11. Preparation of natural radioactive materials

Uranium and thorium ores are the source of natural radionuclides. Briefly described are the original and current methods of long-lived nuclide separation ("2"3"8U, "2"3"5U, "2"2"6Ra, "2"3"0Th, "2"3"1Pa, "2"2"7Ac, "2"3"2Th, "2"2"8Ra+"2"2"8Ac, "2"2"8Th), some short-lived nuclides ("2"3"4Th and "2"2"8Ac), radon, short-lived radon daughter products and long-lived radon daughter products ("2"1"0Pb, "2"1"0Bi, "2"1"0Po). Some nuclides, such as "2"1"0Po or "2"3"1Pa can more easily be producedin reactors. (Ha).

Isotope separation of Ar, C, /sup 3/He, Kr, Ne, O, and Xe isotopes is reported. TiFeH/sub x/, TiCoH/sub x/, TiCuH/sub x/, and VH/sub x/ were studied using NMR (proton relaxation times). VD/sub x/ and VT/sub x/ were synthesized. The problem of calculating the valence state of Pu is discussed. A series solution to the plutonium (N,H) characteristic equation is suggested. Shipments of /sup 231/Pa, /sup 230/Th, and /sup 229/Th are reported. Separation and processing of /sup 234/U are also reported. Theoretical methods were developed to calculate temperature distributions as functions of water flow rate in liquid thermal diffusion columns. Diffusion coefficients were measured from 300 to 1200/sup 0/K for Kr-Xe and Kr-Ar. New thermal diffusion factors are submitted for Ne-Ar.

1 - Description of program or function: MCB-JEF2.2 is a continuous-energy cross section libraries in ACE Format suitable for the MCB-1C and MCNP codes. Libraries for various materials were generated at six different Temperatures, and cover the energy range up to 20 MeV. Format: ACE. Number of groups: Continuous energy. Distribution of "2"3"0Th in milling wastes from the Zirovski vrh uranium mine (Slovenia), and its radioecological implications

Thorium-230, together with "2"3"8U and "2"2"6Ra, was determined (mainly by #gamma#-spectrometry) in samples from the waste piles at Borst and Jazbec in the vicinity of the former uranium mine at Zirovski vrh, Slovenia. Activity (and in the case of uranium, also mass) balances for these nuclides were constructed for the overall operation of the mine and yellow cake plant, using experimental data and known data on ore and uranium production, and nuclide emissions to the environment. All the "2"2"6Ra resulting from ore exploitation is presently contained in the Borst tailings pile. However, because of the very high content of "2"3"0Th in red mud deposited at Jazbec, where 60% of this nuclide is found, the majority of "2"2"6Ra will be found at the Jazbec pile in the future, due to its ingrowth from "2"3"0Th over the next few thousand years. Interface dissolution control of the [sup 14]C profile in marine sediment

The process of carbonate dissolution at the sediment-water interface has two possible end-member boundary conditions. Either the carbonate particles dissolve mostly before they are incorporated into the sediment by bioturbation (interface dissolution), or the vertical mixing is rapid relative to their extermination rate (homogeneous dissolution). In this study, a detailed radiocarbon profile was determined in deep equatorial Pacific sediment that receives a high rate of carbonate supply. In addition, a box model of sediment mixing was used to simulate radiocarbon, carbonate content, and excess thorium profiles that result from either boundary process following a dissolution increase. Results from homogeneous dissolution imply a strong, very recent erosional event, while interface dissolution suggests that moderately increased dissolution began about 10,000 years ago. Influence of solar activity and environment on 10Be in recent natural archives

Understanding the link between the Sun and climate is vital in the current incidence of global climate change, and 10Be in natural archives constitutes an excellent tracer for this purpose. As cosmic rays enter the atmosphere, cosmogenic isotopes like 10Be and 14C are formed. Variations in solar activity modulate the amount of incoming cosmic rays, and thereby cosmogenic isotope production. Atmospherically produced 10Be enters natural archives such as sediments and glaciers by wet and dry deposition within about a year of production. 10Be from natural archives therefore provides information on past solar activity, and because these archives also contain climate information, solar activity and climate can be linked. According to ICRP 60 and European-Directive 96/29, Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) and Technical Enriched Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (TENORM) have to take the radiation protection of the general population as well as of workers into account. The German radiation protection regulations stress that particularly. In connection with these regulations, various measurement programs have been and still are performed to investigate the relevant exposure paths. One of these programs is the determination of the intake of natural occurring radionuclides of the uranium decay series in individuals of the public, in exposed regions and houses and also at NORM workplaces by excretion analysis. Excretion analysis surveillance is one of the common tools for internal dosimetry. Spectroscopy of light exotic nuclei

Neutron-rich He-, Li-, and Be-isotopes in the vicinity of the drip-line have been studied by "1"2C- and "1"4C-induced multi-nucleon transfer reactions on "1"0Be and "1"3","1"4C-targets. This study revealed unknown excited states in "8","1"0He, "1"0","1"1Li and in "1"3","1"4Be. Both excitation energies and widths have been measured. In some cases most probable spins and parities could be assigned to the particle-unstable states observed. (orig.).

Nuclear charge radii of light isotopes based on frequency comb measurements

Optical frequency comb technology has been used in this work for the first time to investigate the nuclear structure of light radioactive isotopes. Therefore, three laser systems were stabilized with different techniques to accurately known optical frequencies and used in two specialized experiments. Absolute transition frequency measurements of lithium and beryllium isotopes were performed with accuracy on the order of 10{sup -10}. Such a high accuracy is required for the light elements since the nuclear volume effect has only a 10{sup -9} contribution to the total transition frequency. For beryllium, the isotope shift was determined with an accuracy that is sufficient to extract information about the proton distribution inside the nucleus. A Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy on the stable lithium isotopes {sup 6,7}Li was performed in order to determine the absolute frequency of the 2S {yields} 3S transition. Study of heavy-ion reactions with the unstable Nuclei, {sup 11}Be and {sup 13}N

Heavy-ion reaction with unstable nuclei, {sup 13}N and {sup 11}Be, {sup 13}N+{sup 12}C and {sup 11}Be+{sup 12}C-{sup 10}Be+{sup 13}C were analyzed by a coupled-reaction-channel (CRC) method and formation of valence nucleon molecular orbital was studied by numerical analysing calculation. In this report, 1P1/2 (the ground state of {sup 13}N and {sup 13}C), 2s1/2 (the ground state of {sup 11}Be), 1d5/2 and 1d3/2 orbital were studied as one particle state of valance nucleon in {sup 13}N, {sup 13}C and {sup 11}Be. Moreover, d3/2 state, comparatively higher excited state, was contained into CRC calculation. The effect of this state on CRC scheme was proved very large. We developed new program code to obtain the numerical stable solution. Diffuse $\\gamma$-rays and $\\bar{p}$ flux from dark matter annihilation -- a model for consistent results with EGRET and cosmic ray data

In this work we develop a new propagation model for the Galactic cosmic rays based on the GALPROP code, including contributions from dark matter annihilation. The model predicts compatible Galactic diffuse $\\gamma$ ray spectra with EGRET data in all sky regions. It also gives consistent results of the diffuse $\\gamma$ ray longitude and latitude distributions. Further the results for B/C, $^{10}$Be/$^9$Be, proton, electron and antiproton spectra are also consistent with cosmic ray measurements. In the model we have taken a universal proton spectrum throughout the Galaxy without introducing large fluctuation for the proton energy loss is negligible. The dark matter annihilation signals are `boosted' after taking the contribution from subhalos into account.
