[Enzymatic pancreatogenic omental bursitis].
The most common causes of omental sac collections (OSC) are necrotic pancreatitis (90%) and pancreatic trauma (10%). Acute OSC is a form of local peritonitis in acute pancreatitis, subacute OSC are caused by internal pancreatic fistulas. The clinical and radiological signs, enzymatic activity of the exudate, morphological features of peritonitis were investigated. Treatment of acute OSC included conservative measures, of subacute OSC-surgical procedures. PMID:9163152

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)
This paper extends the analytical procedure described in another paper in these proceedings to analyze a variety of compact and light-weight OSC-designed radioisotope-heated generators. Those generators employed General Purpose Heat Source (GPHS) modules and a converter containing sixteen AMTEC cells of OSC`s revised five-tube design with enhanced cell wall reflectivity described in a companion paper in these proceedings. OSC found that the performance of the generator is primarily a function of the thermal insulation between the outside of the generator`s 16 cells and the inside of its wall. After examining a variety of insulation options, it was found that the generator`s performance is optimized by employing a hybrid insulation system, in which the space between the cells is filled with fibrous Min-K insulation, and the generator walls are lined with tapered (i.e., graded-length) multifoil insulation. The ...

Oxygenated sterol compounds (OSC), when incubated for 1 hr with human erythrocytes in lipoprotein-depleted medium at concentrations of 0.625-5 x 10/sup -5/M, are inserted into the cell membrane and remain there despite subsequent washing of the cells. The insertion results in expansion of the surface area of the red cell ghost membrane, an increase in critical hemolytic volume, and as a consequence, in dimished osmotic fragility of the erythrocytes. This effect is seen with echinocyte-forming as well as with non-echinocyte-forming OSC. Erythrocytes treated with OSC do not differ from control cells with respect to their mean cell volume (MCV) in isotonic solution, water content, ion fluxes, and filterability through polycarbonate filters. The shift of the osmotic fragility curve toward lower NaCl concentrations is proportional to the amount of OSC inserted into the red cell membrane. ...

Effects of the addition of precious metals (PM; Pt, Rh) on CeO{sub 2}/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} and CeO{sub 2}/La{sub 2}O{sub 3}/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} were confirmed to enhance the oxygen storage capacities (OSC). Increments in the OSC of the added CeO{sub 2}/La{sub 2}O{sub 3}/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} catalysts were much greater than those in the OSC of the PM added CeO{sub 2}/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}. The enhanced OSC is ascribed to the interaction between PM and a CeO{sub 2}-La{sub 2}O{sub 3} solid solution formed during the catalyst preparation. No enhancements in the OSC were observed on physical mixing of CeO{sub 2}/La{sub 2}O{sub 3}/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} and Pt-Rh/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}, although the composition ratio of PM:CeO{sub 2}:La{sub 2}O{sub 3} is the same as that in the PM added CeO{sub 2}/La{sub 2}O{sub 3}/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}. This indicates that the intimate contacts between the precious metals and ...

[The nurturing and development of nurse practitioners].
The role of nurse practitioner has been established because of a shortage of doctors. In May 2007, the first cohort of 582 nurse practitioners were licensed in Taiwan. The post of nurse practitioner in Taiwan is formally moving towards systematization and the most urgent matters in that regard are the sorting out of contentious issues and the establishment of clear job descriptions. Competence in critical thinking and problem-based learning is important and has to be improved with practice. The application of teaching assessment tools such as direct observation procedural skills (DOPS), objective structured clinical examination (OSCE), miniclinical evaluation exercises (Mini-CEX), and 360 degree assessments may contribute to the improvement of nurse practitioners' skills in conducting research, appraising evidence-based nursing literature, and developing teaching strategies and advanced systems by making policy clear, evaluating, auditing and monitoring the ...

Pulsatile viscous flow in a curved pipe: Effects of pulsation on the development of secondary flow
International Nuclear Information System (INIS)
This work presents an experimental and numerical study of pulsated Dean flow, three-dimensional pulsatile flow in a curved pipe. The numerical study is performed by CFD code (Fluent 6) in which a pulsated velocity field is imposed as an inlet condition. The experimental setup involves principally a 'Scotch-yoke' pulsatile generator and a 90o bend. Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) measurements have shown that the Scotch-yoke generator produces pure sinusoidal instantaneous mean velocities with a mean deviation of 3%. Visualizations by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and velocity measurements, coupled with the numerical results, have permitted analysis of the evolution of the swirling secondary flow structures that develop along the bend during the pulsation phase. These measurements were made for a range of stationary Reynolds number (300?Rest?1200), frequency parameter (1??=r0(?/?)1/2max,osc/Ust). We observe satisfactory agreement between the numerical and ...

Effective didactic skills training for teachers in continuing medical education
International Nuclear Information System (INIS)
Purpose: To develop, test, evaluate and implement effective state-of-the-art teacher training in didactic skills and methods. The training concept should be designed and beneficial for medical teachers' postgraduate medical education (CME). Materials and methods: A 5-day workshop with 12 theoretical and 9 'hands-on' modules was designed and stepwise improved, according to the trainees' feedback. All trainees were trained in small groups (6 to 10 participants per workshop). The workshops consisted of mini-lectures, repeated micro teaching exercises and video-supported feedback concerning the following key-competencies: Communication of goals; methods to trigger interactivity; design of slides in power point presentations; effective feedback-techniques; and use of media, time-management, skills teaching, assessment methods (e.g. OSCE and others), evaluation and general presentation skills. The evaluation was based on two components: (A) trainees' scores in two ...

Design of advanced automotive exhaust catalysts
Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)
Rhodium (Rh) is a critical component of current automotive three-way catalysts (TWCs), particularly with regard to NO{sub x} and CO conversion at rich and stoichiometric air-fuel ratios (A/F). Rh supported on CeO{sub 2} was active for NO{sub x} and CO conversions but could be deactivated easily by high temperature aging. The cause of the deactivation is ascribed to the sintering of CeO{sub 2}. ZrO{sub 2} incorporation into CeO{sub 2} is reported to have high thermal durability in terms of oxygen storage capacity (OSC). There has been no report showing direct experimental evidence that Rh-loaded on CeO{sub 2}-ZrO{sub 2} mixed oxides induced effects on TWC performance improvement in the actual automotive exhaust. In the present paper, the Rh-CeO{sub 2} interaction contributing to NO{sub x} reduction and the catalytic behavior of Rh-loaded CeO{sub 2}-ZrO{sub 2} mixed oxide is addressed. Incorporating CeO{sub 2}-ZrO{sub 2} into a catalyst offered significant ...

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)
In this article the methodology followed to diagnose the performance of the equipment where heat is transferred from the feed water, condensate and circulation water systems in fossil power plants (FPP). The data collection is made with the unit in normal operation, using local instrumentation without taking the equipment out of service for its installation. The equipment diagnosis is made through the analysis of the collected data in actual operation and the design data; for this purpose a thermal balance of the interested systems is performed to obtain all the conditions an operation data. Later on the performance indicative parameters (PIP) of actual operation and design are calculated and compared one against the other. Such a comparison reveals the performance deterioration and the possible equipment faults. The data obtained and the supplementary information are stored in a data base whose objective is that Comision Federal de Electricidad has on hand a prompt access to them in ...
