A statistical treatment has been applied to interpret the experimental data on the Xe M-shell vacancy production in slow 1.05 MeV Xe-Xe collisions and is shown to give better agreement with experiment than that of the molecular-orbital models.
The outcome was retrospectively examined and prognostic factors were discussed for arterial chemo-infusion therapy (ACT) through an implanted reservoir system and radiation therapy (RT) in patients with unresectable intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (CCC). ACT plus RT were conducted to 25 patients (mean age 61.7 y, M/F 12/13, stage III-IVB) during 10 years from 1996 to 2005 with various regimens of cisplatin (CDDP), 5- fluorouracil (FU), epirubicin (FARM), mitomycin C (MMC) plus 39-50 Gy of radiation in a fractionated manner partly involving internal RT (2 cases, 15 Gy) and RT for metastatic bone (1, 25 Gy). The survival rates at 1, 2 and 3 years after ACT+RT were respectively 52.5, 43.7 and 28.1%; total efficacy (PR) was 36% (9/25) at 6 months; and significantly good prognostic factors were found to be female and absence of metastasis remote and/or lymphatic around artery. Authors concluded that ACT+RT was a meaningful treatment for highly advanced non-respectable CCC and that ...
We demonstrated direct assimilation of cellooligosaccharide using Escherichia coli displaying beta-glucosidase (BGL). BGL from Thermobifida fusca YX (Tfu0937) was displayed on the E. coli cell surface using a novel anchor protein named Blc. This strain was grown successfully on 0.2% cellobiose, and the optical density at 600 nm (OD(600)) was 1.05 after 20 h. PMID:21742905
Ion-photon and ion-Auger-electron coincidence measurements have been performed to study the impact parameter dependence of Xe M-shell excitation in 1.05 MeV Xe/sup 3 +/-Xe collisions. The experimental results are found to be consistent with the prediction of the molecular orbital model of atomic collisions. The average fluorescence yield for the Xe M shell is found to be strongly dependent on the impact parameter. This is ascribed to the production of highly charged Xe ions in close collisions.
We have studied the ion-beam synthesis of GaSb nanocrystals in Si by high-fluence '' hot '' implantation of Sb and Ga ions followed by thermal annealing. The Rutherford backscattering, transmission electron microscopy/transmission electron diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence were used to characterize the implanted layers. It was found that the nanocrystal size increases from 5 to 60 nm in the samples annealed at 900"oC up to 20-90 nm in those annealed at 1100"oC. For the samples annealed at 900"oC a broad band in the region of 0.75-1.05 eV is registered in the photoluminescence spectra. The nature of this photoluminescence band is discussed. (author)
We studied the magnetic dipole moments #mu# of even-odd C isotopes, ranging from proton-rich to neutron-rich nuclei, with antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD). The results are in good agreement with the experimental data. In the "9C ground state the total intrinsic spin of the protons is found to be nonzero (S_p#not =#0), which is unusual in even-odd nuclei. The interesting point is that the spin-orbit force breaks slightly the coupling off of intrinsic spins of the even nucleon group in isospin T=3/2 nuclei. This result is consistent with the newly measured #mu# data that, when combined with "9Li data, indicate an unusual left-angle #sigma# right-angle value larger than unity. A #mu# moment -1.05#mu#_N of "1"7C is theoretically predicted. We also show a good reproduction of E2 transition data. copyright 1996 The American Physical Society.
Excellent silicided shallow p{sup +}n junctions have been successfully achieved by the implantation of BF{sub 2}{sup +} ions into thin Pd{sub 2}Si films on Si substrates to a dose of 5 {times} 10{sup 15} cm{sup {minus}2} and subsequent low temperature (even at 550 C) furnace annealing. The formed junctions have been characterized for respective implantation conditions. In this experiment, the implant energy is the key role in obtaining a low leakage diode. Reverse current density of about 3 nA/cm{sup 2} and an ideality factor of about 1.05 can be attained by the implantation of BF{sub 2}{sup +} ions at 80 keV and subsequent annealing at 550 C. The junction depth is about 0.09 {mu}m, measured by the spread resistance method. As compared with the results of unimplanted specimens, the implantation of BF{sub 2}{sup +} ions into a thin Pd{sub 2}Si layer can stabilize the silicide film and prevent it from forming islands during high temperature annealing.
In this report we assessed retrospectively the usefulness of Thallium-201 chloride scintigraphy for diagnosing malignant tumors of the maxillofacial region. Thallium-201 chloride scintigraphy was performed on 74 patients with malignant tumors and 8 patients with benign tumors, and a retention index was calculated from the early and delayed scintigrams (delayed accumulation ratio/ early accumulation ratio). This retention index depended on the blood flow of tumors and the affinity of tumors with Thallium-201 chloride. The retention index was large for malignant tumors (avg.: 1.05) and small for benign tumors (avg.: 0.78). Concerning the degree of malignancy (the histological type and the degree of tumor involvement), the retention index was higher in highly malignant tumors (1.20 for poorly-differentiated tumors and 1.19 for aggressive-involvement-type tumors) and lower for tumors of low malignancy (1.02 for well-differentiated tumors and 0.98 for low ...
We measured the volume of the supratentorial ventricles in 39 consecutive children with myelomeningocele (MMC) and associated hydrocephalus, using a stereological method based on the Cavalieri theorem of systematic sampling. We distinguished the following groups: newborns before and after cerebrospinal fluid shunting (14), a somewhat larger group of newborns with an untreated MMC-associated hydrocephalus (25) and a group of shunted children at a mean age of 1.5 years (28). We paid special attention to the shape of the lateral ventricles, looking separately at the anterior and posterior halves. The measurements were compared with a healthy control group (10) and with children with hydrocephalus unrelated to MMC (15). The average volume ratio of the posterior to the anterior half of the lateral ventricles was 1.05 #+-# 0.39 in non-hydrocephalic children, 1.11 #+-# 0.55 in untreated hydrocephalic children without MMC, and 2.15 #+-# 0.65 in MMC-associated hydrocephalus ...
The use of global three-dimensional (3-D) models with satellite observations of CO2 in inverse modeling studies is an area of growing importance for understanding Earth s carbon cycle. Here we use the GEOS-Chem model (version 8-02-01) CO2 mode with multiple modifications in order to assess their impact on CO2 forward simulations. Modifications include CO2 surface emissions from shipping (0.19 PgC yr 1), 3-D spatially-distributed emissions from aviation (0.16 PgC yr 1), and 3-D chemical production of CO2 (1.05 PgC yr 1). Although CO2 chemical production from the oxidation of CO, CH4 and other carbon gases is recognized as an important contribution to global CO2, it is typically accounted for by conversion from its precursors at the surface rather than in the free troposphere. We base our model 3-D spatial distribution of CO2 chemical production on monthly-averaged loss rates of CO (a key precursor and intermediate in the oxidation of organic carbon) and apply an ...
The behavior of afterglow (AG), thermoluminescence (TL), infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) and phototransferred TL (PTTL) under thermal and/or infrared (IR) stimulation in blue (470 nm) light illuminated at room temperature (RT) SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ is presented. The TL glow curve consists of four peaks with maxima at about 340, 430, 560 and 680 K. The 340 and 440 K peaks are described well by second order kinetics with activation energies of 0.83 and 1.05 eV, respectively. The AG decay is fitted by the Becquerel's law with exponent 1.5 and correlates well with the thermal emptying of the traps responsible for the 340 K peak. The 340 and 430 K TL peak traps are destroyed under IR (830 nm) stimulation creating IRSL. IR stimulation after illumination with blue light and preliminary heating restore partially the 340 and 430 K TL peaks by phototransfer from deeper traps. The shape of the IRSL decay curves depends strongly on the preheating temperature and is ...
Qualitative technetium Tc 99m bone scintigraphy using phosphate compounds and gallium 67 scintigraphy were described as a helpful means in diagnosing necrotizing external otitis (NEO). They were, however, claimed to be nonspecific. Quantitative Tc 99m methylene diphosphonate bone scintigraphy and gallium 67 scintigraphy were performed in eight patients with NEO and in 20 patients with severe external otitis, in order to prove usefulness of scintigraphy in the diagnosis of NEO. Ratios of lesion to nonlesion for bone scintigraphy were 1.67 {plus minus} 0.16 in patients with NEO and 1.08 {plus minus} 0.09 in patients with severe external otitis, and for gallium 67 scintigraphy they were 1.35 {plus minus} 0.24 in NEO patients and 1.05 {plus minus} 0.03 in patients with severe external otitis. There was no difference in uptake between diabetic patients with severe external otitis and nondiabetic patients. The scintigraphic studies were also evaluated using a qualitative ...

The Reduced-Moderation Water Reactor (RMWR) is a next generation water-cooled reactor, based on the experienced light water reactor (LWR) technology, aiming at effective utilization of uranium resources, high burn-up and long operation cycle and plutonium multiple recycling. These characteristics can be achieved by the high conversion ratio from {sup 238}U to {sup 239}Pu resulted from the higher neutron energy spectrum in comparison to conventional LWRs. Considering the extension of LWR utilization, Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) started the research on it in 1997 and then started a collaboration in the conceptual design study with the Japan Atomic Power Company (JAPC) in 1998, under technical cooperation with three Japanese reactor vendors. In the core design study of the RMWR, several basic core designs with the high conversion ratio more than 1 and the negative void reactivity coefficient have been proposed, and then, subsequent investigation on the effects of ...
We present a high-statistics calculation of nucleon electromagnetic form factors in N{sub f}=2+1 lattice QCD using domain wall quarks on fine lattices, to attain a new level of precision in systematic and statistical errors. Our calculations use 32{sup 3}x64 lattices with lattice spacing a=0.084 fm for pion masses of 297, 355, and 403 MeV, and we perform an overdetermined analysis using on the order of 3600 to 7000 measurements to calculate nucleon electric and magnetic form factors up to Q{sup 2{approx_equal}}1.05 GeV{sup 2}. Results are shown to be consistent with those obtained using valence domain wall quarks with improved staggered sea quarks, and using coarse domain wall lattices. We determine the isovector Dirac radius r{sub 1}{sup v}, Pauli radius r{sub 2}{sup v} and anomalous magnetic moment {kappa}{sub v}. We also determine connected contributions to the corresponding isoscalar observables. We extrapolate these observables to the physical pion mass using ...
The first part of a systematic investigation is presented of surface treatments affecting the fatigue behavior of smooth and notched quenched and tempered (Q and T) specimens made of a B-Mn SS2131 ({approx}AISI 15B21H) steel. In this part, the effects of plasma nitriding (nitriding temperature=480 C, time=24 h) on the fatigue strength and notch sensitivity were investigated. Constant stress amplitude plane reversed bending fatigue tests (R=-1) at 47 Hz were conducted using cylindrical plasma nitriding (PN) and Q and T steel specimens with K{sub t}=1.05 and 1.7. The compound layer was found to consists of {epsilon}-phase and {gamma}`-phase. S-N curves show that plasma nitriding improves the fatigue limit by 53 and 115% of Q and T smooth and notched specimens, respectively. The fatigue strength of smooth specimens is improved through the whole fatigue life but only for long fatigue lives for notched specimens. Plasma nitriding reverses the low notch sensitivity (at ...
We report the first observation of the radiative decay B^0 -> \\phi K^0 \\gamma using a data sample of 772 x 10^6 B B-bar pairs collected at the \\Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We observe a signal of 37+/-8 events with a significance of 5.4 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties. The measured branching fraction is ${\\cal B}(B^0 -> \\phi K^0 \\gamma) = (2.74\\pm 0.60 \\pm 0.32) \\times 10^{-6}$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. We also report the first measurements of time-dependent CP violation parameters: ${\\mathcal S}_{\\phi K_S^0 \\gamma} = +0.74^{+0.72}_{-1.05} (stat)^{+0.10}_{-0.24} (syst)$ and ${\\mathcal A}_{\\phi K_S^0 \\gamma} = +0.35 +/- 0.58 (stat)^{+0.23}_{-0.10} (syst)$. Furthermore, we measure ${\\mathcal B}(B^+ -> \\phi K^+ \\gamma) = (2.48 +/- 0.30 +/- 0.24) x 10^{-6}$, ${\\mathcal A}_{CP} = -0.03 +/- 0.11 +/- 0.08$ and find ...
The mechanical properties of metal stents are important parameters in the consideration of stent design, matched to resist arterial recoil and vascular spasm. The purpose of this study was to develop a system for a standardized quantitative evaluation of the mechanical characteristics of various coronary stents. Several types of stents were compressed by external hydrostatic pressure. The stent diameter was assessed by placing a pair of small ultrasonic sono-crystals on the stent. From pressure-strain diagrams the ultimate strength and radial stiffness for each stent were determined. For all stents, except the MICRO-II and the Wiktor stent, the diameter decreased homogeneously until an ultimate compressive strength was exceeded, causing an abrupt collapse. Expanded to 3 mm, the mechanical behavior of the beStent, the Crown and the Palmaz-Schatz stent (PS153-series) were comparable. The spiral articulated Palmaz-Schatz stent showed twice the strength (1.26 atm) of the PS-153 (0.65 atm). ...
Effects of helium and hydrogen production on irradiation hardening of martensitic steel F82H (Fe-8Cr-2W-0.2V-0.04Ta-0.1C) were examined by dual or triple beam experiments. The effects of tempering and cold working were also examined. The irradiations were performed at about 500degC to 50 dpa under simultaneous dual beams of 10.5 MeV Fe"3"+ and 1.05 MeV He"+ or triple beams of those and 380 keV H"+ ions. The value of appm-He/dpa for the dual ion beams was about 15, and the values of appm-He/dpa and appm-H/dpa for the triple ion beams were 15 and 15 (or 150), respectively. The hardness of the irradiated specimens measured at room temperature using a micro indentation after the irradiations. Irradiation softening and hardening was observed in F82H-std, F82H+20%CW and a non-tempered F82H steels irradiated at about 500degC to 18 and 50 dpa, respectively, by dual ion beams. The hardness of the specimens irradiated at about 500degC to 18 dpa under triple ion beams was ...
Effect of helium and hydrogen production on radiation-hardening of F82H irradiated by dual or triple beam condition were investigated. The specimens used were four types of ferritic martensitic steels of F82H-std (Fe-8Cr-2W-0.2V-0.04Ta-0.1C) steels tempered at 750degC for 60 minutes, 20% cold worked F82H steel, F82H tempered for 10 minutes and non-tempered F82H steels. The irradiation was performed at 450degC to 50 dpa under simultaneous dual beams of 10.5 MeV Fe"3"+ and 1.05 MeV He"+ or triple beams of those and 380 keV H"+ ions. The ratios of He (appm)/dpa and H(appm)/dpa were 15 nad 15 (or 150) for dual and triple ion beams. The hardness of the irradiated specimens measured at room temperature using a micro indentation after the irradiations. The hardness in these F82H steels irradiated at 450degC to 18 dpa under triple beam irradiation was harder than that under dual beam irradiation. Irradiation softening and hardening under dual beams was observed in F82H ...
Sixty-three subjects, aged 6 months to 16 years, who were enrolled in a prospective, fully blinded, randomized parallel-group phase III clinical trial, received 0.1 mmol/kg doses of either Gd-BOPTA (n=29) or Gd-DTPA (n=34). The MR images were acquired before and within 10 min of contrast agent injection. The primary objective was to compare the difference from pre-dose to post-dose lesion visualization between Gd-BOPTA and Gd-DTPA. Lesion visualization was determined as the sum of individual scores for three criteria of lesion morphological characteristics (lesion border delineation, internal morphology, and contrast enhancement), each assessed qualitatively using 4-point scales. Quantitative evaluation compared changes in lesion-to-background (LBR) and contrast-to-noise (CNR) ratios and per cent enhancement. Monitoring for adverse events and evaluation of vital signs and laboratory values was performed. Pre-dose to post-dose changes in lesion visualization were significantly better ...
Purpose Cisplatin plus gemcitabine is a standard regimen for first-line treatment of advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Phase II studies of pemetrexed plus platinum compounds have also shown activity in this setting. Patients and Methods This noninferiority, phase III, randomized study compared the overall survival between treatment arms using a fixed margin method (hazard ratio [HR] < 1.176) in 1,725 chemotherapy-naive patients with stage IIIB or IV NSCLC and an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0 to 1. Patients received cisplatin 75 mg/m(2) on day 1 and gemcitabine 1,250 mg/m(2) on days 1 and 8 (n = 863) or cisplatin 75 mg/m(2) and pemetrexed 500 mg/m(2) on day 1 (n = 862) every 3 weeks for up to six cycles. Results Overall survival for cisplatin/pemetrexed was noninferior to cisplatin/ gemcitabine (median survival, 10.3 v 10.3 months, respectively; HR = 0.94; 95% CI, 0.84 to 1.05). Overall survival was statistically superior ...

Aqueous solutions of Al/sub 2/(SO/sub 4/)/sub 3/ (1.05 g/100 ml), AlCl/sub 3/ (0.82 g/100 ml) and Ca(OH)/sub 2/ slurry (0.94 g/50 ml) were mixed in various volume ratios and passed through a filter. White cakes left on the filter consisted mainly of ettringite (6CaO.Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/.3SO/sub 3/.32H/sub 2/O). The cakes were then calcined at various temperatures of 300/sup 0/ -- 1000/sup 0/C for 30 and 60 min and pulverized to 80 -- 200 mesh powders. The adsorption capacity of the powders for U(VI) ions dissolved in aqueous solutions was determined by immersing 0.100 g of their powders in 50 ml of the aqueous solution containing 100 ppm of U(VI) ions mainly in the form of (UO/sub 2/(CO/sub 3/)/sub 3/)/sup 4 -/ for 2 hours. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1) Among the powders prepared, those of the oxide compositions, 2.9CaO.Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/.1.4SO/sub 3/ and 2.5CaO.Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/.1.2SO/sub 3/, all fired at 500/sup 0/C or 600/sup 0/C showed high ...
