  4. The ARGUS vertex trigger

    A fast second level trigger has been developed for the ARGUS experiment which recognizes tracks originating from the interaction region. The processor compares the hits in the ARGUS Micro Vertex Drift Chamber to 245760 masks stored in random access memories. The masks which are fully defined in three dimensions are able to reject tracks originating in the wall of the narrow beampipe of 10.5 mm radius. (orig.)

  5. Recent results from ARGUS

    The ARGUS experiment, running at the DORIS II storage ring, has been collecting data on e+e- collisions near 10 GeV region since the end of 1982. The ARGUS detector, designed specifically for large acceptance and high resolution spectroscopy in the UPSILON resonances region, has produced a prolific amount of new results in recent months.   6. DESY: ARGUS bows out

    Last year the ARGUS experiment at DESY's DORIS electron-positron storage ring stopped taking data after ten years of fruitful physics. Analysis and new results will continue for some time, but members of the group are already looking to new physics horizons. The ARGUS collaboration was formed in 1978 by groups from DESY, Dortmund, Heidelberg (IHEP), Lund, Moscow (ITEP), and South Carolina under the leadership of Walter Schmidt-Parzefall. Later groups joined from IPP Canada, Kansas, Ljubljana, Karlsruhe, Erlangen/Nurnberg, Heidelberg (MPI) and Dresden. The detector was conceived to investigate the physics of the beauty and charm quarks and the tau lepton at the upgraded DORIS II electronpositron storage ring. With a similar programme started by the CLEO collaboration at Cornell's CESR electron-positron collider, the resulting competition ensured good physics. ARGUS rolled into the beam in October 1982 and took data until October 1992. In May 1993 the decision was taken to stop further ARGUS running. During those ten years a broad spectrum of physics has been covered, including weak decays of beauty and charm quarks and tau leptons, hadron spectroscopy, quark/gluon mechanisms, photon-photon interactions and particle searches. In particular, ARGUS has made valuable contributions to determination of many fundamental constants of the Standard Model. These comprise measurements of quark transitions (CKM matrix elements) in the decays of B mesons (containing the beauty quark), the determination of the properties of the tau lepton and its neutrino, as well as a measurement of the quark coupling constant. The charm study has resulted in first observations of many charmed hadrons and decay modes. The study of quark and gluon mechanisms (fragmentation) has yielded valuable input for future experiments, while the first observations of new final states in photon-photon interactions have created much interest.   13. Hong Kong domestic health spending: financial years 1989/90 to 2008/09.

    This report presents the latest estimates of Hong Kong domestic health spending for financial years 1989/90 to 2008/09, cross-stratified and categorised by financing source, provider and function. Total expenditure on health (TEH) was HK$84,391 million in financial year 2008/09, which represents an increase of HK$5030 million or 6.3% over the preceding year. Amid the financial tsunami in late 2008, TEH grew faster relative to gross domestic product (GDP) leading to a marked increase as a percentage of GDP from 4.8% in 2007/08 to 5.1% in 2008/09. During the period 1989/90 to 2008/09, TEH per capita (at constant 2009 prices) grew at an average annual rate of 4.9%, which was faster than that of per capita GDP by 2.0 percentage points. 6.4% when compared with 2007/08, reaching HK$41 257 million and HK$43 134 million, respectively. Consequently, public and private shares of total health expenditure remained the same in the 2 years at 48.9% and 51.1%, respectively. Regarding private spending, the most important source of health financing was out-of-pocket payments by households (35.4% of TEH), followed by employer-provided group medical benefits (7.5%) and private insurance (6.4%). During the period, a growing number of households (mostly in middle to high-income groups) subscribed to pre-payment plans for financing health care. As such, private insurance has taken on an increasingly important role for financing private spending. Of the HK$84 391 million total health expenditure in 2008/09, current expenditure comprised HK$81 186 million (96.2%), whereas HK$3206 million (3.8%) was for capital expenses (ie investment in medical facilities). Analysed by health care function, services for curative care accounted for the largest share of total health spending (66.1%), which was made up of ambulatory services (32.8%), in-patient curative care (28.8%), day patient hospital services (3.9%) and home care (0.5%).     Full Text Available This paper analyses bank intermediation in emerging market economies (EMEs at the height of the 2008-09 global financial crisis. The analysis is based on central bank responses to a BIS questionnaire prepared in July 2009, and thus provides a unique snapshot that can be used for studies of commercial banking activity in EMEs before and after the crisis. EME banks by and large adjusted to the crisis in ways that stabilised their financial positions. On the funding side, they reduced reliance on wholesale markets and sought to attract retail deposits. On the lending side, banks slowed new lending, shifted towards less risky loans and increased their holdings of government bonds. In an effort to boost liquidity, banks shortened the maturity of their assets, relied less on the interbank market and increased the scope of their transactions with central banks. Foreign and domestically-owned banks adjusted to the crisis in similar ways.

  16. On the remarkable stratospheric warming in the winter 2008/09

    Complete text of publication follows. It is well known that the interannual variability of the stratospheric winters over the Arctic is very large. Based on data of more than 60 winters this variability has been studied with the aim of understanding and possibly forecasting the type of the coming winter, in the stratosphere and also in the troposphere. Today, there is general agreement that the variability of the stratospheric circulation during the Arctic winters is due to different forcing mechanisms: To the tropospheric planetary waves which penetrate into the stratosphere; to the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) and the Southern Oscillation (SO) in the Tropics which influence the stratospheric polar vortex; and to the 11-year sunspot cycle (SSC) which interacts with the QBO and probably also with the SO. For the winter 2008/09 all of the known signals pointed to a stable, cold stratospheric polar vortex throughout the winter, but in the real atmosphere a Major Midwinter Warming (MMW) developed in January and February with record breaking temperatures. The synoptics of this winter will be discussed in the context of all of the above mentioned forcing mechanisms.

  1. The ARGUS time-of-flight system

    The time-of-flight system of the ARGUS detector at the DORIS e+e- storage ring consists of 64 barrel scintillation counters covering 75% of 4π, and 2x48 end cap counters, covering 17% of 4π. The barrel counters are viewed by two phototubes each, while the end cap counters have one tube only. The time-of-flight system serves as a part of the fast trigger and identifies charged particles. The time resolution achieved during the first year of ARGUS operation is 210 ps for Bhabhas (which are used for the off-line monitoring of the system), and 220 ps for hadrons, both in barrel and end cap counters. This converts into a three standard deviation mass separation up to 700 MeV/c between pions and kaons and 1200 MeV/c between kaons and protons. Electrons can be separated from heavier particles up to 230 MeV/c. (orig.)

    Acute gastroenteritis is a critical infectious disease that affects infants and young children throughout the world, including Japan. This retrospective study was conducted from September 2008 to August 2014 (six seasons: 2008/09-2013/14) to investigate the incidence of enteric viruses responsible for 1,871 cases of acute gastroenteritis in Aichi prefecture, Japan. Of the 1,871 cases, 1,100 enteric viruses were detected in 978 samples, of which strains from norovirus (NoV) genogroup II (60.9%) were the most commonly detected, followed by strains of rotavirus A (RVA) (23.2%), adenovirus (AdV) type 41 (8.2%), sapovirus (SaV) (3.6%), human astrovirus (HAstV) (2.8%), and NoV genogroup I (1.3%). Sequencing of the NoV genogroup II (GII) strains revealed that GII.4 was the most common genotype, although four different GII.4 variants were also identified. The most common G-genotype of RVA was G1 (63.9%), followed by G3 (27.1%), G2 (4.7%) and G9 (4.3%). Three genogroups of SaV strains were found: GI (80.0%), GII (15.0%), and GV (5.0%). HAstV strains were genotyped as HAstV-1 (80.6%), HAstV-8 (16.1%), and HAstV-3 (3.2%). These results show that NoV GII was the leading cause of sporadic acute viral gastroenteritis, although a variety of enteric viruses were detected during the six-season surveillance period.   3. The South to north variation of norovirus epidemics from 2006-07 to 2008-09 in Japan.

    Full Text Available BACKGROUND: Norovirus (NoV is a major cause of gastroenteritis during the autumn and winter seasons in Japan as well as in other temperate climate regions. Most outbreaks are thought to occur by secondary attacks through person-to-person infection by fecal-oral route. Severe cases are found in young children or patients with chronic diseases. Clarifying the patterns of epidemic diffusion is important for considering effective monitoring and surveillance as well as possible prevention. METHODS: We considered the predominant viral genotype from the laboratory result obtained from Infectious Agents Surveillance Report (IASR of National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID. We investigated the increase of NoV cases nationwide for the 2006-07 to 2008-09 seasons using sentinel gastroenteritis data collected from about 3000 pediatric clinics on National Epidemiological Surveillance of Infectious Diseases (NESID acquired from the kriging method in the geographic information system (GIS. RESULTS: During these three seasons, the majority of the detected virus was GII.4, which ranged from 60.4 to 88.9%. The number of cases (per sentinel site at the peak week was 22.81 in the 2006-07 season and it decreased in the following seasons. NoV cases began to increase earlier in the southern areas and gradually extended into the northern areas, similarly, over the seasons. The average period from when the increase of cases was detected in the southern area to when it reached the northern area was 12.7 weeks. CONCLUSION: The decrease of the number of sentinel cases at the peak week may suggest the development of herd immunity after a period of high prevalence. Although the NoV epidemic is thought to be associated with cold weather, its cases first increased in the southern area with relatively warm temperature, indicating there are other climate factors involved.     Full Text Available OBJECTIVE: Enterovirus 71 (EV71 is causing life-threatening outbreaks in tropical Asia. In Taiwan and other tropical Asian countries, although nationwide EV71 epidemics occur cyclically, age-specific incidence rates of EV71 infections that are critical to estimate disease burden and design vaccine trials are not clear. A nationwide EV71 epidemic occurred in 2008-09 in Taiwan, which provided a unique opportunity to estimate age-specific incidence rates of EV71 infections. STUDY DESIGN: We prospectively recruited 749 healthy neonates and conducted follow-ups from June 2006 to December 2009. Sera were obtained from participants at 0, 6, 12, 24, and 36 months of age for measuring EV71 neutralizing antibody titers. If the participants developed suspected enterovirus illnesses, throat swabs were collected for virus isolation. RESULTS: We detected 28 EV71 infections including 20 symptomatic and 8 asymptomatic infections. Age-specific incidence rates of EV71 infection increased from 1.71 per 100 person-years at 0-6 months of age to 4.09, 5.74, and 4.97 per 100 person-years at 7-12, 13-24, and 25-36 months of age, respectively. Cumulative incidence rate was 15.15 per 100 persons by 36 months of age, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Risk of EV71 infections in Taiwan increased after 6 months of age during EV71 epidemics. The cumulative incidence rate was 15% by 36 months of age, and 29% of EV71 infections were asymptomatic in young children.

  5. Recent progress in 3D EM/EM-PIC simulation with ARGUS and parallel ARGUS

    ARGUS is an integrated, 3-D, volumetric simulation model for systems involving electric and magnetic fields and charged particles, including materials embedded in the simulation region. The code offers the capability to carry out time domain and frequency domain electromagnetic simulations of complex physical systems. ARGUS offers a boolean solid model structure input capability that can include essentially arbitrary structures on the computational domain, and a modular architecture that allows multiple physics packages to access the same data structure and to share common code utilities. Physics modules are in place to compute electrostatic and electromagnetic fields, the normal modes of RF structures, and self-consistent particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation in either a time dependent mode or a steady state mode. The PIC modules include multiple particle species, the Lorentz equations of motion, and algorithms for the creation of particles by emission from material surfaces, injection onto the grid, and ionization. In this paper, we present an updated overview of ARGUS, with particular emphasis given in recent algorithmic and computational advances. These include a completely rewritten frequency domain solver which efficiently treats lossy materials and periodic structures, a parallel version of ARGUS with support for both shared memory parallel vector (i.e. CRAY) machines and distributed memory massively parallel MIMD systems, and numerous new applications of the code

  6. Virological Surveillance of Influenza Viruses during the 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 Seasons in Tunisia.

    Full Text Available BACKGROUND: The data contribute to a better understanding of the circulation of influenza viruses especially in North-Africa. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this surveillance was to detect severe influenza cases, identify their epidemiological and virological characteristics and assess their impact on the healthcare system. METHOD: We describe in this report the findings of laboratory-based surveillance of human cases of influenza virus and other respiratory viruses' infection during three seasons in Tunisia. RESULTS: The 2008-09 winter influenza season is underway in Tunisia, with co-circulation of influenza A/H3N2 (56.25%, influenza A(H1N1 (32.5%, and a few sporadic influenza B viruses (11.25%. In 2010-11 season the circulating strains are predominantly the 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1pdm09 (70% and influenza B viruses (22%. And sporadic viruses were sub-typed as A/H3N2 and unsubtyped influenza A, 5% and 3%, respectively. Unlike other countries, highest prevalence of influenza B virus Yamagata-like lineage has been reported in Tunisia (76% localised into the clade B/Bangladesh/3333/2007. In the pandemic year, influenza A(H1N1pdm09 predominated over other influenza viruses (95%. Amino acid changes D222G and D222E were detected in the HA gene of A(H1N1pdm09 virus in two severe cases, one fatal case and one mild case out of 50 influenza A(H1N1pdm09 viruses studied. The most frequently reported respiratory virus other than influenza in three seasons was RSV (45.29%. CONCLUSION: This article summarises the surveillance and epidemiology of influenza viruses and other respiratory viruses, showing how rapid improvements in influenza surveillance were feasible by connecting the existing structure in the health care system for patient records to electronic surveillance system for reporting ILI cases.

  8. ArgusE: Design and Development of a Micro-Spectrometer used for Remote Earth and Atmospheric Observations

    In this paper we will discuss the design and development of the ArgusE. The ArgusE is a micro-spectrometer which has been developed for Earth and atmospheric monitoring purposes. The project is primarily focused on using the ArgusE micro-spectrometer in order to ascertain whether it is possible to obtain surface soil moisture content measurements from space using its short-wave infrared detector. The secondary objective of the project is to quantify greenhouse gases that could be studied within new spectral range. The ArgusE is built on Argus 1000 micro-spectrometer design and spaceflight heritage. Currently, on the CanX-2 mission launched in 2008, the Argus 1000 micro-spectrometer observes the infrared solar radiation reflected by Earth surface targets as small as 1.5 km2 and the atmosphere (aerosols, clouds, and constituents). Over the past five years that Argus 1000 has been in operation, we have accumulated more than 200 observations from a series of land and ocean targets. It was followed by the SRMSAT, launched in 2011 (India). Currently all space-based Argus 1000s are collecting Earth and atmospheric observation data within the 0.9-1.7 micrometers spectral range, with special focus on CO2 and other greenhouse gases, and cloud and coastline detection. GENSPECT, a line-by-line radiative Matlab-based toolbox is used to calculate gas absorption and emissivity for a custom grouping of atmospheric gases. Given gas types and amounts, temperature, pressure, path length and frequency range for an atmosphere or laboratory cell, GENSPECT computes the spectral characteristics of the gas mixture. The resulting models used to discover the potential monitoring of atmospheric greenhouse gases and topical soil moisture content will be discussed and displayed graphically. In addition, this paper will showcase the chassis redesign and change of electronics which allow the ArgusE to now showcase the spectral region of 1.7 to 2.2 micrometers.     A variety of recent results are reported from the ARGUS experiment, operating in the e+e- storage ring DORIS II at DESY. A new upper limit of 35 MeV/c2 on the mass of the tau neutrino has been extracted from a study of the hadronic mass spectrum in five-prong tau decays. In the field of b-physics a number of important discoveries have been made, including observation of large mixing in the B0-bar B0 system and evidence for a finite b to u coupling through observation of charmless B decays.     Full Text Available The article analyses Spain’s voluntary return policies, including the programme instituted specifically to assist migrants affected by the 2008/09 crisis. Voluntary return policies were implemented in Europe in the context of the 1973/4 crisis. Just like the Western European programmes of the 1970s and the 1980s, the current Spanish voluntary return policies also only elicited the cooperation of small numbers of migrants and countries of origin. The article recommends four broader policy measures to tackle the emerging trend whereby a considerable proportion of migrants will stay in Spain rather than repatriate.

    The High Plains aquifer underlies 111.8 million acres (175,000 square miles) in parts of eight States - Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming. Water-level declines began in parts of the High Plains aquifer soon after the beginning of substantial irrigation with groundwater in the aquifer area. This report presents water-level changes in the High Plains aquifer from the time before substantial groundwater irrigation development had occurred (about 1950 and termed "predevelopment" in this report) to 2009, from 2007-08, and from 2008-09. The report also presents change in water in storage in the aquifer, from predevelopment to 2009. Ninety-nine percent of the water-level changes from predevelopment to 2009 ranged from a rise of 41 feet to a decline of 178 feet. The area-weighted, average water-level changes in the aquifer were a decline of 14.0 feet from predevelopment to 2009, a decline of 0.1 foot from 2007-08, and a decline of 0.3 foot from 2008-09. Total water in storage in the aquifer in 2009 was about 2.9 billion acre-feet, which was a decline of about 274 million acre-feet since predevelopment.

  15. Dissemination and support of ARGUS for accelerator applications

    The ARGUS code is a three-dimensional code system for simulating for interactions between charged particles, electric and magnetic fields, and complex structure. It is a system of modules that share common utilities for grid and structure input, data handling, memory management, diagnostics, and other specialized functions. The code includes the fields due to the space charge and current density of the particles to achieve a self-consistent treatment of the particle dynamics. The physic modules in ARGUS include three-dimensional field solvers for electrostatics and electromagnetics, a three-dimensional electromagnetic frequency-domain module, a full particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation module, and a steady-state PIC model. These are described in the Appendix to this report. This project has a primary mission of developing the capabilities of ARGUS in accelerator modeling of release to the accelerator design community. Five major activities are being pursued in parallel during the first year of the project. To improve the code and/or add new modules that provide capabilities needed for accelerator design.     This study reports effectiveness of trivalent influenza vaccine (TIV) against confirmed pandemic influenza infection in England using a retrospective test-negative case-control study. Cases and controls were frequency matched by age, swabbing-week and region. On univariable and multivariable analysis adjusted for underlying clinical risk factors, cases were no more or less likely than controls to be vaccinated with 2008-09 or 2007-08 season TIV. Adjusted vaccine effectiveness for the former was -6% (-43% to 22%). Vaccine effectiveness did not differ significantly by age-group or hospitalisation status. There was no evidence prior vaccination with TIV significantly altered subsequent risk of pandemic influenza H1N1 2009 infection. PMID:21292008

  17. ARGUS results on beauty and charm

    Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e- storage ring DORIS II at DESY new results on beauty and charm physics have been obtained. With more data an update on B0B-bar0 mixing is given for the mixing parameter r = (21±6) %. The investigation of the decay B-bar0 → D*+l-ν allows a determination of the Kobayashi-Maskawa element |Vcb| = 0.052±0.011. The lifetime ratio of charged and neutral B mesons is measured to be τB+/τB0 = 1.00±0.23±0.14. In semileptonic B decays, as well as in exclusive B decays, no significant signals are found for b→u or b→s transitions. In charm physics, the spin of the D*(2459) is shown to be J=2. The enhancement, previously known as the D*(2420), seen in the final state D*(2010)+π-, is resolved into two relatively narrow resonances separated in mass by approximately 40 MeV/c2. The results of a decay angular analysis are in good agreement with the interpretation of the two states as L=1 D mesons of spin-parities 1+ and 2+. The charged isospin partner of the D*(2459)0 is observed at a mass of (2469±4±6) MeV/c2, decaying to D0π+. The isospin mass splitting is measured to be (14±5±8) MeV/c2. Finally, the first excited P-wave Ds meson has been observed in the decay D*s(2536) → D*+Ks0. (author)

    The effort has two broad goals, which have been prioritized by DOE, as follows: to enhance the ARGUS code for use in practical accelerator design simulations; to release ARGUS to the accelerator community through the Los Alamos Accelerator Code Group (LAACG). During the contract period, ARGUS versions 24 and 25 have been released. An upgraded version 25 (ARGUS v.25c) will be released in July, 1995, and will include all of the features that are tested and working at the conclusion of the DOE-funded effort. The effort that consolidated version 24 established a set of core capabilities that all ARGUS modules could access. Version 25 incorporated several major improvements: (1) a new frequency-domain module was incorporated into ARGUS that can handle degenerate modes, lossy materials, and periodic boundary conditions with sub-phase specification, and that can utilize the ARGUS data handling machinery for multiblock operation; (2) HDF output was implemented to allow ARGUS to send data to visualization tools; (3) a plasma chemistry capability was included in the steady-state PIC module to allow ionization, stripping, electron attachment, charge exchange, and other ion rate processes to occur within the PIC calculation; (4) new structure input options for figures of translation (extrusion) and figures of revolution were implemented. This ARGUS release is supported on all Cray platforms and on the IBM RS6000 Unix workstation platform. Version 25 was released in February 1994. This study aimed to determine the visual incidence of fungal-damaged kernels (FDKs, the incidence of two main Gibberella (a teleomorph of Fusarium complexes (G. fujikuroi and G. zeae associated with maize using a seed health blotter test, and the fumonisin levels, using high performance liquid chromatography, in samples of maize grains grown across 23 municipalities during the 2008/09 and 2009/10 growing seasons. Additionally, 104 strains that were representative of all of the analysed samples were identified to species using PCR assays. The mean FDK was seven per cent, and only six of the samples had levels greater than six per cent. Fusarium spp. of the G. fujikuroi complex were present in 96% of the samples, and G. zeae was present in 18% of the samples (5/27. The mean incidence of G. fujikuroi was 58%, and the incidence of G. zeae varied from 2 to 6%. FB1 was found in 58.6%, FB2 in 37.9%, and both toxins in 37.9% of the samples. The FB1 and FB2 levels were below the quantification limits for 41.3% of the samples, and the mean FB1 levels (0.66 µg/g were higher than the mean FB2 levels (0.42 µg/g. The PCR identification separated the 104 isolates into three of the G. fujikuroi complex: F. verticillioides (76%, F. subglutinans (4% and F. proliferatum (2%; and G. zeae (anamorph = F. graminearum (18%. Our results confirmed the dominance of F. verticillioides, similar to other regions of Brazil, but they differed due to the relatively higher incidence of F. graminearum.   6. Argus versus manual methods to measure liver volume of living liver transplant donors

    Objective: To investigate the feasibility of measuring liver volume with Argus method. Methods: Thirty-two healthy liver transplant donor candidates underwent liver MRI on a 3.0 T MR unit. Volume interpolated body examination (VIBE) was performed after the administration of gadobenate dimeglumine. The VIBE data was transferred to the diagnostic workstation, and then multiple planar reconstruction (MPR) images were acquired. Firstly, two observers manually drawn the liver shape and calculated three volumes: the whole liver volume and right lobes volumes include middle hepatic vein (MHV) and exclude MHV, respectively. Secondly, the same data was transferred to Argus software, calculated that three volumes. Each measurement time was recorded. Actual graft volume (the right lobe)was measured during surgery. The correlation between right lobes volume of two measurements and actual graft volume was analyzed. The time needed for Argus and that needed for manual method were compared with paired t test. Results: The right lobe volumes measured by Argus, manually and surgery method were (813±187), (807±181) and (713±137) mm3, respectively. Argus method and manual method showed good correlation with surgery method, and the correlation coefficients were 0.897 (Argus method) and 0.884(manual method), respectively. The time for manual method and Argus method were(44.3±2.7) and (12.2±1.0)min, respectively. There was significant difference between Argus and manual methods (t=76.39, P<0.05). Conclusion: Compared with manual method, use of the Liver volumetric measurement by Argus software not only correlated well with Actual graft volume, but also saves time. Argus has potential clinical value for volumetric measurement in living liver transplant donors. (authors)

    The Argus(®) II Retinal Prosthesis System (Second Sight Medical Products) is the first prosthetic vision device to obtain regulatory approval in both Europe and the USA. As such it has entered the commercial market as a treatment for patients with profound vision loss from end-stage outer retinal disease, predominantly retinitis pigmentosa. To date, over 100 devices have been implanted worldwide, representing the largest group of patients currently treated with visual prostheses. The system works by direct stimulation of the relatively preserved inner retina via epiretinal microelectrodes, thereby replacing the function of the degenerated photoreceptors. Visual information from a glasses-mounted video camera is converted to a pixelated image by an external processor, before being transmitted to the microelectrode array at the macula. Elicited retinal responses are then relayed via the normal optic nerve to the cortex for interpretation. We reviewed the animal and human studies that led to the development of the Argus(®) II device. A sufficiently robust safety profile was demonstrated in the phase I/II clinical trial of 30 patients. Improvement of function in terms of orientation and mobility, target localisation, shape and object recognition, and reading of letters and short unrehearsed words have also been shown. There remains a wide variability in the functional outcomes amongst the patients and the factors contributing to these performance differences are still unclear. Future developments in terms of both software and hardware aimed at improving visual function have been proposed. Further experience in clinical outcomes is being acquired due to increasing implantation. PMID:26404104

    Full Text Available Lobster fishery (Panulirus argus forms an important part of the fishing activities along the Caribbean coast of Central America. The present study provides information regarding the seasonal abundance and distribution of postlarval P. argus in Parque Nacional Cahuita, Costa Rica. During the study period (March 2004-February 2005, a total of 1907 pueruli were obtained from GuSi collectors. Postlarvae were present during all months, with a pronounced peak in January-February 2005 (CPUE of 21.82 and 22.18, pueruli/collector/month, respectively, and minor peaks in May and October 2004. The abundance of postlarval P. argus in the study area was comparable to locations which support important lobster fisheries, e.g. Mexico. A majority of the postlarvae (1027 ind. was collected during the first quarter moon, the remaining pueruli (880 ind. during new moon; these results are in general agreement with similar findings for P. argus in the Caribbean area. Based upon our results, we recommend introducing a local or regional monitoring program, studying spiny lobster migration and distribution patterns, and evaluate the introduction of artificial shelters for P. argus.Las capturas de langosta (Panulirus argus son de gran importancia en la actividad pesquera a lo largo de las costas del Caribe de Centroamérica.     Automated monitoring and tracking of materials with radio frequency identification (RFID) technology can significantly improve both the operating efficiency of radiological facilities and the application of the ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle in them. One such system, called ARG-US, has been developed by Argonne National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Packaging and Certification Program to use in managing sensitive nuclear and radioactive materials. Several ARG-US systems are in various stages of deployment and advanced testing across DOE sites. ARG-US utilizes sensors in the tags to continuously monitor the state of health of the packaging and promptly disseminates alarms to authorized users. In conjunction with global positioning system (GPS) tracking provided by TRANSCOM, the system can also monitor and track packages during transport. A compact dosimeter has been incorporated in the ARG-US tags via an onboard universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter interface. The detector has a wide measurement range for gamma radiation - from 0.1 mSv/h to 8 Sv/h. The detector is able to generate alarms for both high and low radiation and for a high cumulative dose. In a large installation, strategically located dosimeter-enabled tags can yield an accurate, real-time, 2D or 3D dose field map that can be used to enhance facility safety, security, and safeguards. This implementation can also lead to a reduced need for manned surveillance and reduced exposure of personnel to radiation, consistent with the ALARA principle at workplaces. (authors)

    Full Text Available At Dome Argus, East Antarctica, the surface mass balance (SMB from 2008 to 2013 was evaluated using 49 stakes installed across a 30×30 km area. Spatial analysis showed that at least 12 and 20 stakes are needed to obtain reliable estimates of SMB at local scales (a few hundred square metres and regional scales (tens of square kilometres, respectively. The estimated annual mean SMB was 22.9±5.9 kg m−2 yr−1, including a net loss by sublimation of −2.22±0.02 kg m−2 yr−1 and a mass gain by deposition of 1.37±0.01 kg m−2 yr−1. Therefore, ca. 14.3% of precipitation was modified after deposition, which should be considered when interpreting snow or ice core records produced by future drilling projects. The surface snow density and SMB in the western portion of Dome Argus are higher than in other areas, and these differences are likely related to the katabatic wind, which is strengthened by topography in this sector. A new digital elevation model (DEM of Dome Argus was generated, confirming that both peaks of the dome can be considered as the summit of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. Findings from this study should be valuable for validating SMB estimates obtained from regional climate models and DEMs established using remote-sensing data.

  19. THE TUCANA/HOROLOGIUM, COLUMBA, AB DORADUS, AND ARGUS ASSOCIATIONS: NEW MEMBERS AND DUSTY DEBRIS DISKS

    We propose 35 star systems within ∼70 pc of Earth as newly identified members of nearby young stellar kinematic groups; these identifications include the first A- and late-B-type members of the AB Doradus moving group and field Argus Association. All but one of the 35 systems contain a bright solar- or earlier-type star that should make an excellent target for the next generation of adaptive optics (AO) imaging systems on large telescopes. AO imaging has revealed four massive planets in orbit around the λ Boo star HR 8799. Initially, the planets were of uncertain mass due in large part to the uncertain age of the star. We find that HR 8799 is a likely member of the ∼30 Myr old Columba Association, implying planet masses ∼6 times that of Jupiter. We consider Spitzer Space Telescope MIPS photometry of stars in the ∼30 Myr old Tucana/Horologium and Columba Associations, the ∼40 Myr old field Argus Association, and the ∼70 Myr old AB Doradus moving group. The percentage of stars in these young stellar groups that display excess emission above the stellar photosphere at 24 and 70 μm wavelengths-indicative of the presence of a dusty debris disk-is compared with corresponding percentages for members of 11 open clusters and stellar associations with ages between 8 and 750 Myr, thus elucidating the decay of debris disks with time.

    From 2001 to 2002,a new and emergent infectious disease of Ophiocephalus argus occurred in a fishery in Hubei Province,China,with an incidence of 60%~70% and a mortality as high as 100%.The diseased fish showed an enlarged abdomen,the millet-like nodules in internal organs,and the swollen kidney which was composed of 5~10 sarcoma-like bodies in cream or gray-white colour or ulcerated into beandregs-like substance.Light microscopic observation revealed the basophilic or acidphilic inclusions in cytoplasm of the cells and the granulomas,a diffusive chronic inflammation in internal organs.Further analysis under an electron microscope indicated that the intracytoplasmic inclusions were rickettsia-like organisms (RLOs) that are either spherical or coccoid,with variable size,ranging from 0.5~1.5 μm in diameter,and enclosed within membrane-bound cytoplasmic vacuoles.RLO had a central nucleoid region with some fine filamentous structures and an electron-dense granule.Its cytoplasm contained abundant ribosomal bodies.Occasionally,RLO appeared to be divided by binary fission.RLOs were also observed in the homogenized tissue of infected fish.The results suggested that the death of cultured O.Argus was caused by RLO infection.

    Finding, tracking and monitoring events and activities of interest on a continuous basis remains one of our highest Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) requirements. Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) serve as one of the warfighter's primary and most responsive means for surveillance and gathering intelligence information and are becoming vital assets in military operations. This is demonstrated by their significant use in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom and in Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Lessons learned from these operations indicate that UAVs provide critical capabilities for enhancing situational awareness, intelligence gathering and force protection for our military forces. Current UAS high resolution electro-optics offers a small high resolution field of view (FOV). This narrow FOV is a limiting factor on the utility of the EO system. The UAS that are available offer persistence; however, the effectiveness of the EO system is limited by the sensors and available processing. DARPA is addressing this developing the next generation of persistent, very wide area surveillance with the Autonomous Real-time Ground Ubiquitous Surveillance - Imaging System (ARGUS-IS). The system will be capable of imaging an area of greater than 40 square kilometers with a Ground Space Distance (GSD) of 15 cm at video rates of greater than 12 Hz. This paper will discuss the elements of the ARGUS-IS program.

  2. Demographic patterns in the peacock grouper (Cephalopholis argus), an introduced Hawaiian reef fish

    This study took advantage of a unique opportunity to collect large sample sizes of a coral reef fish species across a range of physical and biological features of the Hawaiian Archipelago to investigate variability in the demography of an invasive predatory coral reef fish, Cephalopholis argus (Family: Epinephelidae). Age-based demographic analyses were conducted at 10 locations in the main Hawaiian Islands and estimates of weight-at-length, size-at-age, and longevity were compared among locations. Each metric differed among locations, although patterns were not consistent across metrics. Length-weight relationships for C. argus differed among locations and individuals weighed less at a given length at Hilo, the southernmost location studied. Longevity differed among and within islands and was greater at locations on Maui and Hawaii compared to the more northern locations on Oahu and Kauai. Within-island growth patterns differed at Kauai, Oahu, and Hawaii. This work provides a case study of fundamental life history information from distant and/or spatially limited locations that are critical for developing robust fishery models. The differences observed both among and within islands indicate that variability may be driven by cross-scale mechanisms that need to be considered in fisheries stock assessments and ecosystem-based management.

  3. π+π-γ and K+K- production in two photon collisions at ARGUS

    The production of the final states K+K- and η'→π+π-γ in γγ collisions has been measured using the ARGUS detector. The product Γγγ(η')Br(η'→ργ) has been determined. The topological cross section for the production of charged kaon pairs in two-photon collisions has been measured and the γγ-widths and interference parameters for the tensor mesons f2(1270), a2(1320) and f2'(1525) have been extracted. The helicity structure assumed for the K+K- continuum contribution has a significant effect on the result. Upper limits have been obtained for the γγ-widths of the glueball candidate states f2(1720) and X(2230). (orig.)

    The ARGUS detector is now taking data at the e+e- storage ring DORIS II. We report: the mass of the UPSILON' = 10023.1 +- 0.4 +- 0.5 MeV, the fragmentation data for D*/sup +-/ mesons fits Petersen's description with epsilon = 0.11, a new decay mode for F/sup +-/ → phi π/sup +-/π+π-, the mass of the F/sup +-/ = 1971 +- 4 +- 2 MeV, the branching ratio UPSILON' → π+π-UPSILON = 17.9 +- 0.9 +- 2.1%, the invariant mass distribution of the π+π- system agrees with predictions based on QCD, and the gamma energies in the transitions UPSILON' → γ3P/sub i/ agree with results reported by CUSB, CLEO and Crystall Ball. 17 references

    The present study was conducted to investigate the food consumption pattern and gastric emptying time using x-radiography technique in scats fish, Scatophagus argus feeding to satiation in laboratory conditions. Prior to feeding experiment, fish of various sizes were examined their stomach volume, using freshly prepared stomachs ligatured at the tips of the burret, where the maximum amount of distilled water collected in the stomach were measured (ml). Stomach volume is correlated with maximum food intake (S{sub max}) and it can estimate the maximum stomach distension by allometric model i.e volume=0.0000089W{sup 2.93}. Gastric emptying time was estimated using a qualitative X-radiography technique, where the fish of various sizes were fed to satiation at different time since feeding. All the experimental fish was feed into satiation using radio-opaque barium sulphate (BaSO{sub 4}) paste injected in the wet shrimp in proportion to the body weight. The BaSO{sub 4} was found suitable to track the movement of feed/prey in the stomach over time and gastric emptying time of scats fish can be estimated. The results of qualitative X-Radiography observation of gastric motility, showed the fish (200 gm) that fed to maximum satiation meal (circa 11 gm) completely emptied their stomach within 30 - 36 hrs. The results of the present study will provide the first baseline information on the stomach volume, gastric emptying of scats fish in captivity.

  8. ωω and ρ+ρ- production in two photon interactions at ARGUS

    The reactions γγ→2π+2π-2π0 and γγ→π+π-π0π0 have been studied by using the ARGUS detector at the e+e- storage ring DORIS II at DESY. In the 2π+2π-2π0 final state the production of ω-mesons is observed and in particular the reaction γγ→ωω is seen for the first time. The cross section for γγ→ωω is found to have an enhancement at ≅ 1.9 GeV/c2 of about 12 nb. The topological cross sections for the reactions γγ→2π+2π-2π0 and γγ→ωπ+π-π0 are also measured. The production of charged ρ-mesons is observed in the π+π-π0π0 final state. The cross section for the reaction γγ→ρ+ρ- is measured for the first time. The cross section did not show a threshold enhancement similar to that found in the reaction γγ→ρ0ρ0 and is about a factor of four smaller. A spin parity analysis of the ρ+ρ- system shows that the cross section is dominated by the two amplitudes JP=0+ and JP=2+ with helicity 2. (orig.)

    Spectra of electrons produced in semileptonic B-meson decay into a multihadron final state, calculated recently, are used in combination with the Bauer, Stech and Wirbel results, to fit the new ARGUS data. A value of {lambda}=vertical strokeV{sub ub}/V{sub cb}vertical stroke=0.13+-0.01 which gives the best fit of them is used together with data on B{sup 0}-anti B{sup 0} and K{sub 1}{sup 0}-K{sub 2}{sup 0} transitions, to determine the t quark mass. The result is m{sub t}=130+-40 GeV, {delta}'=180deg-{delta}=(23+-14)deg, vertical strokeV{sub td}/V{sub cb}vertical stroke=0.34+-0.01, where the main part of the errors are due to the uncertainty in f'{sub B}=B{sup 1/2}f{sub B} and in B{sub K}.   12. Host introduction and parasites: a case study on the parasite community of the peacock grouper Cephalopholis argus (Serranidae) in the Hawaiian Islands.

    The peacock grouper (Cephalopholis argus) was intentionally introduced to the Hawaiian coastal waters 50 years ago to enhance the local fisheries. Following introduction, this species spread rapidly and became extremely abundant. A comparison of the metazoan parasite community of C. argus was performed between its native range (Moorea Island, French Polynesia) and its introduced range (Oahu and Big Island, Hawaii). Polynesian groupers were infected with a highly diversified parasite community whereas Hawaiian groupers exhibited a depauperate ensemble of parasite species, C. argus having lost most of the parasites common in their native range. Interestingly, the grouper has not acquired new parasites present in Hawaiian waters. This study provides the first field evidence of significant parasite release in a wild but previously introduced fish in coral reefs and is discussed in relation to the Enemy-Release Hypothesis which has never been assessed in those ecosystems. The Nuclear Platform R and D Program is part of the Research and Technology Operation (RTO) unit of AECL and is managed through the Research and Development division, which has responsibility for maintaining and enhancing the knowledge and technology base. The RTO is also responsible for managing AECL's nuclear facilities and infrastructure (including laboratories and R and D facilities), the nuclear waste management program and other legacy liabilities (e.g., decommissioning) to demonstrate and grow shareholder value.     Melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) plays an important role in the regulation of food intake and energy expenditure in mammals. The functions of the MC4R in fish have not been investigated extensively. We herein reported on the cloning, tissue distribution, and pharmacological characterization of spotted scat (Scatophagus argus) MC4R (SAMC4R). It consisted of a 984bp open reading frame predicted to encode a protein of 327 amino acids. Sequence analysis revealed that SAMC4R was highly homologous (>80%) at amino acid levels to several teleost MC4Rs. Phylogenetic analyses showed that SAMC4R was closely related to piscine MC4R. Using RT-PCR, we showed that in addition to brain, pituitary, and gonads, mc4r mRNA was also widely expressed in peripheral tissues of spotted scat in sexually divergent pattern. With human MC4R (hMC4R) as a control, several agonists including α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH), [Nle(4), D-Phe(7)]-α-MSH (NDP-MSH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and THIQ (N-[(3R)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolinium3-ylcarbonyl]-(1R)-1-(4-chlorobenzyl)-2-[4-cyclohexyl-4-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-ylmethyl)piperidin-1-yl]-2-oxoethylamine), were used to investigate the binding and signaling properties of SAMC4R. The results showed that SAMC4R bound NDP-MSH with the highest affinity followed by ACTH (1-24) and α-MSH. Similar ranking was also found for hMC4R, although SAMC4R had two to five-fold higher affinities for these ligands. THIQ did not displace NDP-MSH from SAMC4R, different from hMC4R. α-MSH, NDP-MSH, and ACTH (1-24) were identified as potent agonists to stimulate cAMP generation followed by THIQ in SAMC4R. The availability of SAMC4R and its pharmacological characteristics will facilitate the investigation of its function in regulating diverse physiological processes in spotted scat. PMID:27080551

    Cymatocarpus solearis, a brachycoeliid trematode that parasitizes sea turtles, uses spiny lobsters Panulirus argus as second intermediate hosts. We examined variability in infection by C. solearis in Bahía de la Ascensión, Mexico, a tropical bay with a highly productive fishery for P. argus that is based on the extensive use of casitas (large artificial shelters), which can harbor multiple juveniles and adults of this gregarious lobster species. We sampled 3956 lobsters from 466 casitas distributed over three bay zones within two closed seasons and one fishing season. In these lobsters (9.5-115.2mm carapace length, CL), the average infection prevalence was 11.7% but the probability of infection increased significantly with size. Prevalence varied with season but was consistently higher in one zone than in the other two zones. Infection with C. solearis was negatively related with clinical infection with Panulirus argus Virus 1 (PaV1). We also sampled 405 lobsters from the commercial catch obtained throughout the bay at the onset of the fishing season. In these relatively larger lobsters (70.3-168.0mm CL), average prevalence of C. solearis was higher (23.5%) but was not affected by lobster size or sex. Encysted metacercariae occurred in both abdominal and cephalothoracic muscles. The effects of C. solearis on phenotypic traits of P. argus that may potentially impact the host population dynamics and fisheries remain to be investigated. PMID:27216231

    The Aura Validation Experiment (AVE) focuses on validating Aura satellite measurements of important atmospheric trace gases using ground-based, aircraft, and balloon-borne instruments. Global satellite observations of CO from the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) on the EOS Aura satellite have been ongoing since September 2004. This paper discusses CO validation experiments during the Oct-AVE (2004 Houston, Texas) and CR-AVE (2006 San Jose, Costa Rica) campaigns. The coincidences in location and time between the satellite observations and the available in situ profiles for some cases are not ideal. However, the CO distribution patterns in the two validation flight areas are shown to have very little variability in the aircraft and satellite . observations, thereby making them suitable for validation comparisons. TES CO profiles, which typically have a retrieval uncertainty of 10-20%, are compared with in situ CO measurements from NASA Ames Research Center's Argus instrument taken on board the WB-57F aircraft during Oct-AVE. TES CO retrievals during CR-AVE are compared with in situ measurements from Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Aircraft Laser Infrared Absorption Spectrometer (ALIAS) instrument as well as with the Argus instrument, both taken on board the WB-57F aircraft. During CR-AVE, the average overall difference between ALIAS and Argus CO was 4%, with the ALIAS measurement higher. During individual flights, 2-min time-averaged differences between the two in situ instruments had standard deviation of 14%. The TES averaging kernels and a priori constraint profiles for CO are applied to the in situ data for proper comparisons to account for the reduced vertical resolution and the influence of the a priori in the satellite-derived profile.     Full Text Available Tagging experiments have been used to study the migratory behaviour of the spiny lobster Panulirus argus (Latreille, off Ceará State, Brazil. An analysis based on vectorial theory has provided the calculation of the coefficient of directional dispersion ( V, the coefficient of randon disperson (a² and the centre of density, by quarters of the year. The lobsters were found to engage in breeding migration in the second quarter, when there is a low random dispersion and in feeding migration in the third and fourth quarters, when there is high randon dispersion. The spawning areas are located in offshore regions and the lobsters reach them by moving seawardly, from positions occupied nearer the cost, in the fourth quarter.

    Estimation of t-quark mass, mt=(130±30) GeV or, more accurate, mt=(125±15) GeV, obtained recently using ARGUS and CLEO data on semileptonic B-decays, are used, in connection with LEP, CDF and UA2 data, for the prediction of the Higgs scalar mass: 40 GeV H H is found to be maximal inside this region at small value of M(H-tilde) 60 -120 GeV.   2. Development and performance evaluation of an animal SPECT system using Philips ARGUS gamma camera and pinhole collimators

    We developed an animal SPECT system using clinical Philips ARGUS scintillation camera, pinhole collimator with specially manufactured small apertures and laser alignment system to minimize center of rotation error. In this study, we evaluated the physical characteristics of this system and biological feasibility for animal experiments. Rotating station for small animals using a step motor and laser alignment system were developed. Pinhole inserts with small apertures (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mm) were manufactured and physical parameters including planar and reconstructed spatial resolution and sensitivity were measured for some apertures. Using manufactured multiple line sources; the size of usable field of view was measured. Using a Tc-99m line source with 0.5 mm diameter placed in the exact center of field of view, planar spatial resolution according to the distance was measured. Calibration factor to obtain FWHM values in mm unit was calculated from the planar image of two separated line sources. Tc-99m point source with 1 mm diameter was used for the measurement of system sensitivity. In addition, SPECT data of micro phantom with cold inserts and rat brain after intravenous injection of [I-123]FP-CIT were acquired using laser alignment system and reconstructed using filtered back projection and ordered subsets expectation maximization reconstruction algorithm. Size of usable field of view was proportional to the distance and that could be fitted into a linear equation.(y=1.4x+0.5 x:distance) System sensitivity and planar spatial resolution at 3 cm measured using 1.0 mm aperture was 71 cps/MBq and 1.24 mm, respectively. In the SPECT image of rat brain the distribution of dopamine transporter in the striatum was well identified in each hemisphere. We verified that this new animal SPECT system with the Philips ARGUS scanner and small apertures had sufficient performance for small animal imaging

  3. Adaptive responses to osmotic stress in kidney-derived cell lines from Scatophagus argus, a euryhaline fish.

    The euryhaline fish, the spotted scat (Scatophagus argus), is exceptional for its ability to tolerate rapid fluctuations in salinity. To better understand fish osmoregulation and enable more precise analyses of specific features of adaptive responses to the osmotic stress in fish, a S. argus kidney-derived cell line (SK) was developed and subcultured for more than 70 passages. The cells were mostly fibroblast-like, with a normal diploid karyotype (2n=48). A low-osmolarity-adapted SK cell line (SK-la) was induced by growth in a hypotonic solution (150 mOsm). Effects of different osmotic stresses (150, 300 and 450 mOsm) on cell growth, cell morphology, cell volume changes and cell damage in SK, SK-la and CIK (a kidney-derived cell line from freshwater grass carp) cells were studied. These were compared by use of microscopic observation, flow cytometry and a Na-K-ATPase (NKA) assay. SK cells became smaller and grew rapidly in response to hypotonic stress (150 mOsm), and exhibited no visible morphological changes in response to hypertonic stress (450 mOsm). SK-la grew well by moderate hypertonicity (300 mOsm) but depressed in severe hypertonicity (450 mOsm), the number of unhealthy SK-la cells rose as osmolarity increased. In contrast, CIK cells became unhealthy with anisotonic challenge. The NKA activities of SK and CIK cells were assayed after exposure to anisotonic conditions, and rapid decreases were detected immediately except SK cells which were not affected in hypotonicity. Unlike in SK and CIK, an increase following a down-regulation of NKA activity was observed in SK-la cells upon moderate hypertonic stress. These results suggested that SK and SK-la cells had stronger osmoregulatory capacity than CIK cells, and provided new insights on the osmosensing and osmotic adaption in euryhaline fish kidney.     Both the spotted scat Scatophagus argus and rabbitfish Siganus canaliculatus belong to the few cultured herbivorous marine teleost, however, their fatty acyl desaturase (Fad) system involved in long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC-PUFA) biosynthesis is different. The S. argus has a △6 Fad, while the rabbitfish has △4 and △6/△5 Fads, which were the first report in vertebrate and marine teleost, respectively. In order to compare the characteristics of elongases of very long-chain fatty acids (Elovl) between them, two Elovl cDNAs were cloned from S. argus in the present study. One has 885bp of open read fragment (ORF) encoding a protein with 294 amino acid (aa) showing Elovl5 activity functionally characterized by heterologous expression in yeast, which was primarily active for the elongation of C18 and C20 PUFAs. The other has 915bp of ORF coding for a 305 aa protein showing Elovl4 activity, which was more efficient in the elongation of C20 and C22 PUFAs. Tissue distribution analyses by RT-PCR showed that elovl5 was highly expressed in the liver compared to other tissues determined, whereas elovl4 transcripts were only detected in the eye. The expression of elovl5 and elovl4 were significantly affected by dietary fatty acid composition, with highest expression of mRNA in the liver and eye of fish fed a diet with an 18:3n-3/18:2n-6 ratio of 1.7:1. These results indicated that the S. argus has a similar Elovl system in the LC-PUFA biosynthetic pathway to that of rabbitfish although their Fad system was different, suggesting that the diversification of fish LC-PUFA biosynthesis specificities is more associated with its Fad system.     The Packaging Certification Program (PCP) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Environmental Management (EM), Office of Packaging and Transportation (EM-14), has developed a radio frequency identification (RFID) tracking and monitoring system for the management of nuclear materials during storage and transportation. The system, developed by the PCP team at Argonne National Laboratory, consists of hardware (Mk-series sensor tags, fixed and handheld readers, form factor for multiple drum types, seal integrity sensors, and enhanced battery management), software (application programming interface, ARG-US software for local and remote/web applications, secure server and database management), and cellular/satellite communication interfaces for vehicle tracking and item monitoring during transport. The ability of the above system to provide accurate, real-time tracking and monitoring of the status of multiple, certified containers of nuclear materials has been successfully demonstrated in a week-long, 1,700-mile DEMO performed in April 2008. While the feedback from the approximately fifty (50) stakeholders who participated in and/or observed the DEMO progression were very positive and encouraging, two major areas of further improvements - system integration and web application enhancement - were identified in the post-DEMO evaluation. The principal purpose of the MiniDemo described in this report was to verify these two specific improvements. The MiniDemo was conducted on August 28, 2009. In terms of system integration, a hybrid communication interface - combining the RFID item-monitoring features and a commercial vehicle tracking system by Qualcomm - was developed and implemented. In the MiniDemo, the new integrated system worked well in reporting tag status and vehicle location accurately and promptly. There was no incompatibility of components.     Full Text Available Fluctuating Asymmetry (FA is the most frequently used tool for measuring developmental instability. It is used as a measure of ecological stress and a sign of developmental stability of organisms. The study evaluatedthe use of FA in assessing the condition of Scatophagus argus in lower Agusan river basin. High FA values would indicate exposure to polluted aquatic environment. The study selected S. argus because of its observed susceptibility to aquatic pollution in the area. There were a total of 60 samples collected (30 males and 30 females. Using Thin-Plate Spline (TPS series, landmark analyzes were obtained and subjected to Symmetry and Asymmetry in Geometric Data (SAGE software. Procrustes ANOVA showed high significant differences (P<0.0001 to the three measured factors (individuals, sides and interaction of individuals and sides. Similar findings were observed to both male and females samples suggesting high FA values. The principal component analysis was implemented to determine the affected landmarks. More landmarks were affected in males (11 landmarks than in females (5 landmarks. Deformation grids and histograms were used to display the ordination of affected landmarks. The data would be important to environmental planners in the management of lower Agusan river basin. Scores display a high percentage FA of female (70.94% and male (78.67%. In the female samples, PC 1 (33.26% and PC2 (13.53% were found to have significant variations affecting the rostral tip of premaxilla, posterior extremities, and the lateral profile. In the male samples, PC 1 (35.63% and PC 2 (14.24% have the same affected landmarks as in females but have greater variations. Significant levels of FA in the fish morphology are the result of its adaptive mechanism to cope up with the stressed environment.     Currently, houses do not perform optimally or even as many codes and forecasts predict, largely because they are field assembled and there is no consistent process to identify problems or to correct them. Residential commissioning is a solution to this problem. This guide is the culmination of a 30-month project that began in September 1999. The ultimate objective of the project is to increase the number of houses that undergo commissioning, which will improve the quality, comfort, and safety of homes for California citizens. The project goal is to lay the groundwork for a residential commissioning industry in California focused on end-use energy and non-energy issues. As such, we intend this guide to be a beginning and not an end. Our intent is that the guide will lead to the programmatic integration of commissioning with other building industry processes, which in turn will provide more value to a single site visit for people such as home energy auditors and raters, home inspectors, and building performance contractors. Project work to support the development of this guide includes: a literature review and annotated bibliography, which facilitates access to 469 documents related to residential commissioning published over the past 20 years (Wray et al. 2000), an analysis of the potential benefits one can realistically expect from commissioning new and existing California houses (Matson et al. 2002), and an assessment of 107 diagnostic tools for evaluating residential commissioning metrics (Wray et al. 2002). In this guide, we describe the issues that non-experts should consider in developing a commissioning program to achieve the benefits we have identified. We do this by providing specific recommendations about: how to structure the commissioning process, which diagnostics to use, and how to use them to commission new and existing houses.     The analysis of STRs is the main tool when studying genetic diversity in populations or when addressing individual identification in forensic casework. Population data are needed to establish reference databases that can be used in the forensic context. To that end, this work investigated five population samples from Albania, Iraq, Lithuania, Slovenia, and Turkey. Individuals were typed for 16 autosomal STRs and 12 X-chromosomal STRs using the NGMSElect™ and Investigator(®) Argus X-12 kits, respectively. The aim of the study was to characterize the diversity of both STR kits in these population samples and to expand our forensic database. The results showed that all markers were polymorphic in the five populations studied. No haplotype was shared between the males analysed for X-STRs. No statistically significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were observed for any of the genetic markers included in both the kits. Pairwise LD was only detected in X-STRs between markers located in the same linkage group. Power of discrimination values for males and females and the probability of exclusion in duos and trios were high for the populations in this study. PMID:26894835

    Models of species' demographic features are commonly used to understand population dynamics and inform management tactics. Hierarchical demographic models are ideal for the assessment of non-indigenous species because our knowledge of non-indigenous populations is usually limited, data on demographic traits often come from a species' native range, these traits vary among populations, and traits are likely to vary considerably over time as species adapt to new environments. Hierarchical models readily incorporate this spatiotemporal variation in species' demographic traits by representing demographic parameters as multi-level hierarchies. As is done for traditional non-hierarchical matrix models, sensitivity and elasticity analyses are used to evaluate the contributions of different life stages and parameters to estimates of population growth rate. We applied a hierarchical model to northern snakehead (Channa argus), a fish currently invading the eastern United States. We used a Monte Carlo approach to simulate uncertainties in the sensitivity and elasticity analyses and to project future population persistence under selected management tactics. We gathered key biological information on northern snakehead natural mortality, maturity and recruitment in its native Asian environment. We compared the model performance with and without hierarchy of parameters. Our results suggest that ignoring the hierarchy of parameters in demographic models may result in poor estimates of population size and growth and may lead to erroneous management advice. In our case, the hierarchy used multi-level distributions to simulate the heterogeneity of demographic parameters across different locations or situations. The probability that the northern snakehead population will increase and harm the native fauna is considerable. Our elasticity and prognostic analyses showed that intensive control efforts immediately prior to spawning and/or juvenile-dispersal periods would be more effective

  8. Novel Tetra-nucleotide Microsatellite DNA Markers for Assessing the Evolutionary Genetics and Demographics of Northern Snakehead (Channa argus) Invading North America

    We document the isolation and characterization of 19 tetra-nucleotide microsatellite DNA markers in northern snakehead (Channa argus) fish that recently colonized Meadow Lake, New York City, New York. These markers displayed moderate levels of allelic diversity (averaging 6.8 alleles/locus) and heterozygosity (averaging 74.2%). Demographic analyses suggested that the Meadow Lake collection has not achieved mutation-drift equilibrium. These results were consistent with instances of deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and the presence of some linkage disequilibrium. A comparison of individual pair-wise distances suggested the presence of multiple differentiated groups of related individuals. Results of all analyses are consistent with a pattern of multiple, recent introductions. The microsatellite markers developed for C. argus yielded sufficient genetic diversity to potentially: (1) delineate kinship; (2) elucidate fine-scale population structure; (3) define management (eradication) units; (4) estimate dispersal rates; (5) estimate population sizes; and (6) provide unique demographic perspectives of control or eradication effectiveness

    Jupiter’s moon Io is the ideal target to study extreme tidal heating and volcanism, two major processes shaping the formation and evolution of planetary bodies. In response to the 2009 New Frontiers Announcement of Opportunity, we propose an Io Observer mission concept named Argus (after the mythical watchman of Io). This concept was developed by the students of the August 2014 session of NASA’s Planetary Science Summer School, together with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Team X.The science objectives of our mission are: (1) study the physical process of tidal heating and its implications for habitability in the Solar System and beyond; (2) investigate active lava flows on Io as an analog for volcanism on early Earth; (3) analyze the interaction between Io and the Jovian system via material exchange and magnetospheric activity; (4) study Io’s chemistry and geologic history to gain insight into the formation and evolution of the Galilean satellites. Our mission consists of a Jupiter-orbiting spacecraft performing ten close flybys of Io. The orbital inclination of ~31 degrees minimizes the total radiation dose received, at the cost of having to perform fast flybys (13 km/s).The instrument payload includes: (1) IGLOO, a multi-band camera for regional (500 m/pixel) and high-resolution (50 m/pixel) imaging; (2) IoLA, a laser altimeter to measure the triaxial shape and diurnal tidal deformation, and topographic profiles of individual surface features; (3) IGNITERS, a thermal emission radiometer/spectrometer to map nighttime temperatures, thermal inertia, and characterize Io’s atmosphere; (4) IoNIS, a near-infrared spectrometer to map global (10 km/pixel) and local (2 km/pixel) surface composition; (5) IoFLEX, a magnetometer and (6) IoPEX, a plasma particle analyzer to characterize the magnetic environment and understand the nature of Io’s induced and possible intrinsic magnetic fields; (7) IRAGE, a gravity science experiment to probe Io’s interior

  10. Hand-Camera Coordination Varies over Time in Users of the Argus® II Retinal Prosthesis System

    Introduction: Most visual neuroprostheses use an external camera for image acquisition. This adds two complications to phosphene perception: (1) stimulation locus will not change with eye movements; and (2) external cameras can be aimed in directions different from the user’s intended direction of gaze. Little is known about the stability of where users perceive light sources to be or whether they will adapt to changes in camera orientation. Methods: Three end-stage retinitis pigmentosa patients implanted with the Argus II participated in this study. This prosthesis stimulated the retina based on an 18° × 11° area selected within the camera’s 66° × 49° field of view. The center of the electrode array’s field of view mapped within the camera’s field of view is the camera alignment position (CAP). Proper camera alignments minimize errors in localizing visual percepts in space. Subjects touched single white squares in random locations on a darkened touchscreen 40 or more times. To study adaptation, subjects were given intentional CAP misalignments of 15–40° for 5–6 months. Subjects performed this test with auditory feedback during (bi-)weekly lab sessions. Misaligned CAPs were maintained for another 5–6 months without auditory feedback. Touch alignment was tracked to detect any adaptation. To estimate localization stability, data for when CAPs were set to minimize errors were tracked. The same localization test as above was used. Localization errors were tracked every 1–2 weeks for up to 40 months. Results: Two of three subjects used auditory feedback to improve accuracy with misaligned CAPs at an average rate of 0.02°/day (p CAPs varied significantly across test sessions (p CAPs showed an average rate of change of 0.39°/day (SD 0.36°/day). Conclusions: Optimal CAPs varied dramatically over time for all subjects. Subjects displayed no adaptation to misaligned CAPs without feedback. Regular recalibration of CAPs may be required to maintain

    By suppression subtractive hybridization,rapid amplification of cDNA ends and gene walking methods,interferon stimulated genes (ISGs),Viperin and ISG15,and their promoters have been cloned and characterized from snakehead Channa argus.The Viperin cDNA was found to be 1474 nt and contain an open reading frame(ORF)of 1059 nt that translates into a putative peptide of 352amino acid(aa).The putative peptide of Viperin shows high identity to that in teleosts and mamals except for the N-terminal 70 aa.The ISG15 cDNA was found to be 758 nt and contain an ORF of 468 nt that translates into a putative peptide of 155 aa.The putative peptide of ISG15 is composed of two tandem repeats of ubiquitin-like(UBL)domains,and a canonical conjugation motif(LRGG)at C-terminal.Viperin and ISG15 promoter regions were characterized by the presence of interferon stimulating response elements(ISRE)and γ-IFN activation sites (GAS).ISRE is a feature of IFN-induced gene promoter and partially overlaps interferon regulatory factor (IRF)1 and IRF2 recognition sites.GAS is responsible for the γ-IFN mediated transcription.One conserved site for NF-kB was found in the promoter region of Viperin.This is the first report of conservative binding motif for NF-kB in accordance with the consensus sequence(GGGRNNYYCC)among teleost ISG promoters.Moreover,there were also TATA,CAAT and Spl transcription factor sites in Viperin and ISG15 promoters.In 5'untranslated region (UTR),snakehead ISG15 gene contains a single intron,which differs from Viperin gene.The transcripts of Vipeirn and ISG15 mRNA were mainly expressed in head kidney,posterior kidney,spleen and gill.The expression levels in liver were found to increase obviously in response to induction by IFN-inducer poly I:C.

  12. Commissioning the Majorana Demonstrator

    The Majorana Demonstrator deploys high purity germanium (HPGe) detector modules to search for neutrinoless double beta (0 νββ) decay in 76Ge. The experiment is aimed at demonstrating the technical feasibility and low backgrounds for a next generation Ge-based BBz experiment. The program of testing and commissioning the Demonstrator modules is a critical step to debug and improve the experimental apparatus, to establish and refine operational procedures, and to develop data analysis tools. In this talk, we will discuss our experience commissioning the Demonstrator modules and show how this program leads to successful data-taking.     The construction and first commissioning phase of the Booster synchrotron to inject into Brookhaven's veteran Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) were completed last year. Scheduled to come into operation this year, the new Booster will extend the research capabilities AGS, and with its ability to accelerate partially stripped heavy ions will play an essential role in the chain of accelerators serving the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC)

  15. KSTAR construction and commissioning

    KSTAR's twelve years project has been officially completed by declaring the first plasma achievement on July 15th, 2008. KSTAR, the fist Nb3Sn-based fully superconducting tokamak device, has come a long path, overcoming many difficult situations. The detailed engineering design and infrastructure setup for R and D have been completed in 2001. In March 2008, after the construction period of seven years, the KSTAR assembly has been completed, by connecting the cryogenic transfer lines between the tokamak and the cryogenic distribution system within six months in the condition of preliminary study. The commissioning on KSTAR has been progressed from April to July, through the following four steps: vacuum, cryogenic cool down, superconducting magnet test, and plasma start-up. KSTAR has successfully passed the vacuum and cool down commissioning at the first trial. As scheduled, the basic environment with the vacuum at 3 x 10-8 mbar and the temperature below 4.5K has maintained without any cold helium leak. Next, all of the superconducting magnets have been conducted using the integrated plasma control system (PCS) for fast current and position control. The first plasma discharge has been initiated under time synchronized operation of the power supplies, the ECH pre-ionization system, the gas-puffing system, and the initial set of diagnostics systems. After about 400 successive test plasma discharges, during which plasma was successfully controlled with a flat-top current of 120 KA, duration of up to 800 ms has been obtained at KSTAR. All of the commissioning contents, such as objectives, must-check items, target parameters, and commissioning results, will be presented in this paper. Specifically, various histories, such as vacuum, temperature, stress, plasma shot, and machine failure, will be reported. (author)

  6. Commissioning of GERDA

    The study of neutrinoless double beta decay (DBD) is the most powerful approach to the fundamental question if the neutrino is a Majorana particle, i.e. its own anti-particle. The observation of neutrinoless DBD would not only establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino but also represent a determination of its effective mass if the nuclear matrix element is given. So far, the most sensitive results have been obtained with Ge-76, and the group of Klapdor-Kleingrothaus has made a claim of discovery. Future experiments have to reduce radioactive backgrounds to increase the sensitivity. The GERmanium Detector Array, GERDA, is a new DBD experiment which is currently being commissioned at the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory, Italy. It is implementing a new shielding concept by operating bare Ge diodes - enriched in Ge-76 - in high purity liquid argon supplemented by a water shield. The aim of GERDA is to verify or refute the recent claim of discovery, and, in a second phase, to achieve a two orders of magnitude lower background index than recent experiments. The paper discusses the commissioning of GERDA and present first results from a technical run with a string of three natural Ge diodes.

    With the superconducting electron accelerator nearing completion at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) in Newport News, Virginia, activities preliminary to commissioning the five-pass recirculating machine are intensifying. CEBAF will use beams at 4 GeV and above in three experimental halls to explore the region between nuclear and particle physics — between seeing the nucleus as a bound state of nucleons and seeing it as an assembly of quarks and gluons. CEBAFs first major commissioning goal is single-pass beam to Hall C in 1994. By October, only the final four of 42 1/4 eight-cavity, nominally 20 MeV cryomodules remained to be installed in the racetrack-shaped machine.     Aiming to assess the consequences of abandoning the employment of highly enriched nuclear fuel (HEU) in the reactor engineering, the opportunity has been studied to convert the 'Argus-90' reactor operating with the uranyl sulphate water solution fuel of 90% enrichment in uranium-235 to low-enriched fuel (LEU) of ∼20% enrichment. A unified technology for the preparation of a solution fuel of 20% and 90% enrichment in U-235 has been confirmed. The effect of low-enriched fuel on the core neutronics parameters has been studied as well as on the efficiency of operating controls of the reactor control and protection system and radiolytic parameters of the solution fuel.   11. SSCL Commissioning and Operations

    The SSC, with an energy of 20 TeV/Beam, requires a sequence of individual accelerators of increasing energy in the injector chain. These are the Linac, Low Energy Booster, Medium Energy Booster, and High Energy Booster. Each accelerator system must be completed in sequence in order to provide beam to the next higher energy accelerator. The collider itself is comprised of ten sectors, each of which in terms of superconducting magnet bending strength, is equivalent to two HEB injectors. The completion of all injectors and collider sectors is required before stored beams can circulate in preparation for colliding beam operation. Four experimental halls are planned for the detector systems. Each major detector will be assembled in one of the halls by a world-wide collaboration of scientists. In addition, above ground facilities provide shops and test facilities for accelerator technical systems, superconducting magnet and materials research and development, and for detector assembly and operations. The purpose of this report is to present a plan for the sequential commissioning and operation of these individual accelerators and other technical facilities of the SSC. A central objective of this plan is to describe the activities at the SSCL that are not included as part of the construction project TPC, even though they occur during the overall project construction time-frame. Examples of such activities include the operation of general laboratory facilities and services not specifically related to construction, the operating costs for the individual accelerators in the injector chain once these facilities have been commissioned, and the costs of SSCL physics research groups.     The ATLAS Readout group (a sub-group of TDAQ) has now completed the installation and commissioning of all of the Readout System (ROS) units. Event data from ATLAS is initially handled by detector specific hardware and software, but following a Level 1 Accept the data passes from the detector specific Readout Drivers (RODs) to the ROS, the first stage of the central ATLAS DAQ. Within the final ATLAS TDAQ system the ROS stores the data and on request makes it available to the Level 2 Trigger (L2) processors and to the Event Builder (EB) as required. The ROS is implemented as a large number of PCs housing custom built cards (ROBINs) and running custom multi-threaded software. Each ROBIN card (shown below) contains buffer memories to store the data, plus a field programmable gate array ( FPGA ) and an embedded PowerPC processor for management of the memories and data requests, and is implemented as a 64-bit 66 MHz PCI card.     An important milestone has been passed in the preparation of the injector complex to supply ions to the LHC experiments. The LEIR lead-ion beam, seen on one of the control screens just before the PS injection region. The Low-Energy Ion Ring - LEIR for short - has passed its first tests with flying colours. On 12 May, the ring that will accumulate lead ions for the LHC was shut down after seven months of tests (see Bulletin 44/2005). 'The commissioning phase was a resounding success,' enthuses a satisfied Michel Chanel, head of the LEIR construction project. After several months of fine-tuning, the LEIR team has achieved its aim of producing the kind of beam required for first lead-ion collisions in the LHC in 2008.     The most intensely discussed and controversial issue in time keeping has been the proposal before the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to redefine Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) so as to replace leap seconds by leap hours. Should this proposal be adopted, the practice of inserting leap seconds would cease after a specific date. Should the Earth's rotation continue to de-accelerate at its historical rate, the next discontinuity in UTC would be an hour inserted several centuries from now. Advocates of this proposal cite the need to synchronize satellite and other systems, such as GPS, Galileo, and GLONASS, which did not exist and were not envisioned when the current system was adopted. They note that leap second insertions can be and have been incorrectly implemented or accounted for. Such errors have to date had localized impact, but they could cause serious mishaps involving loss of life. For example, some GPS receivers have been known to fail simply because there was no leap second after a long enough interval, other GPS receivers failed because the leap second information was broadcast more than three months in advance, and some commercial software used for internet time-transfer Network Time Protocol (NTP) could either discard all data received after a leap second or interpret it as a frequency change. The ambiguity associated with the extra second could also disrupt financial accounting and certain forms of encryption. Those opposed to the proposal question the need for a change, and also point out the costs of adjusting to the proposed change and its inconvenience to amateur astronomers and others who rely upon astronomical calculations published in advance. Reports have been circulated that the cost of checking and correcting software to accommodate the new definition of UTC would be many millions of dollars for some systems.   3. Measurement of the decays DS+ → φe+ν and D+ → anti K*0e+ν with the detector ARGUS

    Using the data collected with the ARGUS detector at the e+e- storage ring DORIS II, a new method for studying semileptonic charm decays in continuum production is introduced. This technique is based on charm tagging with electrons by exploiting kinematical correlations between the decay products. From the analysis of φ-electron correlations, the first observation of the decay Ds+→φe+ν is made. The cross-section times branching ratio is determined to be (4.1±1.0±0.8)pb at a center-of-mass energy of 10.55 GeV. K*0-electron correlations are used to observe the decay D+→anti K*0 e+ν with a new value of (5.0±0.7±1.2)% for the branching ratio. SU(3) symmetry predicts the partial widths for both decay modes to be equal. Taking into account SU(3) breaking corrections, this relation allows one to derive the cross-section of the Ds from this measurement, which comes out to be (0.24±0.09)nb at a center-of-mass energy of 10.55 GeV.     An emended diagnosis of Metahaliotrema Yamaguti, 1953 (Monogenoidea: Dactylogyridae) is provided based on specimens of six species collected from the spotted scat Scatophagus argus (Linnaeus) (Scatophagidae) in Vietnam: M. scatophagi Yamaguti, 1953 (type-species); M. cf. yamagutii Mizelle & Price, 1964; M. mizellei Venkatanarasaiah, 1981; M. kulkarnii Venkatanarasaiah, 1981; M. ypsilocleithrum n. sp.; and M. similis n. sp. Methaliotrema filamentosum Venkatanarasaiah, 1981 from the whipfin silver-biddy Gerres filamentosus Cuvier (Gerreidae) is included as the only other valid member of the genus. Metahaliotrema arii Yamaguti, 1953 from an ariid catfish is considered incertae sedis within the Dactylogyridae; and Metahaliotrema srivastavai Singh & Agarwal, 1994 from a bagrid catfish is transferred to Chauhanellus Bychowsky & Nagibina, 1969 as Chauhanellus srivastavai (Singh & Agarwal, 1994) n. comb.     Geographic information system (GIS) technology has become an important tool for scientific investigation, resource management, and environmental planning. A GIS is a computer-aided system capable of collecting, storing, analyzing, and displaying spatially referenced digital data. GIS technology is useful for analyzing a wide variety of spatial data. Remote sensing involves collecting remotely sensed data, such as satellite imagery, aerial photography, or radar images, and analyzing the data to gather information or investigate trends about the environment or the Earth's surface. Spatial analysis combines remotely sensed, thematic, statistical, quantitative, and geographical data through overlay, modeling, and other analytical techniques to investigate specific research questions. It is the combination of data formats and analysis techniques that has made GIS an essential tool in scientific investigations. This fact sheet presents information about the technical capabilities and project activities of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Texas Water Science Center (TWSC) GIS Workgroup during 2008 and 2009. After a summary of GIS Workgroup capabilities, brief descriptions of activities by project at the local and national levels are presented.   16. Pharmaceutical compounds in Merrimack River water used for public supply, Lowell, Massachusetts, 2008-09

    This report presents results of a study conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, to determine the occurrence of 14 commonly used human-health pharmaceutical compounds and fecal-indicator bacteria in Merrimack River water used as a drinking-water source by 135,000 residents in eastern Massachusetts. The study was designed to complement the USGS National Water-Quality Assessment Program's Source Water-Quality Assessment, which identifies patterns of occurrence of 280 primarily unregulated organic wastewater contaminants in source water used by community water systems and determines whether these patterns also occur in treated drinking water prior to distribution. The study involved periodic collection and analysis of raw Merrimack River water and treated drinking water over the course of 1 year. Water samples were collected periodically without regard to flow regime or antecedent weather conditions at the Lowell Regional Water Utility's Merrimack River intake upstream from Lowell, Mass. The same parcel of water was then sampled as finished water following treatment. Despite the presence of many potential sources of contamination in the drinking-water source area, only 2 of the 14 pharmaceutical analytes were detected at reportable concentrations in the source-water samples, and these occurred in only one set of periodic samples. Acetaminophen, a nonprescription analgesic, and caffeine were detected in the September source-water samples at concentrations of 0.084 and 0.068 micrograms per liter, respectively. Three other compounds-carbamazepine, an antiepileptic; cotinine, a metabolite of nicotine; and diphenhydramine, a nonprescription antihistamine-were detected in source-water samples, but at concentrations too low to be reliably quantified. None of the 14 pharmaceuticals was found in the finished water at a reportable concentration, defined as two times the long-term detection limit used by the analytical laboratory. In addition to the pharmaceutical analyses, measurements of fecal-indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli) concentrations and several physical characteristics were made on all source-water samples. Values for these constituents were consistently within State standards. It is possible that the monthly sampling schedule missed hydrologic events that would have transported greater concentrations of sewage contaminants to the sampling site, or that the large flow volume of the river at the study site effectively diluted the contaminant signal, but it is also likely that recent efforts to separate stormwater- and wastewater-discharge systems in the reaches upstream from the Lowell Regional Water Utility have greatly reduced the potential for sewage contamination at the intake.

    This project placed an experienced technology entrepreneur at Oak Ridge National Lab, one of DOE's premier laboratories undertaking cutting edge research in a variety of fields, including energy technologies. With the goal of accelerating the commercialization of advanced energy technologies, the task was to review available technologies at the lab and identify those that qualify for licensing and commercialization by a private startup company, backed by private venture capital. During the project, more than 1,500 inventions filed at the lab were reviewed over a 1 year period; a successively smaller number was selected for more detailed review, ultimately resulting in five, and then 1 technology, being reviewed for immediate commercialization. The chosen technology, consisting in computational chemistry based approached to optimization of enzymes, was tested in lab experiments, paid for by funds raised by ORNL for the purpose of proving out the effectiveness of the technology and readiness for commercialization. The experiments proved out that the technology worked however it's performance proved not yet mature enough to qualify for private venture capital funded commercialization in a high tech startup. As a consequence, the project did not result in a new startup company being formed, as originally intended.

    In European Union Member States, the use of radioactive sources is subject to the requirements set out by the radiation protection legislation adopted pursuant to Chapter III of the Euratom Treaty. That the Commission's approach to enhancing safety in the Union is fully in line with the Euratom Treaty was supported by the recent European Court of Justice decision that radiation protection cannot be separated from the safety of sources of radioactivity. The Commission has carried out several actions aimed at minimizing the risk to the public as well as to the environment arising from the use of radioactive sources. Within the framework of its activities in the field of radioactive waste management, the Commission published in 2000 a study on the management and disposal of disused sealed radioactive sources. The report estimated that approximately 500 000 sealed sources have been supplied during the past 50 years to operators in the Union's current 15 Member States. Of these 500 000 sources, approximately 110 000 are currently in use. Recently the Commission adopted a new Directive that will cover the most dangerous of these sources. Concerning security in the longer term, it is very important to have a disposal route for many of these sources. In summary, the Commission places great importance on the safety and security of radioactive sources. Existing Community legislation already helps to ensure this, but new proposed legislation will be a major step forward in guaranteeing such safety and security in the future

  10. Douglas Point Generating Station Commissioning

    This paper discusses a number of the interesting experiences encountered at the Douglas Point Nuclear Power Station. Sufficient background with respect to the basic process, equipment location, and commissioning history is given so that those not familiar with the station may follow the remainder of the paper. Three commissioning philosophies followed in the commissioning of Canadian nuclear power stations are mentioned: (1) no ordinary water used for commissioning heavy-water systems: (2) fuelling machines used for initial fuel loading; (3) no portable steam-generating equipment for preliminary turbine-generator run up. Against this background the following experiences are mentioned: low power physics measurements; fuel channel replacement and faulty booster removal; heat transport pressure control; ion-exchange resin in the heat transport system; heat transport pumps; boiler level control; possible fretting of pressure tubes; turbine operation; heavy-water experience. The paper concludes by mentioning some important lessons learned from the experience to date and states confidence in the future of Douglas Point Generating Station, and future Canadian nuclear power stations.     The laser integration line (LIL) facility is currently a 4-beam prototype for the laser Megajoule (LMJ). Following LIL single beamline commissioning in 2003, where performance in terms of power and energy required for LMJ was demonstrated, we spent year 2004 to qualify the quadruplet (or quad) performance at 1{omega}/3{omega}. Over that year, the first quad high power and high energy laser experiments took place on LIL facility. A careful set of test campaigns were conducted to safely ramp up laser performance. The main goal was to measure quad-specific features such as beam synchronization and focal spot (size, smoothing contrast ratio or irradiation nonuniformity {sigma}(rms) versus the LMJ requirements. LIL Quad beam waist was recorded for various pulse durations, smoothing techniques and for a wide range of laser intensities up to LMJ-nominal ones. Now, LIL quad has been commissioned to the center of the target chamber and the first plasma experiments are made. (authors)

    Primary Health Networks (PHNs) have been tasked with two key objectives to be achieved through commissioning. Public value aims can be achieved by developing operational capability in the context of an authorising environment. Public value will need to focus on system level outcomes from multiple perspectives, including a consumer perspective. The authorising environment will require policymakers to allow time for PHNs to mature into their role. It will require an environment of effective collaboration amongst multiple stakeholders including consumers. The operational capability will need to ensure highly competent managers and clinical leadership working in a symbiotic relationship. Although some Medicare Locals demonstrated commissioning capacity and capability, this will need to be scaled up at-pace in the new healthcare landscape in order for PHNs to optimally fulfil their roles. As a step towards this, Syarikat Chain Cycle Sdn Bhd (CCSB) has been awarded a contract by the Government of Malaysia (GOM) to design, install, test and commission a Thermal Oxidation Plant (TOP) with a capacity of 40 t/day to treat the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) generated in Labuan.     This new study develops an algorithm for Short Wave upwelling Radiative Flux (SWupRF) for the spectral variations within near infrared (NIR) from 1100 to 1700 nm wavelength band based on remote sensing data set of Argus 1000 micro-spectrometer observations. We calculate the SWupRF by investigating the total radiative flux due to O2, H2O, CO2 and CH4 and also by the individual gas within the selected wavelength bands of interest. A GENSPECT synthetic line by line radiative transfer model is applied to perform radiative transfer simulations to calculate the radiative flux by varying surface albedo, mixing ratios of the selected greenhouse gases, surface temperature, solar sun and zenith angles with different latitude and longitude of the instrument. Finally, the SWupRFsyn estimated from GENSPECT was compared with SWupRFobs from Argus 1000 over a period of four years (2009 and 2013) covering all seasons.     The major progress made during the last months has been in the consolidation of services for the +endcaps and three barrel wheels (YB+2, YB+1 and YB0): all subdetectors have now final power connections (including Detector Safety protection), the gas systems have been commissioned for all gas detectors (the recirculation is not yet activated for the RPC though) and detector cooling has also been commissioned. Their integration with final services is the necessary condition for being able to operate larger fractions the detector. Recent weeks have seen full HCAL, more than 50% of EB and full wheels of DTs and CSC being operated using final services. This has not yet translated into major progress of global integration due to major interruptions of central services, which have not allowed the necessary debugging and commissioning time to all the subdetec¬tors and central activities like DAQ and trigger.     The global commissioning campaign begins this year with a series of weekly two-day global runs of limited participation until mid-March. The aim of these runs varies week-to-week, but includes the commissioning the calorimeter triggers, the muon track-finder triggers in the DT/CSC overlap, the PLL locking ranges, and generally accumulating data either for HCAL noise characterization or detector studies with cosmic muons. In mid-March a full Global Run is scheduled with all components participating, followed in April by a Cosmic Run with the aim of collecting statistics over a couple weeks with the installed Tracker and other subsystems. The ultimate milestone is the Cosmic Run At Four Tesla (CRAFT), with a completed CMS closed and the solenoid energized for data-taking during June.     Aims and method Previous studies have shown variations in commissioning of neuropsychiatry services and this makes access to neuropsychiatric services a post-code lottery. In this survey, we approached all mental health and neuropsychiatric service commissioners within London to map current funding and commissioning arrangements, and explored perceived barriers to neuropsychiatric service commissioning. Results 83% of commissioners within London responded. There was significant variability between neuropsychiatric services commissioned through the mental health stream. Contracting arrangements were variable. Lack of earmarked fund for neuropsychiatry and disjointed funding stream for such services were identified by commissioners as a barrier, as was the critical mass of neuropsychiatric cases. Clinical implications Neuropsychiatric service development continues to be hindered by lack of clear commissioning process. Strategic drive is needed to promote more equitable neuropsychiatric services. National or regional commissioning covering a large population will provide a better model for neuropsychiatric services to be commissioned. PMID:26755989

    This series of slides presents the Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation (INSC) that was launched by the European Commission to promote an effective nuclear safety structure through continuous support for regulatory bodies, technical support organizations (TSOs) and the reinforcement of the regulatory framework, notably concerning the licensing activities. Since 1991 TACIS program has provided support to the improvement to the nuclear safety regulatory framework. Over these years, support was granted to design safety, regulatory and licensing activities, on-site assistance to nuclear power plants including supply of equipment, waste management and the contribution to international initiatives related to licensing activities. The results have been assessed through the RISKAUDIT's methodology and significant progress have been achieved in Russia, Ukraine and Armenia.     The central commissioning activities have concentrated mostly in the Service cavern. Since early February the central DAQ has been ready to accept connections from FEDs from the various partitions. This has triggered a campaign from all subdetectors to install their readout crates in USC55. Systematic tests of the connections between FEDs and Central DAQ have been scheduled and to date more than 70% of all FED connections have been successfully tested from almost all subdetectors. In March the Level 1 trigger team started deployment of their hardware followed by a campaign of testing the connections between Trigger primitive generators and the corresponding LV1 hardware (Regional Calorimeter Trigger and Global Muon Trigger). The functionality tests are continuing to date by pattern tests of increasing complexity.     The commissioning of the RHIC spin flipper in the RHIC Blue ring during the RHIC polarized proton run in 2009 showed the detrimental effects of global vertical coherent betatron oscillation induced by the 2-AC dipole plus 4-DC dipole configuration. This global orbital coherent oscillation of the RHIC beam in the Blue ring in the presence of collision modulated the beam-beam interaction between the two RHIC beams and affected Yellow beam polarization. The experimental data at injection with different spin tunes by changing the snake current also demonstrated that it was not possible to induce a single isolated spin resonance with the global vertical coherent betatron oscillation excited by the two AC dipoles. Hence, a new design was proposed to eliminate the coherent vertical betatron oscillation outside the spin flipper by adding three additional AC dipoles. The crucial question this paper poses is whether such tribunals are effective or otherwise in terms of the benefits and outcomes accrued from their findings. The paper is in the form of a critical discussion which investigates and analyses the Inquiries using the method of desk research of official documents over the last 50 years from which it identifies common findings and recommendations contained in the official discourse. The research concludes that lessons have not been learned in relation to policing operations, accountability and integrity in a number of cases and highlights a variety of adverse issues that persist into current policing practice.

Among them, scientific highlights are the progress of pulsar time scales and the optical frequency standards. On the other hand, as the social convention, change in the definition of UTC and the second is important.

    The new DRAGON (Detector of Recoils And Gammas Of Nuclear reactions) facility, located at the TRIUMF-ISAC radioactive beams laboratory in Vancouver, Canada, has initiated its experimental program. Recently DRAGON was used for initial studies of the sup 2 sup 1 Na(p,gamma) sup 2 sup 2 Mg reaction. This facility was designed to measure absolutely the rates of radiative proton and alpha capture reactions of astrophysical interest to a precision of +-20%, using inverse kinematics. To fully understand the optics and operational parameters of the facility along with the transmission particularly of the reaction recoils, systematic studies of various configurations are in progress using stable beams along with measurements of well-known resonance reactions. The status of these commissioning studies is presented.

For new construction and retrofit projects, commissioning should be incorporated early, during design, and last throughout the length of the project. For buildings that were never commissioned, the retrocommissioning process can yield a wealth of cost-saving opportunities while enhancing a building's environment.
