...

Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of acquired abnormalities of the inner ear and cerebello-pontine angle; CT und MRT erworbener Veraenderungen des Innenohrs und Kleinhirnbrueckenwinkels

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

CT and MRI of acquired abnormalities of the inner ear and cerebello-pontine angle present themselves with very typical findings. The imaging should be adapted to the pathology looked for and either CT or MRI should be used alone or in combination.CT, especially high resolution CT (HRCT), provides an excellent bone contrast, while MRI has a much superior soft tissue contrast. Acute inflammatory changes of the inner ear are solely depicted by contrast-enhanced MRI. HRCT excellently depicts osseous changes of the inner ear and cerebellopontine angle such as chronic ossifying labyrinthitis occurring after acute labyrinthitis, otosclerotic or traumatic changes. Tumorous changes not yielding to bony changes are best delineated by MRI. Posttraumatic hemorrhage and chronic fibrotic changes within the labyrinth are depicted by MRI, only. In conclusion HRCT and MRI are excellent methods to delineate acquired abnormalities of the inner ear and cerebello-pontine angle. HRCT best depicts osseous ...

Incidence of lesions as described by MRI in focal epilepsy of frontal and temporal onset; Inzidenz kernspintomographisch erfassbarer Laesionen bei der Abklaerung fokaler Epilepsien frontalen und temporalen Ursprunges

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Aim: Today, MRI is an integral part of the presurgical evaluation of patients suffering from partial epilepsy. These patients frequently show focal morphological abnormalities with potential epileptogenic character and surgical resection of these lesions is associated with superior postsurgical outcome as to seizure frequency. Apart from easily detectable defects, such as post-traumatic lesions or cerebral infarction, as wide variety of mainly small abnormalities can be detected using MRI. Methods: In this study, 484 patients suffering from partial epilepsy of temporal or frontal onset were evaluated for the incidence of different lesions in this population. Results: All lesions found were included without evaluating their potential epileptogenicity, which remains to be proven using other procedures (EEG, SPECT, PET, etc.). Involvement of the hippocampal formation was a major finding in temporal lobe epilepsy, which could be detected as sclerosis (T2w-images), atrophy (T2w-TSE or ...

Quantitative analysis of spinal CSF dynamics using magnetic resonance imaging: experimental and clinical studies; MR-tomographische Liquorflussmessungen am Spinalkanal mit einem optimierten MRT-Protokoll: experimentelle und klinische Untersuchungen

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Purpose: Measurement of the oscillating CSF flow in the spinal canal (SC) of healthy volunteers and in patients with post-traumatic syringomyelia (PTS) using an optimized MRI protocol as well as to determine whether stenosis induced velocity changes are detectable using MRI. Methods: In 68 healthy volunteers quantitative studies of CSF flow in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions were performed. First, an optimized sequence was developed and tested in 19 volunteers using four different flow-encoding velocities (4, 8, 12, 16 cm/s). Secondly, the optimized sequence was employed in 49 volunteers to measure the different CSF patterns in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spinal canals (CSC, TSC, LSC). Part three of the study, in which patients with PTS are being examined is still underway. We measured the maximum velocity (cm/s), the pixel area (mm{sup 2}), and the stroke volume (ml/s). Using a flow model the velocities prior to and after compression with 5 different power levels ...
