A wind turbine is provided which consists of novel vanes horizontally oriented about a rotating hub connected to a vertical shaft. The vanes are free to pivot about two horizontal hinges such that two vanes connected to each other open when wind force is applied, and close when there is little or no wind force such that there is a minimal amount of resistance to the travel of the vanes when the vanes are against the wind.

A study of turbulent heat transfer in the subchannel by the large scale secondary vortex flow
International Nuclear Information System (INIS)
Experimental and computational studies were performed to confirm the enhancement of turbulent heat transfer performance in the 6x6 simulated rod bundle subchannel by generating the large scale secondary vortex flow. Experimental studies were carried out at Reynolds Number 10,000 with atmospheric condition. Axial variations of mean velocity and turbulent intensity in the rod bundle subchannel were measured by the 2-color LDV measurement system. Computational works were accomplished using the commercial CFD code, FLUENT. Normal operating condition of Uljin 3, 4 nuclear power plant is used in computation works as an initial condition. The LSSVF mixing vanes generate the most strong secondary flow vortices that maintain about 35 D_H after the spacer grid. The LSSVF mixing vane influences strongly to flow mixing in adjacent subchannels because large scale stream wise vortices in subchannel sustain two times more than that in subchannel with split ...

Wind or water driven wheel and bird scarer
Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)
The wind unit working wheel has 4 radial rectangular frames arranged in two vertical planes which are perpendicular to each other. In the planes limited by the frames, on loop hinges with limiting supports, there are flat blades. When the working wheel rotates under the influence of wind pressure, the blades automatically occupy a vertical or horizontal (wind vane) position depending on the direction of blade motion and the direction of wind velocity.

Spacer grid effects on post-CHF heat transfer in an annulus geometry
Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)
The term 'Post-CHF' was generally used in the two-phase flow regime in tube flow occurring downstream of the CHF. It has various other names such as dispersed flow, liquid-deficient flow, mist flow and film boiling because the two-phase regime is characterized by a continuous vapor phase with discrete liquid drops and a non-wetted heated surface. The regime has been adopted in a lot of applications including nuclear power plants, fossil power plants, steam generators, refrigeration systems and spray cooling, In particular, this regime has a considerable importance in the areas of light water reactor(LWR) accident analysis (off-normal operating conditions) and design in heat exchangers operating in the once-through mode where subcooled liquid enters the exchanger and superheated vapor exits. Recently, innovative PWRs adopt very high power density increases and so require increased safety margins. For instance, advanced PWRs would be going to use a new-type of spacer ...

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)
The third regular inspection of No.2 plant in Sendai Nuclear Power Station was carried out from December 27, 1988 to May 25, 1989. The parallel operation was resumed on April 28, 1989, 123 days after the parallel off. The facilities which were the object of inspection were the reactor proper, reactor cooling system, measurement and control system, fuel facilities, radiation control facilities, waste facilities, reactor containment installation and emergency electric power generation system. On the facilities which were the object of inspection, the appearance, disassembling, leak, function, performance and other inspections were carried out. As the results, significant in indication was observed in 8 bolts for fixing the flow-changing vanes of primary coolant pumps, and broken valve spindles were found, but other abnormality was not found. The works related to this regular inspection were accomplished within the range of the limit of radiation dose equivalent based ...

Part-load analysis of a chemical looping combustion (CLC) combined cycle with CO2 capture
International Nuclear Information System (INIS)
This paper presents part-load evaluation of a natural gas-fired chemical looping combustion (CLC) combined cycle with CO2 capture. The novel combined cycle employs an air-based gas turbine, a CO2-turbine and a steam turbine cycle. In this combined cycle, the CLC reactors replace combustion chamber of the gas turbine. The proposed combined cycle has a net plant efficiency of about 52.2% at full-load, including CO2 compression to 200 bar. The part-load evaluation shows that reducing the load down to 60% results in an efficiency drop of 2.6%-points. However, the plant shows better relative part-load efficiency compared to conventional combined cycles. The pressure in CLC-reduction and -oxidation reactors is balanced by airflow control, using a compressor equipped with variable guide vanes. A combination of control strategies is discussed for plant start-up and shutdown and for part-load when airflow reduction is not practically possible with current generation of ...

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)
A wind turbine is disclosed which permits high energy production over a wide range of wind forces while being protected against climatic hazards. According to the invention, a mast supports an energy recuperator comprising vane-type rotors by means of a frame which is orientable around a vertical axis. An energy conversion device is connected to the recuperator in order to be driven in rotation by the recuperator. The frame is responsive to the aerodynamic force exerted on the recuperator with respect to the mast and to the ground so as to optimize the power collected by the machine. The frame comprises a turret pivoted to the mast about the vertical axis and a structure pivoted to the turret about a horizontal axis of tilting motion. A balance weight maintains the recuperator in the top position when there is no wind. The aerodynamic drag of the recuperator acts in the opposite direction. In consequence, in the event of a high wind, the recuperator moves down ...

PDIM - multifunction regulator; PDIM - Die integrierte Druckreduzier- und Messanlage fuer Gas
Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)
The PDIM multifunction regulator offers in one single unit the basic functions filtering, slamshut safety valve, pressure reduction and a gas flow straightening vane. This concept formulated by the engineer J.-P. Cornil is a Gaz de France patent. Developed and manufactured by a French industrial company it incorporates some astute innovations in the field of fluid dynamics. Its technical caracteristics make a significant step forward in gas technology. Since the first unit was brought into service over 1000 PDIM units have been built and incorporated in gas regulating and metering stations for transport, distribution and industrial applications. The very compact nature of the PDIM enhanced by its direct bolting to a turbine or other type of gas meter leads to small size stations allowing lower cost projects and making it easier to set in populated or architecturally significant areas. Heat Transfer Enhancement of Nanofluid in Natural Convection of an Enclosure Heated from Below
Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)
The general strategy for improving the safety of nuclear power plant and its economics is to accomplish power uprates while securing sufficient thermalhydraulic margin. In order to succeed this strategy, there have been a lot of efforts in increasing the margin through the enhancement of heat transfer capability in coolants. However, despite their efforts, only about 10 {approx} 15 % increase of the thermal margin is possible by using the best art known well up to now with installation of mechanical engineering devices such as mixing vane or button to generating the swirl flow and turbulent mixing. The limit of the capability of the best technique has made a lot of engineers to be frustrated to do the power uprates. Nevertheless, fortunately a new innovative idea is being proposed in heat transfer community as an engineering colloidal fluid to basically change the original properties of the coolant. The fluid began to be called by Choi as a nanofluid which is a ...

Decontamination of the reactor coolant pump in Maanshan nuclear power plant
International Nuclear Information System (INIS)
To reduce the radiation dose that accumulated on the reactor coolant pump, decontamination work was carried out at the Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant. A four-step alkaline permanganate (AP)-CanDecon process was applied to remove the activity on the turning vane diffuser and pump impeller. The first step consisted of 8 h of AP treatment and 7 h of decontamination. It was followed by 2.5 h of AP treatment and 5 h of decontamination. An average decontamination factor of 2.9 was obtained. To understand the corrosion of the decontaminating reagents on the materials, coupons were installed in the decontamination tank. These were as-received and sensitized 304SS, alloy 600, casting stainless steel (CF-8), stellite-6, and carbon steels (A508 and A533). The exposure rates (mR h"-"1) of the carbon steels were approximately five times higher in magnitude than those of the other materials. The decontamination levels (dpm per 100 cm"2) of the A508 and A533 carbon steels were 5432 ...
