Analyses of postulated accidental releases of UF6 inside process buildings
International Nuclear Information System (INIS)
Uranium Hexafluoride is a material used in the various processes which comprise the front end of the nuclear fuel cycle (conversion, enrichment and fuel fabrication). Confinement of UF6 is a very important safety requirement since this material is highly reactive and presents safety hazards to humans. The present paper discusses the safety relevant aspects of accidental releases of UF6 inside process confinement buildings. Postulated accidental scenarios are analyzed and their consequences evaluated. Implant releases rates are estimated using computer code predictions. A time dependent homogeneous compartment model is used to predict concentrations of UF6, hydrogen fluoride and uranyl fluoride inside a confinement building, as well as to evaluate source terms released to the atmosphere. These source terms can be used as input to atmospheric dispersion models to ...
A review and update of refining practice in Canada
International Nuclear Information System (INIS)
This paper first reviews the history of the Port Hope uranium refinery of Eldorado Nuclear Limited. The current processes used for the production of UO_3, UO_2 and UF_6 from yellow cake are then discussed. Recent process changes and developments in the areas of solvent extraction and UO_3 production together with new processes for the production of ceramic UO_2 and UF_4, are described. Environmental and waste management problems, progress and solutions are next considered. Finally, some experience in siting a new UF_6 refinery, with respect to Environmental Impact Statements and public hearings, conclude the paper. (author).

This essay focuses on the major industrial changes from the late 1950s onwards in the industrial basins from the Nord/Pas-de-Calais to the Ruhrgebiet. The notion of industrial redeployment (reconversion industrielle) is critically analysed in the framework of European integration. The comparative approach highlights the importance of the time-space dimension which differs from one basin to the other. The diverse individual and collective actors also were in command of different power resources according to the various state traditions. The European Community, however, appears to have played an increasing role, culminating at the time of the steel industry crisis (1975-1985).

Mining and milling for uranium in Japan
International Nuclear Information System (INIS)
In Japan, the Ningyo-toge uranium deposit was discovered in 1955, and the Tono deposit in 1962. Geology of these mines is different from that of other metal mines developed in Japan. Therefore, it appeared that some changes were required in the usual mining methods applied to existing metal mines to mine uranium ore in these deposits. At the Ningyo-toge mine, effective methods were studied for mining the ore, such as the room and pillar method, long-wall method, slicing method, and the hydraulic method; as a result, it was determined that a modified long-wall method is the most useful and practicable for recovering uranium ore from this underground sedimentary deposit. Applicatons of in-place and microbiological leaching to these deposits are being studied to secure mine safety and decrease mine pollution. Since 1959, when the Ningyo-toge mine went into operation, no hazards for workers nor any pollution of the environment were permitted. Research and development on uranium processing ...

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)
The Institute of Energetic and Nuclear Research - IPEN is a research and development institution, located in a densely populated area, in the city of Sao Paulo. The nuclear fuel cycle was developed from the Yellow Cake to the enrichment and reconversion at IPEN. After this phase, all the technology was transferred to private enterprises and to the Brazilian Navy (CTM/SP). Some plants of the fuel cycle were at semi-industrial level, with a production over 20 kg/h. As a research institute, IPEN accomplished its function of the fuel cycle, developing and transferring technology. With the necessity of space for the implementation of new projects, the uranium hexafluoride (UF{sub 6}) production plant was chosen, since it had been idle for many years and presented potential leaking risks, which could cause environmental aggression and serious accidents. This plant decommission required accurate planning, as this work had not been carried out in Brazil before, for this ...

Reprocessed uranium fuel fabrication in Japan
International Nuclear Information System (INIS)
Nuclear fuel vendors in Japan are now studying reprocessed uranium (RepU) fuel in order to prepare for full scale utilization in the future. Separate studies are made for PWR and BWR fuel. The study consists of 2 phrases. The purposes of phase-1 are to understand various RepU characteristics in the fuel fabrication process, to analyze the core characteristics by loading RepU assemblies, to solve the problems clarified in the study, and to collect basic data for licensing. In phase-2, the effects of impurities on the fabrication process will be evaluated, and the safety of RepU fuel manufacturing will be confirmed with a RepU fuel fabrication campaign in 1990. The neutronic data will be collected after insertion into power reactors, and the data will be used to verify plant safety for full utilization of RepU in the future. This paper summarizes the phase-1 study results. 1. RepU Characteristics. The internal and external radiation exposures due to nuclide impurities in RepU, were ...

Diagnosis of plasmocytomas using magnetic resonance imaging
International Nuclear Information System (INIS)
Background. In multiple myeloma 5 different infiltration patterns can be differentiated: 1. Normal appearance of bone marrow, 2. focal involvement, 3. homogeneous diffuse infiltration, 4. combined diffuse and focal infiltration, 5. 'salt-and pepper' pattern with inhomogeneous bone marrow with interposition of fat islands. Methods. For the fast and total acquisition of all patterns a combination of a T1-weighted spin echo sequence and a fat suppression technique is superior. The focal involvement is clearly demonstrated as areas of high signal intensity on e.g. STIR images. Diffuse involvement can be quantified objectively by calculation of the percentage of signal intensity increase after contrast material injection. MRI is superior to X-ray in focal and diffuse involvement. With ultrafast sequences a 'screening' of the whole red bone marrow as for myeloma infiltration is possible. Prognosis. In prognosis studies diffuse infiltration is inferior to focal involvement. Patients without ...
