The astronomical orientation of the urban plan of Alexandria

CERN Document Server

Alexander the Great founded Alexandria in 331 BC. The newly founded town was conceived as an orthogonal grid based on a main longitudinal axis, later called Canopic Road. We analyse here the astronomical orientation of the project and propose that the main axis was deliberately oriented towards the rising sun on the day of birth of Alexander the Great. The argument is admittedly speculative as any Archaeoastronomy argument not backed up by written sources. However, it is nested accurately into the archaeological records and into what is known on the foundation of the town. Further, a topographical analysis is given to sustain the thesis.

Large-scale production of biofuels through biomass (co)-gasification and Fischer Tropsch synthesis

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

In this work the production of sustainable syngas has been investigated for use in a co-production plant for electricity and Fischer Tropsch diesel at the Willem-Alexander Centrale in Buggenum, the Netherlands, and has also been compared to the co-production of SNG. From the analysis for this specific situation it is determined that the co-production of Fischer Tropsch liquids is economically more beneficial than co-production of SNG.

NURE aerial gamma-ray and magnetic reconnaissance survey: southeastern area-Alaska Quadrangles. Volume I. Narrative report

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

A rotary-wing, reconnaissance high sensitivity radiometric and magnetic survey covering the Alaska portion of twenty-nine 1:250,000 UTMS quadrangles. A total of 21,409 line miles (34,455 line kilometers) of data were collected during the 1976 and 1977 flying seasons. This report covers only the Southeastern area comprised of the Skagway, Atlin, Mt. Fairweather, Juneau, Taku River, Sitka, Port Alexander, Sumdum, Petersburg, Bradfield Canal, Craig, Dixon Entrance, Ketchikan, and Prince Rupert NTMS 1:250,000 scale quadrangles which were flown during the 1976 and 1977 seasons. The radiometric data were normalized to 400 feet terrain clearance. The data are presented in the form of computer listings on microfiche and as stacked profile plots. A geologic interpretation of the radiometric and magnetic data is included in this volume.

High voltage high brightness electron accelerator with MITL voltage adder coupled to foilless diode

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The design and analysis of a high brightness electron beam experiment under construction at Sandia National Laboratory is presented. The beam energy is 12 MeV, the current 35 endash 40 kA, the rms radius 0.5 mm, and the pulse duration FWHM 40 ns. The accelerator is SABRE [J. Corley, J. A. Alexander, P. J. Pankuch, C. E. Heath, D. L. Johnson, J. J. Ramirez, and G. J. Denison, in Proceedings of the Eighth International IEEE Pulsed Power Conference, San Diego, California, 1991 (IEEE, New York, 1991), p. 920], a pulsed inductive voltage adder, and the electron source is a magnetically immersed foilless diode. This experiment has as its goal to stretch the technology to the edge and produce the highest possible electron current in a submillimiter radius beam. copyright 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Le leucodistrofie: aspetti clinici e quadri con Tomografia Computerizzata e con Risonanza Magnetica

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Leukodystrophies are inherited white matter diseases due to abnormalities occurring in myelin synthesis and/or maintenance. The most common types of these rare childhood conditions are represented by adrenoleukodystrophy, metachromatic leukodystrophy, Canavan's, Alexander's, Krabbe's, and Pelizaeus-Merzbacher's diseases. Most of them are lethal during childhood, with the exception of the adrenoleukodystrophy-adrenomyeloneuropathy complex, which sometimes, during its early phases, may be cured with a dietary therapy. The aims of this paper are: 1) the description of inheritance factors, pathogenesis, pathological and clinical findings of each of the most frequent childhood leukodystrophies; 2) the description of the most common patterns of these conditions on CT and MR imaging; 3) the evaluation of the diagnostic capabilities of these two imaging techniques and the comparison of their results. Finally, some of the therapies suggested for the mild forms of these ...
