Non-first order (FO) kinetics models are of three types; second order (SO), general order (GO) and mixed order (MO). It is shown that all three of these have constraints in their energy level schemes and their applicable parameter values. In nature such restrictions are not expected to exist. The thermoluminescence (TL) glow peaks produced by these models shift their position and change their shape as the trap occupancies change. Such characteristics are very unlike those found in samples of real materials. In these models, in general, retrapping predominates over recombination. It is shown that the quasi-equilibrium (QE) assumption implied in the derivation of the TL equation of these models is quite valid, thus disproving earlier workers' conclusion that QE cannot be held under retrapping dominant conditions. However notwithstanding their validity, they suffer from the shortcomings as stated above and have certain lacunae. For example, the kinetic order ...

The impact properties of high-strength low alloy TRIP steels such as 'TRIP-aided dual-phase steel' and 'TRIP-aided bainitic steel' associated with the transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) of retained austenite were investigated for some applications to the automotive impact members. The TRIP steels possessed far higher impact absorbed value and lower ductile-brittle transition temperature than the conventional ferrite-martensite and ferrite-pearlite steels. The stress relaxation resulting from the strain-induced transformation of retained austenite islands or films improved the impact properties in terms of suppressing void and/or crack initiation and these propagation. The best impact properties were completed in the steel composing of uniform fine bainitic lath structure and a large amount of stable interlath retained austenite films. (author)
Early in 1988 RWE decided to overhaul the power station at Goldenberg. This was necessary due to the age of the plant, the obligation to supply heat and process steam and recent amendments of environmental legislation. After analysing demands and needs one developed a plant concept with a 290 t/h and a 400 t/h steam generator. Due to lack of space the decision was made in favour of a circulating atmospheric fluidised bed combustion instead of steam generators with pulverised lignite combustion as these steam generators take up much more space due to the legally required desulphurisation plants for gaseous emissions. Apart from generating steam RWE wishes to gain experience with this combustion technology and test it for suitability and use in large-scale plant. Beta-21S is a new, metastable-beta titanium alloy which exhibits excellent oxidation resistance and mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. From a weld solidification standpoint, this alloy chemistry is of particular interest because its major beta-stabilizing elements (Mo and Nb) both exhibit equilibrium partitioning ratios (k_o) greater than unity, indicating their simultaneous partitioning during weld solidification to the initial solid to form (i.e., dendrite cores), and correspondingly their depletion in the final regions of solidification (i.e., dendrite interstices). Such elemental partitioning, if retained down to room temperature, may be expected to promote local variations in the postweld aging response. The objectives of the present investigation were to characterize Gas Tungsten-Arc weld solidification and HAZ liquation phenomena in Beta-21S and to examine the influence of residual microsegregation in the weld zone on alpha precipitation during ...
To make the surface composites with hard ceramics particles is an effective means for satisfying the request for the wear-resistance of the casting products. Covering casting is a general method for forming the composites by adding the adhesive into ceramics particles. However, due to the using of adhesive, pore and intermediate are easy to generate, and it is one of the reasons making the wear-resistance unstable. In the present study, it is attempted to form the wear-resistant composite layer by dispersing cast tungsten carbide (CTC) particles on the surface of wear-resistant 7 mass% Mn steel without using adhesives. Subsequently, the experiments on the wear-resistance of the obtained surface composites under several wear conditions are carried out. It is revealed by the results thereof that 7 mass% Mn steel surface composites with CTC particles have the wear-resistance which is even more excellent than those of white cast iron and cast chromium cast iron. It is also found that the ...
In this study, the effects of 325nm wavelength ultraviolet light irradiation on pitting corrosion behavior of type 340 stainless steel in a neutral chloride solution are studied. Further, the change of passive film with the light irradiation is analyzed using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The mains results obtained therefrom are stated below. Pitting potential can be shifted in noble direction by the ultraviolet light irradiation. The effect of ultraviolet light irradiation is ore prominent in the pitting corrosion process than that in the passive film formation. The result of the analysis in terms of the birth and death stochastic probability process shows that pitting corrosion rate is decreased remarkably by the ultraviolet light irradiation at the formation of passive film, while the repassivation is slightly expedited by the ultraviolet light irradiation. On the other hand, the repassivation rate is increased a little by the ultraviolet light irradiation during the pitting ...
Dominating factors in plasma nitriding and plasma condition that makes nitriding possible in plasma nitriding process of metals having hard oxide film were studied. In case of stainless steel, oxide film sputtering was easier comparing to nitriding layer. Three phenomena such as sputtering of oxide layer, formation of nitriding layer and sputtering of nitriding layer occurred simultaneously. Nitriding was achieved when the formation of nitriding layer reached the peak comparing to the removal of nitriding layer after the removal of oxide layer. Situations of metallic surface of stainless steel in surface nitriding were divided into four categories and they were, situation where oxide layer remained as it is, situation where nitriding layer was formed although oxide layer remained in some part, situation where only nitriding layer was formed and situation where sputtering was carried out. It was revealed that plasma situation causing nitriding was the cathode fall voltage appropriated ...
As for surface treatment of steel, the ion nitriding method has a lot of advantages and is practically used, while the plasma nitriding is known as a method which is faster in nitriding than the ion nitriding method. However, there are few reports and many unclear points on the plasma nitriding method. In this study, the plasma nitriding of pure iron and SUS304 is conducted using r.f. nitrogen plasma glow discharge to examine composition of the nitrided layers, microstructures, nitriding rate, etc. Moreover, by exposing the specimen once nitrided to H2 plasma, a phenomenon that nitrogen comes out of the specimen surface is examined. It is found from the result that the nitrided layer is divided into a compound layer and a diffusion layer in order from the surface, that in case of pure iron, the compound layer grows predominantly at a low temperature, and the diffusion layer grows predominantly at a high temperature, that in case of SUS304, both layers grow rapidly as a temperature ...
Stable and accurate numerical analytical method even at high Rayleigh numbers is desired, and in addition flexibility and economical efficiency are very important for numerical analysis. Unsteady flows of natural convention in a square cavity are investigated using the GSMAC (generalized and simplified marker and cell) finite-element method at high Rayleigh numbers from 10 {sup 6} to 10 {sup 8}. Validities of the multi-pass algorithm and BTD (balancing tensor diffusivity), which are highly accurate solutions for finite-element method, are investigated by introducing them to the GSMAC finite-element method. As the result, it was found that the multi-pass algorithm has little effect for the GSMAC finite-element method. The steady solutions at the Rayleigh numbers of 10 {sup 5} and 10 {sup 7} agreed well with the bench mark solutions and numerical solutions. Complex transient phenomena at Rayleigh numbers higher than 10 {sup 7} are successfully observed. 12 refs., 11 figs., 4 tabs.
In view of the situation that aging of boiler components proceeds and some `Type IV` cracking incidents are reported recently, the development of an accurate remaining life evaluation method for boiler weldment parts is an important subject for the utilities. In this study, simulated materials with coarse and fine grain microstructures in a weldment heat affected zone were produced, and their high temperature strength properties were evaluated. The strength property of the weld joint was also discussed based on the experimental and analytical results. It was found that the creep rupture strength of the fine grain material was as low as 1/2 of the base metal and as 1/5 of the coarse grain material, and the weld joint ruptured at the fine grain region in a shorter period than the base metal as the applied stress level decreased. Many grainboundary creep cavities were also observed in the fine grain region. A creep deformation analysis by FEM indicated that the creep strain accumulation ...
Described herein are effects of nitrogen dissolved in steel on passivity and pitting corrosion, as one of the major corrosion phenomena observed in stainless steel. Mechanisms involved in controlling pitting corrosion by nitrogen are also discussed. Nitrogen contained in austenic stainless steel is concentrated in the surface area, in particular in the vicinity of the interface between the passive film and metal matrix. Nitrogen tends to decrease critical current density in an acid, when it is added to steel of high critical current density (approximately 1mA/cm{sup 2} or higher). This phenomenon is considered to result from accumulation of nitrogen preferentially in the surface area to prevent dissolution of steel. Nitrogen dissolved in the austenic phase improves resistance of the steel to pitting corrosion. This phenomenon is considered to result from controlled decrease in pH level during the initial stage of pitting corrosion, characterized by evolution of micropits, to help ...
Anode polarization measurement is performed in mixed solution of NaCl and NaF using SUS 304 steel to investigate whether F[sup -] promotes or inhibits pitting corrosion. Pitting corrosion does not occur in the solution of NaF only, but passive state is broken above a certain critical potential, resulting in overall dissolution. When anode polarization measurement is made in a solution of fixed concentration NaCl added with NaF, pitting corrosion is inhibited at a certain critical concentration. F[sup -] has no effect on corrosion potential in the solution up to this critical concentration. Overall dissolution occurs in the solution with higher concentration than the critical concentration, the current value at that time agrees with that in the solution of NaF alone, and no effect of Cl[sup -] is shown. The concentration range where pitting corrosion occurs and that where overall dissolution occurs are divided by a straight line when they are expressed by logarithm of NaCl and NaF ...
Experimental discussions were given on effect of V and W addition on the high temperature strength properties of 12% Cr-15% Mn austenite steels. The test samples were added with W at 0% to 3.5% and V at 0% to 0.5% in addition to C and N, and were given aging treatment or solution treatment. This paper describes the following matters on the results of high-temperature strength measurements and structural observation: A remarkable trend was observed that M23 Cb type carbides precipitate in the aging treatment, wherein aging hardening appears prominently which is attributable to ultra-fine deposits of vanadium nitride (VN) in the V-added material; the V addition is very effective in increasing the high-temperature tensile strength and creep fracture strength as compared with single W addition, wherein the said carbides that accelerate the precipitation as a result of the V addition make a large contribution, in addition to that by ultra-fine VN deposits; and the maximum internal stress in ...
An analysis was made on corrosion suppression mechanism of glycoletherdiaminetetraacetic acid (GEDTA) film made from GEDTA on stainless steel, and its corrosion inhibition effect. Results of analysis using IR spectrum, IR-ATR spectrum, {sup 1} HNMR spectrum, and ESCA spectrum indicated the deposition of the GEDTA film is a chemical deposition. In polarization tests at pH = 5 and 7, both polarization curves shifted to the constant current density side, showing suppression effect in reactions at both pH. When the corrosion environment is made severer, such as to pH = 2 and 4, the corrosion suppression effect of GEDTA became more distinctive. A ferroxyl test identified very little difference between untreated and treated materials. In a chemical pitting test, because oxidant and corrosive anion coexist in the test solution, and GEDTA is stable against corrosive anion Cl {sup {minus}}, the film is unstable against the oxidant. 39 refs., 12 figs., 6 tabs.
Inert gas contamination, structure and mechanical properties of consolidated high-Ni alloy powder material were studied to improve its characteristics. In experiment, the chemical composition and fraction of porosity in cross sections of Alloy 625 powder were examined which was produced by Ar gas atomization method impinging supplemental gas jet onto accumulated alloy powder in the bottom of a tank for rapid cooling. The structure and mechanical properties of the alloy rod were also examined which was produced by hot hydrostatic pressing or hot extrusion of the powder filled into a capsule. As a result, although Ar content included in the powder produced by Ar gas atomization method decreased with reduction in grain size, the fine powder less than 22{mu}m still included Ar of nearly 0.5mass-ppm. Obvious correlation was found between the fraction of porosity in powder cross sections and Ar in the powder. Although cavities were detected in the consolidated powder material produced by hot ...
Simultaneous reduction of NO{sub x} and particulate emissions in a direct-injection diesel engine has been realized experimentally with a high squish combustion chamber. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of high squish combustion chamber on combustion process in detail. Engine CFD code FREC was used for the analysis. The results show the followings. (1) Compared with standard toroidal chamber, high squish chamber generates high turbulence due to strong squish and large expansion flow is caused in the cavity. (2) Rich and high-turbulence combustion, which forms ring area in the cavity under squish lip, continues during the combustion. (3) The high squish combustion chamber keeps fuel long in the cavity and less hid spreads out to the cold clearance volume. (4) For the condition of retarded injection timing, the effect of high squish is mainly observed at initial combustion and high swirl is more effective at diffusion combustion. (author)
BackgroundBiodiesel or ethanol derived from lipids or starch produced by microalgae may overcome many of the sustainability challenges previously ascribed to petroleum-based fuels and first generation plant-based biofuels. The paucity of microalgae genome sequences, however, limits gene-based biofuel feedstock optimization studies. Here we describe the sequencing and de novo transcriptome assembly for the non-model microalgae species, Dunaliella tertiolecta, and identify pathways and genes of importance related to biofuel production.ResultsNext generation DNA pyrosequencing technology applied to D. tertiolecta transcripts produced 1,363,336 high quality reads with an average length of 400 bases. Following quality and size trimming, ~ 45% of the high quality reads were assembled into 33,307 isotigs with a 31-fold coverage and 376,482 singletons. Assembled sequences and singletons were subjected to BLAST similarity searches and annotated with Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of ...
The paper describes a lithium battery researched on under the Moonlight Project which is a long life secondary battery with high energy density and high power density. Using as a base a Li4SiO4 system which exhibits stable and high Li[sup +] conductivity as solid electrolyte material, partial Si[sup 4+] is replaced with divalent ions such as B[sup 3+] and Al[sup 3+] or divalent ions such as Ni[sup 2+] and Co[sup 2+], by which Li[sup +] for electric charge compensation can be increased and conductivity is enhanced. As to a LiTi2P3O12 system, Ti[sup 4+] is replaced with Sc[sup 3+] and Y[sup 3+]. In both systems, by replaCing Si[sup 4+] or Ti[sup 4+] with trivalent metal ions and increasing mobile Li[sup +], those with ion conductivity exceeding that at 300[degree]C, 10[sup -3]Scm[sup -1], can be developed. TiS2 and NiPS3 are prepared as cathode material and miniature cells are trially fabricated. Various polarization phenomena are observed and a lot of improvements are needed, but for ...
In order to discuss effectiveness of physical exploration in the Sakonishi prospect in the Hida area, physical exploration was carried out by utilizing bored wells. This area contains the Kamioka mine, one of the major base metal mines in Japan, where electrical exploration has been attempted several times in the past. No effective results have been obtained, however, because specific resistance contrast between mine beds and base rocks is too small, and the topography is too steep making site workability inferior. As part of the investigations on geological structures over wide areas, electrical logging (specific resistance and natural potential) was performed in fiscal 1995 and 1996 by utilizing the boreholes. Induced polarization logging was also conducted on the same boreholes. A traverse line on the ground with a length of 600 m and boreholes were used to execute specific resistance tomography. Clear extraction was possible on a fault structure which is thought related with ...
