Seismic response of pile-supported structure considering nonlinearity of superstructure and pile, and liquefaction of surrounding ground; Shuhen jiban no ekijoka oyobi kui no hisenkeisei wo koryoshita kui shiji tatemono no jishin oto kaiseki

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Recent earthquake disasters have revealed the importance of countermeasures against soil Liquefaction in seismic design. In particular, the 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu earthquake caused several types of severe damages to pile foundations. This paper describes an analysis method for soil liquefaction using simple parameters such as SPT-N values and seismic response analyses for the pile-supported structure to consider soil-structure interaction effects and soil non-linearity using a modified Penzien model. It is important to find a way to determine the region of surrounding soil whose behavior is identical to that of piles. This paper adopts the thin layer element method to systematically determine the volume of the surrounding soil. The responses of pile-supported structure are similar, whether soil liquefaction and nonlinearity of pile are considered or not. However, the bending moment of pile become large as to soil liquefaction, and small as to nonlinearity of pile. (author)

Multi-wavelength observations of the young binary system Haro 6-10: The case of misaligned discs

CERN Document Server

Context. We present a multi-wavelength, high-resolution observational survey of the young binary system Haro 6-10 (GV Tau, IRAS 04263+2426), which is harbouring one of the few known infrared companions. Aims. The primary goal of this project is to determine the physical and geometrical properties of the circumstellar and circumbinary material in the Haro 6-10 system. Methods. High-resolution optical (HST/WFPC2) and near-infrared (VLT/NACO) images in different bands were analysed to investigate the large-scale structures of the material around the binary.Mid-infrared interferometry (VLTI/MIDI) and spectroscopy (TIMMI2 at the 3.6m ESO telescope) were carried out to determine the structure and optical depth of the circumstellar material around the individual components. Results. The multi-wavelength observations suggest that both components of the binary system Haro 6-10 are embedded in a common envelope. The measured ...

Chemistry of dense clumps near moving Herbig-Haro objects

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

Abstract Localized regions of enhanced emission from HCO+, NH3 and other species near Herbig-Haro objects (HHOs) have been interpreted as arising in a photochemistry stimulated by the HHO radiation on high-density quiescent clumps in molecular clouds. Static models of this process have been successful in accounting for the variety of molecular species arising ahead of the jet; however, recent observations show that the enhanced molecular emission is widespread along the jet as well as ahead. Hence, a realistic model must take into account the movement of the radiation field past the clump. It was previously unclear as to whether the short interaction time between the clump and the HHO in a moving source model would allow molecules such as HCO+ to reach high enough levels, and to survive fo...

Complexation of nitrogen and sulphur donor Schiff's base ligand to Cr(III) and Ni(II) metal ions: Synthesis, spectroscopic and antipathogenic studies

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

2,6-Diacetyl pyridine based ligand was synthesized by the reaction of 2,6-diacetyl pyridine with thiocarbohydrazide in presence of acetic acid. The coordination compounds with Cr(III) and Ni(II) metal ions having [Cr(L)X]X2 and [Ni(L)X]X compositions (where L=ligand and X=NO3^-, Cl^- and CH3COO^-) were synthesized and characterized by physicochemical and spectral studies. The studies like elemental analyses, molar conductance measurements, magnetic susceptibility measurements, IR, UV-Vis, NMR, mass and EPR reveal that the complexes are octahedral. The compounds were examined against the pathogenic fungal and bacterial strains like Alternaria brassicae, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium oxysporum, Xanthomonas compestris and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A. niger causes the diseases Apergillosis and Oto...

Application of wavelet analysis to signal processing methods for eddy-current test; ueburetto kaiseki no kadenryushinshoho heno tekiyo

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

This study deals with the application of wavelet analysis to detection and characterization of defects from eddy-current and ultrasonic testing signals of a low signal-to-noise ratio. Presented in this paper are the methods for processing eddy-current testing signals of heat exchanger tubes of a steam generator in a nuclear power plant. The results of processing eddy-current testing signals of tube test pieces with artificial flaws show that the flaw signals corrupted by noise and/or non-defect signals can be effectively detected and characterized by using the wavelet methods. Study on the time-domain electromagnetic responses; TDEM ho ni okeru denji oto ni tsuite

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

With an objective to perform three-dimensional analysis with high accuracy in using the electromagnetic exploration method, characteristics in electromagnetic response were analyzed, and conditions for acquiring necessary data were discussed. The discussion defined a parameter called `response anomaly` which uses response from media to standardize response only from substances with abnormal resistivity. The receivers were located uniformly on the same plane, and the response anomaly was derived from electromagnetic response from each of the three horizontal and vertical components at each receiving point, which was expressed as a contour map. The parameter for the abnormal body was consisted of location and resistivity contrast with media. Discussions using the contour map were given on the response when these factors for the parameter were varied. As a result, it was found that the response anomaly appears in the form that reflects the abnormal body, and the response anomaly of the ...

An alternative explanation of the COBE data

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The COBE data on cosmic background radiation (CBR) isotropy and spectrum are generally considered to be explicable only in the context of the Big Bang theory and to be confirmation of that theory. However, this data can also be explained by an alternative, non-Big Bang model which hypothesizes an intergalactic radio-absorbing and scattering medium. Dense, force-free magnetic filaments generated by quasars, active galactic nuclei and Herbig-Haro objects can remain stable in the intergalactic medium for many Gy. They will be opaque to radiation with wavelengths longer than 100--400 microns, and essentially transparent to shorter wavelengths. They are thus capable of thermalizing and isotropizing the cosmic background radiation, and of accounting for the observed decrease of radio luminosity of galaxies within increasing distance from earth. A simple, inhomogeneous model of such an absorbing medium can reproduce both the isotropy and spectrum of the CBR within the ...

Usumaku taiyo denchi jitsuyoka no tame no kaiseki hyoka (gokinkei amorphous zairyo pin kakuso kaimen ni okeru yugami fujunbutsu nado no eikyo)

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Described herein are the results of the FY1994 research program for analysis and evaluation for thin film solar cells. The study on quantitative analysis of hydrogen atoms in a plasma determines quantity of hydrogen atoms in the plasma of monosilane diluted with hydrogen. It is found, contrary to expectation, that quantity of hydrogen atoms in the plasma decreases as it is more diluted with hydrogen. The study on light-induced degradation of the thin chlorine-base amorphous silicon films confirms that the plasma CVD method with 20% of dichlorosilane gas added to monosilane gas produces the thin amorphous silicon film 3 times faster than the conventional method. The thin film has essentially the same defect density as the one prepared by the conventional method, showing good photoelectric characteristics. The thin film of chlorinated amorphous silicon has a 1 digit lower defect density than the conventional one of amorphous silicon, as revealed by the accelerated degradation test with ...

APERTURE SYNTHESIS IMAGING OF V892 Tau AND PV Cep: DISK EVOLUTION

International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

I present a study of two Herbig Ae stars that are in completely different evolutionary stages: V892 Tau and PV Cep. Using sub-arcsecond interferometric observations obtained with the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy at #lambda# = 1.3 and 2.7 mm, I have for the first time resolved their disks. I deduce that the 5 Myr old V892 Tau has a low dust opacity index #beta# = 1.1 and a disk mass of #approx#0.03 M_s_u_n. These values correspond to the growth of its dust into large, up to centimeters size, structures. In contrast, the very young (a few x10"5 yr) PV Cep has a quite high opacity index #beta# = 1.75 and a more massive disk 0.8 M_s_u_n. PV Cep has the youngest resolved disk around any Herbig Ae star. Unlike the youngest T Tauri and Class 0 stars, which contain large and processed grains, the young Herbig Ae star, PV Cep, disk contains interstellar-medium-like unprocessed dust. This suggests that PV Cep's dust evolution is slower than T Tauri stars'. I also ...

Technique of moving picture overlapping for view simulation by means of the moving picture processing; Dogazo kaiseki ni motozuku keikan simulation no tame no dogazo goseiho

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

This paper proposes a technique of moving picture overlapping for view simulation by means of the moving picture processing. The continuous pictures of actual natural view gotten from video and the pictures of building structure made by computer graphics (CG) were overlapped. The CG pictures of building structure model were made considering the camera parameters, such as position and direction of camera. In order to analyze the continuously changing camera parameters, optical flows were determined from the view video. Based on these results, the overlapping video was made, in which the building structure was incorporated into the actual view. Furthermore, the proposed technique of moving picture overlapping was applied to the view simulation of transmission line tower. Consequently, it was demonstrated that the overlapped moving pictures can provide information which can not be obtained from the still pictures. It was experimentally confirmed that the present technique is useful to ...

Stability analysis of forced-flow cooled superconducting coil; Numerical simulation on multiple stability. Kyosei reikyaku gata chodendo coil no anteisei kaiseki; Taju anteisei no simulation

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The stability of a forced-flow cooled superconducting coil is investigated by use of the numerical simulation. The numerical code to integrate the simultaneous partial differential system composed of the 1 D hydrodynamic equations and the 1 D thermal conduction equation has been developed and stability margins are evaluated as functions of coolant mass flow rate, operation current and imposed magnetic field. The results of computations show that the stability margin is multi-valued with respect to these operation parameters, as expected from the experimental results. It is also shown that the appearance of the first unstable regime is closely related to the existance of the stagnant region located at the upstream side of the heated zone and that the second stable regime appears because the heat transfer is appreciably enhanced by the induced backflow due to the thermal expansion of coolant. 13 refs., 13 figs., 1 tab.

Seismic tomography inversion in the case that sources and receivers are distributed out of a 2-D plane; Shingen jushinten ga nijigen heimennai ni nai baai no danseiha tomography kaiseki ni kansuru kosatsu

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

In the case where sources and receivers are not distributed on a 2-D plane, seismic tomography inversion was studied. In tomography experiments, the existing wells are generally used. In such case, sources and receivers are frequently not distributed on a 2-D plane. The 2.5-D analysis method including 2-D structure and 3-D ray-tracing was thus developed. This method is featured by less memory necessary for ray-tracing calculation, and the same algorithm for velocity determination as 2-D analysis method. In previous methods, since analysis is generally carried out by projecting sources and receivers on a certain assumed 2-D plane, it can derive correct results in the case of constant velocity and straight ray, however, in the other case, it derives incorrect results. Application of 3-D tomography requires a large amount of memory, and falls into poor convergence because of various parameters. The 2.5-D analysis method can avoid these demerits. This analysis method was applied to the ...

Relation between frequency of seismic wave and resolution of tomography; Danseiha tomography kaiseki ni okeru shuhasu to bunkaino no kankei

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

With regard to the elastic wave exploration, discussions have been given on the relationship between frequency and resolution in P-wave velocity tomography using the initial travel time. The discussions were carried out by using a new analysis method which incorporates the concept of Fresnel volume into tomography analysis. The following two arrangements were used in the calculation: a cross hole arrangement, in which seismic source and vibration receiving points were arranged so as to surround the three directions of a region extending 250 m in the horizontal direction and 500 m in the vertical direction, and observation is performed between two wells, and a permeation VSP arrangement in which the seismic source is installed on the ground surface and receiving points installed in wells. Restructuring was performed on the velocity structure by using a total of 819 observation travel times. This method has derived results of the restructuring according to frequencies of the seismic ...

Parameters determination of IEC-TDG by directly solving non-linear equation; Chokusetsuho ni yoru IEC-TDG hakei kaiseki

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

An IEC-TDG waveform analysis program that can accurately calculate the waveform parameters in waveforms containing much noise as well as waveforms based on the IEC 1083-2 standard was developed in the impulse voltage and current test field. In the conventional curve fitting method, it is difficult to solve the non-linear equation directly when obtaining waveform parameters from the assigned discrete data. An approximate solution method is low in precision. Therefore, the residual between the standardized data and approximate function was calculated for high-speed Fourier transformation. Unrelated components were eliminated from the calculated frequency spectrum to synthesize waveforms. An L-M method is used for analysis. The solution is first tracked by a maximum diving method. If the convergence is judged to have been largely promoted, the method is switched into a Newton method to continue the calculation. The non-linear equation in a curve fitting part can be solved at a high speed. ...

Numerical analysis of natural convection in a square cavity at high Rayleigh numbers using the GSMAC finite-element method. GSMAC yugen yosoho ni yoru ko Rayleigh su seihokei cavity nai shizen tairyu no hi teijo kaiseki

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Stable and accurate numerical analytical method even at high Rayleigh numbers is desired, and in addition flexibility and economical efficiency are very important for numerical analysis. Unsteady flows of natural convention in a square cavity are investigated using the GSMAC (generalized and simplified marker and cell) finite-element method at high Rayleigh numbers from 10 {sup 6} to 10 {sup 8}. Validities of the multi-pass algorithm and BTD (balancing tensor diffusivity), which are highly accurate solutions for finite-element method, are investigated by introducing them to the GSMAC finite-element method. As the result, it was found that the multi-pass algorithm has little effect for the GSMAC finite-element method. The steady solutions at the Rayleigh numbers of 10 {sup 5} and 10 {sup 7} agreed well with the bench mark solutions and numerical solutions. Complex transient phenomena at Rayleigh numbers higher than 10 {sup 7} are successfully observed. 12 refs., 11 figs., 4 tabs.

Fault analysis in the very shallow seismic reflection method. 2; Gokusenso hanshaho ni okeru danso kaiseki. 2

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Fault analysis is required in addition to the ordinary process of structural analysis (CDP stacking) for the examination of discontinuity in the reflection horizon in question. The fault shape restoration principle is that the reflection point of a reflection wave observed at a certain receiving point is on an ellipse with the shock point and receiving point at its focal points and that the sum of the distances between the reflection point and the focal points is equal to the reflection wave propagation time. The DMO velocity is worked out by calculation using the positive travel time and inverse travel time from the common reflection surface. When the reflection surface is inclined by {theta}, the average interval velocity/cos{theta} is called the DMO velocity. When the reflection surface inclination and the average interval velocities are determined separately in this way, the position of the reflection point may be worked out, and this enables the calculation of the amount of ...

Elasto-plastic analysis of settlement of pile foundations. Part 2. ; Prediction of immediate settlement of building. Kui kiso no dansosei chinka kaiseki. 2. ; Kenchikubutsu no sokuji chinka yosoku hoho

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

When the foundations of the building are designed and worked, the prediction calculation of immediate settlement of the building exercised practically is to calculate assuming the earth is a linear elastic body, but the actual stress-strain relationship of the earth is nonlinear and rigidity of the earth becomes lower as strain (or stress) increases. Hence in order to grasp the actual settling behavior of the earth, it is necessary to elucidate the nonlinear relationship between stress and strain. In this article, a prediction method of building settlement is introduced which uses an analytical technique of the multi-layered earth by the linear elasticity theory and takes into consideration strain dependency of rigidity of the earth. Part of the conclusion is as follows which has been obtained by studying the settling behaviors observed in examples of vertical loading tests of the pile foundations and the elasto-plastic settlement analytical method of the pile foundations; the settling ...

Consolidation settlement analysis of pile foundations; Kui kiso no atsumitsu chinka kaiseki

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Deformation of the ground can be considered as a sum of volume deformation and shear deformation. At circumferential ground of pile axis, simple shear type of shear deformation becomes main factor of settlement. As shear forces with reverse direction are overlapped at parallel face for pile around face of the ground between the piles, the shear deformation is relaxed. At deeper place from top of the pile, volume deformation becomes larger and component of shear deformation approaches to a pure shear type. In case of the land surface loading type consolidation settlement calculation, a method adopting one dimensional consolidation calculating method using only vertical component within stress obtained by elasticity theory even when investigating multi dimensionally is used widely. In Japanese design standards, the method calculating the consolidation settlement by presuming imaginary loading face for land surface is widely adopted. In case of abrasion pile, the imaginary loading face is ...

Analysis of the relationship between the coal properties and their liquefaction characteristics by using the coal data base; Tanshu data base ni yoru tanshitsu to ekika tokusei no kaiseki

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

The relationship between coal properties and liquefaction or gasification characteristics was analyzed by using the analysis and test results and liquefaction characteristics in the coal data base. On liquefaction reaction, the close relation between an oil yield and coal constituent composition or a coal rank is well-known. Various multivariable regression analyses were conducted by using 6 factors as variables such as calorific value, volatile component, O/C and H/C atomic ratios, exinite+vitrinite content and vitrinite reflectance, and liquefaction characteristics as variate. On liquefaction characteristics, the oil yield of dehydrated and deashed coals, asphaltene yield, hydrogen consumption, produced water and gas quantities, and oil+asphaltene yield were predicted. The theoretical gasification efficiency of each specimen was calculated to evaluate the liquefaction reaction obtained. As a result, the oil yield increased with H/C atomic ratio, while the theoretical gasification ...

Analysis of high turbulence combustion in a direct-injection diesel engine with high squish combustion chamber; CFD ni yoru ko squish nenshoshitsunai koranryu diesel nensho no kaiseki

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Simultaneous reduction of NO{sub x} and particulate emissions in a direct-injection diesel engine has been realized experimentally with a high squish combustion chamber. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of high squish combustion chamber on combustion process in detail. Engine CFD code FREC was used for the analysis. The results show the followings. (1) Compared with standard toroidal chamber, high squish chamber generates high turbulence due to strong squish and large expansion flow is caused in the cavity. (2) Rich and high-turbulence combustion, which forms ring area in the cavity under squish lip, continues during the combustion. (3) The high squish combustion chamber keeps fuel long in the cavity and less hid spreads out to the cold clearance volume. (4) For the condition of retarded injection timing, the effect of high squish is mainly observed at initial combustion and high swirl is more effective at diffusion combustion. (author)

Theoretical study on composition of gas produced by coal gasification; Sekitan gas ka de seiseisuru gas no sosei ni kansuru kosatsu (HYCOL data no doteki kaiseki)

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

In relation to considerations on composition of gas produced by coal gasification, the HYCOL hydrogen generation process data were analyzed. From the fact that CO concentration (Y) decreases linearly with CO2 concentration (X), element balance of gasification of reacted coal was used to introduce a reaction analysis equation. The equation includes a term of oxygen excess {Delta}(amount of oxygen consumed for combustion of CO and H2 in excess of the theoretical amount), derived by subtracting the stoichiometric oxygen amount used to gasify coal into CO and H2 from the consumed oxygen amount. The {Delta} can be used as a reference to oxygen utilization efficiency. An equation for the {Delta} was introduced. Also introduced was a term for steam decomposition amount derived by subtracting the generated steam from the supplied steam. These terms may be used as a clue to permeate into the gasifying reaction process. This suggestion was discussed by applying the terms to gas composition value ...

Sorption mechanism of solvent vapors to coals; Sekitan eno yobai joki no shuchaku kiko no kaiseki

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

With an objective to clarify the interactions between micropore structure of coal and solvent reagents, a sorption experiment was carried out under solvent saturated vapor pressure. Low-volatile bituminous coal, Pocahontas No. 3 coal, has the aromatic ring structure developed, and makes solvent more difficult to diffuse into coal, hence sorption amount is small. Methanol has permeated since its polarity is high. High-volatile bituminous coal, Illinois No. 6 coal, makes solvent penetrate easily, and the sorption amount was large with both of aromatic and polar solvents. Since brown coal, Beulah Zap coal, contains a large amount of oxygen, and hydrogen bonding is predominant, sorption amount of cyclohexane and benzene having no polarity is small. Methanol diffuses while releasing hydrogen bond due to its polarity, and its sorption amount is large. A double sorption model is available, which expresses the whole sorption amount as a sum of physical sorption amount and amount of permeation ...

Borehole geophysics for delineating the geological structure in the Sakonishi prospect, the Hida area, Japan; Hida chiiki Sako nishi chiku ni okeru boring ko riyo butsuri tansa ni yoru chishitsu kozo kaiseki

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

In order to discuss effectiveness of physical exploration in the Sakonishi prospect in the Hida area, physical exploration was carried out by utilizing bored wells. This area contains the Kamioka mine, one of the major base metal mines in Japan, where electrical exploration has been attempted several times in the past. No effective results have been obtained, however, because specific resistance contrast between mine beds and base rocks is too small, and the topography is too steep making site workability inferior. As part of the investigations on geological structures over wide areas, electrical logging (specific resistance and natural potential) was performed in fiscal 1995 and 1996 by utilizing the boreholes. Induced polarization logging was also conducted on the same boreholes. A traverse line on the ground with a length of 600 m and boreholes were used to execute specific resistance tomography. Clear extraction was possible on a fault structure which is thought related with ...
