Petrography, geochemistry and regional significance of crystalline klippen in the Garhwal Lesser Himalaya, India

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

Uphalda gneisses (UG) is a crystalline klippe located near Srinagar in Garhwal Himalaya. These gneisses are compared with Debguru porphyroids (DP) (?Ramgarh group) of Garhwal?Kumaun Himalaya and Baragaon mylonitic gneisses (BMG) of Himachal Himalaya. Petrographic study reveals that the deformation of UG was initiated at higher temperature (above 350?C) and continued till lowering of temperature and deformation led to the mylonitization. Geochemically, these granitic gneisses (UG, DP and BMG) exhibit similar composition. Features such as high molecular A/CNK value (>1), presence of normative corundum and absence of normative diopside, enhanced Rb/Sr, Rb/Zr ratios, enrichment of Th and containing rounded zircons support their crustally-derived S-type granitic nature. The linear plot in major...

Photochemically and Pharmacological studies of Maytenus Frosskaoliana

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Column chromatography of the petroleum ether and chloroformic extracts of Maytenus Forsskaoliana afforded four compounds: friedilin1, B-amyrin 2, B-sitosterol 3 and betulin 4. The structure of these compounds were established on bases of spectral (IR,MS,H and C-NMR)as well as physical data. Antimicrobial activity for extracts indicated weak potency (200ug/ml) while betulin4 showed a pronounced activity (MIC and MBC 20ug/ml).The cytotoxic activity of beutalin4 significantly indicated promising activity (IC50 40ug/ml) on both HeLa and Hep-2 cells. The pharmacological activity of diferent extracts showed sedative effect, slowing respiration, dose -dependent decrease in the arterial blood pressure by 40.1mm Hg (at adose 200mg /kg),decrease in the heart rate 67.3% (at a dose 50mg /kg)and decrease in the body temperature by 4.2C after 2 hrs (at a dose 200mg /kg). Studies on the biosorption of uranium by a thermotolerant, ethanol-producing strain of Kluyveromyces marxianus

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The ability of residual biomass from the thermotolerant ethanol-producing yeast strain Kluyveromyces marxianus IMB3 to function as a biosorbent for uranium has been examined. It was found that the biomass had an observed maximum biosorption capacity of 120 mg U/g dry weight of biomass. The calculated value for the biosorption maximum, obtained by fitting the data to the Langmuir model was found to be 130 mg U/g dry weight biomass. Maximum biosorption capacities were examined at a number of temperatures and both the observed and calculated values obtained for those capacities increased with increasing temperature. Decreasing the pH of the biosorbate solution resulted in a decrease in uptake capacity. When biosorption reactions were carried out using sea-water as the diluent it was found that the maximum biosorption capacity of the biomass increased significantly. Using transmission electron microscopy, uranium crystals were shown to be ...

Trace metals in tap water from Tehran, Iran

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

A total of 272 tap water samples were collected from 68 homes throughout the city of Tehran. Analysis for cadmium, zinc, lead, copper, arsenic, iron and manganese showed some accumulation of these metals in household piping overnight. However, the concentration of all metals was in the parts per billion (ug/l) range and well below international standards. Heavy metals in Tehran's drinking water therefore, do not pose a significant acute health hazard. 19 references, 2 tables.

New advances and applications in pulsed-plasma nitriding of gear and power train systems; Neue Erkenntnisse und Anwendungen der Puls-Plasma-Nitriertechnik im Bereich Getriebe- und Antriebstechnik

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Due to size and costs of big slewing rings, the common methods of experimental trial and error together with destructive test methods for verification of the inductive hardening process are limited. Thereby it is essential to simulate the hardening process in addition to the tests. With these simulations, it should be possible to get conclusions for the hardening pattern, the residual stress and distortion. With actually existing methods a fully three dimensional simulation is extremely time consuming. For that reason, a new method was developed that combines two dimensional with three dimensional simulation to shorten the time for calculation tremendously. (orig.)

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The knowledge shown in this work of the relationships between the oxidation stage of chromium, molybdenum and tungsten and their catalytic activity in some hydrocarbon reactions was achieved by the combination of separate investigations of reduction properties and the catalytic activity of the catalysts concerned. To characterize the electronic state of the reduced surfaces, X-ray photo-electronic spectroscopy was mainly used, supplemented by electron spin resonance. The catalyst activity was measured in conventional apparatus (flow, pulse and gradient-free reactors). (orig.) Limits on the Diffuse Radio and Hard X-ray Emission of Abell 2199

CERN Document Server

The Westerbork Northern Sky Survey (WENSS) and the NRAO/VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) were used to determine an upper limit to the diffuse radio flux from the nearby cluster Abell 2199. For the entire cluster, this limit is <3.25 Jy at 327 MHz from WENSS; for the inner 15' radius, the limit is <168 mJy at 1.4 GHz. These limits are used to constrain the cluster magnetic field by requiring that the radio flux be consistent with the hard X-ray (HXR) flux observed by BeppoSAX, assuming that the observed HXR excess is due to inverse Compton (IC) scattering of cosmic microwave background photons by relativistic electrons in the intracluster gas. We find that the magnetic field must be very weak (<0.073 uG) in order to avoid producing an observable radio halo. We also consider the possibility that the HXR excess is due to nonthermal bremsstrahlung (NTB) by a population of suprathermal electrons which are being accelerated to higher energies. We find that a NTB model ...

Experience with the OBD II functions from use in mass production, prospect for the further development of the diagnosis functions foe US applications; Erfahrungen mit den OBDII-Funktionen aus dem Serieneinsatz, Ausblick auf die Weiterentwicklung der Diagnosefunktionen fuer US-Anwendungen

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The required introduction of on board diagnosis II in the USA from the 94 models onward has led vehicle manufacturers and system suppliers to develop corresponding diagnosis processes at the beginning of the 1990`s. These systems are now in mass production for TLEV and partly for LEV requirements. Based on experience from the wide use of these functions, new knowledge has been obtained, which must be taken into account in the development of future systems. The additionally more severe emission and diagnosis requirements make further minimisation of the overall tolerances on the one hand, and a revision of the existing diagnosis algorithms necessary. In parallel with this, the Law must create the necessary outline conditions, where the requirements for the vehicle manufacturer and system suppliers must also be met. The OBD II development must therefore certainly not be regarded as complete. [Deutsch] Die in den USA ab Modelljahr `94 geforderte Einfuehrung der On Board Diagnose II hat zu ...

Agricultural ecosystem modelling. The basis for assessing the impact of possible land-use and climate changes. Final report; Agrooekosystemmodellierung. Grundlage fuer die Abschaetzung von Auswirkungen moeglicher Landnutzungs- und Klimaaenderungen. Abschlussbericht

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

This report presents the results of the BMBF-sponsored project Fundamentals and models for assessing the effect of climate changes on soil, plant development and the crops of an economically significant range of farm products. Its aim was to study, by means of the results obtained for winter wheat, the dependence of plant growth on temperature, radiation and water as well as nutrient supply for other economically important crop types. Building on this, process-oriented, climate-sensitive agricultural ecosystem models for winter rye, winter barley, sugar-beet and winter intercrops were developed, verified and, in some sites, validated. First scenario calculations served to demonstrate the climate sensitivity of these models. Species comparison of acute inhalation toxicity of ozone and phosgene

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

A comparison of the concentration-response effects of inhaled ozone (O/sub 3/) in different species of laboratory animals was made in order to better understand the influence of the choice of species in inhalation studies of this gas. The effect of 4-hour exposure to ozone (O/sub 3/) at concentrations of 0.0, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 ppm was determined in rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters and mice. Lavage fluid protein (LFP) accumulation 18 hr after exposure was used as the indicator of O/sub 3/-induced pulmonary edema. All species had similar basal levels of LFP (250-350 ug/ml) when a volume of saline which approximated the total lung capacity was used for lavage of the collapsed lungs. Exponential dose-response curves were seen in all species except guinea pigs, which showed significant increases in LFP at low O/sub 3/ concentrations (0.2 ppm) and a leveling off of response at the higher O/sub 3/ levels. Other species usually showed significant elevations in LFP ...

Immunological detection and quantification of DNA components structurally modified by alkylating carcinogens, mutagens and chemotherapeutic agents

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The detection and quantification of defined reaction products of chemical mutagens and carcinogens (and of many cancer chemotherapeutic agents) with DNA require highly sensitive analytical techniques. The exceptional capability of immunoglobulins to recognize subtle alterations of molecular structure (especially when monoclonal antibodies are used to maximize specificity), outstanding sensitivity of immunoanalysis by high-affinity antibodies, and the fact that radioactively-labelled agents are not required suggest the utility of a radioimmunoassay to recognize and quantitate alkylated DNA products. We have recently developed a set of high-affinity monoclonal antibodies (secreted by mouse x mouse as well as by rat x rat hybridomas; antibody affinity constants, 10"9 to > 10"1"0 lmol) specifically directed against several DNA alkylation products with possible relevance in relation to both mutagenesis and malignant transformation of mammalian cells. These alkylation products include ...

Title of paper: the induction of P-53 independent programmed cell death (apoptosis) with ionizing radiation and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in the HT-29 human colon carcinoma cell line

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Purpose/Objective: The role of programmed cell death (apoptosis) as a cellular response to cancer therapy such as radiation or chemotherapy is the subject of much study, and manipulation of the apoptotic response in tumor cells may be valuable in the treatment of a variety of cancers. Both p53 dependent and independent apoptotic pathways have been identified; p53 is mutated in at least 50 % of human cancers and a majority of radiation resistant tumors contain p53 mutations. This study is designed to examine the induction of programmed cell death in a human colon carcinoma cell line that possesses two mutated p53 alleles. Ionizing radiation alone, or in combination with the chemotherapeutic drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), were used to elicit the apoptotic response. This study will focus on whether these treatments can induce a significant apoptotic response in cells that have mutated p53 alleles. Materials and Methods: HT-29 cells were assessed for clonogenic survival after being plated at ...
