Electrodeposition and characterization of Ni-Co/SiC nanocomposite coatings

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

Ni-Co/SiC nanocomposite coatings were electrodeposited in a modified watt type of Ni-Co bath containing 20nm SiC particles to be codeposited. Potentiodynamic polarization tests were conducted to study the effect of the SiC particulates on the electrodeposition of Ni and Co. Scanning electron microscopy was used to assess the morphology of the Ni-Co alloy and Ni-Co/SiC nanocomposite coatings. The distribution of the particulates in the matrix was considered by means of transmission electron microscopy. Applying nanomechanical testing instruments coupled to atomic force microscopy, mechanical properties of the alloy and composite coatings were studied and compared. The presence of 11vol.% SiC in the Ni-Co matrix increased hardness more than 60%. The average depth of scratch in the mentioned ...

Ontology and law in the early Poulantzas

British Library Electronic Table of Contents (United Kingdom)

This article reviews the little examined early work of the Greek Marxist and state theorist, Nicos Poulantzas (1936-1979). In his first book, Nature du choses et droit of 1965, the young scholar developed a sociology of law culled from the insights of philosophical ontology. The article sets out the central claims of that book and reflects on its place in Poulantzass intellectual development. Drawing on Heidegger, Sartre and Marx, Poulantzas proposed a species of Natural Law theory that unified `facts' and `values' by grounding legal concepts in a theory of social praxis centred on material labour. Legal categories were thus irreducible to ahistorical essences but were, rather, expressions of mankinds struggle to realize its intrinsic freedom. As we shall see, although flawed and in key re...

Propane oxydehydrogenation over molybdate-based catalysts

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Single and binary metal molybdates, supported on silica (80 wt% active phase/20 wt% SiO{sub 2}), having the formula AMoO{sub 4}, where A = Ni, Co, Mg, Mn, and/or Zn, and some ternary molybdates having the formula Ni{sub 0.45}Co{sub 0.45}X{sub 0.066}MoO{sub 4}, where X = P, Bi, Fe, Cr, V, and Ce, were investigated for the oxydehydrogenation of propane to propylene. The reaction is catalytic and is first order in propane disappearance, consistent with the abstraction of a methylene hydrogen being the rate limiting step. Propane conversion and yields of propylene produced vary greatly with the choice of the A metal of the molybdate and the surface area of the catalyst. At 560{degrees}C and atmospheric pressure, the highest propane conversion and highest propylene yields are obtained with NiMoO{sub 4}/SiO{sub 2} (16% at 27% conversion), closely followed by Ni{sub 0.5}Co{sub 0.5}MoO{sub 4}/SiO{sub 2}. The molybdenum content of the compositions greatly influences the catalytic activity and ...
