  2. Active Radiation Level Measurement on New Laboratory Instrument for Evaluating the Antibacterial Activity of Radioisotope

    A disc method has been widely used to measure the antibacterial effect of chemical agents. However, it is difficult to measure the antibacterial effect of radioisotopes using a disc method. A disc method is a method for diffusing a drug by placing the drug containing disc on the medium. In this method, radioisotopes are diffused on the medium and it is difficult to measure the exact effect by radiation. Thus, new laboratory equipment needs to evaluate the antibacterial activity by the radioisotopes. In this study, we measured the radiation level of radioisotopes on a new laboratory instrument using a MCNP. A disc method has been widely used to measure the antibacterial effect of chemical agents. This method uses a drug diffusion system for the measurement of anti-bacterial antibiotics. To measure the antimicrobial activity of a radioisotope, a new type of laboratory instrument is necessary to prevent the drug from spreading. The radioisotopes are used to diagnose and treat cancer. However, studies for anti-biotical use have not progressed. The radiation of radioisotopes has the effect of killing bacteria. Before this study proceeds further, it is necessary to be able to measure the antimicrobial activity of the radioisotope easily in the laboratory. However, in this study, it was possible to measure the antimicrobial activity of the radioisotope in the laboratory using a new laboratory instrument. We intend to start evaluation studies of the antibacterial activity of specific radioisotopes. In addition, it will be possible to develop research to overcome diseases caused by bacteria in the future.

  3. Millimeter-Wave Measurements of High Level and Low Level Activity Glass Melts

    The primary objectives of the current research is to develop on-line sensors for characterizing molten glass in high-level and low-activity waste glass melters using millimeter-wave (MMW) technology and to use this technology to do novel research of melt dynamics. Existing and planned waste glass melters lack sophisticated diagnostics due to the hot, corrosive, and radioactive melter environments. Without process control diagnostics, the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) and the Waste Treatment Plant (WTP) under construction at Hanford operate by a feed forward process control scheme that relies on predictive models with large uncertainties. This scheme severely limits production throughput and waste loading. Also operations at DWPF have shown susceptibility to anomalies such as pouring, foaming, and combustion gas build up, which can seriously disrupt operations. Future waste chemistries will be even more challenging. The scientific goals of this project are to develop new reliable on-line monitoring capability for important glass process parameters such as temperature profiles, emissivity, density, viscosity, and other characteristics using the unique advantages of millimeter wave electromagnetic radiation that can be eventually implemented in the operating melters. Once successfully developed and implemented, significant cost savings would be realized in melter operations by increasing production through put, reduced storage volumes (through higher waste loading), and reduced risks (prevention or mitigation of anomalies)

This facility is dedicated to the specific activity measurements of solid and radioactive samples using Gamma and X-ray spectrometry. MADERE is a high-performance facility devoted to neutron dosimetry for experimental programs performed in CEA and for the irradiation surveillance programmes of PWR vessels. The MADERE platform is engaged in a continuous improvement process. Recently, two High Efficiency diodes have been integrated to the MADERE platform in order to manage the accurate low level activity measurements (few Bq per sample. This new equipment provides a good level of efficiency over the energy range from 60 keV to 2 MeV. The background continuum is reduced due to the use of a Ultra Low Background (ULB lead shielding. Relative and absolute X-ray measurement techniques have been improved in order to facilitate absolute rhodium activity measurement (Rh103m on solid samples. Additional efforts have been made to increase the accuracy of the relative niobium (Nb93m activity measurement technique. The way of setting up an absolute measurement method for niobium is under investigation. After a presentation of the MADERE's measurement devices, this paper focuses on the technological options taken into account for the design of high efficiency measurement devices. Then, studies performed on X-ray measurement techniques are presented. Some details about the calculation of uncertainties and correction factors are also mentioned.   7. Low-level beta activity measurements by simultaneous anticoincidence and difference counting

    The variable background is an important disturbing factor for low-level activity measurements by beta counting. In order to overcome this difficulty in a simple manner, a software-aided technique of simultaneous beta counting in anticoincidence and difference has been established. The technique is based on a programmable multichannel scaler provided with appropriate software for data analysis. Using a counting system containing a sandwich of two large area GM detectors, a Tl-204 source having the emission rate of 30.5 s-1 has been measured. A gamma background was simulated by two point gamma sources (Cs-37, Co-60). An exposure rate of 2.58x10 Ci/Kg · s (50 times higher than the natural background) was obtained at the detector walls with the sources unshielded. The variation of the gamma background was produced by shielding intermittently both sources. The counting time was 1000 s. The experimental results showed that the emission rate was accurately measured (a relative standard uncertainty of 10 was obtained) although the measurement was strongly disturbed by the variation of the gamma background. In conclusion, a software-aided counting technique has been developed for activity measurements in varying backgrounds. For routine radioactivity measurements it has the advantage of evidencing random variations of the background and seems suitable for emergency radioactivity measurements. (authors)

    The purpose of this sampling activity is to obtain data to support an initial evaluation of potential hazards due to the presence of combustible gas in catch tanks that are currently operated by the River Protection Project (RPP). Results of the hazard analysis will be used to support closure of the flammable gas unreviewed safety question for these facilities. The data collection will be conducted in accordance with the Tank Safety Screening Data Quality Objective (Dukelow et al. 1995). Combustible gas, ammonia, and organic vapor levels in the headspace of the catch tanks will be field-measured using hand-held instruments. If a combustible gas level measurement in a tank exceeds an established threshold, gas samples will he collected in SUMMA' canisters for more extensive laboratory analysis. In addition, ventilation rates of some catch tanks will be measured to evaluate removal of flammable gas by air flowing through the tanks.   14. Low-level beta activity measurements by simultaneous anticoincidence and difference counting

    Low-level beta activity measurements are extensively performed for environmental radioactivity surveillance and radiation protection. The measurement is affected by a large number of external influences. The varying background due to changes in natural or man-made radiation is an important disturbing factor. In order to overcome this difficulty in a simple manner the capabilities offered by the simultaneous anticoincidence and difference counting have been investigated. A comparative study of these techniques has been developed and a measuring system has been constructed. The main components of the system are: a programmable multi-scaler which can perform a wide range of operations, an anticoincidence circuit and a sandwich of two large-area G-M detectors. The multi-scaler is endowed with an appropriate software which allows all operations to be performed via keyboard in an interactive fashion. The detectors were selected in order to have the same background (∼6 cps) and the same gamma response, within 10%, in the energy range from 60 keV to 1.3 MeV. From the theoretical and experimental results the following conclusions can be drawn: anticoincidence technique gives comparable or more accurate results than difference technique when background is stable; for varying backgrounds, difference-mode counting gives much more accurate results than anticoincidence counting, provided that the difference in response between detectors and the nonuniformity of the radiation field are small. Based on these conclusions an analysis program has been developed in order to decide on the best option. In conclusion, a software-aided counting technique has been implemented for low beta activity measurements both in normal conditions and in emergency situations. (author)

  15. Measurement of PET Tracers Low Activity Levels During Plasma Samples Analysis

    Plasma metabolite analysis in the PET (Positron Emission Tomography) studies requires quantification of very low levels of radioactive materials during a rapid and sequential passage of plasma samples. Quantification is necessary for deriving a kinetic model that describes the transport and metabolism of the administered radiotracer in the body. Using kinetic models, information about a particular biological process in the human body can be determined from the concentration of the PET tracer in the blood plasma and tissues, during the PET scan. To estimate the kinetic model parameters, the amount of the parent compound in plasma at a given time point is needed. The plasma contains the original drug (parent compound) and its metabolite that was produced by enzymatic activity; therefore, metabolism of the radio-labeled tracer results in radioactive metabolites that cannot be differentiated from the parent compound, because both, the metabolite and the parent compound, carry the same radioactive isotope and emit photons with the same energy (511 keV). The total plasma radioactivity and the radiotracer decay time are known, but in order to define the kinetic model, an adjustment for the actual un metabolized (parent) radiotracer requires correction at each time point. Metabolite analysis of the radiotracer includes blood sample collection with a known time stamp, separation of the plasma by centrifugation, separation of the plasma into its compounds (parent and metabolite) by High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and analysis by a radiation detector (radio- HPLC) to determine the percentage of the unchanged drug (parent compound). The detector system records the activity levels in the HPLC output line for each compound during the plasma analysis procedure (the metabolites as well as the original un metabolized radiotracer).   16. Measurement of the carbon 14 activity at natural level in air samples

    The aim of the study was to measure the carbon 14 activity at natural level in air samples using classical methods of radiochemistry and beta counting. Three different methods have been tested in order to minimise the detection limit. In the three methods, the first step consists in trapping the atmospheric carbon 14 into NaOH (1N) using a bubbling chamber. The atmospheric carbon dioxide reacts with NaOH to form Na2CO3. In the first method the Na2CO3 solution is mixed with a liquid scintillate and is directly analysed by liquid scintillation counting (LSC). The detection limit is approximately 1 Bq/m3 of air samples. The second method consists in evaporating the carbonate solution and then counting the solid residue with a proportional gas circulation counter. The detection limit obtained is lower than the first method (0.4 Bq/m3 of air samples). In the third method, Na2CO3 is precipitated into CaCO3 in presence of CaCl2. CaCO3 is then analysed by LSC. This method appear to be the most appropriate, the detection limit is 0.05 Bq/m3 of air samples. (author)

  17. A system for measuring thermal activation energy levels in silicon by thermally stimulated capacitance

    One method being used to determine energy level(s) and electrical activity of impurities in silicon is described. The method is called capacitance transient spectroscopy (CTS). It can be classified into three basic categories: the thermally stimulated capacitance method, the voltage-stimulated capacitance method, and the light-stimulated capacitance method; the first two categories are discussed. From the total change in capacitance and the time constant of the capacitance response, emission rates, energy levels, and trap concentrations can be determined. A major advantage of using CTS is its ability to detect the presence of electrically active impurities that are invisible to other techniques, such as Zeeman effect atomic absorption, and the ability to detect more than one electrically active impurity in a sample. Examples of detection of majority and minority carrier traps from gold donor and acceptor centers in silicon using the capacitance transient spectrometer are given to illustrate the method and its sensitivity.

    Full Text Available Introduction: obesity and cardiovascular disease (CVD are increasing in the world and in Argentina too. Lifestyles, especially diet and physical activity (PA, are presented as key in preventing these diseases. The aim of the study was to assess anthropometric measurements, dietary intake and physical activity level in medical students, and evaluate the possible association between these variables.Material and methods: a cross-sectional study was performed in 141 students from the last three years of the career (21-31 years old. Body Mass Index (BMI, % Body Fat (%BF and Waist Circumference (WC were assessed and subjects were classified according to their cardiovascular risk (CVR from the WC. Dietary intake was assessed by a 24-hours register, a food frequency questionnaire and the pattern of consumption was compared with the Food Guide for Argentinean population. “Argenfoods” Table of Food Composition was used for nutritional assessment and compared with WHO goals for the Prevention of Non-communicable Chronic Diseases. Diet was evaluated by the International Dietary Quality Index (DQI-I and the compliance of the WHO goals for the Prevention of Non-communicable Chronic Diseases. Exercise was assessed by International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ. The possible association between different anthropometric variables, anthropometry and intake, and anthropometry and physical activity was assessed.Results: 3.5% of the students were obese (31.7 ± 0.7 kg/m2 and 25.5% were overweight (26.8 ± 1.6 kg/m2, 27.7% showed increased BF (women: 36.8 ± 3.4 %; men: 29.1 ± 3.4 % and 14.9% had limit BF (women: 31.7 ± 0,7%, men: 23.6 ± 3.4%, 23.4% had CVR per WC (women: 85.8 ± 5.6 cm; men: 101.4 ± 2.3 cm. 27.8% of normal weight individuals (women showed increased and limit BF (35.0 ± 0.9 %.   1. MARVEL: Measured active rotational-vibrational energy levels. II. Algorithmic improvements

    When determining energy levels from several, in cases many, measured and assigned high-resolution molecular spectra according to the Ritz principle, it is advantageous to investigate the spectra via the concept of spectroscopic networks (SNs). Experimental SNs are finite, weighted, undirected, multiedge, rooted graphs, whereby the vertices are the energy levels, the edges are the transitions, and the weights are provided by transition intensities. A considerable practical problem arises from the fact that SNs can be very large for isotopologues of molecules widely studied; for example, the experimental dataset for the H216O molecule contains some 160,000 measured transitions and 20,000 energy levels. In order to treat such large SNs and extract the maximum amount of information from them, sophisticated algorithms are needed when inverting the transition data. To achieve numerical effectiveness, we found the following efficient algorithms applicable to very large SNs: reading the input data employs hash codes, building the components of the SN utilizes a recursive depth-first search algorithm, solving the linear least-squares problem is via the conjugate gradient method, and determination of the uncertainties of the energy levels takes advantage of the robust reweighting algorithm.

    Full Text Available Purpose: to assess and compare secondary school students’ physical activity levels during recess and regular class periods using objective measurement. Material: The study sample consisted of 26 9th grade school students (M = 15.28 years, SD = 0.47 of a German secondary school. They wore the Actiheart the whole school day for one week. All students followed the same school schedule and participated in the same classes. 9th grade school students’ physical activity levels during recess and regular class periods were assessed using the physical activity monitoring device Actiheart, which validly and objectively measures physical activity. Results: total recess time physical activity levels accounted for M = 2.38 METs, whereas total class period time physical activity levels only reached M = 1.58 METs. This difference could be proven statistically significant. Conclusions: Total recess time accounts for significantly higher physical activity levels compared to total class period time and the overall time students spend in school, respectively.

  3. Provisional shielding for laboratory measurements of low level activities with semiconductor detectors

    The application of semiconductor spectrometry in low level counting requires the use of detector shielding to weaken the effect of ambient sources of ionizing radiation. The design is described of provisional shields of lead bricks for three different types of high-purity Ge detectors by Canberra. In the configuration of six polyethylene vessels around the detector with a total sample volume of 1200 ml, minimal detectable activities were determined of selected radionuclides. The experiment showed that the determination of minimal detectable activity in this configuration shows sufficient values for determining the content of natural and artificial radionuclides for monitoring samples from the environment of nuclear power plants.     Background Measuring the way people vary across time in meeting recommended levels of physical activity should be a fundamental component of public health surveillance. However, we were unaware of prospective cohort studies that had examined this in a population base using convergent measures. Purpose We examined agreement between two validated measures used to estimate periodic change in the rate of meeting U.S. Healthy People 2010 guidelines for participation in moderate or vigorous physical activity. Methods A cohort (N=497) from a random, multi-ethnic sample of adults living in Hawaii was assessed every 6-months for 2 years starting spring 2004. Latent transition analysis classified people as meeting or not meeting the guidelines. Intra-class kappa statistics and multinomial logistic regression analysis were used to evaluate agreement. Results Agreement for classifying stable classes of people who met or did not meet the guideline each time was substantial for vigorous activity (kappa ∼ .65 - .70) but fair-to-moderate for moderate activity (kappa ∼ .38 - .48). Agreement was poorer for classifying people who transitioned between meeting and not meeting the vigorous guideline (kappa ∼ .45) or the moderate guideline (kappa ∼ .21 - .29). Conclusion Rates of meeting the guidelines varied across time and were estimated differently by the two measures, especially for moderate activity. This illustrates an understudied problem for public health promotion. Accurate classification of change within people is necessary for determining exposure in outcome studies, personal determinants of sufficient activity, and for evaluating whether interventions are successful in sustaining increases in rates of meeting physical activity guidelines.   8. 'Becquerel screening' device to automatically measure activity level of contaminated soil in flexible containers

    Contaminated soil and incineration ash collected during offsite decontamination work following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station of Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. is being stored in flexible containers. These containers are managed taking their activity level into account in accordance with the Decontamination Guidelines issued by the Ministry of the Environment. Toshiba has developed the 'Becquerel Screening' device that can automatically measure the activity level of the contents of each flexible container simply by placing the container on a palette, without the need to take samples for analysis from the container. The Becquerel Screening device is expected to contribute not only to improved operational efficiency but also to reduced exposure of operators to radiation, because it eliminates the need for direct contact with contaminated soil and ash.   10. Distinguishing nitrogen fertilization levels in field corn (Zea mays L.) with actively induced fluorescence and passive reflectance measurements

    Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) is an active sensing technique capable of capturing immediate and specific indications of changes in plant physiology and metabolism as they relate to the concentration and photosynthetic activity of the plant pigments. Reflectance is a passive sensing technique that can capture differences in the concentration of the primary plant pigments. Fluorescence and reflectance were compared for their ability to measure levels of plant stress that are of agronomic importance in corn (Zea mays L.) crops. Laboratory LIF and reflectance spectra were made on excised leaves from field grown corn. Changes in the visible region of the spectrum were compared between groups of plants fertilized with seven different levels of nitrogen (N) fertilization. A pulsed nitrogen laser emitting photons at a wavelength of 337 nm was used as a fluorescence excitation source. Differences in maximum intensity of fluorescence occurred at 440 nm, 525 nm, 685 nm, and 740 nm. Significant separations were found between levels of N fertilization at several LIF wavelength ratios.     This study is concerned with the impacts of organic aerosols on cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activity based on field measurements made at a suburban site in Northern China. The sensitivity of the estimated CCN number concentration (NCCN) to both volume fraction of organic material (xorg) and aerosol oxidation level (using f44, the fraction of m/z 44 in aerosol organic material) are examined. A strong dependence of CCN number concentration (NCCN) on the xorg and f44 was noted. The sensitivity of NCCN to volume fraction of organics increased with increasing xorg. The impacts of the aerosol particles oxidization or aging level on estimating NCCN were also very significant. When the particles were mostly composed of organics (xorg > 60 %), the NCCN at the supersaturation of 0.075 and 0.13 % was underestimated by 46 and 44 %, respectively, if aerosol particles were freshly emitted with primary organics (f44 15 %). The NCCN at the supersaturation of 0.76 % was underestimated by 11 and 4 %, respectively, at f44 15 %. However, for the particles composed of low organics (e.g., xorg compounds. Our results indicated that it would decrease the uncertainties in estimating NCCN and lead to a more accurate estimation of NCCN to increase the proportion of secondary organics, especially when the composition of the aerosols is dominated by organics. The applicability of the CCN activation spectrum obtained at Xinzhou to the Xianghe site, about 400 km to the northeast of Xinzhou, was investigated, with the aim of further examining the sensitivity of NCCN to aerosol type. Overall, the mean CCN efficiency spectrum derived from Xinzhou performs well at Xianghe when the supersaturation levels are > 0.2 % (overestimation of 2-4 %). However, NCCN was overestimated by ˜ 20 % at supersaturation levels of < 0.1 %. This suggests that the overestimation is mainly due to the smaller proportion of aged and oxidized organic aerosols present at Xianghe compared to Xinzhou.

    Full Text Available Background: The level of physical fitness in south Asian immigrants living in Norway is largely unknown, but the level of physical activity seems to be low, possibly in part explaining their high prevalence of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. However, previous studies have used self-reported measures of physical activity, and it might be questioned whether the previous data reflect the true physical activity level.Aim: To describe objectively measured physical activity level, cardiorespiratory fitness and diabetes risk in a group of Pakistani immigrant men living in Oslo, Norway.Methods: One hundred and fifty Pakistani immigrant men in the age group 25-60 years were included. Physical activity level was assessed with an accelerometer. Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured until exhaustion on a treadmill, and diabetes risk was evaluated with an oral glucose tolerance test.Results: Mean age was 37.3 years (SD=7.7. Total physical activity level was 308 counts/min (SD=131, and peak oxygen uptake was 34.2 ml·kg-1·min-1 (SD=5.6. Fifty percent of the participants had the metabolic syndrome, and 76% were obese. Exercise guidelines exist for pregnancy, but recommendations for exercise after childbirth are virtually nonexistent. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of physical activity intervention based on pedometer on physical activity level and anthropometric measures of women after childbirth. Methods We conducted a randomized controlled trial in which 66 women who had given birth 6 weeks to 6 months prior were randomly assigned to receive either a 12 week tailored program encouraging increased walking using a pedometer (intervention group, n = 32 or routine postpartum care (control group, n = 34. During the 12-week study period, each woman in the intervention group wore a pedometer and recorded her daily step count. The women were advised to increase their steps by 500 per week until they achieved the first target of 5000 steps per day and then continued to increase it to minimum of 10,000 steps per day by the end of 12th week. Assessed outcomes included anthropometric measures, physical activity level, and energy expenditure per week.   16. Comparison Between Active and Passive Techniques for Radon Gas and Working Level measurements, El-Allouga Mine, Sinai, Egypt

    Two different techniques were used for measuring Rn-gas concentrations and Working Level (WL) in U-exploration galleries at El-Allouga Mine, Sinai, Egypt. The active techniques used EDA(RDA-200) with calibrated Lucas cell and Tri-Met-372 instruments and passive techniques used four different types of SSNTD. Twenty eight (28) stations inside the studied tunnels were located covering the different environmental conditions. The measurements were carried out during summer time, in the ventilated sector (16 stations), the average tunnel air temperature was 24.4 ± 2.2 degree C and relative humidity 38%. In the non-ventilated sector (12 stations), the average tunnel air temperature was 22.2±0.4 degree C and relative humidity 70%. The Rn-gas concentrations using EDA(RDA-200) and calibrated Lucas cell, in the ventilated sector averaged 11.966 p Ci/l, while in the non-ventilated stations averaged 786.21 p Ci/l. Also for the Tisvoglu method, the values of (WL) in the ventilated stations averaged 0.149, while in the non-ventilated stations averaged 6.838. For Kusentz method, the (WL) in the ventilated stations averaged 0.1163, while in the non-ventilated stations averaged 6.918. For Rolle method, in the ventilated stations the (WL) averaged 0.1318, while in the non-ventilated stations averaged 6.914.   18. Liquid helium level measurement system

    The Liquid Helium level measurement system at the PLF, Mumbai has been recently upgraded. Monitoring liquid helium levels is crucial for steady operation of superconducting Linac booster. A Superconducting wire (NbTi) based sensor (American Magnetic make) is used to measure the liquid helium level. Resistance of the sensor changes with the liquid level and the change in resistance is measured using a four wire readout. The Electronics hardware is developed around Silicon lab module C8051F020, which has a 12 bit ADC on board. The sensor is excited with 80 mA constant current and the voltage across the sensor is measured using 12 bit ADC and processed further to get resistance. The measured resistance is converted to fractional level (0 to 100 %) and can be displayed on the LCD panel of the local unit as well as on the remote PC through serial communication. Each unit is capable of reading upto four level sensors. One of the important features of this measurement system is the auto calibration with a single button for all the four level sensors. Two control stations are designed, developed and successfully installed to monitor helium levels in all eight cryostats of the Linac. (author)

    Objective We investigate differences between White and South Asian (SA) populations in levels of objectively measured and self-reported physical activity. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Leicestershire, UK, 2010–2011. Participants Baseline data were pooled from two diabetes prevention trials that recruited a total of 4282 participants from primary care with a high risk score for type 2 diabetes. For this study, 2843 White (age=64±8, female=37%) and 243 SA (age=58±9, female=34%) participants had complete physical activity data and were included in the analysis. Outcome measures Moderate-intensity to vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) and walking activity were measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and a combination of piezoelectric pedometer (NL-800) and accelerometer (Actigraph GT3X) were used to objectively measure physical activity. Results Compared to White participants, SA participants self-reported less MVPA (30 vs 51 min/day; p<0.001) and walking activity (11 vs 17 min/day; P=0.001). However, there was no difference in objectively measured ambulatory activity (5992 steps/day vs 6157 steps/day; p=0.75) or in time spent in MVPA (18.0 vs 21.5 min/day; p=0.23). Results were largely unaffected when adjusted for age, sex and social deprivation. Compared to accelerometer data, White participants overestimated their time in MVPA by 51 min/day and SA participants by 21 min/day. Conclusions SA and White groups undertook similar levels of physical activity when measured objectively despite self-reported estimates being around 40% lower in the SA group. This emphasises the limitations of comparing self-reported lifestyle measures across different populations and ethnic groups.     A level-sensing probe positioned in a tank is divided into sections with each section including (i) a fluid-level capacitive sensor disposed along the length thereof, (ii) an inductor electrically coupled to the capacitive sensor, (iii) a sensor antenna positioned for inductive coupling to the inductor, and (iv) an electrical conductor coupled to the sensor antenna. An electrically non-conductive housing accessible from a position outside of the tank houses antennas arrayed in a pattern. Each antenna is electrically coupled to the electrical conductor from a corresponding one of the sections. A magnetic field response recorder has a measurement head with transceiving antennas arrayed therein to correspond to the pattern of the housing's antennas. When a measurement is to be taken, the measurement head is mechanically coupled to the housing so that each housing antenna is substantially aligned with a specific one of the transceiving antennas.

  4. Thermal transducer for level measurement

    Certain level measurement applications in nuclear power plants require sensors which show good reliability and satisfactory accuracy under accident conditions, and whose electronics can be located remote from the sensor (e.g. outside of reactor containment). Reliability requirements exclude the use of mechanical detectors with moving parts. Diffential pressure sensors are not accurate in accident environments, and capacitive units require that detector electronics be close-coupled to the sensor. For these reasons, solid-state thermal detectors, using proven materials and technology, have been selected for severe nuclear plant applications. The electronics associated with the detector is located remote from the sensor, and digital signal processing is feasible.   5. Measurements of fluorine in contemporary urban Canadians: a comparison of the levels found in human bone using in vivo and ex vivo neutron activation analysis

    Non-invasive in vivo neutron activation analysis (NAA) was used to measure the fluorine concentration in 35 people in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Measurement and precision data of this second generation NAA system were determined in 2013, and the results were compared with the performance of a first generation system used in a pilot study of 33 participants from the Hamilton area in 2008. Improvements in precision in line with those predicted by phantom studies were observed, but the use of fewer technicians during measurement seemed adversely to affect performance. We compared the levels of fluorine observed in people between the two studies and found them to be comparable. The average fluorine concentration in bone was found to be 3  ±  0.3 mg and 3.5  ±  0.4 mg F/g Ca for 2013 and 2008 measurements respectively. Ten people were measured in both studies; the observed average change in bone fluorine in this subgroup was consistent with that predicted by the observation of the relationship between bone fluorine and age in the wider group. In addition, we observed differences in the relationship between bone fluorine level and age between men and women, which may be attributable either to sex or gender differences. The rate of increase in fluorine content for men was found to be 0.096  ±  0.022 mg F/g Ca per year while the rate of increase for women was found to be slightly less than half that of men, 0.041  ±  0.017 mg F/g Ca per year. A discontinuity in the rate of increase in fluorine content with age was observed in women at around age 50. Bone fluorine content was significantly lower (p<0.01) in women age 50 to 59 than in women age 40 to 49, which we suggest may be attributable to bone metabolism changes associated with menopause. We also observed increased fluorine levels in tea drinkers as compared to non-tea drinkers, suggesting tea may be a significant source of exposure in Canada. The rate of increase in fluorine content

    One dominant and almost inevitable natural source of airborne activity is Radon (222Rn) which is produced as a result of decay of U in the earth crust. Measurements of indoor radon are of importance because of the radiation dose to human population due to the inhalation of radon and its daughters, constitutes more than 50% of the total dose, including that from the natural sources [UNSCEAR, 1988]. The radon concentration in the environment depends upon the source term, ventilation rate and weather. India is so vast in extent and so varied geological formations that wide variations can be expected in indoor radon concentration levels. So it may be desirable to make extensive measurements of radon levels at various parts of the country. An attempt has been made to study the seasonal and geological variation of radon levels at various locations of Bhubaneshwar city using solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD). The ongoing preliminary measurements of indoor radon exposure to population were discussed. Radon passive dosimeters loaded with CR-39 films have been used in this study.     This paper describes the results of the analyses of High Level Waste (HLW) sludge slurry samples and of the calculations necessary to decay the radionuclides to meet the reporting requirement in the Waste Acceptance Product Specifications (WAPS) [1]. The concentrations of 45 radionuclides were measured. The results of these analyses provide input for radioactive decay calculations used to project the radionuclide inventory at the specified index years, 2015 and 3115. This information is necessary to complete the Production Records at Savannah River Site's Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) so that the final glass product resulting from Macrobatch 5 (MB5) can eventually be submitted to a Federal Repository. Five of the necessary input radionuclides for the decay calculations could not be measured directly due to their low concentrations and/or analytical interferences. These isotopes are Nb-93m, Pd-107, Cd-113m, Cs-135, and Cm-248. Methods for calculating these species from concentrations of appropriate other radionuclides will be discussed. Also the average age of the MB5 HLW had to be calculated from decay of Sr-90 in order to predict the initial concentration of Nb-93m. As a result of the measurements and calculations, thirty-one WAPS reportable radioactive isotopes were identified for MB5. The total activity of MB5 sludge solids will decrease from 1.6E+04 {micro}Ci (1 {micro}Ci = 3.7E+04 Bq) per gram of total solids in 2008 to 2.3E+01 {micro}Ci per gram of total solids in 3115, a decrease of approximately 700 fold. Finally, evidence will be given for the low observed concentrations of the radionuclides Tc-99, I-129, and Sm-151 in the HLW sludges. These radionuclides were reduced in the MB5 sludge slurry to a fraction of their expected production levels due to SRS processing conditions.

  10. Personal radiofrequency electromagnetic field measurements in The Netherlands: exposure level and variability for everyday activities, times of day and types of area.

    Knowledge of the exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields is necessary for epidemiological studies on possible health effects. The main goal of this study is to determine the exposure level and spatial and temporal variances during 39 everyday activities in 12 frequency bands used in mobile telecommunication and broadcasting. Therefore, 24 h measurements were gathered from 98 volunteers living in or near Amsterdam and Purmerend, The Netherlands. They carried an activity diary to be kept to the minute, a GPS logger sampling at an interval of 1 s, and an EME Spy exposimeter with a detection limit of 0.0066 mW/m(2) sampling at an interval of 10s in 12 frequency bands. The mean exposure over 24 h, excluding own mobile phone use, was 0.180 mW/m(2). During daytime exposure was about the same, but during night it was about half, and in the evening it was about twice as high. The main contribution to environmental exposure (calling by participant not included) is from calling with mobile phones (37.5%), from cordless DECT phones and their docking stations (31.7%), and from the base stations (12.7%). The exposure to mobile phone base stations increases with the percentage of urban ground use, which is an indication for high people density. In agreement, the highest mean exposure relates to the activities with high people density, such as travelling by public transport, visiting social events, pubs or shopping malls. Exposure at home depends mainly on exposure from people calling in the neighbourhood of the participant and thus on the number of persons in a household. In addition just the possession of DECT docking stations leads to exposure as most models transmit continuously in stand-by. Also wireless internet routers continuously transmit in the WiFi band. The purpose of this study was to develop a computer-aided measurement of liver volumes in hepatic CT. Methods: The authors developed a computerized liver extraction scheme based on geodesic active contour segmentation coupled with level-set contour evolution. First, an anisotropic diffusion filter was applied to portal-venous-phase CT images for noise reduction while preserving the liver structure, followed by a scale-specific gradient magnitude filter to enhance the liver boundaries. Then, a nonlinear grayscale converter enhanced the contrast of the liver parenchyma. By using the liver-parenchyma-enhanced image as a speed function, a fast-marching level-set algorithm generated an initial contour that roughly estimated the liver shape. A geodesic active contour segmentation algorithm coupled with level-set contour evolution refined the initial contour to define the liver boundaries more precisely. The liver volume was then calculated using these refined boundaries. Hepatic CT scans of 15 prospective liver donors were obtained under a liver transplant protocol with a multidetector CT system. The liver volumes extracted by the computerized scheme were compared to those traced manually by a radiologist, used as ''gold standard.''Results: The mean liver volume obtained with our scheme was 1504 cc, whereas the mean gold standard manual volume was 1457 cc, resulting in a mean absolute difference of 105 cc (7.2%).     Level measurement method of molten metal have been investigated to apply in the electromagnetic continuous casting. The level measuring principle was based on the electromagnetic induction and search coil type of magnetic sensor was chosen as a level sensor, Before construct the level meter, the artificial cold charges was used to characterize the sensor output according to the level, the coil current, and the aging. Considering the results of basic experiments, we constructed a level measurement system and applied it to electromagnetic continuous casting at a billet caster of POSCO works. The developed level meter showed that the resolution of the level was within ±0.3 mm, the dynamic range of sensing was from the top of the mold to 300 mm below the top of the mold. It worked well with the existing control device in supplying the molten steel to the mold.

    To avoid interference phenomena depending on the level, an ultrasonic level measuring sensor is proposed, which has an envelope tube around the path of the ultrasonic signal to prevent reflection. An ultrasonic transducer suspended by means of a linkage on a flange is additionally provided with a corrugated hose or a sintered metal tube around the path of the ultrasonic signal. A reference element necessary to raise the accuracy can be fitted in a cutout of the envelope tube. This device makes very precise measurement of the level possible without variations in the accuracy of measurement depending on the level, as interference due to shunt reflection is prevented.     Radon prevention, measurement and mitigation activities have been increasing in Finland during the 2000's. Nowadays, many municipal authorities, especially those located in high-radon areas, require radon prevention measures. This has activated radon measurements. Owners of new houses having radon piping installed under the floor slab are the most active group to measure and reduce the found high-radon values. Their radon awareness is apparently better than on the average, and the existing piping makes it easier and cheaper to reduce the radon levels. Local campaigns involving invitation flyers mailed to the residents have been a cost-effective means to activate measurements of older houses. So far 116 611 dwellings in low-rise residential buildings have been measured. At least 15 % of the 16 860 dwellings found to exceed the reference level of 400 Bq m-3 had their indoor radon level reduced below that. (authors)

However, few studies have measured whether these consistent differences are evident in very young animals, and whether they persist over an individual’s entire lifespan. Here we investigated the begging behaviour of very young cross-fostered zebra finch nestlings and the relationship between that and adult activity levels. We found a link between the nestling activity behaviour head movements during begging, measured at just five and seven days after hatching, and adult activity levels, measured when individuals were between three and three and a half years old. Moreover, body mass was found to be negatively correlated with both nestling and adult activity levels, suggesting that individuals which carry less body fat as adults are less active both as adults and during begging as nestlings. Our work suggests that the personality traits identified here in both very young nestlings and adults may be linked to physiological factors such as metabolism or environmental sources of variation. Moreover, our work suggests it may be possible to predict an individual’s future adult personality at a very young age, opening up new avenues for future work to explore the relationship between personality and a number of aspects of individual life history and survival.

  7. Electrical measurement of sweat activity

    A multichannel logger for long-term measurements of sweat activity is presented. The logger uses skin surface electrodes for unipolar admittance measurements in the stratum corneum. The logger is developed with emphasis on clinical use. The portability of the logger enables recording of sweat activity under circumstances such as daily errands, exercise and sleep. Measurements have been done on 24 healthy volunteers during relaxation and exercise with heart rate monitoring. Recordings of sweat activity during sleep have been done on two healthy subjects. Early results show good agreement with the literature on sweating physiology and electrodermal activity. Results are presented showing measurements related to physical exercise, dermatomes, distribution of sweat glands and sympathetic activity. This study examines the normal sweating patterns for the healthy population, and we present results with the first 24 healthy volunteers. Comparing these results with similar measurements on hyperhidrosis patients will make it possible to find the most useful parameters for diagnosis and treatment evaluation

  12. Determination of trace elements in meteorites by instrumental and radiochemical neutron activation analysis and measurement of cosmogenic radionuclides by low-level gamma spectrometry

    In ten meteorites the elements Na, Mg, Al, Cl, Sc, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Ga, As, Se, Br, Sr, Mo, Ag, Sn, Sb, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, W, Ir, Au, Th and U have been determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis. Irradiation is followed by gamma spectrometry using a 50 cc Ge(Li) detector. For improving detection limits or determination accuracy of heavy alkali metals, REE, Th and U radiochemical group separation is applied after irradiation. The samples are dissolved in a mixture of hydrofluoric and nitric acid at 440 K in an autoclave. The evaporation residue dissolved in a mixture of 0.1 M oxalic and 0.5 M hydrochloric acids is given onto an anionite KPS column. Fractions are eluated with the above mentioned mixture, with 2n HCl and 6n HNO3 containing Th- and U-group radionuclides in the first, Rb and Sr in the second and the REE in the third one. The chemical yield is controlled by 90Y, 137Cs and 238Np. In two meteorites fallen in November 1985 and March 1988 onto the territory of East Germany the cosmogenic radionuclides 22Na, 26Al, 48V and 54Mn are measured using a gamma spectrometer installed in an underground laboratory. Because of relatively high content of Rb, Cs and other volatile elements a low condensation temperature of the meteorite Hohenlangenbeck is assumed. Its low 22Na/26Al ratio may be explained by a reduced cosmic particle flux during its last five years in orbit. (author)

    The techniques researched, developed and applied towards the measurement of radioisotope concentrations at ultra-low levels in the real-time solar neutrino experiment BOREXINO at Gran Sasso are presented and illustrated with specific results of widespread interest. We report the use of low-level germanium gamma spectrometry, low-level miniaturized gas proportional counters and low background scintillation detectors developed in solar neutrino research. Each now sets records in its field. We additionally describe our techniques of radiochemical ultra-pure, few atom manipulations and extractions. Forefront measurements also result from the powerful combination of neutron activation and low-level counting. Finally, with our techniques and commercially available mass spectrometry and atomic absorption spectroscopy, new low-level detection limits for isotopes of interest are obtained.

    To evaluate the effects of diffuse contamination, biological measurements were applied in a scrap cargo harbour, a marina and an industrial area. Metal accumulation and biomarkers (survival in air, digestive gland and gonad histopathology, lysosomal membrane stability, intralysosomal metal accumulation, transcription of vitellogenin and MT20, peroxisome proliferation and micronuclei formation) were measured in transplanted mussels, together with metrics of benthic invertebrates. Benthic species were classified into ecological groups and univariate indexes were calculated. The marina showed high richness (16) and percentage of opportunistic species (55.1%) and low metal accumulation. Mussels in the scrap cargo harbour showed high metal accumulation, up-regulation of MT20 transcription, reduced health status (LP<6 min) and increased micronuclei frequencies (up to 11.3‰). At the industrial area, low species richness (4) and badly organised assemblages were detected and chemical analyses indicated significant amounts of bioavailable metals.     In recent years, the availability of reference evapotranspiration (ETo) data is greatly increased. ETo, in conjunction with coefficients accounting for the difference between the vegetation and the reference surface, provides estimation of the actual evapotranspiration (ETa). The coefficients approach was applied in the past mainly for crops, due the lack of experimental data and difficulties to account for terrain and vegetation variability in natural ecosystems. Moreover, the assessment of ETa over large spatial scale by measurements is often time consuming, and requires several measurement points with relatively expensive and sophisticated instrumentation and techniques (e.g. eddy covariance). The Ecosystem Water Program (ECOWAT) was recently developed to help estimates of ETa of ecosystems by accounting for microclimate, vegetation type, plant density, and water stress. ETa on natural and semi-natural ecosystems has several applications, e.g. water status assessment, fire danger estimation, and ecosystem management practices. In this work, results obtained using ECOWAT to assess ETa of a forest ecosystem located in Hungary are reported. The site is a part of the EU-FP7 INCREASE project, which aims to study the effects of climate change on European shrubland ecosystems. In the site, a climate manipulation experiment was setted up to have a warming and a drought treatment (besides the control). Each treatment was replicated three times We show how the ECOWAT model performed when the predicted actual evapotranspiration is compared with actual evapotranspiration obtained from Surface Renewal method and with soil moisture measurements. ECOWAT was able to capture the differences in the water balance at treatment level, confirming its potential as a tool for water status assessment.   18. PSA Level 2 activities for RBMK reactors

    Probabilistic safety analyses (PSAs) of the boiling water graphite moderated pressure tube reactors (RBMKs) have been developed only recently and they are limited to Level 1. Activities at the IAEA were first motivated because of the difficulties to characterize core damage for RBMK reactors. Core damage probability is used in documents of the IAEA as a convenient single valued measure, for example for probabilistic safety criteria. The limited number of PSAs that have been completed for the RBMK reactors have shown that several special features of these channel type reactors necessitate revisiting of the characterization of core damage for these reactors. Furthermore, it has become increasingly evident that detailed deterministic analysis of DBAs and beyond design basis accidents reveal considerable insights into RBMK response to various accident conditions. These analyses can also help in better characterizing the outstanding phenomenological uncertainties, improved EOPs and AM strategies, including potential risk-beneficial accident negative backfits.   19. Ferromagnetic interaction model of activity level in workplace communication

    The nature of human-human interaction, specifically, how people synchronize with each other in multiple-participant conversations, is described by a ferromagnetic interaction model of people’s activity levels. We found two microscopic human interaction characteristics from a real-environment face-to-face conversation. The first characteristic is that people quite regularly synchronize their activity level with that of the other participants in a conversation. The second characteristic is that the degree of synchronization increases as the number of participants increases. Based on these microscopic ferromagnetic characteristics, a “conversation activity level” was modeled according to the Ising model. The results of a simulation of activity level based on this model well reproduce macroscopic experimental measurements of activity level. This model will give a new insight into how people interact with each other in a conversation.

  20. Alpha activity measurement with lsc

    Recently, we showed that the alpha activity in liquid samples can be measured using a liquid scintillation analyzer without alpha/beta discrimination capability. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the performances of the method and to optimize the procedure of the sample preparation. A series of tests was performed to validate the procedure of alpha emitting radionuclides extraction in aqueous samples with Actinide Resin, especially regarding to the contact time required to extract all alpha nuclides. The main conclusions were that a minimum 18 hours stirring time is needed to achieve a percent recovery of the alpha nuclides grater than 90% and that the counting efficiency of alphas measurements with LSC is nearly 100%.   1. Measuring water level in a steam generator

    A method is provided for determining and controlling steam water level in a steam generator of a nuclear plant, comprising calibrating the water level sensor in terms of velocity head and also adjusting the high level setpoint in terms of a velocity head bias. The water level differential pressure sensor is calibrated so that maximum water level is indicated as that level corresponding to the upper tap level less velocity head at maximum power plant power. The high level set point is calculated as corresponding to the riser level less a velocity head bias in flow path, the bias being calculated as maximum velocity head at maximum velocity minus rider head percentage of span times velocity head at maximum power.   3. Activity measurements of radon from construction materials

    This work presents the results of radon concentration measurements of construction materials used in the Brazilian industry, such as clay (red) bricks and concrete blocks. The measurements focused on the detection of indoor radon activity during different construction stages and the analysis of radionuclides present in the construction materials. For this purpose, sealed chambers with internal dimensions of approximately 60×60×60 cm3 were built within a protected and isolated laboratory environment, and stable air humidity and temperature levels were maintained. These chambers were also used for radon emanation reduction tests. The chambers were built in four major stages: (1) assembly of the walls using clay (red) bricks, concrete blocks, and mortar; (2) installation of plaster; (3) finishing of wall surface using lime; and (4) insulation of wall surface and finishing using paint. Radon measurements were performed using polycarbonate etched track detectors. By comparing the three layers applied to the masonry walls, it was concluded that only the last step (wall painting using acrylic varnish) reduced the radon emanation, by a factor of approximately 2. Samples of the construction materials (clay bricks and concrete blocks) were ground, homogenized, and subjected to gamma-ray spectrometry analysis to evaluate the activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K.     OAK B202 The yield of tertiary neutrons with energies greater than 20 MeV has been proposed to determine the high rho R of inertial confinement fusion targets. The activation of carbon is a valuable measurement technique because of its high reaction threshold, the availability of high-purity samples, and relatively low cost. The 12C(n,2n)11C reaction has a Q value of 18.7 MeV, well above the 14.1 MeV primary DT neutron energy. The isotope 11C decays with a half-life of 20.3 min and emits a positron, resulting in the production of two back-to-back, 511 keV gamma rays upon annihilation. The positron decay of 11C is nearly identical to the copper decay used in the activation measurements of 14.1 MeV primary DT yields; therefore, the present copper activation gamma-detection system can be used to detect the tertiary-produced carbon activation. Because the tertiary neutron yield is more than six orders of magnitude lower than primary neutron yield, the carbon activation diagnostic requires ultrapure carbon samples, free from any positron-emitting contamination. In recent years we have developed carbon purification, packaging, and handling procedures that minimize the contamination signal to a level low enough to use carbon activation for tertiary neutron measurements in direct-drive implosion experiments with DT cryogenic targets on OMEGA. Experimental results of contamination measurements in carbon samples performed on high-neutron-yield shots on OMEGA in 2001-2002 will be presented. A concept for implementing a carbon activation system on the National Ignition Facility (NIF)will be discussed.

The measurements were performed at the Laboratory of Applied Nuclear Physics of the Federal University of Technology - Parana (UTFPR) in collaboration with the Center of Nuclear Technology Development of Brazilian Nuclear Energy Committee (CNEN). The experimental setup was based on the electronic radon detector RAD7 (Durridge Company, Inc.). The measurements were carried out with a special kit of accessory vessels (vials) RAD7 H2O, which allows one to identify the 222Rn activity concentration in small water samples of 40 mL and 250 mL in the range going from less than 30 pCi/L to greater than 105 pCi/L. During each measurement a vial from RAD H2O was poured with a sample of water. The air pump, included in the close loop aeration circuit and connected to the vial and RAD7 detector, operated for five minutes to snatch the sample of air maintained above the level of water sample and transporting it from the vial through the system. Evaluation of the concentration of soluble radium (226Ra) salts in water and their activity was performed after 30 days when 222Rn in the water samples reached secular equilibrium. The background measurements were performed using the samples of the distilled water. Considering the importance of background measurements, it was found that the value suggested by user Manual protocol (RAD7) for the case of low activity radon measurements, has to be slightly modified.   8. Measurement of tritium background level in urine of general public

    Tritium is a pure beta particle emitter with a maximum energy of 18.6 keV (mean energy 5.7 keV) and has a physical half-life of 12.3 years. It can be found in nature due to the interaction with cosmic rays in the atmospheric gases and atmospheric nuclear weapon test carried out in the past years. In addition, it is mainly produced by human activities such as heavy water-moderated reactors, nuclear fusion techniques and so on. In case of the workers of NPP, tritium level is high due to the chronical effect by HTO, but it was anticipated that tritium level of the general public, not exposed to tritium source, is low similar to background level. Thus, the verification process of the distillation method for urine samples was performed. When all the measurement condition was the same as real samples, the relative deviation was approximately ± 5% (Table 1). The background tritium level in urine samples of general public was estimated. It was slightly different from overseas survey results because it is supposed that the tritium activity in human body is originated from environmental influence such as food, water, and air. In addition, the effective dose was evaluated with reference of ICRP recommend values. As a result, in normal condition without accident tritium level of urine samples from public was similar to background level.

  10. Low-level measurements of tritium in water

    Using a liquid scintillation counter, an experimental procedure for measuring low-level activity concentrations of tritium in environmental water has been developed by our laboratory, using the electrolytic tritium enrichment. Additionally, some quality tests were applied in order to assure the goodness of the method. Well-known water samples collected in the Tagus River (West of Spain) and the Danube River (Bulgaria), both affected by nuclear plant releases, were analysed and results were compared to previous data. The analytical procedure was applied to drinking water samples from the public water supply of Seville and mineral waters from different springs in Spain in order to characterize its origin. Due to the very low levels of tritium in the analysed samples, some results were reported as lower than the minimum detectable activity concentration (MDA). However, the count rate of these measurements was over the background count rate of LS counter in all the cases. For that reason, an exhaustive discussion about the meaning of the MDA, using an experimental essay, was made in order to establish a rigorous criterion that leads to a reliable value in the case of low-level measurements

    While the literature clearly acknowledges that individuals may experience different levels of segregation across their various socio-geographical spaces, most measures of segregation are intended to be used in the residential space. Using spatially aggregated data to evaluate segregation in the residential space has been the norm and thus individual's segregation experiences in other socio-geographical spaces are often de-emphasized or ignored. This paper attempts to provide a more comprehensive approach in evaluating segregation beyond the residential space. The entire activity spaces of individuals are taken into account with individuals serving as the building blocks of the analysis. The measurement principle is based upon the exposure dimension of segregation. The proposed measure reflects the exposure of individuals of a referenced group in a neighborhood to the populations of other groups that are found within the activity spaces of individuals in the referenced group. Using the travel diary data collected from the tri-county area in southeast Florida and the imputed racial-ethnic data, this paper demonstrates how the proposed segregation measurement approach goes beyond just measuring population distribution patterns in the residential space and can provide a more comprehensive evaluation of segregation by considering various socio-geographical spaces.

The sites are part of the national Radiation Monitoring Network. The aerosol samplers work continuously mostly with one-week sampling periods under normal circumstances. The activities on filters are measured by gamma-spectrometry in order to determine man-made {sup 137}Cs and natural {sup 7}Be and {sup 210}Pb in four laboratories. This paper is dealing with the results from the site at Prague (as a site of the European 'sparse monitoring network') where the most sensitive measurements are performed and wider spectrum of radionuclides are analysed. The filters with total flown through volume of about 150 000 m{sup 3} (900 m{sup 3}/h) per week without any pretreatment are counted for 500 000 s positioned around the HPGe detectors of relative efficiency of 100-150%. The minimum significant activity (MSA; confidence level 95%) lies around 0.1 mBq/m{sup 3} for {sup 137}Cs for these conditions so that the {sup 137}Cs activity concentration is usually established with relative statistical deviation of about 10%. Besides the appointed radionuclides, {sup 22}Na and {sup 40}K are determined in filters by gamma spectrometry, too. After the gamma spectrometric analysis, radiochemical separation followed by alpha spectrometry or beta measurements is used for determination of {sup 238}Pu, {sup 239,240}Pu and {sup 90}Sr activities in the quarterly combined filters. Continuous collection of the air for the assessment of activity concentrations of {sup 85}Kr and {sup 14}C in monthly samples is performed in Prague, too. At present the values of {sup 137}Cs activity concentrations range approximately from tenths to 1 of mBq/m{sup 3}.   20. Measurement sum theory and application - Application to low level measurements

    In laboratories, most of the Total Sum methods implemented today use substitution or censure methods for nonsignificant or negative values, and thus create biases which can sometimes be quite large. They are usually positive, and generate, for example, becquerel (Bq) counting or 'administrative' quantities of materials (= 'virtual'), thus artificially falsifying the records kept by the laboratories under regulatory requirements (environment release records, waste records, etc.). This document suggests a methodology which will enable the user to avoid such biases. It is based on the following two fundamental rules: - The Total Sum of measurement values must be established based on all the individual measurement values, even those considered non-significant including the negative values. Any modification of these values, under the pretext that they are not significant, will inevitably lead to biases in the accumulated result and falsify the evaluation of its uncertainty. - In Total Sum operations, the decision thresholds are arrived at in a similar way to the approach used for uncertainties. The document deals with four essential aspects of the notion of 'measurement Total Sums': - The expression of results and associated uncertainties close to Decision Thresholds, and Detection or Quantification Limits, - The Total Sum of these measurements: sum or mean, - The calculation of the uncertainties associated with the Total Sums, - Result presentation (particularly when preparing balance sheets or reports, etc.) Several case studies arising from different situations are used to illustrate the methodology: environmental monitoring reports, release reports, and chemical impurity Total Sums for the qualification of a finished product. The special case of material balances, in which the measurements are usually all significant and correlated (the covariance term cannot then be ignored) will be the subject of a future second document.   1. Measurement of radon activity concentration in buildings

    Radon exposure, along with medical-related exposure, is the leading source of exposure to ionising radiation for the French population. Measurement campaigns are done in the action plan, drawn up by the French nuclear safety authority (ASN), in cooperation with the French directorate for housing, town planning and countryside (DHUP), the French radiation protection and nuclear safety institute (IRSN), the French health monitoring institute (InVS) and the French scientific and technical centre for construction (CSTB). The review of 2005-2008 measurement campaign shows that of the 7356 buildings screened, 84.8% had activity concentration levels below the 400 Bq/m3 action level. For the other buildings (15.2%), action will be required to reduce human exposure to radon, possibly including building renovation/redevelopment work. In the 1999-2002 measurement campaign,12% of the 13,000 buildings screened had a radon activity concentration level higher than 400 Bq/m3. In addition, the ASN and the French general directorate of labour (DGT) are continuing to work on drawing up regulations for occupational risk management. The second national health and environment plan (PNSE 2) was published on 26 June 2009. It follows on from the actions initiated in PNSE 1, a document provided for under the Public Health Act dated 9 August 2004 and under the French 'Grenelle' environmental agreements. On the basis of guidelines laid out in PNSE 2, a radon action plan for 2009-2012 will be drawn up, enabling some of the actions to be continued, particularly in the fields of new building projects and dwellings.   2. Magnetospheric impulse response for many levels of geomagnetic activity

    The temporal relationship between the solar wind and magnetospheric activity has been studied using 34 intervals of high time resolution IMP 8 solar wind data and the corresponding AL auroral activity index. The median value of the AL index for each interval were utilized to rank the intervals according to geomagnetic activity level. The linear prediction filtering technique was then applied to model magnetospheric response as measured by the AL index to the solar wind input function VB/sub s/. The linear prediction filtering routine produces a filter of time-lagged response coefficients which estimates the most general linear relationship between the chosen input and output parameters of the magnetospheric system. It is found that the filters are composed of two response pulses speaking at time lags of 20 and 60 min. The amplitude of the 60-min pulse is the larger for moderate activity levels, while the 20-min pulse is the larger for strong activity levels. A possible interpretation is that the 20-min pulse represents magnetospheric activity driven directly by solar wind coupling and that the 60-min pulse represents magnetospheric activity driven by the relase of energy previously stored in the magnetotal. If this interpretation is correct, the linear filtering results suggest that both the driven and the unloading models of magnetospheric response are important facets of a more comprehensive response model

  3. General considerations about the tritium activity levels observed in France and about the sampling and measurement techniques used by IRSN in the framework of the environment monitoring of the 2M Process site at Saint-Maur-des-Fosses

    A building of 2M Process company at Saint-Maur-des-Fosses (France) has been accidentally contaminated after the handling of a tritium contaminated device. The consequence has been a tritium release inside and in the close environment of the building. Since November 5, on request of the French nuclear safety authority (ASN), the French institute of radiation protection and nuclear safety (IRSN) has performed tritium measurements in water, air and plants sampled in the vicinity of the building in order to delimit the contaminated area and to follow its decay during and after the cleansing of the building. In order to give help to the interpretation of the results of this monitoring action, this note supplies some general information about tritium and its activity levels usually encountered in France (air, rainwater, surface waters, plants, drinking water, foodstuff), and about the sampling and measurement techniques used by IRSN in the framework of the periodical environment monitoring of the 2M Process site.     We are studying a measuring system of environmental level radioactivity by using IP. On γ ray measurement, many lead blocks are used for the natural radiation shielding. Sometimes, weak contaminations which can not detected by usually used detector such as GM survey meter bother us. By contacting IP on lead blocks for about 12 hs, contaminations on them are easily found out and we can decontaminate the small spots by shaving. This method will be applied for the decontamination of the valuables with no serious destructions.   7. Characterization of Eddy current sensor for measuring mold level

    In continuous steel billet casting, keeping the mold level steady is one of the most important technologies for maintaining steel quality. In this study, a eddy current level meter which measures the level of the continuous mold has been developed, based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. The measured error was minimized by the characterization of distance amplitude curve at 50 kHz, AC 12 Vpp. The use of the eddy current sensor with the correction of a log-amplifier showed that the resolution of the measurement was within 0.5mm on the period of level 0-100 mm and 1.0 mm on the period of level 100-250 mm. The eddy current level meter with associated the electronic device was installed in a continuous caster 1 M/C, Gwangyang, POSCO works and measured the level of the continuous mold.

Methods 111 adolescents completed a travel diary with concurrent accelerometry. The main exposure was self-reported utilization of a physical activity resource (none/1+ resources). The main outcomes were total minutes spent in daily 1) moderate-vigorous physical activity and 2) vigorous physical activity. Results Utilizing a physical activity resource was significantly associated with total minutes in moderate-vigorous physical activity. African-Americans and males had significantly greater moderate-vigorous physical activity. Conclusions Results from this study support the development and use of physical activity resources.   9. Low level laser therapy reduces inflammation in activated Achilles tendinitis

    Objective: Low level laser therapy (LLLT) has been forwarded as therapy for osteoarthritis and tendinopathy. Results in animal and cell studies suggest that LLLT may act through a biological mechanism of inflammatory modulation. The current study was designed to investigate if LLLT has an anti-inflammatory effect on activated tendinitis of the Achilles tendon. Methods: Seven patients with bilateral Achilles tendonitis (14 tendons) who had aggravated symptoms by pain-inducing activity immediately prior to the study. LLLT (1.8 Joules for each of three points along the Achilles tendon with 904nm infrared laser) and placebo LLLT were administered to either Achilles tendons in a random order to which patients and therapist were blinded. Inflammation was examined by 1) mini-invasive microdialysis for measuring the concentration of inflammatory marker PGE II in the peritendinous tissue, 2) ultrasound with Doppler measurement of peri- and intratendinous blood flow, 3) pressure pain algometry and 4) single hop test. Results: PGE 2- levels were significantly reduced at 75, 90 and 105 minutes after active LLLT compared both to pre-treatment levels (p=0.026) and to placebo LLLT (p=0.009). Changes in pressure pain threshold (PPT) were significantly different (P=0.012) between groups. PPT increased by a mean value of 0.19 kg/cm2 [95%CI:0.04 to 0.34] after treatment in the active LLLT group, while pressure pain threshold was reduced by -0.20 kg/cm2 [95%CI:-0.45 to 0.05] after placebo LLLT. Conclusion: LLLT can be used to reduce inflammatory musculskeletal pain as it reduces inflammation and increases pressure pain threshold levels in activity-induced pain episodes of Achilles tendinopathy.

    Photocatalytic materials are being used to purify air, to kill microbes, and to keep surfaces clean. A wide variety of materials are being developed, many of which have different abilities to absorb various wavelengths of light. Material variability, combined with both spectral illumination intensity and spectral distribution variability, will produce a wide range of performance results. The proposed technology estimates photocatalytic active radiation (PcAR), a unit of radiation that normalizes the amount of light based on its spectral distribution and on the ability of the material to absorb that radiation. Photocatalytic reactions depend upon the number of electron-hole pairs generated at the photocatalytic surface. The number of electron-hole pairs produced depends on the number of photons per unit area per second striking the surface that can be absorbed and whose energy exceeds the bandgap of the photocatalytic material. A convenient parameter to describe the number of useful photons is the number of moles of photons striking the surface per unit area per second. The unit of micro-einsteins (or micromoles) of photons per m2 per sec is commonly used for photochemical and photoelectric-like phenomena. This type of parameter is used in photochemistry, such as in the conversion of light energy for photosynthesis. Photosynthetic response correlates with the number of photons rather than by energy because, in this photochemical process, each molecule is activated by the absorption of one photon. In photosynthesis, the number of photons absorbed in the 400 700 nm spectral range is estimated and is referred to as photosynthetic active radiation (PAR). PAR is defined in terms of the photosynthetic photon flux density measured in micro-einsteins of photons per m2 per sec.     We have designed and built portable level detectors and fixed level monitors based on neutron scattering and detection principles. The main components of these devices, which we call neutron backscatter gauges, are a neutron emitting radioisotope, a neutron detector, and a ratemeter. The gauge is a good detector for hydrogen but is much less sensitive to most other materials. This allows level measurements of hydrogen bearing materials, such as hydrocarbons, to be made through the walls of metal vessels. Measurements can be made conveniently through steel walls which are a few inches thick. We have used neutron backscatter gauges in a wide variety of level measurement applications encountered in the petrochemical industry.     Full Text Available The aim of this study was to investigate physical activity (PA level of the Turkish males who lived in BUrsa. A total of 365 subjects between 18 - 69 age participated to this study. To determine physical activity levels, International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ was applied. PA levels of subjects were categorized as inactive, minimum active and HEPA active by using MET method. The relations of parameters, such as their age, BMI, education, marital status, number of children, smoking and alcohol use were determined with PA level. The results were analyzed by using Chi - Square test. The participants have 1725 METmin/week average physical activity level, and 47.7 % of them were physically inactive, 30.4 % were physically minimum active and 21.9 % were physically hepa active. As a result, it can be said that the physical activity levels of Turkish males who lived in Bursa are not sufficient and the inactive people are very common.

  16. Radiation exposure levels in phosphate mining activities

    Radon, radon daughter concentration and gamma ray exposure rate were measured at different places in the phosphate mining areas of Syria. The grab sampling method was used. For radon measurements, discrete air samples without progeny were collected over short periods of time, whereas daughters were collected on filter paper. A three-count procedure was used for the measurement of radon daughter concentrations to improve accuracy. The measurements were carried out at 37 locations selected in the mines, factories, offices and homes in the mining area. The sampling was repeated monthly for a full calendar year. Workers and their families were classified in different categories according to the nature of their jobs. The doses were estimated using proper occupancy factors. The dose equivalent from radon daughters varies from 1 mSv.y-1 to a maximum of 10 mSv.y-1. Radon concentrations vary from 100 Bq.m-3 to several hundreds. (author)

    PC based Integral Gamma Activity measurement system has been developed for measuring the gross gamma activity. The Integral system comprises of the Ion chamber, electrometer amplifier and data acquisition system. This system is used for measuring the activity and also for recording of the decay characteristics. A windows based computer program has been developed for data acquisition and storage during the experiment. The system records the detector current output in the range of 10 pA to 10 nA. The measured current was converted into pre-calibrated gross gamma activity which was used for estimating the power distribution within the reactor core.     Full Text Available Analysis is made of K-index data from groups of ground-based geomagnetic observatories in Germany, Britain, and Australia, 1868.0–2009.0, solar cycles 11–23. Methods include nonparametric measures of trends and statistical significance used by the hydrological and climatological research communities. Among the three observatory groups, German K data systematically record the highest disturbance levels, followed by the British and, then, the Australian data. Signals consistently seen in K data from all three observatory groups can be reasonably interpreted as physically meaninginful: (1 geomagnetic activity has generally increased over the past 141 years. However, the detailed secular evolution of geomagnetic activity is not well characterized by either a linear trend nor, even, a monotonic trend. Therefore, simple, phenomenological extrapolations of past trends in solar and geomagnetic activity levels are unlikely to be useful for making quantitative predictions of future trends lasting longer than a solar cycle or so. (2 The well-known tendency for magnetic storms to occur during the declining phase of a sunspot-solar cycles is clearly seen for cycles 14–23; it is not, however, clearly seen for cycles 11–13. Therefore, in addition to an increase in geomagnetic activity, the nature of solar-terrestrial interaction has also apparently changed over the past 141 years.

  7. Charged fusion product loss measurements using nuclear activation

    In ITER, α particle loss measurements will be required in order to understand the alpha particle physics. Techniques capable of operating in a fusion reactor environment need further development. Recent experimental studies on JET demonstrated the potential of nuclear activation to measure the flux of escaping MeV ions. New results from MeV ion induced activation of metallic, ceramic, and crystal samples placed near the plasma edge are reported. Activation products were measured as function of orientation with respect to the magnetic field as well as function of the distance to the plasma. Sample activity was measured using ultralow-level gamma-ray spectrometry. Distribution of 14.68 MeV fusion proton induced activation products is strongly anisotropic in agreement with simulations and falls off sharply with increasing distance to the plasma. Prospects for using the technique in ITER are discussed.

  9. Assembly for activity distribution measurement of wires

    Activation method is used as a basic method for the neutron fluence measurement in the LVR-15 research reactor. Activation foils have usually been used as the monitors. At present an assembly for the measurement of linear specific activity distribution of wires has been developed. The assembly allows the activation wires to be used for neutron fluence measurement mainly in the reactor core. More detailed results of linear distribution and simpler handling with radioactive material are the advantages of activation wires compared with foils. More difficult calibration and processing of measured data are disadvantages on the other hand. The assembly consists of a spectrometer with HPGe detector for gamma activity measurement, a Pb shielding collimator around the detector, an outer Pb shielding, a transporting equipment and a controlling PC. The diameter of the collimator is 20 mm. The wire from Cu, Fe, Ni or Co material with diameter of 0.3 mm to 1.0 mm is placed on a support Al stick with diameter of 6 mm. After irradiation the stick with the wire is placed in the transporting equipment above the Pb shielding collimator and measured. Response function for the point radiation source on the line, where the wire is placed during the measurement, is the main characteristic of the assembly. The response function also depends on the energy of gamma radiation. The design of the Pb shielding collimator is described and the measured response functions for a few point radiation sources are given in the paper. During the measurement the stick with the wire moves above the collimator aperture and the peak count rates depending on position of wire with step of 10 mm to 50 mm are measured. As the response function for point source has not the ideal rectangular distribution (i.e. constant positive value above the collimator aperture and zero value for points out of the aperture) the evaluation of activities is not so simple as for measurement of individual samples. Methods PAL, calculated as total energy expenditure divided by basal metabolic rate, was evaluated in 11 adult men using three different conditions for 24-hour human calorimeter measurements: a low-activity day (L-day targeted at a low active level of PAL (1.45, and a high-frequency moderate activity day (M-day or a high-frequency vigorous activity day (V-day targeted at an active level of PAL (1.75. These subjects were permitted only light activities except prescribed activities. In a separate group of 41 adults, free-living PAL was evaluated using doubly-labeled water (DLW. In both experiments, step counts per day were also measured using an accelerometer. Results In the human calorimeter study, PAL and step counts were 1.42 ± 0.10 and 8,973 ± 543 steps/d (L-day, 1.82 ± 0.14 and 29,588 ± 1,126 steps/d (M-day, and 1.74 ± 0.15 and 23,755 ± 1,038 steps/d (V-day, respectively. In the DLW study, PAL and step counts were 1.73 ± 0.15 and 10,022 ± 2,605 steps/d, and there was no significant relationship between PAL and daily step counts. Conclusions These results indicate that an enormous number of steps are needed for an active level of PAL if individuals extend physical activity-induced energy expenditure by only locomotive activity. Therefore, non-locomotive activity such as household activity should also play a significant role in increasing PAL under free-living conditions.

    Telomerase activity has been found in about 85% cancer cells, while no activity observed in normal cells, so that telomerase has been proposed as a marker for cancer detection. Here, we describe electrical detection of telomerase activity using capacitance measurements. We have investigated the length dependence of capacitance on DNA solutions and found that the capacitance of DNA solutions were dependent on the DNA length. In addition, upon adding telomerase into the solution of telomeric substrate primer, the capacitance was observed to change as a function of time due to the telomeric elongation. These results suggest that this novel nanosensor may be used for rapid detection of telomerase activity.

    Wafer-level-optics now is widely used in smart phone camera, mobile video conferencing or in medical equipment that require tiny cameras. Extracting quantitative phase information has received increased interest in order to quantify the quality of manufactured wafer-level-optics, detect defective devices before packaging, and provide feedback for manufacturing process control, all at the wafer-level for high-throughput microfabrication. We demonstrate two phase imaging methods, digital holographic microscopy (DHM) and Transport-of-Intensity Equation (TIE) to measure the phase of the wafer-level lenses. DHM is a laser-based interferometric method based on interference of two wavefronts. It can perform a phase measurement in a single shot. While a minimum of two measurements of the spatial intensity of the optical wave in closely spaced planes perpendicular to the direction of propagation are needed to do the direct phase retrieval by solving a second-order differential equation, i.e., with a non-iterative deterministic algorithm from intensity measurements using the Transport-of-Intensity Equation (TIE). But TIE is a non-interferometric method, thus can be applied to partial-coherence light. We demonstrated the capability and disability for the two phase measurement methods for wafer-level optics inspection.

Furthermore, the model also addresses the activity of 220Rn and 222Rn progeny, which being metals represent potential risk of ionization chamber contamination that could increase the background of further measurements. Some preliminary comparison of experimental data and theoretical calculations is presented. Obtained transient and steady-state solutions could be used for planning of Rn in soil gas measurements as well as for accuracy assessment of obtained results together with efficiency evaluation of chosen measurements procedure. Differential Mode (DM noise is measured between each power lines. EMI radiated emissions occur in the range of 150 KHz-30MHz. EMI filter is usually needed in the input of the Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS to attenuate the noise. The proposed approach allows measurement of noise level in Switched Mode Power Supply without interleaving its normal operation. With proper set up calibration, the proposed approach can be used to measure the noise level with reasonable accuracy. The noise level is measure from the frequency of 1MHz-3MHz using signal generator the signal is induced in the injected probe and using receiving probe noise level is measured in db using spectrum analyser.

  18. Energy requirements and physical activity level of active elderly people in rural areas of cuba

    Obesity and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) are common in the Third Age and increasing in Cuba. Among the life-style changes associated with increased prevalence of obesity and its related disorders, diet and activity patterns are prime candidates. The transition to this life-style model may induce a decrease in the energy needs. There is an urgent need for tools which have been validated for measuring diet and physical activity in nutritional studies in the developing world, but also a more urgent need for reference values for the total energy requirements of healthy elderly people. Regular physical activity reduces the likelihood to develop diseases that characterise the metabolic cardiovascular syndrome. Previous studies done in Havana showed values of physical activity level (PAL) which are lower than the reported for elderly subjects. Elderly people living in rural areas use to have physical activity levels which differ from the observed in urban areas. With the purpose of estimating the energy requirements, a group of 40 apparently healthy people older than 60 years of age living in a rural mountain community will be submitted to a medical, epidemiological, dietary, anthropometric and insulin resistance study. Physical activity will be determined by questionnaire and by the calculation of the PAL from the basal metabolic rate (BMR) and total energy expenditure (TEE) measured with the doubly-labelled water method (DLW). Associations with the prevalence of insulin resistance and obesity will be assessed. (author)

    A short (~11 cm) cavity of an Nd : YAG laser was Q-switched by LiF : \\mathrm F^-_2 and GSGG : Cr3+ : Cr4+ : Nd3+ crystals. This resulted in stable generation of short (~2.5 ns) pulses with energies in excess of 6 mJ. Pulses with ~300 and ~150 mJ energies for the first and second harmonics, respectively, and of ~100 ps duration were obtained at the output of a stimulated-Brillouin-scattering compressor and a three-pass Nd : YAG amplifier. A study of the gain recovery after passage of a short saturating pulse through the active element yielded the upper limit (1 ns) of the nonradiative relaxation time of the 4I11/2 lower active level of the neodymium ion.

    We present a lifetime measurements of the 6s level of rubidium. We use a time-correlated single-photon counting technique on two different samples of rubidium atoms. A vapor cell with variable rubidium density and a sample of atoms confined and cooled in a magneto-optical trap. The 5P_{1/2} level serves as the resonant intermediate step for the two step excitation to the 6s level. We detect the decay of the 6s level through the cascade fluorescence of the 5P_{3/2} level at 780 nm. The two samples have different systematic effects, but we obtain consistent results that averaged give a lifetime of 45.57 +- 0.17 ns.

    Measurement of tank level, particularly for cryogenic propellants, has proven to be a difficult proposition. Current methods based on differential pressure, capacitance sensors, temperature sensors, etc.; do not provide sufficiently accurate or robust measurements, especially at run time. This paper describes a simple, but effective method to determine propellant volume by measuring very small deformations of the structure supporting the tank. Results of a laboratory study to validate the method, and experimental data from a deployed system are presented. A comparison with an existing differential pressure sensor shows that the strain gage system provides a very good quality signal even during pressurization.

    Design of an intelligent level measurement technique by Capacitance Level Sensor (CLS) using an Optimized Artificial Neural Network (OANN) is discussed in this paper. The objectives of the present work are (i) to extend the linearity range of measurement to 100% of the full scale, (ii) to make the measurement technique adaptive of variation in permittivity of liquid, liquid temperature, and to achieve objectives (i) and (ii) using an optimized neural network. An optimized ANN is considered by comparing various algorithms, transfer functions of neuron, and number of hidden layers based on minimum mean square error (MSE). The output of CLS is capacitance. A data conversion unit is used to convert it to voltage. A suitable optimized ANN is added, in place of conventional calibration circuit, in cascade to data conversion unit. The proposed technique provides linear relationship of the overall system over the full input range and makes it adaptive of variation in liquid permittivity and/or temperature. When an unknown level is tested with an arbitrary liquid permittivity, and temperature, the proposed technique has measured the level correctly. Results show that the proposed scheme has fulfilled the objectives.

    Technoeconomic paradigms based economic growth theories suggest that waves of technological innovations drove the economic growth of advanced economies. Widespread economic degradation and pollution is an unintended consequence of such growth. Tackling environmental and social issues at firm levels would help us to overcome such issues at macro-levels. Consequently, the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) reporting approach promotes firm level economic, environmental and social performances. Incorporating Zink's (2014) 3-pillar presentation model, this paper indicates that economic, social and environmental performances tend to be reported at firm level. All three pillars are not covered evenly at the activity levels. Thus, a loophole is identified whereby excellent environmental performance at activity levels could potentially leave poor social performance undisclosed. A refinement of the TBL paradigm, whereby all three pillars are covered at the activity level, is suggested, to enhance sustainability reporting. PMID:27029522

  18. Solar Activity, Different Geomagnetic Activity Levels and Acute Myocardial Infarction

    Results on revealing a possible relationship between solar activity (SA) and geomagnetic activity (GMA) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) morbidity are presented. Studies were based on medical data covering the period from 1.12.1995 to 31.12.2004 and concerned daily distribution of patients with AMI diagnose (in total 1192 cases) from Sofia region on the day of admission at the hospital. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to check the significance of GMA intensity effect and the type of geomagnetic storms, those caused by Magnetic Clouds (MC) and by High Speed Solar Wind Streams (HSSWS), on AMI morbidity. Relevant correlation coefficients were calculated. Results revealed statistically significant positive correlation between considered GMA indices and AMI. ANOVA revealed that AMI number was signifi- cantly increased from the day before (-1st) till the day after (+1st) geomagnetic storms with different intensities. Geomagnetic storms caused by MC were related to significant increase of AMI number in comparison with the storms caused by HSSWS. There was a trend for such different effects even on -1st and +1st day.

Photochemical smog is now observed in many urban and industrial centers around the world and it has become a common phenomenon in many large cities. Ozone is a most harmful pollutant for humans, in addition it plays an important role in damaging vegetation and materials. Therefore it becomes important to measure the ground level ozone at different locations especially in the center of cities. Approach: The ground level ozone concentration at different locations in Baghdad city was identified. Five different sites have been chosen to identify the ground level ozone concentration. Two sites were chosen as areas contained point source (power plant station in addition to high traffic load and the other three sites were chosen as areas containing heavy traffic only (line source. The measurement focuses on spring and fall because these periods display favorable meteorology to ozone formation. Results: During the research period the maximum values (peaks for ground level ozone concentration were observed in the fall: at Al-Za’afarania area 101ppb as an average, at Al-Dora 87 ppb as an average (which represent the point sources and at line source areas 48 ppb as an average. In spring, the peaks of ozone concentration observed to be at the same height, about 50 ppb for all sites. Conclusion: The results show that the effect of power plant stations in forming ozone is larger than traffic load. The comparison between the ground level ozone concentrations that measured during the research period in spring and fall and the Ambient Air Quality Standards (AAQS shows that: (1 No exceeded levels were observed in spring for all sites. (2 In the fall, the AAQS for ozone was exceeded in Al-Za’afarania area at 12: PM, 1: PM, 2: PM and 3: PM and in Al-Dora at 2: PM.

    Full Text Available The aim of this study was to investigate physical activity (PA level of the Turkish males who lived in BUrsa. A total of 365 subjects between 18 - 69 age participated to this study. To determine physical activity levels, International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ was applied. PA levels of subjects were categorized as inactive, minimum active and HEPA active by using MET method. The relations of parameters, such as their age, BMI, education, marital status, number of children, smoking and alcohol use were determined with PA level. The results were analyzed by using Chi - Square test. The participants have 1725 METmin/week average physical activity level, and 47.7 % of them were physically inactive, 30.4 % were physically minimum active and 21.9 % were physically hepa active. As a result, it can be said that the physical activity levels of Turkish males who lived in Bursa are not sufficient and the inactive people are very common.

  1. Investigation of Leveling Equipment for High Precision Measurements

    At SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center) a fully automated vertical comparator for the calibration of digital levels and invar staffs was developed by the Metrology Department in cooperation with the Institute of Engineering Geodesy and Measurement Systems at the Graz University of Technology. This vertical comparator is the first in the US. With the vertical comparator it is possible to perform system calibration and CCD camera measurements of rods. System calibration uses the height readings of the digital level at different positions of the rod and compares them with the reference readings obtained by the interferometer.   2. The measurement of burn-up level in HTR-10

    Without shutting down the HTR-10, each fuel ball unloaded from the core must be measured. Judgment is made whether the desired burn-up level is reached. A fuel ball should be reloaded into the core when its burn-up level is less than 72,000 Mwd/tu. Since the measurement of burn-up level for a ball containing 0.9g 235U at most must be nondestructive, a γ spectroscopy method with high-resolution for the fission product 137Cs is typically chosen. However, because the HTR-10 is not provided with any kind of external calibrating source, it is impossible to achieve the goal that the accuracy of measurement is up to 2% by the above method. The method measuring burn-up levels without external source uses the ratio of 134Cs to 137Cs and gets bogged down in something unusual that both successful and failed examples have alternated in publications. The inner calibrating method is proposed in the paper. It is necessary to solve the following problems: a) The simple relationship between 134Cs/137Cs and burn-up level is held only in a specified range, but not for a spent ball. b) The migration must be ignored. c) How to deal with the neutron spectrum within HTR-10? The paper also introduces such useful method as neutron spectrum correction, picking out the graphite balls and extraction of 137Cs from γ spectra of reactor. The appropriate instrumentation that discriminates out the spent fuel balls and picks out the graphite balls is described. (author)

    Active ageing level and its discrepancy in different regions (Bangkok, Central, North, Northeast, and South) of Thailand have been examined for prioritizing the policy agenda to be implemented. Attempt has been made to test preliminary active ageing models for Thai older persons and hence active ageing index (AAI, ranges from 0 to 1) has been estimated. Using nationally representative data and confirmatory factor analysis approach, this study justified active ageing models for female and male older persons in Thailand. Results revealed that active ageing level of Thai older persons is not high (mean AAIs for female and male older persons are 0.64 and 0.61, resp., and those are significantly different (p health and economic security, to promote participation in social groups and longer working lives, and to arrange learning programs, would be helpful for increasing older persons' active ageing level in Thailand.

    Comparative measurements with different precipitation collectors were carried out for a period of three years in nine measuring sites with different pollutant levels. In addition to the total deposition, the dry and wet fractions were also determined. The specimens were analyzed as follows: Conductivity, PH, total dust precipitation with the lead and cadmium fractions; Anions: Chloride, fluoride, nitrate, sulfate and silicates; Cations: Aluminum, calcium, iron, copper, magnesium, manganese, sodium, nickel, zinc and ammonium. The statistical evaluations in principle yield no significant differences between the different deposition collectors. (orig.)

  8. Interlaboratory comparison of low-level tritium measurements in water

    The paper presents and discusses results submitted by 41 laboratories who participated in the third inter-laboratory comparison of low-level tritium measurements in waters organized by the Isotope Hydrology Section of IAEA. Four waters of different concentration were prepared by diluting NBS 4926 standard. A high proportion of unsatisfactory results were received for all four samples, revealing problems in control and assessment of measurement errors, and also a generally unsatisfactory situation regarding standardization. Recommendations are made for the adoption of a single parent standard and a fixed half-life for decay corrections. (author)

  10. Inferring brain-computational mechanisms with models of activity measurements.

    High-resolution functional imaging is providing increasingly rich measurements of brain activity in animals and humans. A major challenge is to leverage such data to gain insight into the brain's computational mechanisms. The first step is to define candidate brain-computational models (BCMs) that can perform the behavioural task in question. We would then like to infer which of the candidate BCMs best accounts for measured brain-activity data. Here we describe a method that complements each BCM by a measurement model (MM), which simulates the way the brain-activity measurements reflect neuronal activity (e.g. local averaging in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) voxels or sparse sampling in array recordings). The resulting generative model (BCM-MM) produces simulated measurements. To avoid having to fit the MM to predict each individual measurement channel of the brain-activity data, we compare the measured and predicted data at the level of summary statistics. We describe a novel particular implementation of this approach, called probabilistic representational similarity analysis (pRSA) with MMs, which uses representational dissimilarity matrices (RDMs) as the summary statistics. We validate this method by simulations of fMRI measurements (locally averaging voxels) based on a deep convolutional neural network for visual object recognition. Results indicate that the way the measurements sample the activity patterns strongly affects the apparent representational dissimilarities. However, modelling of the measurement process can account for these effects, and different BCMs remain distinguishable even under substantial noise. The results facilitate the production, logistics, purchasing and sales department to obtain information on positive satisfaction levels and areas that need change.   14. Alpha activity measurements in Anarak copper mine

    Alpha radiations in the ground arises from the decay of naturally occurring uranium and thorium, which are widely distributed in soils and rocks. According to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports, the highest of alpha activity is found in locations near copper mines. In this study, the amounts of natural activity of alpha emitters for 31 samples of surface soil of Talmesi Anarak mine, located in center of Iran, are measured by Nuclear Track method. Having virtually zero background and exposure time, are advantages of this method. After sampling, all of the 31 samples were transferred to laboratory to place CR-39 detectors vertically in them. In next step, CR-39 detectors were etched in NaOH 6 M, aqueous solution at 70 °C for 4 h. Then, number of tracks per area unit was counted by an optical microscope. The amounts of alpha activity were calculated in all samples and range of minimum 1.40E + 04 to maximum 3.03E + 05 Bq/kg .And also the activity of Th-232 and U-238 are measured by alpha-track method. Moreover “equivalent uranium” (eU) and “equivalent thorium” (eTh) by Hp-Ge detector, were calculated. - Highlights: ► We studied measuring the alpha activity in soils samples near copper mine by CR-39. ► According to experiments and mechanism of track formation, 2 formulas have introduced. ► We studied the accuracy of 2 formulas and present the optimal formula. ► Our results show these formulas are the same. ► Also we could calculate the concentration of U-238 and Th-232 by results of CR-39

  15. Measurement and release of low-level contaminated materials from nuclear power plants into environment

    Release of low-level contaminated solid materials originated from the operation or decommissioning of nuclear power plants into the environment for their recycling, reuse or liquidation is one of the main ways for the minimization of radioactive wastes production. Regulated measurement of contamination and quantitative determination of radionuclides in materials to be released are relatively complicated but manageable processes. AllDeco operates 2 measuring devices for materials release. For this purpose measuring chambers of RTM type are used for the determination of total gamma activity of radionuclides in materials. Activities of alpha and beta radionuclides are calculated by statistical results processing based on radionuclide vectors established in the laboratory for samples of similar materials. Possible spatial inhomogeneities of the contamination in measured materials can be identified by the devices software. The measurement of total gamma activity is completed by controlling spectrometric determination of present gamma radionuclides using NaI or Ge detectors. Limits for the release are measured and observed according to assigned accuracy for measuring chambers as authorized official measures. The stipulated reference levels are controlled by selective measurements of the surface alpha and beta activities and by the determination of the ratio of main gamma radionuclides. (authors)

    In the Atomic Energy Commission, about 1 GBq/ton of radioactivity intensity in total alpha nuclide has been investigated for an aimed value of a division at shallow underground disposal against low level TRU solid waste. In order to develop a measuring technique using passive neutron method responsible for the aimed value of the division, a measuring system is modelized to obtain neutron detection efficiency due to simulation calculation using continuous Monte Carlo code (MVP), and then a measuring equipment is produced according to the obtained result. As a result of obtaining space distribution of the neutron detection efficiency and detection sensitivity change due to matrix density and radiation source position within carton box, it could be confirmed for the simulation result to agree with the experimental result.     This paper proposes the water level measuring method based on the image,while the ruler used to indicate the water level is stained.The contamination of the ruler weakens or eliminates many features which are required for the image processing.However,the feature of the color difference between the ruler and the water surface are firmer on the environmental change compare to the other features.As the color differences are embossed,only the region of the ruler is limited to eliminate the noise,and the average image is produced by using several continuous frames.A histogram is then produced based on the height axis of the produced intensity average image.Local peaks and local valleys are detected,and the section between the peak and valley which have the greatest change is looked for.The valley point at this very moment is used to detect the water level.The detected water level is then converted to the actual water level by using the mapping table.The proposed method is compared to the ultrasonic based method to evaluate its accuracy and efficiency on the various contaminated environments.

    Groundwater contaminated with hexavalent chromium, strontium-90, and uranium discharges into the Columbia River along approximately 16 km (10 mi) of the shoreline. Various treatment systems have and will continue to be implemented to eliminate the impact of Hanford Site contamination to the river. To optimize the various remediation strategies, it is important to understand interactions between groundwater and the surface water of the Columbia River. An automated system to record water levels in aquifer sampling tubes installed in the hyporheic zone was designed and tested to (1) gain a more complete understanding of groundwater/river water interactions based on gaining and losing conditions ofthe Columbia River, (2) record and interpret data for consistent and defensible groundwater/surface water conceptual models that may be used to better predict subsurface contaminant fate and transport, and (3) evaluate the hydrodynamic influence of extraction wells in an expanded pump-and-treat system to optimize the treatment system. A system to measure water levels in small-diameter aquifer tubes was designed and tested in the laboratory and field. The system was configured to allow manual measurements to periodically calibrate the instrument and to permit aquifer tube sampling without removing the transducer tube. Manual measurements were collected with an e-tape designed and fabricated especially for this test. Results indicate that the transducer system accurately records groundwater levels in aquifer tubes. These data are being used to refine the conceptual and numeric models to better understand interactions in the hyporheic zone of the Columbia River and the adjacent river water and groundwater, and changes in hydrochemistry relative to groundwater flux as river water recharges the aquifer and then drains back out in response to changes in the river level.

    This work implements a noninvasive system that measures the movements caused by cardiac activity. It uses unobtrusive Electro-Mechanical Films (EMFi) on the seat and on the backrest of a regular chair. The system detects ballistocardiogram (BCG) and respiration movements. Real data was obtained from 54 volunteers. 19 of them were measured in the laboratory and 35 in a hospital waiting room. Using a BIOPAC acquisition system, the ECG was measured simultaneously to the BCG for comparison. Wavelet Transform (WT) is a better option than Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) for signal extraction and produces higher effective measurement time. In the laboratory, the best results are obtained on the seat. The correlation index was 0.9800 and the Bland-Altman limits of agreement were 0.7136 ± 4.3673 [BPM]. In the hospital waiting room, the best results are also from the seat sensor. The correlation index was 0.9840, and the limits of agreement were 0.4386 ± 3.5884 [BPM]. The system is able to measure BCG in an unobtrusive way and determine the cardiac frequency with high precision. It is simple to use, which means the system can easily be used in non-standard settings: resting in a chair or couch, at the gym, schools or in a hospital waiting room, as shown. PMID:26738057

    Inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) in microorganisms has been shown to reach quite high levels, with profound implications for many aspects of cellular metabolism. They have modified the method of Heinonen et al., developed for studies on E. coli and based on selective precipitation of PPi by added Ca/sup 2 +/ and F/sup -/, to measure PPi levels in S. cerevisiae. Cells were lysed in acidic medium containing known amounts of added /sup 32/PPi by vortexing with glass beads. Yields of isolated PPi were calculated on the basis of recovered radioactivity. Measurement of the protein content of the lysate allowed a correction to be made for variability in the efficiency of cell lysis. The results show a remarkable variation in PPi levels along the growth curve. For cells grown with aeration on 2% glucose, the peak value, corresponding to an internal concentration of at least 5mM, is attained in mid- to late-log phase. Concentrations of PPi in early-log phase are at least 10-fold lower.

While established learning analytics methods provide feedback that can aid learner evaluation of learning resources, the adequacy and reliability of these methods is questioned. Because engagement with online learning is different from other Web activity, it is important to establish pedagogically relevant measures that can aid the development of distinct, automated analysis systems. Content analysis is often used to examine online discussion in educational settings, but these instruments are rarely compared with each other which leads to uncertainty regarding their validity and reliability. In this study, participation in Massive Open Online Course (MOOC comment forums was evaluated using four different analytical approaches: the Digital Artefacts for Learning Engagement (DiAL-e framework, Bloom's Taxonomy, Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes (SOLO and Community of Inquiry (CoI. Results from this study indicate that different approaches to measuring cognitive activity are closely correlated and are distinct from typical interaction measures. This suggests that computational approaches to pedagogical analysis may provide useful insights into learning processes.

    Full Text Available On Boxing Day 2004, a severe tsunami was generated by a strong earthquake in Northern Sumatra causing a large number of casualties. At this time, neither an offshore buoy network was in place to measure tsunami waves, nor a system to disseminate tsunami warnings to local governmental entities. Since then, buoys have been developed by Indonesia and Germany, complemented by NOAA's Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART buoys, and have been moored offshore Sumatra and Java. The suite of sensors for offshore tsunami detection in Indonesia has been advanced by adding GPS technology for water level measurements.

    The usage of GPS buoys in tsunami warning systems is a relatively new approach. The concept of the German Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (GITEWS (Rudloff et al., 2009 combines GPS technology and ocean bottom pressure (OBP measurements. Especially for near-field installations where the seismic noise may deteriorate the OBP data, GPS-derived sea level heights provide additional information.

    The GPS buoy technology is precise enough to detect medium to large tsunamis of amplitudes larger than 10 cm. The analysis presented here suggests that for about 68% of the time, tsunamis larger than 5 cm may be detectable.

A disadvantage of this method is given by measuring errors caused by evaporation and/or degassing processes in vertical parts of these pulse lines. The error is caused by the decrease of the fluid density in the reference pipe, when a two-phase mixture appears. The present work aimed at the test of a novel differential pressure measuring system that eliminates the influence of density changes in the pulse lines. It is based on two differential pressure transducers, placed accurately at the elevation of the connecting nozzles. They are connected with the pressure vessel only by horizontal pipes. The vertical distance is bridged by a standpipe, the fluid of which is completely separated from the fluid in the vessel. Degassing respectively evaporation effects can therefore be completely excluded in the reference column of the new system. The method was tested at the pressurizer test facility of the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Goertlitz, IPM on three types of transients including a rapid pressure decrease similar to a loss-of-coolant transient. Traditional differential pressure systems as well as local void probes were used for comparison. The method has proven its advantages compared to the traditional hydrostatic level measurement method.   10. GPS water level measurements for Indonesia's Tsunami Early Warning System

    On Boxing Day 2004, a severe tsunami was generated by a strong earthquake in Northern Sumatra causing a large number of casualties. At this time, neither an offshore buoy network was in place to measure tsunami waves, nor a system to disseminate tsunami warnings to local governmental entities. Since then, buoys have been developed by Indonesia and Germany, complemented by NOAA's Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART) buoys, and have been moored offshore Sumatra and Java. The suite of sensors for offshore tsunami detection in Indonesia has been advanced by adding GPS technology for water level measurements. The usage of GPS buoys in tsunami warning systems is a relatively new approach. The concept of the German Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (GITEWS) (Rudloff et al., 2009) combines GPS technology and ocean bottom pressure (OBP) measurements. Especially for near-field installations where the seismic noise may deteriorate the OBP data, GPS-derived sea level heights provide additional information. The GPS buoy technology is precise enough to detect medium to large tsunamis of amplitudes larger than 10 cm. The analysis presented here suggests that for about 68% of the time, tsunamis larger than 5 cm may be detectable.

    Full Text Available An alternative method for distance measurement is presented, based on a radiometric approach to the image formation process. The proposed methodology uses images from an infrared emitting diode (IRED to estimate the distance between the camera and the IRED. Camera output grey-level intensities are a function of the accumulated image irradiance, which is also related by inverse distance square law to the distance between the camera and the IRED. Analyzing camera-IRED distance, magnitudes that affected image grey-level intensities, and therefore accumulated image irradiance, were integrated into a differential model which was calibrated and used for distance estimation over a 200 to 600 cm range.     Full Text Available Researches in the field of the labour market has allowed the identification of certain specific mechanisms for employment promotion; at present, on the Romanian labour market we find passive policies, concretised in financial aids paid to the unemployed, along with active policies, constituting the most efficient social protection activity addressed to the unemployed (they aim at counterbalancing the inefficiencies determined by the granting of financial allowances, help population to find a job by actions of information, professional training and contributing to the encouragement of the labour force mobility. The paper refers to some theoretical considerations related to the influence factors of employment stimulation, as well as to the unemployment – correlated adequate measures synapse. The applied research comprises the analysis of statistic documents; the method used is the case study, i.e. the activity of employment stimulation carried on by the County Agency for Employment Caraş-Severin, in the period 2004-2012. The conclusions highlight the impact of the activity of the institutions involved in the system of social protection and security within the labour market.

    Evaluating the activity of the complement system under conditions of altered thyroid hormone levels might help elucidate the role of complement in triggering autoimmune processes. Here, we investigated alternative pathway (AP) activity in male Wistar rats (180 ± 10 g) after altering their thyroid hormone levels by treatment with triiodothyronine (T3), propylthiouracil (PTU) or thyroidectomy. T3 and thyroxine (T4) levels were determined by chemiluminescence assays. Hemolytic assays were performed to evaluate the lytic activity of the AP. Factor B activity was evaluated using factor B-deficient serum. An anti-human factor B antibody was used to measure factor B levels in serum by radial immunodiffusion. T3 measurements in thyroidectomized animals or animals treated with PTU demonstrated a significant reduction in hormone levels compared to control. The results showed a reduction in AP lytic activity in rats treated with increasing amounts of T3 (1, 10, or 50 µg). Factor B activity was also decreased in the sera of hyperthyroid rats treated with 1 to 50 µg T3. Additionally, treating rats with 25 µg T3 significantly increased factor B levels in their sera (P < 0.01). In contrast, increased factor B concentration and activity (32%) were observed in hypothyroid rats. We conclude that alterations in thyroid hormone levels affect the activity of the AP and factor B, which may in turn affect the roles of AP and factor B in antibody production.

There is an urgent need for tools which have been validated for measuring diet and physical activity in nutritional studies in the developing world, but also a more urgent need for reference values for the total energy requirements of healthy elderly people. Regular physical activity reduces the likelihood to develop diseases that characterise the metabolic cardiovascular syndrome. With the purpose of estimating the energy requirements, a group of 48 elderly people aged 61-74 years living in a rural mountain community was submitted to a medical, epidemiological, dietary and biochemical study of the nutritional status. Glucose intolerance was diagnosed in 40% and arterial hypertension was present in 23 % of them. Ten subjects without signs or symptoms of the metabolic cardiovascular syndrome were submitted to a measurement of the total energy expenditure by the doubly labelled water method. PAL values of 2.13 and 1.77 were measured for men and women, values which were significantly higher that the recommended value of 1.51 for elderly subjects.     An apparatus to measure low level helium in a solid sample for neutron dosimetry in the practical use such as area monitoring in the long-term and reactor surveillance was reported. In our previous work, the helium atoms measurement system (HAMS) was developed. A sample was evaporated in the furnace and the released gas from the sample was analyzed with the mass spectrometer of the system to determine the amount of helium contained in it. The system has been improved to advance the lower helium measurement limit in a solid sample for its application to an area monitoring system. The mass of a solid is up to 100mg. Two important points should be considered to advance the lower limit. One was to produce a high quality vacuum in the system chamber for suppressing background gases during the sample measurement.     Methods to measure low concentrations of tritium and radiocarbon in wine and champagne, respectively, have been tested by using liquid scintillation counting after chemical sample processing. It could be shown that tritium activity was too low to be measured by our standard low-level liquid scintillation counter, WALLAC Guardian 1414. Positive results could be achieved when using a WALLAC Quantulus. The methods will be established as standard methods to detect forgeries and to improve consumer safety.

With the purpose to achieve the statistically consistent results for the activity levels of 0.1Bq/L for radon (radium) activity in water, present study used modified experimental protocol which consists of: 1) water samples were stored in hermetically sealed glass vials of 250mL during 30 days to guarantee that Rn-222 will reach the secular equilibrium; 2) the measurements were performed using WAT250 protocol of RAD7 detector; 3) with an aim to decrease the background, the cleaning (activated carbon filter) and drying (DRIERITE desiccant) vessels, which have a function to retain the radioactive decay product of Rn-222 and humidity, were connected to a closed air loop of RAD7 permanently by means of valves and taps, which gave a possibility to repeat all sequence of measurements (including background evaluation) three or four times without to open the air loop and disconnect the sample vial with water. Each water sample was submitted to such measurements two or three times. Obtained results presented the level of Ra-226 activity in studied samples of bottled mineral water that varied from 0.007 ± 0.061 Bq/L to 0.145 ± 0.049 Bq/L, which is below the limit of 0,5 Bq/L established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2011 for drinking water.     Full Text Available INTRODUCTION: The angiogenic proteins angiopoietin (Ang-1, Ang-2 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF are regulators of endothelial inflammation and integrity. Since platelets store large amounts of Ang-1 and VEGF, measurement of circulation levels of these proteins is sensitive to platelet number, in vivo platelet activation and inadvertent platelet activation during blood processing. We studied plasma Ang-1, Ang-2 and VEGF levels in malaria patients, taking the necessary precautions to avoid ex vivo platelet activation, and related plasma levels to platelet count and the soluble platelet activation markers P-selectin and CXCL7. METHODS: Plasma levels of Ang-1, Ang-2, VEGF, P-selectin and CXCL7 were measured in CTAD plasma, minimizing ex vivo platelet activation, in 27 patients with febrile Plasmodium falciparum malaria at presentation and day 2 and 5 of treatment and in 25 healthy controls. RESULTS: Levels of Ang-1, Ang-2 and VEGF were higher at day 0 in malaria patients compared to healthy controls. Ang-2 levels, which is a marker of endothelial activation, decreased after start of antimalarial treatment. In contrast, Ang-1 and VEGF plasma levels increased and this corresponded with the increase in platelet number. Soluble P-selectin and CXCL7 levels followed the same trend as Ang-1 and VEGF levels. Plasma levels of these four proteins correlated strongly in malaria patients, but only moderately in controls. CONCLUSION: In contrast to previous studies, we found elevated plasma levels of Ang-1 and VEGF in patients with malaria resulting from in vivo platelet activation. Ang-1 release from platelets may be important to dampen the disturbing effects of Ang-2 on the endothelium. Evaluation of plasma levels of these angiogenic proteins requires close adherence to a stringent protocol to minimize ex vivo platelet activation.

  6. Serum Renalase Levels Correlate with Disease Activity in Lupus Nephritis.

    Full Text Available Lupus nephritis (LN is among the most serious complications of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE, which causes significant morbidity and mortality. Renalase is a novel, kidney-secreted cytokine-like protein that promotes cell survival. Here, we aimed to investigate the relationship of serum renalase levels with LN and its role in the disease progression of LN.For this cross-sectional study, 67 LN patients and 35 healthy controls were enrolled. Seventeen active LN patients who received standard therapies were followed up for six months. Disease activity was determined by the SLE Disease Activity-2000 (SLEDAI-2K scoring system and serum renalase amounts were determined by ELISA. Predictive value of renalase for disease activity was assessed. Furthermore, the expression of renalase in the kidneys of patients and macrophage infiltration was assessed by immunohistochemistry.Serum renalase amounts were significantly higher in LN patients than in healthy controls. Moreover, patients with proliferative LN had more elevated serum renalase levels than Class V LN patients. In proliferative LN patients, serum renalase levels were significantly higher in patients with active LN than those with inactive LN. Serum renalase levels were positively correlated with SLEDAI-2K, 24-h urine protein excretion, ds-DNA and ESR but inversely correlated with serum albumin and C3. Renalase amounts decreased significantly after six-months of standard therapy. The performance of renalase as a marker for diagnosis of active LN was 0.906 with a cutoff value of 66.67 μg/ml. We also observed that the amount of renalase was significantly higher in glomerular of proliferative LN along with the co-expression of macrophages.Serum renalase levels were correlated with disease activity in LN.     Children learn to fit into society through living in a group, and it's greatly influenced by their friend relations. Although preschool teachers need to observe them to assist in the growth of children's social progress and support the development each child's personality, only experienced teachers can watch over children while providing high-quality guidance. To resolve the problem, this paper proposes a mathematical and objective method that assists teachers with observation. It uses numerical data of activity level recorded by pedometers, and we make tree diagram called dendrogram based on hierarchical clustering with recorded activity level. Also, we calculate children's ``breadth'' and ``depth'' of friend relations by using more than one dendrogram. When we record children's activity level in a certain kindergarten for two months and evaluated the proposed method, the results usually coincide with remarks of teachers about the children.

Therefore, we studied the activities of erythrocyte antioxidant enzymes such as Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Glutathione Peroxidase (GSH-Px) and Catalase (CAT), and the level of erythrocyte Glutathione (GSH), thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) and the level of urine floride in high floride exposed people (children, adult and elderly). The activities of SOD, GSH-Px and CAT and the level of GSH, TBARS and urine floride were higher in 3.8 mg/L floride exposed children (Group II) than 0.8 mg/L floride exposed control children (Group I) (p0.05). The activities of SOD, GSH-Px and CAT were lower and the levels of TBARS and urine floride were higher in 3.8 mg/L floride exposed elderly people (Group VI) than 0.8 mg/L floride exposed control elderly people (Group V) (p0.05). As a result we thought that increased SOD, GSH-Px and CAT activities in floride exposed children and adult people, decreased activities of these enzymes in floride exposed elderly people, and increased TBARS in all groups may indicate floride caused oxidative damage in erythrocytes.     Full Text Available This study investigated the association between physical activity facilities at childcare (e.g., play equipment and physical activity of 2- and 3-year olds. Observations of physical activity intensity were performed among 175 children at 9 childcare centers in The Netherlands, using the OSRAC-P. The physical activity facilities were assessed for indoors and outdoors separately, using the EPAO instrument. Regular (single-level multivariate and multilevel linear regression analyses examined the association of the facilities and child characteristics (age and sex with children's activity levels. Various physical activity facilities were available in all childcare centers (e.g., balls. Riding toys and a small playing area were associated with lower indoor physical activity levels. Outdoor physical activity levels were positively associated with the availability of portable jumping equipment and the presence of a structured track on the playground. Portable slides, fixed swinging equipment, and sandboxes were negatively associated with outdoor activity levels. In addition, the 3-year old children were more active outdoors than the 2-year olds. In conclusion, not all physical activity facilities at childcare were indeed positively associated with children's activity levels. The current findings provide concrete leads for childcare providers regarding which factors they can improve in the physical environment to facilitate children's physical activity.

    Full Text Available Levels of erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD activitiy in a sample of Japanese people were determined. Blood samples were taken from new-born infants, preschool children, young and old people who had no apparent diseases and also from three anemic patients. Erythrocyte SOD activities in different age groups had a nearly normal distribution. Females had slightly lower activities than males, although the difference was statistically insignificant. The distributions of SOD activities were 12.6 +/- 2.7 (m +/- SD unit/mg Hb in young people and 11.4 +/- 3.0 in old people, indicating that erythrocyte SOD activity falls with aging. Because of low concentration of hemoglobin, SOD activities of old people expressed as unit/ml blood were much lower than in young people. Three anemic patients had slightly lower SOD activity.

  15. Measurement of water level, electrical conductivity, and sediment surface level using time domain reflectometry

    Time domain reflectometry (TDR) has been drawing a lot more attention as a way to identify the interfaces in between different dielectric media. To monitor water level (hsub(w)) with electrical conductivity (omegasub(w)) and sediment surface level (hsub(sed)) in river by applying TDR, we developed a mathematical model to evaluate these properties and verified its effectiveness by measuring the dielectric constant of conductive fluid media and a soil material (sand) using TDR probes with different lengths. Although the determination of (hsub(w)) in extremely high-conductive media was technically incompleted, we could successfully determine (hsub(w)), (omegasub(w)), and hsub(sed) with a probe in moderate-conductive media. Judging from the relatively good agreement between properties evaluated from the model and observed data, we concluded the TDR measurement could be useful to evaluate hsub(w), omegasub(w), and hsub(sed) with sufficient accuracy for practical use within an appropriate conductive range.     For the proper medical treatment of wounds containing radioactive materials, the physician has to know not only type and amount of activity, but also the location and extent as exactly as possible. The necessary accuracy of detection and measurement can only be achieved with special radiation detectors. They must be very small, insensitive to light and humidity, mechanically robust, electrically safe, and must endure heating to about 200°C for sterilizing purposes. The paper discusses several possibilities of building such detectors, shows the design and construction of some instruments developed and used at the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Centre, and gives a comparison of the performance of the different types of counters.   2. Improvement of a new portable monitor for measuring radioactivity levels

    Using a silicon photodiode as a sensor, the author has developed a new portable monitor for clinical use to measure irradiation from an inner organ through the body surface after the administration of radiopharmaceutical agent. The monitor can record the time course of radioactivity and can be assessed in the outpatient clinic. The total weight of this monitor is 660 g: the detector 70 g, the recorder 295 g, and the battery 295 g. In the present study, the monitor was utilized to measure and record the radioactivity in the bladder content of a patient who had been given Tc-99m methylene-diphosphonate for bone scintigraphy. The detector probe was placed on the abdomen over the bladder and fixed with adhesive tape. The recorder and battery were carried in a small backpack. The correlation between the radioactivity level in the urinary excretion and the count rate estimated by the monitor on the wall of urinary bladder was investigated. The average time to the first urinary excretion was made approximately 2 hr after the administration of radiopharmaceutical agent. The radioactivity count from the bladder reached the maximum level after approximately 2-3 hr, and subsequently decreased. The radioactivity in urine when excreted at 1 hr after administration was at 85% of that when excreted at 2 hr. In conclusion, the absorbed dosage in the bladder could be significantly reduced when the patients urinate at 1 hr after the administration of radiopharmaceutical agent. The newly developed portable monitor was adaptable to determine the radioactivity of inner organs directly from the outside of the body surface, and is effective in clinical management for excretion of clinical radioactive agents.   3. Neutron spectra unfolding from measured detector activations

    Our knowledge of the neutron spectrum in irradiation facilities essentially rests on the calculation and on the unfolding resp. adjustment based on measured activations, more generally said reactions rates, since the other direct or indirect experimental methods here frequently are not applicable on account of technical reasons. In this situation the neutronic calculation by no means renders superfluous the unfolding because the measurements can confirm or possibly correct resp. improve the calculational results. The FORTRAN code SAND-MX2 is a contribution of the KFA to the international repertoire of unfolding codes. With regard to its contents it is one of the newer versions of the original code SAND-II which are presently used as SAND-II also in the laboratories of several countries as especially practice related unfolding calculational methods. This report may serve as an instruction manual for the routinely neutron spectrum unfolding by means of the code SAND-MX2. It appeared to us not to be superfluous in addition to the above mentioned aim also to give a general view of the present situation in unfolding technique and to touch shortly the other advanced methods because we believed thereby also to give a better understanding of the characteristic features of our programme. In some laboratories several of the here described calculational programmes are alternatively in current use for the purpose of giving a greater confidence to the result of the neutron spectrum unfolding in question.     The human cortex is highly folded to allow for a massive expansion of surface area. Notably, the thickness of the cortex strongly depends on cortical topology, with gyral cortex sometimes twice as thick as sulcal cortex. We recently demonstrated that global differences in thickness between gyral and sulcal cortex continue to evolve throughout adolescence. However, human cortical development is spatially heterogeneous, and global comparisons lack power to detect localized differences in development or psychopathology. Here we extend previous work by proposing a new measure - local cortical coupling - that is sensitive to differences in the localized topological relationship between cortical thickness and sulcal depth. After estimation, subject-level coupling maps can be analyzed using standard neuroimaging analysis tools. Capitalizing on a large cross-sectional sample (n=932) of youth imaged as part of the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort, we demonstrate that local coupling is spatially heterogeneous and exhibits nonlinear development-related trajectories. Moreover, we uncover sex differences in coupling that indicate divergent patterns of cortical topology. Developmental changes and sex differences in coupling support its potential as a neuroimaging phenotype for investigating neuropsychiatric disorders that are increasingly conceptualized as disorders of brain development.     Full Text Available Even in absence of sensory stimuli cortical networks exhibit complex, self-organized activity patterns. While the function of those spontaneous patterns of activation remains poorly understood, recent studies both in vivo and in vitro have demonstrated that neocortical neurons activate in a surprisingly similar sequential order both spontaneously and following input into cortex. For example, neurons that tend to fire earlier within spontaneous bursts of activity also fire earlier than other neurons in response to sensory stimuli. These 'default patterns' can last hundreds of milliseconds and are strongly conserved under a variety of conditions. In this paper we will review recent evidence for these default patterns at the local cortical level. We speculate that cortical architecture imposes common constraints on spontaneous and evoked activity flow, which result in the similarity of the patterns.

The aim of this study was to validate the MOSPA (Monica Optional Study of Physical Activity questionnaire which was developed for the WHO-Monitoring trends and determinants of cardiovasculr disease (MONICA study sites. Methods The MOSPA questionnaire assesses energy expendtiture (EE related to physical activity (employment, household work, transportation, and leisure time over a one year period. This questionnaire has been described in the manuscript as the long term (LT questionnaire. An adapted short term (ST 5 day questionnaire was developed to assess convergent validity. Questionnaire data were compared with physical activity EE estimates from a Caltrac accelerometer and with body composition measures (height, weight and bioelectrical impedance in 50 women from the Aga Khan University (AKU hospital antenatal clinics, Pakistan. Other forms of EE i.e. resting EE and thermic effect of food were not assessd in this study. Results Subjects were aged 26 ± 3.8 years and were 16.1 ± 6.7 weeks pregnant. Their average weight was 58.8 ± 10.7 Kg. The average EE/day assessed by the Caltrac accelerometer, was 224 kcal and by MOSPA LT questionnaire it was 404 kcal. The questionnaires and Caltrac data were reasonably well correlated: r = 0.51 and r = 0.60 (P Conclusion The MOSPA questionnaire is useful in assessing physical activity levels in a sedentary population over a one year period.

    In 2014, nursing faculty conducted a study with undergraduate nursing students on their satisfaction, confidence, and educational practice levels, as it related to simulation activities throughout the curriculum. The study was a voluntary survey conducted on junior and senior year nursing students. It consisted of 30 items based on the Student Satisfaction and Self-Confidence in Learning and the Educational Practices Questionnaire (Jeffries, 2012). Mean averages were obtained for each of the 30 items from both groups and were compared using T scores for unpaired means. The results showed that 8 of the items had a 95% confidence level and when combined the items were significant for p confidence and active learning. Based on these findings, it can be assumed that repeated simulation experiences can lead to an increase in student confidence and active learning. PMID:26599594

Measurement of the VEGF level may be adversely affected by premeasurement variables, such as freezing and delay, in sample analysis. We aim to evaluate the effect of storage and delayed measurement of human aqueous VEGF levels in these conditions.Methods: Aqueous samples collected from patients receiving intravitreal injection of bevacizumab for various retinal diseases were divided into two groups. In Group 1, the VEGF levels were analyzed on the same day; in Group 2, the VEGF levels were analyzed after 21 days of freezer storage (-80°C using immunobead assay. Statistical comparison using a paired t-test was performed between the two groups.Results: Thirty-one aqueous humor samples were collected, and the VEGF concentration for fresh samples was 7.8 ± 5.9 pg/mL (mean ± SD compared to 6.5 ± 6.0 pg/mL in frozen samples, resulting in a statistically significant difference (P = 0.03.Conclusions: Accurate measurement of the VEGF level is a vital component of clinical decision-making.   11. Comparison of doubly labeled water with respirometry at low- and high-activity levels

    In previous studies the doubly labeled water method for measuring energy expenditure in free-living humans has been validated against respirometry under sedentary conditions. In the present investigation, energy expenditure is measured simultaneously with doubly labeled water and respirometry at low- and high-activity levels. Over 6 days, five subjects were measured doing mainly sedentary activities like desk work; their average daily metabolic rate was 1.40 +/- 0.09 (SD) times sleeping metabolic rate. Four subjects were measured twice over 3.5 days, including 2 days with heavy bicycle ergometer work, resulting in an average daily metabolic rate of 2.61 +/- 0.25 (SD) times sleeping metabolic rate. At the low-activity level, energy expenditures from the doubly labeled water method were on the average 1.4 +/- 3.9% (SD) larger than those from respirometry. At the high-activity level, the doubly labeled water method yielded values that were 1.0 +/- 7.0% (SD) lower than those from respirometry. Results demonstrate the utility of the doubly labeled water method for the determination of energy expenditure in the range of activity levels in daily life

    Full Text Available Background: postnatal depression (PND is defined as a psychological mood disorder that occurs in a mother within six weeks of her giving birth. It refers to an episode that causes mood disturbance and it could begin in, or extend into, the postpartum period. It is thought to have a high impact upon the mother’s health as well as the family’s functioning and the child’s development. Socio-demographic, psych-social, and physical activity factors may all contribute to postpartum mood and ability to cope with responsibilities. The primary aim of this study was to determine which of these factors predicted PND in postpartum women. A secondary aim was to identify the socio-demographic and psycho-social predictors of physical activity in postpartum women . Methods: The study used a cross-sectional correlational design. A sample of 150 postpartum women was sent a package of six standardised questionnaires. Results: There was no association between physical activity and PND; however, older mothers, mothers of younger children, mothers who are less reluctant to ask for help, and mothers who are more satisfied with the help they get experience lower levels of PND. Mothers of older babies, mothers with more children, and less educated mothers are more likely to engage in caregiving activities, whereas mothers with fewer children and higher levels of partner support are more likely to engage in occupational activities. None of the socio-demographic factors or any of the parenting factors predicted levels of sporting activity.

    Full Text Available The Lambertian Equivalent Reflection (LER produced by satellite-carried instruments is used to determine cloud effects on ground level UltraViolet (UV radiation. The focus is on data use from consecutive operating instruments: the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometers (TOMS flown on Nimbus 7 from 1979 to 1992, TOMS on Earth Probe from 1996 to 2005, and the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI flown on Aura since 2004. The LER data produced by TOMS on Earth Probe is only included until 2002. The possibility to use the Radiative Cloud Fraction (RCF-product of OMI is also investigated. A comparison is made with cloud effects inferred from ground-based pyranometer measurements at over 83 World Radiation Data Centre stations. Modelled UV irradiances utilizing LER data are compared with measurements of UV irradiances at eight European low elevation stations. The LER data set of the two TOMS instruments shows a consistent agreement, and the required corrections are of low percentage i.e. 2–3%. In contrast, the LER data of OMI requires correction of 7–10%, and a solar angle dependency therein is more pronounced. These corrections were inferred from a comparison with pyranometer data, and tested using the UV measurements. The RCF product of OMI requires a large correction but can then be implemented as a cloud effect proxy. However, a major drawback of RCF is the large number of clipped data, i.e. 18%, and results are not better than those obtained with the corrected LER product of OMI. The average reduction of UV radiation due to clouds for all sites together indicate a small trend: a diminishing cloudiness, in line with ground-based UV observations. Uncorrected implementation of LER would have indicated the opposite. An optimal field of view of 1.25° was established for LER data to calculate UV radiations levels. The corresponding area can be traversed within 5–7 h at the average wind speeds found for the West European continent.

    The possibility of detecting very low levels of gamma radiation (0.1 mBq/kg) has allowed scientists to devise a new technique for dating wines. This technique is based on the detection of very low concentrations of 137Cs that comes from atmospheric nuclear tests and from Chernobyl accident.     Objectives. The aim of the study was to evaluate the activity of cathepsin B, collagenases, trypsin, and plasmin and concentration of cystatin C in serum of healthy pregnant women in peripartum period. Study Design. The study group included 45 women in uncomplicated pregnancies. Blood samples were collected in four time points. Enzyme activity was measured by spectrofluorometric method. The level of cystatin C was measured using immunonephelometric method. Results. Mean activity of cathepsin B and the level of serum cystatin C were significantly higher in the study group. Collagenase activity was significantly lower in the study group than the control group. No differences in collagenase, plasmin, and trypsin activity on each day of the peripartum period were found. Conclusion. High activity of cathepsin B and increased level of cystatin C are typical for women in late pregnancy. Those levels significantly decrease after delivery which can be associated with potential role of those markers in placental separation. The insignificant changes of cystatin C level in the peripartum period seem to exclude the possibility of using cystatin C as a marker for renal insufficiency in the peripartum period but additional research is necessary to investigate the matter further.   3. Measurements of radon concentration levels in drinking water at urban area of Curitiba, Brazil

    Current work presents the results of more than 100 measurements of 222Rn activity in drinking water collected at artesian bores at Curitiba region during the period of 2008 - 2009. The measurements were performed at the Laboratory of Applied Nuclear Physics of the Federal University of Technology in cooperation with the Nuclear Technology Development Center (CDTN) of Brazilian Nuclear Energy Committee (CNEN). Experimental setup was based on the Professional Radon Monitor (ALPHA GUARD) connected to specific kit of glass vessels Aqua KIT through the air pump. The equipment was adjusted with air flow of 0.5 L/min. The 222Rn concentration levels were detected and analyzed by the computer every 10 minutes using the software DataEXPERT by GENITRON Instruments. Collected average levels of 222Rn concentration were processed taking into account the volume of water sample and its temperature, atmospheric pressure and the total volume of the air in the vessels. Collected samples of water presented the average 222Rn activity about 57.70 Bq/L which is almost 5 times more than maximum level of 11.1 Bq/L recommended by the USEPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency). It has to be noted that many artesian drillings presented the radon activity in the range of 100 - 200 Bq/L.   5. Total daily energy expenditure and activity level in anorexia nervosa.

    Clinical reports consistently comment on high physical activity for anorexia nervosa patients but provide few quantitative measurements. To assess activity, total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) by doubly labeled water, basal metabolic rate (BMR), and thermic effect of meals (TEM) were measured in six female outpatients with anorexia nervosa (67% of ideal body weight) and age-, sex-, and height-matched to six control subjects. Anorexia nervosa patients expended more energy as physical activity than did control subjects [0.084 +/- 0.012 vs 0.044 +/- 0.008 MJ/kg body wt, respectively (20.1 +/- 3.0 vs 10.5 +/- 1.9 kcal/kg body wt, respectively), P less than 0.04], although they had a lower BMR [4.17 +/- 0.37 vs 5.52 +/- 0.15 MJ/d, respectively (997 +/- 89 vs 1319 +/- 37 kcal/d, respectively), P less than 0.01]. TDEE and TEM were similar in both groups. There was a reduction in serum triiodothyronine (T3; 1.20 +/- 0.15 vs 2.04 +/- 0.13 nmol/L, respectively; P less than 0.003) and a slight reduction in serum thyroxine (T4); reverse T3, thyrotropin, free T4, serum cortisol, and adrenocorticotropin values were normal. BMR correlated with total body weight and fat-free mass. These results provide quantitative evidence for increased physical activity in anorexia nervosa despite profound underweight and hypometabolism. PMID:1850575

    Full Text Available A system for a high precision multi target level measurement based on guided microwave pulses is presented. A wide-band technique based on time-domain reflectometry (TDR in combination with a TEM-waveguide as the probe fulfils the requirements of mm-precision level measurements in tanks. The coaxial waveguide provides very low dispersion for wide-band signals. Inside the coaxial waveguide the different fluids with their specific dielectric constants influence the waveguide’s characteristic impedance, so that reflections take place at each discontinuity and separating layer respectively. A second very important requirement of the system is a high resolution. Thin layers (< 10 mm should be measured reliably. For that reason the pulse width must be sufficiently small. In this case a pulse width about 100 ps is suitable. It is obvious, that a high bandwidth of the whole system is necessary to provide the precision and the resolution. One further requirement is a nearly jitter free generation of two pulse trains with slightly different pulse repetition rates. These pulse trains are used for sequential sampling. The following analog to digital conversion of the received signal occurs at a relatively slow rate, in order to allow an A/D conversion with a high resolution.

    Actigraphs and parent and observer ratings were used to explore genetic influences on continuity and change in activity level (AL) in early childhood. Over 300 pairs of twins wore actigraphs for a 48-hour period in the home and laboratory at ages 2 and 3.
