Total river discharge in Pakistan in summer season vary from 3 thousand to 34 thousand cusses (100 thousand Cusses to 1,200 thousand Cusses) and can cause tremendous loss to human lives, crops and property, this causes the loss of most of the flood water in the lower Indus plains to the sea. Due to limited capacity of storage at Tarbela and Mangla Dams on river Indus and Jhelum, with virtually no control on Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej, devastating problems are faced between July and October in the event of excessive rainfall in the catchments. The activities "1"0"1Mo and "1"0"1Tc produced from neutron capture by natural Mo were chemically separated and studied using Ge(Li) #gamma#-ray detectors. Out of 185 transitions observed in the decay of "1"0"1Mo, 170 were assigned to 44 excited levels in "1"0"1Tc. For the decay of "1"0"1Tc, 26 of 27 transitions were placed among 10 excited levels in "1"0"1Ru. The interpretation of the "1"0"1Tc level scheme using the shell-model approach is not satisfactory even for a five-particle calculation. Systematics of odd-A level structures in the region of A=101 indicate that the level structure of "1"0"1Tc could be due partly to the onset of collective effects.
The synthesis of ["1"1C]phenobarbital, ["1"1C]pentobarbital and["1"1C]amobarbital labelled in the 5-[1-"1"1C]ethyl position is reported. The malonic esters R- CH(CO_2Et)_2 [R phenyl-, 1-methylbutyl-, and 3- methylbutyl- were alkylated with [1-"1"1C]ethyl iodide prepared from ["1"1C]carbon dioxide. Ring closure of the 2-[1-"1"1C]ethyl-labelled malonic esters with urea afforded 5-[1-"1"1C]ethyl-phenobarbital,-phenobarbital, -pentobarbital and -amobarbital synthesis times of 42-47 min, counted from ["1"1C] carbon dioxide. In typical syntheses starting with 3 GBq pentobarbitol and (81 mCi) ["1"1C]carbon dioxide, 150-215 MBq (4-6 mCi) were produced in 25-30% decay corrected -amobarbital radiochemical yields with radiochemical purities greater than 98%. Gamma-rays and conversion electrons emitted in the "1"1"7Cs and "1"1"7Xe decays have been studied from on-line mass-separated "1"1"7Cs sources at the ISOLDE facility. A new "1"1"7Xe decay scheme has been constructed and a level scheme has been established for the "1"1"7Cs decay. The results are discussed in the frame of our recent knowledge about odd-mass neutron-deficient I and Xe systematics.
In this work, the half-lives of the beta-unstable nuclei "1"0"1Mo and "1"0"1Tc were studied using neutron-irradiated samples of "1"0"0Mo to produce "1"0"1Mo which in its turn generates "1"0"1Tc by beta decay. The gamma activity of each sample was followed for 5 consecutive half-lives in steps of 5 minutes. A total of 22 sources were measured and checked for dead-time influence, and the half-lives were obtained by weighted average. The results are statistically incompatible with the tabulated values.

Neutron-rich He-, Li-, and Be-isotopes in the vicinity of the drip-line have been studied by "1"2C- and "1"4C-induced multi-nucleon transfer reactions on "1"0Be and "1"3","1"4C-targets. This study revealed unknown excited states in "8","1"0He, "1"0","1"1Li and in "1"3","1"4Be. Both excitation energies and widths have been measured. Present study concerns in the measurements of #gamma#-ray emission probabilities, P_#gamma#, of "1"0"1Mo and "1"0"1Tc using the balance of scheme method and the entire process recording. The P_#gamma# of "1"0"1Mo by the entire process recording is about 5% lower than that by using the balance of scheme method. The P_#gamma# of "1"0"1Tc using the two methods agree each other very well. So, it seems the #gamma#-ray emission probabilities as well as measurement method still need study further for "1"0"1Mo. As researchers explore new applications for positron emission tomography radiopharmaceuticals, the demand for effective and readily available radiopharmaceuticals continues to increase. The syntheses of two such radiopharmaceuticals, ["1"1C]acetate and ["1"1C]palmitate, can be automated on the GE Tracerlab FX_C_-_P_r_o by utilizing Grignard reactions. Radiochemical purities of the ["1"1C]acetate and the ["1"1C]palmitate products were high (>98% and >99.9%, respectively) with average non-corrected yields of 18% (n=3) and 10% (n=5), respectively. Lifetimes have been measured in the #pi#h_9_/_2 (yrast) and #pi#i_1_3_/_2 (excited) bands in the nuclei "1"8"1Ir and "1"8"7Au using the Recoil Distance Method (RDM). The results clearly indicate that the #pi#i_1_3_/_2 band exhibits an increased deformation over the #pi#h_9_/_2 band, in keeping with the premise that the delayed crossing in this band is due to enhanced quadrupole deformation. A completely microscopic theory for "1"8"7Ir, "1"8"7Os, "1"8"9Ir and "1"8"9Pt is developed in terms of a quasi-particle coupled to the neighbouring even-even core. The calculated values of the positive parity states of "1"8"7Ir are given which agree fairly good with the experimental values. The values of the negative parity states of "1"8"7Ir are also given. The new compounds In_3_._7Mo_1_5S_1_9, In_1_._6Rb_2Mo_1_5S_1_9, In_2_._2CsMo_1_5S_1_9, and ScTl_2Mo_1_5S_1_9 have been synthesized by solid-state reaction in sealed molybdenum crucible at about 1250 deg. C. Their crystal structures were solved and refined from X-ray single-crystal data in the hexagonal space group P63/m. Their Mo-S framework consists of an equal mixture of Mo_6S_8S_6 and Mo_9S_1_1S_6 cluster units interconnected through Mo-S bonds. Heavy ion irradiation on tantalum metal target with 57 MeV "1"1B"4"+ leads to the production of no-carrier-added radioisotopes of platinum, "1"8"7","1"8"8Pt and iridium, "1"8"7","1"8"8Ir in the matrix, which have been effectively separated from the bulk target and from each other with suitable anion exchangers employing liquid-liquid extraction (LLX). Also "1"8"8","1"8"9Pt and "1"8"8","1"8"9Ir radionuclides have been produced, from their short-lived precursors "1"8"8","1"8"9Au, in "1"2C"6"+ irradiated tantalum matrix. A nuclear resonance fluorescence experiment on "8"8Sr has been performed with bremsstrahlung of 6.7 MeV endpoint energy. The #gamma#-ray linear polarisation has been measured with a EUROBALL CLUSTER detector used as a Compton polarimeter. The results indicate positive parity for the J=1 state at 4.742 MeV in "8"8Sr, in contrast to the previous interpretation as a 1"- two-phonon (2"+_1 x 3"-_1) state and in conflict with the predictions of the quasiparticle-phonon model. On the basis of such calculations the 1"+ state at 3.486 MeV may be considered as the 1"+_1 one-phonon state and the very strong 1"+_1#->#0"+_1 deexcitation as proton spin-flip 2p_1_/_2#->#2p_3_/_2 transition. The tissue distribution of "1"3"1I-transferrin ("1"3"1I-Tf) was studied in athymic nude mice having s.c. human colonic adenocarcinoma HT-29 xenografts. Four days after "1"3"1I-Tf injection, the "1"3"1I specific activity measured in the HT-29 tumor, i.e. amount of radioactivity per gram of fresh tissue, represented 0.31 #+-# 0.09% of the injected radioactivity and was 1.90 fold more than that measured in the murine colon (P < 0.05). The "7Be(#alpha#,#gamma#)"1"1C and "7Li(#alpha#,#gamma#)"1"1B reactions are investigated in the three-cluster Generator Coordinate Method. The microscopic wave functions are described from #alpha# and "3He ("3H) clusters, with two coupling modes: #alpha#+"7Be ("7Li) and "3He ("3H)+"8Be. Different internal states of "7Be ("7Li) and "8Be are taken into account. The model is tested on "1"1C and "1"1B spectroscopic properties, which agree fairly well with experiment. We suggest that, in both nuclei, the (3)/(2)"- and (5)/(2)"- states located close to the #alpha#+"7Be ("7Li) threshold, are intruder states. The "7Be(#alpha#,#gamma#)"1"1C and "7Li(#alpha#,#gamma#)"1"1B reaction rates are calculated for temperatures up to 10"9 K. Epidemiologic studies suggest that diets rich in phytoestrogens are associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer. The half-lives of "4"1Ar, "8"0"mBr, "9"4"mNb, "1"0"1Mo, "1"0"1Tc, "1"0"9Pd, "1"0"9"mPd, "1"2"2Sb, "1"2"2"mSb, "1"2"3"mSn, "1"5"2"mEu and "2"3"9Np have been measured more accurately compared to previous measurements. All of these half-lives and 39 others published earlier will be cited by M.S. Antony in the forthcoming project 'Chart of the nuclides - Strasbourg, 1990' due to appear early 1991. The author describes the Gamma -spectrum analysis results of "1"1"0"mAg, the method used, and the coincidence correction theory on which the analysis is based. The samples were placed at the upper end of the detector. The experimental has been performed with a view to studying complete and incomplete fusion in "1"4N + "1"6"3D_y system below 7 MeV/nucleon. The excitation functions for several reactions have been measured using the activation technique and compared with the theoretical predictions based on statistical models. The codes ALICE-91 and CASCADE used earlier for the analysis of excitation functions in case of "1"2C + "1"6"5H_0 system have been used here also with the same set of input parameters. The ground state sequence in "1"0"4Ru can be understood as demonstrating a simple evolution from a quasi-vibrational structure at lower spins to statically deformed, quasi-rotational excitation involving the population of a pair of low-#OMEGA# h_1_1_/_2 neutron orbitals. Laser spectroscopy measurements have been performed on neutron deficient iridium isotopes. The hyperfine structure and isotope shift of the optical Ir I transition 5d"76s"2"4F_9_/_2 "#-># 5d"76s6p "6F_1_1_/_2 at 351.5 nm have been studied for the "1"8"2"-"1"8"9Ir, "1"8"6Ir"1m and "1"9"1","1"9"3Ir isotopes. The nuclear magnetic and quadrupole moments were obtained from the HFS measurements and the changes of the mean square charge radii from the IS measurements. A large mean square charge radius change between "1"8"7Ir and "1"8"6Ir and between "1"8"6Ir"1m and "1"8"6Ir"1g has been observed.
Calculations have been made to determine the production of "1"8"8W from "1"8"6W in several US fission reactor systems, e.g., Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF), the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), and the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR). Important input to these calculations are the cross-section parameters for "1"8"6W, "1"8"7W, and "1"8"8W. Only two values have been measured for "1"8"7W and none for "1"8"8W. We had conducted an experiment to investigate the feasibility of using dewatered sewage sludge and coconut coir as a peat substitute in a potting medium for chrysanthemum. The energy level schemes of "1"9"2Os and "1"9"2Pt have been established on the basis of #gamma#-#gamma# coincidence studies using a dual parameter data collection system. Ge(Li) detectors were employed to study the gamma spectra produced in the E.C. and #beta#"- decays of "1"9"2Ir to "1"9"2Os and "1"9"2Pt, respectively. Thirteen new transitions and three new levels at 1,146.95, 1,237.35 and 1,913.76 keV are suggested. Relative intensities from singles measurements, branching ratios, #alpha#(K) and log ft values were calculated and multipolarities, spins and parities deduced. The magnetic hyperfine splitting frequencies #nu#="+#mu#B sub(HF)/Ih"+ of the "1"7"5Ta and "1"7"7Ta ground states have been measured to be 320.45(11) and 317.552(55) MHz by using the technique of NMR-ON. The massive star-forming core MM1 of W75N was observed using the Submillimeter Array with #approx#1'' and 2'' spatial resolutions at 217 and 347 GHz, respectively. Stargardt`s disease is inherited as an autosomal recessive condition characterized by a juvenile macular dystrophy. Genetic linkage analysis recently assigned the disease locus to chromosome 1p21-p13 with the best estimate for location of the gene near the locus D1S435. We performed linkage analysis in 34 North American families and 2 inbred families from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with 12 highly polymorphic markers on chromosome 1p flanking D1S435 between D1S207 and D1S223 and report significant linkage for all 12 markers with no evidence for genetic heterogeneity. To understand the environmental dispersion trend of "3H and "1"4C discharged from the Wolsung nuclear power plant, the present levels of "3H and "1"4C in environmental samples in the vicinity of the Wolsong site were studied. We obtained the ratios of "1"3"4Cs/"1"3"7Cs and "1"5"4Eu/"1"3"7Cs in spent PWR fuels with gamma scanning equipment of irradiated material examination facility. The fuel segments, of which the burn-up is about 40 GWD/MTU and its cooling time is 8.4 years, are prepared in Post Irradiated Examination Facility and transported to IMEF. By considering of multi-peaks of "1"3"4Cs and "1"5"4Eu, we obtained the relative efficiency of the gamma scanning system as a function of energy. The measurements of the K X-ray intensity ratio I(K#alpha# _2/K#alpha# _1), I(K#beta# _1/K#alpha# _1) and I(K#beta#/K#alpha#) for elements V, Mn, Zn, Tc, Ru, Cd, Xe, Ba, Cs, Hg and Rn were experimentally determined both by photon excitation, in which 59.5 keV #gamma#-rays from a "2"4"1Am and 123.6 keV #gamma#-rays from a "6"0Co were used, and following the radioactive decay of "5"1Cr, "5"5Fe, "6"7Ga, "9"9Tc, "1"1"1In, "1"3"1I, "1"3"3Ba, "1"3"3Xe, "1"3"7Cs, "2"0"1Tl and "2"2"6Ra. K X-rays emitted by samples were counted by a Si(Li) detector with resolution 160 eV at 5.9 keV. Obtained values were compared with the theoretical values. It was observed that present values agree with the previous theoretical and other experimental results.
75 mg (NH_4)_6Mo_7O_24 #centre dot# 4H_2O solution was irradiated for 20 min in miniature neutron source reactor (MNSR) and cooled for 12 min. In the conditions of 0.8 mol/L HNO_3, phase ratio 1:1, the solution of "1"0"1Tc sample was extracted twice with #alpha#-benzoin oxime/ethyl acetate phase to remove "1"0"1Mo and a radiochemically pure and carrier-free "1"0"1Tc product was obtained. Redd1, a recently discovered stress-response gene, is regulated by hypoxia via hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) and by DNA damage via p53/p63; however, the signaling pathway by which its expression is induced by hypoxia has not been elucidated. Discrepancies between the energy level schemes of "1"0"9Cd determined by radioactive decay studies and "1"1"0Cd(d, t) reaction studies were investigated by a new study of the "1"1"0Cd(d, t) reaction. Sixteen triton groups were found, J/sup pi/ assignments were made, and spectroscopic factors and fullnesses of single particle states were determined and compared with those for isotonic nuclei. The results remove or clarify all previous discrepancies.

The particle surface of Li[Ni{sub 1/3}Co{sub 1/3}Mn{sub 1/3}]O{sub 2} was modified by AlF{sub 3} as a new coating material to improve the electrochemical properties in the high cutoff voltage of 4.5 V. The Lie algebras of certain special unitary and special orthogonal groups are studied and their projection operators are determined in order to facilitate the above analyses, in particular that of SO(2,4)/SO(l,3) x SO(1,1). The analysis consists of determining the transformation properties of the Goldstone bosons, constructing the most general possible Lagrangian for the realisations and finding the metric of the coset space.

We have shown that energy contamination introduced by ion beam deceleration technology that is used to increase the beam currents available for low energy boron implants, can affect fabricated junctions adversely. A 4 keV "1"1B beam is extracted and retarded by a potential of -3.5 keV for 0.5 keV "1"1B implantation, or by a potential of -3.8 keV for 0.2 keV "1"1B implantation. Intentional beam contamination was introduced by turning off the retarding potential to allow the 4 keV "1"1B ions to irradiate Si wafers directly. The percentage of contamination, at levels of 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% was introduced. Rapid thermal annealing of all the implanted samples was performed under N_2 ambient at 1050 deg. C for 1 s. Laser spectroscopy measurements have been performed on neutron-deficient iridium isotopes. The hyperfine structure and isotope shift of the optical Ir I transition 5d"76s"2 "4F_9_/_2#->#5d"76s6p "6F_1_1_/_2 have been studied for the "1"8"2"-"1"8"9Ir, "1"8"0Ir"m and "1"9"1","1"9"3Ir isotopes. The nuclear magnetic and quadrupole moments were obtained from the hyperfine splitting measurements and the changes of the mean square charge radii from the isotope shift measurements. A large deformation change between "1"8"7Ir and "1"8"6Ir and between "1"8"6Ir"m and "1"8"6Ir"g has been observed.
A nuclear resonance fluorescence experiment on {sup 88}Sr has been performed with bremsstrahlung of 6.7 MeV endpoint energy. The {gamma}-ray linear polarisation has been measured with a EUROBALL CLUSTER detector used as a Compton polarimeter. The results indicate positive parity for the J=1 state at 4.742 MeV in {sup 88}Sr, in contrast to the previous interpretation as a 1{sup -} two-phonon (2{sup +}{sub 1} x 3{sup -}{sub 1}) state and in conflict with the predictions of the quasiparticle-phonon model. In the current studies, we have investigated the effects of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) on the in vivo disposition of eribulin using CF-1 abcb1a-deficient mice, and the influence of eribulin on P-gp-mediated efflux of digoxin in Caco-2 cells. Decay sequences based on the 1/2"+[660] proton orbital have been identified in "1"7"1Ta and "1"7"7Re based on spin, parity, and large alignment. This decay sequence is observed higher in energy than predicted in cranking calculations based on modified oscillator potentials. Similarly known 1/2"-[541] decay sequences in these and other neighbouring isotopes are observed lower in energy than predicted. The [402]5/2 bands in "1"7"7Ta which are ''identical'' to the neighboring even-even "1"7"6Hf groundstate band have been extended to higher angular momentum. These bands in the two nuclei are seen to diverge from each other in the region of the first i_1_3_/_2 neutron alignment. The lower observed crossing frequency for the [402]5/2 bands indicates a lower deformation for these bands compared to "1"7"6Hf. Extensions to the h_9_/_2 [541]1/2 yrast band are also reported. We present the low-temperature physical properties of the polycrystalline perovskite systems La2/3A1/3Mn1-xCoxO3, A=Ca, Sr (0.5x1) including electrical resistance, magnetization, ac and dc susceptibilities. The experimental data suggest the presence of correlated ferromagnetic clusters embedded in some non-ferromagnetic matrix. The systems show semiconducting behavior and negative magnetoresistance.
Perovskite-type cobaltates in the system La2Co1+z(MgxTi1-x)1-zO6 were studied for z=0?x?0.6 and 0?xoC. The space group symmetry of the structure changes from P21/n via Pbnm to R3-bar c with both increasing Mg content and increasing Co content. The La2Co(MgxTi1-x)O6 (z=0) compounds show anti-ferromagnetic couplings of the magnetic moments for the Co below 15 K for x=0, 0.1 and 0.2. XAFS data of metallic glass Al_0_._9_1La_0_._0_9 and a crystalline phase Al_1_1La_3 formed by annealing of the glass were measured at the La L_3 edge at T=12 K and analyzed using the radial distribution function method. The shortest La-Al distance appeared to be distinctively smaller within the glass than in the crystal. This difference decreases the disparity in size of La and Al in the alloy, allowing their mixing in the glassy state. ((orig.)).

Molar excess volumes, VE and molar excess enthalpies, HE of 1,3-dioxolane (D) (i) + propan-1-ol, 1,3-dioxolane (i) + butan-1-ol and 1,3-dioxolane (i) + butan-2-ol (j) binary mixtures have been measured as a function of composition at 308.15 K. The analysis of VE data by graph, theoretical approach reveals that while propan-1-ol, butan-1-ol exist as associated entities in the pure state; 1,3-dioxolane and butanol exist as monomers in their pure state. These (i+j) binary mixtures are characterized by interactions between ethereal oxygen atom of D(i) and hydrogen atom of alkanols. The IR studies lend additional support to the proposed structure of molecular entitles in these mixtures. The energetics of the mixtures have also been studied.

Eighteen new values of J"#pi# have been obtained for these nuclei. Values of the fullness and emptiness parameters V"2 and U"2 have been suggested for the 3s_1_/_2 and 2d_5_/_s orbitals in "1"0"0Mo. The energy level schemes of "1"5"2Gd and "1"5"2Sm have been established on the basis of single #gamma#-spectra, and #gamma#-#gamma# coincidence measurements. Ge(Li) detectors were used to study the gamma spectra produced in the EC/#beta#"+ and #beta#"- decays of "1"5"2Eu to "1"5"2Sm and "1"5"2Gd, respectively. The proton and neutron densities, root-mean-square (rms) radii of proton density and neutron density, and neutron skin thickness of "4"-"1"0He, "6"-"1"1Li, and "7"-"1"2Be isotopes are calculated using Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method with SLy4, SLy5, SLy6, and SLy7 force parameters. Abstract The heterotetrameric K++-channel KCNQ1/KCNE1 is expressed in heart, skeletal muscle, liver and several epithelia including the renal proximal tubule. In the heart, it contributes to the repolarization of cardiomyocytes. The repolarization is impaired in ischemia. Spindle cell sarcomas consist of tumors with different biological features, of which distant metastasis is the most ominous sign for a poor prognosis. However, metastasis is difficult to predict on the basis of current histopathological analyses. We have identified actin filament-associated protein 1-like 1 (AFAP1L1) as a candidate for a metastasis-predicting marker from the gene expression profiles of 65 spindle cell sarcomas. A multivariate analysis determined that AFAP1L1 was an independent factor for predicting the occurrence of distant metastasis (P=0.0001), which was further confirmed in another set of 41 tumors by a quantitative mRNA expression analysis. The gene encoding the human type I pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide receptor (ADCYAP1R1) was mapped to chromosome 7 by PCR analysis of genomic DNA from a human/rodent somatic cell hybrid mapping panel. This assignment was confirmed and the gene localized to chromosome band 7p14 by fluorescence in situ hybridization. A yeast artificial chromosome containing ADCYAP1R1 was identified in the CEPH {open_quotes}B{close_quotes} Mega-YAC library. In this work, the half-life of the "1"5"5Sm #beta#"- decay was determined using enriched "1"5"4Sm samples submitted to irradiation in the IEA-R1 reactor of IPEN; the activity of the samples were followed for 4-5 consecutive half lives using a 198 cm"3 HPGe detector. The data was corrected using a non paralizable dead time correction and fitted to an exponential decay function using a non linear fitting procedure developed on the MatLab platform. The resulting value--T_1_/_2 = 22.180(26) min--was compatible to the one found in the literature, with a lower uncertainty.

This study investigated whether Erdr1 regulates murine melanoma progression, as well as the mechanism involved in Erdr1-regulated metastasis. Their electrochemical properties in 1 M LiPF6/EC + DEC (1:1 w/w) or 1 M LiPF6/PC + DEC (1:1 w/w) at room and elevated temperatures (30 and 60 deg C) have been studied using galvanostatic cycling. The full length cDNA of the Brn1 was first cloned, and then expression of the Brn1 was analyzed and the function was identified by silencing technology. Results show that the full length cDNA of the C. lunata Brn1 gene contains 1001 base pairs and an 801?bp open reading frame encoding 267 amino acids. Semi-quantitative PCR analysis shows that the expression of Brn1 at 96?h is significantly higher than at 24 and 72?h (p?Brn1-silenced transformants were light brown in culture filtrate, and have significantly reduced toxin production relative to the wild-type. These results imply that Brn1 gene in C. lunata is not only involved in 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene melanin synthesis, but is also relatively associated with toxin biosynthesis of the pathogen.

Eight states are observed and tentatively assigned to the configuration #pi#h_9_/_2#nu#(g_9_/_2)"3 and three to the configuration #pi#h_9_/_2#nu#(g_9_/_2)"2i_1_1_/_2. These two lowest configurations in "2"1"2Bi are compared with the corresponding configurations in "2"1"0Bi and the calculations of Warburton.

A radioassay for the rapid determination of Gsub(M1) ganglioside concentration in small volumes of CSF from individual patients is described. The assay utilizes the high-affinity interaction between cholera enterotoxin ("1"2"5I-labelled) and Gsub(M1) ganglioside. The lower detection limit of Gsub(M1) ganglioside by this radioassay under the described incubation conditions is 2.5 ng/ml. The radioassay-determined lumbar CSF Gsub(M1) ganglioside concentrations in a small group of patients with diverse neurologic disorders are presented. The radioassay Gsub(M1) ganglioside concentration is in good agreement with the G(M1) ganglioside concentration determined, in one patient, by the tlc-densitometry technique. (author).
We consider particle evaporation and fission of an ensemble of hot, rotating compound nuclei as a stochastic process. We derive a set of coupled differential equations formed by a Fokker-Planck equation describing fission, and master equations for calculating particle evaporation. From these equations, we are able to determine multiplicities of prefission neutrons, protons and #alpha#-particles, their energy spectra and their angular momentum distributions. A comparison of our results with experimental data provides us with information regarding the reduced friction coefficient #beta#, the fission barrier height and the level density parameter. Sr3In0.9Co1.1O6, isostructural to Ca3Co2O6, is revealed by the study of the phase relations in the system SrO-InO1.5-CoOx (1000 oC). The structure of Sr3In0.9Co1.1O6 is refined by the combination of powder X-ray and neutron diffraction. Sr3In0.9Co1.1O6 crystallizes in a trigonal lattice with the cell parameters a=b=9.59438(3) A, c=11.02172(4) A with the space group R-3c. Its structure possesses 1D (In/Co)O3 chains running along the c-axis constructed by alternating face-sharing CoO6 octahedra and (In0.9Co0.1)O6 trigonal prisms. The co-occupation of In3+ and Co3+ at the trigonal prismatic site is evidenced by elementary analysis and determined by the structure refinement. To identify ET-related peptides in fish, we screened the cDNA library of the salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) stomach by means of rapid amplification of cDNA ends, and we cloned cDNAs encoding an ET-related peptide. Methyl halide fluxes were measured from fine (nonwoody) litter samples at a temperate deciduous forest site in Scotland on 16 occasions over more than a year and at a coniferous forest site. The resulting mean (+-1 sd) CH3Br and CH3Cl fluxes were 4.1 +- 3.7 ng kg-1 h-1 and 0.98 +- 0.62 mg kg-1 h-1, respectively, for dry mass leaf litter and 5.7 +- 6.3 ng kg-1 h-1 and 0.47 +- 0.14 mg kg-1 h-1 for dry mass needle litter. Boron (B) is an essential plant micronutrient that is toxic at higher levels. NIP5;1 is a boric acid channel required for B uptake and growth under B deficiency. Accumulation of the NIP5;1 transcript is upregulated under B deficiency in Arabidopsis thaliana roots. To elucidate the mechanism of regulation, the 5' untranslated region (UTR) of NIP5;1 was tested for its ability to confer B-dependent regulation using ?-glucuronidase and green fluorescent protein as reporters. This analysis showed that the 5' UTR was involved in NIP5;1 transcript accumulation in response to B conditions. Penicillic acid-negative mutants were obtained from a color mutant derived from Penicillium cyclopium NRRL 1888 through N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine treatment. One mutant (SK2N6) accumulated 6-methyl-1,2,4-benzenetriol, which was not previously known to be a metabolite of P. cyclopium, in addition to orsellinic acid and orcinol. Type 304 stainless steel (SS) specimens sensitised at 873 K and 973 K for 1, 10 and 100 hours respectively were ion implanted using a 150 keV accelerator at an energy of 70 keV in two different doses of nitrogen namely 1 x 10"1"6 to 1 x 10"1"7 ions/cm"2. Infrared spectra of bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane (C5H8) have been recorded at a resolution (0.0015 cm-1) sufficient to resolve for the first time individual rovibrational lines. This initial report presents the ground state constants for this molecule determined from the detailed analysis of three of the ten infrared-allowed bands, v14(e?) at 540 cm-1, v17(a2?) at 1220 cm-1, v18(a2?) at 832 cm-1, and a partial analysis of the v11(e?) band at 1237 cm-1. The upper states of transitions involving the lowest frequency mode, v14(e?), show no evidence of rovibrational perturbations but those for the v17 and v18 (a2?) modes give clear indication of Coriolis coupling to nearby e? levels. In this study, we measured the effects of different concentrations of paraquat (0,01 mM and 1,0 mM) on the 1-"1"4CO_2 and 6-"1"4CO_2 production of rabbit lung slices and isolated alveolar macrophages, in 20% and 95% oxygen phases respectively. A 95% oxygen phase induced an increase in the 6-"1"4C-glucose oxidation of control lung slices over a 3-hour period, while the increased activity of the pentose pathway over the first 2 hours started to decline during the third hour of incubation. This paper presents a case study in the design and implementation of a numerical weather prediction model on a supercomputer (CRAY-1). Following a historical introduction to the evolution of the model, the governing equations of the model are presented and the numerical solution of these forecast equations is described. A method, based on anion exchange chromatography, is presented for the isolation of "1"3"9Ce after production by a proton-induced nuclear reaction on a thick praseodymium target. After bombardment the target is dissolved in nitric acid and "1"3"9Ce oxidised to the Ce(IV) oxidation state with bromic acid. "1"3"9Ce is then separated form the praseodymium by anion exchange chromatography on a Ag MP-1 resin column in a nitric acid - bromic acid mixture. "1"3"9Ce is sorbed onto the resin column and praseodymium eluted with the acid mixture. The bromic acid is washed out of the column with nitric acid and "1"3"9Ce finally eluted with dilute nitric acid containing sulphur dioxide.
The decay of mass-separated samples of the previously unknown nuclide "7"1Br have been investigated by means of the Chalk River on-line isotope separator. Eleven #gamma#-transitions were assigned to the decay of this nuclide and its half-life was measured to be 21.4 +- 0.6 s. A simple decay scheme for "7"1Br has been constructed incorporating six levels in its daughter, "7"1Se. The half-life of the first excited state in "7"1Se was measured to be 5.5 +- 1.0 #mu#s and the transition from this state to the ground state was found to be highly converted. Systematic trends in the level schemes of "6"7Zn, "6"9Ge and "7"1Se are investigated. (orig.).
Unlike the well-characterized nuclear function of the Notch intracellular domain, it has been difficult to identify a nuclear role for the ligands of Notch. Here we provide evidence for the nuclear function of the Notch ligand Delta-like 1 in colon cancer (CC) cells exposed to butyrate. We demonstrate that the intracellular domain of Delta-like 1 (Dll1icd) augments the activity of Wnt signaling-dependent reporters and that of the promoter of the connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) gene. Data suggest that Dll1icd upregulates CTGF promoter activity through both direct and indirect mechanisms. High-spin states in "1"7"7Ta were produced using the "1"7"0Er("1"1B, 4n) reaction at 55 and 60 MeV. Considerable extensions have been made to the previously known level scheme, and new structures have been found. B(M1)/B(E2) ratios have been extracted for strongly coupled bands. The behavior of the different rotational cascades, in particular the anomalous crossing frequency observed in the [541]1/2"- proton h_9_/_2 band and the occurrence of ''identical bands,'' is discussed. Comparisons are made with projected shell model calculations.

It is shown that during the operation of nuclear fuel cycle facilities and at a modern level of the decontamination factor the "1"2"9I concentration in some natural media (soil, the Earth biosphere, ocean mixing layer) will increase by 4-5 orders. Recommended gradual increase of the decontamnation factor in time for conserving the "1"2"9I concentration level not exceeding one order in comparison with modern one is given. For a genus-11-bridge knot in the 3-sphere, that is, a (1,1)-knot, a middle tunnel is a tunnel that is not an upper or lower tunnel for some (1,1)-position. Most torus knots have a middle tunnel, and non-torus-knot examples were obtained by Goda, Hayashi, and Ishihara. In a previous paper, we generalized their construction and calculated the slope invariants for the resulting examples. We give an interated version of the construction that produces many more examples, and calculate their slope invariants. If one starts with the trivial knot, the iterated construction produces the 2-bridge knots, giving a new calculation of the slope invariants of their tunnels. Together with other information, the examples suggest a general classification conjecture for all tunnels of all tunnel number 1 knots.
The response regulator protein is a core element of two-component signaling pathway. In this study, we investigated functions of BRRG-1 of Botrytis cinerea, a gene that encodes a putative response regulator protein, which is homologous to Rrg-1 in Neurospora crassa. The BRRG-1 gene deletion mutant ?Brrg1-62 was unable to produce conidia. The mutant showed increased sensitivity to osmotic stress mediated by NaCl and KCl, and to oxidative stress generated by H2O2. Additionally, the mutant was more sensitive to the fungicides iprodione, fludioxonil, and triadimefon than the parental strain. A large detector with high redundancy is used to search for various types of anomalous particles in cosmic rays at sea level. The detector is sensitive to zenith angles between 45"0 and 90"0. Previously obtained limits on the fluxes of charge (1/3) and (2/3) particles are reduced to 2.9 x 10"-"1"0 and 2.6 x 10"-"1"0 cm"-"2sr "-"1 sec"-"1, respectively. The flux of ionizing tachyons is determined to be less than 2.4 x 10"-"9 cm"-"2 sr"-"1 sec"-"1. The massive-particle flux limit we obtain is inconsistent with previous claims of such particles assuming that these particles are isotropic in zenith angle.
The elastic and inelastic scattering of "1"4C at 51 MeV from targets of "4"0Ca, "5"6Fe, "6"0Ni, "6"6Zn and "8"8Sr has been measured using a Q3D spectrometer. The "1"4C-nucleus potentials have been derived by optical-model analysis of the observed elastic scattering; the inelastic scattering differential cross sections were interpreted in the distorted-wave Born approximation and also in the coupled-channels approach. The analysis yields "1"4C-nucleus potentials that closely resemble "1"2sup(,)"1"3C and "1"6O potentials. (orig.).
Results of investigation on the effect of microstructure and deformation conditions (temperature and strain rate) on flow stress and critical strain in two phase #alpha# + #beta# titanium alloy Ti-6Al-5Mo-5V-1Cr-1Fe is presented in the paper. The alloy is deformed or torsional plastometer at temperature range 1073-1173 K and at the strain rate #epsilon# = 0.04-4.0 s"-"1. Sequential deformation at 1173 K at the strain rate of 0.4 s"-"1 was also performed with holding times in the range 1-100 s. A 4.1?kbp positive-strand RNA virus known as Diaporthe RNA virus 1 (DRV1) occurs in hypovirulent, non-sporulating isolates of the fungal pathogen Diaporthe perjuncta. A full-length cDNA clone of DRV1 was developed and RNA transcribed from the cDNA clone used to transfect different Diaporthe spp. The transfected species included three D. ambigua isolates and an unidentified Phomopsis asexual state of a Diaporthe sp. BaTi_0_._9(Ni_1_/_2W_1_/_2)_0_._1O_3 ceramics were fabricated and their dielectric properties were investigated. With the sintering temperature increasing from 1250 to 1280 deg. C, the grain size abruptly increases from 1-2 to 20-40 #mu#m, accompanying significant changes in dielectric response. The samples with larger grains exhibit giant dielectric constant characteristics, which are considered to be mainly attributed to the domain boundary effect. The activation energies of the dielectric relaxation E_r_e_l_a_x=0.325 eV reveal the existence of microdomains in larger grains. The ac conductivity results also give the evidence of the domain boundary effect in the present ceramics.

We present a large set of merger simulations of early-type disc galaxies with mass ratios of 1:1 and 3:1 and 10% of the total disc mass in gas. In contrast to the collisionless case equal-mass mergers with gas do not result in very boxy remnants which is caused by the suppression of box orbits and the change of the projected shape of minor-axis tube orbits in the more axisymmetric remnants. The isophotal shape of 3:1 remnants and the global kinematic properties of 1:1 and 3:1 remnants are only weakly affected by the presence of gas. 1:1 remnants are slowly rotating whereas 3:1 remnants are fast rotating and discy. The shape of the stellar LOSVD is strongly influenced by gas. New Schiff base derivatives (L1 and L2) were prepared by the condensation of 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (o-vanillin) and 3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde (iso-vanillin) with 5-methylfurfurylamine. Two new complexes [Ni(L1)2] and [Cu(L1)2] have been synthesized with bidentate NO donor Schiff base ligand (L1). The Ni(II) and Cu(II) atoms in each complex are four coordinated in a square planar geometry. Schiff bases (L1 and L2) and complexes [Ni(L1)2] and [Cu(L1)2] were characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR, UV-vis, mass and 1H, 13C NMR spectroscopies. The crystal structures of the ligand (L2) and complexes [Ni(L1)2] and [Cu(L1)2] have also been determined by using X-ray crystallographic technique.
The properties of the triplet of low-lying states in "1"0"1Mo have been studied through spectroscopy of the #gamma# radation following thermal neutron capture in "1"0"0Mo and #beta#-decay of "1"0"1Nb and through a measurement of the proton angular distributions in the "1"0"0Mo(d, p) reaction with 14 MeV deuteron energy. The half-lives of the 13.5 keV state and the 57.0 keV 5/2"+ state have been measured as 226(7) and 133(7) ns, respectively. The effect of velocity gradient on stagnation region heat transfer augmentation by free stream turbulence was investigated. Heat transfer was measured in the stagnation region of four models with elliptical leading edges with ratios of major to minor axes of 1:1, 1.5:1, 2.25:1, and 3:1. Four geometrically similar, square bar, square mesh, biplane grids were used to generate free stream turbulence with different intensities and length. Heat transfer measurements were made for the following ranges of parameters: Reynolds number, based on leading edge diameter, 37,000 to 228,000; dimensionless leading edge velocity gradient, 1.20 to 1.80; turbulence intensity, 1.1 to 15.9%; and length scale to leading edge diameter ratio, 0.05 to 0.30. GSTD1 is one of several insect glutathione S-transferases capable of metabolizing the insecticide DDT. Here we use crystallography and NMR to elucidate the binding of DDT and glutathione to GSTD1. Neutron energy spectra were measured by the time-of-flight technique with resolutions of 220 keV at angles from 0"0 to 41"0 and 415 keV out to 62"0. The "1"6O induced fission studies of "2"0"9Bi have been carried out at particle energies of 89.5 MeV using gamma ray spectrometry. The cross sections for the production of fission products have been determined. The yield distribution of fission products has been found to be broad (FWHM=16) with a peak near mass 107. The charge distribution in the "1"6O particle induced fission of "2"0"9Bi has been studied at "1"6O particle of 89.5 MeV. Investigations into sexual differentiation and pheromone response in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe are complicated by the need to first starve the cells of nitrogen. Most mating-related experiments are therefore performed on non-dividing cells. Here we overcome this problem by using two mutants that bypass the nutritional requirements and respond to the M-factor mating pheromone in rich medium. The first mutant lacks the cyr1 gene which encodes adenylate cyclase and these cells contain no measurable amounts of cAMP. When M-factor is added to a growing h+ cyr1- strain it causes a transient G1 arrest of cell division, transcription of mat1-Pm, and elongation of the cells to form shmoos. Excitation functions (EFs) for the reaction "1"4"1Pr(#alpha#, n)"1"4"4Pm and "1"4"1Pr(#alpha#, 2n)"1"4"3Pm have been measured using "1"4"1Pr as a target up to 50 MeV #alpha#-particle energy. Stacked foil activation technique and #gamma#-ray spectroscopy using 100 cm"3 Ge (Li) detector, has been used. Excitation functions are also calculated theoretically using Blann's geometry dependent hybrid (GDH) model code ALICE-91, with and without inclusion of pre-equilibrium particle emission. It has been observed that high-energy tails of the EFs are dominated by pre-equilibrium reaction mechanism. With the accepted set of input parameter, initial exciton number n_0=4 (2p + 2n + 0h), a good qualitative agreement is found. However, quantitative agreement for this magic nucleus"1"4"1Pr is also good when theoretical calculations are normalized by a multiple factor of 0.5. ...
Using a sample of 122 million Upsilon(3S) events recorded with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at SLAC, we search for the h_b(1P) spin-singlet partner of the P-wave chi_b(1P) states in the sequential decay Upsilon(3S) --> pi0 h_b(1P), h_b(1P) --> gamma eta_b(1S). We observe an excess of events above background in the distribution of the recoil mass against the pi0 at mass 9902 +/- 4 (stat.) +/- 1 (syst.) MeV/c^2. The width of the observed signal is consistent with experimental resolution, and its significance is 3.0 sigma, including systematic uncertainties. We obtain the value (3.7 +/- 1.1 (stat.) +/- 0.7 (syst.))x 10^{-4} for the product branching fraction BF(Upsilon(3S) --> pi0 h_b) x BF(h_b --> gamma eta_b).
Sparse learning has recently received increasing attention in many areas including machine learning, statistics, and applied mathematics. The mixed-norm regularization based on the L1/Lq norm with q > 1 is attractive in many applications of regression and classification in that it facilitates group sparsity in the model. The resulting optimization problem is, however, challenging to solve due to the structure of the L1/Lq -regularization. Existing work deals with special cases including q = 2,infinity, and they cannot be easily extended to the general case. Abstract Polycystic kidney diseases (PKD) are inherited disorders characterized by fluid-filled cysts primarily in the kidneys. We previously reported differences between the expression of Cux1, p21, and p27 in the cpk and Pkd1 null mouse models of PKD. Embryonic lethality of Pkd1 null mice limits its study to early stages of kidney development. Therefore, we examined mice with a collecting duct specific deletion in the Pkd1 gene. Cux1 was ectopically expressed in the cyst lining epithelial cells of newborn, P7 and P15 Pkd1CD mice. For the estimation of the dispersion trend of tritium discharged from the Wolsung nuclear power plant, the present level of tritium in environmental samples in the vicinity of the Wolsong site has been studied. On the basis of tritium concentrations in environmental samples, the effective dose due to tritium has been estimated for an individual and population within a 16 km radius from the Wolsong site. The annual effective dose of tritium to an inhabitant around the Wolsong site ranged from 0.15 microSv y-1 to 1.3 microSv y-1. The dose level was negligible and much lower than some applicable standards, i.e. the limit on exposure from nuclear fuel cycle to the general public as recommended by ICRP (1 mSv y-1) or US EPA's limit (0.25 mSv y-1). The status of development and commercialization of a modified 9 Cr-1 Mo alloy is presented. The alloy is modified by the addition of 0.06 to 0.10% Nb and 0.18 to 0.25% V. The alloy is recommended for use in the normalized and tempered condition (1040"0C for 1 h, air cooled to room temperature; 760"0C for 1 h, air cooled to room temperature). Heat treatment, Charpy impact, tensile, and creep properties of the alloy are described in detail along with a brief description of other properties. The modified alloy has creep strength that exceeds that of standard 9 Cr-1 Mo and 2 1/4 Cr-1 Mo steels for the temperature range from 427 to 704"0C. The total-elongation and reduction-of-area values for all test temperatures and rupture times up to 22,500 h exceed 15 and 70%, respectively. Biochemical studies have indicated that Mac-1 is a constitutive heterodimer in vitro. Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune connective tissue disorder characterized by a widespread microangiopathy, autoimmunity and fibrosis of the skin and of various internal organs. Microangiopathy is characterized by a reduced capillary density and an irregular chaotic architecture that lead to chronic tissue hypoxia. The mass and energy distributions for low-energy p- and alpha-particle induced fission of "1"8"7","1"8"8Ir and "1"9"5Au and "3He-induced fission of sufficiently heated "1"8"8Ir and "1"9"4Au have been measured with use of fast spectrometer of complementary fragments. From Au to Ir, the shape of the mass distributions undergoes substantial changes related to specific dependence of the saddle shell corrections on A and Z fissioning nuclei. The results are compared with theoretical predictions.
COMPLIS is an experimental facility designed to carry out spectroscopic studies on radioisotopes produced by disintegration of elements available at CERN's Booster-ISOLDE on-line isotope separator. During recent series of experimental runs, hyperfine structure measurements have yielded information on nuclear moments and deformations of platinum and iridium isotopes. For the first time, population by #alpha#-decay from Hg was exploited to investigate "1"7"8"-"1"8"1Pt--the most neutron-deficient Pt isotopes yet studied. Successful measurements have recently been carried out on "1"8"2"-"1"8"9Ir.
The nuclei "8"1Zr and "8"5Mo with T_z=1/2 have been reinvestigated via their #beta#-delayed proton emissions with p-#gamma# coincidence measurement. The half-life of "8"1Zr has been measured to be 5.3#+-#0.5 s, which agrees with one of the two previous values. For "8"5Mo, the measured half-life is 3.2#+-#0.2 s, which revises the previous value. In this paper a comparison between calculations of severe accidents occurred from WWER-1000 with ASTEC code specified for an event of full unloading with relief valves stuck opened with no hydroaccumulators intervention is presented. The purpose of the analyses provided is to present the relationship between the improvements of the actual version (ASTEC Vl.2 rev. 1) and ASTEC V1.1 p2 like: code modifications, incoming data improvements. Such discrepancies are to be examined. Case by case suggestions for ASTEC improvements are to be provided.
The E1 and E3 transition operators in the sdf-IBA model are discussed. An effective E1 operator containing one- and two-body terms explains very well the E1 data in transitional and rotational nuclei. The E1 parameters for rotational nuclei are obtained by imposing a constraint on the IBA model namely, the validity of Alaga rules for ``pure K`` states. The systematic behavior of the octupole strength is well reproduced using a one-body octupole operator. The anomalously large fragmentation of the low-energy octupole strength in non-rotational nuclei is shown to be a signature of the O(6) dynamical symmetry.

Creep properties of modified 9 Cr-1 Mo steel, an alloy significantly improved in elevated-temperature strength over 2 1/4 Cr-1 Mo and other similar alloys, are presented here. Data are primarily on material in the normalized and tempered condition. Effects of variables such as isothermal annealing treatment, cold work, normalizing temperature, tempering temperature, notch, and biaxial stress state have also been examined. Data analysis and comparisons have shown that modified 9 Cr-1 Mo alloy is very insensitive in response to several material variables, heat treatments, and specimen design variables.

We consider the alternating sign matrices of the odd order that have some kind of central symmetry. Namely, we deal with matrices invariant under the half-turn, quarter-turn and flips in both diagonals. In all these cases, there are two natural structures in the centre of the matrix. For example, for the matrices invariant under the half-turn the central element is equal $\\pm 1$. It was recently found that $A^+_{HT}(2m+1)/A^-_{HT}(2m+1)$=(m+1)/m. We conjecture that similar very simple relations are valid in the two remaining cases.
Phase relations in the ternary system Ce-Pd-Si have been established for the isothermal section at 800 deg. C based on X-ray powder diffraction and EMPA techniques on about 130 alloys, which were prepared by arc-melting under argon or powder reaction sintering. CuPt-type ordering in In{sub 0.49}Al{sub 0.51}P is studied by TEM. The lattice-matched film was grown by MOCVD on a GaAs substrate oriented 10{sup o} off (001) towards [110], at 650 C and 25 nm/min. TEM [110] and [1{bar 1}0] cross-sections (XS) were made by wedge polishing and 2 kV Ar ion milling. In CuPt-type ordering of In{sub 0.52}Ga{sub 0.48}P, alternating In-Ga-In-Ga {l_brace}111{r_brace} planes of group III atoms produce 1/2 {bar 1}11 and 1/2 1{bar 1}1 order spots in the 110 SADP, while the [1{bar 1}0] SADP shows no order spots [1-3]. For analyzing the direct contamination pathway of the radionuclide in radish, a solution containing "8"5Sr, "1"0"3Ru and "1"3"4Cs was sprayed to the aerial part of the plant in a greenhouse at 5 different times before harvest. Plant interception factor showed little difference among radionuclides and increased with decreasing time interval between application and harvest with the maximum value of 0.86. The fractions of the initial deposition that remained in the radish plant at harvest were in the range of 16#approx#37% for "8"5Sr, 15#approx#68% for "1"0"3Ru and 35#approx#58% for "1"3"4Cs. We have observed the CH_3OH J = 2-1, SiO J = 2-1, C"3"4S J = 2-1, H"1"3CO"+ J = 1-0, HN"1"3C J = 1-0, CCH N = 1-0, OCS J = 8-7, and SO J_N = 2_2-1_1 lines toward 20 massive clumps, including Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) 8 #mu#m dark sources (infrared dark clouds) and MSX 8 #mu#m sources, by using the Nobeyama Radio Observatory 45 m telescope. We have found that the velocity widths of the CH_3OH and C"3"4S lines are broader than those of the H"1"3CO"+ line in the MSX dark sources. On the other hand, they are comparable to the velocity width of the H"1"3CO"+ line in the MSX sources. In addition, the [SiO]/[H"1"3CO"+] abundance ratio is found to be enhanced in the MSX dark sources in comparison with the MSX sources. These results suggest ...
Decaborane (B_1_0H_1_4) cluster ions were implanted into n-Si(100) substrates to fabricate shallow p"+/n junctions. Implant energies of 2 keV, 5 keV, and 20 keV, equivalent to implant energies of the monomer boron ion of 174 eV, 435 eV, and 1.74 keV, respectively, were used at dosages of 1 X 10"1"2 /cm"2 and 1 X 10"1"3 /cm"2. The aim of this work is to understand the reasons for the selectivity shown in the complexation by unsaturated heteropolyanions (HPA) of actinides (An) which are oxidized to the number +IV. Different studies have been carried out, both in solution and in solid state, on P_2W_1_7O_6_1"1"0"- and its complexes with Zn"2"+, UO_2"2"+, Ce"4"+, Th"4"+ and U"4"+ to characterize the nature of the complexation site offered to the cation. K"#pi#=20"- and 49/2"- yrast isomers have been discovered in "1"7"6Ta and "1"7"7Ta, with meanlives of 1.4 ms and 0.19 ms, respectively. The long meanlives arise from substantial K-hindrance in the "1"7"6Ta case but from spin-trapping in the "1"7"7Ta case. Quasiparticle calculations, which treat the Fermi and pairing energies self-consistently, reproduce the excitation energies of these isomers and the other multi-quasiparticle high-K states observed. Due to blocking, pairing is significantly reduced in the 3-quasiparticle states, the extent depending on the specific configurations. For the first time a comprehensive level and decay scheme has been obtained for a T=(5/2) nucleus in the s-d shell ("2"7Na) by using a radioactive beam and target. Particle-#gamma# and p-#gamma#-#gamma# coincidences were measured following the "1"4C("1"4C,p#gamma#)"2"7Na reaction at E_l_a_b=22 MeV. The results do not support an inversion of the 2s_1_/_2 and 1d_5_/_2 orbitals, as previously proposed for T_z#>=#3, but they do suggest an increased N=16 gap between the 2s_1_/_2 and 1d_3_/_2 orbitals due to the neutron excess. A consistent interpretation of the level scheme in terms of the s-d shell model using the USD Hamiltonian is possible below 4 MeV, but differences increase at higher excitation energies. The temperature dependence of T/sub 1/ spin-lattice relaxation time on /sup 51/V, /sup 69/Ga, /sup 71/Ga and Knight shift on /sup 51/V and /sup 29/Si nuclei in polycrystalline V/sub 3/Si, V/sub 3/Ga, V/sub 3/Ge and in the monocrystal V/sub 3/Si in normal state is investigated. For V/sub 3/Si and V/sub 3/Ga a rapid growth (T/sub 1/T)/sup -1/ is observed with temperature decrease while for V/sub 3/Ge the maximum (T/sub 1/T)/sup -1/ at T approximately equal to 60 K has been found. The 10.3-h "1"6"5Er, decaying by electron capture to stable "1"6"5Ho, offers an excellent promise for use in diagnostic nuclear medicine, especially in conjuction with multiwire proportional-counter cameras. Using an ultra-high-resolution Si(Li) photon spectrometer, L and K x-ray photon yields in "1"6"5Er decay have been measured. The ratio P/sub L//P/sub K/ of electron-capture probabilities in L and K shells is determined to be 0.196 +- 0.030, in good agreement with theory. Estimates of Auger electron yields and yields of very-low-energy electrons from Coster--Kronig transitions are presented. Levels of "1"6"9Er and "1"7"1Er radioactive impurities in the reactor-produced "1"6"5Er sample are experimentally determined. Whole-body dose estimates for "1"6"5Er are given. These compare favorably with "9"9Tc dose.
Mass attenuation coefficients of amino acids viz. glycerine (C_2H_5NO_2), 1-Serine (C_3H_7NO_3), 1-Theronine (C_4H_9NO_3), 1-Proline (C_5H_9NO_2), 1-Valine (C_5H_1_1NO_2) and 1-Phenylalanine (C_9H_1_1NO_2) in aqueous solutions have been determined at 81, 356, 511, 662, 1173 and 1332 keV by the gamma-ray transmission method in a narrow beam good geometry setup. Precisely measured densities of these solutions were used for the determination of these coefficients which varied systematically with the corresponding changes in the concentrations (g/cm"3) of the solutions. Molar extinction coefficients of amino acids were then obtained at these energies and were found to be in good agreement with the theoretical results. Some kind of one-dimensional (1D) peanut-shaped fullerene polymers (PSFPs) exhibit metallic properties, but their occurrence conditions are not yet clarified. By using the VASP (Vienna ab-initio simulation package) with density functional theory (DFT) and projector augmented wave (PAW) method, we have performed first-principles electronic structure calculations of four basic 1D PSFPs, T1, T2, T6, and T7 (the name of T1-T6 is the same as that of Wang et al. [9]) and two associated 1D PSFPs, T1SW1 and T6SW that are created by generalized Stone-Wales transformation (GSW) from T1 and T6. A measurement of the t{bar t} production cross section at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV in the dilepton final states using a lepton+track selection and secondary vertex b-tagging is presented. One of the two leptons from the decay of the t{bar t} pair is allowed to be identified only as an isolated track to improve the selection efficiency. The result is combined with a measurement in the t{bar t} {yields} e{mu} final state. The measurements are based on 370 pb{sup -1} of data collected with the D0 experiment at the Tevatron collider. The preliminary cross section obtained in the combined lepton+track and e{mu} channel is: {sigma}{sub t{bar t}} = 8.6{sub -1.7}{sup +1.9}(stat) {+-} 1.1(syst) {+-} 0.6(lumi) pb.
The authors measure the dipion mass spectrum in X(3872) {yields} J/{psi}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} decays using 360 pb{sup -1} of {bar p}p collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector. The spectrum is fit with predictions for odd C-parity ({sup 3}S{sub 1}, {sup 1}P{sub 1}, and {sup 3}D{sub J}) charmonia decaying to J/{psi}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, as well as event C-parity states in which the pions are from {rho}{sup 0} decay. The latter case also encompasses exotic interpretations, such as a D{sup 0}{bar D}*{sup 0} molecule. Only the {sup 3}S{sub 1} and J/{psi} {rho} hypotheses are compatible with the data. Since {sup 3}S{sub 1} is untenable on other grounds, decay via J/{psi} {rho} is favored, which implies C = +1 for the X(3872). Models for different J/{psi}-{rho} angular momenta L are considered. ...
The half-life of "1"0"9Cd was measured by following the decay of sources from a radiochemically pure solution with two different measuring systems: an ionisation chamber and a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. The measurements were performed over a period of 3.6 years, i.e. about 2.8 half-lives of "1"0"9Cd. The resulting half-life values and detailed uncertainty budgets (k=1) are presented for both systems. The result obtained with the ionisation chamber, 462.36 (33) days, and the one obtained with the HPGe detector, 461.92 (76) days, are mutually consistent. The weighted mean of our measured values, T_1_/_2("1"0"9Cd)=462.29 (30) days, is consistent with the currently recommended values of 461.4 (12) days and 462.0 (3) days. The level structure and configurations of "2"1"6At have been studied by observing the alpha decay of "2"2"0Fr, which is in secular equilibrium with "2"2"4Ac. Six of the 16 observed states are tentatively assigned to the configuration #pi#(h_9_/_2)"3#upsilon#(g_9_/_2)"5, and four to the mixed configuration #pi#(h_9_/_2)"3#upsilon#(g_9_/_2)"4(i_1_1_/_2)+#pi#(h_9_/_2)"2(f _7_/_2)#upsilon#(g_9_/_2)"5. These two configurations in "2"1"6At are compared with the corresponding configurations in "2"1"2Bi and "2"1"0Bi. The /sup 31/P NMR method was first applied to characterize in vivo phosphorylation of H1 and H5 in calf thymus and chicken erythrocytes as well as in vitro phosphorylation of H1 and H5 by cAMP-dependent protein kinase. The amino acid residues phosphorylated in vivo in the histones were exclusively serine residues, and the mole fraction of phosphoserine was estimated to be 0.34 and 0.27 per molecule of calf thymus H1 and chicken erythrocyte H5, respectively. Interestingly, chicken erythrocyte H1 was not phosphorylated in vivo. MoSi_2-particulate-reinforced #alpha#-SiAlON ceramic composites 10, 20, 25, and 30 vol% were prepared by at 1,750--1,800C. The #alpha#-SiAlON matrix was of the composition (Y_0_._4_8Si_1_0_._0_0Al_2_._3_0O_1_._1_7N_1_5_._2_9). The hardness for the fully dense samples changed from HV10 = 22.5 to 15.3 GPa and the toughness from 3.2 to around 5.2 MPa#centre dot#m"1"/"2 when up to 30 vol% MoSi_2 was present. Two interesting microstructural features have been found. First, with an increasing amount of MoSi_2 a pronounced coalescence of MoSi_2 particles formed a ''dual phase'' material. The second effect was the growth of elongated #alpha#-SiAlON grains in the matrix with 10 vol% MoSi_2 added. The oxidation resistance has been determined, to be unaffected by the addition of 20 vol% MoSi_2 at 1,250 C in oxygen gas of 1 atm pressure.
We report $^{7}$Li pulsed NMR measurements in polycrystalline and single crystal samples of the quasi one-dimensional S=1 antiferromagnet LiVGe$_2$O$_6$, whose AF transition temperature is $T_{\\text{N}}\\simeq 24.5$ K. The field ($B_0$) and temperature ($T$) ranges covered were 9-44.5 T and 1.7-300 K respectively. The measurements included NMR spectra, the spin-lattice relaxation rate ($T_1^{-1}$), and the spin-phase relaxation rate ($T_2^{-1}$), often as a function of the orientation of the field relative to the crystal axes. The spectra indicate an AF magnetic structure consistent with that obtained from neutron diffraction measurements, but with the moments aligned parallel to the c-axis. There is an increasing interest in using radioisotopes of rare earth elements for internal radiotherapy and for imaging in nuclear medicine. "1"7"7Lu is one of the promising radionuclides. This article reports on the first measurements of the excitation function for the production of "1"7"7Lu with proton-beam energies up to 17 MeV on natural hafnium targets. The experimental cross sections for the reaction "n"a"tHf(p,x)"1"7"7Lu were obtained by the activation of a stacked-foil target and subsequent gamma spectrometry. Theoretical cross sections were calculated up to 35 MeV with the EMPIRE nuclear reaction model code. The measured and calculated cross sections were used for deriving the thick-target yields and for estimating the production of other nuclides than "1"7"7Lu. We present new low resolution Spitzer mid-infrared spectroscopy of a sample of 20 ROSAT selected local Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). We detect strong AGN continuum in all and clear PAH emission in 70% of the sources. The 6.2 micron PAH luminosity spans three orders of magnitudes, from ~10^(39) erg/s to ~10^(42) erg/s providing strong evidence for intense ongoing star formation in the circumnuclear regions of these sources. Using the IRS/Spitzer archive we gather a large number of additional NLS1s and their broad line counterparts (BLS1s) and constructed NLS1 and BLS1 sub-samples to compare them in various ways. The comparison shows a clear separation according to FWHM(H_beta) such that objects with narrower broad H_beta lines are the strongest PAH emitters. The Drosophila melanogaster tissue-specific transcription factor NTF-1 was originally identified in vitro as a protein that could bind to and activate transcription from the Dopa decarboxylase (Ddc) gene. A structure-function analysis of NTF-1 led to the identification of a discrete amino-terminal activation domain. Here, we report that an NTF-1 mutant lacking the activation domain acts as a trans-dominant inhibitor of NTF-1 activation in tissue culture cells by forming inactive heterodimers with the full-length protein. Ectopically expressing this dominant-negative protein or the full-length protein in developing Drosophila embryos leads to dire developmental consequences. We report on the detection of SiO and water masers toward a newly found bipolar nebula, IRAS 19312+1950. This object exhibits extreme red IRAS color log (F25/F12)=0.5 and log (F60/F25)=0.7 and a nebulosity having a size of about 30" extended to the South-West in the 2MASS near-infrared image. Toward this object, we have detected emission from the H2O 6(1,6)-5(2,3) transition, the SiO J=1-0, v=1 and 2, and J=2-1, v=1 transitions, and the SO 2(2)--1(1) and H13CN J=1-0 transitions. The thermal lines of SO and H13CN are shifted by about 12 km/s in radial velocity with respect to the maser lines, indicating that thermal emission comes from the background molecular cloud. Cyclothiazomycin B1 (CTB1) is an antifungal cyclic thiopeptide isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. HA 125-40. CTB1 inhibited the growth of several filamentous fungi including plant pathogens along with swelling of hyphae and spores. The antifungal activity of CTB1 was weakened by hyperosmotic conditions, and hyphae treated with CTB1 burst under hypoosmotic conditions, indicating increased cell wall fragility. CTB1-sensitive fungal species contain high levels of cell wall chitin and/or chitosan. Unlike nikkomycin Z, a competitive inhibitor of chitin synthase (CHS), CTB1 did not inhibit CHS activity. The resolving power of Gammasphere has allowed for the observation of eleven rotational bands (eight of which are new) and over 430 transitions (#approx#350 of which are new) in this nucleus. Many interband transitions have been observed such that the relative spins and excitation energies of the 11 bands have been established. This is an unusual circumstance in an odd-odd study. Configurations have been assigned to most of these bands based upon features such as alignment properties, band crossings, B(M1)/B(E2) ratios, and the additivity of Routhians. The magnetic susceptibility chi of Cesub(x)Lasub(1-x)B_6, Cesub(x)Eusub(1-x)B_6, Smsub(x)Lasub(1-x)B_6, and Smsub(x)Cesub(1-x)B_6 is investigated for temperatures of 80 to 1000 K. chi of Cesub(x)Lasub(1-x)B_6 and Cesub(x)Eusub(1-x)B_6 obeys the Curie-Weiss law. The composition dependence of effectiv magnetic moment #mu#sub(eff) exhibits an unusual behaviour. The value of #mu#sub(eff) per cerium ion abruptly decreases on substituting the cerium ions in CeB_6 by lanthanium ions. The values of the Weiss constants agree with the conclusions of the RKKY theory of indirect exchange by conduction electrons. Lithium ion conducting glass ceramics composed of the crystalline conductive phase Li{sub 1.4}Al{sub 0.4}(Ge{sub 1-x}Ti{sub x}){sub 1.6}(PO{sub 4}){sub 3}(x=0-1.0) with the Nasicon-type structure have been synthesized and characterized by DTA, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and complex impedance techniques. The effect of X-irradiation on production of MUC1 was studied with human colon carcinoma HT-29 cells. As evaluated by immunocytochemical staining, the percentages or MUC1-positive cells in cells at 4 days after 6 Gy irradiation and in unirradiated control cells were 52#+-#3.5% (n=6) and 26#+-#2.8% (n=6), respectively. Flow-cytometric analysis of living cells showed that MUC1 began to rise from day 1, reaching a plateau by day 4 after 6 Gy irradiation. Western blot analysis with monoclonal antibody MY.1E12 against glycosylated MUC1 (mature form) showed dose-dependent increases of two bands (500 and 390 kDa) corresponding to two polymorphic MUC1 alleles. Derivatives of angiotensin with a sarcosine substitution at the carboxy terminus and an aliphatic amino acid substitution at the amino terminus have been shown to be competitive ligands for the angiotensin receptor. Scatchard plots derived from saturation isotherm data in bovine adrenal particulates consistently demonstrate three to five times the number of binding sites for "1"2"5I-Sarl,Ile8-AII ("1"2"5I-SI-AII) than for "1"2"5I-AII in experiments in which the two ligands are run side-by-side. A significant difference between "1"2"5I-AII and "1"2"5I-SI-AII binding to detergent solubilized angiotensin receptors was observed.
