[mRNA level and cytochrome P450 1A activity in the liver of C57BL mice induced by various xenobiotics].

Science.gov (United States)

The rate of hepatic cytochrome P450 Cypla1 and Cyp1a2 induction was investigated in C57BL male mice during induction with o-aminoazotoluene (OAT), benzo[a]pyrene (BP) and 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone (AQ). The Cypla1 mPNA level determined by quantitative RT-competitive PCR increased more than three orders of magnitude during induction with OAT and BP compared with untreated animals and remained unchanged during induction with AQ. The Cypla2 mRNA level was only 8.5, 18.7 and 1.9 times higher during induction with OAT, BP and AQ respectively than in untreated mice. At the same time 7-Ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) and 7-Methoxyresorufin-O-demethylase (MROD) activities of Cypla were also investigated in liver. The increase of Cypla1 mRNA level correlated with the increase of EROD activity. This suggests involvement of the transcriptional mechanism of the inducibility of this enzyme. In the case of Cypla2 there was ...

The volumetric and thermochemical properties of Y(ClO_4)_3 (aq), Yb(ClO_4)_3 (aq), Dy(ClO_4)_3 (aq), and Sm(ClO_4)_3 (aq) at T=(288.15,298.15,313.15, and 328.15) K and p=0.1 MPa

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Relative densities and relative massic heat capacities have been measured for aqueous solutions of Y(ClO_4)_3, Yb(ClO_4)_3, Dy(ClO_4)_3, and Sm(ClO_4)_3 at T=(288.15,298.15,313.15, and 328.15) K and p=0.1 MPa. These measurements were made in the concentration range 0.01624#<=#m/(mol#centre dot#kg"-"1)#<=#0.41822 using a Sodev 02D Vibrating Tube Densimeter and a Picker Microflow Calorimeter, respectively. To counter the potential effects of hydrolysis, aqueous solutions of the investigated salts were acidified with perchloric acid. After correcting for the presence of the acid, the measured properties were used to calculate apparent molar volumes and apparent molar heat capacities for solutions of the perchlorate salts in water. The calculated apparent molar properties were modeled at each investigated temperature using Pitzer ion interaction equations to produce estimates of apparent molar volumes and heat capacities at infinite dilution. In addition, the temperature dependences ...

Redox reactions of Cu(II)-amine complexes in aqueous solutions

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

A number of amines can be employed for all volatile treatment (AVT) of steam generator (SG) systems of nuclear power reactors. These amines form complexes with Cu{sup 2+} and Ni{sup 2+} ions which come into water due to corrosion. The redox reactions of a number of Cu(II)-AVT amine complexes and the stability of the transient species formed have been studied by pulse radiolysis technique. Rate constants for the reaction of e{sub aq}{sup -} with a number of Cu(II)-amine complexes have been determined by following the decay of e{sub aq}{sup -} absorption. Stability of Cu(I)-amine complexes was studied by following the kinetics of the bleaching signal formed at the {lambda}{sub max} of the Cu(II) amine complex. Except for Cu(I)-triethanolamine complex all other Cu(I)-amine complexes were found to be stable. One-electron oxidation of Cu(II) amine complexes was studied using azidyl radicals for the oxidation reaction as OH radicals react with the ...

Pulse radiolysis study of reactions of tetracycline with radiolytically generated reducing species

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The transients involved in the reaction of tetracycline (TC) with reducing radicals such as e{sub aq}{sup -}, (CH{sub 3}){sub 2}COH and CO{sub 2}{sup .-}have been characterized by the pulse radiolysis technique. The semi-reduced species formed ({lambda}{sub max} = 630 nm, {epsilon} 3.4 x 10{sup 3} dm{sup 3} mol{sup -1} cm{sup -1}) has been found to be a strong reductant with reduction potential lying in the range -0.450 to -1.40 V vs NHE. TC reacts with e{sub aq}{sup -} at diffusion-controlled rates and the rate constant, depending upon the ionic form of TC existing at a particular pH, varies from 1.2 x 10{sup 10} to 2.8 x 10{sup 10} dm{sup 3} mol{sup -1} s{sup -1}. Based on these results a plausible site of electron addition has been suggested. Reaction of H atoms with TC gives rise to a transient which exhibits spectral and kinetic features different from that of semi-reduced species. (author).

Thermodynamics of complexation of aqueous 18-crown-6 with potassium ion: apparent molar volumes and apparent molar heat capacities of aqueous 18-crown-6 and of the (18-crown-6 + potassium chloride) complex at temperatures (278.15 to 393.15) K, at molalities (0.02 to 0.3) mol . kg"-"1, and at the pressure 0.35 MPa

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

We have measured the densities at temperatures T = (278.15 to 363.15) K and heat capacities at T = (278.15 to 393.15) K of aqueous solutions of 18-crown-6 and of (18-crown-6 + KCl) at molalities m = (0.02 to 0.3) mol . kg"-"1 and at the pressure 0.35 MPa. We have calculated apparent molar volumes V_#phi# and apparent molar heat capacities C_p_,_#phi# for 18-crown-6(aq), and we have applied Young's Rule and have accounted for chemical speciation and relaxation effects to resolve V_#phi# and C_p_,_#phi# for the (18-crown-6: K"+,Cl"-)(aq) complex in the mixture. We have also calculated estimates of the change in volume #DELTA#_rV_m, the change in heat capacity #DELTA#_rC_p_,_m, the change in enthalpy #DELTA#_rH_m, and the equilibrium quotient log Q for formation of the complex at T = (278.15 to 393.15) K and m = (0 to 0.3) mol . kg"-"1.

Pulse radiolysis of aqueous solutions of tetraphenylphosphonium ions

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The reactions of tetraphenylphosphonium ion (Ar_4P"+) with esub(aq)"-, H atoms and OH radicals have been investigated. The absorption spectra of three transient species were obtained. Ar_4Psup(.) radicals formed by the reaction: Ar_4P"+ + esub(aq)"- #-># Ar_4Psup(.) have a maximum absorption at 305 nm [epsilon _3_0_5 = (9400 +- 300)dm"3mol"-"1cm"-"1] and decays by second-order kinetics with the rate constant 2k = (2.7 +- 0.4) x 10"9dm"3mol"-"1s"-"1. H atoms and OH radicals form transient adducts to the phenyl groups of the Ar_4P"+ ion with the rate constants of (1.5 +- 0.3) x 10"9 dm"3mol"-"1s"-"1 and (3.0 +- 0.3) x 10"9dm"3mol"-"1s"-"1, respectively. Both adducts have broad absorption spectra at 300 approximately 380 nm (lambdasub(max) = 340 nm) with the molar extinction coefficients epsilonsub(340) = 5400 +- 300 dm"3mol"-"1cm"-"1 for the H adduct and epsilonsub(340) = 3500 +- 200 dm"3mol"-"1cm"-"1 for the OH adduct. Neutrino-induced pion production from nuclei at medium energies

CERN Document Server

We present a fully relativistic formalism for describing neutrino-induced $\\Delta$-mediated single-pion production from nuclei. We assess the ambiguities stemming from the $\\Delta$ interactions. Variations in the cross sections of over 10% are observed, depending on whether or not magnetic-dipole dominance is assumed to extract the vector form factors. These uncertainties have a direct impact on the accuracy with which the axial-vector form factors can be extracted. Different predictions for $C_5^A(Q^2)$ induce up to 40-50% effects on the $\\Delta$-production cross sections. To describe the nucleus, we turn to a relativistic plane-wave impulse approximation (RPWIA) using realistic bound-state wave functions derived in the Hartree approximation to the $\\sigma$-$\\omega$ Walecka model. For neutrino energies larger than 1 GeV, we show that a relativistic Fermi-gas model with appropriate binding-energy correction produces comparable results as the RPWIA which ...

Evaluation of a convenient method of assessing rodent visual function in safety pharmacology studies: Effects of sodium iodate on visual acuity and retinal morphology in albino and pigmented rats and mice

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

Introduction: We have evaluated the ability of a semi-automated, optomotor reflex method to assess drug-induced visual dysfunction, in albino and pigmented rats and mice. Methods: Male Han Wistar (HW) and Long Evans (LE) rats and mice (CD-1 and C57BL/6) were tested in a chamber formed by 4 computer monitors displaying a rotating vertical grating, to elicit head-tracking movements. The highest visible grating frequency was taken as the threshold of visual acuity, in cycles per degree (c/d). Animals received an intravenous infusion of either sodium iodate (50mg/kg) or 0.9% w/v NaCl (aq). They were tested 2h later, then re-tested daily for a further 3days. The time course of the effect was assessed in HW rats over a 6-week period, including electron microscopy, and immunohistochemical analysi...

Development of an incinerator using ceramic filters for low level radioactive solid waste treatment

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

This facility has treatment capacity of 12 kg/hr, and is equipped with a furnace, two ceramic filter chambers, each of which hangs inside the 36 ceramic filter elements having mean pore size of 44 #mu#m. Three series of experiments were performed during a period from October 1972 to August 1973. The first was measurement of the change of pressure drop of the primary and the secondary filters after an operation of 52 days (352 hours). The pressure drop of the primary filter did not change during the operation, but the secondary brought a fairly large increment, from 79 to 140 mmAq. The second was measurement of the after-burning effect of the primary filter for the soot and tar in the off-gas. Through the after-burning most of the soot was removed from the off-gas, though the tar was not perfectly taken off. At the secondary filter, some of the tar was burnt, but most of it was caught by the filter as aerosol. The third was measurement of decontamination factors of ...

Yield-increasing additives in kraft pulping: Effect on carbohydrate retention, composition and handsheet properties

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

In this thesis, increased hemicellulose retention during kraft pulping has been studied. The work has been divided into three parts: i) Development of an accessible and reliable method for determination of carbohydrate composition of kraft pulps ii) Investigation of the composition and molecular mass distributions of the carbohydrates in kraft pulps with increased hemicellulose content iii) Investigation of the effect of increased hemicellulose content on the sheet properties of kraft pulps with increased hemicellulose content. A method for carbohydrate determination was developed. In this method, enzymes are used to hydrolyse the pulp into monosaccharides. A relatively mild acid hydrolysis is performed prior to detection on an HPLC with an RI-detector. The pulp is not derivatized and no pre-treatment (mechanical or chemical) is needed to determine the carbohydrate composition using the method developed here. Peak deconvolution software is used to improve the accuracy. Polysulphide and ...

Oxidation and adsorption of Co(II)EDTA 2- complexes in subsurface materials with iron and manganese oxide grain coatings

Science.gov (United States)

Batch interaction experiments were performed under aerobic conditions to characterize the adsorption behavior and valence speciation of CoEDTA complexes (equimolar at 10 -5 mol/L) in a series of Pliocene subsurface sediments containing various amounts of Fe and Mn oxides. The experiments were performed in 0.003 mol/L Ca(ClO 4 ) 2 with a solids concentration of 500 g/L at variable pH (4-9) and at the natural pH of the sediments (pH = 8.3). Three of these subaerial sediments (Ringold 1, 2, 3) contained significant quantities of extractable Fe and Mn, while the fourth (Ringold 4) was virtually devoid of sesquioxide precipitates. Microscopic and mineralogic analyses of the most heavily encrusted material (Ringold 2) showed that the oxides existed as intergrain cements and contained crystalline goethite and rancieite/todorokite. Adsorption on a synthetic analog sorbent (0.6 mass % ferrihydrite-coated sand) over a range in pH showed that, while both Co(II)EDTA 2- and Co(III)EDTA - sorb ...
