MACHO observations of Type II cepheids and RV Tauri Stars in the LMC

Science.gov (United States)

We report the of the existence of RV Tauri stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This class of variable star has hitherto been unidentified in the Magellanic Clouds. In light and color curve behavior the RV Tauri stars appear to be an extension of the Type II Cepheids to longer periods. A single period-luminosity-color relationship is seen to describe both the Type II Cepheids and the RV Tauri stars in the LMC.

Evolution of binary stars in the LMC with helium enrichment

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Recent surveys of supergiants stars in the LMC indicate that the post-main-sequence region of the colour-magnitude diagram is well populated, although numerical evolution of massive stars with normal surface hydrogen indicates to the contrary. Supergiant stars having surface enrichment of helium acquired for example from a previous phase of accretion from a binary companion, however, evolve in a way so that the evolved models and observed data are consistent. We compare the available data with computed evolutionary tracks of massive stars of metallicity relevant to the LMC with and without helium-enriched envelopes and conclude that a large fraction of supergiant stars may occur in binaries. Is the Short Distance Scale a Result of a Problem with the LMC Photometric Zero Point?

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

I present a promising route to harmonize distance measurements based on clump giants and RR Lyrae stars. This is achieved by comparing the brightness of these distance indicators in three environments: the solar neighborhood, Galactic bulge and Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). As a result of harmonizing the distance scales in the solar neighborhood and Baade's Window, I derive the new absolute magnitude of RR Lyrae stars, M{sub v}(RR) at [Fe/H] = -1.6 (0.59 {+-} 0.05, 0.70 {+-} 0.05). Being somewhat brighter than the statistical parallax solution, but fainter than typical results of the main sequence fitting to Hipparcos data, these values of M{sub V}(RR) favor intermediate or old ages of globular clusters. Harmonizing the distance scales in the LMC and Baade's Window, I show that the most likely distance modulus to the LMC, {mu}{sub LMC} is in the range 18.24 - 18.44. The Hubble constant ...

Microlens Parallax Measurements with a Warm Spitzer

CERN Document Server

Because Spitzer is an Earth-trailing orbit, losing about 0.1 AU/yr, it is excellently located to perform microlens parallax observations toward the Magellanic Clouds (LMC/SMC) and the Galactic bulge. These yield the so-called ``projected velocity'' of the lens, which can distinguish statistically among different populations. A few such measurements toward the LMC/SMC would reveal the nature of the lenses being detected in this direction (dark halo objects, or ordinary LMC/SMC stars). Cool Spitzer has already made one such measurement of a (rare) bright red-clump source, but warm (presumably less oversubscribed) Spitzer could devote the extra time required to obtain microlens parallaxes for the more common, but fainter, turnoff sources. Warm Spitzer could observe bulge microlenses for 38 days per year, which would permit up to 24 microlens parallaxes per year. This would yield interesting information on the disk mass ...

Radial velocities, dynamics of stars and nebulosities with GAIA and VLT-GIRAFFE

CERN Document Server

This document is divided in two parts. The first part deals with the radial velocities (RV) distributions for B-type stars and nebulosities observed with the VLT-GIRAFFE in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds towards the open clusters NGC2004 and NGC330. Thanks to the resolution of GIRAFFE spectra, we found that the RV distribution for the nebulosities in the LMC is bi-modal. This bi-modality can be interpreted, in term of dynamics, by the expansion of the LMC4 superbubble. The second part deals with the GAIA space mission and the determination of the radial velocities by using Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) spectra. The methods to determine the radial velocities are presented as well as preliminary results on simulated RVS spectra.

The Herschel revolution: unveiling the morphology of the high mass star formation sites N44 and N63 in the LMC

CERN Document Server

We study the structure of the medium surrounding sites of high-mass star formation to determine the interrelation between the HII regions and the environment from which they were formed. The density distribution of the surroundings is key in determining how the radiation of the newly formed stars interacts with the surrounds in a way that allows it to be used as a star formation tracer. We present new Herschel/SPIRE 250, 350 and 500 mum data of LHA 120-N44 and LHA 120-N63 in the LMC. We construct average spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for annuli centered on the IR bright part of the star formation sites. The annuli cover ~10-~100 pc. We use a phenomenological dust model to fit these SEDs to derive the dust column densities, characterise the incident radiation field and the abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules. We see a factor 5 decrease in the radiation field energy density as a function of radial distance around N63. N44 does not show a ...

The Star Clusters in the Irregular Galaxy NGC 4449

CERN Document Server

We examine the star clusters in the irregular galaxy NGC 4449. We use a near-infrared spectrum and broad-band images taken with the HST to place a limit of 8--15 Myrs on the age of the bright central ojbect in NGC 4449. Its luminosity and size suggest that it is comparable to young super star clusters. However, there is a peculiar nucleated-bar structure at the center of this star cluster, and we suggest that this structure is debris from the interaction that has produced the counter-rotating gas systems and extended gas streamers in the galaxy. From the images we identify 60 other candidate compact star clusters in NGC 4449. Fourteen of these could be background elliptical galaxies or old globular star clusters. Of the star clusters, three, in addition to the central object, are potentially super star clusters, and many others are comparable to the populous clusters found in the LMC. The star clusters span a large range in ages with no obvious peak in cluster ...

A Survey of Local Group Galaxies Currently Forming Stars: \\\\II. UBVRI Photometry of Stars in Seven Dwarfs

CERN Document Server

We have obtained UBVRI images with the Kitt Peak and Cerro Tololo 4-m telescopes and Mosaic cameras of seven dwarfs in (or near) the Local Group, all of which have known evidence of recent star formation: IC10, NGC 6822, WLM, Sextans B, Sextans A, Pegasus, and Phoenix. We construct color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of these systems, as well as neighboring regions that can be used to evaluate the degree of foreground contamination by stars in the Milky Way. Inter-comparison of these CMDs with those of M31, M33, the LMC, and the SMC permits us to determine improved reddening values for a typical OB star found within these galaxies. All of the CMDs reveal a strong or modest number of blue supergiants. All but Pegasus and Phoenix also show the clear presence of red supergiants in the CMD, although IC10 appears to be deficient in these objects given its large WR population. The bright stars of intermediate color in the CMD are badly contaminated by foreground stars ...

Cerium moment collapse in ternary silicides CePd_2_-_xMn_xSi_2 (0#<=#x#<=#2)

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Cerium L_3 XANES (x-ray-absorption near-edge-structure) spectra were analyzed to separate Ce moment contributions and mixed valence (MV) in complex magnetic silicides CePd_2_-_xMn_xSi_2 (0#<=#x#<=#2). The Ce valence mixing does not vary linearly with x, but increases rapidly for x#>=#1.5. The associated moment collapse correlates with pronounced deviations of the unit-cell volume from Vegard law and the onset of structural instability. Reorientation of [001] Mn 3d antiferromagnetic order for x<2 appears to rapidly suppress the weak Ce valence mixing coexisting with antiferromagnetic order in CeMn_2Si_2.

Algebraic structures and eigenstates for integrable collective field theories

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Conditions for the construction of polynomial eigen-operators for the Hamiltonian of collective string field theories are explored. Such eigen-operators arise for only one monomial potential v(x)=#mu#x"2 in the collective field theory. They form a w_#infinity#-algebra isomorphic to the algebra of vertex operators in 2d gravity. Polynomial potentials of orders only strictly larger or smaller than 2 have no non-zero-energy polynomial eigen-operators. This analysis leads us to consider a particular potential #nu#(x)=#mu#x"2+g/x"2. A Lie algebra of polynomial eigen-operators is then constructed for this potential. It is a symmetric 2-index Lie algebra, also represented as a subalgebra of U(sl(2)). (orig.).

Time-resolved Fourier transform emission spectroscopy of A2P-X2+ infrared transition of the CN radical

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

The A2P-X2+Dv=-3 bands of the 12C14N radical have been observed by time-resolved Fourier transform spectroscopy in the 1850-3100cm-1 region with a wavenumber resolution of 0.025cm-1. The radical was produced in a pulsed positive column discharge in a cyanogene and helium mixture. Seven bands of v=0-3, 1-4, 2-5, 3-6, 4-7, 5-8, and 6-9 were analyzed to give the molecular constants of each state by least-squares fitting of 801 lines. The pulsed discharge was found to be efficient for production of CN in the excited A2P state. The vibrational excitation temperature was determined to be 6680+-835K and 6757+-534K for the A2P and X2+ states, respectively. The population of the A2P was found to be 4% of that of the X2+ state in the time after turning off the discharge.

Theoretical study on the effects of oxygen doping on the lithium ion conductive perovskite-type manganese fluoride of KxBa(1-x)/2MnF3

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

Previously, we demonstrated that the lithium ion conduction in the perovskite-type manganese fluoride is attributed to counter cation-site vacancy mechanism. The divalent counter cation-doped KxBa(1-x)/2MnF3 was theoretically predicted as the lithium ion conductor in the perovskite-type manganese fluoride. In this study, we considered the oxygen doping for KxBa(1-x)/2MnF3 to realize the higher lithium ion conductivity. It is because lithium ion forms the stronger ionic bond with the doped oxygen anion. The hybrid-DFT calculations were performed to investigate the lithium ion conduction in the oxygen-doped KxBa(1-x)/2MnF3. The calculation results were discussed from the viewpoints of the potential energy curve, electron densities, and charge and spin densities. The effect of the lithium ion...

Heavy fermion behavior in Ce(Ni_xPd_1_-_x)_2Si_2

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility #chi#, specific heat C, and thermoelectric power S were carried out for the solid solution Ce(Ni_xPd_1_-_x)_2Si_2 (0#<=#x#<=#1). With increasing x, the ground state changes from an antiferromagnetic Kondo state (x<0.2) to an intermediate valence state (x>0.3). The heavy fermion state was found to evolve at the crossover concentration at x=0.2, where the long-range magnetic order seems to disappear. [copyright] 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Field-induced valence transition of Eu(Pd_1_-_xPt_x)_2Si_2

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The magnetic susceptibility and high-field magnetization have been measured for the intermediate valence system Eu(Pd_1_-_xPt_x)_2Si_2 with 0#<=#x#<=#0.15. A first-order valence transition is observed for all the compounds under high field of 100 T at low temperatures. This valence transition is of first order accompanied with a large hysteresis, which is in contrast to a continuous valence change against temperature. Based on the interconfigurational fluctuation (ICF) model, the temperature- and field-induced valence transitions are discussed. It is found that a first-order valence transition can be induced by magnetic field, even if the system shows a continuous valence transition against temperature. Metamagnetic behavior at finite temperatures is also understood qualitatively by the ICF model. copyright 1997 The American Physical Society.

Ab initio pseudopotential calculations of carbon impurities in Si

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Ab initio planewave pseudopotential method is used to study carbon diffusion and pairing in crystalline silicon. The calculation is performed with a 40 Ry planewave cutoff and 2x2x2 special k-point sampling with a supercell of 64 atoms. It is found that substitutional carbon attracts interstitial Si forming a <001> C interstitial with a large binding energy of 1.45 eV. The interstitial carbon is mobile and can migrate with a migration energy of 0.5 eV. The interstitial carbon can bind further to another substitutional carbon forming a substitutional carbon-interstitutional carbon pair with a binding energy of 1.0 eV. This model is used to understand the effect of high C concentration on the transient enhanced diffusion in Si.

The analysis of coupled heat and particle transport in Tokamaks by means of Fourier transform

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

A method to deduce the 2 x 2 transport matrix for coupled heat and particle transport in Tokamaks is proposed. The method applies to perturbative experiments, and is based on a Fourier transform of the measured signals of temperature and density. By analyzing different linear combinations of temperature and density, the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the transport matrix are determined. The method is tested for a number of illustrative cases using simulated data, and the sensitivity to noise on the signals is evaluated. (author).

The main compositions of iron-base amorphous self-fluxing alloy powders of 150 mesh, used in this work, are Fe, Cr, Ni, W, Mo, B, Si and C. The ranges of each element in at% are (65-70)Fe, (3-5)Cr, (2-4)Ni, (2-4)W, (1-2)Mo, (10-14)B, (4-7)Si and (2-3)C. The atomic ratio of metal-metalloid is about 80:20, so this alloy is abbreviated as M_8_0X_2_0. The material on which coatings were deposited is 1020 steel, austenitized for 1h at 880 C, water quenched, and tempered at 180 C for 1h. This heat treatment resulted in a low carbon martensite structure with a hardness of HRC35-45. After cleaning, shot blasting and preheating the steel to about 200 C, the authors sprayed a thin Ni-Al alloy layer of about 0.1--0.15mm in thickness onto the specimen by means of an oxygen-acetylene torch to provide better bonding of the coating with substrate. The effects of pressure on the electronic, transport and dynamical properties of AuX_2 (X = Al, Ga and In)

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The electronic band structure, transport properties, and lattice dynamics in AuX_2 (X = Al, Ga and In) under high pressure have been extensively studied with full potential linearized augmented plane wave and pseudopotential plane wave methods. The theoretical results for the electronic band structure and Fermi surface reveal pressure-induced electronic topological transitions (ETTs) in AuGa_2 and AuIn_2, while they are absent in AuAl_2, in excellent agreement with the experimental observations. Moreover, calculations of the transport properties at different pressures reveal subtle changes in the band structure close to the Fermi surface of the three intermetallic compounds. It is clear that the anomalies in transport properties are due to ETTs. Interestingly, a pressure-induced soft transverse acoustic (TA) phonon mode is identified only in AuGa_2. The TA phonon instability at the Brillouin zone boundary L point might be responsible for the ...

Effect of magnetic field and pressure on U(Ni_1_-_xPd_x)_2Si_2 single crystals

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Single crystals of U(Ni_1_-_xPd_x )_2Si_2 for x = 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15 have been grown. Magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements were performed in a wide range of temperatures, magnetic fields and high pressures in order to study stability of magnetic phases in the solid solutions between UNi_2Si_2 and UPd_2Si_2 with a special emphasis on the type of ground state. In UPd_2Si_2 the simple AFI-type antiferromagnetic structure of U moments is observed at low temperatures. UNi_2Si_2 adopts the uncompensated AF structure (UAF) with the ++- stacking of U moments along the c-axis and consequently this compound exhibits a spontaneous magnetization corresponding to 1/3 of the U moment. The substitution of Pd for Ni leads to a rapid decay of the spontaneous magnetization. The evolution of magnetization and electrical resistivity behavior with Pd doping is tentatively attributed to the coexistence of the AF-I and UAF phases in the ground state ...

Korrosionsverhalten von niedrig- und hochlegiertem sowie beschichtetem Stahl bei ungestoerter Langzeitauslagerung in natuerlichem Meerwasser

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The procedure for field corrosion tests in sea water is decribed in DIN 50 917, Part II. Distinction is made thereby between long-term undisturbed test specimens, which remain at the exposure site up to the time of sampling, and disturbed test specimens, which are cleaned at certain time intervals for intermediate examination and subsequently exposed again. The comparability of results obtained with the two different types of test was to be investigated at the Helgoland test installation. At an exposure period of up to four years, undisturbed specimens of unalloyed and low-alloy steel grades feature considerably lower corrosion losses than disturbed specimens. At a longer exposure period of up to seven years, the corrosion rate can increase substantially again with the exposure time. This can be attributed to sulphate reduction in the anaerobic zone under the top coating. An effect of the alloying elements is also possible. With good and adequately thick coating systems, no difference ...

The data show the modulation of the sulfur Auger spin polarization as a function of emission angle, which represents an observation of spin-polarized Auger-electron diffraction (SPAED), a potentially powerful tool for the study of local magnetic structure at surfaces, interfaces, and thin films. Theoretical modeling of the SPAED data indicates a large decrease in the magnetization of the top iron layer, suggesting a magnetic poisoning induced by the sulfur overlayer. These findings are independently supported by the observation of a large decrease of secondary electron spin polarization upon sulfur adsorption.

Development of a new #gamma#-ray detector for PEM applications

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The authors are developing a high specificity detector for detecting the increased metabolic rate of breast tumors. Positron emission mammography (PEM) provides a highly efficient, high spatial resolution positron imaging system. PMT plays a very important role in PEM detectors, because most of the systems consist of scintillator arrays coupled with PMT. Our detector is composed of 20 x 20 arrays of 2 mm x 2 mm x 20 mm of Bi_4Ge_3O_1_2 (BGO) scintillators and a novel flat panel position-sensitive PMT (FP-PS-PMT)-Hamamatsu R8400-00-M256. Spatial resolutions of 2.0 mm FWHW and energy resolutions of 23% FWHM are achieved. (authors)

Theoretical analysis of strain-induced shape changes in cubic precipitates during coarsening

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The work reported here concerns the evolution of the shape of a coherent, cubic precipitate as it grows by coarsening. The work was motivated by the need to explain recent experimental observations that show that cuboidal ..gamma.. Ni/sub 3/Al precipitates in Ni-Al alloys resist coarsening and decompose into doublets of parallel rectangular plates and octets of small cubes. The theoretical model assumes a precipitate of cubic phase with negative elastic anisotropy, and neglects any difference between the elastic constants of the precipitate and the matrix. The elastic energy of the precipitate is then calculated as a function of its morphology, including the possibility of decomposition into doublets or octets of discrete particles. The results show that a cuboidal precipitate with (100) faces and edge length, 2a, is metastable with respect to transition to a doublet of discrete plates, with dimensions a x 2a x ...

Luminescence and laser transition studies of Dy3+:K-Mg-Al fluorophosphate glasses

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Dysprosium ion doped fluorophosphate glasses with compositions of PKMAFDy: (56-x/2) P2O5+17K2O+8Al2O3+(15-x/2)MgO+4AlF3+xDy2O3 (x=0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 1.0 and 2.0 mol%) have been prepared by melt quenching technique and are characterized by optical absorption, emission spectra and fluorescence lifetime measurements. The observed bands in the absorption spectrum are analysed by using free-ion Hamiltonian (HFI) model. The Judd-Ofelt (JO) analysis has been performed and the intensity parameters (??, ?=2, 4, 6) have been evaluated that are used to predict radiative properties. From emission spectra, the effective bandwidth (??eff) and the stimulated emission cross-section (?(?p)) were evaluated. The fluorescence decay from the 4F9/2 level of Dy3+ ions have been measured by monitoring the intense 4F9/2#->#6H13/2 transition (573 nm). The lifetimes (?) are found to decrease with increasing concentration due to ...

Half-Heusler phase related structural perturbations near stoichiometric composition FeZnSb

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Half-Heusler phases XYZ (Pearson symbol cF12) are chemically versatile and rich in physical properties. The half-Heusler phase in the Fe-Zn-Sb ternary system was reported in the year 2000. In this work, two new ternary phases are identified in the vicinity of the equiatomic composition FeZnSb in the same system: Fe1-xZnSb (tetragonal, space group P4/nmm, Pearson symbol tP6-?, Z=2: a=4.1113(6) A, c=6.0127(12) A for x=0.08 (1), and a=4.1274(6) A, c=6.0068(12) A for x=0.12 (2)); and Fe7.87Zn6.72Sb8 (Fe0.98Zn0.84Sb) (3) (cubic, space group Fm-3m, Pearson symbol cF96-?, Z=4, a=11.690(13) A). 1 and 2 crystallize in the PbFCl-type structure, and 3 adopts a unique 2x2x2 supercell of a normal half-Heusler structure. The structures of both the tetragonal and cubic phases can be described as assemblies of half-Heusler structure related subunits. Corrosion of stainless steels in 20 to 75% nitric acid. Final report. Korrosion von Chrom-Nickel-(Molybdaen)-Staehlen in unterazeotroper und azeotroper Salpetersaeure. Schlussbericht

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

A series of stainless austenitic and ferritic materials was exposed for 100 days to boiling nitric acid which contained no corrosion products; the corrosion rates and depths of the grain boundary attack were observed. - Provided the structure is precipitation-free, the following are suitable for long-term exposure; the austenitic steels X 2 CrNi 19 11, X 1 CrNi 25 21, X 1 CrNiMoN 25 22 2 and X 1 NiCrMoCu 31 27 4, the practically Mo-free and Cu-free development steel X 1 NiCr 31 27, and the highly Mo-alloyed variant X 1 NiCrMoCu 31 27 5. - In the case of alloy NiCr21Mo it is advisable to limit the concentration and/or temperature of the nitric acid. - The 'superferrite' X 1 CrNiMoNb 28 4 2, the Japanese steel X 1 CrNiNb 30 2 and the austenitic steels X 2 CrNiMoN 17 13 3 and X 1 CrNiMoN 25 22 2 in the version with high nickel content are unsuitable. [Comparison of wound morphology following gunshots by machine guns and sub-machine guns].

Science.gov (United States)

Automatic weapons such as machine guns and submachine guns are found in the German-speaking region only in special army and police units and appear accordingly rarely in homicides, suicides and accidents. In the following, the findings in two cases of death with the use of machine and submachine guns are presented. The first case was a fatal accident during shooting on a training area (current machine gun of the German army, calibre 7.62 x 51 mm), the second case was a killing during a physical conflict (submachine gun MP 40 from World War II, calibre 9 x 19 mm). In the case with the machine gun autopsy disclosed typical entry holes corresponding to the calibre, but unusually large exit wounds with tissue bridges in the wound ground, measuring 4 x 2.5 cm in diameter. By contrast, the second case (submachine gun) showed "normal" entry and exit wounds. The differences are mainly caused by deviating ballistic data of the ammunition used. They are ...

Water-soluble cis-[(NHC)PdBr2(TPPTS)] catalysts and their applications in Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of aryl chlorides

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

New palladium(II) complexes (2), bearing NHC/TPPTS ligands, (NHC=benzimidazol-2-ylidene; TPPTS=triphenylphosphine-3,3',3''-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analyses and spectroscopic methods. Their ability to catalyze the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction in neat water has been studied at 100^oC. Very high activities have been observed in the coupling of phenylboronic acid with aryl chlorides in the presence of 1% of the catalyst. We have compared the electronic properties of cis-[PdBr2(NHC)(TPPTS)] with the related complexes, [PdX2(NHC)]2 and [trans-PdBr2(NHC)(pdca)] (pdca=pyridine-2,6-dicarboxyic acid) (3) via three different techniques: cyclic voltammetry, thermogravimetric analysis and ^1^3C NMR spectroscopy.

Variational approach to nuclear matter

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

We calculated the energies of asymmetric nuclear matter at zero and finite temperatures with the cluster variational method. At zero temperature, the expectation value of the two-body Hamiltonian composed of the kinetic energies and the AV18 two-body forces is calculated with the Jastrow wave function in the two-body cluster approximation. The obtained two-body energy is in good agreement with the result with the Fermi Hypernetted Chain (FHNC) calculation by Akmal et al. The energy caused by the UIX three-body forces is treated somewhat phenomenologically so that the total energy reproduces the empirical saturation point. Furthermore, the parameters included in the three-body energy are readjusted so that the Thomas-Fermi (TF) calculations with use of the obtained energy of nuclear matter reproduce the gross feature of the experimental data on atomic nuclei. The nuclear species in the neutron star crust obtained by the TF calculation are reasonable. The free energies of asymmetric ...

Theoretical approach to initial growth kinetics of GaN on GaN(001)

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

We carried out theoretical analyses based on ab initio calculations incorporates in which free energy of the vapor phase is incorporated in order to determine the initial growth kinetics of c-GaN on GaN(001)-(4x1). The feasibility of the theoretical approach had been confirmed by calculations of Ga adsorption-desorption transition temperature and transition beam equivalent pressures on the GaAs(001)-(4x2)b2 surface in our previous work [Y. Kangawa, T. Ito, A. Taguchi, K. Shiraishi, T. Ohachi, Surf. Sci. 493 (2001) 178]. The results of calculations suggest that no Ga adsorption occurs on the initial surface under typical growth conditions but that a Ga adsorption site appears after N adsorption on GaN(001)-(4x1). That is, in the initial growth stage of c-GaN on GaN(001)-(4x1), a N-adsorbed ...

The dust distribution in edge-on galaxies. Radiative transfer fits of V and K'-band images

CERN Document Server

Aims: I have analyzed a sample of seven nearby edge-on galaxies observed in the V and K'-band, in order to infer the properties of the dust distribution. Methods: A radiative transfer model, including scattering, have been used to decompose each image into a stellar disk, a bulge, and a dust disk. The parameters describing the distributions have been obtained through standard X^2 minimization techniques. Results: The dust disks fitted to the V-band images are consistent with previous work in literature: the radial scalelength of dust is larger than that for stars (h_d/h_s ~ 1.5); the dust disk has a smaller vertical scalelength than the stellar (z_d/z_s ~ 1/3); the dust disk is almost transparent when seen face-on (central, face-on, optical depth tau_0 =0.5-1.5). Faster radiative transfer models which neglect scattering can produce equivalent fits, with changes in the derived parameters within the accuracy of full fits including scattering. In ...

Probing gluon and heavy-quark nuclear PDFs with photon + heavy quark production in pA collisions

CERN Document Server

We present a detailed phenomenological study of direct photon production in association with a heavy-quark jet in pA collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at next-to-leading order in QCD. The dominant contribution to the cross-section comes from the gluon--heavy-quark (gQ) initiated subprocess, making \\gamma + Q production a process very sensitive to both the gluon and the heavy-quark parton distribution functions (PDFs). Additionally, the RHIC and LHC experiments are probing complementary kinematic regions in the momentum fraction x_2 carried by the target partons. Thus, the nuclear production ratio R^{\\gamma+Q}_{pA} can provide strong constraints, over a broad x-range, on the poorly determined nuclear parton distribution functions which are extremely important for the interpretation of results in heavy-ion collisions.

Plasma nitriding of stainless steels at low temperatures

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

To avoid the drop in corrosion resistance of stainless steels in conventional nitriding (precipitation of CrN), low-temperature techniques like ion implantation, plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII, PI{sup 3}) and low-temperature plasma nitriding were developed. In this investigation, four stainless-steel grades (ferritic: X6Cr17, austenitic-ferritic: X2CrNiMoN22.5.3, austenitic: X8CrNiTi18.10 and X5CrNi18.10) were plasma-nitrided between 250 and 500 C. Nitrogen-enriched layers with a high nitrogen content were produced, leading to a significant increase in surface hardness. X-ray diffraction indicated that CrN did not precipitate if treatment temperatures did not exceed 400 C. 'Expanded austenite' formed in the austenitic and duplex steels and {epsilon}-nitride (Fe{sub 2}N{sub 1-x}) in the ferritic steel. The optically visible structure of the nitrided cases is comparable with that of the PIII layers, with higher charging ...

Particle-hole strength excited in the /sup 40/Ca(p,n)/sup 40/Sc reaction at 134 MeV

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The /sup 40/Ca(p,n)/sup 40/Sc reaction was studied at 134 MeV. Neutron energy spectra were measured by the time-of-flight technique with resolutions of 220 keV at angles from 0"0 to 41"0 and 415 keV out to 62"0. The 2"-,3"-,4"-,5"- band of states based on the (f/sub 7/2/,d/sub 3/2//sup -1/) 1p1h structure was observed at low excitation energies, in good agreement with known analog states in /sup 40/Ca and /sup 40/K. The shapes of the cross-section and analyzing-power angular distributions are in good agreement with distorted-wave impulse-approximation calculations using simple 1p1h (Tamm-Dancoff approximation) shell-model wave functions. A relatively strong transition to a state at E/sub x/ = 2.3 MeV with L = 3 is identified tentatively as a 4"- state with the predominant 1p1h structure (1f/sub 7/2/,2s/sub 1/2//sup -1/).

On the origin of the unconventional two-hole bound state in the t-J model

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

We present a description of the ground state and low-lying excited states of two holes in the 4x4 cluster t-J model in terms of a simple model for the motion of a single bipolaron. The existence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations has been assumed. According to the suggested scenario, the formation of the bipolaron is mediated by the reduction of the magnetic energy in the case of two holes occupying nearest neighbor sites. The relevant part of the Hilbert space consists of wave functions corresponding to holes oscillating around pairs of nearest neighbor sites and trapped in a potential well due to strings of spin defects. Virtual processes which connect these states involve both the kinetic term and the transverse part of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Many properties of energy level schemes obtained by numerical diagonalizations such as the sequence of the lowest states for each irreducible representation of the k vector point groups can be reproduced satisfactorily. Neutron diffraction and magnetization studies of pseudoternary HoRh_2_-_xPd_xSi_2 solid solutions (0#<=#x<2)

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Neutron powder diffraction and magnetometric studies of the HoRh_2_-_xPd_xSi_2 series of solid solutions (x=0, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, 1.8) are reported. The intermetallics investigated crystallize in the body-centred-tetragonal ThCr_2Si_2-type structure (space group I4/mmm). All the samples order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. For low values of the dilution parameter x a simple collinear antiferromagnetic structure of the AFI type is stable. Below T_N the magnetic moments are parallel to the c-axis and then, below T_t, deflect forming an angle #psi# with the c-axis. Further replacement of Rh by Pd results in the development of a sine-wave-modulated magnetic structure with one two-component propagation vector and magnetic moments in the basal plane. For x=1.8 a sine-wave-modulated structure similar to that reported for HoPd_2Si_2 (i.e. with a two-component propagation vector and magnetic moments parallel to the b-axis) was found. (author)

Piezoelectric ceramics for acoustic applications have been prepared by mixing the piezoelectric phase Pb{sub 1-1.5x}La{sub x}{open_square}{sub x/2}(Ti{sub 1-y}Zr{sub y})O{sub 3} (PLZT) with variable fractions of Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}. After thermal treatment, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy have been used to determine the phase and morphological modifications. The morphotropic PLZT initial phase disproportionates into modified PLZT and ZrO{sub 2} phases. Using electrical impedance spectroscopy, the resonance frequencies of the composite system have been determined and analyzed. As the Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} volume fractions increase, the resonance frequency and the amplitude of the electrical response both decrease. Heavy metals in Semarang`s urban streams: Spatial distribution and bioindication using the guppy (Lepistes reticulatus)

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

A field survey on cadmium, lead, copper, and zinc was performed in Semarang, the fifth largest city in Indonesia. Water, sediment, and fish samples were collected from 101 grids of 2 x 2 km. The objectives of the study were (1) to identify the spatial distribution of metals in the sediments of the greater Semarang area, (2) to estimate the background concentrations of the metals present in Semarang, (3) to provide a simple tool for deriving standards for metals in the sediment, and (4) to explore the potential use of the guppy (Lebistes reticulatus) as a bioindicator of urban metal pollution. To map the spatial distribution of the metals, concentrations of each metal in sediment were plotted against the corresponding city coordinate. On the basis of these plots, background concentrations of the metals were estimated. A combined pollution index can be derived thereafter by calculating the difference between metals concentrations from a ...

Fabrication and characterization of Cu/YSZ cermet high temperature electrolysis cathode material prepared by high-energy ball-milling method

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Cu/YSZ cermet (40 and 60 vol.% Cu powder with balance YSZ) is a more economical cathode material than the conventional Ni/YSZ cermet for high temperature electrolysis (HTE) of water vapor and it was successfully fabricated by high-energy ball-milling of Cu and YSZ powders, pressing into pellets (o 13 mm x 2 mm) and subsequent sintering process at 700 deg. C under flowing 5%-H{sub 2}/Ar gas. The Cu/YSZ composite material thus fabricated was characterized using various analytical tools such as XRD, SEM, and laser diffraction and scattering method. Electrical conductivity of sintered Cu/YSZ cermet pellets thus fabricated was measured by using 4-probe technique for comparison with that of conventional Ni/YSZ cermets. The effect of composite composition on the electrical conductivity was investigated and a marked increase in electrical conductivity for copper contents greater than 40 vol.% in the composite was explained by percolation threshold. ...

Evolution of magnetic structures in the UNi_2Si_2-UPd_2Si_2 system

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The influence of Pd-Ni substitution on the formation of magnetic phases in the tetragonal U(Ni_1_-_x, Pd_x)_2Si_2 system and the concentration magnetic phase diagram are presented. A series of different substitutions was prepared and detailed studies by powder neutron diffraction were performed for x=0.25, 0.5 and 0.75. All compounds order antiferromagnetically and form ferromagnetic basal planes stacked along the c axis (q=(0,0,q_z) propagation). The ground-state phase (AF3) of UNi_2Si_2 is an uncompensated AF structure (++- stacking (q_z=2/3)). In UPd_2Si_2 the ground-state phase corresponds to the simple AF structure AF2 (+-+-(q_z=1)). In solid solutions, no traces of the AF3 phase were found for x=0.25 and the ground-state powder patterns correspond to AF2 for x#>=#0.25. (orig.)

EPR and FT-IR spectroscopic studies of Bi2O3-B2O3-CuO glasses

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

EPR and FT-IR absorption measurements have been performed for xCuO.(100-x)[2Bi2O3.B2O3] glass system, with 0?x?50 mol%. The mode in which the addition of the copper ions influences the structure of 2Bi2O3.B2O3 glass matrix was analyzed. The EPR absorption spectra revealed the presence in the glass structure of Cu2+ ions in axially distorted octahedral environments. EPR data pointed out the simultaneous presence of Cu2+ and Cu+ ionic species in the glasses with x?5 mol%. For x>10 mol%, the Cu2+ ions participate in the superexchange magnetic interactions, which increase with CuO content. The FT-IR spectra showed the presence of some bands that are assigned to vibrations of Bi-O bonds from BiO3 pyramidal and BiO6 octahedral units and B-O bonds from BO3 and BO4 units. The data obtained by these measurements reveal the structural changes in the 2Bi2O3.B2O3 glass matrix by controlled doping of CuO.

This paper studies networks where all nodes are distributed on a unit square $A\\triangleq[(-1/2,1/2)^{2}$ following a Poisson distribution with known density $\\rho$ and a pair of nodes separated by an Euclidean distance $x$ are directly connected with probability $g(\\frac{x}{r_{\\rho}})$, independent of the event that any other pair of nodes are directly connected. Here $g:[0,\\infty)\\rightarrow[0,1]$ satisfies the conditions of rotational invariance, non-increasing monotonicity, integral boundedness and $g(x)=o(\\frac{1}{x^{2}\\log^{2}x})$; further, $r_{\\rho}=\\sqrt{\\frac{\\log\\rho+b}{C\\rho}}$ where $C=\\int_{\\Re^{2}}g(\\Vert \\boldsymbol{x}\\Vert)d\\boldsymbol{x}$ and $b$ is a constant. Comparison of LaBr_3:Ce and NaI(Tl) Scintillators for Radio-Isotope Identification Devices

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Lanthanum halide (LaBr_3:Ce) scintillators offer significantly better resolution (< 3% at 662 keV) relative to NaI(Tl) and have recently become commercially available in sizes large enough for the handheld, Radio-Isotope Identification Device (RIID) market. Drawbacks to lanthanum halide detectors, however, include internal radioactivity contributing to spectral counts, and a low-energy response which can cause detector resolution to be worse than that of NaI(Tl) below 100 keV. To study the potential of this new material for RIIDs we performed a series of measurements comparing a 1.5 x 1.5-inch LaBr_3:Ce detector with an Exploranium GR-135 RIID, which contains a 1.5 x 2.2-inch NaI(Tl) detector. Measurements were taken for short timeframes, as typifies RIID usage. Measurements included examples of naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM), typically found in cargo, and special nuclear materials. Some measurements were non-contact, ...

Anode Front-End Electronics for the Cathode Strip Chambers of the CMS Endcap Muon Detector

CERN Document Server

The front-end electronics system for the anode signals of the CMS Endcap Muon cathode strip chambers has about 183000 channels. The purposes of the anode front-end electronics are to acquire precise muon timing information for bunch crossing number identification at the Level-1 muon trigger system and to provide a coarse radial position of the muon track. Each anode channel consists of an input protection network, amplifier, shaper, constant-fraction discriminator, and a programmable delay. The essential parts of the electronics include a 16-channel amplifier-shaper-discriminator ASIC CMP16 and a 16-channel ASIC D16G providing programmable time delay. The ASIC CMP16 was optimized for the large cathode chamber size (up to 3 x 2.5 m2) and for the large input capacitance (up to 200 pf). The ASIC combines low power consumption (30 mW/channel) with good time resolution (2 - 3 ns). The del ay ASIC D16G makes possible the alignment of signals with an ...

In this paper, we report the detailed analysis of X-ray and infrared observations of the transient and its surroundings. Chandra bservations detect the source at a flux of F_X = 2e-12 erg cm^-2 s^-1 (2-8 keV). After accounting for absorption both in the interstellar medium and in material local to the source, the implied luminosity of the source is only L_X = 4e34 erg/s (2-8 keV; D=8 kpc). However, the diffuse X-ray emission near the source also brightened by a factor of 2. The enhanced diffuse X-ray emission lies on top of a known ridge of dust and ionized gas that is visible infrared images. We interpret the X-ray emission as scattered flux from the outburst, and determine that the peak luminosity of CXOGC J174540.0-290031 was >2e36 erg/s. We suggest that the ...

Characterisation of thin films on rough steel substrates by FTIR microscopy and imaging

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Complete text of publication follows. According to the new European regulations (Restrictions of Hazardous Substance Directive), there is an emerging demand for environmental friendly metal treatments instead on formerly used chromate conversion coating technique. The aim of the present investigations was to characterise and compare silicon containing protective thin layers on roughened galvanized steel surfaces (with average roughness of 0.7 microns), using FTIR microscopy and imaging techniques. The silicon containing coatings were produced either by Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) or by wet chemical treatment using liquid silane. FTIR techniques offer new possibilities in the characterisations and chemical mapping of differently coated thin films, besides SEM+EDS, AFM, nanoindentation, XPS measurements (P. Nemeth et al., Materials Science Forum, 589 (2008) 433-438). All measurements were carried out by a Varian FTS-7000 spectrometer with a 'Stingray' microscope configuration ...

The ternary system cerium-palladium-silicon

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Phase relations in the ternary system Ce-Pd-Si have been established for the isothermal section at 800 deg. C based on X-ray powder diffraction and EMPA techniques on about 130 alloys, which were prepared by arc-melting under argon or powder reaction sintering. Eighteen ternary compounds have been observed to participate in the phase equilibria at 800 deg. C. Atom order was determined by direct methods from X-ray single-crystal counter data for the crystal structures of #tau#_8-Ce_3Pd_4Si_4 (U_3Ni_4Si_4-type, Immm; a=0.41618(1), b=0.42640(1), c=2.45744(7) nm), #tau#_1_6-Ce_2Pd_1_4Si (own structure type, P4/nmm; a=0.88832(2), c=0.69600(2) nm) and also for #tau#_1_8-CePd_1_-_xSi_x (x=0.07; FeB-type, Pnma; a=0.74422(5), b=0.45548(3), c=0.58569(4) nm). Rietveld refinements established the atom arrangement in the structures of #tau#_5-Ce_3PdSi_3 (Ba_3Al_2Ge_2-type, Immm; a=0.41207(1), b=0.43026(1), c=1.84069(4) nm) and #tau#_1_3-Ce_3_-_xPd_2_0_+_xSi_6 (0#<=#x#<=#1, Co_2_0Al_3B_6-type, ...

Crystal and electronic structures, luminescence properties of Eu2+-doped Si6-zAlzOzN8-z and MySi6-zAlz-yOz+yN8-z-y (M=2Li, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba)

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The crystal structure, electronic structure, and photoluminescence properties of EuxSi6-zAlz-xOz+xN8-z-x (x=0-0.1, 0xMySi6-zAlz-x-yOz+x+yN8-z-x-y (M=2Li, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) have been studied. Single-phase EuxSi6-zAlz-xOz+xN8-z-x can be obtained in very narrow ranges of x?0.06 (z=0.15) and z2+ ions can be incorporated into nitrogen-rich Si6-zAlzOzN8-z. The Eu2+ ion is found to occupy the 2b site in a hexagonal unit cell (P63/m) and directly connected by six adjacent nitrogen/oxygen atoms ranging 2.4850-2.5089 A. The calculated host band gaps by the relativistic DV-X? method are about 5.55 and 5.45 eV (without Eu2+ 4f5d levels) for x=0 and 0.013 in EuxSi6-zAlz-xOz+xN8-z-x (z=0.15), in which the top of the 5d orbitals overlap with the Si-3s3p and N-2p orbitals within the bottom of the conduction band of the host. EuxSi6-zAlz-xOz+xN8-z-x shows a strong green emission with a broad Eu2+ band centered at about 530 nm under UV to near-UV excitation range. The excitation and emission spectra are ...

Teachers' Perception and Perceived Contributions towards the Success of the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Programme

Science.gov (United States)

Grassroots education is imperative if economic development is to be actualized. Therefore, it becomes necessary to study the primary school teachers' perception of the Universal Basic Education (UBE). This study attempted to find out the primary school teachers' perception of the Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme and their perceived contribution towards the success of the programme. It further examined how favorable perception towards the scheme could be a catalyst in the successful implementation of the UBE. To accomplish this task, two research questions and a hypothesis were raised to guide the study. The opinion of one hundred and eighteen (118) teachers, out of four hundred and forty-seven teachers (447) that constituted the population of the teachers in Esan West Public Primary Schools was obtained. The respondents were randomly selected. The questionnaire was used for data collection. A 1-4 Likert-type scale ranging from Strongly Agreed to Strongly Disagreed was used to ...

Structure properties and magnetic susceptibility of diluted magnetic semiconductor Y_2_-_xHo_xO_3

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The polycrystalline samples of Y_2_-_xHo_xO_3 (0.10#<=#x#<=#1.80) were synthesized by ceramic technology. The X-ray powder diffraction data were collected and the crystal structures were refined by the Rietveld method for the samples Y_2_-_xHo_xO_3 (x=0.00, 0.20, 0.40, 1.20, 1.80, 2.00). Holmium ions Ho"3"+ were randomly distributed over two cationic sites 8b and 24d in the space group Ia3 in all refined structures. Cation-anion-cation bonds important for superexchange interaction were determined. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were done by the Faraday method in the temperature range 290 to 620 K and a behaviour in accordance with the Curie-Weiss law was obtained. The molar Curie's constants linearly depend on concentration. The effective magnetic moments of Ho"3"+ ions were smaller than the free ion value. The Curie-Weiss paramagnetic temperatures indicated antiferromagnetic interaction. The gram ion susceptibilities confirmed the random distribution of Ho"3"+ ions over ...

Structure and magnetic properties of the UNi_1_0_-_xFe_xSi_2 system and "2"9Si nuclear magnetic resonance in UNi_1_0Si_2

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Structure and magnetic properties of UNi_1_0_-_xFe_xSi_2 intermetallics and "2"9Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in UNi_1_0Si_2 are investigated in a wide temperature range. Solid solutions in the exactly single-phase tetragonal form, ThMn_1_2 type, exist for x<2. The Ni and Fe atoms occupy the 8(f), 8(i) and 8(j) positions statistically, whereas the U atoms occupy the 2(a) and the Si atoms the 8(j) sites. The lattice parameters roughly follow Vegard's law. The magnetic susceptibility does not exhibit Curie-Weiss behaviour and, at about 630 K, an anomaly in the temperature dependence is observed. At low temperature, other anomalies are observed at 32 K and 45 K, for x=0.5 and 1.0 respectively. These low temperature anomalies are probably connected with magnetic ordering of a ferromagnetic character, whereas that at 630 K might result from the superparamagnetic state of Ni. Two "2"9Si NMR lines in UNi"1"0Si"2 were observed with the Knight ...

Soybean biodiesel consumption in agricultural tractor submitted the two forces in the traction bar; Consumo de biodiesel de soja em trator agricola submetido a duas forcas na barra de tracao

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Due to the great development occurred in the world after the Second World War and the establishment of patterns of increasingly intense, the energy demand amounted to the point, putting at risk the non-renewable energy sources such as oil, coal minerals, among others, with growing interest in renewable energies, among which the biodiesel has been detached. In this sense, the present work had for objective to evaluate the fuel consumption of a tractor Valtra BM100 4x2 TDA, running with ethyl biodiesel from soybean filtered in seven mixture proportions mixed with the diesel, subject to two forces in the traction bar. The work was conducted in the Department of Rural Engineering of the Paulista State University (UNESP), Jaboticabal Campus, in an entirely randomized designed, in a factorial diagram 2 x 7, with three repetitions. The treatments were a combination for two forces in the traction bar (10 and 22 kN) and seven mixture proportions (B{sub ...

Semiconductor-metal transition of pyrite FeS_2 under high pressure by full-potential linearized-augmented plane wave calculations

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The effects of hydrostatic pressure on the electronic band structure of the semiconductor mineral iron pyrite FeS_2 have been investigated theoretically by an ab initio full-potential linearized-augmented plane wave (FPLAPW) method within a local approximation (LDA/GGA) to the density functional theory. The calculations predict that at a pressure of 94.1 GPa the indirect band gap of pyrite FeS_2 vanishes and the material becomes a metal. This is due to the presence of the S-S and Fe-S bonds, which provide novel energy band distortions in the process of attaining the metallic state. Analysis indicates that, under increasing high pressure, the conduction bands (3p_z of sulfur and 3d_x_"2_-_y_"2+3d_x_y of iron) intrude downwards into the valence bands, which are predominantly 3d in nature. At normal pressure, the lattice constant, the bulk modulus, sulfur position parameter u, S-S bond length, and the indirect band gap of pyrite FeS_2 are ...

Monte Carlo evaluation of the AAA treatment planning algorithm in a heterogeneous multilayer phantom and IMRT clinical treatments for an Elekta SL25 linear accelerator

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The Anisotropic Analytical Algorithm (AAA) is a new pencil beam convolution/superposition algorithm proposed by Varian for photon dose calculations. The configuration of AAA depends on linear accelerator design and specifications. The purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy of AAA for an Elekta SL25 linear accelerator for small fields and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) treatments in inhomogeneous media. The accuracy of AAA was evaluated in two studies. First, AAA was compared both with Monte Carlo (MC) and the measurements in an inhomogeneous phantom simulating lung equivalent tissues and bone ribs. The algorithm was tested under lateral electronic disequilibrium conditions, using small fields (2x2 cm"2). Good agreement was generally achieved for depth dose and profiles, with deviations generally below 3% in lung inhomogeneities and below 5% at interfaces. However, the effects of attenuation and scattering close to ...

Microbiologically influenced corrosion of carbon and stainless steel pipes; Mikrobiologisch beeinflusste Korrosion an Rohrleitungen aus unlegierten und hochlegierten nichtrostenden Staehlen

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

About ten years ago microbiologically influenced corrosion manifested on stainless steel pipes used with river water for cooling a chemical plant. The pipe material was similar to Type 316 L. After only six weeks of operation pinhole leaks occurred nearly simultaneously at several welded joints of the pipe. The material degradation was simulated in laboratory and field corrosion tests. Microbiologically influenced corrosion failures also appeared on the pipes of a tubular heat exchanger of duplex steel Type 31803 and on carbon and stainless steel pipes in industrial waste water purification plants after these plants had been modernized with a biological purification unit. The basics of microbiologically influenced corrosion phenomena and typical corrosion failures of pipes will be described. (orig.) Field investigation of radio network usage at the dismounted infantry section level

Science.gov (United States)

The Soldier Information Requirements Technology Demonstration (SIREQ TD) project is an experimentation program to identify technologies that significantly enhance the performance of our future soldiers. One of the study series involved a 2 x 2 factorial comparison of the benefits of digital maps over paper maps, and the use of radios vs. no radios. Thirty-two Canadian regular force infantry soldiers performed force-on-force tactical assault missions in wooded terrain, with each soldier participating in all four test conditions. The radios were configured to operate in 4 subnets: 1 channel for each of the 2 Assault Groups (4 soldiers on a channel); a Section Commander/2IC channel; and an all-users channel. Note that in the no-radio conditions soldiers still operated the press-to-talk switch to allow recording of communications, but the speaker volume was set to zero. All communications were date/time stamped, identified as to the user and ...

Endovenous radiofrequency ablation using stent-type electrode for varicose veins: an experimental study in goats

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility and the optimal conditions of radiofrequency (RF) ablation by using the stent-type electrode upon the saphenous vein of goats for the endovenous treatment of varicose veins. A self-expandable nitinol stent electrode (6 mm diameter, 2 cm length, cell size; 1.3 x 2 mm) was designed to expose the distal 1 cm segment to allow for contact with the venous wall. The proximal part of the electrode was connected to the RF generator by insulated copper wires located within the stent electrode introducer. Initially, to optimize the power setting, ablation of 6 saphenous veins in 3 goats was performed with power settings of 10, 20 and 30 W. Pull back rate of the electrode was 2 and 4 cm/min for each power level, respectively. The goats were sacrificed 4-6 weeks later and histologic examinations of the saphenous veins were done. For the second part of the experiment, RF ablation of 4 saphenous ...

Electronic instabilities and the martensitic transition in A-15 compounds

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The structural transition and anomalous properties of the high temperature A-15 superconductors have been investigated from two different standpoints. The first is a Landau theory based on Gorkov's physical model of a Peierls-like charge density wave (CDW) transition involving electronic CDW order parameters coupled to phonon coordinates. Pretransition elastic anomalies, softening of the [1 anti 10] transverse ([1 anti 10] polarized) phonon, sublattice distortions, variation of transition temperature with stress and alloying and other effects have been accurately predicted, and a detailed comparison is made with experimental results. Central peaks in neutron scattering are shown to be non-dynamic in nature and no pretransition forbidden (300) reflection is predicted. The GAMMA_1_2 optic mode does not go soft at the transition, though its frequency is expected to be temperature dependent right up to room temperature. A tight binding, two (3-D) band model of the A-15 compounds, using ...

EPR and FT-IR spectroscopic studies of Bi{sub 2}O{sub 3}-B{sub 2}O{sub 3}-CuO glasses

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

EPR and FT-IR absorption measurements have been performed for xCuO.(100-x)[2Bi{sub 2}O{sub 3}.B{sub 2}O{sub 3}] glass system, with 0{<=}x{<=}50 mol%. The mode in which the addition of the copper ions influences the structure of 2Bi{sub 2}O{sub 3}.B{sub 2}O{sub 3} glass matrix was analyzed. The EPR absorption spectra revealed the presence in the glass structure of Cu{sup 2+} ions in axially distorted octahedral environments. EPR data pointed out the simultaneous presence of Cu{sup 2+} and Cu{sup +} ionic species in the glasses with x{>=}5 mol%. For x>10 mol%, the Cu{sup 2+} ions participate in the superexchange magnetic interactions, which increase with CuO content. The FT-IR spectra showed the presence of some bands that are assigned to vibrations of Bi-O bonds from BiO{sub 3} pyramidal and BiO{sub 6} octahedral units and B-O bonds from BO{sub 3} and BO{sub 4} units. Brain SPECT of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS): SPM analysis of two age groups

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Full text: Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a complex disorder characterised by profound fatigue and neuropsychiatric dysfunction. Previous studies with cerebral perfusion SPECT (rCBF) scans were performed with inhomogeneous patient populations and were not analysed with Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM). We have used SPM to study subjects with moderate CFS based on the Fukuda criteria, who were not on medication and not depressed, compared to age matched control subjects. An apparent bimodal age distribution has been observed in CFS. Subjects were therefore divided into two age groups: 16-35 or under 35 (17 CFS, 11 control) and 36-61 or over 35 (15 CFS, 15 control). HMPAO brain SPECT was acquired on a 3-head camera. After lower window scatter subtraction, reconstruction with attenuation correction (mu=0.15/cm) and editing of facial activity, scans were spatially normalised (affine + 2x3x2 nonlinear) to SPM's anatomical space. Accuracy of the convolution/superposition dose calculation algorithm at the condition of electron disequilibrium

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Using Monte Carlo simulation and the convolution/superposition algorithm, this work examines percent depth dose curves of the central axis in an acrylic phantom (20x20x20 cm"3) with variously sized air cavities (20x20x1.0, 20x20x2.0, 20x20x3.0, 20x20x4.0 and 20x20x4.95 cm"3 for study of longitudinal electron disequilibrium (ED) and 3.6x3.6x4.95, 4.5x4.5x4.95, 5.4x5.4x4.95 and 20x20x4.95 cm"3 for study of lateral ED). Radiochromic film samples are also measured to verify the Monte Carlo results. The Monte Carlo simulation is performed using OMEGA/BEAM and DOSXYZ codes, and the convolution/superposition calculation relies on an ADAC commercial treatment planning system. Underestimating the dose kernel expansion leads to overestimating the dose of what was found in the air cavity of ED using the convolution/superposition algorithm. Consequently, the dose in the rebuild-up region is influenced. The influenced region is on the acrylic phantom ...

A high-power millimeter-wave sheet beam free-electron laser amplifier

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The results of experiments with a short period (9.6 mm) wiggler sheet electron beam (1.0 mm x 2.0 cm) millimeter-wave free electron laser (FEL) amplifier are presented. This FEL amplifier utilized a strong wiggler field for sheet beam confinement in the narrow beam dimension and an offset-pole side-focusing technique for the wide dimension beam confinement. The beam analysis herein includes finite emittance and space-charge effects. High-current beam propagation was achieved as a result of extensive analytical studies and experimental optimization. A design optimization resulted in a low sensitivity to structure errors and beam velocity spread, as well as a low required beam energy. A maximum gain of 24 dB was achieved with a 1-kW injected signal power at 86 GHz, a 450-kV beam voltage, 17-A beam current, 3.8-kG wiggler magnetic field, and a 74-period wiggler length. The maximum gain with a one-watt injected millimeter-wave power was observed to ...

On the Resolving Power of a Single Exact-Repeat Altimetric Satellite or a Coordinated Constellation of Satellites

Science.gov (United States)

It is proved that the mid-point grid, which is composed of samples obtained at ground track locations midway between crossover points (thus a subset of the full sampling), has the same resolving power as the full set; i.e., they resolve the same three-dimensional spectral space. The resolving power of the mid-point grid as derived previously by Tai (1995, 1998) is characterized by the Nyquist frequency ? c=? /T (where T is the repeat period of the exact-repeat satellite), and by (in local Cartesian coordinates) the zonal and meridional Nyquist wavenumber kc=2? /X and lc=2? /Y respectively (where X and Y are the east-west and north-south separation between adjacent parallel ground tracks). Here we re-derive this result in simplified terms. First, it is shown through the sampling theorem as demonstrated previously by Tai (1999) that even though samples of the real mid-point grid are not taken simultaneously, they resolve the same frequency range as that of a hypothetical mid-point grid, ...

Schlussbericht

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

For evaporation crystallization of extremely corrosive FGD scrubber solutions which - depending on the process - can lead all the way to a product suitable for depositing, an economic equipment concept based on metallic construction materials was to be investigated. In a parameter study, electrochemical test methods were used to determine the influence of the pH value, the Fe{sup 3+}, F and So{sub 2} contents in a solution containing 200 g/l CaCl{sub 2}+30 g/l NaCl at 80deg C on the resistance to pitting corrosion of stainless steels and NiCrMo alloys. In addition, electrochemical and wet corrosion tests (e.g. crevice corrosion) were conducted using original FGD scrubber solutions with 43-50% dry substance from the power plants Reuter-West, Oberhavel and Rudow of the BEWAG, Berlin. The results were compared to those of standardized and non-standardized short-term tests for determining the critical pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion temperatures for the various materials. One-electron reduction of the square-planar nickel precursor (PNP)NiCl ( 1) (PNP (-) = N[2-P(CHMe 2) 2-4-methylphenyl] 2) with KC 8 effects ligand reorganization of the pincer ligand to assemble a Ni(I) dimer, [Ni(mu 2-PNP)] 2 ( 2), containing a Ni 2N 2 core structure, as inferred by its solid-state X-ray structure. Solution magnetization measurements are consistent with a paramagnetic Ni(I) system likely undergoing a monomer dimer equilibrium. The room-temperature and 4 K solid-state X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra display anisotropic signals. Low-temperature solid-state X-band EPR data at 4 K reveal rhombic values g z = 1.980(4), g x = 2. 380(4), and g y = 2.225(4), as well as a forbidden signal at g = 4.24 for the Delta M S = 2 half field transition, in accord with 2 having two weakly interacting metal centers. Large eddy simulation based fire modeling applications for Indian nuclear power plant

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Full text of publication follows: The Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) are always designed for the highest level of safety against postulated accidents which may be initiated due to internal or external causes. One of the external/internal causes, which may lead to accident in the reactor and its associated systems, is fire in certain vital areas of the plant. Conventionally, the fire containment approach and/or the fire confinement approach is used in designing the fire protection systems of NPPs. Indian NPPs (PHWRs) follow the combined approach to ensure plant safety and all newly designed plants are required to comply with the provisions of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) fire safety Guide. In respect of older plants, the reassessment of adequacy of fire safety provisions in the light of current advances has becomes essential so as to decide upon the steps for retrofitting. Keeping this in mind the deterministic fire hazard analysis was carried out for the Madras Atomic Power ...

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and the Department of Energy-National Energy Technologies Laboratory (DOE-NETL) are evaluating and demonstrating integration of terrestrial carbon sequestration techniques at a coal-fired electric power plant through the use of Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) system gypsum as a soil amendment and mulch, and coal fly ash pond process water for periodic irrigation. From January to March 2002, the Project Team initiated the construction of a 40 ha Carbon Capture and Water Emissions Treatment System (CCWESTRS) near TVA's Paradise Fossil Plant on marginally reclaimed surface coal mine lands in Kentucky. The CCWESTRS is growing commercial grade trees and cover crops and is expected to sequester 1.5-2.0 MT/ha carbon per year over a 20-year period. The concept could be used to meet a portion of the timber industry's needs while simultaneously sequestering carbon in lands which would otherwise ...
