Texture of YBa_2Cu_3O_7_-_x superconductor thick films

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

YBa_2Cu_3O_7_-_x thick films have been deposited on silver sheets and MgO single crystals by spray pyrolysis. Film texture is related to film thickness and sintering temperature. The X-ray intensity ratio of the 005 peak to the 110 peak is higher for thin films deposited at the higher temperatures. However, elevated temperatures promote copper diffusion and second-phase formation in films deposited on silver. Films deposited on MgO can have larger grain sizes and are more oriented than those deposited on silver.

Theoretical electron-positron zone-reduced momentum density for YBa_2Cu_3O_7: Fermi surface and wave-function effects

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Using the linearized augmented-plane-wave (LAPW) -calculated electron and positron charge densities for YBa_2Cu_3O_7, the Brillouin-zone-reduced electron-positron momentum density is computed and the zone-reduced two-dimensional angular correlation of annihilation radiation (2D ACAR) spectrum is produced. The calculations show that the relative weights of the Fermi-surface discontinuities are substantially altered due to the positron preferentially sampling the Cu-O chain region. In addition, the reduced 2D ACAR spectrum contains large k-dependent wave-function effects. The theoretical zone-reduced 2D ACAR spectrum is compared to the several existing experimental spectra. It is concluded that, at present, positron-annihilation experiments do not provide consistent and clear evidence for the existence and shapes of Fermi surfaces in ...

Positron annihilation in high-T/sub c/ superconductors

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

We report ab initio calculations of positron wave functions in the high-T/sub c/ superconductors YBa_2Cu_3O_7, Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8, and Tl_2Ba_2CaCu_2O_8 using the general potential linearized augmented plane-wave method. The calculated positron wave functions are fairly insensitive to whether or not electron-positron correlation is included in the calculation for YBa_2Cu_3O_7 and Tl_2Ba_2CaCu_2O_8, but the calculated positron density is quite sensitive to correlation in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8. While the positron wave function samples primarily the chain region in YBa_2Cu_3O_7, the results indicate that positrons should ...

Investigation of A_1_g phonons in YBa_2Cu_3O_7 by means of linearized-augmented-plane-wave atomic-force calculations

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

We report first-principles frozen-phonon calculations for the determination of the force-free geometry and the dynamical matrix of the five Raman-active A_1_g modes in YBa_2Cu_3O_7. To establish the shape of the phonon potentials atomic forces are calculated within the linearized-augmented-plane-wave method. Two different schemes emdash the local-density approximation (LDA) and a generalized gradient approximation (GGA)emdash are employed for the treatment of electronic exchange and correlation effects. We find that in the case of LDA the resulting phonon frequencies show a deviation from experimental values of approximately -10%. Invoking GGA the frequency values are significantly improved and also the eigenvectors are in very good agreement with experimental findings. copyright 1997 The American Physical Society.

The study of the intrinsic behavior of high transition temperature copper-oxide superconductors (HTSC) has proven to be challenging because of the extreme sensitivity of their transport properties on material quality. These compounds are characterized by a high degree of structural and electrical anisotropy, and a very short superconductive coherence length of the same order as the size of the crystalline unit cell (~5-30 A). As a result, microscopic defects such as oxygen vacancies, cationic disorder, and the presence of minute impurities have a significant effect on electrical transport in these materials. Therefore, much effort has been expended in synthesizing sizable samples that are homogeneous, well characterized, and emenable to the study of the anisotropic properties of the HTSC. We have demonstrated that thin films of HTSC compounds such as rm ...

Analyses of the grain boundary misorientation and oxygen content of bulk processed YBa_2Cu_3O_7_-_#delta#

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The grain boundary misorientation distribution of 203 grain boundaries in bulk processed high Tc superconductor YBa_2Cu_3O_7_-_#delta# with five processing conditions;, was studied. Two complementary analytical approaches, Grain Boundary Misorientation Distribution (GBMD) from the random description, using a hypothesis test and #chi#"2 analysis, and Grain Boundary Character Distribution (GBCD), using the Coincidence Site Lattice (CSL) model, were applied. The GBMD and GBCD both showed grain boundary evolution departing from a random distribution above 935 C processing temperature. The GBCD analyses indicated an approximately linear increase in the population of CSL-related boundaries, among which the tetragonal CSL (c/a #not =# 3) boundaries grew in the same trend while orthorhombic boundaries (c/a = 3) became stagnated. The results from comparing the ...

Use of real-time Fourier Transform Infrared Reflectivity as an in situ monitor of YBCO film growth and processing

CERN Document Server

Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy has been utilized during high rate E-beam evaporation/deposition of YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO). The results demonstrate the great utility of FTIR as an in situ monitor of YBCO deposition and processing. We detect different (amorphous/fine polycrystalline) insulating pre-existing phases to the high Tc superconducting phase which appear to have distinct reflectivity fingerprints dominated by thin film interference effects, as a function of temperature and oxygen pressure. These fingerprints reveal some of the kinetic and thermodynamic pathways during the growth of YBCO.

NMR in highly correlated superconductors

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Results of our systematic NMR study in high T_c cuprates are reviewed. The antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations (AFSF) decrease in the order of La_1_._8_5Sr_0_._1_5CuO_4. YBa_2Cu_3O_7 and Tl_2Ba_2CuO_6_+_y. 1/T_1 of "6"3Cu in the CuO_2 plane in the normal state follows essentially a Curie-Weiss law at high temperature and T_1T = const. law at low temperature. The temperature dependence of 1/T_1 and the Knight shift together with their impurity effect in the superconducting state strongly suggest d-wave pairing implying the AFSF to be responsible for the occurrence of superconductivity. From the NQR frequency measurement the density of Cu 3d and O 2p holes decreases and increases, respectively, in the order of La, Y and Tl compounds, which is consistent with the change of AFSF. The relation between T_c and #nu#_Q, and ...

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Buffer layers with 100% lattice match with YBa2Cu3O7 - ? (YBCO) were prepared from mixed rare-earth-oxides applying a simple sol-gel process and dip-coating method. Structural analysis of the sol-gel derived powder by X-ray diffraction revealed that the mixing parameter, which eliminates the lattice mismatch with YBCO, is x = 0.2382, 0.1852, 0.1252, 0.0906, 0.0793 and 0.0395 in (Eu1 - xHox)2O3, (Eu1 - xErx)2O3, (Eu1 - xYbx)2O3, (Gd1 - xHox)2O3, (Gd1 - xYx)2O3 and (Gd1 - xYbx)2O3, respectively. Microstructural investigations were carried out for Gd1.819Ho0.181O3 films epitaxially grown on cube-textured Ni (100) substrates by sol-gel dip-coating process. X-ray diffraction of the buffer showed strong out-of-plane orientation on Ni tape. The (Gd1 - xHox)2O3 (222) pole figure indicated a single cube-on-cube textured structure. High density of nanodots on atomically flat CeO_2 buffer layers for inducing effective vortex-pinning centers in YBa_2Cu_3O_7_-_#delta# films on sapphire

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Epitaxial CeO_2 buffer layers were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on r-cut sapphire substrates. An atomically flat CeO_2 surface with a high density of nanodots was formed by a self-assembly process. Scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy investigation showed that the nanodots were CeO_2 other than impurities. YBa_2Cu_3O_7_-_#delta# (YBCO) thin films were then grown on the annealed and the as-grown CeO_2-buffered sapphires by PLD. The transport measurement results showed that the nanodots enhanced the effective pinning potential and significantly increased critical current density (J _c). Especially, YBCO films with an annealed CeO_2 buffer layer showed a high J _c peak when the applied field was directed along the c-axis of YBCO. Cross-section transmission electron microscopy investigation revealed that ...

Growth rate control and solid-gas modeling of TFA-YBa_2Cu_3O_7 thin film processing

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The trifluoroacetate metal-organic decomposition route to YBa_2Cu_3O_7 film growth was investigated in order to bring new insights in the growth mechanism and its dependence on processing conditions and critical current density. Precursor films were processed on LaAlO_3 substrates at different total pressure, oxygen partial pressure, water vapor partial pressure, and volume gas flow rate keeping the growth temperature at 740 "0C. The influence of these various experimental parameters on the film growth rate, which was evaluated by in situ electrical resistance measurements, was studied thoroughly. It was found that the growth rate is nearly independent of the oxygen pressure and proportional to the square root of the water pressure. Additionally, the growth rate increases with a decrease of the total pressure or an increase of the gas flow rate. An empirical ...

Cu adatom interactions with single- and polycrystalline Bi_2Ca/sub 1+//sub x/Sr/sub 2-//sub x/Cu_2O/sub 8+//sub y/ and YBa_2Cu_3O/sub 7-//sub x/

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The electronic structure and surface interactions vapor-deposited Cu on single-crystal and polycrystalline Bi_2Ca/sub 1+//sub x//sub Sr>2-//sub x//sub Cu>2/O/sub 8+//sub y/ were studied using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Microfabrication processes for high-T_c superconducting films

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Microfabrication processes for Y-Ba-Cu-O films have been investigated, using ion-beam techniques. High-T_c superconducting lines as narrow as 0.8 #mu#m have been fabricated from epitaxial YBa_2Cu_3O_7 _- _y films by Ar ion-beam etching (IBE), combined with focused ion-beam (FIB) lithography. The resulting lines, 1.3 #mu#m wide and 2 mm long, showed a zero resistance temperature of 81 K and a critical current density of 1.9 x 10"4 A/cm"2 at 77.3 K. Maskless etching was carried out using 130-keV au"+ focused ion-beam (FIB) with a 0.1-#mu#m-diameter beam. A 50-nm-thick film was patterned into 0.3-#mu#m-wide lines at a dose of 5 x "1"6 ions/cm"2. In comparison with Ar IBE, Cl_2 reactive ion-beam etching (RIBE) exhibited an enhancement effect in sputtering yield. Ion implantation with 300-keV Si"+ "+ FIB also indicated the possibility to produce submicrometer ...

Characteristic Of Induction Magnetic Field On The Laboratory Scale Superconducting Fault Current Limiter Circuit

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Model construction of the laboratory scale superconducting fault current limiter circuit (SFCL) has been performed. The SFCL is fault current limiter and used as electric network security. It mainly consists of a copper coil, a superconducting ring and an iron core that are concentrically arranged. The SFCL circuit is essentially a transformer where the secondary windings are being replaced by the ring of YBa_2Cu_3O_7_-_x superconductor (HTS). The ring has critical transition temperature Tc = 92 K and critical current Ic = 3.61 A. Characterization of the SFCL circuit is simulated by ANSYS version 5.4 software. The SFCL circuit consists of load and transformer impedances. The results show that the inductions of magnet field flux in the iron core of primer windings and ring disappear to one other before fault state. It means that impedance of the transformer is ...

High resolution transmission electron microscopy of partial states of oxygen order in YBa_2Cu_3O_z

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

This paper reports on high resolution electron microscopy used to investigate the effect of electron irradiation induced oxygen loss on the states of partial order in YBa_2Cu_3O_z. Contrast effects visible in the [001] zone image as a result of the degree of the out-of-plane correlation of these ordered states are investigated. Using statistical simulations to aid in the analysis of the HREM images, an interpretation based on a kinetically limited evolution of the variation of long range [001] ordering is proposed.

Tight-binding Hamiltonians for high-temperature superconductors and applications to coherent-potential-approximation calculations of the electronic properties of La/sub 2-//sub x/Ba/sub x/CuO/sub 4-//sub y/

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

We present accurate tight-binding parametrizations of the first-principles augmented-plane-wave or linear-augmented-plane-wave band structures of LaCuO_3, La_2CuO_4, Ba_2CuO_4, and the high-temperature superconductor YBa_2Cu_3O_7. We discuss the methodology and efficient application of these fits, including as an example our tight-binding coherent-potential-approximation (CPA) calculations of the effects of disorder on the electronic structure of La/sub 2-//sub x/Ba/sub x/CuO/sub 4-//sub y/. Our CPA calculations support the hypothesis of a rigid-band lowering of the Fermi level for La/sub 2-//sub x/Ba/sub x/CuO_4, enhancing the density of states there. However, for La_2BaCuO/sub 4-//sub y/ they yield the interesting result that oxygen vacancies also lower E/sub F/ and raise N(E/sub F/). This is a significant result for the theory of superconductivity in these ...

Relations between structural and superconducting properties of bulk and thin film high-T_c materials

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The structural ordering of oxygen deficient and Co-doped YBCO (YBa_2Cu_3_-_yCo_yO_6_+_x) have been studied experimentally, and by computer simulations of the oxygen ordering in the basal plane of the structure. The calculations are based on the two-dimensional ASYNNNI model and its modifications. Good agreement is established between the ASYNNNI calculations and the experimentally observed structural properties of the double cell ortho-II structure and the oxygen disordering process from Co-doping into the basal plane. A model that relates the superconducting transition temperature T_c(x) of undoped YBCO and T_c(y) of Co-doped YBCO to the formation of specific domains of the two orthorhombic ordered oxygen phases, ortho-I and ortho-II, shows a close agreement with experimental T_c(x) and T_c(y) data of samples prepared under equilibrium conditions. The structural changes as a result of metal ion ...

Structural Characterization and Photoluminescent Properties of (La1-xSmx)2Ti2O7 Solid Solutions Synthesized by a Sol-Gel Route

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

Abstract A series of compounds with the general formula (La1-xSmx)2Ti2O7 (0-- x --1.0) has been synthesized by a sol-gel method and characterized by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). These compounds are structurally isomorphic to perovskite-type La2Ti2O7 until a substitution rate of x = 0.8. Above this substitution rate (x >-0.8), a biphasic mixture is obtained between the substituted perovskite layered phase and the pyrochlore Sm2Ti2O7 phase. The unusual phosphor (La1-xSmx)2Ti2O7 has been elaborated and its luminescent properties were investigated for low rates of substitution. The emission and excitation spectra were used to study the luminescent properties. The (La1.9Sm0.1)2Ti2O7 powders emit bright red-orange lightunder UV excitation. The ...

Effects of Cr content and the addition of Cr_2O_7"2"- ion on corrosion resistance of stainless steel in nitric acid solutions

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

A nitric acid solution containing Cr_2O_7"2"- ion is used for a corrosion test which simulates the condition in a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant. As the effect of Cr content on the corrosion resistance of stainless steel is not yet fully understood in that solution, the effects of Cr content in an alloy and that of Cr_2O_7"2"- ion in nitric acid on the corrosion rate were studied by using electro-chemical measurements. The increase of Cr content reduced the general corrosion rate in nitric acid solution without Cr_2O_7"2"- ion, however it increased that in nitric acid solution containing Cr_2O_7"2"- ion. It is considered that the reversal of the Cr content dependency is due to a rise of the corrosion potential caused by addition of Cr_2O_7"2"- ion to the potential region where a ...

Structure and electric transport properties of LnSr_2FeTiO_7 (Ln = La, Nd and Gd)

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Three new phases with compositions, LaSr_2FeTiO_7, NdSr_2FeTiO_7 and GdSr_2FeTiO_7, were prepared by the traditional ceramic method. Lazy-Pulverix analysis of the X-ray diffraction data suggests that the phases crystallize in the RP-type (n = 2) structure in the space group, I4/mmm. The cell dimensions along the c-axis decrease with decrease in size of the rare earth ions. Electrical resistivity, as a function of temperature, shows that the materials are insulators and the resistivity decreases with decrease in the size of the rare earth ion, which is attributed to increase in the three-dimensional character. Anisotropic exchange in frustrated pyrochlore Yb2Ti2O7

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The local Yb3+ magnetic susceptibility tensor was recently measured in the frustrated pyrochlore compound Yb2Ti2O7 by means of in-field polarized neutron scattering in a single crystal. A very anisotropic effective exchange tensor was derived for the Yb3+ ion. Using this result, we reinterpret here the data for the powder susceptibility in Yb2Ti2O7. We show that, in the case of a well-isolated Kramers doublet with anisotropic g and exchange tensors, the inverse susceptibility for a powder sample does not strictly obey a Curie-Weiss law at low temperature. We discuss the consequences regarding the paramagnetic Curie temperature, usually taken as a measure of the exchange/dipolar interaction, and the exotic 'slow fluctuation' ground state of Yb2Ti2O7. Spin dynamics in Ho_2Ru_2O_7

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The spin relaxation processes within the pyrochlore Ho_2Ru_2O_7 have been investigated by neutron scattering and bulk property techniques. A single-ion process, that is thermally activated, dominates the spin-spin relaxation spectrum above 2 K. Assuming Arrhenius behaviour, we found an activation energy #DELTA# = (329 #+-# 6) K and characteristic relaxation time #tau#_0 (5.2 #+-# 0.3) x 10"-"1"2 s in the paramagnetic state, akin to those found in the spin ice, Ho_2Ti_2O_7. Atlow temperature (T<95 K) the activation energy lowers and below 20 K the entropy and ac susceptibility are similar to that observed in other spin ice compounds within a 10 kOe field.

Lattice constants obtained from X-ray powder data compare well with results from previous studies. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetization data were obtained for all samples between 300 K and 4.2 K (700 K for R = Gd) and a range of applied fields. Magnetic properties of some Au_3R compounds

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The magnetization of a series of intermetallic compounds Au_3R, where R is Gd through Yb, was investigated at 2.5 to 300"0K in applied fields up to 26 kOe. All the compounds studied exhibited the orthorhombic TiCu_3--Do/sub a/ type structure. For high temperatures, the temperature dependence of the inverse susceptibility followed a Curie--Weiss law, yielding effective paramagnetic moments in good agreement with the values calculated for free tripositive rare earth ions. At low temperatures, deviations from Curie--Weiss behavior were observed in all cases. These deviations are ascribed to the influence of crystal-field and exchange interactions. (auth).

Highly corrosion-resistant Cu_7_0(Ni,Fe,Mn,Cr)_3_0 cupronickel designed using a cluster model for stable solid solutions

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Minor M (M = Fe, Mn, Cr) additions are widely added to enhance the corrosion resistance of commercial cupronickel alloys. The present paper aims at optimizing the amounts of M in Cu_7_0(Ni,Fe,Mn,Cr)_3_0 (at.%) alloys using a cluster-plus-glue-atom model for stable solid solutions. By this model, it assumed that 1 M atom and 12 Ni atoms formed an M-centered and Ni-surrounded cube-octahedron cluster and the isolated M_1Ni_1_2 clusters are embedded in a Cu matrix, conforming to a cluster formula [M_1Ni_1_2]Cu_3_0_._3 = [M_1_/_1_3Ni_1_2_/_1_3]_3_0Cu_7_0. A structure of this kind satisfies ideally the nearest neighbor requirement, i.e. only M-Ni and Ni-Cu neighbors are allowed and the unfavorable Cu-M pairs are avoided, and hence it describes a stable solid solution structure with good thermal stability. Electrochemical corrosion measurements indicated that [(Fe_0_._6Mn_0_._2_5Cr_0_._1_5)_1Ni_1_2]Cu_3_0_._3 ...

Study on the spatial structure of annomuricatin A, a cyclohexapeptide from the seeds of Annona muricata

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

A cyclic hexapeptide, annomuricatin A (the molecular formula: C27H38N6O7), was isolated from the seeds of Annona muricata. The types and sequence of the amino acids were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The stereochemistry of the title cyclopeptide was clarified by X-ray crystallographic study. The backbone contains two b-turns, one is type I b-turn and the other is type II, which are stabilized by two transannular 41 backbone hydrogen bonds between Ala and Phe. There are intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the cyclopeptide and the solvent molecules which maintained the steady spatial arrangement in crystal.

Propagation of Surface Ripples on Pyrochlore Single Crystals Induced by Ion Beam Bombardment

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The morphological evolution of ripples formed on the surface of Cd2Nb2O7 pyrochlore single crystals by focused ion beam (FIB) bombardment was investigated using in situ electron microscopy. At high ion fluences and off-normal bombardment angles, faceted surface ripples with a terrace-like structure were observed. The ripple propagation direction was oriented along the projected ion beam direction at incident angles ranging from 35 to 65 following high-dose ion bombardment. One side of the terrace was found to be perpendicular to the incident ion beam direction, while the other side was parallel to the ion beam. The terrace propagation velocity and direction were determined and interpreted on the basis of this asymmetric structure. A model based on the propagation of a shock wave that effectively self-selects a stable slope, was developed in order to explain the observed faceted ripple formation.

The magnetic pyrochlore Er{sub 2}Ru{sub 2}O{sub 7} has been studied with neutron scattering and susceptibility measurements down to a base temperature of 270 mK. For the low temperature phase in which the Er sublattice orders, new magnetic Bragg peaks are reported which can be indexed with integer (hkl) for a face centered cubic cell. Inelastic measurements reveal a wealth of crystal field levels of the Er ion and a copious amount of magnetic scattering below 15 meV. The three lowest groups of crystal field levels are at 6.7, 9.1 and 18.5 meV.

X-ray and UV-light irradiation effects on oxide superconducting thin films

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Oxide superconducting thin films were irradiated with X-rays and ultra-violet (UV) light, and induced radiation effects on electrical and chemical properties were examined by transport measurement, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), diamagnetization measurement and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). After irradiation for ErBa_2Cu_3O_x films with X-rays emitted from a Rh tube for 100 hours, superconductivity was remarkably damaged, destroying the zero-resistance state. The UV-light irradiation for Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_x films was performed in He gas of about 500 Pa with a low pressure mercury lamp. The superconductivity was gradually degraded with the UV irradiation time up to 70 minutes. In both cases, adequate oxygen-annealing treatments restored superconductivity. The X-ray photoemission spectra showed that the mean Cu valence of the films was decreased approximately from +2 to +1 by the irradiation. From these results we can find that ...

Focused ion beam processes for high-T/sub c/ superconductors

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Focused ion beam (FIB) processes have been developed for Y--Ba--Cu--O superconductor films. A Y--Cu liquid metal ion source has been fabricated, using a Y_6_7 --Cu_3_3 eutectic alloy as the ion source. As-sputtered Y--Ba--Cu--O film etch rate ratios to GaAs(100) and Si(100) substrates are 0.28 and 1.4 for 130-keV Au"+ FIB ion etching, respectively. Y--Ba--Cu--O submicron patterns have been demonstrated by using FIB lithography and Cl_2 reactive ion beam etching. Moreover, a Y--Ba--Cu--O superconducting line with 4-#mu#m linewidth has been fabricated by annealing an as-sputtered Y--Ba--Cu--O line pattern. T/sub c/ control of Y--Ba--Cu--O film has been achieved by 200-keV Ne"+, using conventional ion implantation and 300 keV Si"+"+ FIB ion implantation.

Enzymatic catalysis in cosolvent modified pressurized organic solvents.

Science.gov (United States)

An important advantage of carrying out enzymatic catalysis in organic media is the increased solubility of hydrophobic substrates. This study compares a model lipase catalyzed esterification of cholesterol using vinyl acetate (VA) in two such nontraditional media: high-pressure hexane and supercritical (SCF) ethane. The effect of using one of the reactants (VA) as a cosolvent to increase the solubility of the other reactant (cholesterol) in SCF ethane has been investigated. The thermodynamic activity of water (a(w)) in the reaction media was controlled by the direct addition of the salt hydrate pair Na(4)P(2)O(7)/Na(4)P(2)O(7).10H(2)O. The a(w) of the salt hydrate system is shown to be a function of pressure and its variation over the pressure range 104-173 bar has been estimated. The initial reaction rate in pressurized hexane was found to vary linearly with the cholesterol concentration. The reaction ...

Synthesis, characterization and optical properties of a high NIR reflecting yellow inorganic pigment: Mo"6"+ doped Y_2Ce_2O_7 as a cool colorant

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Full text: Pigments possessing the ability to confer high solar reflectance have received considerable attention in recent years. The inorganic class of NIR reflective pigments are mainly metal oxides and are primarily employed in two applications: (i) visual camouflage and (ii) reducing heat build up. More than half of the solar radiation consists of near-infrared radiation (52%), the remaining being 43% visible light and 5% ultraviolet radiation. Over heating due to solar radiation negatively affects comfort in the built environment and contributes substantially to electrical consumption for air conditioning and release of green house gases. A pigment which has strong reflections in the NIR region (780-2500 nm) can be referred to as a 'cool' pigment. However, most of the NIR reflective inorganic pigments particularly yellow (eg. cadmium yellow, lead chromate, chrome titanate yellow etc.) contain toxic metals and hence their consumption is being limited. Replacing them with ...

Observation of high permittivity in Ho substituted BaZr_0_._1Ti_0_._9O_3 ceramics

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The authors observed an extremely high permittivity (#approx#35 000 at T_C) in barium zirconate titanate (BaZr_0_._1Ti_0_._9O_3) ceramics with holmium substitution (1-5 mol %) in Ba site. Careful microstructural investigation and energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis of the 1-2 mol % of Ho substituted ceramics showed the enrichment of a Ho-phase along the grain boundaries with a composition close to the Ho_2Ti_2O_7 pyrochlore. The formation of Ho rich phase resulted in the Maxwell-Wagner polarization mechanism, which leads to this unusually high permittivity. Ceramics with 3 mol % or higher Ho content showed lesser permittivity values compared to 1-2 mol %, probably due to the increase in pyrochlore phase. These high dielectric constant ceramics are useful in nanoscale devices.

Chemical properties of positive singly charged astatine ion in aqueous solution

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The mobility of oxidized astatine in solutions H(Na)ClO_4 (#mu#=0.4M)-1.10"-"4M K_2Cr_2O_7 has been measured at 25 degC in the interval 0.63<=pH<=1.68. Under these conditions astatine migrates to the cathode only. The speeds of the migration depends upon the concentration of hydrogen ions in solutions are: pH 1.68 Usub(c)=1.17.10"-"4 cm"2 V"-"1 s"-"1; pH 0.63 Usub(c)=2.67.10"-"4 cm"2 V"-"1 s"-"1. The effect agrees with the opinion that the singly charged cation of astatine formed in acidic solutions is a strong aquacomplex [(H_2O)sub(x)At]"+ (x=1-2) (protonated hypoastatic acid). Deprotonation constant of this cation is Ksub(dp)=0.032+-0.005. Specific properties of the astatine cation are given. They can be explained, probably, through the peculiarities of its structure. Production and Purification of UO_3 from rock phosphate deposits and its characterization

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

This study was carried out mainly to produce uranium trioxide (UO_3), matching standard commercial specification from rock phosphate deposits in Uro and Kurun at eastern part of the Nuba Mountains. A simplified hydrometallurgical procedure has been adopted for production of yellow cake from the ore. The powdered ore sample was leached with concentrated H_2SO_4 acid with and without addition of KCIO_3 as an oxidant. The crude yellow cake was precipitated from the resulting green solution of phosphoric acid as Na_2U_2O_7 and (NH_4)_2U_2O_7 and subsequently purified by TBP extraction (tributylphosphate) and hydrogen peroxide as UO_4.2H_2O. TBP purified product was dried and calcined to UO_3 whereas UO_4.2H-2O was dried and reduced to UO_3 by Na_2S_2O_3. Prior to precipitation of crude yellow cake, Fe in the phosphoric acid solution was precipitated using magnesia. Elemental analysis has shown that the ore ...

Phase equilibria of the Ba-Sm-Y-Cu-O system for coated conductor applications

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The complex phase relationships near the BaO-poor region of the quaternary Ba-Sm-Y-Cu-O oxide system prepared in pure air (pO2=22 kPa, 950 oC) and in 0.1% O2 (pO2=100 Pa, 810 oC) have been determined. This investigation also included the subsolidus compatibilities in ten subsystems (Ba-Sm-Y-O, Ba-Sm-Cu-O, Ba-Y-Cu-O, Sm-Y-Cu-O, Ba-Sm-O, Ba-Y-O, Ba-Cu-O, Sm-Y-O, Sm-Cu-O, and Y-Cu-O), and the homogeneity range of five solid solutions (Ba(SmxY2-x)CuO5, (Sm,Y)2O3, (Sm,Y)2CuO4, (Y,Sm)2Cu2O5, and Ba(Sm,Y)2O4). The single phase range of the superconductor solid solution, (Ba2-xSmx)(Sm1-yYy)Cu3O6+z, and the phase compatibilities in its vicinity, which are particularly important for processing, are described in detail. The phase equilibrium data of the Ba-Sm-Y-Cu-O system will enable the improvement of the intrinsic superconducting properties of second-generation wires, and facilitate the flux-pinning process. -- Graphical Abstract: Phase diagram ...

The EIB and the financing of renewable energy sources; La BEI et le financement des energies renouvelables

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

As a financial institution o the European Union, The European Investment Bank is working and to add substance to the commitments made by the Union and its Member States at Kyoto and subsequently at Johannesburg. Over the last two years, renewable energy sources have attracted funding of more than 1.1 billion from the bank, equivalent to 14% of the total loans granted to the energy sector 7.8 billion), compared to an average o 7.9 % over the previous five years. In order to obviate the detrimental characteristics presented by these investments from a financial viewpoint, in March, 2004 the bank set up a 'CCFF' (Climate Change Financing Facility) of 500 million. Additionally, along with the other financial institutions, the EIB is looking into he possibility of supporting the establishment of European carbon credit trading hubs. Where the economic assessment of these projects is concerned, the bank has decided to take account of ...

Extraction-spectrophotometric determination of terbium in its mixture with lanthanum

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

A spectrophotometric study of the extraction with isobutanol of rare-earth elements in the form of complexes with quinoilizarin and N-benzene-N-phenylhydroxylamine has been made. The purpose of the study is to find out whether this reaction can be used in determining the concentration of elements in the presence of other rare-earth elements. In determining the relationship between the pH and light absorption the pH of the solution is measured after the extraction. The extraction of complexes begins at pH approximately 4 and reaches a maximum at pH7-8 (for La) and pH6-9 (for Er). The complexes underge decomposition when pH of the solution increased. The composition of complex compounds is determined by spectrophotometric methods for isomolar series, molar ratios and from the slope of logarithmic plots. Under optimal conditions (pH7.5) aAd at the measured ratio of the component for each ion of rare-earth elements, the molar extinction coefficients are determined for complexes in ...

Elastic recoil detection analysis of ferroelectric films

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

There has been considerable progress in developing SrBi{sub 2}Ta{sub 2}O{sub 9} (SBT) and Ba{sub O.7}Sr{sub O.3}TiO{sub 3} (BST) ferroelectric films for use as nonvolatile memory chips and for capacitors in dynamic random access memories (DRAMs). Ferroelectric materials have a very large dielectric constant ( {approx} 1000), approximately one hundred times greater than that of silicon dioxide. Devices made from these materials have been known to experience breakdown after a repeated voltage pulsing. It has been suggested that this is related to stoichiometric changes within the material. To accurately characterise these materials Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (ERDA) is being developed. This technique employs a high energy heavy ion beam to eject nuclei from the target and uses a time of flight and energy dispersive (ToF-E) detector telescope to detect these nuclei. The recoil nuclei carry both energy and mass information which enables the ...
