A proposal for prevention of acute radiation hazard and social panic regarding orphan sources in Japan

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

To respond to an increase of social problems concerning orphan sources in Japan, a working group was formed in the Japan Health Physics Society. In this working group, we investigated how to prevent acute radiation hazard or social panic regarding orphan sources in scrap metal and detection system for orphan sources brought into scrap yards before recycle. For detection system in a scrap yard we conducted an experiment on detectability of monitoring instrument using a radiation source mixed in scrap metal on a truck. The result showed that it was not easy to detect even a high-level source if it was shielded by scrap metal. We also estimated detection limits for radioactive materials in scrap metal by calculation that was validated with experimental data. We summarized present status about orphan sources in Japan and proposed a categorization of orphan sources according to dose rates to deal with unknown sources in a scrap ...

Reduction of exhaust pollutants from a direct-injection diesel engine using oxygenated fuels. Fumigation of oxygenates and addition of oxygenated additives to fuel; Gansanso nenryo ni yoru chokusetsu funshashiki diesel kikan no haiki joka. Gansanso nenryo no kyukikan eno hojo funsha to keiyu eno tenka

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The effects on engine emissions resulting from the intake manifold fumigation of oxygenated fuel and the addition of oxygenates to the fuel have been investigated using a direct-injection diesel engine. The results show that carefully selected oxygenated fuels effectively work to increase the ignition delay because of their low ignition quality and to decrease the combustion temperature due to the low compression gas temperature produced from their large heat of vaporization, thereby reducing levels of Bosch smoke and nitrogen oxides simultaneously. However, supplementary injection of the oxygenates into the intake air causes a drastic increase in the levels of exhaust total hydrocarbons and CO; thus, it can be said that the addition of oxygenates to the fuel is more practical and effective than fumigation if phase separation of the blended fuel may not be occurred. In the case of addition of the oxygenates to the fuel, it is clarified that smoke is directly related to the oxygen ...

Antioxidant treatment with quercetin ameliorates erectile dysfunction in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

Science.gov (United States)

Oxidative stress is demonstrated to be involved in the pathophysiological mechanism of erectile dysfunction (ED). Quercetin, a potent bioflavonoid, has been reported to have the antioxidant role. In the present study, we examined the effect of quercetin on ED and oxidative stress in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats with a single intravenous injection of STZ. The diabetic rats were then randomized to diabetic group and quercetin therapy groups which were treated with quercetin at different doses of 5, 20 and 50mg/kg per day respectively. At the end of the 8th week, erectile function was assessed by measuring the rise in intracavernous pressure (ICP) following cavernous nerve electrostimulation. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, thiobarbituric acid-reacting substance (TBARS) and nitrite and nitrate (NOx) levels were measured in cavernosum tissue. Endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) expression was determined using ...

Toward finding an optimal stockpile geometry to reduce dust emissions

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Fugitive dust emissions from stockpiles in the open storage yards of industrial zones and the subsequent atmospheric dust dispersion have brought about many ecological and economical problems. This paper introduces a new approach to reduce pollutant emissions by simply changing pile configuration and without affecting the operational activity on these parks. Flow around piles of different geometries and for various wind conditions was studied using previously validated Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations. Different pile height scenarios were investigated corresponding to a constant material volume and a fixed angle of repose under various wind magnitudes. The results obtained were integrated in order to evaluate the rate of dust emissions for the various configurations considered. It was found that, for the range of wind conditions and pile dimensions tested, an optimal geometry exists which corresponds to the lower emissions rate. 13 refs., 2 figs., 2 ...

Electricity usage in the sugar industry: Opportunities for reducing the demand. Proceedings. Moeglichkeiten der Elektroenergie-Einsparung in der Zuckerindustrie. VDZ-Tagungsbericht

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The use of thermal energy in the West German sugar industry has fallen by nearly half in the last twenty years. At the same time, automation and new technologies have led to an increase in the consumption of electric energy. In many cases, the equilibrium of combined heat and power has been upset. That equilibrium is, however, a fundamental precondition of the economical energy management of a sugar factory. Electrical engineers and sugar technologists have looked at the situation in the sugar industry form different points of view and have presented interesting ideas - in some instances already put into practice - to solve the problem. Examination of the electricity consumption of alternative processes, systems and pieces of equipment used in sugar manufacturing, from the beet yard to the sugar house, has revealed marked differences and considerable potential savings. Bilateral primary breast neuroendocrine carcinoma in a young woman: Report of a case

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

Bilateral breast carcinoma accounts for approximately 5% of all patients with breast cancer, while neuroendocrine breast carcinomas comprise less than 5% of invasive breast carcinomas. In addition, most patients with breast neuroendocrine carcinomas are older. Therefore, bilateral primary breast neuroendocrine carcinoma at a young age is extremely rare. We herein report bilateral neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast in a 29-year-old woman who underwent bilateral lumpectomy with the initial symptom of bilateral nipple discharge. Grossly, the lesions in both breasts were masses with infinite margins. Histologically, this case was consistent with primary neuroendocrine carcinoma arising in bilateral breasts. Cells from both breast tumors were positive for chromogranin A, neuron-specific eno...

Study on the measurement method of diffusion coefficient for radon in the soil. 6

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The aim of this study is to clarify the radon behavior in the soil at the waste rock yards of uranium mine. We have developed an apparatus for measuring radon diffusion coefficient in soil under the control of soil temperature. The radon diffusion coefficients changed suddenly around the soil temperature of 0degC. The radon diffusion coefficients in dry soil have little temperature dependency, and were comparable coefficients obtained by empirical formula of Rogers and Nielson. To study the restraint effect of radon exhalation by covering with bentonite on soil, we carried out the measurements and the calculations by using one-dimensional transport model of atmosphere and soil. The decrease of radon exhalation rate was 2.9 Bq m"-"2s"-"1 when soil covered with the bentonite of 5 cm thick. The radon concentrations in snow cover and the radon flux from the snow surface were measured at the waste rock yard in Ningyo-toge Environmental Engineering ...

Overview of the 1995 NATO ARW on nuclear submarine decommissioning and related problems

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Nuclear Submarine Decommissioning and Related Problems was held in Moscow June 19--22, 1995. It was preceded by a visit to the Zvezdotchka Shipyard at Severodvinsk, a repair and maintenance yard for Russian nuclear submarines, for a subgroup of the workshop attendees. Most of the material in this paper is drawn directly form the workshop proceedings. Slightly less than 500 nuclear ships and submarines (the vast majority are submarines) have been constructed by the countries with nuclear navies. This includes approximately 250 by Russia, 195 by the United States, 23 by the United Kingdom, 11 by France and 6 by China. By the year 2000 it is expected that approximately one-half of these nuclear vessels will be removed from service and in various states of decommissioning. A newspaper account in June 1997 indicated that 156 Russian nuclear submarines had been removed from service. In August 1996 it was reported that 55 reactor ...

Compost amendment of Cu-Zn minespoil reduces toxic bioavailable heavy metal concentrations and promotes establishment and biomass production of Bromus carinatus (Hook and Arn.)

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

A series of lab and greenhouse studies were undertaken to understand how Cu and Zn toxicity influences Bromus carinatus (Hook and Arn.) growth, to what degree an organic amendment (yard waste compost) may reduce Cu and Zn bioavailability in Cu-Zn minespoil and promote plant growth in combination with fertilizer, and how the vertical distribution of compost in the minespoil influences rooting depth. Root Cu and Zn toxicity thresholds were determined to be 1 mg L"-"1 and 10 mg L"-"1 in solution, respectively. The compost amendment had exceptionally high Cu and Zn binding capacities (0.17 and 0.08 g metal g C"-"1, for Cu and Zn, respectively) that were attributed to high compost humic and fulvic acid concentrations. Maximum plant biomass was achieved when minespoil was amended with compost and fertilizer in combination. Fertilizer alone had no effect on plant growth. Mixing compost into the minespoil was essential to promote adequate rooting depth. - Organic amendment ...

BARBOX: An alternative system concept for floating production, storage, and offloading

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

This paper describes the Brown and Root`s BARBOX, an alternative, purpose-built, deep-draft monohull system for floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO). This alternative system concept has been designed for worldwide applications including the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico environments. The stiffened flat plate construction of the BARBOX gives it a low capital investment cost relative to minimum water plane hull types (e.g., semi-submersible, SPAR, TLP) and ship-shaped FPSO. Dynamic motion comparison between the BARBOX and the ship-shaped FPSO indicates that the BARBOX`s motion characteristics are similar or better than those of comparable ship-shaped FPSO configurations. This paper also considers construction of the BARBOX hull in the Gulf of Mexico region. A recent study indicated that the Gulf coast fabrication yards were technically capable to fabricate the BARBOX hull and they could be cost competitive against worldwide shipyards.

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Experimental investigations are being conducted on a single-cylinder direct-injection diesel engine to examine the effects of combustion chamber specifications and swirl ratios on the heat release and transient heat transfer characteristics. Heat rejection was examined on the basis of heat release calculations using cylinder pressure time histories. Transient surface temperature data obtained from stationary locations in the piston and cylinder head were used as the basis for determining the transient heat flux rates. The results showed good agreement with the heat rejection calculated from cylinder pressure data and that transient heat flux in a piston cavity was reduced with the larger cavity diameter and a higher swirl ratio. On the other hand, a transient heat flux in a piston head was not changed by the cavity diameter and swirl ratio. 5 refs., 19 figs.

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Pretreatment of brown coal in oil was conducted using 1-methyl naphthalene or mixture of tetralin and 1-methyl naphthalene as solvent at temperatures ranging from 300 to 430{degree}C under nitrogen atmosphere. Effects of the solvent properties on the structural change of oxygen-functional groups (OFG) and coal liquefaction were investigated by means of quantitative analysis of OFG and solid state {sup 13}C-NMR measurement. When hydrogen transfer from solvent was insufficient, it was suggested that brown coal molecules loose their hydrogen to be aromatized. While, at lower temperatures ranging from 300 to 350{degree}C, hydrogen contained in brown coal molecules was consumed for the stabilization of pyrolytic radicals, and the deterioration of liquefaction was not observed. When hydrogen transfer from solvent was insufficient at higher temperatures above 400{degree}C in nitrogen atmosphere during pretreatment in oil, crosslinking like benzofuran type was formed by dehydration ...

Reliability engineering in aerospace technology. Approach to the assurance of high reliability; Eisei uchu rocket no shinraisei. Koshinraisei eno torikumi

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

This paper describes an approach to the reliability engineering in aerospace technology. To promote development, configuration management (clarifies the base line of technology), reliability management, quality control, safety management, progress management, and cost management are very important. The following example related to reliability was contained for the development of an N-1 rocket in Japan. A timer and amplifier that are old-fashioned but have actual results were supplied from abroad. The induction system that was purchased from abroad contained faulty components in quality control. The improvement in reliability has priority and the first-stage tank was changed to a home-made aluminum alloy that is superior in stress-resistant corrosiveness. An H-II rocket was completely developed in Japan by self-technology. The number of faults to be generated in the H-II rocket decreases as compared with the N-1 rocket. In the combustion test of an H-II rocket`s first-stage main engine, ...

How to apply the uncertainties in estimating the vertical resistance of piles to limit state design; Kui no shijiryoku suitei ni okeru jikakujitsusei to genkai jotai sekkeiho eno tekiyo

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

This paper describes effects of methods to calculate and analyze bearing capacities and transformation of pile foundations in the limit state design method. Different pile bearing capacity estimating expressions including criteria used in other countries were applied to the case of steel piles driven into the `diatomaceous mudstone ground` in Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture where detailed ground and soil surveys have been made, and the case of piles driven in place into the `sandy and clayish soil alternating ground layers` at the Tennoji area in Osaka Prefecture. The results were compared with those of static loading tests. As a result, the estimated bearing capacity limit was found to agree relatively well with the measured values where uniaxial compression strength was used according to the reference architectural formula. The estimated bearing capacity limit using the N-value as the soil constant has underestimated the bearing capacity irrespective of whichever methods in the ...

Conversion of char nitrogen to N2 under incomplete combustion conditions; Fukanzen nensho jokenka ni okeru char chuchisso no N2 eno tenka

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The effect of combustion conditions on conversion of char nitrogen to N2 was studied in the combustion experiment of char obtained by pyrolysis of coal. Char specimen was prepared by holding ZN coal of Chinese lignite in Ar atmosphere at 1123K for one hour. A batch scale quartz-made fluidized bed reactor was used for combustion experiment. After the specimen was fluidized in reaction gas, it was rapidly heated to start combustion reaction. CO, CO2 and N2 in produced gases were online measured by gas chromatography (GC). As the experimental result, under the incomplete combustion condition where a large amount of CO was produced by consuming almost all of O2, no NOx and N2O produced from char were found, and almost all of N-containing gas was N2. At the final stage of combustion, pyridinic-N disappeared completely, and pyrrolic-N decreased, while O-containing nitrogen complexes became a main component. It was thus suggested that O-containing nitrogen complexes are playing the role of ...

Results of the remote sensing feasibility study for the uranium hexafluoride storage cylinder yard program

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The US DOE manages the safe storage of approximately 650,000 tons of depleted uranium hexafluoride remaining from the Cold War. This slightly radioactive, but chemically active, material is contained in more than 46,000 steel storage cylinders that are located at Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Paducah, Kentucky; and Portsmouth, Ohio. Some of the cylinders are more than 40 years old, and approximately 17,500 are considered problem cylinders because their physical integrity is questionable. These cylinders require an annual visual inspection. The remainder of the 46,000-plus cylinders must be visually inspected every four years. Currently, the cylinder inspection program is extremely labor intensive. Because these inspections are accomplished visually, they may not be effective in the early detection of leaking cylinders. The inspection program requires approximately 12--14 full-time-equivalent (FTE) employees. At the cost of approximately $125K per FTE, this translates to $1,500K per annum just ...

Demonstration of realtime radiography on pipeline girth welds: Final report

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Conventional radiography has been the accepted nondestructive testing (NDT) method used for many years to either ''accent'' or ''reject'' a field weld in the pipeline industry. However, conventional radiography requires the expense of film, developing chemicals, and manpower for film development. It also normally has a delay of 2 hours or more between when the weld was radiographed and when the radiographic film of the weld is available for interpretation. Over the last few years, a newer approach to performing radiographic testing, called ''realtime'' radiography, has been used in several different types of field inspection operations. The realtime radiography system forms the image with optical imaging in lieu of photographic film. Objectives of this project were: (Task 1) Integration of realtime x-ray system components into a realtime-radiographic imaging (RTRI) system for ...

Sorption mechanism of solvent vapors to coals; Sekitan eno yobai joki no shuchaku kiko no kaiseki

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

With an objective to clarify the interactions between micropore structure of coal and solvent reagents, a sorption experiment was carried out under solvent saturated vapor pressure. Low-volatile bituminous coal, Pocahontas No. 3 coal, has the aromatic ring structure developed, and makes solvent more difficult to diffuse into coal, hence sorption amount is small. Methanol has permeated since its polarity is high. High-volatile bituminous coal, Illinois No. 6 coal, makes solvent penetrate easily, and the sorption amount was large with both of aromatic and polar solvents. Since brown coal, Beulah Zap coal, contains a large amount of oxygen, and hydrogen bonding is predominant, sorption amount of cyclohexane and benzene having no polarity is small. Methanol diffuses while releasing hydrogen bond due to its polarity, and its sorption amount is large. A double sorption model is available, which expresses the whole sorption amount as a sum of physical sorption amount and amount of permeation ...

Koki niso shototsu funryu no yodomiten kinbo ni okeru dennetsu sokushin kiko. 1. ; Ryushi eno chokusetsu sesshoku netsuido ni yoru dennetsu sokushin koka no bunri hoho

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Several heat transfer augmentation mechanisms contribute to the heat transfer augmentation around the stagnation point in the gas-solid two-phase impinging jet flow. Among those contributions, that of heat exchange was numerically analyzed and characteristically elucidated by the unsteady direct contact heat conduction at the time of impingement between the laden particles and heat transfer surface. In other words, if the contact time is short between the particles and heat transfer surface, the former is heated by heat stored in the latter as a heat capacity. In such a region, the heat quantity to be transferred to the particles changes by not only the thermal property value (heat capacity multiplied by heat conduction coefficient) of particles but also that of heat transfer surface. Then by using several kinds of particles and heat transfer surface, different in thermal property value, experimental measurement was planned of heat transfer augmentations, different in contribution of ...

The passive films formed in stainless steels are thin and fine oxide films, a high corrosion resistance can be provided by these films. This study formed SiO2 protective coating on the substrate of SUS 304 stainless steels by chemical vapor deposition using TEOS-O3 system. Firstly, relations of substrate temperature and deposition rate of films, chemical composition, refractive index of films were investigated. Then, the corrosion resistance of SUS 304 stainless steels coated SiO2 films was examined by activation time and an anodic polarization curve in 1 kmol[center dot]m[sup -3] HCl solution. The results were obtained as follows. Thickness of SiO2 films linearly increases with time at the deposition temperature of 473 to 673 K. Si-OH bonds would disappear above the deposition temperature of 573 K, almost perfect SiO2 films were obtained. The activation time in 1 kmol[center dot]m[sup -3] HCl solution increased with increase of thickness of SiO2 films. 21 refs., 11 figs., 1 tab.

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5} thin films were formed on aluminum foils by a sol-gel process in order to increase the capacitance of the aluminum foils which are used as aluminum electrolytic capacitors. Investigations focussed on the preparation and characterization of the coating solution, the formation of Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5} thin films on aluminum foils, and the heat treatment and anodization of the films. The phase transition and electrical properties, such as capacitance, leakage current, and withstand voltage of the Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5} thin films were also measured. The Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5} thin films annealed at temperatures below 550 degree C were found to be amorphous, but they were crystallized to the orthorhombic phase by annealing at temperatures higher than 580 degree C. The capacitance of the coated samples increased with an increase in the thickness of the formed Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5} thin films, but an increase in leakage current and a decrease in withstand voltage were also observed in those ...

FY 1997 report on the survey of potential impacts of enlarging ASEAN on political and economic systems in South East Asia; 1997 nendo chosa hokokusho (ASEAN kakudai no Higashi Asia no seiji keizai chitsujo eno eikyo chosa)

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

This report surveys potential impacts of ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) on inter-ASEAN affairs and its external relations when ASEAN will enlarge its members to include all nations in South East Asia, and thus fully represent the region. For this purpose, the survey was conducted on Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, which joined in 1995, from the viewpoint of their economic and political system, and their relations with other member countries. The nature of ASEAN has gradually transformed, in which all the countries in the region have increased and internal economic issues have been tackled. It has an aim to stimulate inter-ASEAN trade and induce foreign direct investment into ASEAN as a whole by reducing import duties on intra-ASEAN trade. Underlying in these, new development is a concern about growing economic and military power of China. ASEAN solidarity will work an leverage against China should change toward worse, and ASEAN will function as a regional ...

Electrochemical and chemical dissolution behavior of Zn-Fe alloy coatings and its application to the analysis of Zn-Fe alloy layer. Zn-Fe kei mekki so no bunkyokuter dot yokai kyodo to teiryo bunseki eno oyo

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

As surface treated steel sheets, steel sheets with Zn-Fe coatings as well as double-layer steel sheets with Fe-P alloy coatings on Zn-Fe alloy coatings are often used practically. Two treatment methods, which are used to dissolve only alloy layers without dissolving steel sheets in order to find amount and composition of alloy layersr have already been reported. This report investigates the mechanisms of these methods, particularly the mechanisms to control dissolution of steel sheets. In the alkali-dissolution method, Zn-Fe alloy coatings are dissolved in a strong alkaline solution(NaOH-triethanolamine (TEA)-H{sub 2}O{sub 2}). In this case, steel sheets are insoluble because passive films are formed on the surface. In the cathodic polarization electrolysis method, alloy layers are electrolyzed({minus}l.2V) and dissolved in an ammonium nitrate-0-phen electrolyte. At this potential, dissolution of steel sheets can be prevented by the 0-phen films adsorbed on the surface. Consequently, ...

Effects of powder particle size on thermoelectric properties of n- and P-Bi2Te3; N- oyobi P-Bi2Te3 no netsuden tokusei eno funmatsu ryudo no eikyo

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The effect of powder particle sizes of n- and p-Bi2Te3 on the thermoelectric properties has been studied. The powder was formed from the each ingot and sieve into <63, 63-90 and 90-150{mu}m for p-type, and <355 and >355 {mu}m for n-type. Those powders are pressed followed by CIP, then sinterd at 773K for S. Effects of CIP on the densities were not so large such as 1-4% depending on the powder sizes. The Setback coefficients and electric conductivities for p-type were 110{mu}V/K and 0.8{times}10{sup 2}ohm{sup -1}m{sup -1} at 333K, while 18O{mu}V/K and 2.0{times}10{sup 4}ohm{sup -1}m{sup -l} for n-type, respectively. The thermal conductivity for n-type was 0.7W/mK leading to the figure of merit of 2.1{times}10{sup -3}(/K). The hybrid texture of the suitable amount of smaller and larger grains has a possibility of an improvement for thermoelectric properties. 10 refs., 5 figs., 5 tabs.

Corrosion resistance of Al sub 2 O sub 3 -C brick for in-bath smelting reduciton furnace. ; Laboratory study on application to post combustion zone. Tetsuyokushiki yoyu kangenroyo Al sub 2 O sub 3 -C renga no taishokusei. ; Niji nenshobu eno tekiyo ni kansuru jikkenshitsuteki kento

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The influence of (%MgO) and (%T.Fe) in slug on the corrosion resistance of Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}-C brick was studied at 1,550-1,800{degree}C to apply it to the post combustion zone of an in-bath smelting reduction furnace. The wear rate of the brick was affected strongly by temperature decreasing to 1 2-2 3 for every temperature reduction of 100{degree}C, and it was also more affected by (%T.Fe) than (%MgO) in slug at every temperature. The observation of brick microstructures by reflecting microscopy revealed the preceding wear of a carbon matrix. Based on the consideration that the growth of degraded structures by decarburization also contributes to movement of Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} clinkers, the wear rate equation of the Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}-C brick was derived taking into account not only elution of Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} clinkers into slug but oxidation and decarburization of the carbon matrix in oxidation atmosphere at high temperature, resulting in the good agreement between calculated and ...
