Design improvements and operational experience of programmable digital comparator system
International Nuclear Information System (INIS)
Application of Programmable Digital Comparator System (PDCS) in NPP is to monitor large number of plant parameters and generate contact outputs for reactor trip, reactor setback, process interlocks etc. when parameters cross their operational bounds. Till NAPS these functions are achieved through individual Indicating Alarm Meters (IAM). PDCS used for the first time in KAPS replaces these IAMs. Since its inception, PDCS has undergone improvements in design, incorporates additional functionalities/enhanced features. Dedicated PDCS is provided in TAPP-3 and 4 for protection function. System re-configurability, on-line inter channel comparison of safety critical process parameters' values, Graphic User Interface etc. are other enhancements. From KAPS to TAPP-4 system has given many years of almost trouble-free operation. Commissioning of TAPP-3 system has been very smooth. Objective of the paper is to describe the advantage of the new system, its ...

The SUERC AMS laboratory after 3 years
British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)
The new SUERC AMS Laboratory was described at AMS-9. Since then there have been technological developments, added and improved analysis capability, the formation of additional complementary groups, the purchase of another instrument, and many samples measured. Be, C, Al, Cl, Ca and I-AMS are established with measured species changing weekly. Full-terminal potential running is now routine and 5MV is proving sufficient for all species. Ion detection and evaluation has also been improved by the use of even thinner detector windows as necessary and a more powerful on-line data analysis system. Routine radiocarbon measurement is to 4permil reproducibility at middling current and graphite samples of as little as 100mg C can be accommodated. Even smaller samples can be measured as CO2 using He ca...

Cast in Plastic: Semiotic Plasticity and the Pragmatic Reading of Darwin
British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)
As Darwin portended but failed to develop, and of which Gould made much, the forensic evidence of evolution points toward Punctuated Equilibrium rather than Phyletic Gradualism; however Gould?s empirical postulation has long suffered from its lack of a testable theoretical basis. This is rectified by the work of Jaroslav Flegr and the Frozen Plasticity Theory, a hypothesis with striking application within semiotic theory and hence to questions of epistemology and ontology. The consequences of applying FPT within Biosemiotics is this: when any particular sign carries a great range of interpretation (semiotic polymorphism) combined with a high degree of mutually supportive referencing (semiotic pleiotropy), that sign is less likely to exhibit plasticity?less able to find new expressions capa...

Development of sialon using Yttria and alumina as additive
International Nuclear Information System (INIS)
Full text: The production of #beta#-sialon from kaolinite and carbon has been studied using Hulu Langat Kaolin and activated carbon as raw materials. The sintered temperature is shown to play a prominent role in the process of sialon conversion. Apart from temperature, nitrogen flow rate is also affect the production of #beta#--sialon. This study was carried out on the effect of additive, Y_2O_3 and Al_2O_3 at different temperature that will be mixed and sintered. The additives are expected to affect the formation of #beta#--sialon and Y-sialon upon the synthesis. The mineral and phase development was analysed using X-Ray Diffraction technique (Rigaku Geigerflex) while its chemical compositions through X-Ray Fluorescent Spectrophotometer (Shimadzu XRF 1700) and the particle size distribution analysis through Particle Size Analyser (Horiba, CAPA 700). The observed changes in the microstructure were analysed using the Hitachi S2500 Scanning Electron Microscope. ...

Ionospheric response to the phenomena occurring below and above it: a summary
Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)
Some of well known F{sub 2} layer anomalies might have their origin in lower atmosphere and some have extra terrestrial sources. It has been suggested that the phenomena occurring below the ionosphere such as thunderstorms, lightning/sprites, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes and above the phenomena like corona mass ejection, solar flares and extra terrestrial events may produce F{sub 2} layer signatures. In the present paper we have tried to summarize the effect of some phenomena occurring below the ionosphere like thunderstorms, lightning/sprites and seismic activity and the phenomena such as solar flares which occur above the ionosphere, on the ionospheric electron and ion temperatures. The paper also discusses possibilities. The ionospheric electron and ion temperatures were measured by the RrPAa payload aboard the Iindian SRrOSS-C2 satellite. The normal day's ion and electron temperatures have been compared to the temperatures recorded during the disturbed day. The ...

Transmutation of technetium in the Petten HFR. A comparison of measurements and calculations
Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)
Within the framework of the EFTTRA cooperation between CEA, ECN, EDF, FZK, IAM and ITU, six metallic {sup 99}Tc rods have been irradiated in the Petten HFR for 193 effective full power days. During this irradiation, more than 6% of the {sup 99}Tc has been transmuted to the stable {sup 100}Ru. At ECN, one of the six rods has been examined in the hot cell laboratory. The ruthenium concentration in the rod measured by Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry reaches 6.4% at 5 mm from the bottom of the rod and 6.0% at 5 mm from the top. Also the axial and radial distributions of the ruthenium have been measured by Electron Probe Micro Analysis. The ruthenium concentrations calculated by the three-dimensional Monte Carlo code KENO reach 6.1% at 5 mm from the bottom of the rod and 5.7% at 5 mm from the top. These values are in reasonable agreement with the measured ones. However, the calculated radial distribution of the ruthenium concentration is not in agreement with the ...
