Physical, biochemical and physiological effects of ultraviolet radiation on Brassica napus and Phaseolus vulgaris

In order to follow some of the changes induced by ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280-320 nm) radiation in Phaseolus vulgaris and Brassica napus, experiments were designed to localize sites of changes in leaves and to correlate some of the physiological and biochemical changes with penetration of UV-B radiation. B.napus was exposed to 8.9 kJ m"-"2 day"-"1 biologically effective UV-B radiation (UV-B_B_E). The penetration of UV-B radiation into the leaf was followed using a quartz fibre optic microprobe. Monochromatic radiation at 310 nm was decreased by ca 50 and 34% in the adaxial and abaxial epidermis, respectively, in plants not exposed to UV-B, whereas the radiation was decreased by ca 70 and 42%, respectively, in the same region in UV-treated plants. Polychromatic radiation showed a wavelength dependent change mainly for the collimated radiation. A series of novel triazolinones were synthesized and their structures were characterized by 1H NMR, elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The herbicidal activities were evaluated against Echinochloa crusgalli (L.) Beauv., Digitaria adscendens, Brassica napus and Amaranthus retroflexus. A study of the magnetic properties and the heat capacity as functions of temperature and magnetic field of two ternary carbides RNiC_2, where R=La and Ce, confirms that LaNiC_2 becomes superconducting at T_c=2.7thinspK, and that CeNiC_2 orders antiferromagnetically below 18thinspK. LaNiC_2 is a conventional superconductor with a critical field of 900 Oe at T=2thinspK. The reaction of RbC_2_4 with C_6D_6 vapour was studied by neutron diffraction on a time scale of 5 min/spectrum. As for the reaction of KC_2_4, a second stage phase RbC_2_4(C_6D_6)sub(y) is initially formed and subsequently transformed into a first stage phase. Molar excess enthalpies and molar excess volumes are reported for the systems H_2O + (C_2H_5)_3N and D_2O + (C_2H_5)_3N at temperatures below and above their lower critical solution temperatures. The molar excess enthalpies are slightly less exothermic for the D_2O system. The molar excess volumes of the H_2O and D_2O systems are within experimental error of one another. Thermal conductivity of simple molecular substances at crystal-liquid phase transition

By the example of CH2Cl2, CF2Cl2, CHF2Cl, C2F6, C2H6, SF6 and C6H12 we have investigated the isobaric thermal conductivity jump at crystal-liquid phase transition. It is shown that the reduction in the thermal conductivity at melting derives from the degree of orientational ordering of the crystals at pre-melting point.

A new unified approach to bradyons and tachyons by conformal transformations

Observation of eta_c(1S) and eta_c(2S) decays to K+ K- pi+ pi- pi0 in two-photon interactions

We study the processes gamma gamma -> K^0_S K+/- pi-/+ and gamma gamma -> K+ K- pi+ pi- pi0 using a data sample of 519.2 fb-1 recorded by the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at center-of-mass energies near the Upsilon(nS) (n = 2,3,4) resonances. We observe the eta_c(1S), chi_c0(1P), chi_c2(1P), and eta_c(2S) resonances produced in two-photon interactions and decaying to K+ K- pi+ pi- pi0, with significances of 18.1, 5.7, 5.2, and 5.3 standard deviations (including systematic errors), respectively. We measure the eta_c(2S) mass and width in K^0_S K+/- pi-/+ decays, m(eta_c(2S))=3638.5 +/- 1.5 +/- 0.8 MeV/c^2 and Gamma(eta_c(2S)) = 13.4 +/- 4.6 +/- 3.2 MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and ...

The corrosion behavior of hard metals with VC and Cr3C2 grain growth inhibitors was investigated in alkaline solutions by electrochemical methods. The two inhibitors have opposite effects on the corrosion behavior: Cr3C2 significantly improves the corrosion behavior, whereas VC-containing alloys show a poor resistance. Observation of two charged bottomonium-like resonances

We report the observation of two narrow structures at 10610MeV/c^2 and 10650MeV/c^2 in the pi^{\\pm}Upsilon(nS) (n=1,2,3) and pi^{\\pm}h_b(mP) (m=1,2) mass spectra that are produced in association with a single charged pion in Upsilon(5S) decays. The measured masses and widths of the two structures averaged over the five final states are M_1=10608.4\\pm2.0MeV/c^2, Gamma_1=15.6\\pm2.5MeV and M_2=10653.2\\pm1.5MeV/c^2, Gamma_2=14.4\\pm3.2MeV. Analysis favors quantum numbers of I^G(J^P)=1^+(1^+) for both states. The results are obtained with a 121.4fb^{-1} data sample collected with the Belle detector near the Upsilon(5S) resonance, at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider.

Extraction of the neutron magnetic form factor from quasielastic "3He-vector(e-vector,e"') at Q"2=0.1-0.6 (GeV/c)"2

We have measured the transverse asymmetry A_T_"' in the quasielastic "3He-vector(e-vector,e"') process with high precision at Q"2 values from 0.1 to 0.6 (GeV/c)"2. The neutron magnetic form factor G_M"n was extracted at Q"2 values of 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c)"2 using a nonrelativistic Faddeev calculation which includes both final-state interactions (FSI) and meson-exchange currents (MEC). Theoretical uncertainties due to the FSI and MEC effects were constrained with a precision measurement of the spin-dependent asymmetry in the threshold region of "3He-vector(e-vector,e"'). We also extracted the neutron magnetic form factor G_M"n at Q"2 values of 0.3 to 0.6 (GeV/c)"2 based on plane wave impulse approximation calculations.

Abundances of Jupiter's Trace Hydrocarbons From Voyager and Cassini

The flybys of Jupiter by the Voyager spacecraft in 1979, and over two decades later by Cassini in 2000, have provided us with unique datasets from two different epochs, allowing the investigation of seasonal change in the atmosphere. In this paper we model zonal averages of thermal infrared spectra from the two instruments, Voyager 1 IRIS and Cassini CIRS, to retrieve the vertical and meridional profiles of temperature, and the abundances of the two minor hydrocarbons, acetylene (C2H2) and ethane (C2H6). The spatial variation of these gases is controlled by both chemistry and dynamics, and therefore their observed distribution gives us an insight into both processes. Light dark matter in leptophobic Z' models

Recent experimental results in direct dark matter detection may be interpreted in terms of a dark matter particle of mass around 10 GeV/c^2. We show that the required scenario can be realized with a new dark matter particle charged under an extra abelian gauge boson Z' that couples to quarks but not leptons. This is possible provided the Z' gauge boson is very light, around 10-20 GeV/c^2 in mass, and the gauge coupling constant is small, alpha' ~ 10^(-5). Such scenarios are not constrained by accelerator data.

Anisotropy of H/sub c2/ and its implications to grain-boundary flux pinning in V$sub 3$Si

The anisotropy of H/sub c2/ was measured in a V$sub 3$Si monocrystal and was found to be much larger than in other materials. The max elementary pinning force f/sub p/ is estimated to be approximately 0.01 dyn/cm at the reduced field H/H/sub c/ = 0.25 and 4.2$sup 0$K. The competition of neutrino energy loss due to the pair, photo-, plasma process at the late stages of stellar evolution

Based on the Weinberg-Salam theory, the competition of the Neutrino Energy Loss (NEL) rates due to the pair, photo- and plasma process are canvassed. The ratio factor C1, C2 and C3 which correspond the different contributions of the pair, photo- and plasma neutrino process to those of the total NEL rates are accurately taken into account. The ratio factors are very sensitive to the temperature and density. The ratio factor C2 always is lower than the ratio factor C1 and C3. The pair NEL process is the dominant contribution before the crossed point O(C1=C3=0.45) and the plasma NEL process will be the main dominant contribution after the crossed point O. With increasing temperature, the crossed point O will move to the direction of higher density. (authors)

Neutron induced disorder in superconducting A-15 compounds

The effect of high energy neutron (E greater than 1 MeV) irradiation at 60"0C on the superconducting critical temperature, T/sub c/, the upper critical field, H/sub c2/, the lattice parameter, a_0, and the degree of Long Range Order has been measured for Nb and V based A-15 superconducting compounds. Large reductions in T/sub c/"0 and H/sub c2/ are observed for fluences up to 5.0 x 10"1"9 n/cm"2. For Nb_3Al, a_0 increases and the degree of Long Range Order is significantly reduced as T/sub c/ is depressed. Results are discussed in terms of atomic ordering in the A-15 structure.

Mineralization and volatilization of ring labelled "1"4C-2,4-D in three different soils

Mineralization and volatilization of ring labelled "1"4C-2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in soil was studied over a period of six weeks under laboratory conditions at 25 deg. C in three different soils collected from three sites, Delhi, Jaipur and Ludhiana. A very slow rate of both mineralization and volatilization was observed in all the three soils. The observed mineralization, was highest for the Delhi soil, 0.93%, followed by the Ludhiana soil, 0.73% and the Jaipur soil 0.14% in 42 days. The extent of volatilization was 0.46% for the Jaipur soil, 0.37% for the Ludhiana soil and 0.32% for the Delhi soil. (author)

Extraction of 25 L fermentation broth of the newly isolated Streptomyces sp. strain TN58 and various separation and purification steps led to the isolation of five bioactive metabolites, namely brevianamide F (C1), reported from a streptomycete for the first time, N?-acetyltryptamine (C2), thiazolidomycin (C3), and two rhamnopyranosides (C4 and C5). These two rhamnopyranosides were produced directly, without precursor addition. The chemical structure of these five active compounds was established on the basis of 1H, 13C/APT and 2D NMR spectra, ESI and EI-MS data, and by comparison with data from the literature. Superconducting properties and structural transition in compounds with an A-15 lattice

The dependence of Tsub(c) on composition and deformation is calculated and compared with the corresponding dependence for Tsub(m). It is shown that superconducting and structural properties of A-15 compounds can be described, at least qualitatively, by the quasi-one-dimensional model previously developed by the authors. The superconductivity mechanism is assumed to be analogous to the BCS theory. The upper critical field Hsub(c2) of the V_3Si or Nb_3Sn compounds is found to be much greater than that in V or Nb.

Using $\\gamma \\gamma J/\\psi, J/\\psi \\ra e^+ e^-$ and $\\mu^+ \\mu^-$ events from a sample of $14.0\\times 10^6$ $\\psip$ decays collected with the BESII detector, the branching fractions for $\\psip\\ra \\pi^0\\J$, $\\eta\\J$, and $\\psi(2S)\\ar\\gamma\\chi_{c1},\\gamma\\chi_{c2}\\ar\\gamma\\gamma\\jpsi$ are measured to be $B(\\psip\\ra \\pi^0\\J) = (1.43\\pm0.14\\pm0.13)\\times 10^{-3}$, $B(\\psip\\ra \\eta\\J) = (2.98\\pm0.09\\pm0.23)%$, $B(\\psi(2S)\\ar\\gamma\\chi_{c1}\\ar\\gamma\\gamma\\jpsi) = (2.81\\pm0.05\\pm 0.23)%$, and $B(\\psi(2S)\\ar\\gamma\\chi_{c2}\\ar\\gamma\\gamma\\jpsi) = (1.62\\pm0.04\\pm 0.12)%$.

Supplementation of pyruvate prevents palmitate-induced impairment of glucose uptake in C2 myotubes.

Elevated fatty acid levels have been thought to contribute to insulin resistance. Repression of the glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) gene as well as impaired GLUT4 translocation may be a mediator for fatty acid-induced insulin resistance. This study was initiated to determine whether palmitate treatment repressed GLUT4 expression, whether glucose/fatty acid metabolism influenced palmitate-induced GLUT4 gene repression (PIGR), and whether attempts to prevent PIGR restored palmitate-induced impairment of glucose uptake (PIIGU) in C2 myotubes. Not only stimulators of fatty acid oxidation, such as bezafibrate, AICAR, and TOFA, but also TCA cycle substrates, such as pyruvate, leucine/glutamine, and ?-ketoisocaproate/monomethyl succinate, significantly prevented PIGR. Strongly enhanced critical current density in MgB{sub 2}/Fe tapes by stearic acid and stearate doping

Fe-sheathed MgB{sub 2} tapes with cheap stearic acid, Mg stearate and Zn stearate doping were prepared through the in situ powder-in-tube method. It is found that J{sub c}, H{sub irr} and H{sub c2} were significantly enhanced by doping. Compared to the pure tapes, J{sub c} for all the doped samples was improved by more than an order of magnitude in a high-field regime. At 4.2 K, the transport J{sub c} reached 2.02 x 10{sup 4} A cm{sup -2} at 10 T for the Zn stearate doped tapes and 3.72 x 10{sup 3} A cm{sup -2} at 14 T for the stearic acid doped samples, respectively. Moreover, at 20 K, H{sub irr} for the Zn stearate doped tape achieved 10 T, which is comparable to that of the commercial NbTi at 4.2 K. Simulation of the crystal field effect on the Pr"3"+ ion in K_2La_1_-_xPr_xCl_5 ternary chlorides

The high resolution absorption, luminescence and excitation spectra of the orthorhombic potassium lanthanum praseodymium ternary chloride, K_2La_1_-_xPr_xCl_5, (0.02 #<=# x #<=# 0.15) single crystals were recorded at 4, 77 and 293 K with different excitation sources. The experimental 4f"2 energy level scheme of the Pr"3"+ ion in K_2LaCl_5 derived from the absorption and emission spectra consisted of 86 (out of 91) Stark components. This energy level scheme was simulated by using a phenomenological crystal field (cf) model which included eight free ion and nine cf parameters according to the C_2_v symmetry. Including the relativistic kinetic energy in a spline-augmented plane-wave band calculation

The first-order relativistic correction to the kinetic energy of an electron, the mass-velocity term, is not bounded from below. It can, therefore, not be used within a variational framework. To overcome this deficiency we developed a method to include the entire relativistic kinetic energy #sq root#(p"2c"2+m_0"2c"4)-m_0c"2 in a spline-augmented plane-wave band calculation. The first results for silver are quite promising, especially for d and p states: The analysis of the energies of the core states as well as of the valence band structure suggests that the energies of d bands are reproduced within 1 mRy. However, the combination of the relativistic kinetic energy with the Darwin term leads to energies which are too low for s-like valence states by 10 mRy. This precursor was prepared in a six-step synthesis from guanosine. Our date, when compared with existing deep inelastic scattering data, can be used to test quark-hadron duality in g1 and A1 for 3He and the neutron. Sharp regularity for certain nilpotent group actions on the interval

According to the classical Plante-Thurston Theorem, all nilpotent groups of $C^2$-diffeomorphisms of the closed interval are Abelian. Using techniques coming from the works of Denjoy and Pixton, Farb and Franks constructed a faithful action by $C^1$-diffeomorphisms of $[0,1]$ for every finitely-generated, torsion-free, non-Abelian nilpotent group. In this work, we give a version of this construction that is sharp in what concerns the H\\"older regularity of the derivatives. Half of the proof relies on results on random paths on Heisenberg-like groups that are interesting by themselves.

On the stability of the Einstein static universe

We show using covariant techniques that the Einstein static universe containing a perfect fluid is always neutrally stable against small inhomogeneous vector and tensor perturbations and neutrally stable against adiabatic scalar density inhomogeneities so long as c"2_s > 1/5, and unstable otherwise. We also show that the stability is not significantly changed by the presence of a self-interacting scalar field source, but we find that spatially homogeneous Bianchi type IX modes destabilize an Einstein static universe. The implications of these results for the initial state of the universe and its pre-inflationary evolution are also discussed. (letter to the editor)

Alternative mechanisms of electron state excitation in diatomic molecules are examined with reference to CN and C2 molecules forming in chemical reactions behind strong shock wave fronts in a CO(CO2)-N2 gas mixture. The temperature range considered is 4000-8000 K. An effective excitation mechanism is proposed which involves rapid vibration-rotation excitation at all electron states and nonradiative transitions between perturbed electron states induced by collisions with the ambient gas particles.

Data are presented from the intermediate scale borehole test, an in situ test fielded in the pillar separating Rooms C1 and C2 at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The test was to provide data on the influence of scale, if any, on the structural behavior of underground openings in salt. These data include selected fielding information, test configuration, instrumentation activities, and comprehensive results from a large number of gages. Construction of the test began in December 1989, with the drilling of the intermediate scale borehole in December 1990. Gage data in this report cover the period from January 1989 through June 1993.

The neurotoxic effects of artemether on the cytoarchitecture of the cerebellum of adult male wistar rats

Using t-test analysis technique at 95% confidence interval i.e t < 0.05 and P - value = 2.26, no significant difference was observed between the average brain and cerebellar weight, the average width of cerebellar cortical layers, the density and the average size of Purkinje Cells in the control groups C1 and C2 and the experimental group E. Effect of two organic chemicals viz., 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazone (C_1) and naphthyl ethylene diamine (C_2) was studied by their application alone and together (Csub(1+2) at the rate of 10 ppm by growing wheat on a loamy soil (Typic ustochrept) containing recently immobilized fertilizes N of "1"5N - urea applied at 60, 120 and 180 ppm N to preceding rice under greenhouse conditions of a rice-wheat sequence. The application of C_1 and C_2 alone; and their combined application (Csub(1+2) produced 12, 15 and 18 per cent higher wheat grain yield over no-chemical application i.e. Co (3.50 g/pot). Analysis of the D+ --> K- pi+ e+ nu_e decay channel

Using 347.5 fb-1 of data recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II electron-positron collider, 244*10^3 signal events for the D+ --> K- pi+ e+ nu_e decay channel are analyzed. This decay mode is dominated by the \\bar{K}^*(892)^0 contribution. We determine the \\bar{K}^*(892)^0 parameters: m_{K^*(892)^0}=(895.4 +- 0.2 +- 0.2) MeV/c^{2}, \\Gamma^0_{K^*(892)^0}=(46.5 +- 0.3 +- 0.2) MeV/c^{2} and the Blatt-Weisskopf parameter $r_{BW}=2.1 +- 0.5 +- 0.5 (GeV/c)^{-1} where the first uncertainty comes from statistics and the second from systematic uncertainties. Tunable erbium-doped fiber ring laser for applications of infrared absorption spectroscopy

We fabricate a low noise erbium-doped fiber ring laser that can be continuously tuned over 102nm by insertion of the fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter (FFP-TF) in the ring cavity with a novel cavity structure and the optimal gain medium length. As an application of this fiber ring laser, we performed the absorption spectroscopy of acetylene (13C2H2) and hydrogen cyanide (H13C14N) and measure the absorption spectra of more than 50 transition lines of these gases with an excellent signal to noise ratio (SNR). The pressure broadening coefficients of four acetylene transition lines are obtained using this fiber ring laser and an external cavity laser diode.

Spin-polarized Auger-electron diffraction study of the magnetic poisoning of Fe(001) by sulfur

Spin-polarized angle-resolved sulfur L_2_,_3VV Auger-electron spectra have been recorded for the c(2x2)S/Fe(001) system. The data show the modulation of the sulfur Auger spin polarization as a function of emission angle, which represents an observation of spin-polarized Auger-electron diffraction (SPAED), a potentially powerful tool for the study of local magnetic structure at surfaces, interfaces, and thin films. Theoretical modeling of the SPAED data indicates a large decrease in the magnetization of the top iron layer, suggesting a magnetic poisoning induced by the sulfur overlayer. These findings are independently supported by the observation of a large decrease of secondary electron spin polarization upon sulfur adsorption.

Polarity of prismatic facets delimiting WC grains in WC-Co alloys

This study reports a determination of the polarity of WC facets in WC-Co alloys sintered at the liquid state. In these alloys, WC grains are delimited by basal facets and two sets of {101 0} prismatic facets, one set of facets being much more developed than the other. A variation of the shape is observed as a function of the composition of the alloy. High resolution transmission electron microscopy is used to investigate the polarity of the prismatic facets owing to the typical triangular patterns appearing on the images. The effect of the composition is investigated using two alloys with different carbon potentials and one containing VC and Cr3C2 as grain growth inhibitors. The interpretation of the images shows that in all cases, the same set of prismatic planes is favoured.

Phase diagram and low temperature magnetization of Gdsub(x)Ysub(1-x)Rh_4B_4

The phase diagram of Gdsub(x)Ysub(1-x)Th_4B_4 between the paramagnetic, superconducting and ferromagnetic state is reported. Low temperature dc-magnetization measurements reveal that macroscopic electro-magnetic effects are of minor importance for the suppression of Hsub(2c), which shows a smooth bell-shaped behavior for x >= 0.15 with no indication of an anomaly near Tsub(c2). At low temperature in samples with x >= 0.20 a transition from type II to type I superconductivity seems to occur. The low temperature normal state susceptibility follows a Curie-Weiss law indicating reentrant behavior for x >= 0.10. (orig.).

Two new triterpene glycosides, patagonicosides B and C (2 and 3, resp.), together with the known patagonicoside A (1), have been isolated from the EtOH extract of the sea cucumber Psolus patagonicus. The structures of the new compounds were established on the basis of extensive NMR spectroscopic analysis ((1)H- and (13)C-NMR, (1)H,(1)H-COSY, HMBC, HSQC, TOCSY, and NOESY), HR-ESI-MS data, and chemical transformations. Obervation of \\chi_{cJ}--> omega omega decays

Decays of $\\chi_{c0,2}\\ar\\ww$ are observed for the first time using a sample of $14.0\\times 10^6$ $\\psi(2S)$ events collected with the BESII detector. The branching ratios are determined to be ${\\cal B}(\\chi_{c0}\\ar \\ww)=(2.29\\pm 0.58\\pm 0.41)\\times 10^{-3}$ and ${\\cal B}(\\chi_{c2}\\ar\\ww)=(1.77\\pm 0.47\\pm 0.36)\\times 10^{-3}$, where the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. The significances of the two signals are $4.4\\sigma$ and $4.7\\sigma$, respectively.

Level set method based segmentation provides an efficient tool for topological and geometrical shape handling. Conventional level set surfaces are only $C^0$ continuous since the level set evolution involves linear interpolation to compute derivatives. Bajaj et al. present a higher order method to evaluate level set surfaces that are $C^2$ continuous, but are slow due to high computational burden. In this paper, we provide a higher order GPU based solver for fast and efficient segmentation of large volumetric images. We also extend the higher order method to multi-domain segmentation. Our streaming solver is efficient in memory usage.

Interaction of periodic and iodic acids with propyoneamide in aqueous solutions at 25 deg C has been studied. In the system iodic acid-propyoneamide-water formation of two compounds of the composition 6C_2H_5CONH_2#centre dot#HIO_3 and C_5H_5CONH_2#centre dot#HIO_3 is ascertained, for which concentrational boundaries of formation, density, melting points are determined. The system periodic acid-propyoneamide-water is referred to the simple eutonic type. By the method of IR spectroscopy it has been shown that oxygen atom of amide carbonyl group is the centre of propyoneamide protonation by iodic acid.

Certain fluorocarbons, such as difluorodichloromethane (FC 12), depress the cardiovascular system by diminution of all the transmembrane ionic conductances in cardiac tissues. Does FC 12 also inhibit active transport and thus enzymatic activity and cellular energy. We measured phosphocreatine (PC), adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and cyclic adenosine monophosphate (AMPc) in rat hearts. Rats were randomly divided into 4 groups; 2 control groups: one breathing a mixture of oxygen (21%) and nitrogen (79%) (group C) and the other breathing the same mixture but simultaneously perfused with 1 microgram/kg/min. epinephrine (groupe E-C); 2 trial groups T and E-T where nitrogen was replaced by FC 12. The maximal FC 12 concentration of 720 micrograms/ml in arterial blood produced no significant difference in the concentrations of these three metabolites compared with controls.

Andreev reflection spectroscopy in MgB{sub 2}

Our Andreev reflection measurements (Phys. Rev. Lett. 87 (2001) 137005) along with other experiments have led to a general consensus that MgB{sub 2} is a multiband superconductor with two main superconducting gaps closing at the same T{sub c}. Here we show the behavior of the small gap as a function of the temperature and magnetic field. This gap is isotropic with T{sub c} of the bulk material but with a specific small (crossover) critical magnetic field of about 1 T much lower than the real H{sub c2}. The latter field is anisotropic and is rather governed by the large gap and strongly anisotropic Fermi surface of the material.

Structures and properties of fluorinated amorphous carbon films

Fluorinated amorphous carbon (a-C:F) films were deposited by radio frequency bias assisted microwave plasma electron cyclotron resonance chemical vapor deposition with tetrafluoromethane (CF_4) and acetylene (C_2H_2) as precursors. The deposition process was performed at two flow ratios R=0.90 and R=0.97, where R=CF_4/(CF_4+C_2H_2). The samples were annealed at 300 deg. C for 30 min. in a N_2 atmosphere. Both Fourier transform infrared and electron spectroscopy for chemical analyzer were used to characterize the a-C:F film chemical bond and fluorine concentration, respectively. A high resolution electron energy loss spectrometer was applied to detect the electronic structure. The higher CF_4 flow ratio (R=0.97) produced more sp"3 linear structure, and it made the a-C:F film smoother and softer. Simple Methods for Determining Relative Stereochemistry of Kainoid Amino Acids by (1)H NMR Chemical Shifts.

The kainoid amino acids are biologically important compounds because they show remarkable neuroexcitatory and excitotoxic activities. For exhibiting potent activity, the stereochemical relationship of the substituents on the pyrrolidine ring is crucial. We found simple methods for determining the relative stereochemistry of these compounds on the basis of the (1)H NMR chemical shifts of H-2 and H-4 in D(2)O solution. The signals of H-2 appear at fields higher than 4.2 ppm when the compounds have 2,3-trans stereochemistry whereas, in the 2,3-cis compounds, they appear lower than 4.2 ppm, irrespective of the C-4 substituent. This criterion holds when the solution is in the range of pD 3-8. Moreover, when an epimeric pair at C-2 is available and the spectra are recorded at the same or nearly equal pD, the H-2 chemical shift of the 2,3-trans isomer is higher than that of the corresponding 2,3-cis isomer. Observation of $X(3872)\\to J/\\psi \\gamma$ and search for $X(3872)\\to\\psi'\\gamma$ in B decays

We report a study of $B\\to (J/\\psi \\gamma) K$ and $B\\to (\\psi' \\gamma)K$ decay modes using $772\\times 10^{6}$ $B\\bar{B}$ events collected at the \\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric $e^+ e^-$ collider. We observe $X(3872) \\to J/\\psi \\gamma$ and report the first evidence for $\\chi_{c2} \\to J/\\psi \\gamma$ in $B\\to (X_{c\\bar{c}}\\gamma) K$ decays, while in a search for $X(3872) \\to \\psi' \\gamma$ no significant signal is found. Fully fluorinated compounds (perfluoro compounds) represent a class of chemicals which include many extremely inert species-inert to both chemical reaction and photodissociation. Well known examples include SF6 and the perfluorocarbons (PFCs) CF_4 and Teflon. SF_6 is used industrially in electrical switch gear and as an atmospheric tracer. CF_4 and C_2F_6 are released into the atmosphere as a by-product of aluminum manufacture. It has been discovered that the presence of MoO/sub 3/ lowers the ..cap alpha..-..beta.. transition in Sb/sub 2/O/sub 4/ from 935 to 850/sup 0/C with concurrent dissolution of Mo in the high-temperature (..beta..) form. The structure of Mo-doped ..beta..-Sb/sub 2/O/sub 4/ has been investigated by powder neutron diffraction, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and Raman spectroscopies, and scanning-electron microscopy (SEM). Cell parameters: a = 12.0571 (12) A, b = 4.8335 (1) A, c = 5.3838 (6) A, ..beta.. = 105.579 (5)/sup 0/, monoclinic, space group C2/c, Z = 4. Combining the results of these techniques leads to the hypothesis that Mo is located interstitially within channels of electron density in the Sb/sub 2/O/sub 4/ structure with concurrent vacancy of two Sb/sup III/ atoms. 1,2,3-Trisilacyclopenta-1,4-diene 2, featuring three skeletal Si atoms in the five-membered ring, was synthesized by the thermolysis of the 1,2,3-trisilabicyclo[1.1.0]butane derivative 1 at 130 degrees C in the presence of hex-3-yne. Possessing the properties of nonconjugated cyclopentadiene, 2 readily underwent reduction with KC(8), which was followed by treatment with LiBr to form the lithium salt of 1,2,3-trisilacyclopentadienide 3(-)*[Li(+)(thf)], from which the ketone-coordinated derivative 3(-)*[Li(+)(O=C(t)Bu(2))] was prepared. Both 3(-)*[Li(+)(L)] (L = thf, O=C(t)Bu(2)) are classified as novel 6pi-electron aromatic systems based on their characteristic X-ray crystal and NMR spectral data. Relationship between the density of states and the superconducting transition temperature in A-15 compounds

Data by Wiesmann et al. on the temperature coefficient of the upper critical field, dH/sub c/2(T)/dT, and the normal-state resistivity rho_0 near the superconducting transition temperature T/sub c/ are analyzed to estimate the bare density of states N (E/sub F/) as a function of structural disorder and T/sub c/ in various #alpha#-particle irradiated samples of A-15 Nb_3Ge and Nb_3Sn. By taking into account the change in the electron-phonon coupling strength with T/sub c/ and the effect of mass enhancement arising from the electron-phonon interaction, the results of the new analysis indicate that (i) the drop in N (E/sub F/) for Nb_3Ge is relatively small as T/sub c/ changes from approx. 21 to approx. 4 K, in agreement with a recent low-temperature specific-heat measurement; (ii) the value of N (E/sub F/) in Nb_3Sn decreases by a factor of approx. 4 as T/sub c/ varies from approx. 18 to approx. 3 K. Local cardiac glucose utilization (LCarGU) was quantified in the rat heart according to the Sokoloff model and local cardiac blood flow (LCarBF) according to the /sup 14/C-iodoantipyrine method. For quantitative autoradiography calibration curves for heart slices were performed. They differed from the brain calibration curves by 8%. The lumped constant was 0.377 in isolated working hearts. LCarGU and LCarBF could then be quantified in awake rats. At different locations mean LCarGU of different hearts varied from 85 to 200 ..mu..moles/100g/min and mean LCarBF from 390 to 831 ml/100g/min. The ratio subendocardial/subepicardial glucose utilization or blood flow was not systematically different from 1. The results indicate that glucose can be an important fuel in the heart of the awake rat, although its contribution to overall metabolism varies from animal to animal.

Proton spin lattice relaxation studies in lithium ammonium sulfate LiNH_4SO_4

Lithium ammonium sulfate (LAS) undergoes a phase transition at Tsub(c1) = 459.5deg K from a paraelectric phase (phase 1) to a ferroelectric phase (phase II) and again at Tsub(c2) = 283deg K to a polar ferroelastic phase (phase III). Proton spin lattice relaxation investigations in the temperature range 480-77deg K at 10 MHz show discontinuous changes in Tsub(1) at the transition temperatures, indicating first order phase transitions. The absence of the slow motion region (#omega#sub(not)tausub(not)>>1) shows that the ammonium ions are reorienting fast enough to keep the resonance absorption line narrow down to liquid nitrogen temperatures. The possibility of a second minimum and a low activation energy, Esub(a) = 2.659 kcal/mole, in phase III suggest the possibility of tunnelling of the protons at low temperatures. Neutron irradiation of superconducting compounds

The effects of neutron irradiation on the superconducting and normal state properties of alloys and compounds are presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the A-15 compounds where the effects of neutron irradiation on Tsub(c), Hsub(c_2), long range order parameter and lattice parameter are described. Large depressions (up to 80%) in Tsub(c) are observed for all the A-15 compounds studied with the exception of Mo_3Os where much smaller decreases in Tsub(c) are seen. Along with the decrease in Tsub(c) and increase in lattice parameter, the degree of long range order, as measured by X-ray and neutron diffraction, decreases. Also presented are the results of isothermal and isochronal anneals up to 900"0C. The unirradiated value of Tsub(c) can be restored by annealing, and for those systems where measurements have been made, recovery of the lattice parameter and order parameter also takes place. The attenuation of gamma rays in some fatty acids, viz. formic acid (CH_2O_2), acetic acid (C_2H_4O_2), propionic acid (C_3H_6O_2), butyric acid (C_4H_8O_2), n-hexanoic acid (C_6H_1_2O_2), n-caprylic acid (C_8H_1_6O_2), lauric acid (C_1_2H_2_4O_2), myristic acid (C_1_4H_2_8O_2), palmitic acid (C_1_6H_3_2O_2), oleic acid (C_1_8H_3_4O_2) and stearic acid (C_1_8H_3_6O_2), has been measured at the photon energies 81, 356, 511, 662, 1173 and 1332 keV. Molar extinction coefficients of some commonly used solvents (ethanol (C_2H_5OH), methanol (CH_3OH), propanol (C_3H_7OH), butanol (C_4H_9OH), water (H_2O), toluene (C_7H_8), benzene (C_6H_6), carbontetrachloride (CCl_4), acetonitrile (C_4H_3N), chlorobenzene (C_6H_5Cl), diethylether (C_4H_1O) and dioxane (C_4H_8O_2)) have been determined by a well-collimated narrow beam transmission geometry at 279, 356, 662, 1173, 1252 and 1332 keV #gamma# rays. The total #gamma# ray interaction cross sections of these solvents have also been determined. A good agreement has been obtained between the experimental results with the theoretical values evaluated through XCOM calculations.

Molar extinction coefficients in aqueous solutions of some amino acids

Mass attenuation coefficients of amino acids viz. glycerine (C_2H_5NO_2), 1-Serine (C_3H_7NO_3), 1-Theronine (C_4H_9NO_3), 1-Proline (C_5H_9NO_2), 1-Valine (C_5H_1_1NO_2) and 1-Phenylalanine (C_9H_1_1NO_2) in aqueous solutions have been determined at 81, 356, 511, 662, 1173 and 1332 keV by the gamma-ray transmission method in a narrow beam good geometry setup. Precisely measured densities of these solutions were used for the determination of these coefficients which varied systematically with the corresponding changes in the concentrations (g/cm"3) of the solutions. Molar extinction coefficients of amino acids were then obtained at these energies and were found to be in good agreement with the theoretical results. Microwave induced combustion synthesis of ceramic and ceramic-metal composites

Microwaves were used to induce self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) in the reaction 3TiO{sub 2}+3C+(4+x)Al {yields} 3TiC+2Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}+xAl. The SHS process was studied for x = 0 and 4, using slow and fast heating rates and with and without the application of uniaxial pressure. Less than 50 watts was required to internally ignite the samples using a TE{sub 102} microwave cavity mode. Uniaxial stresses in the range of 200-1400 psi were continuously applied along the vertical axis of some of the processed samples as the SHS reactions were initiated. SEM photomicrographs clearly indicate differences in the formation of whiskers and other microstructural features in the products obtained from microwave and conventional hot wire techniques. The x = 0 samples processed with fast and slow microwave heating rates reached higher densities than the conventionally processed samples.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the most common neurodegenerative movement disorder. Mutations in PTEN-induced kinase 1 (PINK1) are a frequent cause of recessive PD. Autophagy, a pathway for clearance of protein aggregates or impaired organelles, is a newly identified mechanism for PD development. However, it is still unclear what molecules regulate autophagy in PINK1-silenced cells. Here we report that autophagosome formation is promoted in the early phase in response to PINK1 gene silencing by lentivirus transfer vectors expressed in mouse striatum. Reduced PP2A activity and increased phosphorylation of PP2A at Y307 (inactive form of PP2A) were observed in PINK1-knockdown dopaminergic cells and striatum tissues. Local composition analysis of SiC microstructures formed by ion projection in silicon using energy filtered TEM in combination with FIB specimen preparation

Buried silicon carbide (SiC) microstructures with lateral dimensions in the #mu#m range were formed by high-dose projection of 1.5 MeV C"2"+ ions in Si(100) at different doses and temperatures and subsequent annealing for 10 h at 1250 deg. C. Sections of individual SiC microstructures were prepared for cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis using a focused ion beam (FIB). Besides the possibility to select an individual microstructure, the FIB technique has the advantage of producing specimen foils of uniform thickness. Therefore, it was possible to map the carbon concentration of microstructures by energy filtered TEM (EFTEM) using the C_K absorption edge without the need of any sample thickness correction. Local overstoichiometric (>50%) carbon concentrations are shown to be correlated to the formation of an amorphous phase in the SiC and to significant swelling visible at the Si wafer surface 2 #mu#m above.

Influence of second phase particles on fracture toughness in AZ31 magnesium alloys

Three kinds of thin AZ31 wrought magnesium alloys sheets were used in order to investigate the influence of the second phase particles on fracture toughness. From the theoretical model, the ratio of {lambda}{sub p}/d{sub p} would be estimated 5 {proportional_to} 6. On the other hand, from the microstructural observation, average particle spacing on each material was sample A: 13.1 {mu}m, sample B: 14.1, and sample C: 12 {mu}. In addition, average particle size on each sample was sample A: 2.1, sample B: 1.9, and sample C: 2.3 {mu}m. Therefore, the ratio of {lambda}{sub p}/d{sub p} calculated from fracture surface observation would be predicted 6 {proportional_to} 7. In comparison with the result of the prediction by theoretical analysis was in good agreement with the result of fracture toughness observation. In vitro and QSAR studies of cucurbitacins on HepG2 and HSC-T6 liver cell lines

The aim of this study was to evaluate cucurbitacins (Cucs) liver protective activity in vitro and conduct QSAR studies against lipophilicity and ab initio descriptors. Nine Cucs were isolated from Cucurbitaceae plants and eight prepared by C2-alkylation or C16-acylation. Ten Cucs demonstrated protective activity on human hepatocyte-derived HepG2 cells exposed to CCl4 (EC50=2.4-45.3mM) with good margin to toxicity (T/A). All Cucs exhibited anti-proliferative effect on serum-activated rat stellate cells, HSC-T6 (EC50=0.02-4.12mM) with high T/A. Feasibility study of large combined function magnets for the Jefferson lab 12 GeV upgrade

The 12 GeV upgrade at Jefferson Lab has identified two new large spectrometers as Physics detectors for the project. The first is a 7.5 Gev/c 35 m-sr. spectrometer that requires a pair of identical Combined Function Superconducting Magnets (CFSM) that can simultaneously produce 1.5 T dipole fields and 4.5 T/m quadrupole fields inside a warm bore of 120cm. The second is an 11 GeV/c 2 m-sr. spectrometer that requires a CFSM that simultaneously produces a dipole field of 4.0 T and a quadruple field of 3.0 T/m in a 60 cm warm bore. Magnetic designs using TOSCA 3D have been performed to realize the magnetic requirements, provide 3d fields for optics analysis and produce field and force information for the engineering feasibility of the magnets. Evidence for the h_b(1P) meson in the decay Upsilon(3S) --> pi0 h_b(1P)

Using a sample of 122 million Upsilon(3S) events recorded with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at SLAC, we search for the h_b(1P) spin-singlet partner of the P-wave chi_b(1P) states in the sequential decay Upsilon(3S) --> pi0 h_b(1P), h_b(1P) --> gamma eta_b(1S). We observe an excess of events above background in the distribution of the recoil mass against the pi0 at mass 9902 +/- 4 (stat.) +/- 1 (syst.) MeV/c^2. The width of the observed signal is consistent with experimental resolution, and its significance is 3.0 sigma, including systematic uncertainties. We obtain the value (3.7 +/- 1.1 (stat.) +/- 0.7 (syst.))x 10^{-4} for the product branching fraction BF(Upsilon(3S) --> pi0 h_b) x BF(h_b --> gamma eta_b).

Determination of plutonium in soil samples by ICP-MS after radiochemical separation procedure

A method was developed for the determination of plutonium in the soil samples by ICP-MS with TOA extraction chromatographic column. The optimized sample loading rate is below 0.2 mL/min (column inner diameter is 3.5 mm). Using hot 0.02 mol/L oxalic acid (H_2C_2O_4) in 0.16 mol/L HNO_3 to elute Pu from the solid phase in the column. The Pu recovery of 87.3%-96.8% in soil samples was obtained. The plutonium is separated with the ion exchange method in this work. Both extraction chroma- tography and ion-exchange methods efficiently remove the uranium and matrix interference from the ICP- MS measurement. The instrumental detection limit for "2"3"9Pu was 0.48 pg/mL, which corresponds to 1, 1 mBq/mL. (authors)

Cluster-assisted multiple ionization of methyl iodide by a nanosecond laser: Influence of laser intensity on the kinetic energy and peak profile of multicharged ions

The dependences of kinetic energies and peak profiles of multicharged ions of I "q"+ (q = 2-3) and C"2"+ on the laser intensity have been studied in detail by time-of-flight mass spectrometry, those multicharged ions are produced by irradiation of methyl iodide cluster beam with a nanosecond 532 nm Nd-YAG laser. Our experiments show that the kinetic energies released of multicharged ions increase linearly with the laser intensity in the range of 3 x 10"9-2 x 10"1"1 W/cm"2. The peaks of multicharged ions are split to forward ions and backward ions, and the ratio of the backward ions to forward ions decreases exponentially with laser intensity. The decreasing of backward ions is probably due to Coulomb scattering by the heavier I"+ ions when they turn around through the laser focus point. In this paper, bond cleavage reactions are discussed in relation to the softening and solubilization of coal. Were used 9,10-dihydroanthracene (DHA) and 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene (DHP) as models of hydrogen donating compounds in coal, and bibenzyl, 1,2-diethane, benzylphenylether, and 1,5-dibenzylnaphthalene were used as models of bridge structure compounds. They were compared mutually, as to reactivity of coal against DHA and DHP. For the homolytic cleavage of bridges, DHA with excellent radical supplement performance provided excellent hydrogen donating performance. While, for the ipso-position cleavage of bridges, it was found that DHP can act as an effective hydrogen donor. For the reaction between coal and hydrogenated aromatic compounds, cleavage of relatively weak bonds, such as ether linkage and dimethylene linkage, occurred at about 380{degree}C, and hydrogen from DHA or DHP was consumed. Yttrium doped La_1_-_xY_xO_0_._9F_0_._1FeAs superconductors: Hall and thermopower studies

The effect of yttrium substitution at the lanthanum site on the superconducting properties of La_1_-_xY_xO_0_._9F_0_._1FeAs ('x' = 0, 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, 0.50 and 0.60) oxypnictides has been studied. Powder X-ray diffraction studies confirm single phases till x = 0.1 beyond which minor amount of Y_2O_3 is observed. The temperature dependence of resistivity measurements confirm the superconducting transition temperature (T_c) of 34.8 (#+-#0.05) K and corresponding Meissner transition at 34.3 K in the 'x' = 0.3 composition which is higher than that reported for the parent phase (LaO_0_._9F_0_._1FeAs (T_c = 28 K)). Further increase in the concentration of yttrium leads to broadening and suppression of the superconducting transition. The value of H_c_2 at zero temperature is estimated to be about 60.5 T. The Procedure determining the concentrations of total rare earth and their determination with a new reagent, tribromochlorophosphonazo (CPA-tB), that is 7-[1-(2, 4, 6-tribromo-phenyl) azo]-2-[1-(2-phosphono-4-chloro-phenyl) azo]-chromotropic acid, in high-level liquid waste and some characters of CPA-tB are studied. CPA-tB and its complexes of rare earth elements are stable in the glycol-H_2O system. Adding glycol shifts the absorption spectrum to left and increases the molar extinction coefficient. Transport and superconducting properties of RNi_2B_2C (R=Y, Lu) single crystals

The in-plane resistivity, in-plane absolute thermopower, and upper critical field measurements are reported for single-crystal samples of YNi_2B_2C and LuNi_2B_2C superconductors. The in-plane resistivity shows metallic behavior and varies approximately linearly with temperature near room temperature (RT) but shows nearly quadratic behavior in temperature at low temperatures. The YNi_2B_2C and LuNi_2B_2C single-crystal samples exhibit large transverse magnetoresistance (#approx#6 8% at 45 kOe) in the ab plane. The absolute thermopower S(T) is negative from RT to the superconducting transition temperature T_c. Its magnitude at RT is a few times of the value for a typical good metal. S(T) is approximately linear in temperature between #approx#150 K and RT. Extrapolation to T=0 gives large intercepts (few #mu#V/K) for both samples suggesting the presence of a much larger knee than would be expected from electron-phonon interaction renormalization effects. Thermal stability of nanocomposite CrC/a-C:H thin films

The thermal stability of low-friction Me-C/a-C:H coatings is important for their potential applications in the tool and automotive industry. Recently we showed that CrC _x/a-C:H coatings prepared by unbalanced magnetron sputtering of a Cr target in Ar + CH_4 glow discharges exhibit a nanocomposite structure where metastable fcc CrC nanocrystals are encapsulated by an a-C:H phase. Here, we present the structural evolution of these nanocomposite CrC/a-C:H coatings during annealing. Posterior flows were done with a bolus of 10 mCi Tc-99m sulfur colloid with computer time-activity curves over the liver and left kidney. Curves were analyzed for per cent of hepatic arterial (HA) and portal venous contribution using the slope ratio method. Hepatic arterialization was estimated from the angle of the HA component of the curve. Reversal of the relative contribution of the hepatic and portal components of total flow were seen in all groups. X-ray crystal structures of L-3,4-dihydroxy-2-butanone-4-phosphate synthase from Magnaporthe grisea are reported for the E-SO{sub 4}{sup 2-}, E-{sub 4}{sup 2-}-Mg{sup 2+}, E-SO{sub 4}{sup 2-}-Mn{sup 2+}, E-SO{sub 4}{sup 2-}-Mn{sup 2+}-glycerol, and E-SO{sub 4}{sup 2-}-Zn{sup 2+} complexes with resolutions that extend to 1.55, 0.98, 1.60, 1.16, and 1.00 {angstrom}, respectively. Active-site residues of the homodimer are fully defined. The structures were used to model the substrate ribulose 5-phosphate in the active site with the phosphate group anchored at the sulfate site and the placement of the ribulose group guided by the glycerol site. The model includes two Mg{sup 2+} cations that bind to the oxygen substituents of the C2, C3, C4, and phosphate groups of the substrate, the side chains of Glu37 and His153, and water molecules. Preoperative staging of rectal carcinoma with combined sonography and pelvic computed tomography

The accurate staging of rectal carcinoma is very important for treatment planning. The histological data obtained from surgical specimens of 22 patients with rectal carcinoma were compared with pre-and postoperative endorectal US findings and with preoperative CT results. According to an adapted version of Astler and Coller classification, the different degrees of tumor spread into the rectal wall were represented as follows: stage A: 1 patient; stage B1: 5 patients; stage B2: 6 patients; stage C1: 1 patient; stage C2: 8 patients and stage D: 1 patient. Preoperative staging, based on the overall results of CT and US, was in agreement with histology in 19 of 22 cases. Individual analysis of US and CT results, in comparison with histological data, showed US staging accuracy to be 77.3% (17/22 patients). Pecularities of the superconducting gaps and the fermion-boson interaction in TmNi{sub 2}B{sub 2}C as seen by point-contact spectroscopy

Point-contact (PC) investigations on the title compound in the normal and superconducting (SC) state (T{sub c}{approx_equal}10.6 K) are presented. The T-dependence of two SC gaps in TmNi{sub 2}B{sub 2}C determined by Andreev-reflection spectroscopy deviates from the BCS behavior in displaying a maximum at about T{sub c}/2. Additional evidence for the presence of a 2nd gap half as large as the main gap is given. For the first time ''reentrant'' features were found in the Andreev-reflection spectra measured in magnetic fields. The PC spectroscopy of the fermion-boson interaction in TmNi{sub 2}B{sub 2}C reveals a pronounced phonon maximum at 9.5 meV and a more smeared one around 15 meV, while at higher energies the PC spectra are almost featureless. On the continuous measurement of the cosmic-ray intensity, 2

Since November 1971, the cosmic ray neutron intensity has been measured continuously with 3NM-64 neutron monitor at Fukushima University (140"029'E geographic longitude, 37"045'N geographic latitude, 27.6"0N geomagnetic latitude and 10.55 GV cut-off rigidity). After the neutron monitor had been operated during the period of fourteen months at the ground floor of 3-storied ferro-reinforced concrete building, it was removed to the prefabricated house near the old position of the monitor at January 1973. As a result of the removement of the monitor, the expected values for the counting rate and barometric coefficient of our neutron monitor were obtained, 7.5x10"4 cph and -0.64% mb respectively. The monitor was moved out into a new place, the statistical accuracy of counting rate is altered from 0.44% (hourly counting rate) to 0.36%. Gas chromatographic detection of organometallic compounds by reactive-flow photometry

The response of the reactive flow detector (RFD) toward organometallic compounds of several transition metals has been explored, and several of its strong elemental responses have been characterized in detail. The RFDs minimum detectable flow (measured in picograms of metal per second at S/N_p_-_t_-_p=2) is 0.1 for ruthenium, 3 for chromium, 10 for manganese, 5 for nickel, 15 for iron, and 2 for osmium. Typically, the linearity of response spans four orders of magnitude, with atomic selectivity of metal versus carbon ranging from 2 to 3 orders. Response quenching by co-eluting hydrocarbons is not observed. Two methods, a traditional emulsion technique and a high voltage electrostatically modified encapsulation system, were used to fabricate degradable chitosan/beta -tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) microspheres. The two distinct kinds of microspheres both exhibited good sphericity and the beta-TCP was trapped well inside the chitosan gel. The microspheres prepared by high voltage electrostatic system exhibited a rougher outer surface and narrower size distribution. These microspheres were then used as an added constituent to commercially available PMMA bone cement. Effect of N_2 + H_2 gas mixtures in plasma nitriding on tribological properties of duplex surface treated steels

Thermo-reactive diffusion chromizing followed by pulsed plasma nitriding were carried out on AISI 52100 and 8620 bearing steels. The chromized samples were pulse-plasma nitrided for 5 h at 500 deg. C in various N_2-H_2 gas mixtures. The coated steels were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and microhardness testing. The unlubricated wear behaviors of only chromized and duplex treated steels were investigated in ball-on-disc system tests at room temperature. X-ray diffraction patterns of the duplex treated samples containing H_2 indicated the formation of dominant CrN and Cr_2N nitrides as well as the formation of Cr_3C_2 and Cr_7C_3 carbides. We present sensitive high angular resolution (0.''57-0.''78) SO, SO_2, CO, C_2H_5OH, HC_3N, and HCOCH_2OH line observations at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths of the young O-type protostar W51 North made with the Submillimeter Array. We report the presence of a large (about 8000 AU) and hot molecular circumstellar disk around this object, which connects the inner dusty disk with the molecular ring or toroid reported recently and confirms the existence of a single bipolar outflow emanating from this object. The molecular emission from the large disk is observed in layers with the transitions characterized by high excitation temperatures in their lower energy states (up to 1512 K) being concentrated closer to the central massive protostar. The molecular emission from those transitions with low or moderate excitation temperatures is found in the outermost parts of the disk and exhibits an inner cavity with an angular size of around 0.''7. ...

Crystal-field analysis of Eu"3"+ energy levels in the new rare-earth R BiY_1_-_xR_xGeO_5 oxide

Pale colored BiY_1_-_xR_xGeO_5 (R=rare-earth from Pr to Yb) polycrystalline samples exhibit a crystalline phase isostructural with the orthorhombic Pbca (No. 61) structure-type established for BiYGeO_5 and BiYbGeO_5. R occupies a single point site in the host, with the lowest C_1 symmetry. While for Pr and Nd x must be #<=#0.35, for smaller R ions, Sm to Yb, the phase appears for any x content. Detailed crystallographic data for BiErGeO_5 have been determined from the structure refinement of its neutron diffraction profile at room temperature. Optical absorption and photoluminescence measurements at 10 K have been performed for BiEuGeO_5. Benzene molecules , present in the proto-planetary nebula CRL 618, are ionized and dissociated by ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray photons originated from the hot central star and by its fast wind. Ionic species and free radicals produced by these processes can lead to the formation of new organic molecules. The aim of this work is to study the photoionization and photodissociation processes of the benzene molecule, using synchrotron radiation and time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Mass spectra were recorded at different energies corresponding to the vacuum UV (21.21 eV) and soft X-ray (282-310 eV) spectral regions. The production of ions from the benzene dissociative photoionization is here quantified, indicating that C_6H_6 is more efficiently fragmented by soft X-ray than UV radiation, where 50% of the ionized benzene molecules survive to UV dissociation while only about 4% resist to C-rays. Alteration of nucleoside diphosphate binding specificity of E. coli elongation factor Tu (EF-Tu) by single amino acid substitution at position 138

A single amino acid substitution (Asp #-># Asn) at position 138 of E. coli EF-Tu was induced in the tufA gene by an M13 phage oligonucleotide site-directed mutagenesis protocol. The mutated tufA gene was then subcloned in a plasmid vector and expressed in maxicells. The properties of ["3"5S]methionine labelled mutant and wild type EF-Tu's were compared by in vitro assays. Mutant and wild-type EF-Tu's bound EF-Ts with approximately equal affinities. The 138-Asn mutation greatly reduced the protein's affinity for GDP; however, this mutation dramatically increased the proteins affinity for XDP. The mutant protein forms a stable complex with phe-tRNA and XTP, which binds to ribosomes; whereas, it does not form a complex with phe-tRNA and GTP. These results suggest that in EF-Tu x NDP complexes amino acid residue 138 must interact with the substituent on C-2 of the purine ring. A REAL-TIME COAL CONTENT/ORE GRADE (C2OC) SENSOR

This is the final report of a three year DOE funded project titled ''A real-time coal content/ore grade (C{sub 2}OG) sensor''. The sensor, which is based on hyperspectral imaging technology, was designed to give a machine vision assay of ore or coal. Sensors were designed and built at Resonon, Inc., and then deployed at the Stillwater Mining Company core room in southcentral Montana for analyzing platinum/palladium ore and at the Montana Tech Spectroscopy Lab for analyzing coal and other materials. The Stillwater sensor imaged 91' of core and analyzed this data for surface sulfides which are considered to be pathfinder minerals for platinum/palladium at this mine. Our results indicate that the sensor could deliver a relative ore grade provided tool markings and iron oxidation were kept to a minimum. Treatment of prostatic cancer using daily intermittent multiportal therapy (DIMT) technique

In the treatment of prostatic cancer using a newly proposed intermittent multiportal therapy (DIMT), acute reactions, change in tumor marker levels, and complications more than 6 months after treatment were evaluated. From June 1989 to September 1990, 26 patients with prostatic cancer (stage A2, 3 patients; B, 9; C, 2; D, 10; recurrence, 2) were treated. Fifteen patients were followed up for more than one year, with a mean period of 11.6 months. The treatment schedule is 52.5 Gy in 16 fractions in 4 weeks for radical treatment, and 30.0 Gy in 8 fractions in 2 weeks for palliative treatment. The 360 degree rotation about the patient was divided into 16 fractions, and 2 opposing fractions were used in one day as parallel opposed portals to treat the target volume. Transport and superconducting properties of RNi{sub 2}B{sub 2}C (R=Y, Lu) single crystals

The in-plane resistivity, in-plane absolute thermopower, and upper critical field measurements are reported for single-crystal samples of YNi{sub 2}B{sub 2}C and LuNi{sub 2}B{sub 2}C superconductors. The in-plane resistivity shows metallic behavior and varies approximately linearly with temperature near room temperature (RT) but shows nearly quadratic behavior in temperature at low temperatures. The YNi{sub 2}B{sub 2}C and LuNi{sub 2}B{sub 2}C single-crystal samples exhibit large transverse magnetoresistance ({approx}6{endash}8{percent} at 45 kOe) in the ab plane. The absolute thermopower S(T) is negative from RT to the superconducting transition temperature T{sub c}. Its magnitude at RT is a few times of the value for a typical good metal. S(T) is approximately linear in temperature between {approx}150 K and RT. Influence of gamma-, electron and neutron radiation on photoelectric properties of TlGaSe_2 single crystals is investigated too. The present work deals with experimental results relative to X-ray dosimetric characteristics of TlGaSe_2 crystals at 300 K. In 1999, the plasma parameters of reversed shear (RS) plasmas had been extended in 1) DT-equivalent fusion power gain Q_D_T"e"q - 0.5 (n_D(0)#tau#_ET_i(0) - 4x10"2"0 m"-"3#centre dot#keV#centre dot#s) for 0.8 s and 2) full non-inductive current drive with 80% of the bootstrap current fraction. Physics of the internal transport barriers (ITBs) in RS plasmas, including the energy transport and the formation of ITB, were extensively studied. A nearly full current drive (92% non-inductively) was obtained with negative ion based neutral beam (NNB) injection (360 keV, 3.4 MW) in a high #beta#_p H-mode plasma (I_p=1.5 MA, B_T=3.7 T, q_9_5=4.2) with high plasma performance (#beta#_N=2.4 and H_8_9=2.56). Numerical models were used to establish the possible meteorological and ozone air-quality impacts of increased urban albedo and vegetative fraction, i.e., ''cool-city'' strategies that can mitigate the urban heat island (UHI), significantly reduce urban energy consumption, and improve thermal comfort, particularly during periods of hot weather in summer. Atom order was determined by direct methods from X-ray single-crystal counter data for the crystal structures of tau{sub 8}-Ce{sub 3}Pd{sub 4}Si{sub 4} (U{sub 3}Ni{sub 4}Si{sub 4}-type, Immm; a=0.41618(1), b=0.42640(1), c=2.45744(7) nm), tau{sub 16}-Ce{sub 2}Pd{sub 14}Si (own structure type, P4/nmm; a=0.88832(2), c=0.69600(2) nm) and also for tau{sub 18}-CePd{sub 1-x}Si{sub x} (x=0.07; FeB-type, Pnma; a=0.74422(5), b=0.45548(3), c=0.58569(4) nm). Rietveld refinements established the atom arrangement in the structures of tau{sub 5}-Ce{sub 3}PdSi{sub 3} (Ba{sub 3}Al{sub 2}Ge{sub 2}-type, ...
