The role of plasma potential in d.c. glow discharge conditions in nitriding process of EJ961 steel

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Results of researches on nitriding process of EJ961 steel are presented in this work. This steel was subjected to nitriding both on the cathode and on the isolated from cathode and anode substrate, that is at so called potential of glow discharged plasma. Nitriding processes were performed using device for glow discharge treatments with cooled anode. (author)

Secondary side concept to prevent steam generator tube corrosion

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Some examples are given of design adaptations, e.g. U-bend support, tube spacer grid, flow distribution baffle, triangular tube pitch, tube-tubeplate sheet connection, which reduce the tendency to various types of corrosion (stress corrosion cracking, tube denting, tube wastage, intergranular cracking). A basic diagram of the secondary circuit is shown. Oxygen, corrosion product and impurity control in the secondary circuit is described. (E.J.). 19 figs., 6 refs.

Effect of secondary circuit materials and water regime on steam generator reliability

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The mechanism of the salt concentration increase in pits and crevices formed in a steam generator due to its imperfect manufacture or to its design features is described. The probability of corrosion can be reduced by choosing a suitable steel and by securing low concentrations of salts (chlorides in particular) and corrosion products in the feedwater. Attention is paid to the distribution of salts in the water-steam circuit and to the conditions of erosion corrosion as the principal source of corrosion products in feedwater. Experience with the suppression of erosion corrosion at nuclear power plants abroad is described. (E.J.).

Transformation and radiosensitivity of human diploid skin fibroblasts transfected with activated RAS oncogene and SV40 T-antigen

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Three normal human diploid cell strains were transfected with an activated Ha-ras oncogene (EJ ras) or SV40 T-antigen. Multiple clones were examined for morphological alterations, growth requirements, ability to grow under anchorage independent conditions, immortality and tumorigenicity in nude mice. Clones expressing SV40 T-antigen alone or in combination with ras protein p21 were significantly radioresistant as compared with their parent cells or clones transfected with the neo gene only. This radioresistant phenotype persisted in post-crisis, immortalized cell lines. These data suggest that expression of the SV40 T-antigen but not activated Ha-ras plays an important role in the radiosensitivity of human diploid cells. The radioresistant phenotype in SV40 T transfected cells was not related to the enhanced level of genetic instability seen in pre-crisis and newly immortalized cells, nor to the process of immortalization itself. Radioanalytical methods of rare earth element determination

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and radionuclide X-ray fluorescence analysis (RXFA) were used for the determination of rare earth elements. For INAA, solution obtained by sample decomposition was dripped onto filter paper, enclosed and sealed into a polyethylene foil. The sample was activated in reactor WWR-S over a period of 4 to 6 hours with a neutron fluence of 10"1"3cm"-"2. Gamma radiation measurement was carried out with a planar and a coaxial HP-Ge detector in three decay periods. La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Tm, Yb and Lu were determined. The advantage of the method is its accuracy and high sensitivity, the disadvantage is the time-consuming analysis. The RXFA method was used as a rapid and operative method for the analysis of loose ore samples, aqueous and organic solutions of rare earth elements. For exciting X-ray radiation, "2"4"1Am was used and the radiation of K-lines was detected with a planar Si(Li) detector. For elements beyond Dy a "1"0"9Cd ...
