Konvexe und nichtkonvexe Flie?fl?chen

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

Aerial gamma ray and magnetic survey, Mississippi and Florida airborne survey: Lake Charles and Port Arthur quadrangles of Louisiana and Texas. Final report

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The Lake Charles and Port Arthur quadrangles cover approximately 10,950 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River delta area. The area overlies thick sections of the Gulf of Mexico Basin. Surficial exposures are dominated by Recent and Pleistocene sediment. A search of available literature revealed no known uranium deposits. A total of 82 uranium anomalies were detected and are discussed briefly in this report. None were considered significant and all appear to relate to cultural features. Magnetic data appear to be in agreement with existing structural interpretations of the area.

Two phases of droplet evaporation during plasma arc spraying: reply to Chen's comment about the 'rocket' effect under conditions of thermal plasma spraying

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The heating history of a droplet during its flight can be divided into two phases: (a) the initial phase when evaporation, although it occurs, does not change the heat balance of the droplet much (the case considered in our previous paper and (b) the final phase when the cooling due to evaporation balances the heat flux from the plasma. The later phase is considered in Chen's comment. In our reply, a very straightforward consideration demonstrates that even in the final phase of the droplet flight, the 'rocket' effect can be significant. (reply)

CC, CS, and IOS generalized phenomenological cross sections for atom--diatom mixtures

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Close coupled expressions for phenomenological cross sections which describe transport properties of atom--diatom mixtures are obtained in the total-J coupling scheme and are related to the bracket integrals of kinetic theory. Coupled states and infinite order sudden expressions for the generalized phenomenological cross sections using initial, final, and average l-labeling are also given. Particular care is taken to use a phase convention for the CS and IOS approximations which is consistent with the Arthurs--Dalgarno formalism and which gives the correct behavior of degeneracy averaged differential cross sections.

Molecular model for de Vries type smectic A - smectic C phase transition in liquid crystals

CERN Document Server

We develop a theory of Smectic A - Smectic C phase transition with anomalously weak smectic layer contraction. We construct a phenomenological description of this transition by generalizing the Chen-Lubensky model. Using a mean-field molecular model, we demonstrate that a relatively simple interaction potential suffices to describe the transition. The theoretical results are in excellent agreement with experimental data.

Log geometry and exploded manifolds

CERN Document Server

Log Gromov-Witten invariants have recently been defined separately by Gross and Siebert and Abramovich and Chen. This paper provides a dictionary between log geometry and holomorphic exploded manifolds in order to compare Gromov-Witten invariants defined using exploded manifolds or log schemes. The gluing formula for Gromov-Witten invariants of exploded manifolds suggests an approach to proving analogous gluing formulas for log Gromov-Witten invariants.

Methodology for Rare Earth Element Determinations of Uranium Oxides by Ion Microprobe

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

A methodology for the determination of the rare earth elements in uranium oxides by ion microprobe has been set up on a Cameca ims-3f instrument. An uranium oxide reference material from a syn-metamorphic uranium deposit related to albitisation has also been developed for this type of analysis. Applications of the methodology are presented for a series of uranium oxides selected from some major uranium deposit types: from the world's highest grade unconformity-related uranium deposit from the Athabasca Basin (Saskatchewan, Canada; the Shea Creek and the McArthur River examples), a perigranitic vein-type deposit (Pen Ar Ran, Vendee, France) and a volcanic caldera-related deposit (Streltsovkoye, Transbaikalia, Russia). Each type of uranium deposit appears to have a specific REE signature. Al...

Acoustic band gaps in arrays of neutral inclusions

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

We analyse numerically the acoustic stop band properties of an array of orthotropic coated cylinders whose elastic parameters are deduced from a geometric transform [H. Chen, C.T. Chan, Acoustic cloaking in three dimensions using acoustic metamaterials, Appl. Phys. Lett. 91 (2007) 183518]. We find that whereas a single coated inclusion is acoustically neutral at any frequency, an array of them might display some stop bands. More precisely, an array of freely vibrating coated voids is always neutral, whereas an array of clamped coated inclusions might display a zero frequency stop band. Interestingly, an array of radially symmetric coated inclusions behaves as local Helmholtz resonators, for which the eigenfield within each cloak is obtained in closed form, leading to a frequency estimate a...

A gradient-based algorithm for semiparametric models with missing covariates

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

In the parametric regression model, the covariate missing problem under missing at random is considered. It is often desirable to use flexible parametric or semiparametric models for the covariate distribution, which can reduce a potential misspecification problem. Recently, a completely nonparametric approach was developed by [H.Y. Chen, Nonparametric and semiparametric models for missing covariates in parameter regression, J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 99 (2004), pp. 1176-1189; Z. Zhang and H.E. Rockette, On maximum likelihood estimation in parametric regression with missing covariates, J. Statist. Plann. Inference 47 (2005), pp. 206-223]. Although it does not require a model for the covariate distribution or the missing data mechanism, the proposed method assumes that the covariate distribut...

Surface excitation correction of the inelastic mean free path in selected conducting polymers

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

In earlier works, the inelastic mean free path (IMFP) of electrons was determined by elastic peak electron spectroscopy (EPES) using Ni and Ag reference standard samples, but fully neglecting surface excitation. Surface excitation that is characterized by the surface excitation parameter (SEP), and may affect considerably the elastic peak for the sample and the reference material. The SEP parameters of selected conducting polymers (polythiophenes, polyaniline and polyethylene) were determined by EPES using Si and Ge reference samples. Experiments were made with a hemispherical analyzer of energy resolution 100-200 meV in the E = 0.2-2.0 keV energy range. The composition of the sample surfaces was determined by in situ XPS, their surface roughness by AFM. The experimental SEP parameter data of eight polymer samples were determined by our new procedure, using the formulae of Chen and Werner et al. in the E = 0.2-2.0 keV energy range. The trial and error procedure is ...

Steady-state film-boiling data in rod-bundle geometry and non-equilibrium correlation assessment

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

A series of 22 steady-state, rod bundle, dispersed flow film boiling experiments has been performed in the Thermal-Hydraulic Test Facility (THTF), a pressurized-water loop containing 64 full-length electrically heated rods. Test parameters in the upflow experiments cover a wide range of conditions typical of those which might be encountered during a nuclear reactor loss-of-coolant accident. Local equilibrium fluid conditions were calculated using mass and energy conservation considerations. Experimentally determined heat transfer coefficients were compared to several available film boiling heat transfer correlations: Dougall-Rohsenow, Groeneveld 5.7, Groeneveld-Delorme, Chen, Jones-Zuber, and Yoder-Rohsenow. The Groeneveld 5.7 correlation tended to predict the data better than any other correlation tested. The Dougall-Rohsenow correlation tends to overpredict the data while the Yoder-Rohsenow correlation predicted the data better than the other nonequilibrium ...

Predictions of nitrogen oxides production in diffusion turbulent flames; Predictions de la production des oxydes d`azote dans les flammes turbulentes de diffusion

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The suitability of the turbulent combustion flamelets model in order to predict the index of NO{sub x} production in turbulent flames of hydrogen diffusion is analyzed. In the flamelet approach, the turbulent flame is equivalent to a group of laminar flames submitted to a mechanical stretching which generates a chemical disequilibrium. This effect can be described by the stretching or by the scalar dissipation ratio. A numerical modeling is performed in order to evaluate the advantages of both approaches and to compare the behaviour of the NO{sub x} emission index with the experiments of Chen and Driscoll. This study shows that predictions of NO{sub x} emission indexes have a correct behaviour with respect to the Damkoehler number only when the scalar dissipation ratio is used as a parameter to describe the chemical state outside equilibrium. Predictions of the flamelet models are improving when the Damkoehler number increases. On the other hand, the absolute ...
