Environmentally friendly individual mobility through the `Zoxy` zinc/air battery system for electric road vehicles; Umweltschonende individuelle Mobilitaet durch das ``Zoxy``-Zink-Luft-Batteriesystem fuer elektrische Strassenfahrzeuge

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

To permit an assessment of the system presented in this paper the data collected up to this point should be complemented by further experience with its practical use in electromobiles and the recovery of zink and the electrolyte. To this end the system is to be tested in electromobiles in 1995 and 1996. If there are no serious problems in the course of these tests and the above-mentioned estimates on economic efficiency are confirmed, then there is much to be said for a large-scale trial of these battery systems in electromobiles in the framework of a pilot project in Karlsruhe. Because of the infrastructure required for recharging, such a project should first be carried out in cooperation with fleet operators. As the recharging technique employed is so simple as to require no great investment and cost-effectiveness should already be achievable with a few tens of vehicles, one can conceive of a whole variety of applications in cooperation with public utilities, ...

Emplacement technology for the direct disposal of spent fuel into deep vertical boreholes

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

In the early sixties it was decided to investigate salt formations on its suitability to host heat generating radioactive waste in Germany. In the reference repository concept consequently the emplacement of vitrified waste canisters in deep vertical boreholes inside a salt mine was considered whereas spent fuel should be disposed of in self shielding casks (type POLLUX) in horizontal drifts. The POLLUX casks, 65 t heavy carbon steel casks, will be laid down on the floor of a horizontal drift in one of the disposal zones to be constructed in the salt dome at the 870 m level. The space between casks and drift walls will be backfilled with crushed salt. The transport, the handling und the emplacement of POLLUX casks were subject of successfully performed demonstration and in situ tests in the nineties and resulted in an adjustment of the atomic law. The borehole disposal concept comprises the emplacement of unshielded canisters with vitrified HLW in boreholes with a diameter of 60 cm and ...

Design of a closed 4 MW spallation target module with heat removal system for an ADS system

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

At the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe the HGF Strategy Fund project entitled 'Innovative Technology to Reduce Radiotoxicity' is performed which delivers an essential scientific contribution to the application oriented fundamental research for Accelerator Driven Systems (ADS). The addressed topics are in the areas of heavy liquid metal technology, thermalhydraulics and materials / corrosion. An ADS consists of three main components: an proton accelerator, a spallation target and a subcritical blanket. The strategic objective of an ADS is the transmutation of long-lived radioactive waste (plutonium, minor actinides and long-lived fission products) into short-lived isotopes or stable elements, thus closing the fuel cycle. The objective of one task of the HGF Strategy Fund Project is the numerical calculation of a closed spallation target module. In a consequent next step such a spallation target can be experimentally investigated at IKET and the numerical results can be ...

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

We performed a comparative study of digitally and conventionally acquired images in gastrointestinal examinations. Radiation dose and spatial resolution were determined in a water phantom. In 676 examinations with either conventional or digital imaging (system: Diagnost 76, DSI) the number of images and the duration of the fluoroscopy time were compared. 101 examinations with digital as well as conventional documentation were evaluated by using 5 criteria describing the diagnostic performance. The entrance dose of the DSI is 12% to 36% of the film/screen system and the spatial resolution of the DSI may be better than that of a film/screen system with a speed of 200. The fluoroscopy time shows no significant difference between DSI and the film/screen technique. In 2 of 4 examination modes significantly more images were produced by the DSI. With exception of the criterion of edge sharpness, DSI yields a significantly inferior assessment compared with the film/screen technique. (orig./MG) ...

The Seismic Risk Explorer - A Scenario Tool for Assessing Seismic Risk

Science.gov (United States)

The Seismic Risk Explorer, an extension for ArcGIS Desktop developed by cedim AG, is a tool for computing the seismic risk, i.e. damage on residential buildings and thereby caused monetary losses for earthquake scenarios. It is based on the research results of the CEDIM (Center for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Technology) research center, located at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ) in Potsdam. With this software tool seismic scenarios can be simulated for a given magnitude, depths and location. The seismic intensity, the resulting mean damage ratio for residential buildings and the seismic risk, expressed as the monetary loss caused by an earthquake can be computed downscaled to communities, postcode areas or even single buildings. Interested end-users are especially insurance companies, but also public authorities which may use the tool for risk management issues.

Use of the ADINA (Automatic Dynamic Incremental Nonlinear Analysis) computer code on a COSA II (Computer Codes for Salt) benchmark computer case of the local area - progress report 1990

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The COSA II (computer codes for salt) benchmark problem has been pursued with the ADINA (Automatic Dynamic Incremental Nonlinear Analysis) program code. With the use of this, the code should be validated by means of experimental data and the ability to reproduce real-life calculation results of the KfK (Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe/Nuclear Research Center in Karlsruhe) should be proven. A successful validation of the code then forms the foundation stone for the ability to use different calculation problems in the final (ultimate) storage. This also accompanies the consequent reaction of replacing the STEALTH (Solids and Thermal Hydraulics Code for EPRI Adapted from LAGRANGE TOODY and HEMP) program which has a number of program-specific weaknesses compared to the ADINA computer code. In order to reproduce the approximate values from the KfK, the same values have been used. Differences were evident in the discretion and the selection of the ...

Past and future upgrades of the gyrotron high voltage cathode power supplies at the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The high voltage/high power DC-cathode power supply for the Gyrotron Test Facility at the Forschungszentrum in Karlsruhe consists of a 12-pulse thyristor star-point-controller, a 130 kV capacitor-bank followed by a tetrode regulator. Originally designed for 80 kV/30 A CW (continous-wave) operation, its operating regime has been extended in line with gyrotron development to pulses of 65 kV/45 A/3 min and more recently to 65 kV/80 A/10 s without any changes to the main load bearing components (thyristors, transformers or power tetrode). This allows testing of gyrotrons in the 0.5 MW (CW), 1 MW (3 min) and 2 MW (10 s) output power range. The paper describes the system, its operation and some critical aspects of the last upgrade, such as the issue of harmonics in the 20 kV distribution mains-grid, the dynamic response of the thyristor-controller and the avoidance of microwave parasitic oscillations in the high power tetrode (a CQK-200-4, developed by ABB, Switzerland ...

Flue Gas Cleanup at Temperatures about 1400 C for a Coal Fired Combined Cycle Power Plant: State and Perspectives in the Pressurized Pulverized Coal Combustion (PPCC) Project

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The PPCC technology, a combined cycle, requires comprehensive cleaning of the flue gases because coal contains a large variety of minerals and other substances. This would lead to fast destruction of the gas turbine blades due to erosion and corrosion. The present specifications of the turbine manufacturers for the required flue gas quality are at a maximum particulate content of 5 mg/m3 s.t.p., diameter of < 5 {micro}m, and a maximum alkali content < 0.01 mg/m3 s.t.p. The PPCC project is aimed at cleaning the flue gases of pressurized coal combustion. This method will be applied at temperature ranges where the ash is in a liquid state and which will be thus cleaned from coarse particulate material by agglomeration and inertial force separators. Appropriate separating methods are also being investigated and developed for the hazardous gaseous contents, e.g. alkali compounds, which are released during the coal combustion process. Innovative clean gas introduction into new cooling tower packing; Innovative Reingaseinleitung in Kuehlturmneubauten

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

In 1991/1992, VEAG decided to convert its 500 MW plants at Jaenschwalde and Boxberg to the latest state of technology. This even included the discharge of the cleaned flue gas through the existing cooling towers. The site of the flue gas desulphurization plant and also the existing cooling tower shells required routeing of the clean gas lines similar to the routes in the existing plants of RWE. The positive experience accrued with the pipework material `glass-fibre reinforced vinyl ester resin` has also led to the selection of this material here. The universally positive experience gained from existing clean gas lines via cooling towers by very different power station operators induced VEAG and its partners also to equip new construction operations in the new Federal states with this technology. Infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm. Endovascular repair with stent grafts; Infrarenales Bauchaortenaneurysma. Endovaskulaere Stent-Graft-Therapie

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

As an alternative to surgery, endovascular therapy with stent grafts has become the second main treatment option for infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms. Unlike surgery, endovascular treatment with stent grafts is also applicable in patients unfit for open repair. Despite current improvements in endovascular repair devices, significant anatomic barriers still exclude this technique for a large number of patients. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound are essential for diagnostics, preintervention planning, and postintervention follow-up of abdominal aneurysms treated with stent grafts. This review covers etiology, pathology, and diagnostic aspects. Materials and methods for endovascular treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms are presented in detail, and clinical results and complications are discussed. (orig.) Tritium Release Behavior from Li_4SiO_4

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

This paper proposes a model to explain tritium release behavior of an irradiated Li_4SiO_4 sample made by Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe. The release curves were obtained in a series of experiments carried out using out-pile temperature programmed desorption techniques in the Kyoto University Reactor (KUR). Tritium release curves obtained for different purge gas compositions (N_2, N_2 + H_2, N_2 + H_2O) were compared for selection of suitable conditions to determine the apparent diffusivity of tritium in a crystal grain of Li_4SiO_4.In the model formation, some mass transfer steps in the bulk of the crystal grain and those on the surface of the grain were taken into account, which were diffusion of tritium in the grain, adsorption and desorption of water on the surface of the grain, two types of isotope exchange reactions, and water formation reaction by the addition of hydrogen to the purge gas.Diffusivities of tritium in the crystal grain of Li_4SiO_4 were estimated ...

Status of he-cooled divertor development (PPCS subtask TW4-TRP-001-D2)

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Within the framework of the EU power plant conceptual study (PPCS), helium-cooled modular divertor concepts have been investigated in detail at the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe during the past few years. The first conceptual design proposed was based on convective cooling with the use of flow promoters in the form of pin and/or slot arrays (HEMP/HEMS) to increase the cooling surface and, hence, enhance the heat transfer capacity. While continuing the design optimisation, an advanced multiple-jet design (HEMJ) was introduced, which is based on direct jet-to-wall impinging cooling and offers advantages in terms of simple construction and manufacturing. Main emphasis of the 2004 work program (TW4-TRP-001) lay on experiments for the concepts HEMJ and HEMS, which were mainly performed at the Efremov Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia. For experiment preparation, detailed test programs were worked out and accompanying CFD analyses were accomplished. The outcomes of ...

Advanced solution algorithms for transient multidimensional thermohydraulic flow problems in complex geometries with the programme COMMIX-2/KfK

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The computer programme COMMIX-2 describes steady state and transient multidimensional single- and two-phase fluid flows with heat transfer in nuclear reactor components and multicomponent systems. Originally from the Argonne National Laboratory, the code has been further developed at the Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe. The original Point-SOR iterative method for the solution of a Poisson-like equation describing the pressure distribution in the fluid as well as the transport of enthalpy and turbulent quantities has been complemented with iterative and direct line- and block-methods. None of the newly implemented methods is original in itself but their implementation into the computer code, which can describe the most general shapes of definition domains, gave a code speed-up by a factor of 2-5, depending on the problem treated. The code capabilities are assessd by the calculation of a benchmark problem involving the numerical simulation of thermal buoyancy ...

Studies on thermodynamic properties of III-V compounds by first-principles response-function calculation

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The temperature dependences of the Grueneisen parameter, heat capacity, bulk modulus and linear thermal expansion coefficient of sixteen III-V zincblende compounds are studied by first-principles response-function calculations. The fundamental relationships among these physical parameters are explored. Negative thermal expansions at lower temperature are found in most of these III-V phases except for the nitrides and boron compounds. By analyzing the cell-volume dependences of the phonon spectrum, it is found that the phases with a negative thermal expansion show a significant acoustic phonon weakening at the X-point in their phonon dispersion, while slight weakening is only seen around the L-point for those boron phases. There is no sign of phonon weakening in the nitrides. (copyright 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH and Co. KGaA, Weinheim) (orig.)

Red laser diodes emitting at 636 nm and 645 nm are studied as a function of pressure up to 20 kbar and temperature from 300 K down to 80 K. The 636 nm samples reveal anomalous L-I-V dependence at low temperatures and at high pressures. The 645 nm samples do not show these anomalies and can be tuned by pressure and temperature down to 575 nm, i.e., in the 70 nm range with powers above 200 mW and low threshold currents. On the parameterization of the roughness length for the air-sea interface in free convection for the coastal site Tarapur, India

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The roughness length at air-sea interface during free convection (Z0fc) is mainly related to the convective velocity (w) rather than the friction velocity (u). The parameterization of Z0fc with (w)2/g as proposed by Abdella and D'Alessio (2003) is evaluated. It is shown that the field measurements at MM Lab, Tarapur Maharashtra Site (TMS) coastal site using Metek GmbH, Ultra sonic anemometers are consistent with the proposed formula. In order to avoid self-correlation by using u, a new parameterization of w with ?u and ?v and gustiness parameter as given by Fairall et al. (1996) is used. The mean values of w and Z0fc estimated using new parameterization were observed to be 0.97 m/s and 2.3E-4 m respectively for the year 2009 at TMS. (author)

Integral air-conditioning system for electric cars. Integrales Klimasystem fuer Elektroautomobile

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Increasing environmental awareness and new legislation in Europe and, in particular, America have accelerated the development of marketable electric cars which satisfy customer demands in terms of performance, range capability, safety and comfort. Tomorrow's electric cars will therefore require powerful heating and cooling systems for the passenger compartment which meet the conditions specific to this particular mode of transport and which do not overly affect the range capability of such vehicles. At Behr GmbH suitable system concepts were developed at a very early stage which were based on a high proportion of recirculated air, the use of the A/C unit as a heat pump, and heat recovery. This paper will examine two typical A/C systems which combine good heating and cooling characteristics with the low electric power requirement of only 1,5-2 kW. (orig.).

Influence of the strain-relaxation induced defect creation on the leakage current of embedded Si{sub 1-x}Ge{sub x} source/drain junctions

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the role of the strain-relaxation processes on the leakage current of embedded SiGe S/D junctions. Current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics were measured to further investigate the relaxation degree of embedded SiGe S/D junctions in the regime where partial relaxation by misfits dislocations is assumed, yielding a reduction of the leakage current density. Further, the impact of the ion implantation-related defects on the electrical performance is discussed. The analysis is complemented with structural characterization based on High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) and Nomarski microscopy. (copyright 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH and Co. Focused ion beam fabrication and properties of nanoscale Josephson junctions for sensors and other applications

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The methods of superconducting device fabrication by lithography and multilevel processing usually require a number of processing steps with lithographic resolution and alignment adequate for the scale of the device be fabricated. As an alternative, the focused ion beam (FIB) microscope is increasingly being used directly to fabricate devices. A major advantage of using a FIB compared to other lithography methods is its flexibility and high resolution. It allows in-situ, milling (#propor to#5 nm at a beam current of 1 pA) to a variety of depths, and imaging (2 nm) of the sample. In this paper we describe our development of junction fabrication techniques using the FIB and their application in creating a range of potential sensor devices and quantum electronics applications. Modern oscillation- and analysis systems are often mentioned in the context of oscillation diagnosis which implies that this is a method of establishing the causes of the mechanical changes that cause the unwanted oscillation. Experience shows, however, that oscillation monitoring instruments can merely indicate oscillation symptoms at an early point in time. These findings must be interpreted in a machine-specific way and seen in the context of previous developments in order to establish the mechanical root cause of the matter. A 1000 MVA-generator shows that conventional oscillation measuring systems may also serve for diagnostic purposes within certain limits.(orig.) Biomass energy utilization - potentials, techniques and cost. Energetische Nutzung von Biomasse - Potentiale, Technik, Kosten

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Renewable energy sources have been attracting the attention of a sensitized public since general pollution abatement measures have been taken, since efforts have been going into the protection of the earth atmosphere, the preservation of the vital ozone layer, and the conservation of fossil energy sources, and since nuclear power risks have been recognized and discussed. In addition to wind power and solar energy solid biomass, e.g. wood, wood wastes, vegetable residues and plants cultivated for the purpose of energy production, is among the topical alternatives. Agriculture and silviculture are important end-users of potential decentralized energy supplies and are cut out for supplying biomass for energy utilization. Additional income sources will open up for farmers. Based on these facts this KTBL working paper describes the biomass energy potential and feasible harvesting and solid-fuel processing and combustion techniques. Energy cost prices are compared and discussed. (orig.)

Model to simulate the interaction between boron carbide and steam or air at high temperature

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The oxidation of boron carbide in steam or air was recently extensively studied especially in Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, Institut fuer Materialforschung. An important data set is available for the interaction modelling. An oxygen diffusion model through the superficial liquid boron oxide formed on the boron carbide external surface associated to a superficial reaction between the liquid boron oxide and steam is proposed to simulate the experimental kinetics from BOX rig and thermogravimetric tests on the interaction between steam and boron carbide at a temperature range 800 C to 1400 C. The oxygen diffusion model will be also useful to simulate interaction between boron carbide and Ar+O2 (air simulation) atmosphere when the steam pressure becomes zero. From the analysis of BOX rig experimental kinetics of non-condensable (H2, CO2, CO and CH4) gases we propose an oxygen diffusion model through the liquid boron oxide and a ''steam/liquid boron ...

Temperature dependence of a twofold magnetic behaviour of a nanoscopic metal/silicon hybrid system - a comparison between Ni/Si and Co/Si

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The investigated hybrid nanocomposite consists of a porous silicon template with electrochemically embedded Ni or Co nanostructures and offers magnetic characteristics which can be tailored by the electrochemical process parameters during fabrication. A twofold magnetic behaviour can be observed, a first one due to the spinmagnetism at magnetic fields below the saturation magnetization of the deposited metals and a second non-saturating term at higher fields (>1 T up to 7 T) above the saturation magnetization. In case of Ni deposited within the pores this non-saturating term shows a paramagnetic characteristic and follows exactly the Curie-Weiss law, whereas for Co/porous silicon samples the temperature dependent magnetization shows some deviations from the Curie Weiss law. In this high field region a difference in the temperature dependence between Ni and Co is observed whereas the non-saturating term does not depend on the geometry of the embedded nanostructures in contrast to ...

Simulation of p-type diffusion in compound semiconductor: the case of beryllium implanted in InGaAs

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

A system of equations describing transient enhanced diffusion of beryllium in InGaAs due to kick-out mechanism or due to formation, migration, and dissociation of the pairs ''beryllium atom-group III self-interstitial'' is proposed and analyzed. Simulation of coupled diffusion of beryllium atoms and self-interstitials in InGaAs during rapid thermal annealing was done for the case of dual implantation. For the experiment under consideration the first ion implantation of phosphorus atoms produced the region of extended defects that led to ''uphill'' diffusion of implanted Be in the defect region and in the vicinity of the surface. The suggested reason of ''uphill'' diffusion could be related to the nonuniform distribution of group III self-interstitials that was formed due to the absorption of point defects on the extended defects and on the surface of a semiconductor. 'Full text:' In Germany, Alloy 800 (high nickel austenitic stainless steel) was modified and qualified for the use as steam generator tubing by Siemens/KWU (now AREVA NP GmbH). The service reliability of Alloy 800 has been demonstrated over a long period of time. 1968 Siemens/KWU decided to use this material for the NPP Stade, which started operation in 1972. The steam generators operating with Alloy 800 tubes have now been in service for more than 30 years. Up to now no PWSCC or secondary-side SCC has been observed in the more than 285,000 tubes installed in Siemens/KWU steam generators (including RSG) in 19 PWRs in Europe. The operating experience will be shown and discussed. During the past regular SG tubing inspections using eddy current testing, a few indications were detected within the tube sheet between upper and lower tube expansion. These indications were limited to the outer tube positions. The number of affected positions is small. Two tubes had been ...

Omni-directional gap of 1-D photonic crystals based on porous silicon with a Gaussian profile refractive index

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Using the transfer matrix method we calculate the omni-directional band gap of a 1-D photonic crystal consisting of alternating layers of two dielectric materials A and B with refractive index n{sub A} and n{sub B}, respectively. The refractive index of layer A is constant and the refractive index of layer B varies according to the envelope of a Gaussian function. We find that under certain circumstances it is possible to obtain 100% reflectivity for both polarizations and any value of the incident angle of the electromagnetic waves. Although the structure considered does not posses a higher omni-directional band gap than the periodic sequence of low and high constant refractive indexes, it can be used to produce a new type of omni-directional mirrors without abrupt interfaces. Novel InN growth method under In-rich condition on GaN/Al2O3(0001) templates

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

A novel technique is proposed for the growth of an InN film on a GaN/Al2O3(0001) template by radio-frequency plasma-excited molecular beam epitaxy (RF-MBE). The method involves 1) InN growth under an In-rich condition and 2) additional nitrogen radical irradiation after the InN growth under an In-rich condition. Excess In that appeared on the InN surface in the InN growth under an In-rich condition is transformed to InN by the additional nitrogen radical irradiation. The effective V/III ratio is easily controlled by monitoring the intensity in a reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) pattern. The growth of the InN film by repeating the InN growth under an In-rich condition and the additional nitrogen radical irradiation is also demonstrated. (copyright 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH and Co. InP-quantum dots in Al_0_._2_0Ga_0_._8_0InP with different barrier configurations

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Systematic ensemble photoluminescence studies have been performed on type-I InP-quantum dots in Al_0_._2_0Ga_0_._8_0InP barriers, emitting at approximately 1.85 eV at 5 K. The influence of different barrier configurations as well as the incorporation of additional tunnel barriers on the optical properties has been investigated. The confinement energy between the dot barrier and the surrounding barrier layers, which is the sum of the band discontinuities for the valence and the conduction bands, was chosen to be approximately 190 meV by using Al_0_._5_0Ga_0_._5_0InP. In combination with 2 nm thick AlInP tunnel barriers, the internal quantum efficiency of these barrier configurations can be increased by up to a factor of 20 at elevated temperatures with respect to quantum dots without such layers. In situ ellipsometric studies of formation kinetics of rare earth metal conversion coatings on magnesium alloy

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

In situ spectroscopic ellipsometry was employed to investigate the initial regime of rare earth metal (REM) conversion coatings formation on AZ31 magnesium alloy. Three REM salts solutions, 0.05 mol.dm"-"3 Ce(NO_3)_3, La(NO)_3 and Sm(NO)_3 solutions, were used for REM conversion coatings preparation. By deconvoluting the ellipsometric data, the surface of the fresh well-polished AZ31 magnesium alloy was found to be covered with 15.80 nm thick native (hydr)oxide film; the refractive indices and the thickness of Ce, La and Sm conversion coatings were obtained. The formation kinetics of three REM coatings follows different exponential functions and the coatings exhibit different optical properties. La conversion coating has the largest n values and the lowest k values while Sm conversion coating is just opposite. Moreover, the pH variation of the bulk conversion solutions upon the coatings formation was recorded. It is confirmed that the reduction of protons leads to the interfacial pH ...

High-pressure Raman study on CeO{sub 2} nanospheres self-assembled by 5 nm CeO{sub 2} nanoparticles

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

CeO{sub 2} undergoes a first-order phase transition from fluorite to {alpha}-PbCl{sub 2}-type structure under high pressure. To evaluate the changes in physical properties of CeO{sub 2} nanomaterials as the particle size decreasing, high-pressure Raman study under quasi-hydrostatic condition has been performed on CeO{sub 2} nanospheres self-assembled by 5 nm CeO{sub 2} nanoparticles at room temperature. Surprisingly, as the pressure elevate to 34 GPa, the CeO{sub 2} nanospheres still retain the cubic fluorite-type structure, indicating the sample is more stable than the bulk counterpart. Whereas, previous high-pressure studies show the phase transition at 22.3/26.5 GPa for 12 nm CeO{sub 2} nanoparticles, which is less stable than the bulk materials. The enhancement of phase stability might be attributed to the increase of surface energy of CeO{sub 2} nanospheres as the size of the building units decrease. High resolution Fourier transform spectroscopy and crystal-field analysis in Tm,Ho:BaY{sub 2}F{sub 8}

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

A Tm{sup 3+}- Ho{sup 3+} -codoped single crystal of monoclinic BaY{sub 2}F{sub 8} has been characterized by means of high resolution FTIR spectroscopy in the wave number range 2000-24000 cm{sup -1} and in the temperature range 9-300 K. The energy level schemes of the two lanthanide ions as determined by the optical absorption spectra is presented, analyzed, and fitted within a single ion Hamiltonian model. The very small energy separation (about 0.6-1.6 cm{sup -1}) measured between the first and second sublevels of the ground state manifolds for both the ions is in line with the theoretical predictions. The impurity-phonon coupling is put into evidence by the thermally induced line shift and broadening, and by the detection of vibronic replicas of a few lines. Fully relativistic analysis of the absorption spectra of Ca_3Sc_2Ge_3O_1_2:Ni"2"+

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Systematic analysis of the energy level schemes, ground state absorption (GSA) and covalency effects for the Ni"2"+ ion in Ca_3Sc_2Ge_3O_1_2 was performed. The recently developed first-principles approach to the analysis of the absorption spectra of impurity ions in crystals based on the discrete variational multi-electron method (DV-ME) [K. Ogasawara et al., Phys. Rev. B 64, 115413 (2001)] was used in the calculations. As a result, complete energy level schemes of Ni"2"+ and its absorption spectra at both possible crystallographic positions (distorted octahedral Sc"3"+ and tetrahedral Ge"4"+ positions) were calculated, assigned and compared with experimental data. Energies of the charge transfer (CT) transitions for both positions are estimated. Numerical contributions of all possible electron configurations into the calculated energy states were determined. By performing analysis of the molecular orbitals (MO) population, it was shown that the covalency of the chemical bonds between ...

Equivalent magnetic noise in magnetoelectric Metglas/Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 laminate composites

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

Abstract We have experimentally and theoretically investigated the equivalent magnetic noise in a magnetoelectric Metglas/ 0.7Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.3PbTiO3 laminate sensor unit by considering the constituent noise sources of dielectric loss (NDE) and DC leakage resistance (NR). In the low frequency range (f = 1 Hz), theory predicts that NR dominates the noise charge (1.6 times larger than NDE), with a 1 Hz noise of 9.1\\;{\\rm pt}/\\sqrt {\\rm Hz}. The experimental equivalent magnetic noise was 10.8\\;{\\rm pt}/\\sqrt {\\rm Hz}. This observed value is slightly higher than the predicted one, which might be due to an oversimplification of the theoretical model in terms of electrical charge amplifier and external vibration noise sources. Effects of CdCl2 treatment on properties of CdTe thin films grown by evaporation at low substrate temperatures

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The structural, morphological and optical properties of vacuum-evaporated CdTe thin films were investigated as a function of substrate temperature and post-deposition annealing without and with CdCl2/treatment at 400 C for 30 min. Diffraction patterns are almost the same exhibiting higher preferential orientation corresponding to (111) plane of the cubic phase. The intensity of the (111) peak increased with the CdCl2/annealing treatment. The microstructure observed for all films following the CdCl2/annealing treatment are granular, regardless of the as-deposited microstructure. The grain sizes are increased after the CdCl2/annealing treatment but now contain voids around the grain boundaries. The optical band gaps, Eg, were found to be 1.50, 1.50 and 1.48 eV for films deposited at 200 K and annealed without and with CdCl2/treatment at 400 C for 30 min respectively. A progressive sharpening of the absorption edge upon heat treatment particularly for the CdCl2/treated was observed. ...

EDP in shaft construction. [Electronic data processing

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Lining shafts and placing them in a given strata needs extensive computation. Therefore, it is natural that the use of electronic computing and of numerical methods in this mining area started early. For shafts being sunk in non-stable water-bearing strata the deformations and stresses of the freezing wall are analysed. The complex system of an outer lining in the shaft sinking stage is designed with regard to the elastic support of the strata. In cases of strata-embedded systems the tubbing liner can be shaped as the loads require. Here analysis of safety against buckling is very important. If a sliding shaft is built as a composite construction, there are advantages in determining the distribution of the material by numerical methods. The analysis of stability is possible only by numerical methods and could not be solved otherwise. The Finite Element Method proves itself as a very general tool to solve the problem of multi-axial states of stress in a foundation section. The use of ...

Diffusion mechanism of implanted Be in GaAs

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The transient enhanced diffusion of low and high dose implanted beryllium in undoped gallium arsenide during post-implant rapid thermal annealing in the temperature range of 700-900 C for 60-240 s has been studied and successfully simulated by the kick-out diffusion model, involving singly positively charged Be interstitials and doubly positively charged Ga self-interstitials. Using the ''plus one'' approach for Ga interstitial generation after implantation with the local Ga interstitial sink concept as well as the appropriate initial and boundary conditions for involved mobile species, and taking into account Fermi-level and built-in electric field effects, the obtained partial differential equations have been solved numerically by means of an explicit finite difference method. The thermal equilibrium concentrations and the diffusivities of Be and Ga interstitials, all as a function of temperature, have been deduced from the fits of the experimental ...

Tritium release from lithium orthosilicate pebbles deposited with palladium

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Full text of publication follows: Slightly over-stoichiometric lithium orthosilicate pebbles have been selected as one optional breeder material for the European Helium Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) blanket. This material has been developed in collaboration of Research Center Karlsruhe and the Schott Glass, Mainz. The lithium orthosilicate pebbles are fabricated from lithium hydroxide and silica by a melting and spraying method in a semi-industrial scale facility. Lithium hydroxide was selected as the precursor since enriched lithium hydroxide is commercially available. The lithium orthosilicate pebbles produced by the process contains oxide phases besides orthosilicate, but it was also found that the oxide phases can be decomposed by annealing at high temperatures. The lithium orthosilicate pebbles produced in this way possesses satisfactory pebble characteristics. Therefore, the authors performed out-of-pile annealing tests using the lithium orthosilicate pebbles ...

Stellar (n,#gamma#) cross sections of p-process isotopes. II. "1"6"8Yb, "1"8"0W, "1"8"4Os, "1"9"0Pt, and "1"9"6Hg

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The neutron-capture cross sections of "1"6"8Yb, "1"8"0W, "1"8"4Os, "1"9"0Pt, and "1"9"6Hg have been measured by means of the activation technique. The samples were irradiated in a quasistellar neutron spectrum of kT=25 keV, which was produced at the Karlsruhe 3.7-MV Van de Graaff accelerator via the "7Li(p,n)"7Be reaction. Systematic uncertainties were investigated in repeated activations with different samples and by variation of the experimental parameters, that is, irradiation times, neutron fluxes, and #gamma#-ray counting conditions. The measured data were converted into Maxwellian-averaged cross sections at kT=30 keV, yielding 1214#+-#61, 624#+-#54, 590#+-#43, 511#+-#46, and 201#+-#11 mb for "1"6"8Yb, "1"8"0W, "1"8"4Os, "1"9"0Pt, and "1"9"6Hg, respectively. The present results either represent first experimental data ("1"6"8Yb, "1"8"4Os, and "1"9"6Hg) or could be determined with significantly reduced uncertainties ("1"8"0W and "1"9"0Pt). Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

This feasibility study of the uve Institut fuer Technische Chemie und Umweltschutz GmbH discusses the scientific and technical fundamentals of a catalytic process for complete removal of organic pollutants (PAH, H-HC, PCB, phenols, nitro-aromatics and organometallic compounds, e.g. from polluted soil and groundwater) by thermal-catalytic cracking and conversion into simple gases. The process is based on the catalytic reaction of the hydrocarbon compounds with water vapour in the temperature range of 700-900 degrees centigrade. The resulting gas mixtures consist mainly of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and methane which can be used as fuels, e.g. for heating or in gas engines. The process is an alterntive to combustion. It is therefore well suited whenever the pollutant to be removed is already mixed with water or water vapour and wherever in-situ removal would be too great a hazard. Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The AVR experimental nuclear reactor was Professor Dr. Rudolf Schulten's brainchild. Visionary ideas led to the success of this technology: - Helium coolant because of the particularly high heat transfer coefficients; - an integrated primary system reactor concept as the basis of all safety considerations in the interest of maximum safety; - uranium-235 and thorium-232 fuel allowing new fuel to be bred; - high temperatures for electricity generation at maximum thermodynamic efficiencies, i.e. optimum fuel utilization; - the possibility to run chemical processes economically at high temperatures by means of nuclear fuels; - the inherent safety of the reactor, for a major accident accompanied by a complete loss of cooling cannot occur for nuclear physics reasons, as was tested twice in the AVR. The AVR attained its first criticality on August 28, 1968. It was operated for more than 20 years, until December 31, 1988, at approximately 67% time utilization, which is an excellent ...

While quality clarification of neurological changes in the area of the posterior cranial fossa and in the course of the vagus nerve as a cause of glottis malfunction is possible with MRI, localized disease of the larynx can more effectively be assessed with low-artifact CT. In the particularly difficult assessment of the post-operative larynx, a recurrence can be diagnosed only after a baseline study has been carried out after the end of therapy. With knowledge of the pretherapeutic findings, the findings immediately post-therapy, and the operation technique used, the optimal CT examination, which can be carried out quickly, will be able to provide more information about recurrence. Isothermal refuelling of natural gas vehicles with condensed natural gas CNG; Isotherme Betankung von Erdgasfahrzeugen mit komprimiertem Erdgas CNG

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

CNG vehicles suffer from an uncontrolled temperature rise of the gas inside the tank during the filling process and heat exchange with the environment leads to variable filling levels. A partly filled tank reduces the range of CNG vehicles and works as a impediment to the spreading of environmentaly more friendly CNG vehicles. The increase of the pressure inside the tank combined with a prolongation of the filling time beyond three minutes can reduce the deficit of the filling process. Impacts of defects on the serviceability of shafts and housings of steam turbines; Einfluss von Fehlstellen auf die Gebrauchseigenschaften von Wellen und Gehaeusen von Dampfturbinen

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The evaluation of possible manufacture-based defects in turbine shafts and housings for component serviceability relevance is of particular interest not only in post-manufacturing NDT but also in evaluation of NDT results obtained by in-service inspections of components with long service lives. The results discussed in the paper are summarized as follows: Most of the examined natural defects in the forgings and castings behave like cracks under the simulated operating conditions and hence may well be evaluated by fracture mechanical methods for their serviceability relevance determined by crack propagation under fatigue, creep and creep-fatigue stress. The empirical correlation of true defect size and US testing results (echo signal, echodynamics, attenuation) permits improved determination of true defect sizes in the turbine components. Care has to be taken to select the proper testing and evaluation methods in compliance with defect types. (orig./MM) [Deutsch] Die ...

Extension of adrenal tumors into the vena cava: results of magnetic resonance angiography; Kavazapfen bei Nebennierentumoren: Kernspintomographische Befunde

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

In rare cases, large adrenal masses with a suspicion of malignancy exhibit tumor extension into the adrenal vein and inferior vena cava. When planning surgery, the relationship of the extension to the inferior vena cava is of decisive improtance. We describe in two cases on the detection of a tumor thrombus in the inferior vena cava arising from a malignant adrenal mass by means of MR angiography (TOF, coronary 2D GRE images [FLASH], 3 slices acquired during 15 second apnea). The angiograms correlated well with the results of DSA venacavography and with the intraoperative findings. Thus, MRA has been demonstrated to be suitable for the certain proof of a venous tumor thrombus not only in cases of renal cell carcinomas but also in cases of malignant adrenal masses. The method should be applied whenever there is evidence of a venous involvement in the adrenal MR images. (orig.) Biosorption of heavy metals under anaerobic conditions. Final report; Biosorption von Schwermetallen unter anaeroben Bedingungen. Abschlussbericht

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The precipitation of heavy metals as hydroxides is the standard technique for the decontamination of waste water streams polluted by these elements. On the other side, progress in research has been made concerning the biosorption onto dead biomass and bioprecipitation supported by physiologically active bacteria. As the aim of this study, a flexible strategy has been envisaged cleaning a waste water with definite heavy metal load underlying the process mentioned above. Suitable bacteria were enriched and the process was tested in a technical plant. As result, a very high efficiency of heavy metal elimination has been found. The field of application covered by the acquired process is identical with the whole range of the waste water streams polluted by heavy metals. In addition, a second stage may be necessary if there are any further contaminants to be removed. (orig.) Development of process technology for large-area thin-film solar modules based on compound semiconductors. Final report; Entwicklung der technologischen Grundlagen fuer grosse Photovoltaikmodule auf Basis von Duennschicht-Verbindungshalbleitern. Abschlussbericht

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

A cooperative effort of the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research (ZSW) and Phototronics Solartechnik GmbH (PST) aimed at the transfer of highly efficient solar cells developed on a laboratory scale, to large-area thin-film solar modules suitable for production. This work was based on research and development at the Institute for Physical Electronics (IPE) of Stuttgart University and ZSW on one hand, and on the know-how of PST in regard to large-area module fabrication on the other hand. The various thin-film layers of the cells and modules comprize molybdenum as rear contact, copper-indium(gallium)-diselenide (CIGS) as absorber material, the combination of cadmium sulphide (CdS) and ZnO as window layer. To produce these layers on large areas (30x30 cm{sup 2}), equipment was constructed and procedures were developed. Monolithic series connection of cells, used in other thin-film technologies, was studied and optimized by suitable patterning procedures, such ...

Transparent thermal insulation for a fabrication hall of LHB, Salzgitter; Transparent gedaemmte Fertigungshalle bei LHB in Salzgitter

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Many industrial workshops in Germany were erected during the 40s and 50s, especially at the beginning of the economic boom. After more than 40 years, these facilities are in need of structural and production-technical modernization. A case in point is the carriage fabrication workshop of the Salzgitter-based company Linke-Hoffmann-Busch. The characteristic features of this type of building are large glazed areas, free uncontrolled ventilation and substantial height. Opportunities for energy-oriented and light-technical modernization are demonstrated at this Salzgitter workshop in exemplary form, the emphasis being on the use of solar energy components and, particularly, transparent thermal insulation. The possibility for formation of macro-cell corrosion in a liquid with low electrical conductivity

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

The possibility of electrochemical corrosion of carbon steel at the rate of 3.25 x 10"-"5 A/cm"2 in water was examined under the conditions present during an accidental pipe rupture at the Mihama nuclear power plant: liquid conductivity, 7.5 #mu#S/cm; dissolved oxygen concentration, 5 ppb or less; pH 8.6#propor to#9.3; ferrous ion concentration, 20 ppb or less; temperature, 142 C. The corrosion rate of iron in a micro-cell with a dissolved oxygen reduction cathode was estimated to be only 1/400 of the preceding rate. On the other hand, that in a micro-cell with a hydrogen ion reduction cathode was estimated to be as high as 1/10 of the preceding rate, that is, 3.25 x 10"-"6 A/cm"2. Two important factors may have influenced the corrosion rate: the remarkable wall thinning, which must have been the direct cause of the rupture of the pipe, was located close to, and downstream from, an orifice; and, the water temperature was in the range at which carbon steel makes a transition from the ...

High-pressure gas quenching in cold chambers for increased cooling capacity

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Gas quenching for the hardening of steel parts is a lower-pollution alternative to quenching in quenchants such as oil or salt. As the surfaces of the cooled parts remain clean after gas quenching, there is no need to wash them after heat treatment, which reduces the consumption of oils and detergents. The fire risk and ventilation requirements of oil quenching are eliminated. In addition, some trials have shown that gas quenching has a positive effect on distortion, representing a saving in finishing work and thus a reduction in costs. Today, gas quenching is used almost solely in vacuum furnaces. Quenching is normally performed in the same chamber as heating, which means that besides quenching the batch, the quenching system must also remove heat from the heating elements and insulation of the furnace. Previous trials performed by IVF have shown that gas quenching with helium of ball bearing and carburizing steels (and other steels) in sizes up to 25 mm at pressures up to 20 bar in a ...

Systematic analysis of the energy level schemes, ground state absorption (GSA) and covalency effects for the Ni{sup 2+} ion in Ca{sub 3}Sc{sub 2}Ge{sub 3}O{sub 12} was performed. The recently developed first-principles approach to the analysis of the absorption spectra of impurity ions in crystals based on the discrete variational multi-electron method (DV-ME) [K. Ogasawara et al., Phys. Rev. B 64, 115413 (2001)] was used in the calculations. As a result, complete energy level schemes of Ni{sup 2+} and its absorption spectra at both possible crystallographic positions (distorted octahedral Sc{sup 3+} and tetrahedral Ge{sup 4+} positions) were calculated, assigned and compared with experimental data. Energies of the charge transfer (CT) transitions for both positions are estimated. Numerical contributions of all possible electron configurations into the calculated energy states were determined. Enhanced activity and interfacial durability study of ultra low Pt based electrocatalysts prepared by ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) method

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Ultra low loading noble metal (0.04-0.12 mg_P_t/cm"2) based electrodes were obtained by direct metallization of non-catalyzed gas diffusion layers via dual ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) method. Fuel cell performance results reported earlier indicate significant improvements in terms of mass specific power density of 0.297 g_P_t/kW with 250 A thick IBAD deposit (0.04 mg_P_t/cm"2 for a total MEA loading of 0.08 mg_P_t/cm"2) at 0.65 V in contrast to the state of the art power density of 1.18 g_P_t/kW using 1 mg_P_t_(_M_E_A_)/cm"2 at 0.65 V. In this article we report the peroxide radical initiated attack of the membrane electrode assembly utilizing IBAD electrodes in comparison to commercially available E-TEK (now BASF Fuel Cell GmbH) electrodes and find the pathway of membrane degradation as well. Energy gap and bond lengths of Al_xGa_yIn_1_-_x_-_yN, Al_xGa_yIn_1_-_x_-_yP and Al_xGa_yIn_1_-_x_-_yAs quaternary alloys

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

We use the Generalized Quasi-Chemical Approach (GQCA) combined with ab initio ultrasoft pseudopotential calculations within density functional theory in order to obtain the structural and electronic properties of Al_xGa_yIn_1_-_x_-_yX (X=As, P or N) quaternary alloys in the zincblende structure. Results for the bond lengths show that their variations with composition are approximately linear and that they do not deviate much from the values of the corresponding binary compounds. For the variation of the band gaps, we obtain a bowing parameter b=0.26 eV for the (Ga_0_._4_7In_0_._5_3As)_z(Al_0_._4_8In_0_._5_2As)_1_-_z quaternary alloy lattice matched to InP, in very good agreement with experimental data. In the case of AlGaInN, a bowing parameter of 0.22 eV is obtained for zincblende AlGaInN lattice matched to GaN. (copyright 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH and Co. KGaA, Weinheim) (orig.)

Effect of chemical composition of SiO{sub x} films on rapid formation of Si nanocrystals induced by thermal plasma jet irradiation

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Si nanocrystal floating gate MOS capacitors were formed on p-Si (100) wafers by thermal plasma jet (TPJ) annealing of SiO{sub 2}/SiO{sub x} /SiO{sub 2}/Si(100) stacked structure. The chemical composition of SiO{sub x} layer was controlled by changing the SiH{sub 4}, He, and O{sub 2} gas flow ratio during plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition. The MOS capacitors showed clear hysteresis in capacitance-voltage (CV) characteristics after TPJ annealing. The hysteresis width shows maximum value when initial composition x =1.7, which shows the maximum photoluminescence (PL) intensity. The maximum hysteresis width of 6.8 V was observed with gate voltage swept between 20 and -20 V in x = 1.7 sample. The result means 7.4 x 10{sup 12} cm{sup -2} carriers are injected to or emitted from Si nanocrystals. The duration of 1 V shift in flatband voltage was {proportional_to}0.1 ms with 20 V pulse, and charged carriers were stably maintained for {proportional_to}2 hours. (copyright 2010 WILEY-VCH ...

Effect of Ba on ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of the PLZT (1.2/55/45) system

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

X-ray diffraction studies of sintered ceramics indicate the coexistence of rhombohedral and tetragonal phases in the 5 mol% Ba-doped PLZT composition. Grain growth is inhibited with increasing Ba concentration in the PLZT system as evidenced by scanning electron micrographs. Dielectric constant and dielectric loss as a function of temperature suggest that #epsilon#_r_t and tan #delta# are increased up to compositions containing 4 and 5 mol% Ba, respectively. The dielectric maximum (#epsilon#_T_c) decreased to 4 mol% Ba and gradually increased to 6 mol% Ba, whereas, with increasing Ba concentration in the PLZT system, the Curie temperature (T_C) decreased from the composition with no Ba to that with 6 mol% Ba. Dielectric dispersion study of Mn-doped PLZT (8/65/35)

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Mn-modified Pb0.92La0.08(Zr0.65Ti0.35)O3 (PLZT) was prepared chemically by a coprecipitate method using their respective nitrate salts and isopropoxides. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray analysis clearly show the formation of PLZT single rhombohedral phase for samples calcined beyond 750 C. Uniform grain distribution was observed from scanning electron microscopic (SEM) studies and grain size was found to increase with Mn doping up to x=0.08 and then decreased. Dielectric measurement shows the decrease in peak transition temperature (TC) with Mn doping up to x=0.12 and then increase along with a sharp rise in dielectric maxima. A diffuse dielectric dispersion is observed in all the compositions. A detailed dispersion study was carried out using the Vogel-Fulcher empirical relation, a universal relaxation law and the Havriliak-Negami function. The Vogel-Fulcher relation fitting parameters of activation energy and freezing temperature were found to decrease with Mn doping up ...

Adsorption and dissociation of water on the (0001) surface of double hexagonal close packed americium

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Ab initio total energy calculations within the framework of density functional theory have been performed for water molecule adsorption on the (0001) surface of double hexagonal packed americium using a full-potential all-electron linearized augmented plane wave plus local orbitals method (FP-L/APW+lo). Subsequent partial dissociation (OH+H) and complete dissociation (H+O+H) of the water molecule have been examined. The completely dissociated H+O+H configuration exhibit the strongest binding with the surface (3.35 eV), followed by partially dissociated species OH+H (2.23 eV), with all molecular H_2O configurations showing weak physisorption (0.366 eV). For molecular adsorptions, the flat lying orientation of the water molecule if found to be more favorable for majority of the cases. In the case of partial dissociation (OH+H), the vertical orientation of OH molecule with O facing the surface adsorbed at a h3 adsorption site and the H atom adsorbed at another neighboring h3 site is found ...

A combinatorial library of micro-topographies and chemical compositions for tailored surface wettability

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Surface modification of topography and chemistry in order to achieve a specific water contact angle (CA) has been explored by using a novel combinatorial screening platform. The screening arrays consisted of 507 distinct combinations of micro-topographies and chemical compositions. By performing chemical modifications with 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H perfluoroethyltriethoxy-silane (PFS) and n-octadecyltriethoxysilane (ODS) on standard silicon wafers it was possible to include both superhydrophobic and very hydrophilic pad arrays in the same screening platform. Surfaces modified with PFS were more hydrophobic than surfaces modified with ODS, while the unmodified silicon surfaces were hydrophilic. For the PFS modified surfaces the largest CAs were achieved with a small pillar size of X = 1 {mu}m and an intermediate inter-pillar gap size of Y = 4 {mu}m with superhydrophobic CAs over 170 . Surface analysis with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that CF{sub 3} groups were present at the ...

Magnetic resonance imaging. Handbook and atlas; Kernspintomographie. Kompendium und Atlas

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a diagnostic imaging tool relies on the generation of magnetic fields, whereas the computerized tomography (CT) uses X-radiation. The fundamental principle of MRI is the magnetic resonance of paramagnetic atomic nuclei. These nuclei, as e.g. protons (= hydrogen nuclei), are aligned in required orientation by application of a strong magnetic field. Upon simultaneous application of an electromagnetic high-frequency field perpendicular to the axis of the basic magnetic field, and in response to periodical changing of the electromagnetic field at a given frequency, the originally aligned paramagnetic nuclei are forced into a movement similar to that of a ``whipping top``. When the resonance frequency is shut off, the nuclei return to their former, aligned positions, inducing a weak signal in a coil. The series of signals generated by multiple repetition of this process of excitation of nuclei and their return to aligned rest is used as input to a ...

MRI-based N-staging in esophageal cancer; N-Staging des Oesophaguskarzinoms mittels MRT unter Verwendung von artefaktreduzierenden LOTA-Sequenzen

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Purpose: For planning the therapeutic strategies and estimating the prognosis in esophageal cancer, N-staging is very important. To date, MRI still is of minor importance as imaging modality of the mediastinum despite promising developments in the past, like ECG-gating or 'averaging' sequences, e.g. LOTA (Long-term averaging), which facilitate mediastinal and thoracic MR-imaging. In a prospective approach, the value of MRI based N-staging was examined with respect to LOTA-sequences. Material and Methods: Within from weeks prior to esophagectomy, standardized MRI of the esophagus was performed in 15 patients (10 squamous-cell-carcinomas and 5 adenocarcinomas) using a 1.5 T whole body scanner. Imaging quality was classified based on depiction of aortic wall or tracheal wall layers. Criteria for malignant infiltration were a diameter of more than 15 mm or a round appearance of a lymph node together with GD-DTPA enhancement. All data were blinded and separately read by ...

Modern visualization of the liver with MRI - current trends and future perspectives; Moderne Leberbildgebung mit der MRT - aktuelle Trends und Zukunft

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

This contribution provides an overview and imparts basic knowledge on pertinent technical developments in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the liver: 3D sequences, respiratory triggering, parallel imaging, and 3 Tesla (3T). 3D sequences can be used as T1-weighted (T1w) sequences for analyzing dynamics of contrast enhancement or as T2w sequences for MR cholangiography. Consistent improvements in respiratory triggering make it possible to obtain good image quality on T2w scans even in patients unable to hold their breath. Parallel imaging as a universal technique to accelerate image acquisition is particularly appropriate for MRI of the liver, and it has been shown that the reduced acquisition time is not achieved at the expense of image quality. Further progress in MRI of the liver can be expected with use of the 3T systems, but hitherto irrelevant problems must still be solved. Overall the innovations presented here, applied alone or in combination, facilitate rapid, robust, and ...

MRT of the abdomen in combination with enteroclysis in Crohn disease with oral and intravenous Gd-DTPA; MRT des Abdomens in Kombination mit der Enteroklyse bei Morbus Crohn unter Verwendung von oralem und intravenoesem Gd-DTPA

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

60 patients between 17 and 72 years of age were investigated. First, an enteroclysis was performed in typical manner. The applicated methylcellulosis was blended with positive oral MR contrast media (Magnevist oral, Schering). After enteroclysis, MRI of the abdomen was performed using T1- and T2-weighted breathhold sequences (Flash 2D pre- and postcontrast and TSE) in axial and coronal planes. The length of the affected bowel and the stenosis seen with enteroclysis correlated well with the visible thickening of the small bowel wall and the stenosis seen in MRI. Using MRI, additional findings could be obtained in 28 patients, such as fistulas, abscesses or a hydronephrosis, or a better assessment of the stenosis was possible with MRI, because of the avoidance of overshadowing of the affected bowel loop with MRI. A brilliant MR-tomographic imaging of the small bowel is possible under the condition, that the small bowel contrast is optimal. The main prerequisite is a large filling volume ...

'Zoxy' - the zinc-air high energy battery system: with decentral charging infrastructure; ''Zoxy'' - das Zink-Luft-Hochenergiebatterie-System mit dezentraler Lade-Infrastruktur

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Storing electrical energy in batteries is not a viable option for sustaining a country's energy economy. The mass and volume, as well as the costs, of electrochemical components required for this would be beyond all reason. Nevertheless, in certain applications the storage of electrical energy does have significant advantages over other technologies. For example, electrically powered road vehicles emit no exhaust fumes and very little noise at their place of operation. In this way they contribute substantially to air and noise pollution control in urban areas. Photovoltaic applications permit environmentally friendly electricity applications in places remote from the public grid where conventional solutions are prohibitively expensive. More than in the past, battery systems today have to meet a wide range of technical, economic and ecological requirements in order to be marketable. This is why the ''Zoxy'' zinc-air battery system was ...

Development of an innovative spacer grid model utilizing computational fluid dynamics within a subchannel analysis tool

Science.gov (United States)

In the past few decades the need for improved nuclear reactor safety analyses has led to a rapid development of advanced methods for multidimensional thermal-hydraulic analyses. These methods have become progressively more complex in order to account for the many physical phenomena anticipated during steady state and transient Light Water Reactor (LWR) conditions. The advanced thermal-hydraulic subchannel code COBRA-TF (Thurgood, M. J. et al., 1983) is used worldwide for best-estimate evaluations of the nuclear reactor safety margins. In the framework of a joint research project between the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and AREVA NP GmbH, the theoretical models and numerics of COBRA-TF have been improved. Under the name F-COBRA-TF, the code has been subjected to an extensive verification and validation program and has been applied to variety of LWR steady state and transient simulations. Under the repository storage conditions of Eram and Konrad, waste packages designed for permanent storage must not contain or release freely mobile liquids, except for the minimum residues attainable by reasonable efforts or unavoidable. In accordance with a directive issued by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU), waste conditioning must be carried out so as to minimize waste volumes and, if possible, on the site where the waste arises. Liquid waste is conditioned most effectively by drying. At the present time, various different processes for drying liquid waste are employed as reflected by the state of the art: The Robe process; roller drying; the RDA process; Favorit; in-drum drying; and HPA liquid waste drying with make-up feed. The HPA process offers these advantages: Drying under atmospheric conditions, which means high level of dryness (freely mobile and releasable water is removed); the residual water content is 10%; isothermal drying by hot air, which ...

Digital direct magnification mammography with storage phosphor screens. Standardized and image result dependent post-processing parameters; Digitale Vergroesserungsmammographie mit Speicher-Folien-Technik. Standardisierte und befundorientierte Bildverarbeitungsparameter

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Present day mammography has not been able to make use of the advantages of digital luminescence radiography because of the limited spatial resolution. The recent development of electromagnetic focusing X-ray tube with effective focal spot sizes from 0.04 to 0.12 mm allows radiographic direct magnification with less geometric blur. It is now possible to combine direct magnification mammography with digital luminescence radiography. By combining high quality storage phosphor screens with an HQ-workstation a spatial resolution of 8 lp/mm is possible for 1.7-fold magnification. For 4-fold spot magnification views spatial resolution can be theoretically increased to approx. 20 lp/mm. One important advantage of digital radiography is the possibility of image-postprocessing. This article presents two sets of standard parameters and three sets of image dependent parameters for better imaging of specific lesions, such as microcalcifications. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of acquired abnormalities of the inner ear and cerebello-pontine angle; CT und MRT erworbener Veraenderungen des Innenohrs und Kleinhirnbrueckenwinkels

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

CT and MRI of acquired abnormalities of the inner ear and cerebello-pontine angle present themselves with very typical findings. The imaging should be adapted to the pathology looked for and either CT or MRI should be used alone or in combination.CT, especially high resolution CT (HRCT), provides an excellent bone contrast, while MRI has a much superior soft tissue contrast. Acute inflammatory changes of the inner ear are solely depicted by contrast-enhanced MRI. HRCT excellently depicts osseous changes of the inner ear and cerebellopontine angle such as chronic ossifying labyrinthitis occurring after acute labyrinthitis, otosclerotic or traumatic changes. Tumorous changes not yielding to bony changes are best delineated by MRI. Posttraumatic hemorrhage and chronic fibrotic changes within the labyrinth are depicted by MRI, only. DoseWatchers - A computer based X ray dose monitoring project in paediatric radiology

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Full text: Introduction. Children, especially premature infants and neonates, are at a much higher risk to obtain an X ray induced disturbance of life - particularly cancer. On the one hand this is due to their longer life expectancy and on the other hand it is due to their higher cell proliferation rate. The paediatric radiology unit of the Inselspital Bern recently installed some of the most advanced X ray equipment nowadays available. It is based on the two latest digital technologies: double read computed radiography (CR) and direct digital radiography (DR). Only the implementation of these digital radiography systems permits the digital acquisition and additionally the analysis of acquired data. The systematic analysis of large amounts of biometric data and exposition data is the basis for further dose reduction and a systematic quality control (QC). Patients are increasingly critical concerning radiation exposure - especially parents regarding their children. Besides an ...

Funding programme ``30 low energy buildings in Hesse`` - experience and conclusion; Foerderprogramm `30 Niedrigenergiehaeuser in Hessen` - Erfahrungen und Schlussfolgerungen

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Low energy buildings promise significant energy savings and help climate preservation by cutting down on annual heating requirements to values below 70 kWh per m{sup 2} dwelling space. It is expected that low energy constructions will become the common standard by the year 2000 as a result of the forthcoming energy saving ordinance. For making the introduction and implementation of this standard successful, practical experience will be essential. For this reason, the state government of Hesse has supported respective pilot projects 1987. In 1989 the funding programme `30 low energy buildings in Hesse` has been established. Consecutively - between 1989 and 1993 - 29 buildings were erected. At first, the thermal quality of the crafted building construction including the ventilation systems was checked. Consecutively, energy consumption, indoor and outdoor temperatures were measured over a time span of several years. The experience of the inhabitants was surveyed. The `Institut Wohnen und ...
