Energy-band-structure studies of NbN(100) and VN(100)

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Band-structure studies of NbN and VN are reported. The results of angle-resolved photoemission experiments performed on NbN/sub 0.93/ and VN/sub 0.89/ are presented. The bulk-band structures calculated for stoichiometric NbN and VN using the linearized augmented-plane-wave method are presented and utilized in the interpretation of the experimental spectra. It is shown that most of the features in the spectra can be accounted for by direct bulk-band transitions. A fairly good agreement between experimental and calculated band locations and dispersions is obtained.

Sampling and Analysis at the Vortec Vitrification Facility in Paducah, Kentucky. Semiannual report, November 1, 1996--March 31, 1997

Science.gov (United States)

The Vortec Cyclone Melting System (CMS) facility; to be located at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, is designed to treat soil contaminated with low levels of heavy metals and radioactive elements, as well as organic waste. The primary components of Vortec`s CMS are a counter rotating vortex (CRV) reactor and cyclone melter. In the CMS process, granular glass forming ingredients and other feedstocks are introduced into the CRV reactor where the intense CRV mixing allows the mixture to achieve a stable reaction and rapid heating of the feedstock materials. Organic contaminants in the feedstock are effectively oxidized, and the inert inorganic solids are melted. The University of North Dakota Energy {ampersand} Environmental Research Center (EERC) has been contacted to help in the development of sampling plans and to conduct the sampling at the facility. This document is written in a format ...

Limit cycle's uniqueness for second order O.D.E.'s polynomial in $\\dot x$

CERN Document Server

We prove a uniqueness result for limit cycles of the second order ODE $\\ddot x + \\sum_{j=1}^{J}f_{j}(x)\\dot x^{j} + g(x) = 0$. We extend a uniqueness result proved in \\cite{CRV}. The main tool applied is an extension of Massera theorem proved in \\cite{GS}.

Ion nitriding; Proceedings of the International Conference, Cleveland, OH, Sept. 15-17, 1986

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The present conference discusses plasma-assisted surface coating/modification processes, the applications to date of ion nitriding, the effects of nitrogen on metal surfaces, ion nitriding mechanisms in Cr, Al and Cr + Al-containing 1040 steel, ion nitriding of Al and its alloys, life enhancement for forging dies, novel anode plasma nitriding developments, and a comparative study of the pulsed and dc ion-nitriding behavior in specimens with blind holes. Also discussed are the influence of heating method on ion nitriding, surface hardening of marage steels by ion nitriding without core hardness reduction, plasma nitriding of nodular cast iron sput gears, NbN composites for superconductors, the carburization of tungsten in a glow discharge methane plasma, economic considerations concerning plasma nitriding, and the corrosion properties obtained by ion nitriding.

Cross-section measurements for (n, 2a) (n, p) and (n, #alpha#) reactions on strontium isotopes at the neutron energy about 14 MeV

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Cross-sections for "8"4Sr(n, 2n)"8"3Sr, "8"6Sr(n, 2n)"8"5"mSr, "8"6Sr(n, 2n)"8"5Sr, "8"8Sr(n, 2n)"8"7"mSr, "8"4Sr(n, p)"8"4Rb, "8"6Sr(n, p)"8"6Rb, "8"8Sr(n, p)"8"8Rb and "8"8Sr(n, #alpha#)"8"5"mKr reactions have been measured at neutron energies from 13.5 to 14.6 MeV using activation technique and by means of #gamma#-ray spectrometry. The neutron flux was determined using the monitor reaction "9"3Nb(n, 2n)"9"2"mNb and the neutron energies were measured by the method of cross-section ratios for "9Zr(n, 2n)"8"9Zr to "9"3Nb (n, 2n)"9"2"mNb reactions. The results of present work are compared with data published previously.

Cross section measurement for "2"0"4Pb(n,2n)"2"0"3Pb and "2"0"6Pb(n, #alpha#)"2"0"3Hg reactions

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The cross sections of "2"0"4Pb(n,2n)"2"0"3Pb and "2"0"6Pb(n, #alpha#)"2"0"3Hg reactions have been measured by using the activation method in the neutron energy range of 13.50-14.81 MeV. Neutron fluence dose was calibrated with the cross sections of "2"7Al(n, #alpha#)"2"4Na reaction and neutron energies were determined by using the cross section ratios of "9"0Zr(n,2n)"8"9"m"+"gZr to "9"3Nb(n,2n)"9"2"mNb reactions. The results obtained are compared with the published data.

Bulk properties and photoelectron spectroscopy of the z-U-Pu phase

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

The z-phase, existing between 35% and 70% U in Pu, belongs to the high-density phases seen from the point of view of systematics of allotropic modifications of Pu metal. Despite the volume per actinide atom only slightly higher than for a-Pu, it magnetic susceptibility is much higher than for a-Pu and exceeds even the d-Pu value. Similarly, the Sommerfeld coefficient g>40mJ/mol Pu K2 exceeds the experimental d-Pu value. The data confirm that the volume is not the primary control parameter affecting the situation around the Fermi level of common Pu phases and they point against the traditional belief that they are essentially narrow 5f band systems. Electronic structure calculations suggest that the 5f states of Pu have slightly lower occupancy comparing with d-Pu. A tendency to the 5f loca...
