Progress in the construction of Candu reactors at home and abroad is surveyed. Some A.E.C.L. research projects are also mentioned. During 1979, Candu reactors again showed their superior capacity factors, four of them being among the ten most reliable reactors in the world. Progress in construction at Pickering B, Bruce B, Point Lepreau, Gentilly-2, Darlington, Wolsung (Korea), Cordoba (Argentina), and Cernavoda (Romania) is recounted. In 1979, it was unfortunately necessary to replace installed steam generators at Pickering B, Bruce B, Point Lepreau and Gentilly-2. At Wolsung, the reactor was pre-assembled before installation, which is a new technique. (N.D.H.).

Eliminating incrusted solids in drinking water conduits in Cantillana, Seville, Spain; Eliminacion de los solidos incrustados en las conducciones de agua potable de Cantillana (Sevilla)

The presence of iron and manganese in underground water due to rock leaching may cause problems in drinking water. the oxidation of these metals produces precipitates which alter water quality (by making it cloudy and bad testing) and may even block supply pipes. This article presents a way eliminating this problem which was tried out in the conduits of Cantillana, a municipality in the province of Seville, Spain. Cleaning the pipes with a mixture of H{sub 2}O{sub 2} + water changes the characteristics of the deposits from flocculant and absorbent to sandy following which they are washed away by the pressure of the water. Once the pipes have been cleaned, a minimal amount of maintenance will prevent the formation of new deposits. This article thus a relatively simple and economical solution for recovering water quality as an alternative to the complicated replacement of the whole network. (Author) 7 refs.

One of the most important and active pioneers of the space activities in Argentina was Miguel Sanchez Pena, an aeronautical engineer and an officer of the Argentine Air Force. Sanchez Pena was the organizer of Argentina's governmental space program in the 1970s and part of the 80s, and contributed immeasurably to the Nation's sounding rocket program. Born in Mendoza, Argentina in 1925, Sanchez Pena attended the Military Aviation School (Escuela de Aviacion Militar) in Cordoba, and later the Air Force Engineering School. Graduated as an engineer in 1959 he was sent to the University of Michigan in the United States to complete his graduate studies earning a Masters of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering. Argentinian doctors accused of spreading AIDS.

The provincial ministry of health has taken over a dialysis center in La Plata, Argentina, following the discovery that at least 20 of the clinic's 34 regular patients have been infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Catheters of the clinic's dialysis machines were found to be contaminated with HIV. The 5 physicians associated with the Centro Modelo de Dialisis have been discharged for negligence. 20 of the regular patients also contracted hepatitis C. Argentinian law stipulates that filters for the same patient must be changed after 4 times and prohibits the use of the same vessel to administer medication to more than 1 patient. Testimony from nurses at the La Plata clinic revealed that filters were reused for several patients and basic sanitary procedures were not followed. In 1990, 33 kidney disease patients at a dialysis center in Cordoba became infected with HIV and it was discovered that filters had been used up to 8 times for different ...
