Using Pd and Ag L3,2-edge x-ray-absorption near edge structures (XANES) and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, we have investigated the charge distribution in a series of Pd-Ag alloys (Pd3Ag, PdAg, and PdAg3) from a local perspective. It is found that, relative to the pure element, both Pd and Ag gain d and lose non-d (s and p) charge upon alloying. The results are discussed in terms of band filling, rehybridization, electronegativity, and electroneutrality considerations. The possibility of using the L3,2-edge XANES white line to circumvent the need of an appropriate volume for charge transfer discussions and for other applications are noted.

Perovskite-type cobaltates in the system La2Co1+z(MgxTi1-x)1-zO6 were studied for z=0?x?0.6 and 0?xoC. The space group symmetry of the structure changes from P21/n via Pbnm to R3-bar c with both increasing Mg content and increasing Co content. The La2Co(MgxTi1-x)O6 (z=0) compounds show anti-ferromagnetic couplings of the magnetic moments for the Co below 15 K for x=0, 0.1 and 0.2. XANES spectra show for the compositions 0?x?0.5 a linear decrease in the L3/(L3+L2) Co-L2,3 edge branching ratio with x, in agreement with a decrease of the average Co ion spin-state, from a high-spin to a lower-spin-state, with decreasing nominal Co2+ ion content. -- Graphical abstract: XRPD patterns for perovskite compounds along the lines La2Co(MgxTi1-x)O6 and La2Co1+z(Mg0.5Ti0.5)1-zO6. Cerium L_3XANES (x-ray-absorption near-edge-structure) spectra were analyzed to separate Ce moment contributions and mixed valence (MV) in complex magnetic silicides CePd_2_-_xMn_xSi_2 (0#<=#x#<=#2). The Ce valence mixing does not vary linearly with x, but increases rapidly for x#>=#1.5. The associated moment collapse correlates with pronounced deviations of the unit-cell volume from Vegard law and the onset of structural instability. Reorientation of [001] Mn 3d antiferromagnetic order for x<2 appears to rapidly suppress the weak Ce valence mixing coexisting with antiferromagnetic order in CeMn_2Si_2.
Manganese model complexes, relevant to the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) in photosynthesis, were studied with Mn K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES), Mn Kb X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), and vibrational spectroscopy. A more detailed understanding was obtained of the influence of nuclearity, overall structure, oxidation state, and ligand environment of the Mn atoms on the spectra from these methods. This refined understanding is necessary for improving the interpretation of spectra of the OEC. Mn XANES and Kb XES were used to study a di-(mu)-oxo and a mono-(mu)-oxo di-nuclear Mn compound in the (III,III), (III,IV), and (IV,IV) oxidation states. XANES spectra show energy shifts of 0.8 - 2.2 eV for 1-electron oxidation-state changes and 0.4 - 1.8 eV for ligand-environment changes. The shifts observed for Mn XES spectra were approximately 0.21 eV for oxidation ...
Angular dependence from L_3-subshell to M-shell vacancy transfer probabilities for selected heavy elements from Au to U have been measured by using a Si(Li) detector coupled to a model 1024 computerized multi-channel analyzer. Because the angular dependence from L_3-subshell to M-shell vacancy transfer probabilities is not found in the literature, to the best of our knowledge there are no experimental values for worked elements. Therefore, the results for the elements obtained in the present study constitute the first experimental measurements; the comparison has been not made with other experimental and theoretical results. It has been observed that angular dependence from L_3-subshell to M-shell vacancy transfer probabilities increase with increasing cos #theta#.
Experimentally, a feasibility study for adsorption and catalytic pyrolysis of spill oils on Cu/ZSM-5 for recycling of light oils has been conducted in the present work. The adsorption and pyrolysis of model compounds such as heptane, toluene, and diesel (to stimulate the spill oils) on Cu/ZSM-5 have been investigated on a continuous fixed-bed reactor. By component fitted X-ray absorption near edge structural (XANES) spectroscopy, catalytic active species such as metallic copper (Cu) (77-84%) and Cu2O (6-7%) are found in the channels of ZSM-5 during pyrolysis of heptane or toluene. Pyrolysis of diesel effected by Cu/ZSM-5 yields gas (C1-C5) (32%) and light oil (68%) that can be used as auxiliary fuels.
The X-ray photoacoustic spectra of copper and brass (64.7 wt.% Cu and 35.3 wt.% Zn) have been measured at XANES (X-ray absorption near-edge structure) regions using synchrotron radiation. These spectra were compared with optical density of X-ray spectra. It is shown that the information derived from XANES is also included in the X-ray photoacoustic spectrum which reflects the heat production processes in copper and brass. However, the results showed that the increases and changes of the photoacoustic signal were different from those of the X-ray absorption coefficient at XANES regions. (author).
The present thesis presents two different aspects of my work in the L3 experiment, which are on one side the search for supersymmetric particles, the scalar leptons, in two different topologies 'electron + X + E' and '2 leptons + 2 photons + E', each of them being related to two theoretical SUSY models, m-SUGRA and GMSB. On the other side my work has been completed by the study of the BGO crystal electromagnetic calorimeter of L3, and the calibration of the electromagnetic calorimeter EGAP. After the essential motivations being reviewed, the production and disintegration modes are detailed concerning the scalar lepton sector at LEP. Then one presents the analysis techniques which I used to perform my selection, and also the results obtained from the data collected by L3 for center of mass energies between ...

The local environment of Ca dopants in barium titanate, BaTiO_3, is investigated by Ca K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. In conjunction with experiments, first-principles calculations by two methods are systematically made. The projector-augmented wave (PAW) method is used to optimize the local structure and obtain the formation energy. The augmented plane wave plus local orbitals method is adopted to obtain theoretical XANES spectra. A comparison between experimental and theoretical XANES spectra shows that Ca dopants are located at the Ba"2"+ sites forming Ca"2"+. Formation energy calculations of Ca doped BaTiO_3 by the PAW method also give the same results. The Ca atom in BaTiO_3 is off-centering in comparison with the Ba site in BaTiO_3. The off-centering of Ca atom is newly revealed by the combination of XANES spectroscopy and first-principles DFT calculations.
By the linear augmented plane wave method (APW) the energy zone of silver and technetium structure is calculated. The potential has been determined by means of superposition of atomic charge densities according to slater exchange method. Total and partial state densities have been calculated by the tetrahedron method. The APW-method convergence on the example of silver is studied, the comparison with the calculation results by the APW method and other data is carried out. The APW method high efficiency is pointed out. In dipole approximation the intensity distribution in L"3, M"5 N"3 technetium emission spectra is calculated.
Abstract A series of small phosphazene ligands with pendant 6-phenyl-2,2--bipyridyl moieties, namely L1 [N3P3(OPh)5(OPhbpyPh)], L2 [N3P3(biph)2(OPhbpyPh)2], L3 [N3P3(tBubiph)2(OPhbpyPh)2], L4 [N3P3(biph)2(OPhbpyPh)Cl] and L5 [N3P3(biph)2(OPhbpyPh)(OPh)] [OPhbpyPh = 4-(4-phenoxy)-6-phenyl-2,2--bipyridine, OPh = phenoxy, biph = 2,2--oxybiphenyl and tBubiph = 4,4--di-tert-butyl-2,2--oxybiphenyl], have been used to synthesise the new cyclometallated palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes [(L1-H)PdCl], [(L1-H)PtCl], [(L1-H)(PdCl)2], [(L3-H)(PdCl)2], [(L4-H)PtCl], [(L5-H)PtCl] and the rhenium(I) complex [L5Re(CO)3Cl]. Metal nanoparticles have many potential technological applications. Biological routes to the synthesis of these particles have been proposed including production by vascular plants, known as phytoextraction. While many studies have looked at metal uptake by plants, particularly with regard to phytoremediation and hyperaccumulation, few have distinguished between metal deposition and metal salt accumulation. This work describes the uptake of AgNO{sub 3}, Na{sub 3}Ag(S{sub 2}O{sub 3}){sub 2}, and Ag(NH{sub 3}){sub 2}NO{sub 3} solutions by hydroponically grown Brassica juncea and the quantitative measurement of the conversion of these salts to silver metal nanoparticles. Using X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) to determine the metal speciation within the plants, combined with atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) for total Ag, the quantity of reduction of Ag{sup I} to Ag{sup 0} is reported. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) ...
The n=4 Aurivillius phase, Bi5Ti3CrO15, was synthesised by solid state reaction. Rietveld analysis of high resolution neutron diffraction data demonstrated this material to adopt the polar space group A21am at room temperature, transforming to the aristotype I4/mmm structure above 650 oC. This phase transition is coincident with an anomaly in DSC signal and relative permittivity, which are characteristic of a ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition. Bi5Ti3CrO15 exhibits paramagnetic behaviour at low temperature, with short range antiferromagnetic interactions, but no evidence for long range magnetic ordering. This is considered a consequence of significant disorder of Ti and Cr over the available octahedral sites, as demonstrated by analysis of neutron diffraction data. -- Graphical abstract: We report here the synthesis, structure and characterisation of the n=4 Aurivillius phase Bi5Ti3CrO15. Non-linear realisations of the groups SU(2), SO(1,4) and SO(2,4) are analysed, described by the coset spaces SU(2)/U(1), SO(1,4)/SO(1,3) and SO(2,4)/SO(1,3) x SO(1,1). The Lie algebras of certain special unitary and special orthogonal groups are studied and their projection operators are determined in order to facilitate the above analyses, in particular that of SO(2,4)/SO(l,3) x SO(1,1). The analysis consists of determining the transformation properties of the Goldstone bosons, constructing the most general possible Lagrangian for the realisations and finding the metric of the coset space.
The ability to cope with environmental stress may be expensive in terms of energy and this cost of tolerance is suspected to have negative counterparts such as reduced growth and fecundity. To date, condition indices based on biometric measurements are currently used in bivalves or fish but do not exist in endobenthic worms, despite their interest as bioindicators for the sedimentary compartment in which the major part of pollutants is stored in aquatic environments. In the present work, several biometric variables (jaw and total body length, number of segments, the length of the first three segments L3, wet or dry weight) were measured in the ragworm Nereis diversicolor originating from clean (Authie) and polluted (Seine) estuaries (France) to study size-weight relationships. The producti...

Nanosized particles are important because of their unique properties, different from the bulk, which leads to their enhanced catalytic, photocatalytic and electronic properties. This work has dealt with three different nanoparticle systems in the context of three different aspects of nanoparticle properties: (a) photocatalytis (TiO2/metal) system, (b) luminescence (CdSe) (c) alloying (Pt-Ag and Pd-Ag). The initial photocatalytic enhancement obtained by adding noble metal on semiconductor nanoparticles, degrades as fast as in 15 minutes and questions their long-term performance. XANES measurements on such irradiated systems like TiO2/Au, TiO2/Pt, TiO2/Ir indicates a positive oxidation state of these noble metals which renders them as recombination centers for photo-excited electrons and explains the decreased photocurrent. The oxidation is caused by holes. The EXAFS results also indicate a change of the interfacial structure under the effect of UV-irradiation, thus ...
The /sup 40/Ca(p,n)/sup 40/Sc reaction was studied at 134 MeV. Neutron energy spectra were measured by the time-of-flight technique with resolutions of 220 keV at angles from 0"0 to 41"0 and 415 keV out to 62"0. The 2"-,3"-,4"-,5"- band of states based on the (f/sub 7/2/,d/sub 3/2//sup -1/) 1p1h structure was observed at low excitation energies, in good agreement with known analog states in /sup 40/Ca and /sup 40/K. The shapes of the cross-section and analyzing-power angular distributions are in good agreement with distorted-wave impulse-approximation calculations using simple 1p1h (Tamm-Dancoff approximation) shell-model wave functions. A relatively strong transition to a state at E/sub x/ = 2.3 MeV with L = 3 is identified tentatively as a 4"- state with the predominant 1p1h structure (1f/sub 7/2/,2s/sub 1/2//sup -1/).
This investigation was carried out during the two seasons of 1998/1999 and 1999/2000 at the experimental farm belonging to the plant research department, nuclear research center, atomic energy authority in Inshas to evaluate four lupin mutant lines (L_1, L_2, L_3 and L_4) along with their original mother varieties giza 1 and giza 2 under different levels and nitrogen fertilizer levels. The results indicated that seed yield/ plant and its effective components number and weight of pods/plant were significantly higher in all the mutant lines as compared to their parents either in the first or second seasons. Concerning the effect of irrigation intervals on yield and its components for developed mutants and their mother varieties as well as the results gave an evidence that the wider interval showed the lesser values for yield and most of yield components. Obtained data also revealed that yield attributes of lupin mutants and their parents were ...
The effects of therapeutic levels of radiation on the axial properties of the primate vertebral column were studied. Seven male rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were irradiated with a single does of 1300 cGy to the specific lumbar vertebrae of L2, L3, and L4. Three additional animals served as controls. Radiographs were taken before the radiation treatment and just prior to sacrifice to determine density changes in the bone. The animal subjects were sacrificed 105 days following the radiation exposure. Biomechanical testing was completed on lumbar levels 2 and 3 to identify changes in strength characteristics following radiation treatment. Histomorphometric analysis of lumbar vertebrae level 4 was completed to identify volume and surface density changes as well as cellular changes. Tetracycline, dicarbomethylaminomethyl fluorescein (DCAF), and xylenol orange were used as bone labeling agents to aid in the histomorphometry ...
Charge flow and valence/d-band behavior in ion-beam-mixed (IBM) Pd1-xAgx (x = 0.5-0.9) alloys have been studied by X-ray photoemission measurement of the valence bands and of core-level binding energy shifts and X-ray absorption near-edge structure. We correlated the observed Ag 3d5/2 core-level shifts in these IBM alloys, relative to the elemental Ag, with the White Line area changes at the Pd and Ag L3-edge to investigate the charge redistribution at the Ag site. The results indicate that there is a decrease in sp-like conduction electron and a negligible change in the number of d-electrons at the Ag site upon alloying. These results are in line with our previous results in which Pd gains d-charges and loses sp-type charges. This electron redistribution due to hybridization in the alloy leads small net charge transfer from the Ag site to the Pd site in accordance with electronegativity predictions. This result is ...
L-[3-"1"8F]-#alpha#-methyltyrosine ("1"8F-FMT) is an amino-acid tracer for positron-emission tomography (PET). We have conducted a clinicopathologic study to elucidate the correlation of angiogenesis with "1"8F-FMT and 2-["1"8F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ("1"8F-FDG) uptake in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Thirty-seven NSCLC patients were enrolled in this study, and two PET studies with "1"8F-FMT and "1"8F-FDG were performed. Uptake of PET tracers was evaluated with standardized uptake value. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), CD31, CD34, L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1) and Ki-67 labeling index of the resected tumors were analyzed by immunohistochemical staining, and correlated with the clinicopathologic variables and the uptake of PET tracers. The median VEGF rate was 45% (range, 10-78%). High expression was seen in 30 patients (81%, 30/37). VEGF ...
We obtain x-ray absorption near-edge structures (XANES) by solving the equation of motion for the two-particle Green's function for the electron-hole pair, the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE), within the all-electron full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method (FPLAPW). The excited states are calculated for the Li K-edge in the insulating solids LiF, Li_2O and Li_2S, and absorption spectra are compared with independent particle results using the random phase approximation (RPA), as well as supercell calculations using the core-hole approximation within density functional theory (DFT). The binding energies of strongly bound excitations are determined in the materials, and core-exciton wavefunctions are demonstrated for LiF.
The development of new efficient afterglow phosphors is currently hampered by a limited understanding of the persistent luminescence mechanism. Radioluminescence (RL) and x-ray absorption measurements on the persistent phosphor SrAl2O4:Eu,Dy were combined to reveal possible valence state changes for the rare earth (co)dopants. Traps in the phosphor material are quickly filled when exposing thermally emptied SrAl2O4:Eu,Dy powder to x rays. On the same time scale a partial oxidation of Eu2+ to Eu3+ is observed by x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES), while for the trivalent dysprosium the valence state remains unchanged. The impact of these observations on the recently proposed models for persistent luminescence is discussed.

Expressed sequence tags (ESTs) of the maxillary galea of the silkworm were analyzed to identify proteins involved in food selection systems. From the 1251 redundant genes of the ESTs, we identified 7 odorant-binding protein-like genes (bmObpL), 6 takeout-like genes (bmToL), and 6 chemosensory protein genes (bmCsp). Quantitative RT-PCR analysis indicated that bmObpL1, bmObpL2, bmObpL3, bmObpL5, bmToL1, bmToL3, and bmorCsp15 were predominantly expressed in the larval oral appendages, such as the maxilla, labrum, labium and antenna. Immunocytochemical analysis indicated that the proteins of bmObpL1, bmObpL3, and bmToL1 were localized in the gustatory chemosensilla on the maxillary galea and olfactory sensilla in the antenna. The proteins encoded by bmObpL1 and bmObpL3 were detected in the gus...

M shell x-ray production cross sections in thick targets of Pb, Th and U by K x-rays of Rb, Nb and Mo respectively have been measured. As the incident K x-ray energies are above the L_3 edge but below L_2 edge energies of the respective target elements under reference, the M x-rays are produced not only due to direct interaction of incident photons with M shell electrons but also due to the shift of the L_3 subshell vacancies to the M shell. The experiment has been performed using a double reflection geometrical setup with a 1 Curie"2"4"1Am gamma ray source and a Si (Li) x-ray spectrometer. The measured values have been compared with those calculated using known values of M and L_3 subshell photoionisation cross sections and fluorescence yields etc., wherever possible. The component of the percentage contribution due to shift of ...
A burgeoning interest in technetium coordination chemistry has been spurred by its widespread use in nuclear medicine. Recent focus has been on the design and preparation of new technetium complexes, the lipophilicity, polarity, and overall charge of which can be readily altered by simple substitutions in the molecular framework of the ligand in order to optimize the biodistribution and target specific organs. Examples are cationic (Cardiolite) and neutral (Ceretec) technetium complexes, used as myocardial and brain imaging agents, respectively. The authors have been pursuing a continuing study of tris(3-hydroxy-4-pyridinonato)gallium and -indium complexes that are water soluble, are hydrolytically stable, and are of varying lipophilicity and neutral charge. Studies of in vivo in rabbits and mice have revealed that several of these cationic complexes may be useful as morphologic kidney imaging agents, with ["9"9"mTc(pap)_3]"+ showing elevated ...
We report the synthesis of four diorganotin(IV) compounds of Schiff base pyruvic acid hydrazone derivatives formulated as [R2SnLY]2, where L1 is 2-SC4H3CON2C(CH3)CO2 with Y = CH3CH2CH2CH2OH, R = n-Bu (1); L2 is C6H5CON2C(CH3)CO2 with Y = CH3CH2OH, R = p-F-Bz (2); L3 is 2-HOC6H4CON2C(CH3)CO2 with YH2O, R = p-CN-Bz (3); and L4 is 4-NO2-C6H4CON2C(CH3)CO2 with YCH3CH2OH, R = Bz (4). The structures of all compounds have been established by a combination of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, 1H and 119Sn NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Studies reveal that four ligands present the same coordination mode with tin center, which all present tridentate ONO donor Schiff bases and coordinate to the tin center in an enolic form. In compounds 1-4, each tin atom is seven...
Neutron-hole states in /sup 87/Sr were studied by means of the /sup 88/Sr("3He,#alpha#)/sup 87/Sr reaction at 36 MeV. Angular distribution measurements were carried out from 3"0 to 41"0 (lab) and analyzed with the zero-range distorted-wave Born approximation method. Spectroscopic factors have been determined for about 50 discrete levels in /sup 87/Sr located below 6 MeV excitation energy and for the three lowest isobaric analog states 2p(3/2, 1f(5/2, and 2p(1/2 observed around 11 MeV. Many l = 1 and l = 3 discrete levels are observed in the 3--6 MeV excitation energy range. In addition, a large part of the 1f-2p strength is found to lie in the higher-lying continuum up to 13 MeV (about 10% and 40% for the l = 1 and 3 contributions, respectively). The distribution of the 1f-2p neutron-hole strength is compared to previous data on neighboring nuclei /sup 89/Zr and /sup 91/Mo. In addition, angular distributions for some ...
Microdamage naturally occurs in bone tissue as a result of cyclic loading placed on the body from normal daily activities. While it is usually repaired through the bone turnover process, accumulation of microdamage may result in reduced bone quality and increased fracture risk. It is unclear whether certain areas of bone are more susceptible to microdamage than others due to compositional differences. This study examines whether areas of microdamaged bone are chemically different than undamaged areas of bone. Bone samples (L3 vertebrae) were harvested from 15 dogs. Samples were stained with basic fuchsin, embedded in poly-methylmethacrylate, and cut into 5-(micro)m-thick sections. Fuchsin staining was used to identify regions of microdamage, and synchrotron infrared microspectroscopic imaging was used to determine the local bone composition. Results showed that microdamaged areas of bone were chemically different than the ...
Crystalline MnV{sub 2}O{sub 6} has been synthesized by a polymer gellation method and investigated for its physical and electrochemical properties as an anode material for Li secondary battery. The physical characterization was carried out by thermal analysis (TG/DTA), FT-IR and SEM. Structural analysis by powder XRD and spectroscopic analysis by XANES showed that the synthesized compound is MnV{sub 2}O{sub 6} with brannerite structure. The Li insertion of MnV{sub 2}O{sub 6} anode during the first charge showed a large capacity of about 1400 mAh/g, accompanied by irreversible structural transformation into amorphous material. Despite its structural transformation to amorphous during the first lithiation, subsequent cycles showed a capacity of about 800 mAh/g. This paper presents the advantage of this material over existing anode material and discusses the mechanism underlying the electrode process.
Crystalline MnMoO{sub 4} was synthesized using a conventional solid reaction method and investigated for its physical and electrochemical properties as an anode material for Li secondary battery. The reversible amount of Li insertion/removal of MnMoO{sub 4} anode during the first cycle was about 800 mA h/g, accompanied by irreversible structural transformation into amorphous material. The amorphization during the first Li insertion was investigated by structural analysis using XRD of electrode. The charge compensation during Li insertion/removal was examined by measurement of X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) spectroscopy. Despite its irreversible structural transformation to amorphous during the first lithiation, subsequent cycles showed a reasonable cyclability. Spectral-luminescent characteristics of Sr2Y8(SiO4)6O2: Eu powder crystal phosphor with the apatite structure and high-intensity luminescence of Eu3+ ions have been studied. The charge state of europium in the samples has been characterized by means of X-ray L3-adsorption spectroscopy. It was established that Eu3+ forms two types of optical centers. Besides, luminescence of Eu2+ions was found. Reduction Eu3+#->#Eu2+ was considered, which may be due to VSr|| vacancy formation in the 4f crystal lattice position and to negative charge transfer by this vacancy to two EuY3+ ions. Thus, in the silicate lattice there exist inhomogeneously distributed oxygen-deficient centers, which are responsible for nonradiative transfer of excitation energy to Eu3+ and Eu2+ ions. To study electron-vibrational interactions in the crystal phosphor samples, their IR and Raman spectra were examined. In the luminescence ...

Pfirsch-Schlueter (P-S) current is an inherent property of a finite pressure toroidal equilibrium of tokamak and stellarator. However, it was pointed out recently (V.D. Pustovitov, Nuclear Fusion 36 (1996) 583) that the P-S current would be suppressed completely if the external vertical field could be adjusted to satisfy the condition {omega}=<{omega}> in an l=3 stellarator. Here {omega}=<B tilde{sup 2}>/B{sub 0}{sup 2}-2{epsilon} cos{theta}, l is a pole number, |B tilde| the vacuum helical magnetic field, B{sub 0} the toroidal field, {epsilon} the inverse aspect ratio, {theta} the poloidal angle and <...> denotes the average over the toroidal angle. An example of such a stellarator equilibrium is presented in this paper. For this stellarator equilibrium, behavior of rotational transform and Boozer magnetic spectrum is clarified when the pressure is increased. Both formation of helical magnetic axis and ...
XAFS data of metallic glass Al_0_._9_1La_0_._0_9 and a crystalline phase Al_1_1La_3 formed by annealing of the glass were measured at the La L_3 edge at T=12 K and analyzed using the radial distribution function method. The shortest La-Al distance appeared to be distinctively smaller within the glass than in the crystal. This difference decreases the disparity in size of La and Al in the alloy, allowing their mixing in the glassy state. ((orig.)).
Eu-#alpha#-SiAlON (Eu_m_/_2Si_1_2_-_m_-_nAl_m_+_nO_nN_1_6_-_n) was synthesized with nominal compositions having small m and n values, by firing the powder mixture of Eu_2Si_5N_8, #alpha#-Si_3N_4, AlN, and Al_2O_3 at 1900 "oC for 6 h under 1 MPa nitrogen atmosphere. The ratio of the oxidation state of Eu"2"+/Eu"3"+ was estimated from the X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurement. The observed X-ray absorption near edge spectrum (XANES) showed that the Eu ion in Eu-#alpha#-SiAlON was mainly in divalent state but also coexisted with a small amount of Eu in the trivalent state. The crystal structure of Eu-#alpha#-SiAlON was refined by the Rietveld analysis of the X-ray powder diffraction patterns. The lattice constants of the samples increased with increasing m and n values. The excitation band of Eu-#alpha#-SiAlON ranged from the ultraviolet to the visible light region and a broad emission band centered at about 590 nm were observed. The emission intensity ...
A new iron phosphate (NH4)4Fe3(OH)2F2[H3(PO4)4] has been synthesized hydrothermally at HF concentrations from 0.5 to 1.2 mL. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals its three-dimensional open-framework structure (monoclinic, space group P21/n (No. 14), a=6.2614(13) A, b=9.844(2) A, c=14.271(3) A, ?=92.11(1)o, V=879.0(3) A3). This structure is built from isolated linear trimers of corner-sharing Fe(III) octahedra, which are linked by (PO4) groups to form ten-membered-ring channels along [1 0 0]. This isolated, linear trimer of corner-sharing Fe(III) octahedra, [(FeO4)3(OH)2F2], is new and adds to the diverse linkages of Fe polyhedra as secondary building units in iron phosphates. The trivalent iron at octahedral sites for the title compound has been confirmed by synchrotron Fe K-edge XANES spectra and magnetic measurements. The MgH{sub 2} composite doped with 1 mol% Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5} by ball milling for 20 h desorbed hydrogen up to {approx}6 mass% in the temperature range from 200 to 250 {sup o}C at the heating rate of 5 {sup o}C/min under a purified helium flow. After dehydrogenation at 200 {sup o}C, the product showed remarkable hydrogen absorption kinetics. A large amount of gaseous hydrogen up to {approx}4.5 mass% was absorbed even at room temperature under 1 MPa hydrogen pressure within 15 s and finally its capacity reached up to 5 mass%. Furthermore, the valence state of Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5} doped in MgH{sub 2} was examined by X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurement. The results indicated that additive Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5} was reduced by MgH{sub 2} during mechanical milling. This suggests that the Nb compound, ...
The ALICE experimental area management team faces various challenges when it comes to sharing scarce resources, indispensable to any efficient installation in a category one worksite. Space, cranes, jigs, and personnel with key competences have to be carefully allocated to activities so as to avoid slowing down work progress. To this intent, a resource loaded planning has been developed that allows highlighting coactivities and prioritizing critical tasks. It uses the built-in capabilities of Microsoft Project. The use of this scheduling tool leads to a more efficient use of time and a safer work environment. The installation sequence resulting from this schedule is presented in this paper. The first part of the sequence focuses on the revision of the coils in the SX2 building. The dipole has then to be installed in the RB26 side of the UX25 cavern. This complex and resource intensive activity has to be performed in parallel with the services installation inside the ...
The effect of the #+-# 0.75 T external magnetic field on the K_#alpha#_1, K_#alpha#_2, K_#beta#_'_1 and K_#beta#_'_2 x-ray production cross sections and radiative vacancy transfer probabilities from K-shell to L2 and L3 subshells and M-shell for ferromagnetic Nd, Gd and Dy and paramagnetic Eu and Ho have been investigated, using the 59.5 keV incident photons. K-shell fluorescence yields and K x-ray intensity ratios for these elements have been determined in the external magnetic field also. The K x-rays from different targets were detected using a high-resolution Si(Li) semiconductor detector. For B = 0, the present experimental results were compared with the experimental and theoretical data in the literature. The results show that K-shell fluorescence parameters such as photoionization cross section, fluorescence yield, radiation rates, vacancy transfer probabilities and spectral linewidth can change owing to the applied magnetic field. ...
The KLL Auger electron spectrum of "8"8Sr generated in the EC-decay of "8"8Y has been analyzed at the instrumental resolution of 11 eV using a combined electrostatic spectrometer. Energies and relative intensities of the all nine transitions were determined and compared with theoretical predictions. Our value of 12067.3(12) eV measured for the absolute energy of the dominant KL_2L_3("1D_2) transition was found to be higher by 7.4 eV (i.e., more than 3#sigma#) than that one obtained in a measurement with external excitation. The discrepancy indicates substantial influence of the 'atomic structure effect' on absolute transition energies in our experiment. Very good agreement of the measured 0.14(3) and predicted 0.12 values for the KL_1L_2("3P_0/"1P_1) Auger transition intensity ratio clearly proved the predicted strong influence of the relativistic effects on the KL_1L_2("3P_0) transition rate even at Z = 38.
X-ray crystal structures of L-3,4-dihydroxy-2-butanone-4-phosphate synthase from Magnaporthe grisea are reported for the E-SO{sub 4}{sup 2-}, E-{sub 4}{sup 2-}-Mg{sup 2+}, E-SO{sub 4}{sup 2-}-Mn{sup 2+}, E-SO{sub 4}{sup 2-}-Mn{sup 2+}-glycerol, and E-SO{sub 4}{sup 2-}-Zn{sup 2+} complexes with resolutions that extend to 1.55, 0.98, 1.60, 1.16, and 1.00 {angstrom}, respectively. Active-site residues of the homodimer are fully defined. The structures were used to model the substrate ribulose 5-phosphate in the active site with the phosphate group anchored at the sulfate site and the placement of the ribulose group guided by the glycerol site. The model includes two Mg{sup 2+} cations that bind to the oxygen substituents of the C2, C3, C4, and phosphate groups of the substrate, the side chains of Glu37 and His153, and water molecules. The position of the metal cofactors and the substrate's phosphate group are further stabilized by an ...
In the present paper the contamination levels of trace and toxic metals in drinking water collected from Tarapur industrial area, Thane were investigated. The concentrations of trace and toxic metals (Pb, Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Se, V, Zn, Mn, Mo, Co, As and Ba) were determined simultaneously using Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES). The results were compared with international water quality guidelines (WHO, 2008) and were found within the permissible limits. The quality assurance was checked by standard addition method and spike recovery. The concentration of Pb, Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Se, V, Zn, Mn, Mo, Co, As and Ba varies from 4.25-19.62 #mu#g/L, 0.13-1.49 #mu#g/L, 0.60-65.55 #mu#g/L, 0.46-4.15 #mu#g/L, <0.1 #mu#g/L, 0.5- 9.35 #mu#g/L, <0.5 #mu#g/L, 3.41-99.64 #mu#g/L, 0.80-9.62 #mu#g/L, 0.30-1.48 #mu#g/L, <0.1-0.90 #mu#g/L, <0.63 #mu#g/L and 0.71-9.0 #mu#g/L respectively. Similarly Na, K, Ca and Mg varies from ...
We used the tissue distribution of ({sup 14}C)butanol to quantitate regional blood flow in the spinal cord (RSCBF) of pentobarbital-anesthetized, normothermic rats in which segmental local cooling pentobarbital-anesthetized, normothermic rats in which segmental local cooling of the spinal cord (to 25-28{degrees}C) at vertebral levels C4-C6 (n = 6) or T13-L1 (n = 6) was induced. Thirty minutes later, blood flow measurements were made at seven levels of the spinal cord and in the sciatic nerve trunks and biceps femoris muscles. Sham-cooled rats served as controls (n = 12). In control rats, RSCBF varied between 41.5 +/- 2.4 and 65.1 +/- 3.2 ml.min-1.100 g-1. Local cooling of the C4-C6 cord segment reduced RSCBF by 32%, from 65.1 +/- 3.2 to 44.4 +/- 3.5 ml.min-1.100 g-1 (P less than 0.01). Tissue vascular resistance (R) in the cooled C4-C6 segment was elevated versus control. There were no other changes in RSCBF at the other cord levels or in the cauda equina. Similarly, local cooling of ...
This document deals with the couplings between the W boson and Z and gamma particles. WWZ and WW{gamma} vertex are predicted by the electroweak theory based on the symmetry group SU(2){sub L}*U(1){sub Y}, their existence is confirmed by the measurement of the production cross-section of W pairs at LEP. The effective values of the couplings are modified by the introduction of standard model particle loops at the vertex level, the impact on the coupling value is assessed to reach 10{sup -3}. These loops can also include beyond-the-standard-model particles, their impact is in the magnitude order of 10{sup -3} for most models. The fully description of these loops requires the values of 14 complex parameters whose measurement will give information about the existence of new particles. Nevertheless the number of events at LEP is not sufficient to measure all the parameters simultaneously. As a consequence the analysis is limited to the 3 most promising parameters: g{sub 1}{sup Z}, ...
According to the calculations, intensity of the KL_1L_2("3P_0) Auger transition should drastically increase with increasing atomic number Z due to the relativistic effects. However, this behavior was experimentally proved only for very few elements. A lack of enough precise experimental data in the atomic number region Z<45 does not enable one to distinguish between relativistic and non-relativistic approaches in this region. Thus for Z=38 the KL_1L_2("3P_0/"1P_1) intensity ratio was determined with relative uncertainty of 63 % in the only measurement with external excitation. Here we present results of our investigation of the KLL Auger electron spectrum of "8"8Sr generated in the EC decay of "8"8Y (T_1_/_2= 106.6 d). Electron spectra were measured with the 11 eV instrumental resolution using a combined electrostatic spectrometer. The present value of the KL_2L_3("1D_2) absolute transition energy in Sr is higher by 7.4 eV (i.e. more than ...

Dimensional variability studies and published dimensional variability standards have been used by the foundry industry for years as an indicator of the casting process` ability to produce uniform parts. These studies are an extremely useful tool in the continuous ``dimensional dialogue`` between foundries and customers. The nature of these studies, and of the current tolerancing systems used by casting designers, leaves room for some misinterpretation and misuse of these study results. This paper contains two important discussions. The first part explains exactly what these studies represent. Following this is a brief explanation on dimensional and geometric tolerances and how they communicate dimensional requirements.
This paper gives a summary of a risk study assuming unprotected loss of flow (ULOF) in the SNR 300. This study was initiated in 1979/80 by the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center and performed in close cooperation with Science Applications Inc., Palo Alto, USA, and Interatom Company. Part of the results also was integrated in the 'Risk Related Analysis for the SNR 300' carried out by the Gesellschaft fuer Reactorsicherheit. The character of the study described here is similar to other risk studies like the Reactor Safety Study and the German Risk Study for Nuclear Power Plants. The objectives and the methodology of the analyses are described and its results are discussed. (orig./RW).

Experimental investigation data are systematized of free radical states and processes in irradiated proteins. The investigation is performed by the radiospectral methods. Results are discussed in detail of the study of free radicals electronic structure of amino acids, peptides and proteins formed by the action of ionizing radiation. The specificity is stressed of the study of monocrystalls of these compounds by the method of electronic paramagnetic resonance. The nature is also studied of primary centres formed under the effect of radiation on biologically important compounds and their subsequent reactions in solid and liquid solutions. Ion-radical states of different functional groups of the protein molecule are studied. Prospects of the study and the role of anion-radicals in biological processes are discusses.
Terror management theory (TMT) proposes that people who are reminded of their mortality should be motivated to defend their cultural worldview. Studies 1 and 2 examined whether the TMT worldview defence-buffering effect found in Western cultures could be generalized to Asians in Taiwan. No such effect was found in the present studies. This non-significant result was robust when either a stronger distraction task was used (study 1) or when a subliminal manipulation of mortality salience was utilized (study 2). A meta-analysis, including 24 TMT experiments in East Asia, was also conducted (study 3). The average effect size (d = 0.11, r = 0.055) of worldview defence among these experiments was not significantly different from zero. Study 4 found that mortality salience manipulation also did n...

This report presents the data and results of a site specific case study comparing costs of an overhead line with an underground circuit traversing the same route. The costs used for the overhead line are actual numbers for a line scheduled to be built by a utility. The underground circuit costs were developed using the same criteria of line rating, contingencies, and location. Often cost comparisons between overhead and underground lines are made using figures taken from studies with widely varying assumptions. This project attempts to provide a comparison by studying the costs of overhead and underground lines following the same route and using the same design assumptions. Caution must be used, however, in extending the results of this study beyond its original intent. It is site-specific and may be representative of only one area of the country. 9 refs., 23 figs., 18 tabs.
The synapsin III gene, SYN3, which belongs to the family of synaptic vesicle-associated proteins, has been implicated in the modulation of neurotransmitter release and in synaptogenesis, suggesting a potential role in several neuropsychiatric diseases. Accurate engineering cost estimates are critical in developing bids for new work, and for effective resource allocation and project control. This study reports on design estimating methods found in the literature, and on the results of two empirical studies of how estimating techniques are used in professional practice and their accuracy. The study found great reliance on a classic {open_quotes}activity analysis{close_quotes} approach to estimating design resources, and significant hazards in commonly used parametric techniques. The study found that project managers expect their estimates to be accurate (with 80% confidence interval) of between -10% to +25%. The study also found that actual bids between engineering firms had a much greater range (-40% to +45%) than can be explained by accuracy. Perhaps most importantly the study found that none of the sampled ...
