    The 1st Puerto Rico Biobanking Workshop took place on August 20st, 2014 in the Auditorium of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus in San Juan Puerto Rico. The program for this 1-day, live workshop included lectures by three biobanking experts, followed by presentations from existing biobanks in Puerto Rico and audience discussion. The need for increasing biobanking expertise in Puerto Rico stems from the fact that Hispanics in general are underrepresented in the biobanks in existence in the US, which limits the research conducted specifically to understand the molecular differences in cancer cells compared to other better studied populations. In turn, this lack of information impairs the development of better diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for our population. Dr. James Robb, M.D., F.C.A.P., consulting pathologist to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Office of Biorepositories and Biospecimen Research (OBBR), opened the workshop with a discussion on the basic aspects of the science of biobanking (e.g., what is a biobank; its goals and objectives; protocols and procedures) in his talk addressing the importance of banking tissues for advancing biomedical research. Next, Dr. Gustavo Stefanoff, from the Cancer Institutes Network of Latin America (RINC by its name in Spanish), explained the mission, objectives, and structure of the Network of Latin-American and Caribbean Biobanks (REBLAC by its name in Spanish), which despite limited resources and many challenges, currently accrue high quality human tissue specimens and data to support cancer research in the region. Dr. Robert Hunter-Mellado, Professor of Internal Medicine, Universidad Central del Caribe, followed with an examination of the ethical and regulatory aspects of biobanking tissues for future research, including informed consent of subjects; protection of human subjects rights; and balancing risks and benefit ratios.     Cytosolic sulfotransferases (SULTs) constitute a family of Phase II detoxification enzymes that are involved in the protection against potentially harmful xenobiotics as well as the regulation and homeostasis of endogenous compounds. Compared with humans and rodents, the zebrafish serves as an excellent model for studying the role of SULTs in the detoxification of environmental pollutants including environmental estrogens. By searching the expressed sequence tag database, two zebrafish cDNAs encoding putative SULTs were identified. Sequence analysis indicated that these two putative zebrafish SULTs belong to the SULT1 gene family. The recombinant form of these two novel zebrafish SULTs, designated SULT1 ST7 and SULT1 ST8, were expressed using the pGEX-2TK glutathione S-transferase (GST) gene fusion system and purified from transformed BL21 (DE3) cells. Purified GST-fusion protein form of SULT1 ST7 and SULT1 ST8 exhibited strong sulfating activities toward environmental estrogens, particularly hydroxylated polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), among various endogenous and xenobiotic compounds tested as substrates. pH-dependence experiments showed that SULT1 ST7 and SULT1 ST8 displayed pH optima at 6.5 and 8.0, respectively. Kinetic parameters of the two enzymes in catalyzing the sulfation of catechin and chlorogenic acid as well as 3-chloro-4-biphenylol were determined. Developmental expression experiments revealed distinct patterns of expression of SULT1 ST7 and SULT1 ST8 during embryonic development and throughout the larval stage onto maturity.

    The report investigates changes in the wholesale and end user market after the enforcement of the Energy Act of the 1st January 1991 and compares to the report from the NVE of the 1st January 1993. The wholesale market: The average price for contracts is calculated to 14,2 oere/kWh for 1994 which is 8 % less than in 1993. The largest reduction of the average price is for the contracts made before the enforcement of the Energy Act of 1991 and new contracts made with new deliverers after the 1st of January 1991. The average price for renegotiated contracts is somewhat above the price for new contracts. The standard deviation for the average prices is reduced from 1993 to 1994 for all types of contracts. Hence the competition has lead to a certain equilibration of prices. Most contracts have still fixed prices. The investigation shows that after the enforcement of the Energy Act contracts of about 45 TWh are made with a new deliverer or renegotiated. This amounts to about 80 % of the contract volume and is an increase of 10 % from the last investigation. The end user market. Households: The average price to households was 14,7 oere/kWh for 1994 which is 2 % less than in 1993. The largest price reduction is on renegotiated contracts. This is connected to the fact that the average price for renegotiated contracts by the 1st of January 1993 is somewhat above the average price for old and new contracts. This picture has changed and renegotiated contracts are now more in tune with the average price for other contracts. 5,6 % of the household customers have renegotiated their contracts or made contracts with new deliverers after enforcement of the Energy Act of 1991. It is mostly the housing corporations that have received the lowest average price re negotiation. The H4-tariff is the predominant offer to the households.     The granuloma gravidarum is a rare benign tumour with gingival origin. It occurs in circa 0.2% of pregnancies. Mostly we see an asymptomatic course of disease terminated by hormonal changes after delivery. If the granuloma is associated with complaints of the pregnant woman, for example masticational pain or recurrent bleedings, therapeutic options are conservative therapy, surgery or delivery. We report the case of a 37-year-old 1st gravida, 1st para who had an induced delivery in the 39+2 gestational week because of a symptomatic granuloma gravidarum. We saw a spontaneous remission of the granuloma within 3 months post partum. The case report underlines the importance of suitable information for pregnant women about oral hygiene and the necessity of regular dental controls during pregnancy for prophylaxis of granuloma gravidarum.     The Australian National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) manages Earth Systems data collections sourced from several domains and organisations onto a single High Performance Data (HPD) Node to further Australia's national priority research and innovation agenda. The NCI HPD Node has rapidly established its value, currently managing over 10 PBytes of datasets from collections that span a wide range of disciplines including climate, weather, environment, geoscience, geophysics, water resources and social sciences. Importantly, in order to facilitate broad user uptake, maximise reuse and enable transdisciplinary access through software and standardised interfaces, the datasets, associated information systems and processes have been incorporated into the design and operation of a unified platform that NCI has called, the National Environmental Research Data Interoperability Platform (NERDIP). The key goal of the NERDIP is to regularise data access so that it is easily discoverable, interoperable for different domains and enabled for high performance methods. It adopts and implements international standards and data conventions, and promotes scientific integrity within a high performance computing and data analysis environment. NCI has established a rich and flexible computing environment to access to this data, through the NCI supercomputer; a private cloud that supports both domain focused virtual laboratories and in-common interactive analysis interfaces; as well as remotely through scalable data services. Data collections of this importance must be managed with careful consideration of both their current use and the needs of the end-communities, as well as its future potential use, such as transitioning to more advanced software and improved methods.     The mean age at marriage in Bangladesh with a population of 110 million has increased from 13 to 1931 to 18 in 1992. Yet 80% of women give birth during their teens. 80% live in the countryside, only 35% complete primary school, and only 22% of women are literate (44% of men). By 1990, girls primary school attendance increased to 45% from 31% in 1970. Between 1960 and 1990 per capita calorie consumption had declined from 2300 calories/day. Maternal mortality was 600/100,000 live births. The projection of a population of 220 million people by 2025 could result in even more dire health prospects for these women. Since independence in 1971, family planning (FP) using paramedics has expanded in rural areas. Nongovernmental organizations supported urban efforts by promoting pills and condoms under the largest social marketing project. The contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) increased to 40% by 1991, and the average number of children dropped from 7 in 1971 to 4 in 1990. The main components of child survival are breast feeding, oral rehydration therapy (ORT), and immunization. 300,000 children die annually from diarrhea, but ORT use has surged in recent years curtailing expected deaths in the wake of the 1988 and 1991 natural disasters. In 1991, immunization coverage reached 85% from under 5% in 1985. The expanded program of immunization (EPI) also integrated FP in pilot upazilas (districts) with a simultaneous increase of both CPR and EPI coverage resulting in improved child survival. There are 100,000 EPI outreaches contracting 80% of mothers with FP counseling, iron supplementation, screening risk delivery, vitamin A supplementation, oral rehydration solution distribution, and nutritional counseling. 3 phases of the classical demographic transition have taken place in Bangladesh but the population will keep increasing until stability is reached with fertility and mortality in balance that EPI and FP can help ensure.     Full Text Available This research attempts to explore the challenges and issues which local automotive component suppliers face as they make the transition to cockpit module suppliers. The paper firstly provides a description of modularity and then discusses the changing supplier roles and relationships in modular outsourcing. An exploratory case study approach involving two suppliers and one OEM is then used to investigate these themes and provide some insights into the motivations and implications for local component suppliers becoming cockpit module suppliers. The paper argues that there are a number of key issues facing suppliers and OEMs in their quest for modular production and supply. These relate to local expertise, supplier management, financial risk, and on-site/off-site (proximity operations. This study sheds light on important emerging trends within automotive 1st tier/OEM relationships, in particular issues relating to changing supplier roles.

  18. NCI at Frederick Contributes to Feds Feed Families | Poster

    Once again, NCI at Frederick participated in the annual Feds Feed Families event, which challenges federal workers to help knock out hunger with a food drive. This year, NIH collected 26,315 pounds of non-perishable goods, beating its goal of collecting 20,000 pounds. This includes over four tons of food that was collected at satellite locations, including NCI at Frederick. The food collected at NCI at Frederick was donated locally to the Frederick Rescue Mission. These donations help feed local families in need through the holiday season.

    Thailand has engaged in remote sensing satellite technological and scientific development many years since early 1980s. Thailand Landsat Station was established as a regional center of data processing and dissemination for Thai scientists for data applications. Over the years, GISTDA and Thai user community have been gaining technical experience and expertise in satellite data applications around the country such natural resources and environmental management, forest inventory, forest change detections, soil mapping, land-use and land cover mapping, crop type mapping, coastal shrimp farming, flood zone mapping, base mapping, water and drought management. The Government of Thailand realizes that remote sensing satellite technology is an important mechanism for social and economic development of the country. So the 1st Thailand Earth Observation System (THEOS) development program was approved by the Government since 2003. THEOS system is sub-synchronous satellite orbiting around the earth at 822 km. altitude same as SPOT satellites. It carries two imaging instruments; 2-m Panchromatic telescope with 22 km. swath width and 15-m resolution camera with four-multi-spectral band and 90-km swath wide. THEOS is scheduled to launch around March 2008. A number of technological and scientific activities has been implementing for Thailand and international scientific user community. Therefore THEOS is strong endorsement from the Government of Thailand on the value of remote sensing technology. This paper presents Thailand EO activities including THEOS System and its plans.

Presently, there are no turn-key instrumentation system solutions that meet the measurement needs of the marine energy industry. The 1st Advanced Marine Renewable Energy Instrumentation Experts Workshop brought together technical experts from government laboratories, academia, and industry representatives from marine energy, wind, offshore oil and gas, and instrumentation developers to present and discuss the instrumentation needs of the marine energy industry. The goals of the meeting were to: 1. Share the latest relevant knowledge among technical experts; 2. Review relevant state-of-the-art field measurement technologies and methods; 3. Review lessons learned from recent field deployments; 4. Identify synergies across different industries; 5. Identify gaps between existing and needed instrumentation capabilities; 6.   13. SOURCE 1ST 2.0: development and beta testing

    SOURCE 1ST 2.0 is the Industry Standard fission product release code that is being developed by Ontario Power Generation, New Brunswick Power, Hydro-Quebec, and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. This paper is a report on recent progress on requirement specification, code development, and module verification and validation activities. The theoretical basis for each model in the code is described in a module Software Theory Manual. The development of SOURCE IST 2.0 has required code design decisions about how to implement the software requirements. Development and module testing of the β1 release of SOURCE IST 2.0 (released in July 1999) have led to some interesting insights into fission product release modelling. The beta testing process has allowed code developers and analysts to refine the software requirements for the code. The need to verify physical reference data has guided some decisions on the code and data structure design. Examples of these design decisions are provided. Module testing, and verification and validation activities are discussed. These activities include code-targeted testing, stress testing, code inspection, comparison of code with requirements, and comparison of code results with independent algebraic, numerical, or semi-algebraic calculations. The list of isotopes to be modelled by SOURCE IST 2.0 provides an example of a subset of a reference data set. Isotopes are present on the list for a variety of reasons: personnel or public dose, equipment dose (for environmental qualification), fission rate and actinide modelling, or stable (or long-lived) targets for activation processes. To accommodate controlled changes to the isotope list, the isotope list and associated nuclear data are contained in a reference data file. The questions of multiple computing platforms, and of Year 2000 compliance have been addressed by programming rules for the code.   14. Morbidity mortality paradox of 1st generation Greek Australians.

    There is evidence in Australia that 1st generation Greek Australians (GA), despite their high prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors (e.g. obesity, diabetes, hyperlipidaemia, smoking, hypertension, sedentary lifestyles) continue to display more than 35% lower mortality from CVD and overall mortality compared with the Australian-born after at least 30 years in Australia. This has been called a 'morbidity mortality paradox' or 'Greek-migrant paradox'. Retrospective data from elderly Greek migrants participating in the International Union of Nutrition Sciences Food Habits in Later Life (FHILL) study suggests that diets changed on migration due to the: (i) lack of familiar foods in the new environment; (ii) abundant and cheap animal foods (iii) memories of hunger before migration; and (iv) status ascribed to energy dense foods (animal foods, white bread and sweets) and 'plumpness' as a sign of affluence and plant foods (legumes, vegetable dishes, grainy bread) and 'thinness' as a sign of poverty. This apparently resulted in traditional foods (e.g. olive oil) being replaced with 'new' foods (e.g. butter), 'traditional' plant dishes being made more energy dense, larger serves of animal foods, sweets and fats being consumed, and increased frequency of celebratory feasts. This shift in food pattern contributed to significant weight gain in GA. Despite these potentially adverse changes, data from Greece in the 1960s (seven countries study) and from Australia in the 1990s (FHILL study) has shown that Greek migrants have continued to eat large serves of putatively protective foods (leafy vegetables, onions, garlic, tomatoes, capsicum, lemon juice, herbs, legumes, fish) prepared according to Greek cuisine (e.g. vegetables stewed in oil). Furthermore, GA were found to return to the traditional Greek food pattern with advancing years.     Pain is sensed, transmitted, and modified by a variety of mediators and receptors. Histamine is a well-known mediator of pain. In addition to their anti-histaminic effects, the classical, or 1st generation, anti-histamines (1st AHs) possess, to various degrees, anti-muscarinic, anti-serotonergic, anti-adrenergic, and other pharmacologic effects. Although there have been attempts to use 1st AHs as analgesics and/or analgesic adjuvants, the advent of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) discouraged such trials. We previously reported that in patients with temporomandibular disorders, osteoporosis, and/or osteoarthritis, the analgesic effects of certain 1st AHs (chlorpheniramine and diphenhydramine) are superior to those of the NSAIDs flurbiprofen and indomethacin. Here, we compared analgesic effects among 1st AHs and NSAIDs against responses shown by mice to intraperitoneally injected 0.7% acetic acid. Since 1st AHs are water soluble, we selected water-soluble NSAIDs. For direct comparison, drugs were intravenously injected 30 min before the above tests. Histamine-H1-receptor-deficient (H1R-KO) mice were used for evaluating H1-receptor-independent effects. The tested 1st AHs (especially cyproheptadine) displayed or tended to display analgesic effects comparable to those of NSAIDs in normal and H1R-KO mice. Our data suggest that the anti-serotonergic and/or anti-adrenergic effects of 1st AHs make important contributions to their analgesic effects. Moreover, combination of a 1st AH with an NSAID (cyclooxygenase-1 inhibitor) produced remarkably potent analgesic effects. We propose that a 1st AH, by itself or in combination with a cyclooxygenase-1 inhibitor, should undergo testing to evaluate its usefulness in analgesia. PMID:27040636

  18. Comparison of FSE and EPI with brain MR imaging

    To compare the usefulness of echo-planar imaging(EPI) and fast spin-echo(FSE) in routine brain MR imaging. Twenty-five patients with various intracranial diseases were prospectively examined with T2-weighted MR imaging on a 1.5T unit using FSE, spin echo single-shot EPI(SS-EPI) and multi-shot EPI(MS-EPI) techniques. For qualitative assessment, overall image quality, discrimination between cortical gray-white matter and between basal ganglia-white matter, lesion conspicuity, image distortion and artifacts(motion, ghost, flow, and susceptibility) were all evaluated using a subjective scoring system ranging from 1 to 4 (1 for the worst and 4 for the best). For quantitative assessment, contrast and contrast-to-noise ratio(CNR) were calculated for cortical gray-white matter, basal ganglia-white matter, and lesion-white matter. Overall image quality, discrimination between cortical gray-white matter, basal ganglia-white matter, and lesion-white matter, lesion conspicuity, image distortion and susceptibility artifacts showed the highest value in FSE and the lowest in SS-EPI. Motion artifacts were seen only in FSE, while flow and ghost artifacts were most commonly seen in SS-EPI. Contrast and CNR of anatomical and pathologic structures showed the highest value in FSE, especially for cortical gray-white matter and basal ganglia-white matter. With regard to overall image quality, image distortion, susceptibility artifacts, contrast and CNR, EPI is far inferior to FSE.     It is found that the incorporation of Nitrite Corrosion Inhibitor (NCI) greatly weakens the resistance of mixtures to sulfate attack.To study the mechanism of this phenomenon,in this paper,the influence of NCI additionon on the cement paste and microstructure change of high performance concrete specimens is studied by means of quantitative XRD,SEM tests.The results demonstrate that the incorporation of NCI accelerates the formation of calcium hydroxide and ettringite crystals,and weakens the pore refinement effect caused by the secondary hydration reaction of fly ash and microsilica.At the age up to one year,the relative crystal quantity in mixture containing NCI is always higher than that in control mixture.The reasons for the degradation in sulfate resisitance of mixtures may be attributed to the increase and stability of the calcium hydroxide and ettringite crystals formed and the weakening of secondary hydration reaction.Based on the results,conclusion can be drawn that NCI should be used cautiously in practical engineering where high resistance to sulfate attack is required.

    Auditing biomedical terminologies often results in the identification of inconsistencies and thus helps to improve their quality. In this paper, we present a method based on Semantic Web technologies for auditing biomedical terminologies and apply it to the NCI thesaurus. We stored the NCI thesaurus concepts and their properties in an RDF triple store. By querying this store, we assessed the consistency of both hierarchical and associative relations from the NCI thesaurus among themselves and with corresponding relations in the UMLS Semantic Network. We show that the consistency is better for associative relations than for hierarchical relations.     In conclusion, we synthesized 7,8-epi-valtrate (6) from (+)-genipin (8). Although final product 6 has the opposite stereochemistry at C-7 and 8 compared to natural valtrate (5), this is the first synthesis of a diene-type valepotriate epimeric structure by an efficient synthetic pathway. We screened the compounds for proliferation inhibition of various cancer cell lines and HUVEC and discovered 7,8-epi-valtrate (6) and its synthetic intermediates showed strong inhibitory activity; these results will be published elsewhere.

  2. Ultrafast MR imaging with EPI of organs undergoing nonperiodic motion

    Conventional MR imaging employing repetitive data acquisition is susceptible to motion artifacts. Gating overcomes periodic motion effects. Nonperiodic motion, as encountered in the gastronintestinal tract, cardiac arrhythmias, unsedated children, and fetal imaging, thwarts conventional MR imaging. The EPI derivatives BEST and MBEST create a complex 128 x 128-pixel image in 64 msec and 128 msec, respectively, freezing motion almost completely. Sequentially recorded gastrointestinal-tract images allow quantitative evaluation of gastric and gut motility. Cardiac morphology, movement, and blood flow patterns in valvular heart disease have been depicted during atrial fibrillation.     This year, NCI was re-accredited as one of nearly 200 CEO Cancer Gold Standard employers across the United States.     Through data exchanging with China, Russia and Japan, KIGAM could monitor North Korea explosion tests in near real time with azimuthal full coverage from the test site. Except for the East Sea (Japan Sea) side, the seismic stations are distributed uniformly along the boundaries of North Korea and adjacent countries, and only stations with the distance of 200 to 550 Km from the test site were considered. Irrespective of azimuthal directions of stations from the test site, the conventional discrimination, Pn/Lg spectral ratio clearly showed that both tests were explosion. But mb-Ms discrimination did not show apparently the known pattern of explosion for both tests. Body wave magnitude, mb(Pn) of 2nd test, which was evaluated as 4.5 by KIGAM, varies with directional location of stations widely from 4.1 to 5.2. The magnitude obtained from Lg, mb(Lg), showed narrow variation between 4.3 to 4.7 with the average of 4.5. In the case of 1st test, both mb(Pn) and mb(Lg) showed equivalently large variation with directional station location. The error ellipses of epicentral determination of test site for 1st and 2nd tests showed almost identical pattern if they were separately calculated with the same configuration of stations. But the combined use of 1st and 2nd test data showed that 2nd test site was moved approximately 2 Km westward from 1st site. The cut-off frequencies of P wave of 1st and 2nd tests showed no or negligible difference even though the estimated yield of 2nd test were much larger than that of 1st one. The ratio of 1st and 2nd P-wave amplitudes showed from 2 to 3.1 times. Correspondingly the estimated energy or yield were ranged from 4 to roughly 10 times. KIGAM evaluated the yield of 2nd test were 8 times in the average larger than that of 1st one.

    Full Text Available The NCI-60 cell line collection is a very widely used panel for the study of cellular mechanisms of cancer in general and in vitro drug action in particular. It is a model system for the tissue types and genetic diversity of human cancers and has been extensively molecularly characterized. Here, we present a quantitative proteome and kinome profile of the NCI-60 panel covering, in total, 10,350 proteins (including 375 protein kinases and including a core cancer proteome of 5,578 proteins that were consistently quantified across all tissue types. Bioinformatic analysis revealed strong cell line clusters according to tissue type and disclosed hundreds of differentially regulated proteins representing potential biomarkers for numerous tumor properties. Integration with public transcriptome data showed considerable similarity between mRNA and protein expression. Modeling of proteome and drug-response profiles for 108 FDA-approved drugs identified known and potential protein markers for drug sensitivity and resistance.     Modern life sciences are becoming increasingly data intensive, posing a significant challenge for most researchers and shifting the bottleneck of scientific discovery from data generation to data analysis. As a result, progress in genome research is increasingly impeded by bioinformatic hurdles. A new generation of powerful and easy-to-use genome analysis tools has been developed to address this issue, enabling biologists to perform complex bioinformatic analyses online - without having to learn a programming language or downloading and manually processing large datasets. In this tutorial paper, we describe the use of EpiGRAPH (http://epigraph.mpi-inf.mpg.de/) and Galaxy (http://galaxyproject.org/) for genome and epigenome analysis, and we illustrate how these two web services work together to identify epigenetic modifications that are characteristics of highly polymorphic (SNP-rich) promoters.     Epidemiology relies on data but the divergent ways data are recorded and transferred, both within and between outbreaks, and the expanding range of data-types are creating an increasingly complex problem for the discipline. There is a need for a consistent, interpretable and precise way to transfer data while maintaining its fidelity. We introduce 'EpiJSON', a new, flexible, and standards-compliant format for the interchange of epidemiological data using JavaScript Object Notation. This format is designed to enable the widest range of epidemiological data to be unambiguously held and transferred between people, software and institutions. In this paper, we provide a full description of the format and a discussion of the design decisions made. We introduce a schema enabling automatic checks of the validity of data stored as EpiJSON, which can serve as a basis for the development of additional tools. In addition, we also present the R package 'repijson' which provides conversion tools between this format, line-list data and pre-existing analysis tools. An example is given to illustrate how EpiJSON can be used to store line list data. EpiJSON, designed around modern standards for interchange of information on the internet, is simple to implement, read and check. As such, it provides an ideal new standard for epidemiological, and other, data transfer to the fast-growing open-source platform for the analysis of disease outbreaks. PMID:27266846

    Routine evaluation of the role of copper (Cu) in the growth of various mutants of the yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae disclosed an unexpected effect of Cu on the fermentative first-log growth. The authors subsequent studies are attempting to ascertain the nature and significance of this observation. Cells are grown on glucose in a supplemented minimal media at 29/sup 0/C for 48-72 hrs. using New Brunswick incubator shaking at 200 rpm. Cu concentration was varied by addition of Cu salts or bathocuproine disulfonate (BC), a highly specific Cu chelator. Samples were removed periodically from flasks and dry weights were determined. Growth curve plots of normal yeasts grown in the presence of 1mM to 38mM Cu showed little variation in the expected 1st log; diauxi; 2nd log; stationary phase picture. However, in the presence of BC growth rate in the 1st log was significantly slowed and as expected 2nd log growth was essentially stopped. The low 1st log growth rate could be titrated to normal (+Cu) levels by increments of added Cu but not by added iron. The effect was not seen when Rho-minus strains were used nor when growth was followed under anaerobic conditions. Results to date implicate a mitochondrial protein, oxygen and copper in the 1st log growth of S Cerevisiae. The character of the protein agent and the possible contribution of cytochrome oxidase activity to the lst log growth are being evaluated.

    Through data exchanging with China, Russia and Japan, KIGAM could monitor North Korea explosion tests in near real time with azimuthally full coverage from the test site. Except for the East Sea (Japan Sea) side, the seismic stations are distributed uniformly along the boundaries of North Korea and adjacent countries. The error ellipses of epicentral determination of test site for 1st and 2nd tests showed almost identical pattern if they were separately calculated with the same configuration of stations. But the combined use of the 1st and the 2nd test data showed that the 2nd test site was moved approximately 2 Km westward from 1st site. The Pn/Lg spectral ratio clearly discriminate these events from two nearby natural earthquakes above 4 Hz. Full moment tensor inversion also indicate the 2nd test had a very large isotropic component. But mb-Ms discrimination, which has been considered one of the most reliable discriminants for separating explosions and earthquakes, did not show apparently the known pattern of explosion for both tests. Body wave magnitude, mb(Pn) of the 2nd test, which was evaluated as 4.5 by KIGAM, varies with directional location of stations widely from 4.1 to 5.2. The magnitude obtained from Lg, mb(Lg), showed narrow variation between 4.3 to 4.7 with the average of 4.5. In the case of both 1st and 2nd tests, both mb(Pn) and mb(Lg) showed equivalently large variation with directional station location. These variations are mainly due to lateral variation of crustal structures surrounding the test site. Remarkably mb(Lg) showed very linear relationship with mb(Pn). By considering attenuation characteristics according to the propagation path, the variations could be effectively reduced. The cut-off frequencies of P wave of both tests showed no or negligible difference even though the estimated yield of the 2nd test were much larger than that of the 1st one.     Isoprostanes are products of free radical-catalyzed peroxidation and 8-epi-prostaglandin (PG) F2 alpha is the most important vasomodulator of this group of compounds. In human lower leg lymphatics isolated from 5 different patients without a smoking history or hyperlipidemia, 8-epi-PGF2 alpha stimulated in vitro contraction more strongly than the thromboxane receptor agonist U46619. Other isoprostanes (8-epi-PGE1, 8-epi-PGE2) had only limited lymphatic contractile potency.   11. fMRI of the motor speech center using EPI

    The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of functional MR imaging (fMRI) using the echo planar imaging (EPI) technique to map the motor speech center and to provide the basic data for motor speech fMRI during internal word generations. This study involved ten young, healthy, right-handed volunteers (M:F=8:2; age: 21-27); a 1.5T whole body scanner with multislice EPI was used. Brain activation was mapped using gradient echo single shot EPI (TR/TE of 3000/40, slice numbers 6, slice thicknesses mm, no interslice gap, matrix numbers 128 x 128, and FOV 30 x 30). The paradigm consisted of a series of alternating rest and activation tasks, repeated eight times. During the rest task, each of ten Korean nouns composed of two to four syllables was shown continuously every 3 seconds. The subjects were required to see the words but not to generate speech, whereas during the activation task, they were asked to internally generate as many words as possible from each of ten non-concrete one-syllabled Korean letters shown on the screen every 3 seconds. During an eight-minute period, a total of 960 axial images were acquired in each subject. Data were analyzed using the Z-score (p<0.05), and following color processing, the activated signals were overlapped on T1-weighted images. The location of the activated area, mean activated signal intensity were evaluated. The results of this study indicate that in most subjects, fMRI using EPI can effectively map the motor speech center. The data obtained may be useful for the clinical application of fMRI.   18. Fast Susceptibility-Weighted Imaging (SWI) with 3D Short-Axis Propeller (SAP)-EPI

    Purpose Susceptibility-Weighted Imaging (SWI) in neuroimaging can be challenging due to long scan times of 3D Gradient Recalled Echo (GRE), while faster techniques such as 3D interleaved EPI (iEPI) are prone to motion artifacts. Here we outline and implement a 3D Short-Axis Propeller Echo-Planar Imaging (SAP-EPI) trajectory as a faster, motion-correctable approach for SWI. Methods Experiments were conducted on a 3T MRI system. 3D SAP-EPI, 3D iEPI, and 3D GRE SWI scans were acquired on two volunteers. Controlled motion experiments were conducted to test the motion-correction capability of 3D SAP-EPI. 3D SAP-EPI SWI data were acquired on two pediatric patients as a potential alternative to 2D GRE used clinically. Results 3D GRE images had a better target resolution (0.47 × 0.94 × 2mm, scan time = 5min), iEPI and SAP-EPI images (resolution = 0.94 × 0.94 × 2mm) were acquired in a faster scan time (1:52min) with twice the brain coverage. SAP-EPI showed motion-correction capability and some immunity to undersampling from rejected data. Conclusion While 3D SAP-EPI suffers from some geometric distortion, its short scan time and motion-correction capability suggest that SAP-EPI may be a useful alternative to GRE and iEPI for use in SWI, particularly in uncooperative patients.     Readout mosaic segmentation has been suggested as an alternative approach to EPI for high resolution diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). In the readout-segmented EPI (RS-EPI) scheme, segments of k-space are acquired along the readout direction. This reduces geometric distortions due to the decrease in readout time. In this work, further distortion reduction is achieved by combining RS-EPI with parallel imaging (PI). The performance of the PI-accelerated RS-EPI scheme is assessed in volunteers and patients at 3T with respect to both standard EPI and PI-accelerated EPI. Peripherally cardiac gated and non-gated RS-EPI images are acquired to assess whether motion due to brain pulsation significantly degrades the image quality. Due to the low off-resonance of PI-driven RS-EPI, we also investigate if the eddy currents induced by the diffusion gradients are low enough to use the Stejskal-Tanner diffusion preparation instead of the twice-refocused eddy-current compensated diffusion preparation to reduce TE. It is shown that non-gated phase corrected DWI performs equally as well as gated acquisitions. PI-driven DW RS-EPI images with substantially less distortion compared with single-shot EPI are shown in patients-allowing the delineation of structures in the lower parts of the brain. A twice-refocused diffusion preparation was found necessary to avoid blurring in the DWI data.   1. Softball Games Bring NCI and Leidos Biomed Employees Together | Poster

    NCI and Leidos Biomed employees took to the fields at Nallin Pond for the third annual slow-pitch softball games on August 26. The series attracted 54 employees who were divided into four teams, Red, Blue, Gray, and White, and they were cheered on by about 40 enthusiastic spectators. In the first set of games, the Gray team defeated the Blue team, 15–8, and the White team pulled out a win against the Red team, 17–15. After a brief rest, the two winning teams and the two losing teams faced each other in a second set of games. On Field 1, the “winners” match-up of the Gray and White teams was a nail biter, with a close score throughout the game. Daylight was a factor, however, and the team captains decided to call the game for safety reasons. With a lead of 15 to 13, the Gray team was declared the overall winner.

Objectives: The aim was to understand perceptions of 1 st year medical students regarding career choices and the specialty of psychiatry through a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study. Materials and Methods: Perceptions of 137 1 st year medical students from the Government Medical College were recorded using a semi-structured questionnaire. Students provided their opinions about future career choices; perspective of these specialties in terms of financial reward, reputation, work-life balance, challenging aspect, ability to help patients effectively and emotional stability; their preferences in life and interaction with psychiatrist and its impact. Statistical Analysis Used: One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA with post-hoc analysis by Tukey-Kramer test. Results: Surgery was a high priority for 69 (50% while psychiatry was a high priority only for 11 (8%. Surgery was highest for financial reward and reputation, but lowest for work-life balance. Psychiatry had higher emotional stability, however, its the reputation was lower than surgery, medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology and paediatrics. Students preferred reputation (41% over social service opportunities (43%, work-life balance (16%, and high-income (11%. Interaction with psychiatrist increased inclination for psychiatry in 69% (9/13 students. Conclusions: Psychiatry is not a preferred specialty among 1 st year medical students due to its poor reputation.

    The NA34 (HELIOS) calorimeter has measured e/{pi} {congruent} 1.1 in a uranium/liquid argon calorimeter with a shaping time of 135 nsec. Lead may be a viable alternative, but e/{pi} must first be measured at fast shaping times in lead. We re preparing to measure e/{pi} at momenta ranging from 0.5 to 20 GeV/c and with shaping times of 50, 100 and 150 nsec.

The Internet has provided tertiary education with the opportunity to develop innovative learning environments. The teaching and learning of practical skills has gained a new dimension with the emergence of remote laboratories. The rapidly growing number of remote laboratories (RL worldwide is the evidence that the educational community has recognized their potential to develop into a creative, flexible, engaging, and student-cantered learning environment. Even a brief review of the existing RLs shows a large diversity in their structure, design and implementation. However, not many researchers disclose how their RLs are integrated within their curricula. Therefore, an important question still remains to be answered: how to optimize the design of RLs and their integration in a course curriculum for the best learning outcomes? This problem is particularly important when RLs are used in teaching 1st year students who have limited technical knowledge and practical experience in using real equipment. In this paper we would like to share our experiences with NetLab, an RL developed at the University of South Australia (UniSA for teaching 1st year engineering students and make recommendations for improvements in teaching practices based on it.

  10. Dipolar interactions and hydrogen bonding in supramolecular aggregates: understanding cooperative phenomena for 1st hyperpolarizability.

    Weak intermolecular forces like dipolar interactions and hydrogen-bonding lead to a variety of different packing arrangements of molecules in crystals and self-assemblies. Such differences in the arrangements change the extent of excitonic splitting and excitation spectra in the multichromophore aggregates. In this tutorial review, the role of such interactions in fine tuning the linear and 1st non-linear optical (NLO) responses in molecular aggregates are discussed. The non-additivity of these optical properties arise specifically due to such cooperative interactions. Calculations performed on dimers, trimers and higher aggregates for model systems provide insights into the interaction mechanisms and strategies to enhance the 1st hyperpolarizabilities of pi-conjugated molecular assemblies. Flexible dipole orientations in the alkane bridged chromophores show odd-even variations in their second-harmonic responses that are explained through their dipolar interactions in different conformations. Parameters for the optical applications of molecules arranged in constrained geometry, like in Calix[n]arene, have been elucidated.     目的 观察角膜上皮下雾状混浊(haze)形成过程中转化生长因子β2(transforming growth factor β2,TGF-β2)在兔机械法准分子激光上皮瓣下角膜磨镶术(epipolis laser in situ keratomileusis,Epi-LASIK)和去瓣Epi-LASIK术后的表达差异,并探讨上皮瓣弃留对Epi-LASIK术后haze形成的影响.方法24只新西兰白兔,双眼分别建立Epi-LASIK和去瓣Epi-LASIK模型.裂隙灯显微镜下观察术后1个月、2个月、3个月角膜haze的情况,免疫组织化学SABC法检测角膜组织TGF-β2的表达.结果Epi-LASIK组和去瓣Epi-LASIK组haze分级情况在术后1个月、2个月、3个月差异均无统计学意义(x2 =0.08、0.58、0.25,均为P>0.05).Epi-LASIK组术后1个月、2个月、3个月TGF-β2的表达分别为8 546.42 ±2013.25、7831.62±1560.27、6253.21±1962.35,去瓣Epi-LASIK组术后1个月、2个月、3个月1GF-β2的表达分别为8037.21±1634.29、6994.56±2013.58、6042.58±1862.24,2组术后各时间点角膜组织TGF-β2的表达差异均无统计学意义(t=0.96、1.31、0.38,均为P>0.05);组内比较,随时间延长,TGF-β2的表达呈逐渐降低的趋势.结论 上皮瓣弃留对Epi-LASIK术后各时间点角膜组织TGF-β2的表达及haze发生程度均无明显影响.%Objective To observe the expression of transforming growth factor β2(TGF-β2) after epipolis laser in situ keratomileusis (Epi-LASIK) and flap-free Epi-LASIK on rabbit during the process of haze forming,and discuss the difference between Epi-LASIK and flap-free Epi-LASIK effect on haze forming after the operation.     Full Text Available TITLE: A patient study of Stromal Reaction after C3R with OCT and comparing Epi-On & Epi-Off techniques in Keratoconus patients. PURPOSE: To report a study of 20 patients of keratoconus showing the effect on the corneal structure and stromal reaction in post Corneal Collagen Cross Linking (C3R, through the Anterior Segment imaging technique- OCT METHODS: A Study was done from 15.7.2014 to 30.9.2014 of 20 patients having keratoconus, progressive type, where Collagen Cross linking was decided as the method of management (10 each of Epi-on and Epi-off technique. In the Epi-off technique, the epithelium was removed prior to corneal soakage of a dextran-based 0.1% photo sensitizer riboflavin solution for 30 minutes, followed by exposure of ultraviolet-A (typically 365-370 μm light for 30 min with an intensity of 3 mW/cm 2 and 5.4 J/cm 2 of energy. In the Epi-on technique, a special dextran-trometamol EDTA based 0.1% riboflavin solution is used without scrapping the cornea, rest of the method is same. One week after the C3R procedure, the anterior segment OCT was done. RESULTS: In the first few weeks after cross-linking, a faint hyper reflectivity is noted in the anterior stroma, a distinct demarcation between the cross-linked and non-cross-linked areas of the cornea, the depth of demarcation line and the change in the corneal thickness was noted. CONCLUSION: In both the Epi-on and Epi-off technique, the change in the stromal thickness and demarcation line is same. Hence we conclude that both the techniques are equally effective.

    Multispectral tissue imaging based on optical cameras and continuous-wave tissue illumination is commonly used in medicine and biology. Surprisingly, there is a characteristic absence of a critical look at the quantities that can be uniquely characterized from optically diffuse matter by multispectral imaging. Here, we investigate the fundamental question of uniqueness in epi-illumination measurements from turbid media obtained at multiple wavelengths. By utilizing an analytical model, tissue-mimicking phantoms, and an in vivo imaging experiment we show that independent of the bands employed, spectral measurements cannot uniquely retrieve absorption and scattering coefficients. We also establish that it is, nevertheless, possible to uniquely quantify oxygen saturation and the Mie scattering power-a previously undocumented uniqueness condition. PMID:27367111

The 1st International Conference on Nanomanufacturing (NanoMan2008) was held on the 13-16 July 2008 in Singapore in conjunction with ThinFilm2008 (The 4th International Conference on Technological Advances of Thin Films & Surface Coatings). Approximately 140 delegates from all over the world have participated in the conference and presented their latest discoveries and technological developments. The main focuses of the conference were modern nanomanufacturing by laser machining, focused ion beam fabrication, nano/micro-molding/imprinting, nanomaterial synthesis and characterization, nanometrology and nano/microsystems fabrication and characterization.     Galactic interstellar emission contributes substantially to Fermi LAT observations in the Galactic plane, the location of the majority of supernova remnants (SNRs). To explore some systematic effects on SNRs' properties caused by interstellar emission modeling, we have developed a method comparing the official LAT interstellar emission model results to eight alternative models. We created the eight alternative Galactic interstellar models by varying a few input parameters to GALPROP, namely the height of the cosmic ray propagation halo, cosmic ray source distribution in the Galaxy, and atomic hydrogen spin temperature. We have analyzed eight representative SNRs chosen to encompass a range of Galactic locations, extensions, and spectral properties using the eight different interstellar emission models. We will present the results and method in detail and discuss the implications for studies such as the 1st Fermi LAT SNR Catalog.

    In the Power Reator and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation (PNC), plans are in progress for the completion of a pilot plant for the glass solidification of liquid-wastes in fiscal 1987, intended for the high-level liquid wastes from the fuel reprocessing plant of PNC. The mock-up test facility for this pilot plant is for grasping the operating characteristics of the process and the development of the remote operation and maintenance techniques. The test facility is composed of the stages of liquid waste pretreatment, glass material feed, glass melting, off-gas treatment, canister handling, and secondary-waste treatment.   1. Implementation and Application of PSF-Based EPI Distortion Correction to High Field Animal Imaging

    Full Text Available The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the functionality and performance of a PSF-based geometric distortion correction for high-field functional animal EPI. The EPI method was extended to measure the PSF and a postprocessing chain was implemented in Matlab for offline distortion correction. The correction procedure was applied to phantom and in vivo imaging of mice and rats at 9.4T using different SE-EPI and DWI-EPI protocols. Results show the significant improvement in image quality for single- and multishot EPI. Using a reduced FOV in the PSF encoding direction clearly reduced the acquisition time for PSF data by an acceleration factor of 2 or 4, without affecting the correction quality.

  2. SBK与Epi-LASIK治疗高度近视疗效比较%Comparison of the effect of SBK and Epi-LASIK on correcting high myopia

    Objective To evaluate the efficacy of sub-Bowman keratomileusis (SBK) and epipolis laser in situ keratomileusis (Epi-LASIK) for correcting high myopia. Methods Ninety-one patients (182 eyes) underwent SBK or Epi-LASIK surgery for correcting high myopia,including 53 patients (106 eyes) for SBK and 38 patients (76 eyes) for Epi-LASIK.Visual acuity,remained diopter and corneal haze were examined after operation.The results were analyzed statistically. Results Patients had different degree of uncomfortable feeling early time after Epi-LASIK.Both groups showed no keratectasia by corneal topography examination 6 months after operation.One week postoperatively,the proportion of visual acuity ≥0.8 for SBK (77.4%) was more than that for Epi-LASIK (46.1%) (P < 0.05).No significant differences were found in that of SBK (92.5%,95.3%,94.3%)and that of Epi-LASIK (85.5%,94.7%,90.8%) one-month,three-months and six-months postoperatively (P > 0.05).The recovery of visual acuity after SBK was quicker than Epi-LASIK.There was no statistic meaning of remained diopter between SBK [(-0.24±0.42)D,(-0.38±0.51)D,(-0.40±0.46)D]and Epi-LASIK [(-0.32±0.40)D,(-0.44±0.60)D,(-0.52±0.55)D] 1 month,3 months and 6 months postoperatively (P > 0.05).Both groups showed no refractive regression after operation.Haze was not found in SBK group.0.5 degree of haze was found in 2 eyes after Epi-LASIK 3 months postoperatively,and was disappeared 6 months postoperatively.     Objective: To take advantage of Epi Info to manage and analyze disease data. Methods: After selecting the living examples for independent sample T-Test, Epi Info 5.00, 5.01a(Chinese), 6.00, 6.04 b, 6.04 d, 2000, 2002(Chinese)were used to do the independent sample T-Test on the two living examples. Then, Intercooled Stata7, Microsoft Excel(2002) and SPSS 10.0 for Windows were used to verify the results. Results: The statistical results from the Epi Info 5.00, 5.01a(Chinese) and 6.00 were the same while that from Epi Info 6.04 b, 6.04 d, 2000,2002 (Chinese), Intercooled Stata7, Microsoft Excel(2002) and SPSS 10.0 for Windows were identical In independent sample T-Test,. But the former result is different with the latter. Conclusion: There was an error in the result of T-Test from Epi Info 6.00 and former versions. Thus, it's important to be alert to select the versions of Epi Info to manage and analyze disease data. On the other hand, it's also quite pivotal to distinguish the adopted Epi Info versions when referring to the articles ane use the statistical results.

  4. Advanced Epi Tools for Gallium Nitride Light Emitting Diode Devices

    Over the course of this program, Applied Materials, Inc., with generous support from the United States Department of Energy, developed a world-class three chamber III-Nitride epi cluster tool for low-cost, high volume GaN growth for the solid state lighting industry. One of the major achievements of the program was to design, build, and demonstrate the world’s largest wafer capacity HVPE chamber suitable for repeatable high volume III-Nitride template and device manufacturing. Applied Materials’ experience in developing deposition chambers for the silicon chip industry over many decades resulted in many orders of magnitude reductions in the price of transistors. That experience and understanding was used in developing this GaN epi deposition tool. The multi-chamber approach, which continues to be unique in the ability of the each chamber to deposit a section of the full device structure, unlike other cluster tools, allows for extreme flexibility in the manufacturing process. This robust architecture is suitable for not just the LED industry, but GaN power devices as well, both horizontal and vertical designs. The new HVPE technology developed allows GaN to be grown at a rate unheard of with MOCVD, up to 20x the typical MOCVD rates of 3{micro}m per hour, with bulk crystal quality better than the highest-quality commercial GaN films grown by MOCVD at a much cheaper overall cost. This is a unique development as the HVPE process has been known for decades, but never successfully commercially developed for high volume manufacturing. This research shows the potential of the first commercial-grade HVPE chamber, an elusive goal for III-V researchers and those wanting to capitalize on the promise of HVPE.     The aim of the 1st European Conference on Gas Micro Flows is to advance research in Europe and worldwide in the field of gas micro flows as well as to improve global fundamental knowledge and to enable technological applications. Gas flows in microsystems are of great importance and touch almost every industrial field (e.g. fluidic microactuators for active control of aerodynamic flows, vacuum generators for extracting biological samples, mass flow and temperature micro-sensors, pressure gauges, micro heat-exchangers for the cooling of electronic components or for chemical applications, and micro gas analyzers or separators). The main characteristic of gas microflows is their rarefaction, which for device design often requires modelling and simulation both by continuous and molecular approaches. In such flows various non-equilibrium transport phenomena appear, while the role played by the interaction between the gas and the solid device surfaces becomes essential. The proposed models of boundary conditions often need an empirical adjustment strongly dependent on the micro manufacturing technique. The 1st European Conference on Gas Micro Flows is organized under the umbrella of the recently established GASMEMS network (www.gasmems.eu/) consisting of 13 participants and six associate members. The main objectives of the network are to structure research and train researchers in the fields of micro gas dynamics, measurement techniques for gaseous flows in micro experimental setups, microstructure design and micro manufacturing with applications in lab and industry. The conference takes place on June 6-8 2012, at the Skiathos Palace Hotel, on the beautiful island of Skiathos, Greece.   6. The use of electron beams in radiotherapy: 1st e-learning course in Latin America

    Full text: Radiotherapy in Brazil has now about 80 linear accelerators with electron beams. Due to the continental dimensions of the country, training of medical physicists is still a problem, because many of these physicists are far from the main training centers (Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo) and cannot afford to spend any time there. In other cases, they cannot leave the work since there are not enough physicists at their hospital. Then, the Quality Assurance Programme of the National Cancer Institute, whose mission is to improve the quality of the radiotherapeutic treatments in Brazil, decided to create its 1st e-learning course to help the medical physicists perform a correct electron beam dosimetry, according to the IAEA TRS-398 and quality control tests based on the IAEA-TECDOC-1151. The course had the collaboration of the Public Health National School (Fiocruz) and covers the following subjects: 1) therapeutic linear accelerator electron beams: history, production and clinical application, 2) dosimetric equipment and calibration methods, 3) quality control. It is a 60 hour course, totally at a distance and pedagogically based on the basic principle of constructivism. It is the 1st course on the subject and under this model in Brazil and all Latin America. The students receive a high quality book and CD-ROM (with all the material of the course, including four films with the dosimetric measurements in practice). They also count on full time tutors specially trained in a virtual environment, through which they can communicate with the tutors and among themselves, access a virtual library and participate in special forums. By the end of each subject of the course, the students have to answer questions or perform measurements, which are evaluated by the tutors (receiving specific degrees). The course has been announced during only two weeks. We received 161 registrations. Five times more than anticipated. We selected 81 candidates that have been divided in four

  8. Some Yields in the Thermal- and Epi-Cadmium-Neutron Fission of Pu239

    The yields of several nuclides in the thermal- and epi-cadmium-neutron fission of Pu239 have been measured and are reported. In epi-cadmium-neutron fission a decrease, relative to thermal fission, in the yields of Ag111 and Ag113, i.e. an increased peak-to-valley ratio, was found. The yield of As77 and As78, which represent, highly unsymmetrical fission, were found to be greater in epi-cadmium-neutron fission than in thermal fission. This result is' shown to be inconsistent with the simple two mode of fission hypothesis. (author)

    Junenol based-eudesmanolides have been detected in many compositae plant species and were reported to exhibit various pharmacological activities. So far, the gene encoding junenol synthase has never been isolated. Here we report the molecular cloning and functional analysis of a 10-epi-junenol synthase from Inula hupehensis (designated IhsTPS1). IhsTPS1 converts the substrate farnesyl diphosphate into multiple sesquiterpenes with the product 10-epi-junenol being predominant. The transcript levels of IhsTPS1 correlate well with the accumulation pattern of 10-epi-junenol in I. hupehensis organs, supporting its biochemical roles in vivo. PMID:27231873

    A report of the POPIN, (International Population Information Network), Advisory Committee on its 1st session. The chairman presented a progress report on the activities of the Network in general and the POPIN coordinating unit in particular. More active participation by the developing countries was stressed to share information. The working group reported the efforts made by various groups for the translation of the population multilingual thesaurus into other languages. It also reviewed the draft manuscript on inventory and evaluation of training materials to identify gaps and make suggestions for improvement. The advisory committee suggested the development of a series of shorter guides which would deal with specific subjects. The development of a common classification scheme was considered of utmost importance since it would facilitate the processing, retrieval and exchange of information. A proposed work plan for 1983 and 1984 was discussed. This included publication of the POPIN Bulletin and newsletter, preparation of documentations for the sessions of the Advisory Committee, publication of the specific guides and a directory of POPIN members. Recommendations of the committee included measures for expansion of membership, publication of Popline multilingual thesaurus and guides for specific subjects. The committee considered and adopted the recommendations. Annexes include, 1) list of participants, documents and agenda, 2) recommendations of the POPIN working group on the management of the population multilingual thesaurus, and 3) recommendations on the inventory and evaluation of teaching materials for population information services.   11. Report of the 1st technical meeting on high temperature gas-cooled reactors

    The 1st Technical Meeting on High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactors (HTGRs) was held on February 1 and 2, 1990 in the Tokai Research Establishment in order to review the results of R and D associated with the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) accumulated so far in the JAERI and to investigate how to promote the further R and D on high temperature engineering and examination. From the point of view for establishing and upgrading the technology basis of HTGRs, the R and D results obtained so far and the present status of R and D were reviewed for the key items in the meeting, and the R and D items to be investigated positively and items of international cooperation to be promoted in future were discussed based on the comments and suggestions offered by the experts outside the JAERI. This report summarizes the papers which were presented on each subject of R and D in the meeting along with the comments and suggestions by the experts outside the JAERI. The results of the meeting will be reflected effectively for promoting the R and D on the high temperature engineering and examination. (author)

  12. A Helmet-type MEG System with 1st order SQUID Gradiometer Located in Vacuum

    We have fabricated a helmet type magnetoencephalogrphy(MEG) with a 1st order gradiometer in vacuum to improve the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) and the boil-off rate of liquid helium(LHe). The axial type first-order gradiometer was fabricated with a double relaxation oscillation SQUID(DROS) sensor which was directly connected with a pickup coil. The neck space of LHe dewar was made to be smaller than that of a conventional dewar, but the LHe boil-off ratio appeared to increase. To reduce the temperature of low Tc SQUID sensor and pickup coil to 9 K, a metal shield made of, such as copper, brass or aluminum, have been usually used for thermal transmission. But the metal shield exhibited high thermal noise and eddy current fluctuation. We quantified the thermal noise and the eddy current fluctuation of metal. In this experiment, we used the bobbin which was made of an alumina to wind Nb superconductive wire for pickup coil and the average noise of coil-in-vacuum type MEG system was 3.5 fT/Hz1/2. Finally, we measured the auditory evoked signal to prove the reliability of coil-in-vacuum type MEG system.

    The U.S. marine energy industry is actively pursuing development of offshore wind and marine hydrokinetic (MHK) energy systems. Experience in the wind energy sector demonstrates that new technology development requires thorough measurement and characterization of the environmental conditions prevalent at installation sites and of technology operating in the field. Presently, there are no turn-key instrumentation system solutions that meet the measurement needs of the marine energy industry. The 1st Advanced Marine Renewable Energy Instrumentation Experts Workshop brought together technical experts from government laboratories, academia, and industry representatives from marine energy, wind, offshore oil and gas, and instrumentation developers to present and discuss the instrumentation needs of the marine energy industry. The goals of the meeting were to: (1) Share the latest relevant knowledge among technical experts; (2) Review relevant state-of-the-art field measurement technologies and methods; (3) Review lessons learned from recent field deployments; (4) Identify synergies across different industries; (5) Identify gaps between existing and needed instrumentation capabilities; (6) Understand who are the leading experts; (7) Provide a forum where stakeholders from the marine energy industry could provide substantive input in the development of new marine energy field deployable instrumentation packages.

  17. Addressing learning difficulties in Newtons 1st and 3rd Laws through problem based inquiry using Easy Java Simulation

    We develop an Easy Java Simulation (EJS) model for students to visualize Newtons 1st and 3rd laws, using frictionless constant motion equation and a spring collision equation during impact. Using Physics by Inquiry instructional (PbI) strategy, the simulation and its problem based inquiry worksheet aim to enhance learning of these two Newtonian concepts. We report results from Experimental (N=62 students) and Control (N=67) Groups in 11 multiple choice questions pre and post tests, conducted by three teachers in the school. Results suggest, at 95 percent confidence level, significant improvement for concept of Newtons 1st Law while not so for Newtons 3rd Law. A Focus Group Discussion revealed students confirming the usefulness of the EJS model in visualizing the 1st Law while not so much for the 3rd Law. Sixteen flavonoid derivatives, including four new derivatives, were synthesized and evaluated for cytotoxicity against KB and NCI-H187 cell lines. Flavanones 2a-4a demonstrated higher cytotoxic activity than the parent compounds. Cytotoxicity against KB cell line of oxime 1c was about 7 times higher than the ellipticine standard. Interestingly, oximes 1c and 2c exhibited highly potent cytotoxicity against NCI-H187 cell line with IC(50) values of 0.014 and 0.23 microM, respectively. Oximes 4c and 5c showed strong cytotoxicity against NCI-H187 cell line with IC(50) values of 4.04 and 2.32 microM, respectively. PMID:20362442

  1. EpiCollect+: linking smartphones to web applications for complex data collection projects.

    Previously, we have described the development of the generic mobile phone data gathering tool, EpiCollect, and an associated web application, providing two-way communication between multiple data gatherers and a project database. This software only allows data collection on the phone using a single questionnaire form that is tailored to the needs of the user (including a single GPS point and photo per entry), whereas many applications require a more complex structure, allowing users to link a series of forms in a linear or branching hierarchy, along with the addition of any number of media types accessible from smartphones and/or tablet devices (e.g., GPS, photos, videos, sound clips and barcode scanning). A much enhanced version of EpiCollect has been developed (EpiCollect+). The individual data collection forms in EpiCollect+ provide more design complexity than the single form used in EpiCollect, and the software allows the generation of complex data collection projects through the ability to link many forms together in a linear (or branching) hierarchy. Furthermore, EpiCollect+ allows the collection of multiple media types as well as standard text fields, increased data validation and form logic. The entire process of setting up a complex mobile phone data collection project to the specification of a user (project and form definitions) can be undertaken at the EpiCollect+ website using a simple 'drag and drop' procedure, with visualisation of the data gathered using Google Maps and charts at the project website. EpiCollect+ is suitable for situations where multiple users transmit complex data by mobile phone (or other Android devices) to a single project web database and is already being used for a range of field projects, particularly public health projects in sub-Saharan Africa.     Objective: To explore curative effect after microkeratome excimer laser epithelial keratomile -usis (Epi-LASIK) and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for high myopia, and to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Epi-LASIK and LASIK. Methods; Used United States VISX StarS4 laser, and Moria flat push type micro corneal epithelial knife making corneal flap was used for Epi -LASIK, with 0. 02% mitomycin C sponge soaked in. LASIK used Moria rotating type corneal knife making 110 μm corneal flap. The patients was followed up more than 6 months, and compared postoperative symptoms , visual acuity, refraction, and so on. Results; One week postoperative ,the proportion of UCVA≥0. 8 of Epi-LASIK (47. 8% ) was less than LASIK (95.8%) , the difference was statistically significant (x2 =27.056, P = 0.000) ; no statisti-cally significant differences were found in those of Epi-LASIK(95. 7% , 97. 8% , 97. 8%) and LASIK (97. 9% , 97. 9% , 97. 9% ) after 1,3,6 months. After 1 week, the diopter difference was statistically sig-nificant (t = -7. 123 ,P = 0. 000) ; after 1,3,6 months the diopter difference was not statistically signifi -cant. Conclusion; LASIK was still the mainstream of current treatment of myopia . Epi-LASIK was an effective and safe procedure for high myopia.     In this work we present the preliminary results about the performance of an epitaxial (EPI) diode as on-line dosimeter for photon beam radiotherapy. The diode used was processed at University of Hamburg on n-type 75 {mu}m thick epitaxial silicon layer grown on a highly doped n-type 300 {mu}m thick Czochralski (Cz) silicon substrate. The measurements were performed with a diode which not received any type of pre-dose. In order to use this device as a dosimeter, it was enclosed in a black polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) probe. The diode was connected to an electrometer Keithley 6517B in the photovoltaic mode. During all measurements, the diode was held between PMMA plates, placed at 10.0 cm depth and centered in a radiation field of 10 x 10 cm{sup 2}, with the source-to-surface distance (SSD) kept at 100 cm. The short-term repeatability was measured with photon beams of 6 and 18 MV energy by registering five consecutive current signals for the same radiation dose. The current signals induced showed good instantaneous repeatability of the diode, characterized by a smallest coefficient of variation (CV) of 0.21%. Furthermore, the dose-response curves of the diode were quite linear with the highest charge sensitivity achieved of 5.0 {mu}C/Gy. It worth noting that still remains to be investigated the pre-dose influence on epitaxial silicon diode response in radiotherapy photon beam dosimetry, the long term stability and the radiation hardness of these diodes for absorbed doses higher than that investigated in this work.   5. A simple design rule for 1st order form-closure of underactuated hands

    Full Text Available The property of form-closure of a grasp, as generally defined in the literature, is based on the assumption that contact points between the hand and the object are fixed in space. However, this assumption is false when considering a grasp exerted by an underactuated hand, since in this case, it is not possible to control the position of each phalanx independently. In spite of researchers' interest in studying form-closure, none of the available published work on this subject takes into consideration the particular kinematics of underactuated hands. Actually, there are few available tools to qualify or quantify the stability of a grasp exerted by an underactuated hand, thus the design of underactuated hands mostly results from an intuitive approach. This paper aims to reduce this gap.

    A classification of underactuated hands is proposed, based on the expression of contact forces. This highlights the influence of non-backdrivable mechanisms introduced in the transmission of the closing motion of the hand on the stability of the grasp. The way to extend the original definition of form-closure to underactuated grasps is illustrated. A more general definition is formulated, which checks the stability of the set "object + hand". Using this new definition, a simple rule is proposed for designing a hand capable of achieving 1st order form-closed grasps.

    From 29-31 August 2013, the 1st International Conference on Light and Particle Beams in Materials Science, LPBMS 2013, took place in the Tsukuba International Congress Center in the city of Tsukuba, Japan. The conference was a continuation of the international series Synchrotron Radiation in Materials Science (SRMS), which started in 1994. The last one, SRMS-7, was held in Oxford UK 11-14 July 2010, where the International Advisory Committee (IAC) recommended the conference be enlarged to incorporate Materials Research from Neutron, Muon, and Slow Positron Sources, as well as the science emerging from Synchrotron Light Sources. The conference brought together contributions from academics and industrial researchers with a diverse background and experience from the physics, chemistry and engineering communities. The topics covered in the LPBMS2013 include strongly correlated electron systems, magnetism and magnetic materials, soft matter, interface and surface defects, catalysts, biomaterials, and ceramics. In the 3-day scientific program, the conference consisted of 9 plenary talks, 33 invited talks, 20 oral presentations, and 126 poster presentations. We are pleased to publish the proceedings of the LPBMS2013 in this volume of Journal of Physics: Conference Series. This volume contains 58 papers representing the work that was presented and discussed at the conference. We hope that this volume will promote further development of this interdisciplinary materials research emerging from synchrotron light, neutron, muon, and slow positron sciences. In the opening ceremony, two distinguished keynote speakers have presented their presentations. Captain Stein Inge DAHN who is the president of European Maritime Pilots’ Association(EMPA has given a fulfilling speech on switching to hand steering by giving an example from the automation in the Aviation Industry. The second keynote speaker Robert G. Allan, who is the Executive Chairman of Robert Allan Ltd., has given a leading speech under the title of “The State of the Art in Escort Tug Technology -2015”. Five key points have come into prominence during the symposium. To summarize: • To prevent ships and cargos which are exposed to damages, • To prevent marine and coastal environments against pollution due to collisions, • To establish fast, secure and well organized sea traffic • To develop new escort tug technologies and pilotage softwares in the national level which is open to competitions in the international markets. • Opening maritime pilotage into the competitions in the areas which needs special expertize. In my opinion, the topics discussed in the symposium have the attendants won a wide horizon in the field. However, the presentations related to Escort Tug Technologies were insufficient from the standpoint of both quality and numbers of the manuscripts presented. Due to importance of Maritime Pilotage/Towage Services and Technologies, much more attentions must be taken in the national and international levels and sustainability of the symposium must be provided .

  8. Patterns of Irregular Burials in Western Europe (1st-5th Century A.D.)

    Background Irregular burials (IB—burials showing features that contrast with the majority of others in their geographic and chronological context) have been the focus of archaeological study because of their relative rarity and enigmatic appearance. Interpretations of IB often refer to supposed fear of the dead or to social processes taking place in time-specific contexts. However, a comprehensive and quantitative analysis of IB for various geographical contexts is still lacking, a fact that hampers any discussion of these burials on a larger scale. Methods Here, we collected a bibliographic dataset of 375 IB from both Britain and Continental Europe, altogether spanning a time period from the 1st to the 5th century AD. Each burial has been coded according to ten dichotomous variables, further analyzed by means of chi-squared tests on absolute frequencies, non-metric multidimensional scaling, and cluster analysis. Results Even acknowledging the limits of this study, and in particular the bias represented by the available literature, our results point to interesting patterns. Geographically, IB show a contrast between Britain and Continental Europe, possibly related to historical processes specific to these regions. Different types of IB (especially prone depositions and depositions with the cephalic extremity displaced) present a series of characteristics and associations between features that permit a more detailed conceptualization of these occurrences from a socio-cultural perspective that aids to elucidate their funerary meaning. Conclusions and Significance Altogether, the present work stresses the variability of IB, and the need to contextualize them in a proper archaeological and historical context. It contributes to the discussion of IB by providing a specific geographic and chronological frame of reference that supports a series of hypotheses about the cultural processes possibly underlying their occurrence.     Objective To compare the postoperative course and the clinical results of off-flap Epi-LASIK and Epi-LASIK for the treatment of moderate to high myopia for 1 year. Methods Corneal epithelial flaps of 28 patients with moderate to high myopia were separated with an Amadeus II epikeratome.A patient's eye was randomly treated with flap-off Epi-LASIK.The other eye was underwent Epi-LASIK.All patients' corneal stroma was ablated by TECHNOLAS 217Z100 excimer laser.Pain scores,pain time and uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) were evaluated at the 4 to 7 days after surgery.UCVA,spherical equivalent,best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and haze scores were recorded at 2 weeks,1 month,3 months,6 months and 1 year after surgery. Results The mean preoperative spherical equivalent of Epi-LASIK and flap-off Epi-LASIK were-7.39±2.21D and -7.69±2.38D,P =0.12.Compared with the Epi-LASIK eyes,the better UCVA at 4 or 5 and 14 days after surgery (P =0.01,0.046) and the lower pain scores (P =0.049) were found in off-flap Epi-LASIK eyes.Painful time had no significant difference between 2 groups.There was no significant difference between the 2 groups at the other postoperative intervals in terms of spherical equivalent and UCVA.There was no significant between-group difference in the change in lines of BCVA at 1 year after surgery.The lower level of haze scores at 2 weeks and 3 months after surgery (P=0.00,0.01) were found in off-flap Epi-LASIK eyes. More and more accurate and complex experiments have been devised and these are now going to test the paradigms of physics. Notable experiments include: the Large Hadronic Collider (LHC), which is going to shed light on the physics of the Standard Model of Particles and its extensions; the Planck-Herschel satellites, which target a very precise measurement of the properties of our Universe; and the Free Electron Lasers facilities, which produce high-brilliance, ultrafast X-ray pulses, allowing the investigation of the fundamental processes of solid state physics, chemistry, and biology. These projects are the result of huge collaborations spread across the world, involving scientists belonging to different and complementary research fields: physicists, chemists, biologists and others, keen to make the best of these extraordinary laboratories. Even though each branch of science is experiencing a process of growing specialization, it is very important to keep an eye on the global picture, remaining aware of the deep interconnections between inherent fields.   16. Effects of the April 1st, 2014 GLONASS Outage on GNSS Receivers

    The use of multi-constellation GNSS receivers has been assumed as a way to increase system integrity both by increased coverage during normal operations and failover redundancy in the event of a constellation failure. At approximately 21:00 UTC on April 1st the entire GLONASS constellation was disrupted as illegal ephemeris uploaded to each satellite took effect simultaneously. The outage continued for more than 10 hours. While ephemeris were incorrect, pseudoranges were correctly broadcast on both L1 and L2 and carrier phases were not affected; in the best case, GNSS receivers could be expected to continue to track all signals including GLONASS and at the worst to continue to track GPS and other constellations. It became clear to operators of the GeoNet network in New Zealand that the majority of their 79 GLONASS-enabled receivers experienced total tracking failures. Further detailed analysis of data from these and 315 additional GLONASS-enabled stations worldwide showed that receiver tracking behavior was affected for most receiver brands and models, both for GLONASS and GPS. Findings regarding the impacts of the GLONASS outage on receiver behavior will be highlighted. We use data recorded by GLONASS enabled global sites for the days during, preceding and following the outage to evaluate the impact of the outage on tracking and positioning performance. We observe that for some receiver types the onboard receiver autonomous integrity monitoring (RAIM) failed to ignore the incorrect messages, resulting in degraded GLONASS and GPS tracking and in some cases complete tracking failures and significant data loss. In addition, many of the receivers with clock steering enabled showed outliers in their receiver clock bias estimates that also coincided with the outage. Our results show in detail how different brands, configurations, and distributions of receivers were affected to varying extents, but no common factors are apparent. The ICMER 2011 is a good platform for researchers and postgraduate students to present their latest finding in research. The conference covers a wide range of topics including the internal combustion engine, machining processes, heat and mass transfer, fuel, biomechanical analysis, aerodynamic analysis, thermal comfort, computational techniques, design and simulation, automotive transmission, optimization techniques, hybrid electric vehicles, engine vibration, heat exchangers, finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, green energy, vehicle dynamics renewable energy, combustion, design, product development, advanced experimentation techniques, to name but a few.     Seven healthy volunteers underwent coronal MR imaging at 1.5 tesla of the normal 3rd, 4th, and 5th lumbar, and 1st sacral nerve roots. Coronal slices, 3-mm-thick with a 0.3-mm gap between the slices were obtained (TR/TE 600/22) through the lumbar spinal canal. All the nerve roots were visible on at least one image. One can routinely expect to demonstrate the 3rd, 4th, and 5th lumbar, and 1st sacral nerve roots on T1-weighted, 3-mm-thick coronal MR scans. We found no correlation between the degree of lumbar lordosis and the lengths of the visible nerve roots. Five patients with one of the following spinal problems: anomaly, tumor, disk herniation, and failed back surgery syndrome were examined according to our protocol.     Full Text Available The aim of the study was to analyze functional capacity during the 1st level of the Active Rehabilitation camp of people after spinal cord injury (SCI in cervical segment. The individual functional indicators as: self-service, sphincter control, mobility, locomotion and communication have been analyzed. The study included 30 men with SCI in cervical segment and in age of 18-45. The clinimetric scale for functional rating of neurological patients - The Functional Indicator "Repty" was used in the study. The test were conducted twice: immediately before the beginning of the camp and after. An improvement in functional capacity occurred among all respondents during the 1st level of the AR camp. The greatest improvements concerned the mobility and self-service, smaller improvement occurred in locomotion and sphincter control. There was no significant improvement in level of communication.

    Objective To construct a database of human lung squamous carcinoma cell line NCI-H226 and to facilitate discovery of novel subtypes markers of lung cancer. Method Proteomic technique was used to analyze human lung squamous carcinoma cell line NCI-H226. The proteins of the NCI-H226 cells were separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and identified by mass spectrometry. Results The results showed that a good reproducibility of the 2-D gel pattern was attained. The position deviation of matched spots among three 2-D gels was 1.95±0.53 mm in the isoelectric focusing direction,and 1.73±0.45 mm in the sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis direction. One hundred and twenty-seven proteins, including enzymes, signal transduction proteins, structure proteins, transport proteins, etc. were characterized, of which, 29 identified proteins in NCI-H226 cells were reported for the first time to be involved in lung cancer carcinogenesis.Conclusion The information obtained from this study could provide some valuable clues for further study on the carcinogenetic mechanism of different types of lung cancer, and may help us to discover some potential subtype-specific biomarkers of lung cancer.

    As part of a continuing search for potential anticancer drug candidates, 1-benzyl-3-(5-hydroxymethyl-2-furyl)indazole (YC-1) was evaluated in the Japanese Cancer Institute's (JCI) in vitro disease-oriented anticancer screen. The results indicated that YC-1 showed impressive selective toxicity against the NCI-H226 cell line. Therefore, the molecular mechanism by which YC-1 affects NCI-H226 cell growth was studied. YC-1 inhibited NCI-H226 cell growth in a time- and a concentration-dependent manner. YC-1 suppressed the protein levels of cyclin D1, CDK2 and cdc25A, up-regulated p16, p21 and p53, increased the number of NCI-H226 cells in the G0/G1 phase of the cell cycle. Long exposure to YC-1 induced apoptosis by mitochondrial-dependent pathway. In addition, YC-1 inhibited MMP-2 and MMP-9 protein activities to abolish tumor cells metastasis. These findings suggest a mechanism of cytotoxic action of YC-1 and indicate that YC-1 may be a promising chemotherapy agent against lung cancer. PMID:17880926

    Full Text Available Abstract Background The main processing pathway for MHC class I ligands involves degradation of proteins by the proteasome, followed by transport of products by the transporter associated with antigen processing (TAP to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER, where peptides are bound by MHC class I molecules, and then presented on the cell surface by MHCs. The whole process is modeled here using an integrated approach, which we call EpiJen. EpiJen is based on quantitative matrices, derived by the additive method, and applied successively to select epitopes. EpiJen is available free online. Results To identify epitopes, a source protein is passed through four steps: proteasome cleavage, TAP transport, MHC binding and epitope selection. At each stage, different proportions of non-epitopes are eliminated. The final set of peptides represents no more than 5% of the whole protein sequence and will contain 85% of the true epitopes, as indicated by external validation. Compared to other integrated methods (NetCTL, WAPP and SMM, EpiJen performs best, predicting 61 of the 99 HIV epitopes used in this study. Conclusion EpiJen is a reliable multi-step algorithm for T cell epitope prediction, which belongs to the next generation of in silico T cell epitope identification methods. These methods aim to reduce subsequent experimental work by improving the success rate of epitope prediction.

    Full Text Available Purpose: The growing prevalence of obesity has become a major concern. The efficacy of medical treatment, diet and behavior therapy in morbidly obese patients is limited. Obesity surgery is a treatment option for selected morbidly obese patients. Material and Method: Data of 47 patients (n=39 women, 8 men who underwent bariatric surgery were investigated. Results: Out of 47 patients, 20 underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB (43% and 27 had sleeve gastrectomy (SG (57%. The mean age of the patients was 37±9.5 (19-59 years. 17% of patients were men and 83% were women. In the analysis of data on weight that could be found for 31 out of 47 patients, we detected preoperative and postoperative (1st and 3rd month mean weight values as 125.4±15.9 kg, 112.7±13.2 kg (p<0.001 and 100.9±17.5 kg (p<0.001, respectively. In addition, the analysis of the data on mean fasting plasma glucose (FPG levels which could be found for 23 out of 47 patients, showed us that preoperative and postoperative (1st and 3rd month FPG levels were 100.9±17.5 mg/dL, 91.6±10.9 mg/dL (p=0.03 and 87.3±2.0 mg/dL, respectively. Only 1 patient had diabetes before the surgery. In the RYGB group, the mean change in weight was 12.4±5.5 kg in the 1st month and 22.2±8.6 kg in the 3rd month (compared to the weights in the preoperative period. Moreover, in the SG group, the mean change in weight was 13.7±4.5 kg in the 1st month and 23.4±5.8 kg in the 3rd month. No statistically significant difference was found between the weight changes in the 1st and the 3rd month as for surgery types. Discussion: After bariatric surgery, significant loss in weight and reduction in FPG occurred in short-term.

    A new approach to reduce gradient acoustic noise levels in EPI experiments is presented. Using multichannel RF receive coils, combined with SENSE data acquisition and reconstruction, gradient slew-rates in single-shot EPI were reduced fourfold for rate-2 and ninefold for rate-3 SENSE. Multislice EPI experiments were performed on three different scanner platforms. With 3.4 mm in-plane resolution, measuring 6 slices per second (12 slices with 2000 ms TR), this resulted in average sound pressure level reductions of 11.3 dB(A) and 16.5 dB(A) for rate-2 and rate-3 SENSE, respectively. BOLD fMRI experiments, using visually paced finger-tapping paradigms, showed no detrimental effect of the acoustic noise reduction strategy on temporal noise levels and t scores. PMID:12202101

    It is well known that data acquisition times and image reconstruction procedures in conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are usually long. For time dependent phenomena, such as sample motion, respiration, blood flow pulsation and others, faster acquisition times as desirable to avoid ghosting artifacts. Over the last two decades, a great number of fast and ultra-fast MRI methods have been proposed that greatly reduce the acquisition times. One of them is the echo-planar imaging (EPI) method which uses a single excitation scheme to scan entirely the k-space in a very short time. In the initial sections of this work we will supply the reader with a brief description of the image reconstruction procedures for the conventional MRI sequence and four different schemes of the EPI method. However, our main objective is to propose a modified version of the spin-echo EPI method, suggesting a sequence with the use of a constant phase encoding gradient. (author)

  1. Mapping three-dimensional oil distribution with π-EPI MRI measurements at low magnetic field

    Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a robust tool to image oil saturation distribution in rock cores during oil displacement processes. However, a lengthy measurement time for 3D measurements at low magnetic field can hinder monitoring the displacement. 1D and 2D MRI measurements are instead often undertaken to monitor the oil displacement since they are faster. However, 1D and 2D images may not completely reflect the oil distribution in heterogeneous rock cores. In this work, a high-speed 3D MRI technique, π Echo Planar Imaging (π-EPI), was employed at 0.2 T to monitor oil displacement. Centric scan interleaved sampling with view sharing in k-t space was employed to improve the temporal resolution of the π-EPI measurements. A D2O brine was employed to distinguish the hydrocarbon and water phases. A relatively homogenous glass bead pack and a heterogeneous Spynie core plug were employed to show different oil displacement behaviors. High quality 3D images were acquired with π-EPI MRI measurements. Fluid quantification with π-EPI compared favorably with FID, CPMG, 1D-DHK-SPRITE, 3D Fast Spin Echo (FSE) and 3D Conical SPRITE measurements. π-EPI greatly reduced the gradient duty cycle and improved sensitivity, compared to FSE and Conical SPRITE measurements, enabling dynamic monitoring of oil displacement processes. For core plug samples with sufficiently long lived T2, T2∗, π-EPI is an ideal method for rapid 3D saturation imaging.

    Full Text Available Abstract Background Advances in the high-throughput omic technologies have made it possible to profile cells in a large number of ways at the DNA, RNA, protein, chromosomal, functional, and pharmacological levels. A persistent problem is that some classes of molecular data are labeled with gene identifiers, others with transcript or protein identifiers, and still others with chromosomal locations. What has lagged behind is the ability to integrate the resulting data to uncover complex relationships and patterns. Those issues are reflected in full form by molecular profile data on the panel of 60 diverse human cancer cell lines (the NCI-60 used since 1990 by the U.S. National Cancer Institute to screen compounds for anticancer activity. To our knowledge, CellMiner is the first online database resource for integration of the diverse molecular types of NCI-60 and related meta data. Description CellMiner enables scientists to perform advanced querying of molecular information on NCI-60 (and additional types through a single web interface. CellMiner is a freely available tool that organizes and stores raw and normalized data that represent multiple types of molecular characterizations at the DNA, RNA, protein, and pharmacological levels. Annotations for each project, along with associated metadata on the samples and datasets, are stored in a MySQL database and linked to the molecular profile data. Data can be queried and downloaded along with comprehensive information on experimental and analytic methods for each data set. A Data Intersection tool allows selection of a list of genes (proteins in common between two or more data sets and outputs the data for those genes (proteins in the respective sets.     We derive a physically realistic model for the generation of virtual transillumination, white light microscopy images using epi-fluorescence measurements from thick, unsectioned tissue. We demonstrate this technique by generating virtual transillumination H&E images of unsectioned human breast tissue from epi-fluorescence multiphoton microscopy data. The virtual transillumination algorithm is shown to enable improved contrast and color accuracy compared with previous color mapping methods. Finally, we present an open source implementation of the algorithm in OpenGL, enabling real-time GPU-based generation of virtual transillumination microscopy images using conventional fluorescence microscopy systems.     Full Text Available OBJECTIVE: The Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI reported two equations in 2012: one based on cystatin C concentration (CKD-EPI2012cys and the other using both serum creatinine and cystatin C concentrations (CKD-EPI2012Scr-cys. We compared the adaptability of new formulae with other four equations. METHODS: Participants (n = 788; median age, 54 [range, 19-94] years were recruited from the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University. The reference glomerular filtration rate (rGFR was measured by a (99mTc-DTPA renal dynamic imaging method, and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR was calculated separately by the Chinese adapted Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equation (C-MDRD, MacIsaac, Ma, serum creatinine-based CKD-EPI equation (CKD-EPI2009Scr, CKD-EPI2012cys and CKD-EPI2012Scr-cys equations. We compared the performance of six equations with rGFR. RESULTS: Median rGFR was 76.35 (interquartile range, 59.03-92.50 mL/min/1.73 m(2. Compared with CKD-EPI2009Scr, CKD-EPI2012Scr-cys formula had better diagnostic value with larger area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC(AUC, 0.879, p = 0.006, especially in young participants (ROC(AUC, 0.883, p = 0.005. Neither of the two new CKD-EPI equations achieved any ideal P30 in the elderly participants with moderately-severely injured GFR. Linear regression analysis demonstrated a consistent result. In this study, CKD-EPI2012Scr-cys had a relatively better diagnosis consistency of GFR stage between the eGFR and rGFR in the whole cohort.   8. Educational impact of a clinical anatomy workshop on 1st-year orthopedic and rheumatology fellows in Mexico City.

    We aim to study the educational impact of a clinical anatomy workshop in 1st-year orthopedic and rheumatology fellows. First-year rheumatology fellows (N = 17) and a convenience sample of 1st-year orthopedic fellows (N = 14) from Mexico City in the 9th month of training participated in the study. The pre- and the post- workshop tests included the same 20 questions that had to be answered by identification or demonstration of relevant anatomical items. The questions, arranged by anatomical regions, were asked in five dynamic stations. Overall, the 31 participants showed an increase of correct answers, from a median of 6 (range 1 to 12) in the pre-workshop test, to a median of 14 (range 7 to 19) in the post-workshop test. In the pre-workshop test, the correct median answers were 7 (range 2 to 12) in the orthopedic fellows and 5 (range 1 to 10) in the rheumatology fellows (p = 0.297). Corresponding scores in the post-workshop were 15 (range 10 to 19) and 12 (range 7 to 18) (p = 0.026) showing a significant difference favoring the orthopedic group. Our clinical anatomy workshop was efficacious, in the short term, as a teaching instrument for 1st-year orthopedic and rheumatology fellows. The post-workshop scores, although significantly improved in both groups, particularly in the orthopedic fellows, were still suboptimal.   9. When should orthostatic blood pressure changes be evaluated in elderly: 1st, 3rd or 5th minute?

    Detection of orthostatic hypotension (OH) is very important in geriatric practice, since OH is associated with mortality, ischemic stroke, falls, cognitive failure and depression. It was aimed to determine the most appropriate time for measuring blood pressure in transition from supine to upright position in order to diagnose OH in elderly. Comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) including Head up Tilt Table (HUT) test was performed in 407 geriatric patients. Orthostatic changes were assessed separately for the 1st, 3rd and 5th minutes (HUT1, HUT3 and HUT5, respectively) taking the data in supine position as the basis. The mean age, recurrent falls, presence of dementia and Parkinson's disease, number of drugs, alpha-blocker and anti-dementia drug use, and fasting blood glucose levels were significantly higher in the patients with versus without OH; whereas, albumin and 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels were significantly lower (p<0.05). However, different from HUT3 and HUT5, Charlson Comorbidity Index and the prevalence of diabetes mellitus were higher, the use of antidiabetics, antipsychotics, benzodiazepine, opioid and levodopa were more common (p<0.05). Statistical significance of the number of drugs and fasting blood glucose level was prominent in HUT1 as compared to HUT3 (p<0.01, p<0.05). Comparison of the patients that had OH only in HUT1, HUT3or HUT5 revealed no difference in terms of CGA parameters. These results suggests that orthostatic blood pressure changes determined at the 1st minute might be more important for geriatric practice. Moreover, 1st minute measurement might be more convenient in the elderly as it requires shorter time in practice. PMID:27077324

  10. Treatment of the carcinoma of the vulva at the 1st University-Clinic of Gynaecology in Vienna (386 cases)

    In the department of radiotherapy of the 1st University-Clinic of Gynaecology and Obstetrics in Vienna the electroresection and electrocoagulation is practiced with good success in the treatment of carcinoma of the vulva. Of 386 treated cases with vulvar carcinoma, 234 (60,6%) were alive after five years. After surgical treatment the inguinal lymphonodes were irradiated (6000 rad). In comparison with the international statistic of the Annual Report of the results of treatment in gynaecological cancer (1979) the results obtained in Vienna are much better than the international average.
