    Pipelines, fuel storage tanks and other metallic structures are in permanent contact and exposed to different types of soils, of horizons or layers, or of soil aggressiveness. This interaction may cause expressive damages to the environment and to the planned work. Contamination may occur due to leakage of stored products, splitting during transportation, accidents caused by pipelines without extensive maintenance. The result of these accidents could be, among others, some financial losses. In order to recognize the dynamic interactions between metallic surfaces and the environment it is crucial to have preventive actions and to develop better-applied materials. API steel 5L X70 has been used in structures of low and high pressure with high mechanical strength and corrosion and, even so, it is susceptible to etching corrosion since it is in contact with different environments from mangrove regions to industrial environments. The present case evaluated the role of 5L X70 API steel in contact with different soil horizons representative of the Brazilian soil. This investigation correlated chemical species with solute ions in soil solution, secondary and primary phase minerals besides physical and chemical characteristics as pH, electric conductivity, total dissolved solids, among others, to the results of corrosion resistance and ways of corrosion. The evaluation was carried out using x-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, total reflection x-ray fluorescence, fuel injection flow besides texture and gravimetric analyses to soil characterization and mineralogy, identification of corrosion products, soil solution analyses, evaluation of tested materials and classification of ways and types of corrosion. This was an attempt to integrate the data to a better understanding of the process involving reagents and products.     The materials that stand in the manufacture of steel pipes are called API, that should have, high mechanical resistance, high corrosion resistance, high fatigue resistance, good weldability, and other properties. Thus, the purpose of this project was to evaluate the microstructure and hardness of welded joints by the HF/ERW process of API 5L X70 steel pipes. The microstructural analysis was performed using a surface finish with grit sizes from 220 to 25 {mu}m e polishing with diamond paste from 9 {mu}m to 0.05 {mu}m; the revelation was made with 3% Nital attack. The Vickers hardness was performed across the welded joint by 33 points to indentation. The results were: 80.5 {+-} 3.4% of ferrite and 19.5 {+-} 3.4% of perlite for microanalysis. As for hardness, the values were: 215.69 HV10 for weld line, 218.65 HV10 for ZTA and 218.95 HV10 for base metal. (author)

    The corrosion process allied to the fatigue, due to repetitive efforts of several natures, is the main responsible for the damages in pipeline and offshore structures that results in the appears of located faults, and by the way can results in leaks and financial and environmental loss. This phenomenon calls corrosion-fatigue, however, it is very complex, and mainly, in what it concerns the form as this it develops in the structure. The objective of this work is to present some results of experimental fatigue tests and corrosion-fatigue accomplished with specimen that the material originated a pipeline steel API 5L X60. The tests developed in a machine which could test until 12 specimens per time. For test of corrosion-fatigue was used a cell-of-corrosion especially projected, in this way simulated an aggressive environmental condition in a corrosion conditions. With the results of tests, was possible estimate the fatigue limits of the specimen when submitted to the repeated flexing, and compare it with evaluate corrosion-fatigue graphs, that as the literature comes moved down of the curve, in relation to the fatigue curve.     This study had as objective to evaluate the microstructure and microhardness of API 5L X80 steel welded joints, used for pipelines to transport oil and gas, using the Shield Metal Arc Welding process with pre- heating temperature of 200 deg C and 400 deg C and the AWS E8010G electrode as filler metal. For this, besides the microhardness of the welded joint, the weld metals percentiles of micro-constituents and of columnar and regenerated grains and the medium size and extension of the heat affected zone were evaluated. The percentage of acicular ferrite in weld metal ranged from 13% to 33% which generated values of microhardness from 114 HV to 309 HV. (author)

    Full Text Available Se ha determinado el comportamiento mecánico de los aceros API 5L grados X60 y X80, fragilizados por hidrógeno ambiental y por hidrógeno interno. El potencial y la densidad de corriente para la generación del hidrógeno fueron determinados por polarización potenciodinámica, y el tiempo de saturación estimado a partir de datos de difusividad y solubilidad obtenidos en ensayos de permeación con una célula electroquímica. La carga de hidrógeno para reproducir las condiciones de la fragilización por hidrógeno ambiental y fragilización por hidrógeno interno fue realizada generando un gradiente de concentración para el primer caso, y generando gradientes de concentración y de tensiones para el segundo. Luego de los ensayos de tracción se verificò que, en las condiciones definidas en este trabajo, el modo de fractura en ambos tipos de fragilización fue predominantemente dúctil. Ademàs, los dos aceros mostraron una susceptibilidad baja o moderada a la fragilización por hidrógeno ambiental, no siendo susceptibles a la fragilización por hidrógeno interno.The mechanical behavior of the API 5L X60 and X80 grade steels under environmental hydrogen embrittlement effect and internal hydrogen embrittlement effect was determined. The potential and current density for hydrogen generation were determined by potentiodynamic polarization. The saturation time was estimated from diffusivity and solubility data, obtained from permeation tests with an electrochemical cell. The hydrogen charge to reproduce the conditions of the environmental hydrogen embrittlement and the internal hydrogen embrittlement was performed by generating a concentration gradient in the first case, and a concentration and stress gradients in the second case. After the tensile tests it was verified that in the defined tests conditions, the fracture mode in both types of embrittlement was predominantly ductile.     The use of line pipes API 5L Grade X80, at the point of view of designer allows: reduction of wall thickness and pipe weight or increase of design pressure. In the pipeline construction point of view, the use of line pipes API 5L Grade X80 provide some advantages, however some difficulties must be expected in several stages of the construction and assembly. The implications in cost, productivity, inspection and integrity, with the application of these high resistance steels, complying with PETROBRAS Standard N - 464 Construcao, Montagem e Condicionamento de Dutos Terrestres (Rev. H - 2004 Dec) and the experience consolidated in pipelines construction abroad were presented. At the design stage, a comparison between pipelines designed using API 5L-X70 and API 5L-X80 was carried out approaching the aspects of variation of thickness, pressure design and design factor. An evaluation of the expected gains when choosing API 5L Grade X80 steels were done, regarding reduction of costs and pipe weight. Regarding API 5L-X80 pipe fabrication, the obtained results were reported, proving that this aspect was already overcome, showing the viability of its production in Brazil. Difficulties were detected regarding construction and assembly stage and showing the need of revision of PETROBRAS standard N-464. (author)

    High strength pipes can be manufactured with excellency in dimensional tolerances, rapidity and efficiency through HFIW process (High Frequency Induction Welding). API 5L 6 5/8 x 0,374 in pipes were made of thin, hot rolled and coiled plates with dimensional 9,300 x 1.040,0 x 140.000 mm. Mechanical tests, chemical and microstructural analysis were performed. For the microstructural analysis, ferrite and perlitic structure were detected. All the results obtained are according to API 5L, 44{sup th} edition, 2008 for the grade API 5L X70 PSL2 Offshore.   13. Corrosive effect of oil's accompanying water polluted with H2S over steel (API 5L X-52)

    The corrosion from the steel to the carbon in the sale oil pipage conduction, is a serious problem, due to the material and economical looses they cause, damaging even in some cases the productive field. The purpose of this study is to determine the aggressiveness of the oil's water layer, polluted with H2S(g) , over the steel of pipelines' construction (API 5L X-52), taking into account the temperature variations which take place during the transportation of the oil, using the electrochemical techniques of polarisation resistance (LPR) and electrochemical noise. It is pretended to determine the velocity of steel corrosion in the oil's water layer polluted with H2S through electrochemical techniques. It was shown that the temperature increases and the concentration of H2S to 500 ppm in the oil's accompanying water emphasizes the corrosion phenomenon experienced by the steel (9, 188 0 mm/year to 70℃).The results of the electrochemical noise spectrums and the values of the localisation ?s index calculated, shown the presence of corrosion on the steel surface (API 5L X-52).This result was complemented through optic Microscopy which permits to corroborate the poor adherence of the sulphur layers deposited on the metal that increase the appearance of events found with the temperature increase and the concentration of H2S in the environment studied

    Full Text Available Phase transformations in API 5L X80 steel were studied in different thermomechanical sequences with a view to increasing the fracture toughness of this steel. Dilatometry tests performed on the quenched steel detected a phase transformation occurred, during heating, in the temperature range 593-618 K. This phase transformation was identified as the dissolution of M-A islands. Based on preliminary dilatometric tests, ten thermal and thermomechanical treatments were performed on X80 steel samples. Initially, the material was hot rolled and quenched and only quenched. On the material without deformation, aging was also performed at temperatures of 603, 673, 723, 773, 823 and 873 K. These treatments resulted in the formation of the acicular ferrite constituent, among others. Tensile tests showed that the aging treatments produced reductions in yield strength and increases in the elongation and toughness of X80 steel. All the treatments resulted in an increase in the tensile strength of steel.

    Full Text Available Se determina el comportamiento mecánico de laminaciones simples y escalonadas modeladas por elementos finitos en condiciones no lineales de esfuerzo-deformación, para comprender la secuencia de la interacción de los campos de esfuerzos en los extremos de la grietas. Se estableció una matriz de simulación variando la extensión circunferencial de las laminaciones, con espesor del tubo de 610mm de diámetro, con separación vertical y horizontal para el caso de laminaciones escalonadas. Se determino la función de distribución de esfuerzos en la región de las laminaciones en función de la presión en la grieta y en el tubo. Se estableció la presión que origina alcanzar la cedencia y resistencia ultima del material API5L X52, determinando que las laminaciones simples cuya extensión circunferencial va de 24 a 127 mm, soportan 50% más de presión de cedencia que las laminaciones escalonadas, y el 100% más de presión máxima permisible. Basados en la graficas presión versus radio de las laminaciones se concluye que las laminaciones no coplanares representan mayor riesgo de agrietamiento en una tubería.The mechanical behavior of the coplanar and non coplanar laminations by finite element using non lineal material conditions was determined, with the purpose of knowing the interaction sequence of the stress fields in the crack tips. The analysis includes a matrix simulation considering the circumferential length lamination, wall thickness of the pipe 610mm diameter, with vertical and horizontal distance for non coplanar laminations. The stress distribution in the laminations regions as a function of the internal pressures in the cracks and pipe were determined. The simulations done allowed defining the yield and the strength pressure that reach the mechanical properties of the API 5L X52.     According to the reflection theory to ultrasonic testing reflection signal of several reference specimens specified in API SPEC 5L/ISO3183, this paper pointed out the respective reflection characteristics, and conducted analysis in conjunction with acceptance criteria. In this study, SRB colonies were isolated from the soil in suspected areas near the natural gas transmission pipeline in Malaysia. The effects of ATCC 7757 and consortium of isolated SRB upon corrosion on API 5L X-70 carbon steel coupon were investigated using a weight loss method, an open circuit potential method (OCP, and a potentiodynamic polarization curves method in anaerobic conditions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS were then used to determine the corrosion morphology in verifying the SRB activity and corrosion products formation. Results from the study show that the corrosion rate (CR of weight loss method for the isolated SRB is recorded as 0.2017 mm/yr compared to 0.2530 mm/yr for ATCC 7757. The Tafel plot recorded the corrosion rate of 0.3290 mm/yr for Sg. Ular SRB and 0.2500 mm/yr for Desulfovibrio vulgaris. The results showed that the consortia of isolated SRB were of comparable effects and features with the single ATCC 7757 strain.

  20. Study of texture and microstructure evaluation of steel API 5L X70 under various thermomechanical cycles

    This work studies the influence of different thermomechanical paths on the microstructure and crystallographic texture across the thickness of API 5L X70 pipeline steel manufactured via hot rolling using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD). The starting materials were controlled hot-rolled at 1000 °C to 44% and 67% reductions and subsequently heat treated with such processes as annealing, water quenching and quench tempering at three different temperatures to evaluate the microstructure and crystallographic texture changes across the thickness. The banded ferrite-pearlite microstructure of the initial material was changed to acicular ferrite, quasi-polygonal ferrite, granular bainite, martensite and retained austenite via different heat treatments. Moreover, different thermomechanical paths induced crystallographic texture variations across the thickness, e.g., {112}//ND, {111}//ND (γ fibre), and {011}//ND fibres dominated on the surface plane in contact with the rolls, whereas {001}//ND and particularly the (001)[1 1 0] texture component developed in the centre plane on which shear deformation has a zero value in this region. In this study, a simple interpretation of texture evolution was analyzed by comparison with the orientation changes that occurred during different rolling schedules and post-treatment processes.

    Full Text Available Proses bending banyak digunakan dalam proses produksi pada pipa. Proses ini akan menghasilkan peristiwa tensile dan compress, maka stress yang terjadi akibat gaya tekan atau gaya tarik ini akan bekerja simultan pada lingkungan korosif yang dapat menyebabkan terjadinya korosi. Deformasi yang terjadi ini akan mengakibatkan perbedaan tingkat laju korosi pada setiap perubahannya, yaitu dengan sudut bending yang berbeda. Oleh karena itu, untuk membuktikannya dilakukanlah penelitian dengan tiga sudut bending yang berbeda yaitu 60°, 90°, dan 135°. Material yang digunakan adalah pipa bawah laut API 5L Grade X65. Pipa ini dibending dengan sudut di atas, kemudian dipotong tiga spesimen pada setiap intrados dan ektsrados pipa untuk setiap sudut bending. Pengujian laju korosi dengan menggunakan sel tiga elektroda dengan campuran larutan FeCl3 dan 0,3% aquades. Dari hasil penelitian diperoleh nilai laju korosi untuk intrados bending pipa ; sudut bending 60° adalah 0,75 mm/year, sudut 90° adalah 0,64 mm/year, dan untuk sudut 135° adalah 0,43 mm/year. Sedangkan untuk ekstrados pipa; sudut 60° nilai laju korosinya adalah 0,59 mm/year, sudut 90° adalah 0,49 mm/year, dan untuk sudut bending 135° nilai laju korosinya adalah 0,4 mm/year. Analisa surface morfologi yang dilakukan pada spesimen menyimpulkan bahwa semakin tinggi nilai laju korosi, maka bentuk permukaan dari spesimen akan semakin kasar,begitupun sebaliknya

  3. Study of texture and microstructure evaluation of steel API 5L X70 under various thermomechanical cycles

    This work studies the influence of different thermomechanical paths on the microstructure and crystallographic texture across the thickness of API 5L X70 pipeline steel manufactured via hot rolling using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD). The starting materials were controlled hot-rolled at 1000 °C to 44% and 67% reductions and subsequently heat treated with such processes as annealing, water quenching and quench tempering at three different temperatures to evaluate the microstructure and crystallographic texture changes across the thickness. The banded ferrite-pearlite microstructure of the initial material was changed to acicular ferrite, quasi-polygonal ferrite, granular bainite, martensite and retained austenite via different heat treatments. Moreover, different thermomechanical paths induced crystallographic texture variations across the thickness, e.g., {112}//ND, {111}//ND (γ fibre), and {011}//ND fibres dominated on the surface plane in contact with the rolls, whereas {001}//ND and particularly the (001)[1 1 0] texture component developed in the centre plane on which shear deformation has a zero value in this region.     Full Text Available The present work refers to the characterization of API 5L-X80 pipeline joints welded with self-shielded flux cored wire. This process was evaluated under preheating conditions, with an uniform and steady heat input. All joints were welded in flat position (IG, with the pipe turning and the torch still. Tube dimensions were 762 mm in external diameter and 16 mm in thickness. Welds were applied on single V-groove, with six weld beads, along with three levels of preheating temperatures (room temperature, 100 °C, 160 °C. These temperatures were maintained as interpass temperature. The filler metal E71T8-K6 with mechanical properties different from parent metal was used in undermatched conditions. The weld characterization is presented according to the mechanical test results of tensile strength, hardness and impact test. The mechanical tests were conducted according to API 1104, AWS and ASTM standards. API 1104 and API 51 were used as screening criteria. According to the results obtained, it was possible to remark that it is appropriate to weld API 5L-X80 steel ducts with Self-shielded Flux Cored wires, in conformance to the API standards and no preheat temperature is necessary.

    The effect of temperature and H2S concentration on amine corrosion of API 5L X52 carbon steel in a CO2-saturated 25 wt.% diethanolamine solution was investigated via electrochemical techniques. It was found that increase in temperature from 25 to 80 °C resulted in severe increase in corrosion rate from 0.88 to 16.24 mpy due to increase in degradation rate of amine. Also, it was concluded that increase in H2S concentration led to increase in corrosion rate because of formation of more heat stable amine salts. The effect of temperature on corrosion rate was more significant than acid gas loading.

Sistem perpipaan ini tidak mungkin terbentuk tanpa adanya proses las. Pengelasan Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW  merupakan las yang umum digunakan dalam struktur anjungan lepas pantai. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh dari variasi elektroda pengelasan terhadap laju korosi pada pipa API 5L Grade X65. Variasi elektroda yang digunakan adalah elektroda spesifikasi AWS yaitu E7018, E6010 dan E6013. Metode pengujian korosi ini menggunakan bantuan sel tiga elektroda dengan media korosi FeCl3 yang mengacu pada ASTM G48. Dari pengujian ini didapatkan hasil laju korosi pada pengelasan pipa dengan elektroda E7018 adalah 0,53 mmpy, untuk elektroda E6013 adalah 0,69 mmpy, dan untuk E6010 adalah 0,62 mmpy. Perbedaan laju korosi tersebut dipengaruhi oleh tensile strength pada elektroda dan baja yang di las. Selisih kandungan unsur Mangan (Mn pada pipa dan elektroda las juga mempengaruhi perbedaan laju korosi pada pipa. Berdasarkan hasil foto SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope, secara morfologi permukaan weldmetal dengan nilai laju korosi paling tinggi, permukaanya terlihat lebih kasar. Akan tetapi laju korosi hasil las dengan elektroda-elektroda trsebut masih berada pada level yang diijinkan.

    The concentration of chloride ions and the partial pressure of CO{sub 2} play an important role in the degradation of low-carbon steels used for the construction of pipelines in oil and gas industry. In order to evaluate the susceptibility of carbon steel API 5L X42 to pitting corrosion electrochemical noise and linear polarization resistance measurements were carried out in aqueous solutions containing chloride ions and CO{sub 2}. The concentration of chloride ions was varied between, 10000 and 18000 ppm, and the CO{sub 2} partial pressure between 10 psi and 18 psi. Experimental results pointed out that the formation of protective layer, consisting mainly of FeCO{sub 3}, depends on the partial pressure of CO{sub 2} in the system. Nevertheless, the stability of this layer was considerably affected by increasing the concentration of chloride ions causing that localized corrosion has taken place in some areas of the surface of API 5L X42, which were detected by electrochemical noise technique. The base metal microstructure was very similar to that one corresponding to the welded area. This microstructure was mainly comprised by ferrite and perlite, differing only in the grain size. Therefore, the susceptibility to hydrogen damage was similar in both cases. It is worth mentioning that the welded area has very small dimensions. Indeed, the fusion zone is only 5 mm wide while the heat affected zone is 1 mm wide. The hydrogen damage observed was mainly in the form of blisters, which were associated to the presence of aluminum rich inclusions. Also, it was noticed partial inclusion dissolution and some matrix attack adjacent to the inclusions.

    En la presente investigación se estudió la susceptibilidad al daño por hidrógeno en un acero API 5L X52 soldado por resistencia eléctrica. Para ello, se emplearon técnicas de permeación y de carga catódica de hidrógeno. El material fue caracterizado mediante microscopía electrónica de barrido y de transmisión. La susceptibilidad al daño por hidrógeno fue similar tanto en el metal base como en el cordón de soldadura. Este comportamiento se vincula a la microestructura homogénea constituida por perlita y ferrita, que presentan ambos, aun cuando existen diferencias en el tamaño de grano. El cordón de soldadura tenía dimensiones muy pequeñas, donde la zona de fusión y la afectada por el calor poseen espesores de 5 mm y 1 mm, respectivamente.     Full Text Available Metallic materials undergo many metallurgical changes when subjected to welding thermal cycles, and these changes have a considerable influence on the thermo-mechanical properties of welded structures. One method for evaluating the welding thermal cycle variables, while still in the project phase, would be simulation using computational methods. This paper presents an evaluation of the temperature field and residual stresses in a multipass weld of API 5L X80 steel, which is extensively used in oil and gas industry, using the Finite Element Method (FEM. In the simulation, the following complex phenomena were considered: the variation in physical and mechanical properties of the material as a function of the temperature, welding speed and convection and radiation mechanisms. Additionally, in order to characterize a multipass weld using the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding process for the root pass and the Shielded Metal Arc Welding process for the filling passes, the analytical heat source proposed by Goldak and Chakravarti was used. In addition, we were able to analyze the influence of the mesh refinement in the simulation results. The findings indicated a significant variation of about 50% in the peak temperature values. Furthermore, changes were observed in terms of the level and profile of the welded joint residual stresses when more than one welding pass was considered.

    Most natural gas transmission pipelines in Korea have been constructed using a manual welding processes but major gas companies are looking into the advantages of an automatic process for girth welding. The automatic welding process is divided into gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and gas-metal-arc welding (GMAW) processes. GTAW uses an inert gas such as argon to shield weld metal from the atmosphere during welding and a 0.9-1.6 mm solid wire. Filler metals used in the GMAW process are classified into solid wire and flux cored wire. In this study, Charpy impact tests, crack tip opening tests and micro-hardness tests were conducted on a steel pipeline to determine the effects of weld metal composition and microstructure on the toughness of weld metal. API 5L X65 steel pipes with 17.5 mm wall thickness and 762 mm outer diameter were welded using an orbital automatic welding process. Flux cored arc welding (FCAW) and GTAW were used to evaluate the automatic welding process. Manual welds were done using GTAW with ER70S-G filler metal for the root pass and shielded metal arc welding with low hydrogen E9016-G electrode for the remaining passes. It was concluded that the filler metals with the highest fracture toughness were E80T1-K2 and E71T-1 using the FCAW process and ER80S-G using the GTAW process.     Full Text Available Resumo Neste trabalho, investigaram-se efeitos do fenômeno de envelhecimento por deformação em juntas obtidas por soldagem a arco elétrico com proteção gasosa (GMAW, de tubos sem costura de aço API5L X65Q. Corpos de prova (CPs obtidos a partir das juntas soldadas foram submetidos à uma deformação plástica a frio de 3% e posteriormente envelhecidas por 1h a 250°C, de forma a se induzir envelhecimento estático. Buscando avaliar o envelhecimento dinâmico, os CPs foram deformados até 3% e o carregamento foi mantido durante 1h a 250°C. Os CPs envelhecidos foram submetidos a ensaios de tração e amostras representativas foram analisadas ao microscópio óptico e microscópio eletrônico de varredura. Observou-se que o fenômeno modificou a fração volumétrica de constituintes secundários no metal de solda e na ZTA, com aumento na proporção de agregados ferrita-carbonetos. Com relação às propriedades mecânicas, constatou-se que o fenômeno reduziu a razão elástica das juntas soldadas devido a um aumento no limite de resistência, além de aumentar o alongamento total, não prejudicando, portanto, as propriedades mecânicas em tração das juntas soldadas. Ao se comparar o envelhecimento estático com o envelhecimento dinâmico, observou-se que o aumento na capacidade de deformação plástica das juntas soldadas foi maior após envelhecimento estático por deformação.

    Full Text Available Se evaluó la morfología y el comportamiento electroquímico del revestimiento de niobio obtenido por el proceso de aspersión térmica a plasma en substrato de acero API 5L X65. El revestimiento con niobio se realizó con una corriente eléctrica de 500 A, flujo de polvo metálico de niobio de 15 g/min y gas de argón de 2.0 L/min. La preparación superficial del substrato se realiza con pre-calentamiento y limpieza a presión con abrasivo de alúmina. La morfología del revestimiento fue analizada por microscopía electrónica de barrido (MEB, la rugosidad de la superficie se evaluó por perfilometría, la dureza por micro-dureza Vickers y la adherencia por ensayado de doblado a 180°. La resistencia a la corrosión del revestimiento se determinó mediante el ensayo de polarización en una solución de NaVl 3,5%. A partir de los resultados obtenidos fue posible verificar que el revestimiento presentó fisuras y poros entre las placas rociadas además de una dureza elevada en relación al substrato y adherencia no adecuada. Aún así los valores de densidad de corriente desarrollados por el sistema en comparación al acero revestido se redujeron.The morphology and electrochemical behavior of niobium coating obtained by thermal plasma spray process on a substrate of steel API 5L X65 was evaluated. The coating was obtained, using electrical current of 500 A, 15 g/min of powder and 2.0 L/min of argon gas.     Flux Core Arc Welding processes (FCAW) are beginning to be applied in pipeline welds, however, very limited experimental data regarding mechanical properties of pipeline weld joints with these processes are available in the literature. In this paper, the effects of preheat temperature and type of FCAW on mechanical properties (microhardness and tensile strength) of API X80 weld joint steel are presented. FCAW processes with gas protection and self-shielded were used. Multipasses welding were applied in 30'' diameter and 0,625'' thickness tubes. Influence factors were: FCAW type and preheat temperature. Acceptance criteria of welded joints were evaluated by API 1104 standard for tensile strength test and ASTM E384-99 for microhardness test. The results obtained showed that FCAW type and preheat temperature have no influence on mechanical properties of API X80 joint steel. (author)

Para isto, chapas do referido aço foram soldadas por processo manual ao Arco Elétrico com Eletrodo Revestido (SMAW, utilizando 473 e 673 K como temperaturas de interpasses e o eletrodo celulósico AWS E8010-G como consumível; por processo ao Arco Elétrico com Arame Tubular (FCAW robotizado, utilizando o arame AWS E71T- 1C como metal de adição e argônio com 25%CO2 como gás de proteção; por processo a Arco Elétrico com Eletrodo de Tungstênio (GTAW mecanizado na raiz da solda, usando o arame ER70S-3 e argônio como gás de proteção. As análises microestruturais foram relacionadas com os resultados de ensaios de impacto Charpy nos metais de solda e com os perfis de microdureza Vickers ao longo da junta soldada. El revestimiento de niobio fue obtenido por el proceso de aspersión térmica a plasma de arco no transferido y el revestimiento inconel 625 por soldadura con electrodo revestido. La resistencia al desgaste por abrasión fue evaluada según la norma Petrobras N-2568, en un tribómetro CTER, la rugosidad y el volumen de material desgastado se determinó a través de perfilometría y la dureza de los revestimientos por microscopia Vickers. Los revestimientos obtenidos fueron caracterizados respecto a su morfología por microscopia electrónica de barrido (MEB y microscopía óptica (MO. La mayor dureza del revestimiento con niobio obtenido puede haber contribuido a reducir la tasa de desgaste en comparación con el revestimiento de inconel 625.

    Full Text Available The concentration of chloride ions and the partial pressure of CO2 play an important role in the degradation of low-carbon steels used for the construction of pipelines in oil and gas industry. In order to evaluate the susceptibility of carbon steel API 5L X42 to pitting corrosion electrochemical noise and linear polarization resistance measurements were carried out in aqueous solutions containing chloride ions and CO2. The concentration of chloride ions was varied between, 10000 and 18000 ppm, and the CO2 partial pressure between 10 psi and 18 psi. Experimental results pointed out that the formation of protective layer, consisting mainly of FeCO 3, depends on the partial pressure of CO2 in the system. Nevertheless, the stability of this layer was considerably affected by increasing the concentration of chloride ions causing that localized corrosion has taken place in some areas of the surface of API 5L X42, which were detected by electrochemical noise echnique.La concentración de iones cloruro y la presión parcial de CO2, tienen un papel importante en el proceso de degradación de los aceros de bajo carbono empleados en la construcción de líneas de transporte en industrias petroleras.     Quality health care relies upon communication in a patient's preferred language. Language access in health care occurs when individuals are: (1) Welcomed by providers regardless of language ability; and (2) Offered quality language services as part of their care. Federal law generally requires access to health care and quality language services for deaf and Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients in health care settings, but these patients still find it hard to access health care and quality language services.Meanwhile, several states are implementing Medicaid Accountable Care Organization (ACO) initiatives to reduce health care costs and improve health care quality. Alternative payment methods used in these initiatives can give Accountable Care Organizations more flexibility to design linguistically accessible care, but they can also put ACOs at increased financial risk for the cost of care. If these new payment methods do not account for differences in patient language needs, ACO initiatives could have the unintended consequence of rewarding ACOs who do not reach out to deaf and LEP communities or offer quality language services.We reviewed public documents related to Medicaid ACO initiatives in six states. Some of these documents address language access. More could be done, however, to pay for language access efforts. This article describes Medicaid ACO initiatives and explores how different payment tools could be leveraged to reward ACOs for increased access to care and quality language services.     A permanent magnet undulator has been built and installed on the ACO Storage Ring. The undulator design, the spontaneous emission and gain of the system, as well as the laser induced bunch lengthening of the electron bunch, are presented. A low-loss optical cavity has been also recently built and operated on the ring. Its performance and the degradation problems of the mirrors are discussed. Amplification of the spontaneous emission stored in the optical cavity has been observed. Also, preliminary results on the operation of an optical klystron are reported and interpreted

    The DIRAC framework for distributed computing has been designed as a flexible and modular solution that can be adapted to the requirements of any community. Users interact with DIRAC via command line, using the web portal or accessing resources via the DIRAC python API. The current DIRAC API requires users to use a python version valid for DIRAC. These client applications can contain subtle errors that can be hard to debug if they misuse the Facebook API. In this paper we present an experience report on applying Microsoft's new code contract system for the .NET framework to the Facebook API.We wrote contracts for several classes in the Facebook API wrapper which allows Microsoft .NET developers to implement Facebook applications. We evaluated the usefulness of these contracts during implementation of a new Facebook application. Our experience indicates that having code contracts provides a better and quicker software development experience.

At present, in many engineering fields, they have been a pivotal position, but there are some defects in solving function optimization problems. Because of the lack of pheromone in the initial stage of ACO, the speed of the solution is relatively slow, and AFSA has the advantages of strong global convergence ability and fast speed. In this paper, based on the advantages and disadvantages of ACO and AFSA, two kinds of algorithms are integrated, and the advantage is enhanced, a better optimization algorithm is put forward: ACO-AFSA. The initial solution and improved state transition probabilities are obtained by AFSA, and the basic ACO is improved, the congestion degree of AFSA is introduced in the algorithm, makes most of ants’ initial optimization will not be randomly selected at a strong crowding restrictions. Experimental results show that the new algorithm can get the optimal solution with less number of iterations, which greatly saves computation time, and has higher accuracy and better convergence performance. Engineering, computing the shortest distance between the surface and plane of the problem has also been good results, the experimental results are satisfactory.

    Associated Particle Imaging (API) is an active neutron probe technique that provides a 3-D image with elemental composition of the material under interrogation, and so occupies a unique niche in the interrogation of unknown objects. The highly penetrating nature of neutrons enables API to provide detailed information about targets of interest that are hidden from view. Due to the isotropic nature of the induced reactions, radiation detectors can be set on the same side of the object as the neutron source, so that the object can be interrogated from a single side. At the heat of the system is a small generator that produces a continuous, monoenergetic flux of neutrons. By measuring the trajectory of coincident alpha particles that are produced as part of the process, the trajectory of the neutron can be inferred. Interactions between a neutron and the material in its path often produce a gamma ray whose energy is characteristic of that material. When the gamma ray is detected, its energy is measured and combined with the trajectory information to produce a 3-D image of the composition of the object being interrogated. During the course of API development, a number of improvements have been made. A new, more rugged sealed Tube Neutron Generator (STNG) has been designed and fabricated that is less susceptible to radiation damage and better able to withstand the rigors of fielding than earlier designs. A specialized high-voltage power supply for the STNG has also been designed and built. A complete package of software has been written for the tasks of system calibration, diagnostics and data acquisition and analysis. A portable system has been built and field tested, proving that API can be taken out of the lab and into real-world situations, and that its performance in the field is equal to that in the lab.

    Full Text Available In the wide spread internet, response time and pocket loss are inappropriate due to network traffic, as a result the network efficiency becomes worst and the system provides poor Quality of Service (QoS. An optimal routing protocol, especially multipath may avoid such traffic in the network. But existing routing protocols, both single path and multi path, concentrates only on finding the routes based on any one or some set of metrics, that not always suitable for dynamic, cloud natured network environment. Ant Colony Optimization (ACO based multipath routing protocol was suggested as an alternate to this problem by many researchers. The multipath ACO also provides same set of link(s for the source to destination, so that traffic merging again becomes a critical problem. This paper proposes an optimal solution to avoid the problem of traffic merging in the network by removing redundant link in the route. The Proposed algorithm, called 'Redundant Link Avoidance (RLA algorithm', is an ACO based multi path routing methodology, avoiding copious link in the suggested routes of ACO multipath protocol.

    A key factor that demands special attention in the pipeline construction is the cold bending process, since 30 to 40% of the pipes use this process in the field. This study aimed to evaluate the X80 cold bending operational parameters, in order make viable the use of this process in the installation of future onshore pipelines. Three 34''OD x 0,750'' pipes were bended. The bending was conducted using a hydraulic equipment with application of equally spaced punches, recording the correspondent angles related to the elastic and plastic deformations in order to assess the spring-back effect and performing dimensional inspection. Samples from pipe and the weld were subjected to mechanical and metallographic tests. It was possible to obtain a 19 deg curve and 27D radius without presenting any evidence of wrinkles, out of roundness or any type of mechanical damage. After analysis, all criteria established from project specifications were complied, the mechanical tests performed allowed comparing pipe mechanical properties of straight and bended regions. The results of this study provide technical know how for future X80 onshore pipelines applications. (author)

En este trabajo se presenta un modelo para resolver el Problema de Recolección de Residuos Domiciliarios por Contenedores, el que aplica un concepto de secuencias parciales de recolección que deben ser unidas para minimizar la distancia total de recolección. El problema de unir las secuencias parciales se representa como un TSP, el que es resuelto mediante un algoritmo ACO. En base a recomendaciones de la literatura, se calibran experimentalmente los parámetros del algoritmo y se recomiendan rangos de valores que representan buenos rendimientos promedio.     Early evidence suggested that accountable care organizations (ACOs) could improve health care quality while constraining costs, and ACOs are expanding throughout the United States. However, if disadvantaged patients have unequal access to physicians who participate in ACOs, that expansion may exacerbate health care disparities. We examined the relationship between physicians' participation in both Medicare and commercial ACOs across the country and the sociodemographic characteristics of their likely patient populations. Physicians' participation in ACOs varied widely across hospital referral regions, from nearly 0 percent to over 85 percent. After we adjusted for individual physician and practice characteristics, we found that physicians who practiced in ZIP Code Tabulation Areas where a higher percentage of the population was black, living in poverty, uninsured, or disabled or had less than a high school education-compared to other areas-had significantly lower rates of ACO participation than other physicians. Our findings suggest that vulnerable populations' access to physicians participating in ACOs may not be as great as access for other groups, which could exacerbate existing disparities in health care quality.     Relationships between physicians and hospitals have changed considerably over the past decade, as hospitals and physician groups have integrated and new public and private payment policies have created financial interdependence. The extent to which accountable care organizations (ACOs) involve hospitals in their operations may prove to be vitally important, because managing hospital care is a key part of improving health care quality and lowering cost growth. Using primary data on ACO composition and capabilities paired with hospital characteristics, we found that 20 percent of US hospitals were part of an ACO in 2014. Hospitals that were in urban areas, were nonprofit, or had a smaller share of Medicare patients were more likely to participate in ACOs, compared to hospitals that were in more rural areas, were for-profit or government owned, or had a larger share of Medicare patients, respectively. Qualitative data identified the following advantages of including a hospital in an ACO: the availability of start-up capital, advanced data sharing, and engagement of providers across the care continuum. Although the 63 percent of ACOs that included hospitals offered more comprehensive services compared to ACOs without hospitals, we found no differences between the two groups in their ability to manage hospital-related aspects of patient care.   19. MOEA/D-ACO: a multiobjective evolutionary algorithm using decomposition and AntColony.

    Combining ant colony optimization (ACO) and the multiobjective evolutionary algorithm (EA) based on decomposition (MOEA/D), this paper proposes a multiobjective EA, i.e., MOEA/D-ACO. Following other MOEA/D-like algorithms, MOEA/D-ACO decomposes a multiobjective optimization problem into a number of single-objective optimization problems. Each ant (i.e., agent) is responsible for solving one subproblem. All the ants are divided into a few groups, and each ant has several neighboring ants. An ant group maintains a pheromone matrix, and an individual ant has a heuristic information matrix. During the search, each ant also records the best solution found so far for its subproblem. To construct a new solution, an ant combines information from its group's pheromone matrix, its own heuristic information matrix, and its current solution. An ant checks the new solutions constructed by itself and its neighbors, and updates its current solution if it has found a better one in terms of its own objective. Extensive experiments have been conducted in this paper to study and compare MOEA/D-ACO with other algorithms on two sets of test problems. On the multiobjective 0-1 knapsack problem,MOEA/D-ACO outperforms the MOEA/D with conventional genetic operators and local search on all the nine test instances. We also demonstrate that the heuristic information matrices in MOEA/D-ACO are crucial to the good performance of MOEA/D-ACO for the knapsack problem. On the biobjective traveling salesman problem, MOEA/D-ACO performs much better than the BicriterionAnt on all the 12 test instances. We also evaluate the effects of grouping, neighborhood, and the location information of current solutions on the performance of MOEA/D-ACO. The work in this paper shows that reactive search optimization scheme, i.e., the "learning while optimizing" principle, is effective in improving multiobjective optimization algorithms.     Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) represent two major public health problems. However, there is a significant proportion of patients with a mixed asthma-COPD phenotype. This condition is defined as asthma-COPD overlap syndrome (ACOS). Since there are no internationally accepted criteria for the diagnosis of that syndrome, its management remains difficult. Given the fact that patients with ACOS have an increased risk of exacerbation and hospitalization, there is a pressing need for a more targeted approach and better management. We propose that fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), a marker of eosinophilic inflammation, could help clinicians differentiate ACOS from asthma and COPD.     The accountable care organization (ACO) model holds the promise of reducing costs and improving the quality of care by realigning payment incentives to focus on health outcomes instead of service volume. One key to managing the total cost of care is improving care coordination for and treatment of people with behavioral health disorders. We examined qualitative data from ninety organizations participating in Medicare ACO demonstration programs from 2012 through 2015 to determine whether and how they focused on behavioral health care. These ACOs had mixed degrees of engagement in improving behavioral health care for their populations. The biggest challenges included a lack of behavioral health care providers, data availability, and sustainable financing models. Nonetheless, we found substantial interest in integrating behavioral health care into primary care across a majority of the ACOs. PMID:27385242

    Full Text Available In this paper, an efficient methodology to generate optimal and/or quasi‐optimal sequences of G commands to minimize the manufacturing time is presented. Our solution starts from original G codes provided by application CAD/CAM software. Here, first we tackled the problem of reducing the time of the travel path for drilling of an industrial robotic manufacturing machine. The methodology can be easily implemented for free distribution or commercial CAD/CAM software without achieving any modification to it. Several experiments that demonstrate how this proposal can help to outperform solutions provided by application software are presented, consistent improvements around 62% were obtained. Moreover, for optimizing the time along the travel path, we present a high performance implementation of Ant Colonies (ACO known as Parallel ACO (P‐ACO that allows achieving the optimization task efficiently by speeding up the original ACO. A Graphical User Interface that integrates the whole process is shown.

The most common orofacial pains have their origin at dental or periodontal level, or in muscle -skeletical structures. However, the patient can have pain in this area- either in teeth or muscle-eskeletical structures- and the originating source can be located at a distance. This type of pain is called heterotopic pain. A possible source of heterotopic pain is the pain of cardiac origin. This paper presents a clinical case in which the bilateral mandibular pain is the initial symptom of an ischemic cardiopathy that was erroneously labeled as temporomandibular arthrosis.

In this paper a Clustering algorithm based on Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) for VANETs (CACONET) is proposed. CACONET forms optimized clusters for robust communication. CACONET is compared empirically with state-of-the-art baseline techniques like Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) and Comprehensive Learning Particle Swarm Optimization (CLPSO). Experiments varying the grid size of the network, the transmission range of nodes, and number of nodes in the network were performed to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of these algorithms. For optimized clustering, the parameters considered are the transmission range, direction and speed of the nodes. The results indicate that CACONET significantly outperforms MOPSO and CLPSO.     Given a large-scale time-evolving multi-modal and multi-relational complex network (a.k.a., a large-scale dynamic semantic graph), we want to implement algorithms that discover patterns of activities on the graph and learn predictive models of those discovered patterns. This document outlines the application programming interface (API) requirements for fast prototyping of feature extraction, learning, and prediction algorithms on large dynamic semantic graphs. Since our algorithms must operate on large-scale dynamic semantic graphs, we have chosen to use the graph API developed in the CASC Complex Networks Project. This API is supported on the back end by a semantic graph database (developed by Scott Kohn and his team). The advantages of using this API are (i) we have full-control of its development and (ii) the current API meets almost all of the requirements outlined in this document.

    Full Text Available The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of using RNA interference in down regulating the expression of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid oxidase gene in Eksotika papaya. One-month old embryogenic calli were separately transformed with Agrobacterium strain LBA 4404 harbouring the three different RNAi pOpOff2 constructs bearing the 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid oxidase gene. A total of 176 putative transformed lines were produced from 15,000 calli transformed, selected, then regenerated on medium supplemented with kanamycin. Integration and expression of the targeted gene in putatively transformed lines were verified by PCR and real-time RT-PCR. Confined field evaluation of a total of 31 putative transgenic lines planted showed a knockdown expression of the targeted ACO1 and ACO2 genes in 13 lines, which required more than 8 days to achieve the full yellow colour (Index 6. Fruits harvested from lines pRNAiACO2 L2-9 and pRNAiACO1 L2 exhibited about 20 and 14 days extended post-harvest shelf life to reach Index 6, respectively.     Sacbrood virus(SBV) is one of the most destructive viruses in the Asian honeybeeApis ceranabut is much less destructive inApis mellifera In previous studies, SBV isolates infectingA. cerana(AcSBV) and SBV isolates infectingA. mellifera(AmSBV) were identified as different serotypes, suggesting a species barrier in SBV infection. In order to investigate this species isolation, we examined the presence of SBV infection in 318A. melliferacolonies and 64A. ceranacolonies, and we identified the genotypes of SBV isolates. We also performed artificial infection experiments under both laboratory and field conditions. The results showed that 38A. melliferacolonies and 37A. ceranacolonies were positive for SBV infection. Phylogenetic analysis based on RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) gene sequences indicated thatA. ceranaisolates and mostA. melliferaisolates formed two distinct clades but two strains isolated fromA. melliferawere clustered with theA. ceranaisolates. In the artificial-infection experiments, AcSBV negative-strand RNA could be detected in both adult bees and larvae ofA. mellifera, although there were no obvious signs of the disease, demonstrating the replication of AcSBV inA. mellifera Our results suggest that AcSBV is able to infectA. melliferacolonies with low prevalence (0.63% in this study) and pathogenicity.     Cell division cycle 5-like (CDC5L) protein is a cell cycle regulator of the G2/M transition and has been reported to participate in the catalytic step of pre-messenger RNA (mRNA) splicing and DNA damage repair. Recently, it was also found to act as a candidate oncogene in osteosarcoma and cervical tumors. However, the role of CDC5L expression in tumor biology was still unclear. Here, we analyzed the expression and clinical significance of CDC5L in gliomas. The expression of CDC5L in fresh glioma tissues and paraffin-embedded slices was evaluated by western blot and immunohistochemistry, respectively. We found that CDC5L was highly expressed in glioma tissues. The expression of CDC5L was significantly associated with glioma pathology grade and Ki-67 expression. Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that high CDC5L expression was an independent prognostic factor for glioma patients' survival. To determine whether CDC5L could regulate the proliferation of glioma cells, we transfected glioma cells with interfering RNA target CDC5L, then investigated cell proliferation with cell counting kit (CCK)-8, flow cytometry assays and colony formation analyses. Our results indicated that knockdown of CDC5L would inhibit proliferation of glioma cells. Besides, reduced expression of CDC5L could induce the apoptosis of glioma cells.     Given a set of celestial bodies, the problem of finding an optimal sequence of swing-bys, deep space manoeuvres (DSM) and transfer arcs connecting the elements of the set is combinatorial in nature. The number of possible paths grows exponentially with the number of celestial bodies. Therefore, the design of an optimal multiple gravity assist (MGA) trajectory is a NP-hard mixed combinatorial-continuous problem. Its automated solution would greatly improve the design of future space missions, allowing the assessment of a large number of alternative mission options in a short time. This work proposes to formulate the complete automated design of a multiple gravity assist trajectory as an autonomous planning and scheduling problem. The resulting scheduled plan will provide the optimal planetary sequence and a good estimation of the set of associated optimal trajectories. The trajectory model consists of a sequence of celestial bodies connected by two-dimensional transfer arcs containing one DSM. For each transfer arc, the position of the planet and the spacecraft, at the time of arrival, are matched by varying the pericentre of the preceding swing-by, or the magnitude of the launch excess velocity, for the first arc. For each departure date, this model generates a full tree of possible transfers from the departure to the destination planet. Each leaf of the tree represents a planetary encounter and a possible way to reach that planet. An algorithm inspired by ant colony optimization (ACO) is devised to explore the space of possible plans. The ants explore the tree from departure to destination adding one node at the time: every time an ant is at a node, a probability function is used to select a feasible direction. This approach to automatic trajectory planning is applied to the design of optimal transfers to Saturn and among the Galilean moons of Jupiter. Solutions are compared to those found through more traditional genetic-algorithm techniques.

    This paper presents an adaptive near-optimal scheduler for multimedia traffic for the 802.11e Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) medium access control scheme. The scheduler exploits the ant colony optimization (ACO) meta heuristic to tackle the challenge of packet scheduling. ACO is a biologically inspired algorithm that is known to find near-optimal solutions for combinatorial optimization problems. Thus, we expect that ACO scheduling produces more efficient schedules than comparable deterministic scheduling approaches at the expenses of a computational overhead it introduces. We compare ACO scheduling relevant deterministic scheduling approaches, and in particular the MLLF scheduler that is specifically designed for the needs of compressed multimedia applications. The purpose of the evaluation is twofold. It allows to draw conclusions on the feasibility of ACO scheduling for multimedia traffic while it serves as a benchmark to determine to what extent deterministic schedulers fall short of a near-optimal solution.

    Full Text Available As part of the Europeana Cloud (eCloud project, Trinity College Dublin investigated best practice in the use of web services, such as APIs, for accessing large data sets from cultural heritage collections. This research looked into the provision and use of APIs, and moreover, whether or not more customised programmatic access to datasets is what researchers want or need. In order to understand whether current patterns of API usage reflect a skills gap on the part of researchers or a mismatch of tool to purpose, we looked not only at the creators and developer/users of APIs, but also at humanists already re-using big data; approaches in cultural heritage institutions and other research infrastructures to bring API use to non-technical audiences; and the kinds of training and other support services available or emerging within the data-intensive humanities research lifecycle. We conducted both desk research and a series of 11 interviews with figures working as researchers, developers or data providers, including figures from both the API development and the data usage communities. This research, conducted under the eCloud project and supported by the European Commission’s ICT Policy and Support Programme (Grant number 325091, was begun in March 2014 and is now in its concluding validation stage. The results of the research are not yet finalised, but the contribution is already emerging of this work to the debate about APIs being either the way forward for digital cultural heritage collections, or the Emperor’s New Clothes (or maybe a bit of both.

The ACO is an iterative meta-heuristic search technique, which inspired by the foraging food behavior of real ant colonies. In ACO, real ants become artificial ants with the particular abilities such as distance determination & tour memory. The solution is constructed in a probabilistic waybased on pheromone model in the form of numerical values. The concept of this approach is selecting the best possible subsets of feature from the original set with the help of ACO and combines the outputs from multiple k-NN classifiers. The experimental results show that this proposed method improves the average classification accuracy of k-NN classifier.

    Full Text Available The plant hormone, ethylene, is an important regulator which involved in regulating fruit ripening and flower senescence. In this study, RNA interference (RNAi technology was employed to silence the genes involved in ethylene biosynthetic pathway. This was achieved by blocking the expression of specific gene encoding the ACC oxidase. Initially, cDNA corresponding to ACO1 of lowland tomato cultivar (MT1, which has high identity with ACO1 of Solanum lycopersicum in GenBank, was cloned through RT-PCR. Using a partial coding region of ACO1, one hpRNAi transformation vector was constructed and expressed ectopically under the 35S promoter. Results showed that transgenic lines harboring the hpRNA-ACO1 construct had lower ethylene production and a longer shelf life of 32 days as compared to 10 days for wild-type fruits. Changes in cell wall degrading enzyme activities were also investigated in cases where the transgenic fruits exhibited reduced rates of firmness loss, which can be associated with a decrease in pectin methylesterase (PME and polygalacturonase (PG activities. However, no significant change was detected in both transgenic and wild-type fruits in terms of β-galactosidase (β-Gal activity and levels of total soluble solid, titratable acid and ascorbic acid.

    Full Text Available An experiment was conducted to determine the foraging behavior of Apis mellifera L. and Apis cerana F. in rapeseed under cage condition in Chitwan, Nepal during 2012-2013. This experiment showed that Apis cerana F. foraged extra 42 minute per day as compared to Apis mellifera L. Apis cerana F. were more attracted to nectar, whereas Apis mellifera L. were more attracted to pollen collection throughout the day. The activities, in into hives and out from hives, for both species were recorded more at 2:00 pm and least at 8:00 am. The highest in-out were observed at 2:00 pm on both species as Apis mellifera L. 44.33 bees entered into hives and 49.66 bees went out of hives, whereas lower number of Apis cerana F. 43.66 bees entered into hives and 48.16 bees were out of hives. Apis mellifera L. collect 1.22:1 and 0.41:1 pollen nectar ratio at 10:00 am and 4:00 am whereas at same hours Apis cerana collect 1.16:1 and 0.30:1 pollen nectar ratio. Apis cerana F. foraged significantly higher number of rapeseed flowers and plants as compared to Apis mellifera L. under caged condition. It shows that Apis cerana F. was more efficient pollinator as compared to Apis mellifera L. under caged condition.

  13. Characterisation of weldment hardness, impact energy and microstructure in API X65 steel

    The variation of microstructure and mechanical properties in various sub-zones of double submerged arc welded line pipe steel of grade API X65 was investigated. Instrumented Charpy V-notch tests and Vickers hardness experiments were conducted on the fusion zone, base metal and heat affected zone of the weld joint in 14.3 mm thick, 1219 mm outside diameter spiral pipeline. The lowest impact energy and the highest hardness level (160J and 218 HV, respectively) were recorded in the fusion zone. The low energy and high hardness characteristics of the seam weld can be attributed to its cast microstructure and the presence of grain boundary phases (such as proeutectoid ferrite), confirmed by standard metallographic observation. Despite this, service requirements set by the API 5L industry code (minimum impact energy of 73J, maximum hard spots of 350 HV) were fulfilled by the tested steel.     Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are infected by two species of microsporidia: Nosema apis and Nosemaceranae. Epidemiological evidence indicates that N. ceranae may be replacing N. apis globally in A. mellifera populations, suggesting a potential competitive advantage of N. ceranae. Mixed infections of the two species occur, and little is known about the interactions among the host and the two pathogens that have allowed N. ceranae to become dominant in most geographical areas. We demonstrated that mixed Nosema species infections negatively affected honey bee survival (median survival=15-17days) more than single species infections (median survival=21days and 20days for N. apis and N. ceranae, respectively), with median survival of control bees of 27days. We found similar rates of infection (percentage of bees with active infections after inoculation) for both species in mixed infections, with N. apis having a slightly higher rate (91% compared to 86% for N. ceranae). We observed slightly higher spore counts in bees infected with N. ceranae than in bees infected with N. apis in single microsporidia infections, especially at the midpoint of infection (day 10). Bees with mixed infections of both species had higher spore counts than bees with single infections, but spore counts in mixed infections were highly variable. We did not see a competitive advantage for N. ceranae in mixed infections; N. apis spore counts were either higher or counts were similar for both species and more N. apis spores were produced in 62% of bees inoculated with equal dosages of the two microsporidian species. N. ceranae does not, therefore, appear to have a strong within-host advantage for either infectivity or spore growth, suggesting that direct competition in these worker bee mid-guts is not responsible for its apparent replacement of N. apis.     Full Text Available A characterization study was done to analyze how microstructural regions affect the mechanical properties, corrosion and fractography of the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ, weld bead and base metal for pipe naturally aged for 21 years at 30 °C. Results showed that microstructures exhibited damage and consequently decrease in properties, resulting in over-aged due to service. SEM analysis showed that base metal presented coarse ferrite grain. Tensile test indicated that microstructures showed discontinuous yield. Higher tensile strength was obtained for weld bead, which exhibited a lower impact energy in comparison to that of HAZ and base metal associated with brittle fracture by trans-granular cleavage. The degradation of properties was associated with the coarsening of nano-carbides observed through TEM images analysis, which was confirmed by SEM fractography of tensile and impact fracture surfaces. The weld bead reached the largest void density and highest susceptibility to corrosion in H2S media when compared to those of the HAZ and base metal.Se realizó un estudio de caracterización para analizar cómo la microestructura afecta a las propiedades mecánicas, corrosión y fractura de la zona afectada por calor (ZAC, soldadura y metal base para tubería envejecida naturalmente durante 21 años a 30 °C. Los resultados indicaron que las microestructuras presentaron daño y consecuentemente reducción en propiedades mecánicas, como consecuencia del envejecimiento por servicio. El estudio mediante MEB mostró que el metal base presenta grano ferrítico grueso. La prueba de tensión indicó que las microestructuras mostraron fluencia discontinua. La mayor resistencia a la tracción se presentó en la soldadura, la cual alcanzó menor energía de impacto en comparación con la ZAC y metal base asociado con fractura frágil por clivaje transgranular. La degradación de las propriedades está en relación con el engrosamiento de nanocarburos observados a través del análisis de imágenes por MET, lo que se confirmó mediante fractografía por MEB de superfícies de fractura bajo tensión e impacto. La soldadura alcanzó la mayor densidad de microhuecos y la mayor susceptibilidad a la corrosión en un medio conteniendo H2S que cuando se compara con la ZAC y metal base.

    Full Text Available The objective of this study is to compare the corrosion resistance of the base metal (MB and weld region (RCS of a X80 pipeline in three types of aqueous solution of acetic acid (CH3COOH 0,5% by weight: naturally aerated, non-aerated and non-aerated with H2S. Linear polarization is employed for it determinates Polarization Resistance (Rp which allows comparing the corrosion resistance of steel in different conditions. The results show that Rp practically does not change with the immersion time (until 8 hours, for both regions. The two regions have higher Rp in non-aerated aqueous solution, intermediate Rp in non-aerated with H2S and lower Rp in naturally aerated; this is due the effect of oxygen in cathodic reactions and shows that H2S can accelerate slightly the corrosion. The RCS has greater Rp than the MB for any aeration conditions. The presence of alloying elements in RCS justifies this behavior. The morphology of corrosion was examined under an optical microscope (MO and shows that uniform corrosion is predominant.

    Recent advancements in technology and methodology have led to growing amounts of increasingly complex neuroscience data recorded from various species, modalities, and levels of study. The rapid data growth has made efficient data access and flexible, machine-readable data annotation a crucial requisite for neuroscientists. Clear and consistent annotation and organization of data is not only an important ingredient for reproducibility of results and re-use of data, but also essential for collaborative research and data sharing. In particular, efficient data management and interoperability requires a unified approach that integrates data and metadata and provides a common way of accessing this information. In this paper we describe GNData, a data management platform for neurophysiological data. GNData provides a storage system based on a data representation that is suitable to organize data and metadata from any electrophysiological experiment, with a functionality exposed via a common application programming interface (API). Data representation and API structure are compatible with existing approaches for data and metadata representation in neurophysiology. The API implementation is based on the Representational State Transfer (REST) pattern, which enables data access integration in software applications and facilitates the development of tools that communicate with the service. Client libraries that interact with the API provide direct data access from computing environments like Matlab or Python, enabling integration of data management into the scientist's experimental or analysis routines.     This paper reports that oil field equipment and product manufacturers can maintain a competitive advantage and minimize costs by integrating American Petroleum Institute (API) licensing programs with International Standards Organization (ISO) 9001 standards under one quality system. A combined quality system approach can position a company for quality system certification under ISO 9001 while maintaining API specifications. Furthermore, only one quality system manual is needed for API licensing and ISO certification, avoiding duplication of effort.     The U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO) is in the process of modernizing its publicly available web services into APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). Services configured as APIs offer greater flexibility to the user and allow greater usage. Depending on the particular service, users who implement our APIs will receive either a PNG (Portable Network Graphics) image or data in JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) format. This raw data can then be embedded in third-party web sites or in apps.Part of the USNO's mission is to provide astronomical and timing data to government agencies and the general public. To this end, the USNO provides accurate computations of astronomical phenomena such as dates of lunar phases, rise and set times of the Moon and Sun, and lunar and solar eclipse times. Users who navigate to our web site and select one of our 18 services are prompted to complete a web form, specifying parameters such as date, time, location, and object. Many of our services work for years between 1700 and 2100, meaning that past, present, and future events can be computed. Upon form submission, our web server processes the request, computes the data, and outputs it to the user.Over recent years, the use of the web by the general public has vastly changed. In response to this, the USNO is modernizing its web-based data services. This includes making our computed data easier to embed within third-party web sites as well as more easily querying from apps running on tablets and smart phones. To facilitate this, the USNO has begun converting its services into APIs. In addition to the existing web forms for the various services, users are able to make direct URL requests that return either an image or numerical data.To date, four of our web services have been configured to run with APIs.     The corrosion behavior of gas metal arc welding (GMAW) regions has been studied using potentiodynamic polarization and polarization resistance (LPR) techniques. Experiments were conducted in hydrogen sulfide (H{sub 2}S)-containing brine and in H{sub 2}S-free brine. Welds were made on API 5L X52 steel. Due to differences in their microstructure, chemical composition and residual stress level, weld regions exhibited different responses under H{sub 2}S corrosion. Base metal exhibited the highest corrosion rate (CR) and the most cathodic corrosion potential.     Due to the advantages of ant colony optimization (ACO) in solving complex problems, a new data association algorithm based on ACO in a cluttered environment called DACDA is proposed. In the proposed method, the concept for tour and the length of tour are redefined. Additionally, the directional information is incorporated into the proposed method because it is one of the most important factors that affects the performance of data association. Kalraan filter is employed to estimate target states. Computer simulation results show that the proposed method could carry out data association in an acceptable CPU time, and the correct data association rate is higher than that obtained by the data association (DA) algorithm not combined with directional information.

In this paper, we proposed a particle swarm optimization (PSO and ant colony optimization (ACO based framework (PAF for RNA secondary structure prediction. PAF consists of crucial stem searching (CSS and global sequence building (GSB. In CSS, a modified ACO (MACO is used to search the crucial stems, and then a set of stems are generated. In GSB, we used a modified PSO (MPSO to construct all the stems in one sequence. We evaluated the performance of PAF on ten sequences, which have length from 122 to 1494. We also compared the performance of PAF with the results obtained from six existing well-known methods, SARNA-Predict, RnaPredict, ACRNA, PSOfold, IPSO, and mfold. The comparison results show that PAF could not only predict structures with higher accuracy rate but also find crucial stems.

    This paper provides an overview of Systems Engineering as it is applied in a conceptual design space systems department at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Marshall Spaceflight Center (MSFC) Advanced Concepts Office (ACO). Engineering work performed in the NASA MFSC's ACO is targeted toward the Exploratory Research and Concepts Development life cycle stages, as defined in the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) System Engineering Handbook. This paper addresses three ACO Systems Engineering tools that correspond to three INCOSE Technical Processes: Stakeholder Requirements Definition, Requirements Analysis, and Integration, as well as one Project Process Risk Management. These processes are used to facilitate, streamline, and manage systems engineering processes tailored for the earliest two life cycle stages, which is the environment in which ACO engineers work. The role of systems engineers and systems engineering as performed in ACO is explored in this paper.     The Linked Vocabulary API is a specification for publishing RESTful APIs of vocabularies represented in the Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) as Linked Data on the web. This work began as part of the Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning Vocabularies (CMSPV) project in response to the need for a standard manner for agencies to publish and consume hierarchical vocabularies on the web. The RESTful architecture of the API provides a simple mechanism for consumption of full vocabularies, single vocabulary terms, related terms, and searches on terms. The Linked Data nature of the API promotes interoperability by exposing vocabulary resources as resolvable URIs that may be referenced from other vocabularies or sources of Linked Data and by allowing the published vocabulary to contain references as links to terms from other vocabularies. The Linked Vocabulary API is formally defined in a Linked Data API specification and may be deployed using standard implementations of the Linked Data API such as the Epimorphics Linked Data API (ELDA). Recent presentations of work done with the Linked Vocabulary API as part of the CMSPV project have resulted in the API receiving growing interest from the broader scientific community. In this contribution we present the Linked Vocabulary API design and deployment process.

This paper first proposes an implementation model of Parlay MMCCS API based on SIP, then presents a mapping between SIP and MMCCS API as far as methods and parameters are concerned, illustrates corresponding relationships between different components of SIP and MMCCS API by means of an application collaboration diagram, and finally presents an application using Java codes as well as some SIP messages. The application shows that a majority of MMCCS API based on SIP can be implemented and therefore verifies our mapping between MMCCS API and SIP.

  4. Predicting coal ash fusion temperature based on its chemical composition using ACO-BP neural network

    Coal ash fusion temperature is important to boiler designers and operators of power plants. Fusion temperature is determined by the chemical composition of coal ash, however, their relationships are not precisely known. A novel neural network, ACO-BP neural network, is used to model coal ash fusion temperature based on its chemical composition. Ant colony optimization (ACO) is an ecological system algorithm, which draws its inspiration from the foraging behavior of real ants. A three-layer network is designed with 10 hidden nodes. The oxide contents consist of the inputs of the network and the fusion temperature is the output. Data on 80 typical Chinese coal ash samples were used for training and testing. Results show that ACO-BP neural network can obtain better performance compared with empirical formulas and BP neural network. The well-trained neural network can be used as a useful tool to predict coal ash fusion temperature according to the oxide contents of the coal ash

    Full Text Available Sin entrar en polémicas sobre a quién atribuir la primera descripción de lo que actualmente llamamos Psicosis maníaco-depresiva, es decir, sin tomar partido por Baillarger o J.-P. Falret, lo cierto es que a mediados del pasado siglo los alienistas franceses orquestaron un saber nosológico en el que se reunían en una única categoría dos manifestaciones extremas del humor: la manía y la melancolía. Tras las descripciones fundacionales de Baillarger y de Falret, fechadas ambas en el mismo año, 1854, se abrió un espacio nosológico opuesto al terreno de los delirios crónicos: las psicosis del humor frente a las psicosis de la razón, o bien psicosis maníaco-depresiva frente a esquizofrenia-paranoia. De la última cosecha del nosógrafo por excelencia, Emil Kraepelin, proviene la descripción clínica más completa y matizada de la locura maníaco-depresiva (das manisch-depressive Irresein.   6. Solving optimum operation of single pump unit problem with ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm

    For pumping stations, the effective scheduling of daily pump operations from solutions to the optimum design operation problem is one of the greatest potential areas for energy cost-savings, there are some difficulties in solving this problem with traditional optimization methods due to the multimodality of the solution region. In this case, an ACO model for optimum operation of pumping unit is proposed and the solution method by ants searching is presented by rationally setting the object function and constrained conditions. A weighted directed graph was constructed and feasible solutions may be found by iteratively searching of artificial ants, and then the optimal solution can be obtained by applying the rule of state transition and the pheromone updating. An example calculation was conducted and the minimum cost was found as 4.9979. The result of ant colony algorithm was compared with the result from dynamic programming or evolutionary solving method in commercial software under the same discrete condition. The result of ACO is better and the computing time is shorter which indicates that ACO algorithm can provide a high application value to the field of optimal operation of pumping stations and related fields.

    Intrinsic apoptosis eliminates cells with damaged DNA and cells with dysregulated expression of oncogene. PGAM5, a member of the phosphoglycerate mutase family, has two splicing variants: PGAM5L (the long form) and PGAM5S (the short form). It has been well established that PGAM5 is at the convergent point of multiple necrosis pathways. However, the role of PGAM5 in intrinsic apoptosis is still controversial. Here we report that the PGAM5L, but not PGAM5S is a prerequisite for the activation of Bax and dephosphorylation of Drp1 in arenobufagin and staurosporine induced intrinsic apoptosis. Knockdown of PGAM5L inhibits the translocation of Bax to the mitochondria and reduces mitochondrial fission. The interaction between PGAM5L and Drp1 was observed in both arenobufagin and staurosporine treated HCT116 cells, but not in HCT116 Bax(-/-) cells. Bax transfection rescues the formation of the triplex in both arenobufagin and staurosporine stimulated HCT116 Bax(-/-) cells. Arenobufagin shows remarkable anti-cancer effects both in orthotropic and heterotropic CRC models and demonstrates less toxic effects as compared with that of cisplatin. Bax-PGAM5L-Drp1 complex is detected in arenobufagin and staurosporine treated CRC cells in vitro and in arenobufagin and cisplatin treated tumor in vivo as well. In summary, our results demonstrate that Bax-PGAM5L-Drp1 complex is required for intrinsic apoptosis execution. PMID:26356820

The analysis of the frequency spectrum of neutral variants reveals a significant surplus of low frequency variants, particularly in N. ceranae, and suggests that the populations of the two pathogens are not in mutation-drift equilibrium and that they have experienced a population expansion. Most of the variation in both species occurs within honey bee colonies (between 62%-90% of the total genetic variance), although in N. apis there is evidence for differentiation between parasites isolated from distinct A. mellifera lineages (20%-34% of the total variance), specifically between those collected from lineages A and C (or M). This scenario is consistent with a long-term host-parasite relationship and contrasts with the lack of differentiation observed among host-lineages in N. ceranae (< 4% of the variance), which suggests that the spread of this emergent pathogen throughout the A. mellifera worldwide population is a recent event. Objetivo: determinar la prevalencia de la enfermedad de Crohn y la colitis ulcerosa en los enfermos celíacos y en sus familiares. Método: estudio epidemiológico prospectivo transversal en un grupo de pacientes celíacos, sus familiares de primer grado y un grupo control de características epidemiológicas similares, constituido por familiares de pacientes que acuden al Servicio de Urgencias por un problema agudo. Para detectar la existencia de colitis ulcerosa y enfermedad de Crohn en los celíacos y sus familiares, se realizó una entrevista semiestructurada. Resultados: se han incluido 86 celíacos y 432 familiares, que se han comparado con 809 controles (129 pacientes con una enfermedad aguda y 680 familiares de primer grado suyos.     Western honey bees (Apis mellifera) face an increasing number of challenges that in recent years have led to significant economic effects on apiculture, with attendant consequences for agriculture. Nosemosis is a fungal infection of honey bees caused by either Nosema apis or N. ceranae. The putative greater virulence of N. ceranae has spurred interest in understanding how it differs from N. apis. Little is known of effects of N. apis or N. ceranae on honey bee learning and memory. Following a Pavlovian model that relies on the proboscis extension reflex, we compared acquisition learning and long-term memory recall of uninfected (control) honey bees versus those inoculated with N. apis, N. ceranae, or both. We also tested whether spore intensity was associated with variation in learning and memory. Neither learning nor memory differed among treatments. There was no evidence of a relationship between spore intensity and learning, and only limited evidence of a negative effect on memory; this occurred only in the co-inoculation treatment. Our results suggest that if Nosema spp. are contributing to unusually high colony losses in recent years, the mechanism by which they may affect honey bees is probably not related to effects on learning or memory, at least as assessed by the proboscis extension reflex.     Purpose: M5L, a fully automated computer-aided detection (CAD) system for the detection and segmentation of lung nodules in thoracic computed tomography (CT), is presented and validated on several image datasets. Methods: M5L is the combination of two independent subsystems, based on the Channeler Ant Model as a segmentation tool [lung channeler ant model (lungCAM)] and on the voxel-based neural approach. The lungCAM was upgraded with a scan equalization module and a new procedure to recover the nodules connected to other lung structures; its classification module, which makes use of a feed-forward neural network, is based of a small number of features (13), so as to minimize the risk of lacking generalization, which could be possible given the large difference between the size of the training and testing datasets, which contain 94 and 1019 CTs, respectively. The lungCAM (standalone) and M5L (combined) performance was extensively tested on 1043 CT scans from three independent datasets, including a detailed analysis of the full Lung Image Database Consortium/Image Database Resource Initiative database, which is not yet found in literature. Results: The lungCAM and M5L performance is consistent across the databases, with a sensitivity of about 70% and 80%, respectively, at eight false positive findings per scan, despite the variable annotation criteria and acquisition and reconstruction conditions.     The queen is the dominant female in the honeybee colony, Apis mellifera, and controls reproduction. Queen larvae are selected by the workers and are fed a special diet (royal jelly), which determines caste. Because queens mate with many males a large number of subfamilies coexist in the colony. As a consequence, there is a considerable potential for conflict among the subfamilies over queen rearing. Here we show that honeybee queens are not reared at random but are preferentially reared from rare “royal” subfamilies, which have extremely low frequencies in the colony's worker force but a high frequency in the queens reared.

The significant intention of the proposed technique is to frame a mathematical modeling with the aid of the optimization techniques. The mathematical modeling is done by minimizing the cost and time consumed in the case of extension of the real time experiment. The proposed mathematical modeling is utilized to predict four output parameters such as compressive strength (Mpa, split tensile strength (Mpa, flexural strength (Mpa, and deflection (in mm. Here, the modeling is carried out with three different optimization techniques like genetic algorithm (GA, particle swarm optimization (PSO, and ant colony optimization (ACO with 80% of data from experiment utilized for the training and the remaining 20% for the validation. Finally, while testing, the error value is minimized and the performance obtained in the ACO for the parameters such as compressive strength, split tensile strength, flexural strength, and deflection is 91%, 98%, 87%, and 94% of predicted values, respectively, in the mathematical modeling.

    Full Text Available Ladder track, which has drawn increased attention in scientific communities, is an effective method for reducing vibrations from underground railways. In order to optimize the vibration reduction ability of ladder track, a new method, that is, the finite element method (FEM coupled with ant colony optimization (ACO, has been proposed in this paper. We describe how to build the FEM model verified by the vibration tests in the Track Vibration Abatement and Control Laboratory and how to couple the FEM with ACO. The density and elasticity modulus of the sleeper pad are optimized using this method. After optimization, the vibration acceleration level of the supporting platform in the 1–200 Hz range was reduced from 102.8 dB to 94.4 dB. The optimized density of the sleeper pad is 620 kg/m3, and the optimized elasticity modulus of the sleeper pad is 6.25 × 106 N/m2.

As faults occur and propagate throughout hardware and software layers, pervasive noti cation and handling mechanisms are necessary. This report describes an initial investigation of fault types and programming interfaces to mitigate them. Proof-of-concept APIs are presented for the frequent and important cases of memory errors and node failures, and a strategy proposed for lesystem failures. These involve changes to the operating system, runtime, I/O library, and application layers. Several of these components have been isolated and characterized, and their primary structures determined by biochemical techniques. These compounds are responsible for many toxic or allergic reactions in different organisms, such as local pain, inflammation, itching, irritation, and moderate or severe allergic reactions. The most extensively characterized Hymenoptera venoms are bee venoms, mainly from the Apis genus and also from social wasps and ant species.     Full Text Available Fundamento: Discordâncias entre diagnóstico pre e post-mortem são relatadas na literatura, podendo variar de 4,1 a 49,8% dentre os casos encaminhados para exame necroscópico, com importante repercussão no tratamento dos pacientes. Objetivo: Analisar pacientes com óbito após o transplante cardíaco e confrontar os diagnósticos pre e post-mortem. Métodos: Por meio da revisão de prontuários, foram analisados dados clínicos, presença de comorbidades, esquema de imunossupressão, exames laboratoriais, causa clínica do óbito e causa do óbito à necrópsia. Foram confrontadas, então, a causa clínica e a causa necroscópica do óbito de cada paciente. Resultados: Foram analisados 48 óbitos submetidos à necrópsia no período de 2000 a 2010; 29 (60,4% tiveram diagnósticos clínico e necroscópico concordantes, 16 (33,3% tiveram diagnósticos discordantes e três (6,3% tiveram diagnóstico não esclarecido. Entre os discordantes, 15 (31,3% apresentaram possível impacto na sobrevida e um (2,1% não apresentou impacto na sobrevida. O principal diagnóstico clínico feito equivocadamente foi o de infecção, com cinco casos (26,7% dos discordantes, seguido por rejeição hiperaguda, com quatro casos (20% dos discordantes, e tromboembolismo pulmonar, com três casos (13,3% dos discordantes. Conclusão: Discordâncias entre o diagnóstico clínico e achados da necrópsia são comumente encontradas no transplante cardíaco. Novas estratégias no aperfeiçoamento do diagnóstico clínico devem ser introduzidas, considerando-se os resultados da necrópsia para melhoria do tratamento da insuficiência cardíaca por meio do transplante cardíaco.

  1. Compositional mining of multiple object API protocols through state abstraction.

    API protocols specify correct sequences of method invocations. Despite their usefulness, API protocols are often unavailable in practice because writing them is cumbersome and error prone. Multiple object API protocols are more expressive than single object API protocols. However, the huge number of objects of typical object-oriented programs poses a major challenge to the automatic mining of multiple object API protocols: besides maintaining scalability, it is important to capture various object interactions. Current approaches utilize various heuristics to focus on small sets of methods. In this paper, we present a general, scalable, multiple object API protocols mining approach that can capture all object interactions. Our approach uses abstract field values to label object states during the mining process. We first mine single object typestates as finite state automata whose transitions are annotated with states of interacting objects before and after the execution of the corresponding method and then construct multiple object API protocols by composing these annotated single object typestates.   2. The IRMIS object model and services API

    The relational model developed for the Integrated Relational Model of Installed Systems (IRMIS) toolkit has been successfully used to capture the Advanced Photon Source (APS) control system software (EPICS process variables and their definitions). The relational tables are populated by a crawler script that parses each Input/Output Controller (IOC) start-up file when an IOC reboot is detected. User interaction is provided by a Java Swing application that acts as a desktop for viewing the process variable information. Mapping between the display objects and the relational tables was carried out with the Hibernate Object Relational Modeling (ORM) framework. Work is well underway at the APS to extend the relational modeling to include control system hardware. For this work, due in part to the complex user interaction required, the primary application development environment has shifted from the relational database view to the object oriented (Java) perspective. With this approach, the business logic is executed in Java rather than in SQL stored procedures. This paper describes the object model used to represent control system software, hardware, and interconnects in IRMIS. We also describe the services API used to encapsulate the required behaviors for creating and maintaining the complex data. In addition to the core schema and object model, many important concepts in IRMIS are captured by the services API. IRMIS is an ambitious collaborative effort for defining and developing a relational database and associated applications to comprehensively document the large and complex EPICS-based control systems of today's accelerators. The documentation effort includes process variables, control system hardware, and interconnections.     The VUV undulator-based high resolution SU5 beamline, designed to operate in the 5-45 eV photon energy range, is under construction at Super-ACO. It is composed of three toroidal mirrors around a 6.65 m Eagle off-plane normal incidence monochromator, whose induced-astigmatism is negligible owing to an horizontal focusing onto the gratings. With an optical design minimizing the aberrations and optimizing the throughput through the entrance slit, and with a careful choice of the optical coatings, the SU5 beamline should provide in the near future more than 1010 ph/s at the sample level for a 1/50000 bandwidth in the 5-25 eV energy range.     We present the experimental evaluation of a R134a/CO2 cascade refrigeration plant designed for low evaporation temperature in commercial refrigeration applications. The test bench incorporates two single-stage vapour compression cycles driven by semi hermetic compressors coupled thermally through two brazed plate cascade heat exchangers working in parallel and controlled by electronic expansion valves. The experimental evaluation (45 steady-states) covers evaporating temperatures from −40 to −30 °C and condensing from 30 to 50 °C. In each steady-state, we conducted a sweep of the condensing temperature of the low temperature cycle with speed variation of the high temperature compressor. Here, the energy performance of the plant is analysed, focussing on the compressors' performance, temperature difference in the cascade heat exchanger, cooling capacity, COP and compressors discharge temperatures. - Highlights: • The experimental evaluation of a R134a/CO2 cascade refrigeration plant is presented. • Temperature difference in cascade heat exchanger varied from 3.3 to 5.3 °C. • Variation of intermediate level produced maximum COP variations of 6%. • Cooling capacity ranged from 4.5 kW (−40 and 40 °C) to 7.5 kW (−30 and 30 °C). • COP ranged from 1.05 (−40 and 40 °C) to 1.65 (−30 and 30 °C)

    GIANT API provides biomedical researchers programmatic access to tissue-specific and global networks in humans and model organisms, and associated tools, which includes functional re-prioritization of existing genome-wide association study (GWAS) data. Using tissue-specific interaction networks, researchers are able to predict relationships between genes specific to a tissue or cell lineage, identify the changing roles of genes across tissues and uncover disease-gene associations. Additionally, GIANT API enables computational tools like NetWAS, which leverages tissue-specific networks for re-prioritization of GWAS results. The web services covered by the API include 144 tissue-specific functional gene networks in human, global functional networks for human and six common model organisms and the NetWAS method. GIANT API conforms to the REST architecture, which makes it stateless, cacheable and highly scalable. It can be used by a diverse range of clients including web browsers, command terminals, programming languages and standalone apps for data analysis and visualization.     Full Text Available A complete reference genome of the Apis mellifera Filamentous virus (AmFV was determined using Illumina Hiseq sequencing. The AmFV genome is a double stranded DNA molecule of approximately 498,500 nucleotides with a GC content of 50.8%. It encompasses 247 non-overlapping open reading frames (ORFs, equally distributed on both strands, which cover 65% of the genome. While most of the ORFs lacked threshold sequence alignments to reference protein databases, twenty-eight were found to display significant homologies with proteins present in other large double stranded DNA viruses. Remarkably, 13 ORFs had strong similarity with typical baculovirus domains such as PIFs (per os infectivity factor genes: pif-1, pif-2, pif-3 and p74 and BRO (Baculovirus Repeated Open Reading Frame. The putative AmFV DNA polymerase is of type B, but is only distantly related to those of the baculoviruses. The ORFs encoding proteins involved in nucleotide metabolism had the highest percent identity to viral proteins in GenBank. Other notable features include the presence of several collagen-like, chitin-binding, kinesin and pacifastin domains. Due to the large size of the AmFV genome and the inconsistent affiliation with other large double stranded DNA virus families infecting invertebrates, AmFV may belong to a new virus family.

    Little attention has been paid to the drone honeybee (Apis mellifera ligustica) which is a haploid individual carrying only the set of alleles that it inherits from its mother. Molecular mechanisms underlying drone embryogenesis are poorly understood. This study evaluated protein expression profiles of drone embryogenesis at embryonic ages of 24, 48 and 72h. More than 100 reproducible proteins were analyzed by mass spectrometry on 2D electrophoresis gels. Sixty-two proteins were significantly changed at the selected three experimental age points. Expression of the metabolic energy requirement-related protein peaked at the embryonic age of 48h, whereas development and metabolizing amino acid-related proteins expressed optimally at 72h. Cytoskeleton, protein folding and antioxidant-related proteins were highly expressed at 48 and 72h. Protein networks of the identified proteins were constructed and protein expressions were validated at the transcription level. This first proteomic study of drone embryogenesis in the honeybee may provide geneticists an exact timetable and candidate protein outline for further manipulations of drone stem cells. We showed earlier the presence of superparamagnetic magnetite in iron granules formed in honeybees, and subscribed to the notion that external magnetic fields may cause expansion or contraction of the superparamagnetic particles in an orientation-specific manner, relaying the signal via cytoskeleton (Hsu and Li 1994. In this study, we established a size-density purification procedure, with which quantitative amount of iron granules was obtained from honey bee trophocytes and characterized; the density of iron granules was determined to be 1.25 g/cm(3. While we confirmed the presence of superparamagnetic magnetite in the iron granules, we observed changes in the size of the magnetic granules in the trophycytes upon applying additional magnetic field to the cells. A concomitant release of calcium ion was observed by confocal microscope. This size fluctuation triggered the increase of intracellular Ca(+2 , which was inhibited by colchicines and latrunculin B, known to be blockers for microtubule and microfilament syntheses, respectively. The associated cytoskeleton may thus relay the magnetosignal, initiating a neural response. A model for the mechanism of magnetoreception in honeybees is proposed, which may be applicable to most, if not all, magnetotactic organisms.

    Full Text Available El carcinoma papilar, variante esclerosante difusa, corresponde al 2% de todos los carcinomas papilares de la tiroides. Se caracteriza por comprometer de manera difusa y bilateral a la glándula tiroides. Clínicamente se manifiesta con metástasis ganglionares y pulmonares, afectando predominantemente a mujeres jóvenes. Se describe un caso de taponamiento cardíaco como presentación inicial de un carcinoma papilar de tiroides variante esclerosante difusa. Una mujer de 32 años concurrió al servicio de emergencias médicas refiriendo epigastralgia y tos seca. Durante el examen físico se constató hipotensión arterial, taquicardia y ruidos cardíacos disminuidos. Se realizó un ecocardiograma, observándose derrame pericárdico. Por medio de una pericardiocentesis se obtuvo líquido pericárdico, cuyo análisis mostró células neoplásicas. Durante la evolución la paciente presentó recurrencia del derrame pericárdico por lo que se realizó una ventana pleuropericárdica, detectándose durante la cirugía una lesión nodular subpleural, la cual fue biopsiada e informada posteriormente como una metástasis de carcinoma papilar vinculable a origen tiroideo. Se realizó una tiroidectomía total con linfadenectomía cervical bilateral. El diagnóstico final fue carcinoma papilar, variante esclerosante difusa. Esta variante infiltra el tejido conectivo de los espacios interfoliculares, simulando una tiroiditis y se caracteriza por una permeación vascular temprana. En oposición a la variante clásica, la esclerosante difusa presenta mayor agresividad y mayor tasa de recurrencia. El carcinoma papilar de tiroides debe tenerse presente como diagnóstico diferencial en nuestro medio, en todas aquellas lesiones neoplásicas papilares metastásicas, más aún si se trata de mujeres jóvenes.

Honey bees have excellent olfactory learning, but the role of DNA methylation in memory formation has, to date, only been studied in Apis mellifera. We inhibited DNA methylation by inhibiting DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) with zebularine (zeb) and studied the resulting effects upon olfactory acquisition and extinction memory in two honey bee species, Apis cerana and A. mellifera. We used the proboscis extension reflex (PER) assay to measure memory. We provide the first demonstration that DNA methylation is also important in the olfactory extinction learning of A. cerana. DNMT did not reduce acquisition learning in either species. However, zeb bidirectionally and differentially altered extinction learning in both species. In particular, zeb provided 1h before acquisition learning improved extinction memory retention in A. mellifera, but reduced extinction memory retention in A. cerana. The reasons for these differences are unclear, but provide a basis for future studies to explore species-specific differences in the effects of methylation on memory formation. PMID:27262427

    It makes strategic and business sense for payers and providers to collaborate on how to take substantial cost out of the healthcare delivery system. Acting independently, neither medical groups, hospitals nor health plans have the optimal mix of resources and incentives to significantly reduce costs. Payers have core assets such as marketing, claims data, claims processing, reimbursement systems and capital. It would be cost prohibitive for all but the largest providers to develop these capabilities in order to compete directly with insurers. Likewise, medical groups and hospitals are positioned to foster financial interdependence among providers and coordinate the continuum of patient illnesses and care settings. Payers and providers should commit to reasonable clinical and cost goals, and share resources to minimize expenses and financial risks. It is in the interest of payers to work closely with providers on risk-management strategies because insurers need synergy with ACOs to remain cost competitive. It is in the interest of ACOs to work collaboratively with payers early on to develop reasonable and effective performance benchmarks.     Pectins were extracted from apple pomace with Celluclast 1.5L at a dose of 25, 50 and 75 μl per 1g of material. In obtained pectin, the galacturonic acid (GalA) content, the neutral sugars (NS) profile, the degree of methylation (DM) and acetylation (DAc), the molecular mass, protein, ash and polyphenol levels as well as antioxidant and antitumor activity were determined. The lowest dose of enzymatic preparation resulted in the yield of pectin isolation comparable with acidic treatment (15.3%). Application of higher dose caused further, almost 4% increase in polymer recovery. Enzymatically isolated pectin was characterised by larger molecular mass and contained more GalA of higher DM and DAc than polymer extracted with acid. It was also richer in protein and polyphenols, and had different NS profile, which resulted in higher antiradical activity as well as the ability to inhibit the proliferation and invasion of Caco-2 adenocarcinoma cells.     The North American automotive industry is presently facing the challenge of a recently signed energy bill increasing corporate average fuel economy standards to 35 mpg (6.7 L/km) by 2020, inclusive of cars and trucks. The passing of this bill is coincident with crude oil costs hovering in the $130USD / barrel range, retail gasoline costs in the $4USD / gallon range, and mounting evidence on CO2 emissions and global warming. Ford Motor Company has anticipated these trends, has invested in the development of fuel efficient engine technologies, and is now deploying these technologies in volume to deliver both a meaningful and sustainable response to the above challenges. Leading the deployment curve is a technology publically announced as EcoBoost, representing the application of direct fuel injection and turbocharging to an advanced gasoline engine. Ford has previously reported the fundamentals of this technology which enables a significant fuel economy improvement via engine downsizing, and a significant performance improvement via engine dynamic response. As applied to 14 and V6 engine architectures, Ford has announced plans to deploy up to 750,000 EcoBoost engines worldwide by 2013 CY, with first application in the form of a 3.5L V6 EcoBoost engine in the 2010 MY Lincoln MKS luxury sedan. This paper summaries the development of the 3.5L V6 EcoBoost engine and its associated as-installed systems. Combustion, fuel, boost, and power conversion systems are discussed in detail with emphasis on the efficiency and value of these systems which enable a singular engine design to be applied across a wide range of applications. The results indicated that this inhibitor was a mixed-type inhibitor, with a maximum percentage inhibition efficiency of approximately 92% in the presence of 5 mM inhibitor. Atomic force microscopy revealed that a protective film was formed on the surface of the inhibited sample. The adsorption of the inhibitor was found to conform to the Langmuir isotherm with the standard adsorption free energy of −21.08 kJ mol−1.

    目的:克隆向日葵中的ACC氧化酶基因(HaACO1),并对其进行生物信息学分析及盐胁迫表达分析,为理解向日葵ACC氧化酶生理功能并加强对ACO基因的利用奠定基础.方法:以前期从盐胁迫的内葵杂4号根中获得的ACC氧化酶基因片段4-4-7TDF(KM823963)为基础,通过RT-PCR和5'/3' RACE技术克隆ACO基因的全长cDNA序列,利用生物信息学软件对获得的eDNA序列及编码的蛋白质序列进行分析.同时采用PCR方法克隆基因组DNA(genemic DNA,gDNA)序列,并对其进行结构分析.利用实时荧光定量PCR分析NaCl胁迫下向日葵根、下胚轴、叶中HaACO1的表达量和不同NaCl浓度及不同胁迫时间下根中HaACO1的表达量.结果:HaACO1的cDNA序列全长为1 135bp,其开放阅读框为942bp,编码313个氨基酸.预测其分子质量和等电点分别为35.84kDa和5.13,基因登录号为KP966508.HaACO1与已报道的多种植物的ACO基因核苷酸序列及其推导的氨基酸序列有较高的相似性,分别为76% ~ 83%和77% ~88%.gDNA起始密码子至终止密码子序列长1 018bp,包含2个外显子和1个内含子,基因登录号为KP988289.实时荧光定量PCR分析表明向日葵HaACO1在不同器官及不同NaCl浓度、不同时间诱导下存在特异性表达差异.结论:获得的向日葵HaACO1是植物ACO家族成员之一,该基因应答盐胁迫具有独特的表达模式.

    ACO 1703 is a cluster recently found to have a variety of strongly lensed objects: there is a quintuply-imaged system at z=0.888 and several other lensed objects from z=2.2 to 3.0 (the cluster itself is at z=0.28). It is not difficult to model the lens, as previous work has already done. However, lens models are generically non-unique. We generate ensembles of models to explore the non-uniqueness. When the full range of source redshifts is included, all models are close to \\rho \\propto r^{-1} out to 200 kpc. But if the quint is omitted, both shallower and steeper models (e.g., \\rho \\propto r^{-2}) are possible. The reason is that the redshift contrast between the quint and the other sources gives a good measurement of the enclosed mass at two different radii, thus providing a good estimate of the mass profile in between. This article presents and analyze a new method based on Ant Colony Optimization (ACO algorithm with considerations to precedence and communication cost for task scheduling problem. In the mentioned method in addition to optimization of finish time, average of waiting time and number of needed processors are also optimized. In this method, by using of a new heuristic list, an algorithm based on ant colony is proposed. The results obtained in comparison with the latest similar models of random search algorithms, proves the higher efficiency of algorithm.

    NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Centers (GES DISC) is the data center assigned to archive and distribute current AIRS, ACOS data and data from the upcoming OCO-2 mission. The GES DISC archives and supports data containing information on CO2 as well as other atmospheric composition, atmospheric dynamics, modeling and precipitation. Along with the data stewardship, an important mission of GES DISC is to facilitate access to and enhance the usability of data as well as to broaden the user base. GES DISC strives to promote the awareness of science content and novelty of the data by working with Science Team members and releasing news articles as appropriate. Analysis of events that are of interest to the general public, and that help in understanding the goals of NASA Earth Observing missions, have been among most popular practices.Users have unrestricted access to a user-friendly search interface, Mirador, that allows temporal, spatial, keyword and event searches, as well as an ontology-driven drill down. Variable subsetting, format conversion, quality screening, and quick browse, are among the services available in Mirador. The majority of the GES DISC data are also accessible through OPeNDAP (Open-source Project for a Network Data Access Protocol) and WMS (Web Map Service). These services add more options for specialized subsetting, format conversion, image viewing and contributing to data interoperability.

Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero DAOP 6 Yogyakarta, dibukanya rute baru Kereta Api Sriwedari Ekspress yang melayani delapan kali perjalanan hanya  dengan rute Yogya – Solo saja diharapkan kereta ini dapat memfasilitasi pergerakan penumpang antar dua daerah tersebut. Namun untuk mengetahui kinerja dari kereta api ini sesuai dengan Surat Keterangan Dirjen Perhubungan Darat No. 687 Tahun 2002, perlu ditinjau dari segi faktor muat, jumlah penumpang yang diangkut, waktu tunggu penumpang, ketepatan waktu kedatangan dan keberangkatan kereta dan kenyamanan penumpang. Dalam penelitian digunakan metode survey untuk mendapatkan nilai – nilai dari kinerja kereta api Sriwedari berupa survey observasi atau pengamatan lapangan.  Adapun  analisis yang digunakan untuk perhitungan waktu tempuh, waktu henti dan waktu tunda menggunakan uji hipotesis 1 sample t-test, karena uji ini paling memenuhi untuk melihat diterima atau tidaknya keterlambatan dari waktu kereta. Sedangkan untuk perhitungan load factor dan kenyamanan duduk dan berdiri berdasarkan perhitungan kapasitas dari Vukan R. Vuchic. Dari hasil analisis didapatkan waktu tempuh rata-rata untuk arah Yogyakarta selama 1 jam 14 menit dan untuk arah Solo selama 1 jam 12 menit. Waktu henti yang didapat dari seluruh jadwal perjalanan kereta arah Yogyakarta sebesar 3 menit, untuk arah Solo sebesar 5 menit.     Full Text Available En nuestro país no hay un registro estandarizado de los eventos cardíacos que requieren reanimación cerebro-cardio-pulmonar (RCCP siguiendo los lineamientos "Utstein". El propósito de este estudio fue determinar la calidad de los registros extrahospitalarios de paro cardíaco en el adulto, en Bogotá-Colombia. Entre enero y marzo de 2005 se realizó un análisis retrospectivo de los casos que correspondieron a paro cardíaco en el adulto atendidos por el "Centro Regulador de Urgencias del Distrito (CRU". El estudio reveló un registro deficiente de los eventos que requirieron RCCP realizados a nivel prehospitalario, e identificó al trauma como causa de paro cardíaco en 22% de los casos, una cifra particularmente elevada si se compara con los reportes mundiales, que oscilan entre 5% y 8%. Recomienda la estandarización del registro de paro cardíaco en el adulto, para lo cual se sugiere utilizar el formato de registro que sigue los lineamientos "Utstein".There is not a standardized registry form of cardiac events requiring cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR in our country such as the Utstein style. The purpose of this study was to determine the quality of the registries of out-ofhospital cardiac arrests in Bogotá-Colombia. A retrospective survey of registries of cardiac events assisted by a regulatory center "Centro Regulador de Urgencias del Distrito (CRU" was conducted, between January and March, 2005. The study reveals a poor registry of outof-hospital cardiac arrest in Bogotá-Colombia, and identifies trauma as the cause of cardiac arrest in 22% of cases, a particularly high figure compared with 5-8% registered worldwide. Recommend the standardization of the registry form of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and suggest to use the "uniform reporting of data following cardiac arrest - the Utstein style". This introduces challenges in the management and utilization of this data in software development. Although efforts are underway to create a standard format for the transmission and storage of biological data, this objective has yet to be fully realized. Results This work describes an application programming interface (API that provides a framework for developing an effective biological knowledge ontology for Java-based software projects. The API provides a robust framework for the data acquisition and management needs of an ontology implementation. In addition, the API contains classes to assist in creating GUIs to represent this data visually. Conclusions The Knowledge Discovery Object Model (KDOM API is particularly useful for medium to large applications, or for a number of smaller software projects with common characteristics or objectives.     Full Text Available No Instituto do Coração, de março de 1985 a fevereiro de 1986,11 pacientes foram submetidos a transplante cardíaco ortotópico. Eram todos do sexo masculino, com idade variando de 39 a 54 anos; 6 com cardiopatia isquémica, 4 com cardiomiopatia dilatada e um com cardiomiopatia chagásica. Foi realizado estudo hemodinâmico através de catéter de Swan-Ganz, no pré-operatório, no pós-operatório, após estabilização na unidade de recuperação, e trinta ou mais dias após o transplante. Os dados mostram melhora progressiva em relação ao índice cardíaco, pressão em artéria pulmonar, pressão de capilar pulmonar, resistência vascular pulmonar e resistência vascular sistêmica. Três dos 11 pacientes apresentaram disfunção renal transitória no pós-operatório imediato e que regrediram até o 15º dia, enquanto que 2 pacientes apresentaram aumento moderado da creatinina plasmática. Apenas 3 pacientes não apresentaram qualquer episódio de rejeição; nos demais, esses episódios foram um diagnóstico histológico sem repercussões clínicas. Complicações infecciosas ocorreram em 9 pacientes e foram de fácil controle clínico. No pós-operatório tardio, a hipertensão esteve presente em 8 pacientes, sendo mais acentuada em 2 deles.   6. Changes in oxidative stress in transgenic RNAi ACO1 tomato fruit during ripening

    Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum L.) is the second most cultivated vegetable in the world and widely used as a system for studying the role of ethylene during fruit ripening. Our objective was to study the oxidative stress and antioxidative metabolism during ripening of non transgenic tomato and transgenic line-21 tomato which reduced ethylene. The line-21 of transgenic tomato plants (RNAi ACO1) had lower ethylene production and longer shelf-life more than 32 days as compared to the wild-type fruits which have very short shelf-life. In this study, tomato fruit were divided into five different stages (MG: mature green 5%, B: breaker 25%, T: turning 50%, O: orange75%, RR: red ripe100%). The activity of lipoxygenase (LOX) and lipid peroxidation (MDA) were measured to assess changes in oxidative stress. The LOX activity and MDA content decreased significantly obtaining 2.6-fold and 1.2-fold, respectively, as compared to the wild type fruit. However, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities were increased to 1.9 and 1.2 folds from the mature green to the fully ripe stage in transgenic tomatoes. Furthermore, the wild type tomato increases 1.3 in SOD and 1.6 in CAT activities. The overall results indicate that the wild type tomato fruit showed a faster rate of ripening, parallel to decline in the rate of enzymatic antioxidative systems as compared to the transgenic line-21 tomato fruit.     Full Text Available Eukaryotic genomes contain significant amounts of transposons and repetitive DNA elements, which, if transcribed, can be detrimental to the organism. Expression of these elements is suppressed by establishment of repressive chromatin modifications. In Arabidopsis thaliana, they are silenced by the siRNA-mediated transcriptional gene silencing pathway where long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs produced by RNA Polymerase V (Pol V guide ARGONAUTE4 (AGO4 to chromatin and attract enzymes that establish repressive chromatin modifications. It is unknown how chromatin modifying enzymes are recruited to chromatin. We show through chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP that SPT5L/KTF1, a silencing factor and a homolog of SPT5 elongation factors, binds chromatin at loci subject to transcriptional silencing. Chromatin binding of SPT5L/KTF1 occurs downstream of RNA Polymerase V, but independently from the presence of 24-nt siRNA. We also show that SPT5L/KTF1 and AGO4 are recruited to chromatin in parallel and independently of each other. As shown using methylation-sensitive restriction enzymes, binding of both AGO4 and SPT5L/KTF1 is required for DNA methylation and repressive histone modifications of several loci. We propose that the coordinate binding of SPT5L and AGO4 creates a platform for direct or indirect recruitment of chromatin modifying enzymes.

  10. SmartPATH: An Efficient Hybrid ACO-GA Algorithm for Solving the Global Path Planning Problem of Mobile Robots

    Full Text Available Path planning is a fundamental optimization problem that is crucial for the navigation of a mobile robot. Among the vast array of optimization approaches, we focus in this paper on Ant Colony Optimization (ACO and Genetic Algorithms (GA for solving the global path planning problem in a static environment, considering their effectiveness in solving such a problem. Our objective is to design an efficient hybrid algorithm that takes profit of the advantages of both ACO and GA approaches for the sake of maximizing the chance to find the optimal path even under real-time constraints. In this paper, we present smartPATH, a new hybrid ACO-GA algorithm that relies on the combination of an improved ACO algorithm (IACO for efficient and fast path selection, and a modified crossover operator to reduce the risk of falling into a local minimum. We demonstrate through extensive simulations that smartPATH outperforms classical ACO (CACO, GA algorithms. It also outperforms the Dijkstra exact method in solving the path planning problem for large graph environments. It improves the solution quality up to 57% in comparison with CACO and reduces the execution time up to 83% as compared to Dijkstra for large and dense graphs. In addition, the experimental results on a real robot shows that smartPATH finds the optimal path with a probability up to 80% with a small gap not exceeding 1m in 98%.
