Practical examples about the foundation of soil improvement in the Osaka south port. Osaka nanko ni okeru kairyo jibanjo no kiso no jisshirei

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The foundation is a key to safety of any structure built on reclaimed land in coastal areas. This paper gives examples of reclamation methods, ground improvement works, foundations adopted, and consequent land subsidence as for structures directly borne by the underlying ground. Structures built on the recently reclaimed land often stand on piles driven into gravel layers. But an emphasis in pile design in usually placed on bearing capacity, with little consideration given to land subsidence and its effects. Appropriate ground improvement works, if followed by an enough consolidation period, produce satisfactory results for both direct and pile foundations. Low and light structures can be more economically built on direct foundations. It will be still safer for those structures if floating foundations or other measures are taken for preventing increases in load. 5 refs., 16 figs.

Seismic response of pile-supported structure considering nonlinearity of superstructure and pile, and liquefaction of surrounding ground; Shuhen jiban no ekijoka oyobi kui no hisenkeisei wo koryoshita kui shiji tatemono no jishin oto kaiseki

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Recent earthquake disasters have revealed the importance of countermeasures against soil Liquefaction in seismic design. In particular, the 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu earthquake caused several types of severe damages to pile foundations. This paper describes an analysis method for soil liquefaction using simple parameters such as SPT-N values and seismic response analyses for the pile-supported structure to consider soil-structure interaction effects and soil non-linearity using a modified Penzien model. It is important to find a way to determine the region of surrounding soil whose behavior is identical to that of piles. This paper adopts the thin layer element method to systematically determine the volume of the surrounding soil. The responses of pile-supported structure are similar, whether soil liquefaction and nonlinearity of pile are considered or not. However, the bending moment of pile become large as to soil liquefaction, and small as to nonlinearity of pile. (author)

Improvement of liquefaction solvent. Increase of light oil yield with a reduction in catalyst addition; Ekika yozai no kairyo kenkyu. Sekitan ekikayu no keishitsuka to shokubai tenkaryo no teigen

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

For developing coal liquefaction processes, it is an important problem to improve the light oil yield with increased oil yield. It was previously reported that distillate mainly containing lighter fraction can be produced with high oil yield by reducing the iron/sulfur catalyst addition in slurry, by recycling gas in the process operation, by utilizing these effects, and by using heavy oil as recycling solvent. In this study, the maximum distillate yield of Victorian brown coal was investigated through continuous liquefaction using a bench scale unit. In addition, operation conditions for obtaining sufficient oil yield were investigated under the reduced catalyst addition into one-third. Consequently, it was confirmed that the maximum content of lighter fraction in distillate product was obtained with reduced catalyst addition by using heavy oil as recycling solvent, by adopting new catalyst, and by utilizing effects of CLB recycling and gas recycling in maximum. It was also revealed ...

Study for developing method of repairing interior of duct. Kanro naimen hoshu koho no kaihatsu kenkyu

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

A hose lining process, used widely for underground service structures, such as for city gas, and water and sewerage pipes, was adopted to repair interiors of underground wire raceways, and improvements were made for power cable pipe use, including long size construction, inner diameter assurance, and flame retardation. The sealing hose as a lining material consists of a fabric layer woven by warps of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and wefts of combined PBT fibers and glassfibers, the fabric being coated with polyurethane resin on one side. The other side of the fabric is coated with heat hardening resin made of epoxy resin as the main ingredient and aromatic amine as the hardening agent to assure close adhesion of the sealing hose onto the pipe interior. Mimic raceways were used to verify the lining material for its abrasion coefficient, mechanical strength, wear resistance, water cut-off performance, chemical resistance, and shape retention performance against external pressure. ...

Proposition for execution control of bearing stratum in bored precast pile method. Umekomi kui koho ni okeru shijiso kakunin no tame no seko kanri hoho no teian

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

As a parameter for execution control of confirming a bearing stratum, which is most important in a bored precast pile method, discussions were made on the relativity between the product AT'' of a load current value A'' in an electric motor driving an auger used to drill pit holes with an excavation time T'' and a value N,'' a result of the standard penetration test of the ground. As a result, although the relativity of the N'' value has some variance in the ground of diluvial clay, they correspond well to each other in other kinds of ground. In pile bearing strata in particular, they correspond very well to each other regardless of soil textures of the ground, proving clearly that the AT'' value can be used as an effective parameter for confirmation of and penetration into the bearing stratum. Therefore, tips of all the piles used in one construction site can be driven to about ...

Geotechnical treatment of generated soil and wastes, and their effective use. Burial of wastes and use of thus-formed sites; Hasseido oyobi haikibutsu no jiban kogakuteki shori to yuko riyo. Haikibutsu no umetate to atochi riyo

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

To use such sites very effectively, pile foundations will be used for soil stabilization and for important structures for the prevention of subsidence. Negative friction that may ensue from the differential settlement of the soil has to be prevented. Measures against gas will include gas collecting and exhausting facilities in the lower parts of structures, natural and forced exhaust systems, and gas detection/warning units. For revegetation, plants strong against bad soil should be selected, they should be protected from generated gas with protecting sheets or the like, and a thick layer of vegetation-capable soil needs to be laid. Replacement, compaction, and solidification are the fundamentals of soil improvement at wastes final treatment locations and of soil-related pollution prevention in the vicinity of the newly produced sites. Across the country, the service life expectancy is approximately 7-8 years for general wastes and approximately 2.3 years for industrial wastes, and ...

Development of an unmanned construction method in a caisson type pile foundation pit for power transmission; Soden`yo shinso kiso konai mujinka koho no kaihatsu

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

For large transmission steel towers to be built in a mountainous area, caisson type pile foundations are often applied. The works for construction of this kind of foundation are manned operations such as drilling, arranging reinforcements, concrete laying, etc. in a narrow vertical pit which is 3m in diameter and about 20m in depth, but securing labour force of good quality for such works becomes increasingly difficult. In order to cope with the above situation and achieve reduction of costs, shortening of construction period, improvement of safety, saving of manpower, etc. a power supply company and construction companies have developed jointly a method of unmanned construction in a caisson type pile foundation pit. This method consists of the use of a caisson type pile full size excavator (this consists of an excavator proper, a vacuum soil discharging device, a monitor/controller, a load crane and a reaction pad, and performs continuously unmanned operations in a pit of fullsize ...
