Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)
In recent years, there has been increasing demand for resource-recycling of waste plastic, especially due to the introduction of legislation on recycling of materials used for packages of household goods. Methods of recycling waste plastic from household goods are currently still under development, and appropriate techniques to deal with such waste are required. Toshiba has developed a technique to dehydrochlorinate plastic containing polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This paper introduces our petrolization and dehydrochlorination system for waste plastic containing PVC. (author)

Hybrid vehicles have two power supplies as engine and electric motor which are used most efficiently corresponding to objects respectively to attain energy-saving and low pollution. In this paper, factors concerning the fuel economy of hybrid vehicles and potential thereof are examined, and the possibility of reducing fuel cost by half is described. As possible modes of highly efficient hybrid vehicles, series hybrid vehicles (SHEV) of conventional internal combustion engine, parallel hybrid vehicles using EV in combination, series-parallel hybrid vehicles (SPHV), series type fuel cell type vehicles, ceramic engine-turbo compound power generating SPHV as well as SHEV, and ceramics gas turbine engine power generating SHEV are mentioned. 10 refs., 14 figs.

Nonlinear effect in vibroseis data; Vibroseis kiroku ni oite mitomerareru hisenkei koka
Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)
This paper describes nonlinear effect recognized in Vibroseis data. Harmonics is a wave of frequency in integer factors generated in association with basic sweep vibrated by Vibroseis. Harmonics is generated because vibration in the vicinity of seismic source contains nonlinear terms. Seismic exploration using the reflection method often discusses propagation of seismic waves hypothesized as a linear phenomenon. Vibroseis data analysis, however, requires evaluation of the effect of the harmonics on accuracy. Vibroseis investigation measures may be taken by eliminating n-order harmonics by using the phase control method, and generating seismic source sweep in which the phase is shifted by 180/(n-1) each time in order to leave the basic sweep. Methods to increase the sweep length include a method to expel strain to a location outside the range of the subject travel time. Up-sweep (a sweep changing from low frequencies to higher frequencies) is also a means capable of avoiding harmonics ...

This paper introduces marketability and parts application of PBT in the automotive field. Based on the pursuits in automobiles of weight reduction as measures to improve engine performance, drive performance, and fuel consumption, as well as trends of higher class car orientation, market expansion is expected on engineering resins including PBT. Adoption of PBT/polycarbonate (PC)-based alloy resins is on increase for use in external car parts because of the chemical resistance in PBT, low-temperature shock resistance and appearance of PC. Substitution from Nylon resin in connector application is progressing rapidly because of problems in dimensional stability and compound noise. Air bag sensor parts need to be free of maloperation due to contamination and corrosion in metal contacts caused from gases generated from formed parts, hence development of resins of low gas generation grade is wanted. Valves for exhaust control require high-temperature rigidity, dimensional stability, ...

Fuel processing equipment for fuel cell plant. Nenryo denchi plant no nenryo shori sochi
Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)
Activated charcoal which is the desulfurizing agent for the fuel cell plant can be used only at the normal temperature, and it must be placed upstream of the fuel gas, increasing the displacement flow of the fuel gas processed in the desulfurizer. In addition, a large quantity of activated charcoal must be filled or the frequency of its exchange must be increased because activated charcoal used at the normal temperature has little sulfur absorbing capacity. This invention is concerned with provision of a desulfurizer in the downstream of the fuel gas compressor of the fuel cell plant to remove sulfur content in the fuel gas by this desulfurizer. As a result, the displacement flow of the processing gas is decreased to increase the processing capacity of the desulfurizing agent. In addition, hydrogen recycling can be eliminated to realize compact arrangement of the equipment and economization of energy consumption. Metal oxide based desulfurizers of copper, iron, zinc, manganese, etc. ...

This project is a seven year plan starting from 1997, and is aiming at developing vehicles that use the clean energy instead of petroleum, consume 1/2 of the running energy and discharge 1/2 of the CO{sub 2} of the existing vehicles. The research and development are respectively conducted for every kind of vehicles. Namely, for cars, the developments focus on methanol improved fuel battery cars and ANG series hybrid vehicles carried with flywheel battery. For 2 ton loading trucks, they are CNG self-ignition ceramics engine, capacitor/battery in combination use, series hybrid vehicles in combination with discharge energy recovery technology, CNG rarefaction combustion engine, use of lithium ion battery, and series/parallel hybrid vehicles etc. And, LNG mirror cycle engine, capacitor carrying, series hybrid vehicle, dimethylether engine, flywheel battery or capacitor carrying series hybrid vehicle etc., are for public transportation bus. The demonstration test of a power system stabilizer, employing a fuzzy theory, in the two hydroelectric power stations of Kyusyu Electric Power Co., Inc. is described. The PSS inputs auxiliary signals to the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) of a generator and generates an electric torque in the direction opposite to the operating direction of a generator to enhance the damping effect and improve the system stability. Usually, the change in the slide information of a generator is detected, and the phase adjustment is performed so that the damping is the optimum value. However, since the damping is optimized in the specific system state, no complete damping may be obtained when the system state is changed. A fuzzy theory was thus applied for the control operation part. In a secondary fuzzy PSS, the velocity and acceleration were calculated from the slide information of a generator to produce a control signal. In the third dimension, moreover, the position (integral information of ...

Four HVDC (high voltage DC) {+-} 250kV submarine OF (oil-filled) cables are to be installed each capable of 1.4-million kW for one dipole channel and two returns for forwarding to Yura Switchyard a part of the power to be generated by a Tachibanawan coal-fired power plant to open in 2000. The first cable is now being laid. They are to cover a distance of 48km on the sea bottom, and their 190mm diameter is the largest in the world and this decreases the required number of cables for a reduction in the construction cost. The installation is executed by use of a dedicated cable laying ship loaded with cables. The ship is equipped with five thruster screws by adjusting which a cable is fed into the sea and laid on the bottom with high positional accuracy in all directions, and with a 10m-accurate DPS (Dynamic Positioning System) besides GPS (Global Positioning System). Operating on the sea bottom is a simultaneous laying/burying machine which buries the cable 2-3m deep in the sea bottom. ...

The present paper explains the exhaust sources of and measures against CO2, and possibility of driving the electric cars which utilize the solar energy. In the combustion-related field, the thermal power generation attained to 24.6% which was the largest in exhaust quantity of CO2 on a division-by-division basis in FY 1990. On the consumers' side, four large consumption type industries which are steel, cement, paper, pulp and chemical industries totally occupy 64.2% of the exhaust quantity from all the industries. The emission from the cars occupies 17% of all the traffic-related exhaust quantity. The measures consist of decrease, fixation and absorption, among which the decrease is important. Newly developed electric cars comprise GM's Impact in spring, 1990, Nissan's FEN in 1991 and Tokyo Electric Power's IZA. The IZA is a 1800cc class direct drive system-driven sporty sedan which has been much improved for heightening the performance. Having four ...
